This scoping review explores the ethical challenges of using ChatGPT in higher education. By reviewing recent academic articles in English, Chinese, and Japanese, we aimed to provide a deep dive review and identify gaps in the literature. Drawing on Arksey & O'Malley's (2005) scoping review framework, we defined search terms and identified relevant publications from four databases in the three target languages. The research results showed that the majority of the papers were discussion papers, but there was some early empirical work. The ethical issues highlighted in these works mainly concern academic integrity, assessment issues, and data protection. Given the rapid deployment of generative artificial intelligence, it is imperative for educators to conduct more empirical studies to develop sound ethical policies for its use.

Creative writing is a valuable skill that enables learners to become proficient writers. One reason students often struggle with creative writing is their lack of contextual experiences. Spherical video-based virtual reality (SVVR) has been argued to support students' writing through immersive virtual experiences. However, what specific pedagogical practices can be developed and integrated with emerging technologies like SVVR to improve their effectiveness to support elementary school students' creative writing needs further work. This study proposes an innovative approach that integrated the generative learning strategy (GLS) of imagining with SVVR to enhance elementary school students' creative writing performance. To test the effectiveness of the proposed approach, a quasi-experiment was conducted in an elementary school writing class. The experimental group (N = 56) used the generative learning-based SVVR approach (GSVVR), while the control group (N = 55) used the generative learning-based conventional approach (GC). The results showed that the GSVVR group outperformed the GC group in terms of creative writing (F = 10.953, p < 0.01) with a medium effect size. Furthermore, we found a significant impact on students' behavioural and emotional engagement as well as their learning persistence, particularly if they had engagement values below 4.3 before the intervention. These findings indicates that while the approach may have limited benefits for students who are already highly engaged (engagement values exceeding 4.3) with SVVR. It can also notably enhance the performance of relatively less engaged (engagement values below 4.3) students. There was a positive correlation between learning persistence and creative writing in the GSVVR group, with learning persistence being one of the significant predictors of student creative writing performance. The study is concluded with a discussion on the pedagogical and theoretical implications of the findings to support elementary school students' creative writing.

Learners' interaction with lecture materials has remained underexplored despite the growing body of studies on the use of materials. The current study explored the actions EFL learners employed during the use of lecture materials in tertiary classrooms in China through the lens of a transactional view. This empirical study involved forty-two students in two classes as well as two instructors enrolled in the Comprehensive English Course. Qualitative analysis revealed five levels of learner actions during interactions initiated by lectures: awareness, involvement, intervention, creation, and autonomy. The study further highlighted three factors that significantly influence these actions: learners' intrinsic motivation to participate in classroom interactions, discourse space for participation, and the cultural model of learning. Pedagogical implications for enhancing learner autonomy and contributions during lecture materials use were discussed based on results.

Writing is a fundamental skill linked closely with academic achievement, day-to-day communication, formal negotiations, and more. However, due to their lack of contextual experience, learning to write has been a demanding and complex cognitive process for most learners. As a result, learners struggle to exhibit positive learning behaviours and cognitive engagement in writing, let alone embrace deep and autonomous learning. To solve these problems, in the present study, a spherical video-based virtual reality (SVVR) learning environment is developed to provide students with a contextual learning experience. Moreover, a peer feedback strategy is used to guide students in deep learning in writing. A quasi-experimental study was conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach. A total of 79 students from one primary school in southeast China were recruited. The students were assigned to either the experimental group (EG) exposed to the peer-feedback-based SVVR (PF-SVVR) approach or the control group (CG) exposed to the conventional SVVR (C-SVVR) approach. The results show that PF-SVVR had more positive effects than C-SVVR in terms of students' writing performance, cognitive engagement and autonomous learning tendency. In addition, the PF-SVVR approach was found to be more beneficial for triggering deep learning in writing than the C-SVVR approach. This study further found that students in the PF-SVVR group tended to exhibit less disorderly behaviours than those in the C-SVVR group. Our study contributes to the prior literature by exploring the educational potential of the PF approach in the context of SVVR-enabled writing learning.

Abstract We investigated the potential correlation between miR‐223 and NAcHT, LRR, and PYd domain‐containing protein 3 (NLRP3) in the context of renal ischemia‐reperfusion injury (RIRI), which is a leading cause of acute renal failure with significant mortality rates. Additionally, miR‐223 has been implicated in renal inflammation, further highlighting its relevance to this study. C57BL/6 male mice were used as RIRI models. After successful modeling, pathological examinations and serum creatinine and miR‐223 levels were tested. Pro‐inflammatory cytokine (IL‐1β, IL‐6, IL‐8, NLPR3, TLR4) expression was detected in mice by western blot (kidney tissue) and enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay (serum). HK‐2 cells were used for in vitro experiments. A hypoxia/reoxygenation (H/R) model was used, and miR‐223 and pro‐inflammatory cytokine levels were detected using PCR and western blot assays, respectively. A dual‐luciferase reporter assay was conducted to confirm the binding of miR‐223 to NLPR3. Next, NLRP3 was knocked down to determine whether the anti‐inflammatory function of miR‐223 is dependent on NLRP3. MiR‐223 expression was lower in RIRI mice than in the sham operation group. The level of miR‐223 negatively correlated with serum creatinine levels and the severity of tubule injury. Increased proinflammatory cytokine levels in RIRI mice were observed. In vitro, miR‐223 alleviated the inflammatory response in H/R treated cells by inhibiting proinflammatory cytokines. Dual‐luciferase reporter and western blot assays confirmed the binding of miR‐223 to NLRP3. NLRP3 knockdown reversed the anti‐inflammatory effects of miR‐223 in HK‐2 cells. MiR‐223 plays an anti‐inflammatory role in RIRI by targeting NLRP3 to repress pro‐inflammatory factors.

