Few studies have explored the internal pathway of the association between sleep quality and subjective well-being among perimenopausal women.A survey was performed of 1063 perimenopausal women aged 40 to 60 years who participated in a regular health examination conducted at the First Hospital of Jilin University, China. Participants were asked to complete a study questionnaire. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Zung Self-rating Anxiety Scale, Perceived Social Support Scale and Subjective Well-being Scale for Chinese Citizens were used to assess sleep quality, anxiety symptoms, social support and subjective well-being, respectively. The data were analyzed using t-tests, analysis of variance, Pearson correlation analysis, multiple linear regression analysis and the PROCESS macro.The mean total subjective well-being score was 90.14 ± 12.80. The correlation analyzes showed that sleep quality (r = -0.341, P 0.001) and anxiety symptoms (r = -0.490, P 0.001) were negatively correlated with subjective well-being. Social support was positively correlated with subjective well-being (r = 0.480, P 0.001). The effect of sleep quality on subjective well-being was partially mediated by anxiety symptoms (Effect = -0.462, 95% CI = [-0.577, -0.363]). In addition, social support moderated the association between anxiety symptoms and subjective well-being (Index = -0.006, 95% CI = [-0.012, -0.001]).This was a cross-sectional study.The effect of sleep quality on subjective well-being was partially mediated by anxiety symptoms, and social support moderated the association between anxiety symptoms and subjective well-being among perimenopausal women.

Background Few studies have been conducted on the associations of body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) with cognitive impairment among Chinese older adults through a prospective design. Objective This study was aimed to evaluate the associations of BMI, WC, and WHtR with cognitive impairment. Methods We included participants aged 65 years and older in 2014 at baseline and 2018 follow-up surveys of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS). BMI, WC, and WHtR were calculated from measured weight, height, and waist circumference. Mini-Mental State Examination was utilized to assess cognitive impairment. Modified Poisson regression was used for calculating prevalence ratios, risk ratios, and 95% confidence intervals. Results A total of 5156 participants were included in 2014 at baseline. The prevalence of cognitive impairment was 42.5%, 26.7%, and 21.2% in underweight, normal-weight, and overweight/obesity participants defined by BMI categories, respectively, and 24.1% and 26.8% in central obesity participants defined by WC and WHtR cutoffs, respectively. Prospectively, participants with underweight were more likely to suffer from cognitive impairment (RR = 1.258, 95% CI: [1.016, 1.559]), but no risk was found among participants with overweight/obesity after adjustment. Regardless of whether covariates were adjusted or not, no effect on cognitive impairment was found in participants with WC and WHtR groups in the follow-up survey. Conclusions Underweight may be a significant risk factor for the cognitive impairment of Chinese older adults. Weight management programs targeting older adults should attach importance to achieving and maintaining optimal body weight and improving cognitive function.

Background This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of depressive symptoms and associated factors in middle-aged and elderly people in China. Methods Data were obtained from the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) 2018. We selected 16,767 respondents over the age of 45 as samples for research and analysis. A short version of the Center for Epidemiological Research Depression Scale (CES-D) was used to assess depressive symptoms. Chi-square test and multiple logistic regression analysis were used to explore the related factors of depressive symptoms. Back Propagation neural network model was established to examine the ranking of influencing factors of depressive symptoms. Results There was 24.1% prevalence of depressive symptoms among the respondents. The 14 important variables affecting depressive symptoms were screened out with the multivariable logistic regression. Based on the BP neural network to rank the degree of importance, the top five important variables were determined, which were subjective well-being (100.0%), self-reported health (92.0%), life satisfaction (83.4%), ADL disability (74.0%), and marital status (69.7%). Limitations This study was a cross-sectional study, and causality cannot be determined. Conclusions The prevalence of depressive symptoms in middle-aged and elderly Chinese people was high. Subjective quality of life evaluation, health condition and marital status were important factors that have an impact on depressive symptoms.

