Abstract On May 4 2010 a wind-blown ash plume issued from Eyjafjallajökull volcano in Iceland. Analysis of a 17-minute-long video recording of the eruption suggests that, within 2–2.5 km of the vent, the flow was moving with the wind and rising under buoyancy, following a trajectory directly analogous with laboratory experiments of turbulent buoyant plumes in a cross-flow. The radius of the time-averaged ash cloud grew with height z at a rate r = 0.48 z, corresponding to an entrainment coefficient 0.4, again consistent with laboratory experiments. By analysing the frames in the video and comparing the shape of the plume to that predicted by the model, we estimate that during the 17 minutes recorded, the eruption rate gradually decreased by about 43% from an initial rate of 1.11 × 104 kg s−1 to 0.63 × 104 kg s−1. The analysis reported herein opens the way to assess eruption rates and eruption column processes from video recordings during explosive volcanic eruptions.

A utilização do manejo integrado de pragas, associado ao controle biológico, tem sido uma estratégia eficiente, econômica e mais sustentável no controle de agentes danosos à agricultura. A fase larval de Spodoptera frugiperda, umapraga agrícola presente em diversas culturas, é causadora de prejuízos financeiros para o agronegócio, e os entomopatógenos têm sido amplamente utilizados no controle biológico dessa espécie. Assim, o objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar a patogenicidade de bactérias e vírus no manejo de S. frugiperda, em condições de laboratório. Para os bioensaios, utilizamos seis tratamentos por cinco repetições contendo seis lagartas (com segundo e terceiro instares) em cada. Os entomopatógenos utilizados foram S. frugiperda Multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus (SfMNPV), Autographa californica multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus (AcMNPV), Bacillus subtilis, B. thuringiensis subsp. thoworthy, e B. thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki. A avaliação da mortalidade ocorreu diariamente até a finalização do ciclo larval. Para a avaliação da mortalidade, utilizou-se a análise de variância (teste F), comparada posteriormente ao teste Scott-Knott a 5% de probabilidade e à eficiência dos bioinseticidas através da fórmula de Abbott. De modo geral, os entomopatógenos mais eficientes foram SfMNPV e B. subtilis, obtendo 100% de mortalidade nas lagartas de segundo instar, enquanto para as de terceiro instar, o AcMNPV mostrou letalidade máxima em 76,67% das amostras.

The phenomenon of high-frequency distortion (HFD) in the electric grids, at both low-voltage (LV) and medium-voltage (MV) levels, is gaining increasing interest within the scientific and technical community due to its growing occurrence and the associated impact. These disturbances are mainly injected into the grid by new installed devices, essential for achieving decentralized generation based on renewable sources. In fact, these generation systems are connected to the grid through power converters, whose switching frequencies are significantly increasing, leading to a corresponding rise in the frequency of the injected disturbances. HFD represents a quite recent issue, but numerous scientific papers have been published in recent years on this topic. Furthermore, various international standards have also covered it, to provide guidance on instrumentation and related algorithms and indices for the measurement of these phenomena. When measuring HFD in MV grids, it is necessary to use instrument transformers (ITs) to scale voltages and currents to levels fitting with the input stages of power quality (PQ) instruments. In this respect, the recently released Edition 2 of the IEC 61869-1 standard extends the concept of the IT accuracy class up to 500 kHz; however, the IEC 61869 standard family provides guidelines on how to test ITs only at power frequency. This paper provides an extensive review of literature, standards, and the main outputs of European research projects focusing on HFD and ITs. This preliminary study of the state-of-the-art represents an essential starting point for defining significant waveforms to test ITs and, more generally, to achieve a comprehensive understanding of HFD. In this framework, this paper provides a summary of the most common ranges of amplitude and frequency variations of actual HFD found in real grids, the currently adopted measurement methods, and the normative open challenges to be addressed.

