Isocorydine (ICD) exhibits strong antitumor effects on numerous human cell lines. However, the anticancer activity of ICD against oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) has not been reported. The anticancer activity, migration and invasion ability, and changes in the cytoskeleton morphology and mechanical properties of ICD in OSCC were determined. Changes in the contents of reactive oxygen species (ROS), the mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), ATP, and mitochondrial respiratory chain complex enzymes Ⅰ–Ⅳ in cancer cells were studied. ICD significantly inhibited the proliferation of oral tongue squamous cells (Cal-27), with an IC50 of 0.61 mM after 24 h of treatment. The invasion, migration, and adhesion of cancer cells were decreased, and cytoskeletal actin was deformed and depolymerized. In comparison to an untreated group, the activities of mitochondrial respiratory chain complex enzymes I-IV were significantly decreased by 50.72%, 27.39%, 77.27%, and 73.89%, respectively. The ROS production increased, the MMP decreased by 43.65%, and the ATP content decreased to 17.1 ± 0.001 (mmol/mL); ultimately, the apoptosis rate of cancer cells increased up to 10.57% after 24 h of action. These findings suggest that ICD exerted an obvious anticancer activity against OSCC and may inhibit Cal-27 proliferation and growth by causing mitochondrial dysfunction and interrupting cellular energy.

BackgroundIn recent years, the incidence of insulin resistance is increasing, and it can cause a variety of Metabolic syndrome. Ginsenosides have been clinically proven to improve fat metabolism and reduce insulin resistance, but their components and mechanism of action are still unclear.ObjectiveGinsenoside, a bioactive compound derived from ginseng, exhibits significant potential in treating obesity, diabetes, and metabolic disorders. Despite evidence supporting its efficacy in ameliorating insulin resistance (IR) in obesity, the specific bioactive components and underlying mechanisms remain obscure. In this study, we endeavored to elucidate the potential molecular targets and pathways influenced by ginsenoside Rh3 (GRh3) to ameliorate IR in liver tissue. We employed a comprehensive approach that integrates system pharmacology and bioinformatics analysis.Materials and methodsOur methodology involved the identification of candidate targets for GRh3 and the profiling of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) related to IR in individuals with insulin resistance. The coalescence of candidate targets and DEGs facilitated the construction of a “GRh3-targets-disease” network for each tissue type, ultimately yielding 38 shared target genes. Subsequently, we conducted pathway enrichment analysis, established protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks, and identified hub targets among the GRh3 targets and IR-related DEGs. Additionally, we conducted animal experiments to corroborate the role of these hub targets in the context of GRh3.ResultsOur investigation identified a total of 38 overlapping targets as potential candidates. Notably, our analysis revealed crucial hub targets such as EGFR, SRC, ESR1, MAPK1, and CASP3, alongside implicated signaling pathways, including those related to insulin resistance, the FoxO signaling pathway, the PPAR signaling pathway, and the IL-17 signaling pathway. This study establishes a robust foundation for the mechanisms underlying GRh3’s efficacy in mitigating IR. Furthermore, these results suggest that GRh3 may serve as a representative compound within the ginsenoside family.ConclusionThis study elucidates the potential molecular targets and associated pathways through which GRh3 ameliorates IR, showcasing its multifaceted nature, spanning multiple targets, pathways, and mechanisms. These findings establish a robust foundation for subsequent experimental inquiries and clinical applications.

Abstract Federated Learning (FL) suffers from the Non-IID problem in practice, which poses a challenge for efficient and accurate model training. To address this challenge, prior research has introduced clustered FL (CFL), which involves clustering clients and training them separately. Despite its potential benefits, CFL can be computationally and communicationally expensive when the data distribution is unknown beforehand. This is because CFL involves the entire neural networks of involved clients in computing the clusters during training, which can become increasingly time-consuming with large-sized models. To tackle this issue, this paper proposes an efficient CFL approach called LayerCFL that employs a Layer-wised clustering technique. In LayerCFL, clients are clustered based on a limited number of layers of neural networks that are pre-selected using statistical and experimental methods. Our experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of LayerCFL in mitigating the impact of Non-IID data, improving the accuracy of clustering, and enhancing computational efficiency.