Abstract The construction of large reservoirs has modified the process of water and sediment transport downstream, resulting in changes in the morphology of the river cross-section. Changes in water and sand transport and cross-sectional morphology are reflected in the rating curve at the cross-section. This study analyzed the variations in the rating curve at the Huayuankou (HYK) section and their influencing factors, and conducted water level predictions based on this relationship. The findings revealed that while the annual mean water level has shown a declining tendency over the past 20 years, the annual mean discharge has shown a constant pattern. The rating curve at this stretch narrowed from a rope-loop type curve in its natural condition to a more stable single curve as a result of the construction of the dam upstream of the HYK section. The effect of pre-flood section morphology and the water–sediment process on the scattering degree of the rating curve is inverse; increasing roughness and hydraulic radius decreases scattering degree, while increasing sand content and sand transport rate increases scattering degree. Using the measured data from 2020 as an example, the feasibility of predicting cross-sectional water levels using the rating curve was verified. The prediction results were accurate when the flow was between 1000 and 2800 m3/s; However, when the flow was between 2800 and 4000 m3/s, the forecast results were typically slightly lower than the measured values. Overall, the method demonstrates good predictive accuracy. Insight from the method can be used to predict water levels to better inform decision making about water resources management, and flood emergency response in the lower Yellow River.

Abstract Aim The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the diagnostic performance of serum miR-4534 combined with Transvaginal Color Doppler Ultrasound (TVCDS) in cervical cancer patients. Methods Blood samples from 126 patients with cervical cancer and 83 patients with benign uterine lesions were retrospectively analyzed. Quantitative real time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) was applied to examine the relative abundances of serum miR-4534 in cervical cancer based on a case–control study. Chi-square test was adopted to analyze the association between serum miR-4534 and other clinicopathological factors. The blood flow of cervix was examined using TVCDS, and the blood flow resistance index (RI) of cervix was summarized. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were plotted to explore the diagnostic capacity of serum miR-4534 combined with blood flow RI. Abstract To ensure survival, animals must sometimes suppress fear responses triggered by potential threats during feeding. However, the mechanisms underlying this process remain poorly understood. In the current study, we demonstrated that when fear-conditioned stimuli (CS) were presented during food consumption, a neural projection from lateral hypothalamic (LH) GAD2 neurons to nucleus incertus (NI) relaxin-3 (RLN3)-expressing neurons was activated, leading to a reduction in CS-induced freezing behavior in male mice. LHGAD2 neurons established excitatory connections with the NI. The activity of this neural circuit, including NIRLN3 neurons, attenuated CS-induced freezing responses during food consumption. Additionally, the lateral mammillary nucleus (LM), which received NIRLN3 projections, along with RLN3 signaling in the LM, mediated the decrease in freezing behavior. Collectively, this study identified an LHGAD2-NIRLN3-LM circuit involved in modulating fear responses during feeding, thereby enhancing our understanding of how animals coordinate nutrient intake with threat avoidance.

Abstract Background The burgeoning field of regenerative medicine has significantly advanced with recent findings on biotherapies using human platelet lysates (HPLs), derived from clinical-grade platelet concentrates (PCs), for treating brain disorders. These developments have opened new translational research avenues to explore the neuroprotective effects of platelet-extracellular vesicles (PEVs). Their potential in managing neurodegenerative conditions like traumatic brain injury (TBI) and Parkinson’s disease (PD) warrants further exploration. We aimed here to characterize the composition of a PEV preparation isolated from platelet concentrate (PC) supernatant, and determine its neuroprotective potential and neurorestorative effects in cellular and animal models of TBI and PD. Methods We isolated PEVs from the supernatant of clinical-grade PC collected from healthy blood donors utilizing high-speed centrifugation. PEVs were characterized by biophysical, biochemical, microscopic, and LC–MS/MS proteomics methods to unveil biological functions. Their functionality was assessed in vitro using SH-SY5Y neuronal cells, LUHMES dopaminergic neurons, and BV-2 microglial cells, and in vivo by intranasal administration in a controlled cortical impact (CCI)-TBI model using 8-weeks-old male C57/BL6 mice, and in a PD model induced by MPTP in 5-month-old male C57/BL6 mice. Results PEVs varied in size from 50 to 350 nm, predominantly around 200 nm, with concentrations ranging between 1010 and 1011/mL. They expressed specific platelet membrane markers, exhibited a lipid bilayer by cryo-electron microscopy and, importantly, showed low expression of pro-coagulant phosphatidylserine. LC–MS/MS indicated a rich composition of trophic factors, including neurotrophins, anti-inflammatory agents, neurotransmitters, and antioxidants, unveiling their multifaceted biological functions. PEVs aided in the restoration of neuronal functions in SH-SY5Y cells and demonstrated remarkable neuroprotective capabilities against erastin-induced ferroptosis in dopaminergic neurons. In microglial cells, they promoted anti-inflammatory responses, particularly under inflammatory conditions. In vivo, intranasally delivered PEVs showed strong anti-inflammatory effects in a TBI mouse model and conserved tyrosine hydroxylase expression of dopaminergic neurons of the substantia nigra in a PD model, leading to improved motor function. Conclusions The potential of PEV-based therapies in neuroprotection opens new therapeutic avenues for neurodegenerative disorders. The study advocates for clinical trials to establish the efficacy of PEV-based biotherapies in neuroregenerative medicine. Graphical Abstract

Abstract Cytokinins, which play crucial roles in shoot development, substantially affect grain yield. In rice, the OsRopGEF10-OsRAC3 module is associated with cytokinin signaling and crown root development. However, the effects of RopGEF-mediated cytokinin signaling on rice shoot development and grain yield remain unclear. In this study, we investigated the role of OsRopGEF10 in SAM development and the underlying mechanism. We showed that overexpression of OsRopGEF10 inhibited SAM and panicle development, leading to decreased grain yield. Intriguingly, the overexpression of a specific amino acid mutant of OsRopGEF10, designated gef10-W260S, was found to promote panicle development and grain yield. Further analysis using the BiFC assay revealed that the gef10-W260S mutation disrupted the recruitment of rice histidine phosphotransfer proteins (OsAHP1/2) to the plasma membrane (PM), thereby promoting cytokinin signaling. This effect was corroborated by a dark-induced leaf senescence assay, which revealed an increased cytokinin response in the gef10-W260S ectopic expression lines, whereas the overexpression lines presented a suppressed cytokinin response. Moreover, we revealed that the enhanced panicle development in the gef10-W260S lines was attributable to the upregulated expression of several type-B response regulators (RRs) that are crucial for panicle development. Collectively, these findings revealed the negative regulatory function of OsRopGEF10 in the development of the shoot apical meristem (SAM) via interference with cytokinin signaling. Our study highlights the promising role of OsRopGEF10 as a potential target for regulating SAM and panicle development in rice, revealing a valuable breeding strategy for increasing crop yield.