We have established Noonan syndrome (NS)-derived induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) lines derived from peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of a family cohort carrying the heterozygous PTPN11 c.188 A > G (p.Y63C) mutation. The new iPSC lines were validated by confirming the normal karyotype and targeted mutation, the pluripotent gene expression, and the differentiation capacity into three germ layers.

Since the integration of electronic devices and intelligent electronic devices into the power grid, power quality (PQ) has consistently remained a significant concern for system operators and experts. Maintaining high standards of power quality is crucial to preventing malfunctions and faults in electric assets and connected loads. Recently, PQ studies have shifted their focus to a specific frequency range, previously not considered problematic—the supraharmonic 2 kHz to 150 kHz range. This range is not populated by easily recognizable harmonic components of the 50 Hz to 60 Hz mains fundamental, but by a combination of intentional emissions, switching non-linearities and byproducts, and various types of resonances. This paper aims to provide a detailed analysis of the impact of supraharmonics (SHs) on power network operation and assets, focusing on the most relevant documented negative effects, namely power loss and the heating of grid elements, aging of dielectric materials, failure of medium voltage (MV) cable terminations, and interference with equipment and power line communication (PLC) technology in particular. Under some shareable assumptions, limits are derived and compared to existing ones for harmonic phenomena, providing a clear identification of the primary issues associated with supraharmonics and suggestions for the standardization process. Strictly related is the problem of grid monitoring and assessment of SH distortion, discussing the suitability of normative requirements for instrument transformers (ITs) with a specific focus on their accuracy.

The need to monitor the power network is leading to a significant increase in the number of measurement points. These points consist of intelligent electronic devices and instrument transformers (or more in general sensors). However, as the number of devices increases, so does the demand for their characterization and testing. To this end, the authors formulated a new characterization procedure that offers numerous benefits for manufacturers and system operators. These benefits include: (i) reducing testing time (thus lowering costs), (ii) simplifying the existing procedures, and (iii) increasing the number of tested devices. In this study, to complete the validation of the proposed characterization procedure, the authors performed a comprehensive uncertainty evaluation. This included the identification and analysis of the uncertainty sources, the implementation of the Monte Carlo method to obtain the statistical parameters of the quantities of interest, and the final method assessment according to the obtained results. Each step is described in detail, and the results allow one to (i) replicate the uncertainty analysis on other types of instrument transformers and (ii) implement the proposed harmonic characterization procedure with the confidence that the method is accurate, flexible, and scalable.

The integration of renewable energy sources, electric vehicles, and other electrical assets has introduced complexities in monitoring and controlling power networks. Consequently, numerous grid nodes have been equipped with sensors and complex measurement systems to enhance network observability. Additionally, real-time power network simulators have become crucial tools for predicting and estimating the behavior of electrical quantities at different network components, such as nodes, branches, and assets. In this paper, a new user-friendly model for Rogowski coils is presented and validated. The model’s simplicity stems from utilizing information solely from the Rogowski coil datasheet. By establishing the input/output relationship, the output of the Rogowski coil is obtained. The effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed model are tested using both simulations and commercially available Rogowski coils. The results confirm that the model is simple, accurate, and easily implementable in various simulation environments for a wide range of applications and purposes.

Instrument transformers (ITs) play a key role in electrical power systems, facilitating the accurate monitoring and measurement of electrical quantities. They are essential for measurement, protection, and metering in transmission and distribution grids and accurately reducing the grid voltage and current for low-voltage input instrumentation. With the increase in renewable energy sources, electronic converters, and electric vehicles connected to power grids, ITs now face challenging distorted conditions that differ from the nominal ones. The study presented in this paper is a collaborative work between national metrology institutes and universities that analyzes IT performance in measuring distorted voltages and currents in medium-voltage grids under realistic conditions. Both current and voltage measuring transformers are examined, considering influence quantities like the temperature, mechanical vibration, burden, adjacent phases, and proximity effects. The study provides detailed insights into measurement setups and procedures, and it quantifies potential errors arising from IT behavior in measuring distorted signals in the presence of the various considered influence quantities and their combinations. The main findings reveal that the temperature has the most evident impact on the inductive voltage transformer performance, as well as the burden, causing significant changes in ratio error and phase displacement at the lower temperatures. As for low-power ITs, establishing a priori the effects of adjacent phases and proximity on the frequency responses of low-power ITs is a complex matter, because of their different characteristics and construction solutions.