Background. Serum uric acid (SUA) and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) were closely related to the body’s metabolism. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between HbA1c and SUA in adults. Methods. This study selected 7293 participants aged ≥20 from 2011 to 2020 in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). The multivariate linear regression model was used to test the association between HbA1c and SUA. Subgroup analysis was performed according to age, gender, race, and body mass index (BMI). This study solved the relationship between HbA1c and SUA by fitting a smooth curve. Finally, the inflection point in the nonlinear relationship was calculated by the recursive algorithm, and the relationship between HbA1c and SUA on both sides of the inflection point was analyzed by the two-segment piecewise linear regression model. Results. All 7293 participants found a negative correlation between HbA1c and SUA by completely adjusting the model (β = −7.93 and 95% CI: −9.49–−6.37). In addition, when this study was stratified by gender, age, race, and BMI status, this negative correlation was still statistically significant. In the subgroup analysis, we found that the relationship between the two had different results due to gender differences. In men, HbA1c had a significant negative correlation with SUA. However, in women, the HbA1c value was positively correlated with SUA before 6.8%, and the HbA1c value was negatively correlated with SUA after 6.8%, which indicates that the relationship between HbA1c and SUA in women has changed in prediabetes and diabetes. Conclusion. This study shows that HbA1c is positively correlated with SUA in American adults before 7%. There is a negative correlation after the HbA1c value of 7%.

Pore structure, as the focus of shale reservoir research, has important influence on the occurrence of shale oil. In this paper, 10 shale core samples from the 7th member of Triassic Yanchang Formation (Chang 7 member) in Huachi area, Ordos Basin were selected to carry out scanning electron microscope (SEM) observation and low-temperature nitrogen adsorption experiment, and the fractal dimension was calculated to quantitatively characterize the pore structure of shale in the research area combined with fractal FHH model. On this basis, the relationship between fractal dimension and pore structure parameters and oil-bearing parameters was discussed, and the main influencing factors of pore development of shale in the Chang 7 member were determined. The results show that the shale of the Chang 7 member in Huachi area has high organic matter abundance, which are good-to-excellent source rocks mainly composed of quartz and clay minerals, with good oil-bearing property (up to the middle oil-bearing level) and mobility. The reservoir space is dominated by intergranular pores, intragranular pores and a small amount of organic pores. There are two types of pore morphology, namely, parallel plate-shaped slit+unilateral slit and ink bottle-shaped + parallel plate-shaped slit. The pores are mainly micropores and mesopores, with macropores less developed. Most samples have fractal characteristics. The fractal dimension D1 of small pores is between 2.264 7 and 2.714 9, and the fractal dimension D2 of large pores is between 2.373 3 and 2.77 7. Among them, D2 has a good correlation with surface area, pore volume, average pore diameter and S1, which can characterize the development characteristics of pore structure and oil-bearing property of shale, while D1 can only characterize the mobility of shale oil. The pore development of shale is mainly controlled by TOC and quartz content, and has a certain relationship with feldspar content, while clay mineral content is not the main influencing factor.

A large number of sandstone interlayers were developed in the shale strata of the 7th member of the Triassic Yanchang Formation (Chang 7 member) in the Ordos Basin. These sandstone interlayers are frequently accompanied by abnormally high natural gamma values as high as 330.5 API. As a result, they are undistingui shable from shale on well profile. To characterize the high-gamma sandstones, the clastic rocks of the Chang 7 member were classified into fine sandstone, siltstone, argillaceous siltstone, silty mudstone, mudstone and shale according to grain size and structural characteristics. Conventional logging data were recalculated and combined into two new parameters—A and B. The new intersection chart composed of parameters A and B and natural gamma logging data can effectively distinguish and identify normal sandstone and high-gamma sandstone in the Chang 7 member. The plane distribution of cumulative thickness of high-gamma sandstone in the Chang 7 member shows that the high-gamma sandstone is mainly located in the southwest of the study area. The finger-like distribution of high-gamma sandstone from the edge to the center of the lake basin indicates that its formation may be related to the volcanic eruption during sedimentary period.