Achieving diffraction-limited performance in fourth-generation synchrotron radiation sources demands monochromator crystals that can preserve the wavefront across an unprecedented extensive range. There is an urgent need for techniques of absolute crystal diffraction wavefront measurement. At the Beijing Synchrotron Radiation Facility (BSRF), a novel edge scan wavefront metrology technique has been developed. This technique employs a double-edge tracking method, making diffraction-limited level absolute crystal diffraction wavefront measurement a reality. The results demonstrate an equivalent diffraction surface slope error below 70 nrad (corresponding to a wavefront phase error of 4.57% λ) r.m.s. within a nearly 6 mm range for a flat crystal in the crystal surface coordinate. The double-edge structure contributes to exceptional measurement precision for slope error reproducibility, achieving levels below 15 nrad (phase error reproducibility < λ/100) even at a first-generation synchrotron radiation source. Currently, the measurement termed double-edge scan (DES) has already been regarded as a critical feedback mechanism in the fabrication of next-generation crystals.

Background: Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy is widely used to treat bone defects, but the correlation of high oxygen concentration and pressure to osteogenesis is unclear. Methods: Bilateral monocortical tibial defect surgeries were performed on 12-week-old Prrx1-Cre; Rosa26-tdTomato and Prrx1-Cre; Piezo1fl/+ mice. Daily HBO treatment was applied on post-surgery day (PSD) 1–9; and daily mechanical loading on tibia was from PSD 5 to 8. The mice were euthanized on PSD 10, and bone defect repair in their tibias was evaluated using μCT, biomechanical testing, and immunofluorescence deep-tissue imaging. The degree of angiogenesis–osteogenesis coupling was determined through spatial correlation analysis. Bone marrow stromal cells from knockout mice were cultured in vitro, and their osteogenic capacities of the cells were assessed. The activation of genes in the Piezo1–YAP pathway was evaluated using RNA sequencing and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. Results: Lineage tracing showed HBO therapy considerably altered the number of Prrx1+ cells and their progeny in a healing bone defect. Using conditional knockdown mice, we found that HBO stimulation activates the Piezo1–YAP axis in Prrx1+ cells and promotes osteogenesis–angiogenesis coupling during bone repair. The beneficial effect of HBO was similar to that of anabolic mechanical stimulation, which also acts through the Piezo1–YAP axis. Subsequent transcriptome sequencing results revealed that similar mechanosensitive pathways are activated by HBO therapy in a bone defect. Conclusion: HBO therapy promotes bone tissue regeneration through the mechanosensitive Piezo1–YAP pathway in a population of Prrx1+ osteogenic progenitors. Our results contribute to the understanding of the mechanism by which HBO therapy treats bone defects. The Translational Potential of this Article: Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is widely used in clinical settings. Our results show that osteogenesis was induced by the activation of the Piezo1–YAP pathway in osteoprogenitors after HBO stimulation, and the underlying mechanism was elucidated. These results may help improve current HBO methods and lead to the formulation of alternative treatments that achieve the same functional outcomes.

Nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) and sulfidation-modified nZVI (S-nZVI) were synthesized and used to remove hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) in wastewater. Characterization of the products showed that the sulfidation process significantly changed the morphology of nZVI, with enhanced crystallinity. The effects of S/Fe ratio, pH value, and reaction temperature on Cr(VI) removal were studied. A S/Fe ratio of 0.5 was the most appropriate parameter, with a removal efficiency of 98% in the condition of pH = 2. The effects of anions (Cl−, NO3−, CO32−, and SO42−) and cations (Ca2+ and Mg2+) on the Cr(VI) removal efficiency were investigated, and the relevant mechanisms were discussed. The Cr(VI) removal efficiency of S-nZVI was significantly greater than that of nZVI, mainly owing to the existence of FeS layers that could protect Fe0 cores and prompt electron transfer. The aging and cycling experiments showed that S-nZVI could maintain its reactivity when facing the corrosion of water, and showed cycling stability. Thus, S-nZVI is an effective and feasible agent for the remediation of Cr(VI)-contained wastewater.

This paper explored students’ experiences in an international virtual student mobility (VSM) program at a Japanese national university implemented in collaboration with partner universities in the Asia Pacific region and Europe. Through students’ narratives, the study discerned how students perceive “mobility” and the concept of “international students” after participating in a virtual student mobility program. Findings revealed a tension between students’ understanding of “mobility,” official narratives, and students’ actual experiences. While VSM programs facilitate communication and knowledge exchange across borders and develop cross-cultural communications, prevailing binary definitions in student mobility, such as “inbound” vs. “outbound,” “domestic” vs. “international,” or “study abroad” vs. “internationalization at home,” limit VSM potential to be fully realized. This misalignment of the traditional understanding of student mobility that emphasizes place and borders challenges the official narrative of student mobility and urges educators to re-align and re-frame how we understand “international students.”

In this work, molten salt method was used to prepare highly dispersed graphitic carbon nitride(WSGCN), and chemical reduction method was used to load Cu nanoparticles on WSGCN to prepare Cu-WSGCN composites. FTIR, XRD, XPS, TEM, SEM, ICP-AES, UV-vis DRS, PL spectroscopy, ESR and EIS characterization methods were carried out to investigate the structure and photoelectric properties of the photocatalyst. The results show that compared with WSGCN, Cu-WSGCN has a larger light absorption range and a narrower band gap. In addition, the presence of Schottky barriers at the interface between Cu nanoparticles and WSGCN promotes charge transfer and separation of photogenerated carriers, which improves the photocatalytic ability. The uranium removal rate of Cu-WSGCN composite is relatively high(81.07 %) when the load of Cu nanoparticles is 1%. After three cycles of photocatalytic uranium reduction experiments, the uranium removal rate by 1%Cu-WSGCN can still reach 75.96%, which provides a useful reference for the development of novel materials with high efficiency photocatalytic removal of uranium.

