Thermalization in quantum many-body systems, the process by which they naturally evolve toward thermal equilibrium, typically unfolds over timescales set by the underlying relaxation mechanisms. Yet, the spatial aspect of thermalization in these systems is less understood. We investigate this phenomenon within the nonequilibrium steady state (NESS) of a Bose-Hubbard chain subject at its boundaries to coherent driving and dissipation, a setup inspired by current designs in circuit quantum electrodynamics. We uncover a two-stage thermalization process along the spatial dimension. Close to the coherent drive, the U(1) symmetry of the phase of the photonic field is restored over a short length scale, while its amplitude relaxes over a much larger scale. This opens up an extensive region of the chain characterized by a chaotic yet nonthermal phase. Dynamical fingerprints of chaos in this NESS are probed using semiclassical out-of-time-order correlators (OTOCs) within the truncated Wigner approximation (TWA). We explore the conditions underlying this protracted thermalization in space and argue that similar prethermal chaotic phases are likely to occur in a broad range of extended driven-dissipative systems., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

This text is a short introduction to the physics of driven-dissipative many-body systems, focusing on a few selected topics. Beyond its more ``historical'' interest in the study of atomic physics and quantum optics, presently the modeling and studying dissipative phenomena in open quantum systems is pivotal to understanding quantum hardware platforms. While the lack of a thermodynamic potential for these out-of-equilibrium open systems makes it theoretically challenging to investigate their physics, at the same time it allows going beyond the thermodynamic paradigms and investigating new and exotic phenomena. We will focus on one of the simplest, yet most effective, descriptions of open quantum systems, namely the (Gorini-Kossakowski-Sudarshan-) Lindblad master equation. This phenomenological approach describes quantum systems that weakly interact with their surrounding environment. Landau-Zener-St\"uckelberg-Majorana (LZSM) interference emerges when the parameters of a $\textit{qubit}$ are periodically modulated across an avoided level crossing. Here, we investigate the occurrence of the LZSM phenomenon in nonlinear multilevel bosonic systems, where the interference pattern is determined by multiple energy levels and cannot be described by a level crossing between only two states. We fabricate two superconducting resonators made of flux-tunable Josephson junction arrays. The first device is very weakly nonlinear (the nonlinearity is smaller than the photon-loss rate) and, when a weak driving field is applied, it behaves as a linear resonator, yet shows the same LZSM interference as in a two-level system. Notably, here the interference originates from multiple avoided level crossings of the harmonic ladder. When subjected to a stronger drive, nonlinear effects start playing a role, and the interference pattern departs from the one observed in two-level systems. We demonstrate that, when two or more LZSM interference peaks merge, dissipative quantum chaos emerges. In the second device, where the nonlinearity surpasses the photon-loss rate, we observe additional LZSM interference peaks due to Kerr multiphoton resonances. When described under the light of the Floquet theory, these resonances can be interpreted as synthetic modes of an array of coupled cavities. We derive a simple effective model highlighting the essential features of the entirety of these phenomena. As the control of LZSM in qubit systems led to the implementation of fast protocols for characterization and state preparation, our findings pave the way to better control of nonlinear resonators, with implications for diverse quantum technological platforms.

Non-Hermitian systems have attracted much interest in recent decades, driven partly by the existence of exotic spectral singularities, known as exceptional points (EPs), where the dimensionality of the system evolution operator is reduced. Among various intriguing applications, the discovery of EPs has suggested the potential for implementing a symmetric mode switch, when encircling them in a system parameter space. However, subsequent theoretical and experimental works have revealed that {\it dynamical} encirclement of EPs invariably results in asymmetric mode conversion; namely, the mode switching depends only on the winding direction but not on the initial state. This chirality arises from the failure of adiabaticity due to the complex spectrum of non-Hermitian systems. Although the chirality revealed has undoubtedly made a significant impact in the field, a realization of the originally sought symmetric adiabatic passage in non-Hermitian systems with EPs has since been elusive. In this work, we bridge this gap and theoretically demonstrate that adiabaticity, and therefore a symmetric state transfer, is achievable when dynamically winding around an EP. This becomes feasible by specifically choosing a trajectory in the system parameter space along which the corresponding evolution operator attains a real spectrum. In open quantum systems, first- and second-order dissipative phase transitions (DPTs) can emerge in the thermodynamic limit from the competition between unitary evolution, driving terms, and dissipation. The order of a DPT is defined by the continuity properties of the steady state. Until now, second-order DPTs have predominantly been investigated theoretically, while first-order DPTs have been observed in key experiments based on the theory of the single-photon driven Kerr resonator. We present here the first comprehensive experimental and theoretical analysis of both first and second-order DPTs in a two-photon (i.e., parametrically) driven Kerr superconducting resonator. Firstly, we characterize the steady state and its main features at the second- and first-order critical points: squeezing below vacuum and coexistence of two phases with different photon numbers, respectively. Then, by continuously monitoring the system along quantum trajectories, we study the non-equilibrium dynamics across the critical points. We witness the hysteresis cycles associated with the first-order DPT and the spontaneous symmetry breaking due to the second-order DPT. Applying the spectral theory of the Liouvillian superoperator, we develop efficient procedures to quantify the critical slowing down associated with the timescales of these processes. When scaling towards the thermodynamic limit, these timescales span five orders of magnitude. Our results corroborate the predictions derived using the Liouvillian theory of DPTs. This work stands as a compelling example of engineering and controlling of criticality in superconducting circuits. The vacuum (i.e., the ground state) of a system in ultrastrong light-matter coupling contains particles that cannot be emitted without any dynamical perturbation and is thus called virtual. We propose a protocol for inducing and observing real mechanical excitations of a mirror enabled by the virtual photons in the ground state of a tripartite system, where a resonant optical cavity is ultrastrongly coupled to a two-level system (qubit) and, at the same time, optomechanically coupled to a mechanical resonator. Real phonons are coherently emitted when the frequency of the two-level system is modulated at a frequency comparable to that of the mechanical resonator and, therefore much lower than the optical frequency. We demonstrate that this hybrid effect is a direct consequence of the virtual photon population in the ground state. Within a classical physics analogy, attaching a weight to a spring only changes its resting position, whereas dynamically modulating the weight makes the system oscillate. In our case, however, the weight is the vacuum itself. We propose and accurately characterize a hybrid superconducting-optomechanical setup based on available state-of-the-art technology, where this effect can be experimentally observed., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures

We present a new paradigm for the dynamical simulation of interacting many-boson open quantum systems. The method relies on a variational ansatz for the $n$-boson density matrix, in terms of a superposition of photon-added coherent states. It is most efficient for the simulation of driven-dissipative systems where the state is well described by quantum fluctuations on top of a displaced field, making it suitable for the simulation of several coupled modes with large occupation numbers, that are otherwise very challenging using a Fock-space expansion. We test our method on several examples, demonstrating its potential application to the predictive simulation of interacting bosonic systems and cat qubits., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

We introduce a criterion to characterize quantum chaos in driven-dissipative open quantum systems, based on the spectral decomposition of the Liouvillian and of quantum trajectories. The method generalizes the analysis of the statistical distribution of complex Liouvillian eigenvalues to the state of the system at an arbitrary given time. As a result, we can separately characterize chaos in the transient dynamics and in the steady state of the system. The method naturally introduces a selection of the relevant Liouvillian spectral components of the quantum state, thus lifting the requirement of additional selection criteria based on symmetry sectors or an energy cutoff. We apply the method to the study of quantum chaos in a boundary-driven-dissipative Bose-Hubbard chain. The system displays three phases, respectively characterized by integrability, transient chaos, and steady-state chaos. Most of the cases characterized by quantum chaos become integrable in the mean-field classical limit. The quantum trajectory analysis shows that quantum chaos in these cases originates exclusively from quantum fluctuations associated with the dissipation mechanism. It provides strong evidence for the existence of an emergent dissipative quantum chaos., Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures

We investigate and characterize the emergence of finite-component dissipative phase transitions (DPTs) in nonlinear photon resonators subject to $n$-photon driving and dissipation. Exploiting a semiclassical approach, we derive general results on the occurrence of second-order DPTs in this class of systems. We show that for all odd $n$, no second-order DPT can occur while, for even $n$, the competition between higher-order nonlinearities determines the nature of the criticality and allows for second-order DPTs to emerge only for $n=2$ and $n=4$. As pivotal examples, we study the full quantum dynamics of three- and four-photon driven-dissipative Kerr resonators, confirming the prediction of the semiclassical analysis on the nature of the transitions. The stability of the vacuum and the typical timescales needed to access the different phases are also discussed. We also show a first-order DPT where multiple solutions emerge around zero, low, and high-photon numbers. Our results highlight the crucial role played by strong and weak symmetries in triggering critical behaviors, providing a Liouvillian framework to study the effects of high-order nonlinear processes in driven-dissipative systems, that can be applied to problems in quantum sensing and information processing., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures

Niobium nitride (NbN) is a particularly promising material for quantum technology applications, as entails the degree of reproducibility necessary for large-scale of superconducting circuits. We demonstrate that resonators based on NbN thin films present a one-photon internal quality factor above 10$^5$ maintaining a high impedance (larger than 2k$\Omega$), with a footprint of approximately 50x100 $\mu$m$^2$ and a self-Kerr nonlinearity of few tenths of Hz. These quality factors, mostly limited by losses induced by the coupling to two-level systems, have been maintained for kinetic inductances ranging from tenths to hundreds of pH/square. We also demonstrate minimal variations in the performance of the resonators during multiple cooldowns over more than nine months. Our work proves the versatility of niobium nitride high-kinetic inductance resonators, opening perspectives towards the fabrication of compact, high-impedance and high-quality multimode circuits, with sizable interactions., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures

We propose a mechanism to engineer an $n$-photon blockade in a nonlinear cavity with an $n$-photon parametric drive $\lambda(\hat{a}^{\dag n}+\hat{a}^n)$. When an $n$-photon-excitation resonance condition is satisfied, the presence of n photons in the cavity suppresses the absorption of the subsequent photons. To confirm the validity of this proposal, we study the n-photon blockade in an atom-cavity system, a Kerr-nonlinear resonator, and two-coupled Kerr nonlinear resonators. Our results demonstrate that $n$-photon bunching and $(n+1)$-photon antibunching can be simultaneously obtained in these systems. This effect is due both to the anharmonic energy ladder and to the nature of the $n$-photon drive. To show the importance of the drive, we compare the results of the $n$-photon drive with a coherent (one-photon) drive, proving the enhancement of antibunching in the parametric-drive case. This proposal is general and can be applied to realize the $n$-photon blockade in other nonlinear systems.