Little research has been conducted on the association between pregnant specific stress and depressive symptoms, and whether family relationship and leisure hobbies moderate the association.A cross-sectional survey of 647 pregnant women was conducted in Shenyang City, Liaoning Province of China. Pregnancy Pressure Scale (PPS), Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) and two single items were used to assess stress, perinatal depressive symptoms, family relationship and leisure hobbies, respectively. The analysis included χThe prevalence of perinatal depressive symptoms was 22.9% among the participants. After adjustment, four dimensions of pregnancy stress were found to increase the risk of depressive symptoms, and odds ratios (ORs) were 4.175 (95% confidence interval (CI) = 2.240, 7.779), 5.947 (95% CI = 2.624, 13.478), 3.907 (95% CI = 2.375, 6.425), and 8.534 (95% CI = 4.588, 15.873) for factors 1, 2, 3, and 4 (recognition of the role of parents, worrying about maternal and child health and safety, the changes in body shape and physical activity level, as well as child care and marriage), respectively. In addition, significant interactions were found between factor 2, factor 4 and family relationship, leisure hobbies with depressive symptoms, respectively (interactionTailored stress-overcoming programs, as well as health services, are needed to relieve women's pregnancy stress and prevent them from depressive symptoms. Clinical practice should conduct family relationship-oriented interventions and women themselves can cultivate extensive leisure hobbies in the period of pregnancy preparation.

This study aims to explore the associations between personality traits and depressive symptoms among Chinese adults and analyse the gender and age differences in the associations. A national representative sample of 28,628 adults aged 18 and above were selected from the 2018 China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) data. The short version of the Big Five Inventory (CBF-PI-15) and the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression (CES-D 8) were used to measure personality traits and depressive symptoms respectively. Binary logistic regression models were employed to analyse the associations between personality traits and depressive symptoms in the whole participants, different age groups and genders respectively. After adjustment, higher levels of conscientiousness, extraversion and agreeableness were related to lower level of depressive symptoms, while higher levels of openness and neuroticism were related to higher level of depressive symptoms (p 0.05). A significant interaction between gender and conscientiousness on depressive symptoms was found (interaction p = 0.005), and the association between conscientiousness and depressive symptoms was stronger in males than females (p 0.001). Significant interactions between age and conscientiousness (interaction p = 0.007), agreeableness (interaction p = 0.001) on depressive symptoms were found respectively. Moreover, the associations of conscientiousness and agreeableness with depressive symptoms were strongest among old group, followed by middle-aged group, and then young group (p 0.05). In conclusion, conscientiousness, extraversion and agreeableness had negative associations with depressive symptoms, while openness and neuroticism had positive associations with depressive symptoms. The negative association between conscientiousness and depressive symptoms was stronger among males than females, and the negative associations of conscientiousness and agreeableness with depressive symptoms were strongest among old group, followed by middle-aged group, and then young group.

Based on a prospective design, this study aimed to investigate the relationships of leisure activities with physical and cognitive functions among Chinese older adults.The respondents aged 65 years or more were selected from the 2014-2018 of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey. Physical function measurement indicators were reflected by activities of daily living (ADL), instrumental activities of daily living (IADL), and physical performance (PP), while cognitive function was assessed by Mini-Mental State Examination. Fine-Gray competing risk regression models were used to analyze the data.Using the figures for 2014 as a baseline for the study, we included 6047, 6216, 5951, and 5916 respondents in the ADL, IADL, PP, and cognitive function analyses, respectively. The prospective results showed that keeping domestic animals or pets was related to a lower risk of ADL disability of respondents after adjustment (SHR: 0.619, 95% CI: 0.486, 0.788). Similarly, taking part in social activities (SHR: 0.781, 95%CI: 0.658, 0.929) and reading books or newspapers (SHR: 0.793, 95% CI: 0.656, 0.958) were associated with a lower risk of IADL disability. Playing cards or mahjong was correlated with a lower risk of cognitive impairment (SHR: 0.669, 95% CI: 0.507, 0.882), while keeping domestic animals or pets was related to a higher risk of cognitive impairment (SHR: 1.279, 95% CI: 1.047, 1.562).Participation in leisure activities moderately may decrease the risk of a decline in physical and cognitive functions among Chinese older adults.