The Sinian-Cambrian tight carbonate strata locating on the northern slope (NS) of the paleo-uplift of central Sichuan Basin is the frontier for ultra-deep natural gas exploration. The tectonic evolution of the NS determined the accumulation process and current distribution of oil and gas. In this study, based on integrating drilling, seismic and test data, a 3D basin simulation software was used to carry out the structural restoration. This paper focused on the restoration of the tectonic evolution at the bottom of Cambrian in the NS and Gaoshiti-Moxi (GM) areas, and the tectonic pattern of hydrocarbon accumulation during critical periods was re-constructed. At the end of the Tongwan Movement, the NS area was locally uplifted to the high regions, while paleo-geomorphic depressions formed between the NS and GM areas. In the Late Caledonian, the NS and GM areas displayed a structural pattern similar to 'saddle-domal'. In the Indosinian period, the area to the north of Moxi gradually inclined northwards to form a monocline. In the early stage of Yanshanian Movement, the dip angle of Cambrian in the NS area further increased until it became stable and was consistent with the current tectonic pattern found after Mid-Yanshanian Movement. The paleo-tectonic morphology in the NS area during the Tongwan period laid a solid foundation for the development of large-scale platform margin and inner beach reservoirs in the Sinian Dengying Formation. Controlled by large-scale transgression, the NS area and the Deyang-Anyue rift trough were more conducive to the development of black shale in the Qiongzhusi Formation due to deeper sedimentary water body and higher degree of confinement-hypoxia. The oil-cracking in the Sinian-Cambrian paleo-oil reservoirs of the NS area occurred earlier than that in the GM area. The difference between thermal evolution and source rock characteristics of the Qiongzhusi Formation in the NS and GM areas led to a lighter δ13C1 of natural gas in the NS area. The coupling of local tectonic highs and lithologic traps controlled the formation and preservation of independent paleo-oil and natural gas reservoirs in the NS area.

The ultimate recovery of shale oil is mostly dependent upon the occurrence and content of free oil within the nano-scaled pore network of shale reservoirs. Due to the nanoporous nature of shale, quantitatively characterizing the occurrence and content of free oil in shale is a formidable undertaking. To tackle this challenge, 12 lacustrine shale samples with diverse organic matter content from the Chang7 Member in the southern Ordos Basin were selected, and the characteristics of free oil occurrence were indirectly characterized by comparing changes in pore structure before and after organic solvent extraction. The free oil enrichment in shale was assessed using the oil saturation index (OSI), corrected oil saturation index (OSIcorr), and percentage of saturated hydrocarbons. The results revealed that slit-like interparticle pores with diameters less than 30 nm are dominant in the Chang7 shale. Conceptual models for the pore structures containing free oil were established for shale with total organic carbon (TOC) content less than 9% and greater than 9%, respectively. Shale samples with TOC content less than 9% exhibit a well-developed pore network characterized by relatively larger pore volume, surface area, and heterogeneity. Conversely, shale samples with TOC content exceeding 9% display a less developed pore network characterized by relatively smaller pore volume, surface area, and heterogeneity. Larger pore volume and lower organic matter abundance favor the enrichment of free oil within the lacustrine shale pore network. This study may have significant implications for understanding oil transport in shales.

C5-glyceryl-methylcytosine is a DNA modification that plays a role in the regulation of green alga photosynthesis and is catalysed by CMD1, using vitamin C (VC) as a co-substrate. Here, the authors provide insights into the catalytic mechanism of CMD1 by determining the crystal structures of apo CMD1 and CMD1 bound to either VC or DNA, as well as the ternary CMD1/VC/DNA complex structure.

Tunicate nanocellulose with its unique properties, such as excellent mechanical strength, high crystallinity, and good biodegradability, has potential to be used for the preparation of light management film with tunable transmittance and haze. Herein, we prepared a whole tunicate cellulose film with tunable haze levels, by mixing tunicate microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) and tunicate cellulose nanofibrils (CNF). Then, the obtained whole tunicate cellulose film with updated light management was used to modify the organic solar cell (OSC) substrate, aiming to improve the light utilization efficiency of OSC. Results showed that the dosage of MFC based on the weight of CNF was an important factor to adjust the haze and light transmittance of the prepared cellulose film. When the dosage of MFC was 3 wt.%, the haze of the obtained film increased 74.2% compared to the pure CNF film (39.2%). Moreover, the optimized tunicate cellulose film exhibited excellent mechanical properties (e.g., tensile strength of 168 MPa, toughness of 5.7 MJ/m3) and high thermal stability, which will be beneficial to the workability and durability of OSC. More interestingly, we applied the obtained whole tunicate cellulose film with a high haze (68.3%) and high light transmittance (85.0%) as an additional layer to be adhered to the glass substrate of OSC, and a notable improvement (6.5%) of the power conversion efficiency was achieved. With the use of biodegradable tunicate cellulose, this work provides a simple strategy to enhance light management of the transparent substrate of OSC for improving power conversion efficiency.