Nontrivial spectral properties of non-Hermitian systems can lead to intriguing effects with no counterparts in Hermitian systems. For instance, in a two-mode photonic system, by dynamically winding around an exceptional point (EP) a controlled asymmetric-symmetric mode switching can be realized. That is, the system can either end up in one of its eigenstates, regardless of the initial eigenmode, or it can switch between the two states on demand, by simply controlling the winding direction. However, for multimode systems with higher-order EPs or multiple low-order EPs, the situation can be more involved, and the ability to control asymmetric-symmetric mode switching can be impeded, due to the breakdown of adiabaticity. Here we demonstrate that this difficulty can be overcome by winding around exceptional curves by additionally crossing diabolic points. We consider a four-mode $\cal PT$-symmetric bosonic system as a platform for experimental realization of such a multimode switch. Encoding quantum information onto bosonic systems is a promising route to quantum error correction. In a cat code, this encoding relies on the confinement of the system's dynamics onto the two-dimensional manifold spanned by Schr\"odinger cats of opposite parity. In dissipative cat qubits, an engineered dissipation scheme combining two-photon drive and loss has been used to autonomously stabilize this manifold, ensuring passive protection against bit-flip errors, regardless of their origin. In Kerr cat qubits, where highly-performing gates can be engineered, two-photon drive and Kerr nonlinearity cooperate to confine the system to a two-fold degenerate ground state manifold spanned by cats of opposite parity. Dissipative, Hamiltonian, and hybrid confinements have been investigated at resonance. Here, we propose a critical cat code, where both two-photon loss and Kerr nonlinearity are present, and the two-photon drive is allowed to be out of resonance. The performance of this code is assessed via the spectral theory of Liouvillians in all configurations, from the purely dissipative to the Kerr limit. We show that large detunings and small, but non-negligible, two-photon loss rates are fundamental to achieve optimal performance. We demonstrate that the competition between nonlinearity and detuning results in a first-order dissipative phase transition, leading to a squeezed vacuum steady state. To achieve the maximal suppression of the logical bit-flip rate requires initializing the system in the metastable state emerging from the first-order transition, and we detail a protocol to do so. Efficiently operating over a broad range of detuning values, the critical cat code is particularly resistant to random frequency shifts characterizing multiple-qubit operations, opening venues for the realization of reliable protocols for scalable and concatenated bosonic qubit architectures., Comment: 18 pages, 17 figures

Finite simplex lattice models are used in different branches of science, e.g., in condensed matter physics, when studying frustrated magnetic systems and non-Hermitian localization phenomena; or in chemistry, when describing experiments with mixtures. An $n$-simplex represents the simplest possible polytope in $n$ dimensions, e.g., a line segment, a triangle, and a tetrahedron in one, two, and three dimensions, respectively. In this work, we show that various fully solvable, in general non-Hermitian, $n$-simplex lattice models {with open boundaries} can be constructed from the high-order field-moments space of quadratic bosonic systems. Namely, we demonstrate that such $n$-simplex lattices can be formed by a dimensional reduction of highly-degenerate iterated polytope chains in $(k>n)$-dimensions, which naturally emerge in the field-moments space. Our findings indicate that the field-moments space of bosonic systems provides a versatile platform for simulating real-space $n$-simplex lattices exhibiting non-Hermitian phenomena, and yield valuable insights into the structure of many-body systems exhibiting similar complexity. Amongst a variety of practical applications, these simplex structures can offer a physical setting for implementing the discrete fractional Fourier transform, an indispensable tool for both quantum and classical signal processing., Comment: 16 pages

The Exceptional Points (EPs) of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians (NHHs) are spectral degeneracies associated with coalescing eigenvalues and eigenvectors which are associated with remarkable dynamical properties. These EPs can be generated experimentally in open quantum systems, evolving under a Lindblad equation, by postselecting on trajectories that present no quantum jumps, such that the dynamics is ruled by a NHH. Interestingly, changing the way the information used for postselection is collected leads to different unravelings, i.e., different set of trajectories which average to the same Lindblad equation, but are associated with a different NHH. Here, we exploit this mechanism to create and control EPs solely by changing the measurement we postselect on. Our scheme is based on a realistic homodyne reading of the emitted leaking photons with a weak-intensity laser (a process which we call $\beta$-dyne), which we show generates a tunable NHH, that can exhibit EPs even though the system does have any in the absence of the laser. We consider a few illustrative examples pointing the dramatic effects that different postselections can have on the spectral features of the NHH, paving the road towards engineering of EPs in simple quantum systems.

