Abstract Photothermal microscopy is a highly sensitive pump-probe method for mapping nanostructures and molecules through the detection of local thermal gradients. While visible photothermal microscopy and mid-infrared photothermal microscopy techniques have been developed, they possess inherent limitations. These techniques either lack chemical specificity or encounter significant light attenuation caused by water absorption. Here, we present an overtone photothermal (OPT) microscopy technique that offers high chemical specificity, detection sensitivity, and spatial resolution by employing a visible probe for local heat detection in the C-H overtone region. We demonstrate its capability for high-fidelity chemical imaging of polymer nanostructures, depth-resolved intracellular chemical mapping of cancer cells, and imaging of multicellular C. elegans organisms and highly scattering brain tissues. By bridging the gap between visible and mid-infrared photothermal microscopy, OPT establishes a new modality for high-resolution and high-sensitivity chemical imaging. This advancement complements large-scale shortwave infrared imaging approaches, facilitating multiscale structural and chemical investigations of materials and biological metabolism.

Drawing upon advancements in profiling technology, this paper presents an innovative lateral profiling mechanism for the header to improve mowing efficiency and the ability to adapt to terrain for river dike mowers. It delves into the imitation principle and forced situations. Furthermore, a novel lawn protection boot design has been introduced, capable of adjusting mowing heights with swift transitions. The structural integrity of this boot has been optimized through rigorous finite element analysis. Meanwhile, the rolling shaft and cutter have been carefully selected and designed, with a mechanical model of the cutter established to examine its motion and force characteristics. In addition, hydraulic circuits tailored to fulfill the required functions of the header have been devised, and key hydraulic components have been appropriately selected. Key components are subjected to finite element analysis by using ANSYS to verify and optimize their structural strength. Prototype testing and field trials are subsequently conducted, revealing that the mower can achieve a mowing speed of 0.85 m/s on flat ground and a 25-degree slope, thereby fulfilling the design requirements for mowing speed. The imitation mechanism adapts to different embankment terrains. Notably, the lawn protection boots offer adjustable mowing heights of 10.4 cm, 12 cm, and 14 cm, respectively, with a height adjustment range of approximately 2 cm for each position, meeting the requirement for adjusting mowing heights. In addition, the transition time between different positions of the lawn protection boots is less than 5 min, achieving rapid switching and operational efficiency. Furthermore, a mowing uniformity test is conducted by using a header equipped with profiling functionality. The results reveal that the mowing effect of the profiling header meets design requirements, demonstrating its effectiveness and reliability in agricultural applications.

ObjectivesThe wetting gradient surface has potential application value in such fields as ship anti-fouling and submarine drag reduction, requiring further research on low-cost and low-complexity wetting gradient surface preparation technology.MethodsThe preparation and static wetting characteristics of a silica-based wetting gradient surface are analyzed using vapor deposition, alkali corrosion and a combination of both.ResultsThe contact angle using vapor deposition reaches 104.9°, with a largest range of about 23°; that using alkali corrosion reaches 80.2°, with a largest range of about 60°; and that using both methods reaches 102.1°, with a largest range of about 40°.ConclusionsThe results of this study can provide references for the preparation of functional surfaces for marine equipment.

Intravascular photoacoustic imaging has been developed to evaluate the possibility of plaque rupture in atherosclerosis by high spatial resolution imaging of lipid. However, the detection sensitivity and spatial resolution are compromised by the poor focusing caused by a multimode fiber. In this work, we report an intravascular photoacoustic catheter with mode self-cleaning in a graded-index fiber to improve the beam quality and the sensitivity for lipid detection. Compared with the higher-order modes in a step-index multimode fiber, the lower-order modes generated by the self-cleaning effect in the graded-index fiber greatly enhanced the photoacoustic spatial resolution and detection sensitivity. The dominant ringing artifact caused by laser absorption of the ultrasound transducer was further reduced by using stripe suppression. A lipid plaque mimicking phantom was imaged for evaluation. Lipid particles with a small diameter of 75.7 µm were clearly observed.

Abstract Lensless single-shot ultrafast optical imaging is realized by integrating an acousto-optic programmable dispersive filter with spectrally filtered sequentially time all-optical mapping photography, which enables independent control of frame rate, frame intensity, and exposure time with a simple system design.