To clearly show how important the impact of side chains on organic solar cells (OSCs) is, we designed three acceptors IDIC-CxPh (x = 4, 5, or 6) via subtle side-chain regulation. Despite this small change, significant distinctions were detected. IDIC-C4Ph devices achieve an optimal efficiency of 13.94% under thermal annealing, but thermal-assistant solvent-vapor annealing hugely suppresses the efficiencies to 10%. However, the C6Ph side chain endows extremely disordered stacking orientations, generating moderate efficiencies of ~12.50%. Excitingly, the IDIC-C5Ph affords an unexpected two-channel π-π charge transport (TCCT) property, boosting the fill factor (FF) by up to 80.02% and efficiency to 14.56%, ranking the best among five-ring fused-ladder-type acceptors. Impressively, the special TCCT behavior of IDIC-C5Ph enables 470 nm thick-film OSC with a high FF of up to 70.12% and efficiency of 13.01%, demonstrating the great promise in fabricating large-scale OSCs. This study aims to provide a reference for the protection of the Archaeological Ruins of Liangzhu City. As a basis for the further preservation of these cultural relics, it is essential to analyze the microflora colonizing these soil objects. To do that, samples with microbial characteristics were obtained and analyzed by SEM and metagenomic sequencing to reveal the constitute of the microflora. We investigated the biodegradation of the protective material-epoxy resin by microorganisms in the Archaeological Ruins of Liangzhu City, and found that they would interact with each other, which would affect the performance of the epoxy resin. The specific mechanism of action requires further investigations. We evaluated the effect of ethyl orthosilicate on soil properties. Interestingly, we found that excess ethyl orthosilicate added to the soil of the Archaeological Ruins of Liangzhu City will cause a change in particle size and allowed the soil to condense in the laboratory. This indicates that the large use of orthosilicate may lead to intensified soil weathering, which in turn will cause soil erosion.

To avoid the lacquerware of the Nanhai No. 1 shipwreck from being corroded by microorganisms and to improve the knowledge on microbial ecology of the wood lacquers, we conducted a series of tests on the two water samples storing the lacquerware and colonies on the surface of the lacquerware. The high-throughput sequencing detected dominant fungal communities. After that, the fungal strains were isolated and then identified by amplification of ITS- 18S rRNA. Then the activity of ligninolytic and cellulolytic enzymes was detected on potato dextrose agar (PDA) plates with 0.04% (v/v) guaiacol and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) agar plates. Finally, we tested the biocide susceptibility of these fungi. Penicillium chrysogenum (NK-NH3) and Fusarium solani (NK- NH1) were the dominant fungi in the sample collected in April 2016 and June 2017. What is more, both showed activity of ligninolytic and cellulolytic enzymes. Four biocidal products (Preventol® D7, P91, BIT 20N, and Euxyl® K100) inhibited the growth of the fungal species in vitro effectively. In further research, the microbial community and environmental parameters in the museum should be monitored to assess the changes in the community and to detect potential microbial outbreaks.

The goal of this research was to analyze the fungal community responsible for the biodeterioration of a pirogue in the National Maritime Museum of China and to make recommendations for the protection of this artifact. Molecular identification of fungal strains isolated from the surface of the pirogue and the air of the storage room that were most closely related to Cladosporium, Penicillium, Talaromyces and Trichoderma spp. DNA extracted from the samples was sequenced on the Illumina MiSeq platform. The results showed that the predominant fungal genera present were Penicillium sp., Cladosporium sp. and Exophiala sp. Thereafter, cellulose degradation experiments were carried out on the predominant fungi screened by pure culturing. Finally, we tested the sensitivity of the predominant fungal isolates to four biocides. This work suggests that we should pay more attention to Penicillium sp. and Cladosporium sp. in the protection of wooden artifacts, and environmental control is recommended as the main means of protecting the pirogue.

To protect the lacquer plates from the Nanhai No. 1 shipwreck from being corroded by microorganisms, a series of studies were conducted on the four water-stored samples. The water samples were collected from the vessel where the lacquerware was stored in June and December 2017. In our study, high-throughput sequencing was conducted to reveal predominant bacterial communities. Then, three different media were used to isolate the dominant bacteria, and the 16S rRNA genes were sequenced. Next, we tested the degradation activity of lignin and cellulose by the isolated bacterial strains. After being cultured on a medium containing carboxylmethylcellulose (CMC), almost all the isolated strains (except Microbacterium sp. NK-NH4, Ochrobactrum sp. NK-NH9, and Bacillus megaterium NK-NH10) showed the capacity for cellulose degradation. In addition, the lignin peroxidase (Lip) and laccase activity of the strains were shown by culturing the strains on one medium with azure and on another medium with Remazol brilliant blue. The results indicated that the Lip activity of all the strains was low, whereas the laccase activity of Microbacterium sp. NK-NH4, Bacillus tequilensis NK-NH5, Bacillus subtilis NK-NH6, Bacillus megaterium NK-NH10, and Bacillus velezensis NK-NH11 was relatively high. Finally, we tested the bacteriostatic efficacy of four biocides—Preventol® D7, BIT 20N, P91, and Euxyl® K100. We found that most strains were sensitive to D7 and 20N, while K100 had almost no impact.