Abstract Song Dynasty tilestones are one type of ancient Chinese building materials. Studying their mechanical properties is of great significance for the design and development of restoration materials. It is a challenge to sample and perform traditional tests (ϕ50mm × 100mm) for the tilestone cultural relics. In this work, a combination of nanoindentation techniques and the homogenization calculation method based on the Mori–Tanaka model were used to determine the mechanical parameters of Song Dynasty tilestones. The study process involved several steps: (1) Using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy to examine the surface morphology and mineral composition of the tilestones. (2) Determining the mechanical parameters (i.e., the elastic modulus, hardness and fracture toughness) through nanoindentation tests. (3) Upgrading mechanical parameters from micro to meso-scale using the Mori–Tanaka model and comparing these with uniaxial compression test results. The result shows that the red tilestones and green tilestone are mainly composed of quartz, feldspar and mica. The average elastic modulus of the red tilestones and the green tilestones are 29.47 GPa and 30.21 GPa, respectively. Compared with the parameter result obtained by upscaling, the deviation rates of the red tilestones and green tilestones are 10.3% and 9.6%, respectively, which proves that the test method is reliable. The nanoindentation test and homogenization approach in this work provide the robust theoretical and practical basis for evaluating the mechanical strength of Song Dynasty tilestones.

Abstract Background Thermostability is a fundamental property of proteins to maintain their biological functions. Predicting protein stability changes upon mutation is important for our understanding protein structure–function relationship, and is also of great interest in protein engineering and pharmaceutical design. Results Here we present mutDDG-SSM, a deep learning-based framework that uses the geometric representations encoded in protein structure to predict the mutation-induced protein stability changes. mutDDG-SSM consists of two parts: a graph attention network-based protein structural feature extractor that is trained with a self-supervised learning scheme using large-scale high-resolution protein structures, and an eXtreme Gradient Boosting model-based stability change predictor with an advantage of alleviating overfitting problem. The performance of mutDDG-SSM was tested on several widely-used independent datasets. Then, myoglobin and p53 were used as case studies to illustrate the effectiveness of the model in predicting protein stability changes upon mutations. Our results show that mutDDG-SSM achieved high performance in estimating the effects of mutations on protein stability. In addition, mutDDG-SSM exhibited good unbiasedness, where the prediction accuracy on the inverse mutations is as well as that on the direct mutations. Conclusion Meaningful features can be extracted from our pre-trained model to build downstream tasks and our model may serve as a valuable tool for protein engineering and drug design.

Abstract Type I CRISPR-Cas systems are widespread and have exhibited high versatility and efficiency in genome editing and gene regulation in prokaryotes. However, due to the multi-subunit composition and large size, their application in eukaryotes has not been thoroughly investigated. Here, we demonstrate that the type I-F2 Cascade, the most compact among type I systems, with a total gene size smaller than that of SpCas9, can be developed for transcriptional activation in human cells. The efficiency of the engineered I-F2 tool can match or surpass that of dCas9. Additionally, we create a base editor using the I-F2 Cascade, which induces a considerably wide editing window (~30 nt) with a bimodal distribution. It can expand targetable sites, which is useful for disrupting functional sequences and genetic screening. This research underscores the application of compact type I systems in eukaryotes, particularly in the development of a base editor with a wide editing window.

Abstract This study aims to develop a super-resolution (SR) algorithm tailored specifically for enhancing the image quality and resolution of early cervical cancer (CC) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images. The proposed method is subjected to both qualitative and quantitative analyses, thoroughly investigating its performance across various upscaling factors and assessing its impact on medical image segmentation tasks. The innovative SR algorithm employed for reconstructing early CC MRI images integrates complex architectures and deep convolutional kernels. Training is conducted on matched pairs of input images through a multi-input model. The research findings highlight the significant advantages of the proposed SR method on two distinct datasets at different upscaling factors. Specifically, at a 2× upscaling factor, the sagittal test set outperforms the state-of-the-art methods in the PSNR index evaluation, second only to the hybrid attention transformer, while the axial test set outperforms the state-of-the-art methods in both PSNR and SSIM index evaluation. At a 4× upscaling factor, both the sagittal test set and the axial test set achieve the best results in the evaluation of PNSR and SSIM indicators. This method not only effectively enhances image quality, but also exhibits superior performance in medical segmentation tasks, thereby providing a more reliable foundation for clinical diagnosis and image analysis.

Abstract Background Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, characterized by high rates of angiogenesis and immune evasion. Paraspeckle genes, involved in gene regulation and RNA metabolism, have recently been linked to tumor progression. This study aims to elucidate the relationship between paraspeckle genes and HCC prognosis, focusing on SFPQ, DDX39B, and UBAP2. Methods We analyzed HCC (LIHC) and prostate cancer (PRAD) samples from the TCGA database to explore the correlation between paraspeckle genes and angiogenesis. We conducted unsupervised clustering, risk scoring, and survival analysis to identify distinct patient groups and their clinical outcomes. Gene expression data were used to perform differential analysis and Gene Ontology (GO) enrichment. Results Our analysis identified significant correlations between paraspeckle genes and angiogenesis across multiple cancer types. Elevated expression levels of SFPQ, DDX39B, and UBAP2 were associated with poor prognosis in HCC patients, and all of them has statistical significance. Unsupervised clustering of HCC samples based on paraspeckle gene expression revealed two distinct clusters, with high-risk patients exhibiting stronger immune suppression and tumor immune evasion. GO enrichment highlighted critical pathways related to angiogenesis and immune regulation. Additionally, a risk scoring model based on these genes effectively distinguished high-risk and low-risk patient groups, providing valuable prognostic insights. Conclusion This study demonstrates that SFPQ, DDX39B, and UBAP2 are significantly associated with poor prognosis in HCC, likely due to their roles in promoting angiogenesis and immune suppression. These findings highlight the potential of paraspeckle genes as prognostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets, offering new avenues for personalized treatment strategies in HCC. Further research into their functional mechanisms and clinical applicability is crucial for advancing HCC treatment and improving patient outcomes.

Abstract Industrial CO2 electrolysis via electrochemical CO2 reduction has achieved progress in alkaline solutions, while the same reaction in acidic solution remains challenging because of severe hydrogen evolution side reactions, acid corrosion, and low target product selectivity. Herein, an industrial acidic CO2 electrolysis to pure HCOOH system is realized in a proton-exchange-membrane electrolyzer using an acid-tolerant Bi-based metal-organic framework guided by a Pourbaix diagram. Significantly, the Faradaic efficiency of HCOOH synthesis reaches 95.10% at a large current density of 400 mA/cm2 with a high CO2 single-pass conversion efficiency of 64.91%. Moreover, the proton-exchange-membrane device also achieves an industrial-level current density of 250 mA/cm2 under a relatively low voltage of 3.5 V for up to 100 h with a Faradaic efficiency of 93.5% for HCOOH production, which corresponds to an energy consumption of 200.65 kWh/kmol, production rate of 12.1 mmol/m2/s, and an energy conversion efficiency of 38.2%. These results will greatly aid the contemporary research moving toward commercial implementation and success of CO2 electrolysis technology.