IntroductionThe coronavirus disease (COVID-19) swept the globe and harmfully influenced the mental health and behaviors of the college student population. This study aims to examine the prevalence and difference of mental health and the substance use problems of the Chinese college-age students studying in China and America (CSA) during the COVID-19 pandemic.MethodsOne thousand five hundred four students participated in this study. A total of 42.12% of students are enrolled in Chinese colleges, and 57.78% of students are enrolled in American colleges, aged 17–23 years (x¯±s = 19.90 ± 1.50). Binary logistic regression and independent t-test were used in this study to find the predictor variables and association among mental health, substance use problems, and student population.ResultsThe two student groups had a statistical difference in General Anxiety Disorder-7 scale, alcohol, medicines, drinks, drugs and cigarettes (p < 0.01). The students suffering depression problems from the two groups have statistical significance with drinks (odds ratio = 0.89, 95% confidence interval = 0.81–0.97, p < 0.05; odds ratio = 1.11, 95% confidence interval = 1.04–1.19, p < 0.01). CSA experiencing anxiety problem had a significant association with alcohol, drinks, cigarette, and desserts (p < 0.05).ConclusionThis is the first cross-sectional study focusing on the comparison of the Chinese college-age students' mental health and substance use problems who are studying in China and America during the pandemic. Our study revealed severe mental health and substance use problems in both student groups, particularly in the CSA during the COVID-19 pandemic. The findings of our study also highlight the evidence to find more interventions and preventions to solve the different mental health and substance use problems for college students.

Although Chinese international students’ cross-cultural adaptation has achieved intense research, factors in developing Chinese SISs’ cross-cultural adaptation remain underresearched. This study examined the factors through a survey of Chinese SISs’ transitional adaptation in psychology, life, and learning. Mixed-method research was conducted: a survey of 155 SISs from a top Chinese university undertaking study across 16 countries and in-depth interviews with 15 SISs. Results indicate that knowledge of the host country and university, language proficiency, sense of participation, and engagement are the crucial factors in developing Chinese SISs’ cross-cultural adaptation. These factors reveal significant correlations with the students’ adaptive performances in psychology, life, and learning. However, the factor of duration indicates no significant correlation with students’ cross-cultural adaptation, which demonstrates an inconsistency with the previous studies. The findings of this study highlight the need for developing Chinese SISs’ sense of engagement, enhancing the language training, and building up the knowledge of the host cultures previous to the study abroad.

Introduction: The outbreak of coronavirus disease has negatively impacted college students' mental health across the world. In addition, substance abuse also is trouble among these students. This study aims to find the gender difference in Chinese international college students' mental health and substance abuse during the COVID-19 pandemic.Method: We conducted an online survey using PHQ-9, GAD-7, and several questions related to substance abuse frequency, self-injury, and suicidal thoughts, 535 male and 475 female Chinese international college students whose ages ranged from 18 to 23 years old (x = 20.19, SD = 1.50) were recruited during the epidemic. We utilized t-test and binary logistic regression in our study to find out the difference and statistical significance between substance abuse issues and mental health problems across gender.Results: Both male and female Chinese international college students had statistical significance with self-injury ideas and behaviors (t = −2.21, p < 0.05). Furthermore, the male college students with anxiety problems had positive statistical significance with medicine (OR = 3.47, 95%CI = 1.45–8.30, p < 0.01) and negative statistical significance with drinks (OR = 0.23, 95%CI = 0.08–0.65, p < 0.01). While for female college students with an anxiety problem, they had positive statistical significance with medicine (OR = 4.88, 95%CI = 1.53–15.57, p < 0.01), drugs (OR = 4.48, 95%CI = 1.41–14.25, p < 0.05) and cigarettes (OR = 6.63, 95%CI = 1.95–22.57, p < 0.01) and negative statistical significance with drinks (OR = 0.18, 95%CI = −0.05 to 0.65, p < 0.01).Conclusion: This is the first cross-sectional study focusing on the Chinese international college students' mental health and substance abuse problems during the COVID-19 pandemic. We found that Chinese international college students' mental health and substance abuse situation has been negatively influenced during this period. In addition, the self-injury ideas and behaviors also showed a high tendency for these students. The findings of our study also highlight the need to find more interventions and preventions to solve the different mental health and substance abuse problems for college students, especially for female Chinese international college students.