Polygonal fault systems are mainly found in fine-grained sediments. They are controlled by layers vertically and characterized by polygonal planform geometry. They are also characterized by small fault throw, high fault density, various strikes, and small lateral extension. Their genetic mechanisms, which are usually recognized as non-tectonic, include density inversion, dewatering contraction, gravitational loading, and dissolution-induced shear failure, with the last one being dominant. Many small extensional faults have been found in the Cretaceous in the Sanzhao sag of the Songliao Basin. Having the characteristics of polygonal faults vertically, horizontally and in shape, they are defined as typical polygonal fault systems. There are more polygonal fault systems in the formation with heavier dissolution, these polygonal fault systems may be formed by the mechanism of dissolution-induced shear failure. Polygonal fault systems are migration pathway for the Putaohua and Fuyang oil layers in the Sanzhao sag and they significantly control on oil-water distribution. The areas where sandstones and polygonal fault systems are developed together are favorable exploration areas. Based on the analysis of measuring methods and results of natural gas diffusion coefficient in rocks and the measurement of methane diffusion coefficient in the Upper Paleozoic rocks of the Ordos basin, this paper clarifies the meaning of natural gas diffusion coefficient in rocks and discusses its application in gas diffusion simulation and some influencing factors. There are three methods for measuring natural gas diffusion coefficient in rocks, including free gas method, water-dissolved method, and time delay method. The meanings of diffusive concentration and the influencing factors are different for the natural gas diffusion coefficients measured by these three methods. The diffusion coefficient measured by the free gas method is 1 to 2 order of magnitude less than that measured by the water-dissolved method, and 2 to 3 order of magnitude less than that measured by the time delay method. The meanings of diffusive concentration in the diffusive volume calculation must be in line with that in the diffusion coefficient measurement during the process of diffusive volume calculation. Natural gas diffusion coefficient in rocks has a linear relationship with porosity and a dynamic relationship with temperature, and it logarithmically decreases with pressure. Images are the most important carrier of human information. Moreover, how to safely transmit digital images through public channels has become an urgent problem. In this paper, we propose a novel image encryption algorithm, called chaotic compressive sensing (CS) encryption (CCSE), which can not only improve the efficiency of image transmission but also introduce the high security of the chaotic system. Specifically, the proposed CCSE can fully leverage the advantages of the Chebyshev chaotic system and CS, enabling it to withstand various attacks, such as differential attacks, and exhibit robustness. First, we use a sparse trans-form to sparse the plaintext image and thenuse theArnold transformtoperturb the image pixels.After that,we elaborateaChebyshevToeplitz chaotic sensing matrix for CCSE. By using this Toeplitz matrix, the perturbed image is compressed and sampled to reduce the transmission bandwidth and the amount of data. Finally, a bilateral diffusion operator and a chaotic encryption operator are used to perturb and expand the image pixels to change the pixel position and value of the compressed image, and ultimately obtain an encrypted image. Experimental results show that our method can be resistant to various attacks, such as the statistical attack and noise attack, and can outperform its current competitors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

So far, the recombination center of photogenerated carriers caused by surface defects in ZnO results in poor thickness tolerance and inefficient charge extraction, severely limiting the performance and stability of inverted organic solar cells (OSCs). Therefore, hybrid cathode interfacial layers (CILs) are fabricated in devices by doping naphthalimide-based molecules (NE and NDA) into ZnO, and significantly improved performance and stability are achieved for all tested devices. It is found that doping NE or NDA not only solves the problems of ZnO aggregation and surface defects, but also enhances the ability of charge transfer and lowers the work function of cathode. As a result, the OSCs based on PM6:Y6 with ZnO:NE 1% as a CIL exhibit the highest power conversion efficiency (16.72%), which is better than that of pristine ZnO. The research shows that N atoms in naphthalimide react with Zn ions, and -NH bonds form noncovalent interaction with heteroatoms in the blend, which is conducive to the formation of better chemical bond in hybrid materials and providing more transfer channels for carriers. This study highlights a promising strategy for enhancing the performance of inverted OSCs by the hybrid CIL strategy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