Abstract Deposits from explosive submarine eruptions have been found in the deep sea, 1–4 km below the surface, with both flow and fall deposits extending several km’s over the seafloor. A model of a turbulent fountain suggests that after rising 10–20 m above the vent, the erupting particle-laden mixture entrains and mixes with sufficient seawater that it becomes denser than seawater. The momentum of the resulting negatively buoyant fountain is only sufficient to carry the material 50–200 m above the seafloor and much of the solid material then collapses to the seafloor; this will not produce the far-reaching fall deposits observed on the seabed. However, new laboratory experiments show that particle sedimentation at the top of the fountain enables some of the hot, buoyant water in the fountain to separate from the collapsing flow and continue rising as a buoyant plume until it forms a radially spreading intrusion higher in the water column. With eruption rates of 10 $$^6$$ 6 –10 $$^7$$ 7 $$\hbox {kg s}^{-1}$$ kg s - 1 , we estimate that this warm water may rise a few 100’s m above the fountain. Some of the finer grained pyroclasts can be carried upwards by this flow and as they spread out in the radial intrusion, they gradually sediment to form a fall deposit which may extend 1000’s m from the source. Meanwhile, material collapsing from the dense fountain forms aqueous pyroclastic flows which may also spread 1000’s m from the vent forming a flow deposit on the seabed. Quantification of the controls on the concurrent fall and flow deposits, and comparison with field observations, including from the 2012 eruption of Havre Volcano in the South Pacific, open the way to new understanding of submarine eruptions.

Monitoring the flux of gas from volcanoes is a fundamental component of volcano monitoring programs and is used as a basis for eruption forecasting. Here, the authors present a new method using video images of volcanic gas plumes to measure the speed of convective structures and to estimate volcanic fluxes.

Outcomes are reported from an antimicrobial-resistance research initiative into the infection control offered by downward laminar-flow ventilation in hospital operating theatres. Pre-cooled air is forced down onto the patient with the intention of diverting airborne pathogens from the surgical wound. The concept was commercialised in the early 1970s as the Ultra Clean Ventilation (UCV) system, a commonly applied contemporary solution. Data collected by the authors in unoccupied UCV theatres in a recently completed acute hospital indicate that as the warming air descends into the occupied zone, it may be subject to recirculation within the suite of spaces. This phenomenon is confirmed by the authors’ experimental modelling. Increasing the residence time of microorganisms will increase the probability of surgical site infection (SSI). An alternative is proposed: an upflow displacement ventilation scheme in combination with a localised source of filtered air to ventilate the wound as required. Likely ventilation flows are modelled experimentally and compared with those of the downdraught-ventilated UCV type. The alternative arrangement appears to provide comparable risk of SSI, while requiring less energy to drive the ventilation system. The concept is developed into a novel surgical theatre proposal in which background airflows are driven by natural buoyancy. 'Policy relevance' It is doubtful that the UCV configuration for surgical theatres fulfils its original design intent. New evidence contributes to an evolving concern that the system may not eliminate the risk of SSIs of airborne origin. If airborne transmission of infection in surgery is, in practice, a very minor concern, as some surgeons believe the resource-intensive UCV configuration is unnecessary. At a global scale, surgical equity is not served by the complexity, capital and operating costs of this model with its high maintenance burden. The alternative upflow-ventilated surgical theatre described, being a configuration rather than a product, could be created by using locally available construction.