To investigate the monitoring history and long-term change trends in surface water quality in China since the reform and opening up, the history of surface water environment monitoring is summarized, including monitoring scope, monitoring methods, and technical requirements. Temporal and spatial patterns of surface water quality in China were analyzed based on the monitoring results. In the past 40 years, the monitoring targets for surface water quality have been continuously improved, the frequency of monitoring has become more science-based, and the monitoring indicators are now comprehensive. Overall, the temporal change trend in surface water quality has followed a “fluctuating changes stage—rapid deterioration stage—fluctuations stalemate stage—rapid improvement stage” pattern. However, the current regional surface water quality is still in a polluted status, and there is a gap between surface water quality status and the goal of building a well-off society. At present, China’s surface water pollution is prone to high numbers of incidents and the treatment of surface water pollution has entered a crucial stage. The potential for the continuous reduction of major pollutant discharges has become more challenging, and the marginal cost for pollution control has increased. It is very difficult to comprehensively solve the outstanding water environment problems. In addition to strengthening the existing work on surface water quality control, it is also necessary to strengthen the work of risk identification, early warning, and regulation implementation of the surface water environment. During the 14th year plan period (2021–2025), the overall planning on water resources, water ecology, and water quality will be implemented, and beautiful rivers and lakes will be created.

The authors adopt an event study method and empirically investigate the performance of a beta momentum strategy (long in past winners of small beta and short in past losers of large beta) after extreme market movements in 20 countries. The researchers find that the beta momentum strategy yields material abnormal returns after controlling for return factors of size (SMB), book-to-market (HML) and momentum (UMD). The results are consistent for both extreme market UP days or DOWN days and regardless of whether the extreme market movements are identified by three percent or two percent cut-off points. In addition, the results based on the beta momentum strategy are more consistent than those of conventional momentum and betting against beta (BAB) strategies over different test windows from (0, +1) days to (0, +90). Finally, the abnormal returns based on momentum, BAB, and our beta momentum strategies are statistically insignificant for the Asian and Australian subsamples, whereas the results are significant for the European and North American samples.

Background: We intended to investigate the effects of lung protective ventilation on the cognitive function level of patients with esophageal cancer. Methods: Overall, 132 patients with esophageal cancer admitted to Taian Central Hospital, Taian China from January 2013 to January 2017 were enrolled in the study. According to the random number table method, they were divided into observation group and control group, 66 cases each. All patients underwent general anesthesia for thoracoscopic esophageal cancer radical operation, and lung protective ventilation and conventional positive pressure ventilation were used respectively. The levels of SOD, NSE and MDA, MMSE score and WMS memory quotient in the blood of the elbow vein were compared between the two groups at different times. Results: The levels of SOD and MMSE in the observation group at T2 and T3 were higher than those in the control group, and the NSE and MDA levels were lower than those in the control group (P=0.013, 0.033, 0.015, 0.044, 0.034, 0.029, 0.014, 0.017). The incidence of postoperative cognitive impairment was lower in the observation group than in the control group (P=0.007). The WMS memory quotient scores of the patients in the T2, T3, and T4 observation groups were higher than those in the control group (p=0.009, 0.032, 0.040). Conclusion: Lung protective ventilation can reduce the oxidative stress injury for patients and improve their postoperative cognitive function and memory ability.

An E-panel, comprising an electronic nose (E-nose) and an electronic tongue (E-tongue), was used to distinguish the organoleptic characteristics of minced mutton adulterated with different proportions of pork. Meanwhile, the normalization, stepwise linear discriminant analysis (step-LDA), and principle component analysis were employed to merge the data matrix of E-nose and E-tongue. The discrimination results were evaluated and compared by canonical discriminant analysis (CDA) and Bayesian discriminant analysis (BAD). It was shown that the capability of discrimination of the combined system (classification error 0%∼1.67%) was superior or equable to that obtained with the two instruments separately, and E-tongue system (classification error for E-tongue 0∼2.5%) obtained higher accuracy than E-nose (classification error 0.83%∼10.83% for E-nose). For the combined system, the combination of extracted data of 6 PCs of E-nose and 5 PCs of E-tongue was proved to be the most effective method. In order to predict the pork proportion in adulterated mutton, multiple linear regression (MLR), partial least square analysis (PLS), and backpropagation neural network (BPNN) regression models were used, and the results were compared, aiming at building effective predictive models. Good correlations were found between the signals obtained from E-tongue, E-nose, and fusion data of E-nose and E-tongue and proportions of pork in minced mutton with correlation coefficients higher than 0.90 in the calibration and validation data sets. And BPNN was proved to be the most effective method for the prediction of pork proportions with R2 higher than 0.97 both for the calibration and validation data set. These results indicated that integration of E-nose and E-tongue could be a useful tool for the detection of mutton adulteration.