We introduce a class of quantum optical Hamiltonian characterized by three-body couplings, and propose a circuit-QED scheme based on state-of-the-art technology that implements the considered model. Unlike two-body light-matter interactions, this three-body coupling Hamiltonian is exclusively composed of terms which do not conserve the particle number. We explore the three-body ultrastrong coupling regime, showing the emergence of a superradiant phase transition which is of first order, is characterized by the breaking of a $\mathbb{Z}_2\times \mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry and has a strongly non-Gaussian nature. Indeed, in contrast to what is observed in any two-body-coupling model, in proximity of the transition the ground state exhibits a divergent coskewness, i.e., quantum correlations that cannot be captured within semiclassical and Gaussian approximations. Furthermore, we demonstrate the robustness of our findings by including dissipative processes in the model, showing that the steady-state of the system inherits from the ground states the most prominent features of the transition., Comment: 6+7 pages, 3 figures

Bosonic quantum codes redundantly encode quantum information in the states of a quantum harmonic oscillator, making it possible to detect and correct errors. Schr\"odinger cat codes -- based on the superposition of two coherent states with opposite displacements -- can correct phase-flip errors induced by dephasing, but they are vulnerable to bit-flip errors induced by particle loss. Here, we develop a bosonic quantum code relying on squeezed cat states, i.e. cat states made of a linear superposition of displaced-squeezed states. Squeezed cat states allow to partially correct errors caused by particle loss, while at the same time improving the protection against dephasing. We present a comprehensive analysis of the squeezed cat code, including protocols for code generation and elementary quantum gates. We characterize the effect of both particle loss and dephasing and develop an optimal recovery protocol that is suitable to be implemented on currently available quantum hardware. We show that with moderate squeezing, and using typical parameters of state-of-the-art quantum hardware platforms, the squeezed cat code has a resilience to particle loss errors that significantly outperforms that of the conventional cat code., Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables; version 2

Open quantum systems can undergo dissipative phase transitions, and their critical behavior can be exploited in sensing applications. For example, it can be used to enhance the fidelity of superconducting qubit readout measurements, a central problem toward the creation of reliable quantum hardware. A recently introduced measurement protocol, named ``critical parametric quantum sensing'', uses the parametric (two-photon driven) Kerr resonator's driven-dissipative phase transition to reach single-qubit detection fidelity of 99.9\% [arXiv:2107.04503]. In this work, we improve upon the previous protocol by using machine learning-based classification algorithms to \textit{efficiently and rapidly} extract information from this critical dynamics, which has so far been neglected to focus only on stationary properties. These classification algorithms are applied to the time series data of weak quantum measurements (homodyne detection) of a circuit-QED implementation of the Kerr resonator coupled to a superconducting qubit. Dissipative Kerr solitons arising from parametric gain in ring microresonators are usually described within a classical mean-field framework. Here, we develop a quantum-mechanical model of dissipative Kerr solitons in terms of the truncated Wigner method, which accounts for quantum effects to lowest order. We show that the soliton experiences a finite lifetime due to quantum fluctuations originating from losses. Reading the results in terms of the theory of open quantum systems, allows to estimate the Liouvillian spectrum of the system. It is characterized by a set of eigenvalues with finite imaginary part and vanishing real part in the limit of vanishing quantum fluctuations. This feature shows that dissipative Kerr solitons are a specific class of dissipative time crystals.

Phase transitions in non-Hermitian systems are at the focus of cutting edge theoretical and experimental research. On the one hand, parity-time- ($\cal PT$-) and anti-$\cal PT$-symmetric physics have gained ever-growing interest, due to the existence of non-Hermitian spectral singularities called exceptional points (EPs). On the other, topological and localization transitions in non-Hermitian systems reveal new phenomena, e.g., the non-Hermitian skin effect and the absence of conventional bulk-boundary correspondence. The great majority of previous studies exclusively focus on non-Hermitian Hamiltonians, whose realization requires an {\it a priori} fine-tuned extended lattices to exhibit topological and localization transition phenomena.In this work, we show how the non-Hermitian localization phenomena can naturally emerge in the synthetic field moments space of zero-dimensional bosonic systems, e.g., in anti-$\cal PT$ and $\cal PT$-symmetric quantum dimers. This offers an opportunity to simulate localization transitions in low-dimensional systems, without the need to construct complex arrays of, e.g., coupled cavities or waveguides. Indeed, the field moment equations of motion can describe an equivalent (quasi-)particle moving in a one-dimensional (1D) synthetic lattice. This synthetic field moments space can exhibit a nontrivial localization phenomena, such as non-Hermitian skin effect, induced by the presence of highly-degenerate EPs. We demonstrate our findings on the example of an anti-$\cal PT$-symmetric two-mode system, whose higher-order field moments eigenspace is emulated by a synthetic 1D non-Hermitian Hamiltonian having a Sylvester matrix shape. Our results can be directly verified in state-of-the-art optical setups, such as superconducting circuits and toroidal resonators, by measuring photon moments or correlation functions., Comment: 18 pages