Abstract Ultra-precision machining requires system modelling that both satisfies explainability and conforms to data fidelity. Existing modelling approaches, whether based on data-driven methods in present artificial intelligence (AI) or on first-principle knowledge, fall short of these qualities in high-demanding industrial applications. Therefore, this paper develops an explainable and generalizable ‘grey-box’ AI informatics method for real-world dynamic system modelling. Such a grey-box model serves as a multiscale ‘world model’ by integrating the first principles of the system in a white-box architecture with data-fitting black boxes for varying hyperparameters of the white box. The physical principles serve as an explainable global meta-structure of the real-world system driven by physical knowledge, while the black boxes enhance local fitting accuracy driven by training data. The grey-box model thus encapsulates implicit variables and relationships that a standalone white-box model or black-box model fails to capture. Case study on an industrial cleanroom high-precision temperature regulation system verifies that the grey-box method outperforms existing modelling methods and is suitable for varying operating conditions.

Abstract Background This study aims to evaluate the association of metabolic syndrome (MetS) with the risk of all-cause mortality in elderly patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Methods Elderly ARDS patients (≥ 65 years) enrolled from our hospital between January 2018 and July 2023 were divided into the MetS group or the non-MetS group. The outcomes were 28-day and 90-day all-cause mortality rates in the total population and two subgroups stratified by age (65–75 years and ≥ 75 years). Multivariate Cox regression was employed to assess the association of MetS with all-cause mortality, after controlling for potential cofounding factors. Abstract Quantum networks comprised of entangled end nodes serve stronger than the classical correlation for unparalleled quantum internet applications. However, practical quantum networking is affected by noise, which at its worst, causes end nodes to be described by pre-existing classical data. In such untrusted networks, determining quantum network fidelity and genuine multi-node entanglement becomes crucial. Here, we show that determining quantum network fidelity and genuine N-node entanglement in an untrusted star network requires only N + 1 measurement settings. This method establishes a semi-trusted framework, allowing some nodes to relax their assumptions. Our network determination method is enabled by detecting genuine N-node Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen steerability. Experimentally, using spontaneous parametric down-conversion entanglement sources, we demonstrate the determinations of genuine 3-photon and 4-photon quantum networks and the false positives of the widely used entanglement witness, the fidelity criterion of 1/2. Our results provide a scalable method for the determination of multipartite entanglement in realistic quantum networks.

Abstract Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is characterized by a high incidence rate and poor prognosis worldwide. A deeper insight into the pathogenesis of NSCLC and identification of novel therapeutic targets are essential to improve the prognosis of NSCLC. In this study, we revealed that fibrinogen-like protein 1 (FGL1) promotes proliferation, migration, and invasion of NSCLC cells. Mechanistically, we found that Stat3 acts as a transcription factor and can be recruited to the FGL1 promoter, enhancing FGL1 promoter activity. Lysine-specific demethylase 4A (KDM4A) interacts with Stat3 and facilitates the removal of methyl groups from H3K9me3, thereby enhancing Stat3-mediated transcription of FGL1. Furthermore, we observed that Stat3 and KDM4A promote NSCLC cell proliferation, migration, and invasion partly by upregulating FGL1 expression. Additionally, the expression of FGL1 was significantly higher in cancer tissues (n = 90) than in adjacent non-cancerous tissues (n = 90). Furthermore, patients with high FGL1 expression had a shorter overall survival (OS) compared to those with low FGL1 expression. We measured the expression levels of FGL1 on circulating tumor cells (CTCs) in 65 patients and found that patients with a dynamic decrease in FGL1 expression on CTCs exhibited a better therapeutic response. These findings suggest that the dynamic changes in FGL1 expression can serve as a potential biomarker for predicting treatment efficacy in NSCLC. Overall, this study revealed the significant role and regulatory mechanisms of FGL1 in the development of NSCLC, suggesting its potential as a therapeutic target for patients with NSCLC. Future studies should provide more personalized and effective treatment options for patients with NSCLC to improve clinical outcomes.

Abstract For the polarization multiplexing requirements in all-optical networks, this work presents a compact all-fiber polarization beam splitter (PBS) based on dual-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) and an elliptical gold layer. Numerical analysis using the finite element method (FEM) demonstrates that the mode modulation effect of the central gold layer effectively reduces the dimensions of the proposed PBS. By determining reasonable structural parameters of the proposed PCF, the coupling length ratio (CLR) between X- and Y-polarized super-modes can approach 2, achieving a minimal device length of 0.122 mm. The PBS exhibits a maximum extinction ratio (ER) of − 65 dB at 1.55 μm, with an operating bandwidth spanning 100 nm (1.5–1.6 μm) and a stable insertion loss (IL) of ~ 1.5 dB at 1.55 μm. Furthermore, the manufacture feasibility and performance verification scheme are also investigated. It is widely anticipated that the designed PBS will play a crucial role in the ongoing development process of miniaturization and integration of photonic devices.

Abstract Patients with end stage renal disease (ESRD) are at high risk of developing upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC). Due to high recurrence rate of UTUC in contralateral kidney and ureter, and high risk of complications related to surgery and anesthesia, whether it’s necessary to remove both kineys and ureters at one time remains in debate. We utilized Taiwanese UTUC Registry Database to valuate the difference of oncological outcomes and perioperative complications between patients with ESRD with unilateral and bilateral UTUC receiving surgical resection. Patients with ESRD and UTUC were divided into three groups, unilateral UTUC, previous history of unilateral UTUC with metachronous contralateral UTUC, and concurrent bilatetral UTUC. Oncological outcomes, perioperative complications, and length of hospital stays were investiaged. We found that there is no diffence of oncological outcomes including overall survival, cancer specific survival, disease free survival and bladder recurrence free survival between these three groups. Complication rate and length of hospital stay are similar. Adverse oncological features such as advanced tumor stage, lymph node involvement, lymphovascular invasion, and positive surgical margin would negatively affect oncological outcomes.