We report the theoretical and experimental study of calibration-free heterodyne phase-sensitive dispersion spectroscopy (HPSDS) in the mid-infrared using a direct current modulated mid-infrared quantum cascade laser (QCL). The modulation of QCL current at several hundred MHz or higher generates the synchronous frequency and intensity modulation of the QCL emission. An analytical model of the phase of the beat note signal in HPSDS is derived by considering the absorption and dispersion processes and incorporating the QCL modulation parameters. In the experiment, a 4.5 μm QCL modulated at 350 MHz was used to measure N2O at 200 Torr in a 10 cm gas cell. The N2O concentrations inferred from the analytical model were compared with the nominal values to show good agreement over the concentration range of 189−805 ppm with a standard deviation

This paper is intended to summarize the research conducted during the first 2 years of the Dragon 5 project 59,332 (geophysical and atmospheric retrieval from Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data stacks over natural scenarios). Monitoring atmospheric phenomena, encompassing both tropospheric and ionospheric conditions, holds pivotal significance for various scientific and practical applications. In this paper, we present an exploration of advanced techniques for estimating tropospheric and ionospheric phase screens using stacks of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images. Our study delves into the current state-of-the-art in atmospheric monitoring with a focus on spaceborne SAR systems, shedding light on their evolving capabilities. For tropospheric phase screen estimation, we propose a novel approach that jointly estimates the tropospheric component from all the images. We discuss the methodology in detail, highlighting its ability to recover accurate tropospheric maps. Through a series of quantitative case studies using real Sentinel-1 satellite data, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our technique in capturing tropospheric variability over different geographical regions. Concurrently, we delve into the estimation of ionospheric phase screens utilizing SAR image stacks. The intricacies of ionospheric disturbances pose unique challenges, necessitating specialized techniques. We dissect our approach, showcasing its capacity to mitigate ionospheric noise and recover precise phase information. Real data from the Sentinel-1 satellite are employed to showcase the efficacy of our method, unraveling ionospheric perturbations with improved accuracy. The integration of our techniques, though presented separately for clarity, collectively contributes to a comprehensive framework for atmospheric monitoring. Our findings emphasize the potential of SAR-based approaches in advancing our knowledge of atmospheric processes, thus fostering advancements in weather prediction, geophysics, and environmental management.

Abstract Despite being one of the most prevalent RNA modifications, the role of N6‐methyladenosine (m6A) in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) remains ambiguous. In this investigation, we explore the contribution of genetic defects of m6A‐related genes to ALS pathogenesis. We scrutinized the mutation landscape of m6A genes through a comprehensive analysis of whole‐exome sequencing cohorts, encompassing 508 ALS patients and 1660 population‐matched controls. Our findings reveal a noteworthy enrichment of RNA binding motif protein X‐linked (RBMX) variants among ALS patients, with a significant correlation between pathogenic m6A variants and adverse clinical outcomes. Furthermore, Rbmx knockdown in NSC‐34 cells overexpressing mutant TDP43Q331K results in cell death mediated by an augmented p53 response. Similarly, RBMX knockdown in ALS motor neurons derived from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) manifests morphological defects and activation of the p53 pathway. Transcriptional analysis using publicly available single‐cell sequencing data from the primary motor cortex indicates that RBMX‐regulated genes selectively influence excitatory neurons and exhibit enrichment in ALS‐implicated pathways. Through integrated analyses, our study underscores the emerging roles played by RBMX in ALS, suggesting a potential nexus between the disease and dysregulated m6A‐mediated mRNA metabolism.

BackgroundDepressive symptoms represent a significant public health challenge, impacting the mental well-being of older adults. Despite this, the understanding of how activities of daily living (ADL) abilities correlate with life satisfaction and depressive symptoms among older Chinese adults remains limited.AimsThis study aims to investigate the relationship between ADL and depressive symptoms in older people Chinese individuals, with a specific focus on examining the mediating role of life satisfaction within this context.MethodsThe study utilized data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) collected in 2020. A cohort of 8,343 individuals aged 60 years and above was included. PBX1 is a transcription factor that can promote the occurrence of various tumors and play a reg-ulatory role in tumor growth, metastasis, invasion, and drug resistance. Furthermore, a variant generated by fusion of E2A and PBX1, E2A-PBX1, has been found in 25% of patients with childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Thus, PBX1 is a potential therapeutic target for many cancers. Here, we describe the structure of PBX1 and E2A-PBX1 as well as the molecular mecha-nisms whereby these proteins promote tumorigenesis to provide future research directions for developing new treatments. We show that PBX1 and E2A-PBX1 induce the development of highly malignant and difficult-to-treat solid and blood tumors. The development of specific drugs against their targets may be a good therapeutic strategy for PBX1-related cancers. Furthermore, we strongly recommend E2A-PBX1 as one of the genes for prenatal screening to reduce the incidence of childhood hematological malignancies.
