The purpose of this study was to examine the chemical composition of essential oil and crude ethanolic extract from the fruits of Elsholtzia griffithii, and to evaluate their cosmeceutical bioactivities such as anti-acne, antioxidant, and anti-tyrosinase effects using in vitro experimental models. The main components of essential oils were neral (48.72%) and geranial (37.34%). Kaempferol, a dietary flavonoid, was found (0.45%) in crude ethanolic extract. The essential oil inhibited Propionibacterium acnes strongly, whereas the crude ethanolic extract demonstrated modest antibacterial action. Cholesteric liquid crystals (CLC), polymer stabilized cholesteric liquid crystals (PSCLC), and polymer dispersed cholesteric liquid crystals (PDCLC) are promising dye-doped optically pumped lasing materials with an inherent photonic band gap structure. PSCLC/PDCLC can be used as electrically controllable PBG materials as per discovered phenomena's suggestion.

Aluminosilicate MCM-48 materials with Si/A1 ratio between 4 and 50 are prepared through direct mixed-gel synthesis, and their hydrothermal stability in boiling water and steam is investigated using a variety of techniques including powder XRD, N2 sorption studies, and element analysis. The findings show that it is possible to prepare A1-MCM-48 materials with good structure ordering and hydrothermal stability by careful choice of the A1 content.

Low-frequency Raman spectroscopy in combination with small-angle X-ray scattering and differential scanning caloimetry is used to study the chain-folding behavior of short oxybutylene/oxyethylene/oxybutylene triblock copolymers with one crystallizable E block and two noncrystallizable B blocks. The result point to folded-chain conformations in which the oxythylene blocks are orientated normal to the lamellar end plane.

The condensation product of 5‐methoxy‐salicylaldehyde with hydrazine hydrate (referred to below as compound 1) was used as a ligand in a cellulose acetate electrospun nanofibrous mat to determine copper ions in aqueous solutions. The electrospun nanofibrous mats, based on cellulose acetate mixed with compound 1, were constructed using an electrospinning method and had a diameter of 260 nm. The sensing nanofibrous mat exhibited a sensitive and selective response for Cu(II) ions over a linear concentration range of 1‐30 µM in a 0.1 M HEPES buffer (pH 7.4) using a colorimeter. The detection limit of the method was 1.04 µM lower than the maximum level of Cu(II) in drinking water (16 µM, as determined by the US Environmental Protection Agency). Additionally, it exhibited high selectivity for Cu(II) ions over 13 other cations. The sensing nanofibrous mat was fully reversible for ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid treatment cycles. Preliminary results indicated the sensitivity and selectivity of the nanofibrous mat for detecting Cu(II) ions by naked‐eye detection from yellow to orange. The reaction product of compound 1 and the Cu(II) ion was studied using X‐ray absorption spectroscopy. The Cu‐coordination number was approximately 5.023 ± 1.42, and the Cu–N distance (R) was 1.986 Å. The nanofibrous mat demonstrated a convenient and straightforward Cu(II) ion‐detection technique in both wastewater and water environments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It has been possible to obtain micelle properties and sol-gel curves for four oxyethylene/oxybutylene diblock copolymers: E96B18, E184B18, E315B17 and E398B19. At room temperature, hard gels were formed in the concentration range 3.5 wt % to 8 wt % copolymer depending on E-block length.

Boesenbergia rotunda (Zingiberaceae), an aromatic perennial herb, has been used in ethnomedicine as an antiflatulent, antidiarrheal, and antirheumatism agent. In this study, the genetic variation of three types of B. rotunda from Thailand, one wild type ('Krachai Pha') and two cultivars ('Krachai Ban' and 'Krachai Deang'), was studied by analyzing the essential oil compositions of their roots and rhizomes together with their internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences. The roots and rhizomes of 'Krachai Ban' and 'Krachai Pha' were rich in monoterpene hydrocarbons and oxygenated monoterpenes whereas the roots and rhizomes of 'Krachai Deang' were rich in oxygenated monoterpenes. The results of phylogenetic analysis based on the essential oil compositions and ITS sequences showed that 'Krachai Ban' was more closely related to 'Krachai Pha' than to 'Krachai Deang'. It should be concluded that three types of B. rotunda from Thailand might be potential sources for drug discovery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Due to an increase in the production of green tea, the amount of leaf waste has increased enormously, causing serious environmental problems. With regard to environmental awareness, the possibility of reusing the waste leaves of green tea as a low‐cost and abundantly available source of natural dye for dyeing cotton fibres was investigated. Natural dye powder from the waste leaves of green tea (NDPT) was successfully applied to dye cotton fibres without mordant by batch experiments. NDPT was obtained as a dark brown powder with a yield of 2.7 ± 0.5% w/w from dried waste leaves of green tea. The optimal conditions for dyeing NDPT onto cotton fibres were: pH of dye solution, 3; material to liquor ratio, 100:1; dyeing time, 180 min; concentration of dye solution, 3.0 mg/ml; and dyeing temperature, 100 °C. The colour of cotton fibres dyed with NDPT was observed to be dark brown. The adsorption data of NDPT on cotton fibres was best fitted with a Langmuir adsorption isotherm model with a correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.997. It is clear that there is a strong possibility of reusing the waste leaves of green tea as a low‐cost and abundantly available source of natural dye for dyeing cotton fibres. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The dependence of the micellar properties(association number and radius) of E/B diblock copolymers on E-block length is investigated for copolymers with E-block lengths upto E(sub 610). E-block length enables to predict the requirements for properties of very dilute aqueous gels.

The phase behavior of an oxyethylene/oxybutylene diblock copolymer (E(sub 22)B(sub 7) in aqueous solution is studied using three properties, which are yield stress (by rheometry and tube inversion), dynamic modulus (by rheometry), and structure (by small angle X-ray scattering). By all three methods the boundary of immobile structured gel is detected.