A novel insertion device is introduced, designated as the Mango wiggler, designed for synchrotron radiation (SR) imaging that provides a large field of view. This innovative device is constructed from two orthogonal planar wigglers with a small difference in their period lengths, eliciting the phase difference of the magnetic fields to incrementally transitions from 0 to π/2. Such a configuration enlarges the vertical divergence of the light source, as with the horizontal divergence. The appellation `Mango wiggler' derives from the distinctive mango-shaped contour of its radiation field. A comprehensive suite of theoretical analyses and simulations has been executed to elucidate the radiation properties of the Mango wiggler, employing SPECTRA and Mathematica as calculation tools. In conjunction with the ongoing construction of the High Energy Photon Source in Beijing a practical Mango wiggler device has been fabricated for utilization in SR imaging applications. Theoretical analyses were applied to this particular Mango wiggler to yield several theoretical conclusions, and several simulations were performed according to the measured magnetic field results.

To elucidate the development patterns and influencing factors of natural fractures in deep-buried tight oil reservoirs, a comprehensive evaluation was conducted using a large amount of core samples, thin section, physical property data, imaging and conventional logging, water injection pressure testing and other data. The focus was on the tight oil reservoirs within the Ⅱ-Ⅵ oil layers of the third member of the Paleogene Hetaoyuan Formation in the southeastern An'peng area of the Biyang Depression, Nanxiang Basin. These oil formations, deposited in fan-delta front environment, are characterized by a high content of rock debris, indicating proximal deposition. A strong positive correlation between reservoir porosity and permeability was observed. Among the various sandstone lithologies, fractures predominantly developed in fine sandstone, followed by siltstone, while gravelly sandstone generally lacked fractures. High-angle and vertical fractures were predominant, constituting 87.8% of the total, while low-angle oblique and horizontal fractures accounted for 7.3% and 4.9%, respectively. The main controlling factors for fracture development in these tight reservoirs included lithology, depositional microfacies, and local structures. Thin and fine-grained single or composite sand bodies typically had more deve-loped fractures, particularly in front channel, channel flank, mouth bar, and outer edge of distal bars. Conversely, fractures were less developed in sheet sands or delta front microfacies. Moreover, fractures primarily formed at structural inflection points, predominantly at the tops and wings of forward structures and were primarily oriented along the WE and NE directions, followed by the NW direction. These fractures predominantly formed during the Neogene depression period (late Himalayan). Fractures significantly influence water channeling in tight oil reservoirs, necessitating enhanced dynamic and static monitoring of the degree, extent, and orientation of fracture development.

Abstract Background Colorectal cancer (CRC) ranks as the third most common malignancies in the world, and periodic examination of the patient is advantageous in reducing the mortality of CRC. The first blood-based Septin9 gene methylation assay which recognized by the US FDA for CRC examination was Epi proColon. However, this assay was not broadly applied in the current clinical guideline because of its relatively lower sensitivity in the detection of early-stage CRC. Methods This study aimed at developing a new multiplex Septin9 methylation assay (ColonUSK) which simultaneously evaluates two CpG-rich subregions in the promoter of the Septin9 gene and an internal control in a single reaction. ColonUSK proved increased sensitivity, with a detection limit as low as 12pg of the positive DNA compared with the Septin9 assay targeting one CpG-rich subregion. 1366 subjects were prospectively recruited from four comprehensive hospitals in China in an opportunistic screening study for assessing its value in CRC detection. Blind testing was developed to evaluate ColonUSK in comparison with clinical examination using clinical gold standard such as colonoscopy. Results The assay demonstrates clinical sensitivity for diagnosing colorectal cancer (CRC) and advanced adenoma at rates of 77.34% and 25.26%, respectively. Furthermore, ColonUSK exhibits a high degree of specificity for non-CRC cases (95.95%) clinically. Significantly, the detection rate of cases in high-grade intraepithelial neoplasia increased to 54.29%. The value for the assay in the Kappa test was 0.76, showing a high degree of consistency between ColonUSK and clinical gold standard. Conclusions ColonUSK indicated moderate diagnostic value and could become a non-invasive detection way for CRC. The implementation of the ColonUSK assay has the capacity to markedly enhance CRC screening practices.

Abstract Background In China, the national cervical cancer screening protocol involves initial testing for high-risk human papillomavirus (hrHPV), followed by cytology for hrHPV-positive cases. This study evaluates the effectiveness of PAX1 methylation (PAX1 m ) analysis in identifying precancerous or cancerous lesions in cervical samples from Chinese women positive for non-16/18 hrHPV strains. Methods Between February 2022 and March 2023, 281 cervical samples from non-16/18 hrHPV-positive women underwent cytological examination and PAX1 m analysis. The study assessed the statistical relationship between PAX1 m levels and the presence of cervical lesions, comparing the diagnostic performance of PAX1 m to conventional cytology. Results A significant association was found between PAX1 methylation levels and the risk of CIN2 + and CIN3 + lesions, with 47 instances of CIN2 + detected. Odds ratios (ORs) for moderate and high PAX1 m levels were 8.86 (95% CI: 2.24–42.17) and 166.32 (95% CI: 47.09-784.97), respectively. The area under the ROC curve for PAX1 m in identifying CIN2 + lesions was 0.948 (95% CI: 0.895–0.99). PAX1 m demonstrated similar sensitivity and negative predictive value (NPV) to cytology but reduced the colposcopy referral rate from 47.7% with cytology alone to 25.6% with PAX1 m , showing superior specificity and positive predictive value across age groups. Conclusions PAX1 methylation is a strong indicator of CIN2 + and CIN3 + risk, offering diagnostic performance comparable to cytology with the added benefit of reduced unnecessary colposcopy referrals. These findings support the use of PAX1 m analysis as a reliable tool for triaging non-16/18 hrHPV-positive women in outpatient settings.

Abstract Purpose This study aimed to investigate clinical diagnostic values of mSEPT9 combined with NLR, PLR and LMR in CRC. Methods 329 subjects composed of 120 CRC patients, 105 polyps patients and 104 healthy participants were prospectively recruited. Clinicopathologic features were collected and analyzed. Plasma samples were collected for mSEPT9, NLR, PLR and LMR test. The sensitivity, specificity and AUC of each biomarker separately or in combination were estimated by the ROC curve. Results The levels of NLR, PLR and the PDR of mSEPT9 in CRC patients were significantly higher than those in non-CRC subjects, while LMR was the opposite. The PDR of mSEPT9 in CRC patients was significantly correlated with age, tumor size, tumor stage and M stage. ROC curve analysis demonstrated moderate diagnostic values of mSEPT9, NLR, PLR and LMR in CRC patients with AUC of 0.78 (Se = 0.68, and Sp = 0.89), 0.78 (Se = 0.68, and Sp = 0.83), 0.80 (Se = 0.68, and Sp = 0.81), and 0.77 (Se = 0.72, and Sp = 0.73), respectively. Moreover, combination of these four biomarkers dramatically enhanced the diagnostic accuracy of CRC (AUC = 0.92, Se = 0.90, and Sp = 0.87), especially for CRC patients with large tumors (AUC = 0.95) or distal metastasis (AUC = 0.95). Conclusion mSEPT9, NLR, PLR and LMR showed the potential to be reliable biomarkers for the diagnosis of CRC. And the combined application of these biomarkers further improved the diagnostic accuracy of CRC significantly.