The paradigm of second-order phase transitions (PTs) induced by spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) in thermal and quantum systems is a pillar of modern physics that has been fruitfully applied to out-of-equilibrium open quantum systems. Dissipative phase transitions (DPTs) of second order are often connected with SSB, in close analogy with well-known thermal second-order PTs in closed quantum and classical systems. That is, a second-order DPT should disappear by preventing the occurrence of SSB. Here, we prove this statement to be wrong, showing that, surprisingly, SSB is not a necessary condition for the occurrence of second-order DPTs in out-of-equilibrium open quantum systems. We analytically prove this result using the Liouvillian theory of dissipative phase transitions, and demonstrate this anomalous transition in a paradigmatic laser model, where we can arbitrarily remove SSB while retaining criticality, and on a $Z_2$-symmetric model of a two-photon Kerr resonator. This new type of phase transition cannot be interpreted as a "semiclassical" bifurcation, because, after the DPT, the system steady state remains unique., Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures, corrected minor typos

The characterization of open quantum systems is a central and recurring problem for the development of quantum technologies. For time-independent systems, an (often unique) steady state describes the average physics once all the transient processes have faded out, but interesting quantum properties can emerge at intermediate timescales. Given a Lindblad master equation, these properties are encoded in the spectrum of the Liouvillian whose diagonalization, however, is a challenge even for small-size quantum systems. Here, we propose a new method to efficiently provide the Liouvillian spectral decomposition. We call this method an Arnoldi-Lindblad time evolution, because it exploits the algebraic properties of the Liouvillian superoperator to efficiently construct a basis for the Arnoldi iteration problem. The advantage of our method is double: (i) It provides a faster-than-the-clock method to efficiently obtain the steady state, meaning that it produces the steady state through time evolution shorter than needed for the system to reach stationarity. (ii) It retrieves the low-lying spectral properties of the Liouvillian with a minimal overhead, allowing to determine both which quantum properties emerge and for how long they can be observed in a system. This method is general and model-independent, and lends itself to the study of large systems where the determination of the Liouvillian spectrum can be numerically demanding but the time evolution of the density matrix is still doable. Our results can be extended to time evolution with a time-dependent Liouvillian. In particular, our method works for Floquet (i.e., periodically driven) systems, where it allows not only to construct the Floquet map for the slow-decaying processes, but also to retrieve the stroboscopic steady state and the eigenspectrum of the Floquet map. The formalism for non-Hermitian quantum systems sometimes blurs the underlying physics. We present a systematic study of the vielbein-like formalism which transforms the Hilbert space bundles of non-Hermitian systems into the conventional ones, rendering the induced Hamiltonian to be Hermitian. In other words, any non-Hermitian Hamiltonian can be "transformed" into a Hermitian one without altering the physics. Thus we show how to find a reference frame (corresponding to Einstein's quantum elevator) in which a non-Hermitian system, equipped with a non-trivial Hilbert space metric, reduces to a Hermitian system within the standard formalism of quantum mechanics., Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures

Phase transitions of thermal systems and the laser threshold were first connected more than forty years ago. Despite the nonequilibrium nature of the laser, the Landau theory of thermal phase transitions, applied directly to the Scully-Lamb laser model (SLLM), indicates that the laser threshold is a second-order phase transition, associated with a $U(1)$ spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB). To capture the genuine nonequilibrium phase transition of the SLLM (i.e., a single-mode laser without a saturable absorber), here we employ a quantum theory of dissipative phase transitions. Our results confirm that the $U(1)$ SSB can occur at the lasing threshold but, in contrast to the Landau theory and semiclassical approximation, they signal that the SLLM "fundamental" transition is a different phenomenon, which we call Liouvillian spectral collapse; that is, the emergence of diabolic points of infinite degeneracy. By considering a generalized SLLM with additional dephasing, we witness a second-order phase transition, with a Liouvillian spectral collapse, but in the absence of symmetry breaking. Most surprisingly, the phase transition corresponds to the emergence of dynamical multistability even without SSB. Normally, bistability is suppressed by quantum fluctuations, while in this case, the very presence of quantum fluctuations enables bistability. This rather anomalous bistability, characterizing the truly dissipative and quantum origin of lasing, can be an experimental signature of our predictions, and we show that it is associated with an emergent dynamical hysteresis., Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures, minor typos corrected