Abstract Background Studies have shown that plant endophytic microbial communities are ubiquitous and closely related to plant growth and health. To clarify the mechanism of the melon varieties with high resistant to wilt, the endophytic microbial compositions and metabolites in roots of melon varieties with high resistant ability to wilt were analyzed. Results The results showed that the abundances of Firmicutes, Ascomycota, Bacillus, Bradyrhizobium, Amycolatopsis, Actinospica, and Catenulispora all increased in roots of wilt high resistant melon varieties (MT) which compared to wilt susceptible melon varieties (MS). Meanwhile, Ochrobactrum, Bordetella, Roseateles, Staphylococcus, Acidovorax, Amycolatopsis, Catenulispora, Promicromonospora, and Gymnopilus were the unique endophytic microbes in roots of MT. Moreover, in comparison with the MS varieties, the functions of Defense mechanisms, Secondary metabolites biosynthesis, transport and catabolism, Nucleotide transport and metabolism, Signal transduction mechanisms, Coenzyme transport and metabolism, Carbohydrate transport and metabolism and Amino acid transport and metabolism all increased in roots of MT varieties. Additionally, the nucleotide metabolism and biosynthesis of cofactors metabolic pathways were also significantly increased in roots of MT varieties. On the other hand, the untargeted metabolome results showed that Biosynthesis of various plant secondary metabolites, Nucleotide metabolism and Biosynthesis of cofactors metabolic pathways were significantly increased in the expression of MT varieties; and the content of metabolic compounds such as flavonoids, Cinnamic acid compounds, Organic acid compounds, and Nucleotides were increased. In addition, the correlation between microbiome and metabolome indicates a significant correlation between the two. Conclusions All above results suggested that higher abundant antagonistic microbes and metabolic functions of endophytes in roots of wilt high resistant melon varieties (MT) were the important mechanisms for their high resistance to wilt. Abstract Background Heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) is associated with a high rate of mortality and morbidity. Evidence has shown that sex differences may be an important contributor to phenotypic heterogeneity in patients with HFrEF. Although diabetes mellitus (DM) frequently coexists with HFrEF and results in a worse prognosis, there remains a need to identify sex-related differences in the characteristics and outcomes of this population. In this study, we aimed to investigate the between-sex differences in clinical profile, left ventricular (LV) remodeling, and cardiovascular risk factors and outcomes in patients with HFrEF concomitant with DM. Methods A total of 273 patients with HFrEF concomitant with DM who underwent cardiac MRI were included in this study. Clinical characteristics, LV remodeling as assessed by cardiac MRI, and cardiovascular risk factors and outcomes were compared between sexes. Results Women were older, leaner and prone to have anemia and hypoproteinemia but less likely to have ischemic etiology. Cardiac MRI revealed that despite similar LVEFs between the sexes, there was more LV concentric remodeling, less impaired global systolic peak strain in longitudinal and circumferential components and a decreased likelihood of late gadolinium enhancement presence in women than in men. During a median follow-up time of 34.6 months, women exhibited better overall survival than men did (log-rank P = 0.042). Multivariable Cox proportional hazards analysis indicated different risk factors for predicting outcomes between sexes, with hypertension [hazard ratio (HR) = 2.05, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.05 to 4.85, P = 0.041] and hypoproteinemia (HR = 2.27, 95% CI 1.06 to 4.37, P = 0.039) serving as independent determinants of outcomes in women, whereas ischemic etiology (HR = 1.96, 95% CI 1.11 to 3.48, P = 0.021) and atrial fibrillation (HR = 1.86, 95% CI 1.02 to 3.41, P = 0.044) served as independent determinants of outcomes in men. Conclusions Among patients with HFrEF concomitant with DM, women displayed different LV remodeling and risk factors and had better survival than men did. Sex-based phenotypic heterogeneity in patients with HFrEF in the context of DM should be addressed in clinical practice.

In the semiconductor industry, where miniaturization is a key driver, mechanical properties of ultra-thin dies are increasingly important research topics. Sub-surface damage (SSD) is a common issue in wafer thinning processes, but there is a lack of research on the relationship between SSD microstructure and ultra-thin die strength. In this study, the influence of SSD microstructure on flexural strength was investigated through three-point bending tests of ultra-thin dies prepared by distinct wafer-thinning methods, coupled with SSD microstructure characterization. Flexural strength was highest for dies dry polished with N pad, intermediate for dies dry polished with M pad, and lowest for dies with fine grinding. We researched SSD microstructure by high-resolution transmitted electron microscope (HRTEM), revealing that it comprises amorphous regions, micro-cracks, and high-density distortion areas. The SSD of the fine grinding samples was thick and intermittent, with observable micro-cracks. Comparatively, the SSD structure from M pad polishing was uniform but thicker, whereas SSD from N pad polishing was thinner but exhibited greater variability. SSD thickness not only influences the average value but also dictates the distribution of flexural strength. This research enhances the understanding of SSD microstructure's impact on ultra-thin die flexural strength, providing valuable insights for optimizing wafer thinning processes to enhance die reliability.

Abstract We investigate the effect of gluon Bose enhancement in the nuclear wave function on the dijet production in incoherent diffractive processes in DIS and ultraperipheral collisions. We demonstrate that Bose enhancement leads to an enhancement of diffractive dijet production cross section when the transverse momenta of the two jets are aligned at zero relative angle. This enhancement is maximal when the magnitude of the transverse momenta of the two jets are equal, and disappears rather quickly as a function of the ratio of the two momenta. We study both the dilute limit and fully nonlinear dense regime where the nuclear wave function is evolved with the leading order JIMWLK equation. In both cases we observe a visible effect, with it being enhanced by the evolution due to the dynamical generation of the color neutralization scale.

Abstract Studies investigating the relationship between dietary vitamin B1 intake and risk of Hyperuricemia (HU) are scarce, the present study aimed to examine the association of dietary vitamin B1 intake and HU among adults. This cross-sectional study included 5750 adults whose data derived from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from March 2017 to March 2020. The dietary intake of vitamin B1 was assessed using 24-h dietary recall interviews. The characteristics of study participants were grouped into five levels according to the levels of vitamin B1 quintile. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to estimate the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of HU, according to the vitamin B1 intake quintile for male and female separately. The dose–response relationship was determined by the restricted cubic spline (RCS). Smoothed curve fitting was used to assess serum uric acid concentration versus dietary vitamin B1 intake in the study population. The prevalence of hyperuricemia was 18.90% (20.15% and 17.79% for males and females, respectively) in the United States from March 2017 to March 2020. Multiple logistic regression analyses showed that in the male population, the HU ratio (OR) of vitamin B1 intake in Q2 to Q5 compared with the lowest quintile (Q1) was 0.75 (95% CI 0.52, 1.09), 0.70 (95% CI 0.48, 1.02), 0.66 (95% CI 0.44, 0.99) and 0.55 (95% CI 0.34, 0.90). The P for trend was 0.028. In women, the ORs for vitamin B1 intake Q2 to Q5 were 0.87 (95% CI 0.64, 1.19), 0.97 (0.68–1.38), 1.05 (0.69–1.60) and 0.75 (0.42–1.34), respectively. The P for trend was 0.876. The RCS curve revealed a linear relationship between vitamin B1 intake and the risk of hyperuricemia in men (P nonlinear = 0.401). Smoothed curve fitting demonstrated a negative association between vitamin B1 intake and serum uric acid concentration in men, whereas there was no significant association between dietary vitamin B1 intake and the risk of hyperuricemia in women. In the US adult population, dietary vitamin B1 intake was negatively associated with hyperuricemia in males.

Abstract Background Rabies is a fatal zoonotic disease whose pathogenesis has not been fully elucidated, and vaccination is the only effective method for protecting against rabies virus infection. Most inactivated vaccines are produced using Vero cells, which are African green monkey kidney cells, to achieve large-scale production. However, there is a potential carcinogenic risk due to nonhuman DNA contamination. Thus, replacing Vero cells with human diploid cells may be a safer strategy. In this study, we developed a novel 2BS cell-adapted rabies virus strain and analysed its sequence, virulence and immunogenicity to determine its application potential as a human diploid cell inactivated vaccine. Methods and results The 2BS cell-adapted rabies virus strain 2aG4-B40 was established by passage for 40 generations and selection of plaques in 2BS cells. RNA sequence analysis revealed that mutations in 2BS cell-adapted strains were not located at key sites that regulate the production of neutralizing antibodies or virulence in the aG strain (GQ412744.1). The gradual increase in virulence (remaining above 7.0 logLD50/ml from the 40th to 55th generation) and antigen further indicated that these mutations may increase the affinity of the adapted strains for human diploid cells. Identification tests revealed that the 2BS cell-adapted virus strain was neutralized by anti-rabies serum, with a neutralization index of 19,952. PrEP and PEP vaccination and the NIH test further indicated that the vaccine prepared with the 2aG4-B40 strain had high neutralizing antibody levels (2.24 to 46.67 IU/ml), immunogenicity (protection index 270) and potency (average 11.6 IU/ml). Conclusions In this study, a 2BS cell-adapted strain of the 2aG4 rabies virus was obtained by passage for 40 generations. The results of sequencing analysis and titre determination of the adapted strain showed that the mutations in the adaptive process are not located at key sequence regions of the virus, and these mutations may enhance the affinity of the adapted strain for human diploid cells. Moreover, vaccines made from the adapted strain 2aG4-B40 had high potency and immunogenicity and could be an ideal candidate rabies virus strain for inactivated vaccine preparation.

Variations in molecular evolutionary rate have been widely investigated among lineages and genes. However, it remains an open question whether fast rate of molecular evolution is driven by natural selection or random drift, and how the fast rate is linked to metabolic rate. Additionally, previous studies on fast molecular evolution have been largely restricted to concatenated matrix of genes or a few specifically selected genes, but less is known for individual genes at the genome-wide level. Here we addressed these questions using more than 5000 single-copy orthologous (SCO) genes through comparative genomic and phylogenetic analyses among fishes, with a special focus on a newly-sequenced clupeocephalan fish the Chinese hook snout carp Opsariichthys bidens. We showed O. bidens displays significantly higher mean substitution rate and more fast-evolving SCO genes (2172 genes) than most fishes studied here. The rapidly evolving genes are enriched in highly conserved and very basic functions such as translation and ribosome that are critical for biological fitness. We further revealed that ∼25 % of these fast-evolving genes exhibit a constant increase of substitution rate from the common ancestor down to the present, suggesting a neglected but important contribution from ancestral states. Model fitting showed that ∼85 % of fast-evolving genes exclusive to O. bidens and related species follow the adaptive evolutionary model rather than random-drift model, and 7.6 % of fast-evolving genes identified in O. bidens have experienced positive selection, both indicating the reflection of adaptive selection. Finally, metabolic rate was observed to be linked with substitution rate in a gene-specific manner. Overall, our findings reveal fast molecular evolution of SCO genes at genome-wide level in O. bidens, and uncover the evolutionary and ecological contributors to it.

Frozen shoulder (FS) manifests as progressively worsening pain and a reduction in shoulder range of motion (ROM). Salvianolic acid B (SaB) is recently expected to be used in the treatment of fibrosis diseases including FS. We firstly demonstrate that SaB can effectively hinder the progression of oxidative stress, inflammation, and pathological fibrosis within the synovial tissue in FS, potentially leading to the reduction or reversal of capsule fibrosis and joint stiffness. For further clinical application, we design and synthesize a novel, superior, antioxidant and antibacterial CSMA-PBA/OD-DA (CPDA) hydrogel for the delivery of SaB. In vitro experiments demonstrate that the CPDA hydrogel exhibits excellent biocompatibility and rheological properties, rendering it suitable for intra-articular injections. Upon injection into the contracted joint cavity of FS model rat, the SaB-CPDA hydrogel accelerate the recovery of ROM and exhibit superior anti-fibrosis effect, presenting the promise for the treatment of FS in vivo.