Recently, there has been intense research in proposing and developing various methods for constructing high-order exceptional points (EPs) in dissipative systems. These EPs can possess a number of intriguing properties related to, e.g., chiral transport and enhanced sensitivity. Previous proposals to realize non-Hermitian Hamiltonians (NHHs) with high-order EPs have been mainly based on either direct construction of spatial networks of coupled modes or utilization of synthetic dimensions, e.g., of mapping spatial lattices to time or photon-number space. Both methods rely on the construction of effective NHHs describing classical or postselected quantum fields, which neglect the effects of quantum jumps, and which, thus, suffer from a scalability problem in the {\it quantum regime}, when the probability of quantum jumps increases with the number of excitations and dissipation rate. Here, by considering the full quantum dynamics of a quadratic Liouvillian superoperator, we introduce a simple and effective method for engineering NHHs with high-order quantum EPs, derived from evolution matrices of system operators moments. That is, by quantizing higher-order moments of system operators, e.g., of a quadratic two-mode system, the resulting evolution matrices can be interpreted as alternative NHHs describing, e.g., a spatial lattice of coupled resonators, where spatial sites are represented by high-order field moments in the synthetic space of field moments. As an example, we consider a $U(1)$-symmetric quadratic Liouvillian describing a {\it bimodal} cavity with incoherent mode coupling, which can also possess anti-$\cal PT$-symmetry, whose field moment dynamics can be mapped to an NHH governing a spatial {\it network} of coupled resonators with high-order EPs., Comment: 14 pages

We introduce a protocol to transfer excitations between two noninteracting qubits via purely dissipative processes (i.e., in the Lindblad master equation there is no coherent interaction between the qubits). The fundamental ingredients are the presence of collective (i.e. nonlocal) dissipation and unbalanced local dissipation rates (the qubits dissipate at different rates). The resulting quantum trajectories show that the measurement backaction changes the system wave function and induces a passage of the excitation from one qubit to the other. While similar phenomena have been witnessed for a non-Markovian environment, here the dissipative quantum state transfer is induced by an update of the observer knowledge of the wave function in the presence of a Markovian (memoryless) environment -- this is a single quantum trajectory effect. Beyond single quantum trajectories and postselection, such an effect can be observed by histogramming the quantum jumps along several realizations at different times. By investigating the effect of the temperature in the presence of unbalanced local dissipation, we demonstrate that, if appropriately switched on and off, the collective dissipator can act as a Maxwell's demon. These effects are a generalized measure equivalent to the standard projective measure description of quantum teleportation and Maxwell's demon. They can be witnessed in state-of-the-art setups given the extreme experimental control in, e.g., superconducting qubits or Rydberg atoms., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

We predict the emergence of a time crystal generated by an incoherently driven and dissipative nonlinear optical oscillator, where the nonlinearity also comes from dissipation. We show that a second-order dissipative phase transition of light occurs in the frame rotating at the cavity frequency, while a boundary (dissipative) time crystal emerges in the laboratory frame. We relate these two phenomena by using the Liouvillian superoperator associated with the Lindblad master equation and its symmetries. These results connect the emergence of a second-order dissipative phase transition and a dissipative time crystal in the thermodynamic limit, allowing to interpret them as the same phenomenon in terms of the Liouvillian spectrum, but just in different frames., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

Usually, when investigating exceptional points (EPs) of an open Markovian bosonic system, one deals with spectral degeneracies of a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian (NHH), which can correctly describe the system dynamics only in the semiclassical regime. A recently proposed quantum Liouvillian framework enables to completely determine the dynamical properties of such systems and their EPs (referred to as Liouvillian EPs, or LEPs) in the quantum regime by taking into account the effects of quantum jumps, which are ignored in the NHH formalism. Moreover, the symmetry and eigenfrequency spectrum of the NHH become a part of much larger Liouvillian eigenspace. As such, the EPs of an NHH form a subspace of the LEPs. Here we show that once an NHH of a dissipative linear bosonic system exhibits an EP of a certain finite order $n$, it immediately implies that the corresponding LEP can become of any higher order $m\geq n$, defined in the infinite Hilbert space. Most importantly, these higher-order LEPs can be identified by the coherence and spectral functions at the steady state. The coherence functions can offer a convenient tool to probe extreme system sensitivity to external perturbations in the vicinity of higher-order LEPs. As an example, we study a linear bosonic system of a bimodal cavity with incoherent mode coupling to reveal its higher-order LEPs; particularly, of second and third order via first- and second-order coherence functions, respectively. Accordingly, these LEPs can be additionally revealed by squared and cubic Lorentzian spectral lineshapes in the power and intensity-fluctuation spectra. Moreover, we demonstrate that these EPs can also be associated with spontaneous parity-time (${\cal PT}$) and anti-${\cal PT}$-symmetry breaking in the system studied., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures

Exceptional points (EPs) are degeneracies of classical and quantum open systems, which are studied in many areas of physics including optics, optoelectronics, plasmonics, and condensed matter physics. In the semiclassical regime, open systems can be described by phenomenological effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonians (NHHs) capturing the effects of gain and loss in terms of imaginary fields. The EPs that characterize the spectra of such Hamiltonians (HEPs) describe the time evolution of a system without quantum jumps. It is well known that a full quantum treatment describing more generic dynamics must crucially take into account such quantum jumps. In a recent paper [F. Minganti $et$ $al.$, Phys. Rev. A $\mathbf{100}$, $062131$ ($2019$)], we generalized the notion of EPs to the spectra of Liouvillian superoperators governing open system dynamics described by Lindblad master equations. Intriguingly, we found that in situations where a classical-to-quantum correspondence exists, the two types of dynamics can yield different EPs. In a recent experimental work [M. Naghiloo $et$ $al.$, Nat. Phys. $\mathbf{15}$, $1232$ ($2019$)], it was shown that one can engineer a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian in the quantum limit by postselecting on certain quantum jump trajectories. This raises an interesting question concerning the relation between Hamiltonian and Lindbladian EPs, and quantum trajectories. We discuss these connections by introducing a hybrid-Liouvillian superoperator, capable of describing the passage from an NHH (when one postselects only those trajectories without quantum jumps) to a true Liouvillian including quantum jumps (without postselection). We study the all-to-all connected $XYZ$ (anisotropic-Heisenberg) spin model with local and collective dissipations, comparing the results of mean field theory with the solution of the Lindblad quantum evolution. Leveraging the permutational symmetry of the model [N. Shammah et al., Phys Rev. A 98, 063815 (2018)], we find exactly (up to numerical precision) the steady state up to $N=95$ spins. We characterize criticality, studying, as a function of the number of spins $N$, the spin structure factor, the magnetization, the Liouvillian gap and the Von Neumann entropy of the steady state. Exploiting the weak $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry of the model, we efficiently calculate the Liouvillian gap, introducing the idea of an antigap. For small anisotropy, we find a paramagnetic-to-ferromagnetic phase transition in agreement with the mean-field theory. For large anisotropy, instead, we find a significant discrepancy from the scaling of the low-anisotropy ferromagnetic phase. We also study other more experimentally-accessible witnesses of the transition, which can be used for finite-size studies, namely the bimodality coefficient and the angular averaged susceptibility. In contrast to the bimodality coefficient, the angular averaged susceptibility fails to capture the onset of the transition, in striking difference with respect to lower-dimensional studies. We also analyze the competition between local dissipative processes (which disentangle the spin system) and collective dissipative ones (generating entanglement). The nature of the phase transition is almost unaffected by the presence of these terms. Our results mark a stark difference with the common intuition that an all-to-all connected system should fall onto the mean-field solution also for intermediate number of spins., Comment: 22 pages, 11 figures

The Dicke model is a paradigmatic quantum-optical model describing the interaction of a collection of two-level systems with a single bosonic mode. Effective implementations of this model made it possible to observe the emergence of superradiance, i.e., cooperative phenomena arising from the collective nature of light-matter interactions. Via reservoir engineering and analogue quantum simulation techniques, current experimental platforms allow us not only to implement the Dicke model, but also to design more exotic interactions, such as the two-photon Dicke model. In the Hamiltonian case, this model presents an interesting phase diagram characterized by two quantum criticalities: a superradiant phase transition and a spectral collapse, that is, the coalescence of discrete energy levels into a continuous band. Here, we investigate the effects of both qubit and photon dissipation on the phase transition and on the instability induced by the spectral collapse. Using a mean-field decoupling approximation, we analytically obtain the steady-state expectation values of the observables signaling a symmetry breaking, identifying a first-order phase transition from the normal to the superradiant phase. Our stability analysis unveils a very rich phase diagram, which features stable, bistable, and unstable phases depending on dissipation rate.

In the past few decades, many works have been devoted to the study of exceptional points (EPs), i.e., exotic degeneracies of non-Hermitian systems. The usual approach in those studies involves the introduction of a phenomenological effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian (NHH), where the gain and losses are incorporated as the imaginary frequencies of fields and from which the Hamiltonian EPs (HEPs) are derived. Although this approach can provide valid equations of motion for the fields in the classical limit, its application in the derivation of EPs in the quantum regime is questionable. Recently, a framework [Minganti {\it et al.}, \href{https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevA.100.062131}{Phys. Rev. A {\bf 100}, 062131 (2019)}], which allows one to determine quantum EPs from a Liouvillian EP (LEP), rather than from an NHH, has been proposed. Compared to the NHHs, a Liouvillian naturally includes quantum noise effects via quantum-jump terms, thus allowing one to consistently determine its EPs purely in the quantum regime. In this work we study a non-Hermitian system consisting of coupled cavities with unbalanced gain and losses, where the gain is far from saturation, i.e, the system is assumed to be linear. We apply both formalisms, based on an NHH and a Liouvillian within the Scully-Lamb laser theory, to determine and compare the corresponding HEPs and LEPs in the semiclassical and quantum regimes. {Our results indicate that, although the overall spectral properties of the NHH and the corresponding Liouvillian for a given system can differ substantially, their LEPs and HEPs occur for the same combination of system parameters.}, Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures

Exceptional points (EPs) correspond to degeneracies of open systems. These are attracting much interest in optics, optoelectronics, plasmonics, and condensed matter physics. In the classical and semiclassical approaches, Hamiltonian EPs (HEPs) are usually defined as degeneracies of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians such that at least two eigenfrequencies are identical and the corresponding eigenstates coalesce. HEPs result from continuous, mostly slow, nonunitary evolution without quantum jumps. Clearly, quantum jumps should be included in a fully quantum approach to make it equivalent to, e.g., the Lindblad master-equation approach. Thus, we suggest to define EPs via degeneracies of a Liouvillian superoperator (including the full Lindbladian term, LEPs), and we clarify the relations between HEPs and LEPs. We prove two main theorems: Theorem 1 proves that, in the quantum limit, LEPs and HEPs must have essentially different properties. Theorem 2 dictates a condition under which, in the ``semiclassical'' limit, LEPs and HEPs recover the same properties. In particular, we show the validity of Theorem 1 studying systems which have (1) an LEP but no HEPs, and (2) both LEPs and HEPs but for shifted parameters. As for Theorem 2, (3) we show that these two types of EPs become essentially equivalent in the semiclassical limit. We introduce a series of mathematical techniques to unveil analogies and differences between the HEPs and LEPs. We propose an efficient numerical method to compute configuration averages of observables in disordered open quantum systems whose dynamics can be unraveled via stochastic trajectories. We prove that the optimal sampling of trajectories and disorder configurations is simply achieved by considering one random disorder configuration for each individual trajectory. As a first application, we exploit the present method to the study the role of disorder on the physics of the driven-dissipative Bose-Hubbard model in two different regimes: (i) for strong interactions, we explore the dissipative physics of fermionized bosons in disordered one-dimensional chains; (ii) for weak interactions, we investigate the role of on-site inhomogeneities on a first-order dissipative phase transition in a two-dimensional square lattice., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, 99 references, version accepted on PRA

We study an array of coupled optical cavities in presence of two-photon driving and dissipation. The system displays a critical behavior similar to that of a quantum Ising model at finite temperature. Using the corner-space renormalization method, we compute the steady-state properties of finite lattices of varying size, both in one- and two-dimensions. From a finite-size scaling of the average of the photon number parity, we highlight the emergence of a critical point in regimes of small dissipations, belonging to the quantum Ising universality class. For increasing photon loss rates, a departure from this universal behavior signals the onset of a quantum critical regime, where classical fluctuations induced by losses compete with long-range quantum correlations., Comment: Accepted for publication on Physical Review Letters

A state of an open quantum system is described by a density matrix, whose dynamics is governed by a Liouvillian superoperator. Within a general framework, we explore fundamental properties of both first-order dissipative phase transitions and second-order dissipative phase transitions associated with a symmetry breaking. In the critical region, we determine the general form of the steady-state density matrix and of the Liouvillian eigenmatrix whose eigenvalue defines the Liouvillian spectral gap. We study dynamical properties of dissipative XYZ Heisenberg lattices where anisotropic spin-spin coupling competes with local incoherent spin flip processes. In particular, we explore a region of the parameter space where dissipative magnetic phase transitions for the steady state have been recently predicted by mean-field theories and exact numerical methods. We investigate the asymptotic decay rate towards the steady state both in 1D (up to the thermodynamical limit) and in finite-size 2D lattices, showing that critical dynamics does not occur in 1D, but it can emerge in 2D. We also analyze the behavior of individual homodyne quantum trajectories, which well reveal the nature of the transition.

We theoretically explore the dynamical properties of a first-order dissipative phase transition in coherently driven Bose-Hubbard systems, describing, e.g., lattices of coupled nonlinear optical cavities. Via stochastic trajectory calculations based on the truncated Wigner approximation, we investigate the dynamical behavior as a function of system size for 1D and 2D square lattices in the regime where mean-field theory predicts nonlinear bistability. We show that a critical slowing down emerges for increasing number of sites in 2D square lattices, while it is absent in 1D arrays. We investigate two different kinds of quantum trajectories for a nonlinear photon resonator subject to two-photon pumping, a configuration recently studied for the generation of photonic Schroedinger cat states. In the absence of feedback control and in the strong-driving limit, the steady-state density matrix is a statistical mixture of two states with equal weight. While along a single photon-counting trajectory the systems intermittently switches between an odd and an even cat state, we show that upon homodyne detection the situation is different. We present exact results for the steady-state density matrix of a general class of driven-dissipative systems consisting of a nonlinear Kerr resonator in the presence of both coherent (one-photon) and parametric (two-photon) driving and dissipation. Thanks to the analytical solution, obtained via the complex P-representation formalism, we are able to explore any regime, including photon blockade, multiphoton resonant effects, and a mesoscopic regime with large photon density and quantum correlations. We show how the interplay between one- and two-photon driving provides a way to control the multimodality of the Wigner function in regimes where the semiclassical theory exhibits multistability. We study the two-body bound and scattering states of two particles in a one dimensional optical lattice in the presence of a coherent coupling between two internal atomic levels. Due to the interplay between periodic potential, interactions and coherent coupling, the internal structure of the bound states depends on their center of mass momentum. This phenomenon corresponds to an effective momentum-dependent magnetic field for the dimer pseudo-spin, which could be observed in a chirping of the precession frequency during Bloch oscillations. The essence of this effect can be easily interpreted in terms of an effective bound state Hamiltonian.