AIM This study aimed at exploring the impact of professional identity and psychological reward satisfaction on subjective well-being and clarifying the effect of psychological reward satisfaction on this relationship. BACKGROUND People know little about the effect of psychological reward satisfaction on the relationship between professional identity and subjective well-being. METHODS A cross-sectional survey was carried out on 1,009 nurses from Qiqihar City, Heilongjiang Province of China. Professional Identity Scale, Psychological Reward Satisfaction Scale and General Well-Being Schedule were used to assess professional identity, psychological reward satisfaction and subjective well-being, respectively. Associations were explored by using structural equation modelling. RESULTS The subjective well-being of 436 (43.2%) nurses was at low and moderate levels. This study aimed to identify the independent contributions of lifestyle factors to depressive symptoms among Chinese middle school students, with a focus on gender differences. A cross-sectional study of 3081 middle school students was conducted in Ganzhou City, Jiangxi Province, China. Students were asked to complete a questionnaire including socio-demographics, lifestyle factors, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and the Chinese Secondary School Students Depression Scale. The total prevalence of depressive symptoms was 19.9%. Poor quality of sleep, smoking, drinking and longer mobile phone use time were related to increased prevalence of depressive symptoms after adjusting for potential confounders. Background: Despite a great deal of existing research on nurses’ job stress and intention to stay, it is still unclear how the association between Chinese nurses’ job stress and intention to stay is affected by presenteeism and family functioning. Aims: This study aimed to investigate the correlations of Chinese nurses’ job stress, presenteeism, and family functioning with their intention to stay and clarify the mediating effect of presenteeism and the moderating effect of family functioning on the association between their job stress and intention to stay. Method: A cross-sectional study of 1,008 nurses was performed in a major general hospital in Qiqihar City, Heilongjiang Province, China. The participants were invited to engage in a questionnaire survey regarding job stress, presenteeism, family functioning, and intention to stay. A moderated mediation analysis was conducted through multiple linear regression analysis and the PROCESS macro. Results: Job stress and presenteeism were negatively correlated with intention to stay, whereas family functioning was positively correlated with intention to stay. The effect of job stress on intention to stay was partially mediated by presenteeism (Effect = −0.147, 95% CI = [−0.305, −0.003]). In addition, family functioning moderated the direct effect of job stress on intention to stay (Index = −0.134, 95% CI = [−0.274, −0.001]). Conclusions: Presenteeism and family functioning were found to play mediating and moderating roles, respectively, in the relationship between job stress and intention to stay. Relevant interventions or family-friendly programs should be developed to enhance nurses’ intention to stay.

Background The impact of perceived life stress on subjective well-being has been well-established; while few studies have explored the mediating and moderating mechanisms of the association between perceived life stress and subjective well-being among perimenopausal women. This study is aimed at exploring the mediating effect of depressive symptoms and the role of interests/hobbies as a moderator in the association between perceived life stress and subjective well-being among perimenopausal women. Methods The participants were 1,104 perimenopausal women at the age of 40 to 60, who were asked to complete a paper-based questionnaire. A single item was used to measure self-perceived life stress and interests/hobbies. The Zung Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS) and Subjective Well-being Scale for Chinese Citizens (SWBS-CC) were applied to assess both depressive symptoms and subjective well-being. Multiple linear regression analysis and the PROCESS macro were adopted to analyse not only the mediating effect of depressive symptoms but also the moderating role of interests/hobbies. Results Perceived life stress was negatively associated with subjective well-being (B = − 1.424, β = − 0.101, P β = − 0.060, P Conclusions Perceived life stress was negatively related to subjective well-being. The impact of perceived life stress on subjective well-being was mediated by depressive symptoms. Besides, interests/hobbies moderated the indirect effect of depressive symptoms on the relationship between perceived life stress and subjective well-being.

This study aimed at exploring the associations of parent-adolescent relationship and self-esteem with emotional and behavioral problems (EBPs) among Chinese adolescents using a large-scale nationally questionnaire survey data from China.Obtained from China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) 2018, the research data involved 2400 adolescents aged 10-15. Multiple linear regression analysis and the PROCESS macro were used for examining the mediating effect of self-esteem on the associations of parent-adolescent relationship with EBPs.After controlling the potential confounding factors, parent-adolescent relationship and self-esteem were significantly associated with EBPs (P 0.01). Correlation analysis results showed that parent-adolescent relationship (r = -0.116, P 0.01) and self-esteem (r = -0.209, P 0.01) were negatively correlated with EBPs. Self-esteem partially mediated the associations of parent-adolescent relationship with EBPs among Chinese adolescents.The cross-sectional design limited the ability to make causal inferences.Positive parent-adolescent relationship and high self-esteem contributed to fewer EBPs of adolescents. Parent-adolescent relationship predicted EBPs partially mediated by self-esteem. Establishing positive parent-adolescent relationship and improving individual self-esteem may thus be promising targets for intervention in adolescents with EBPs.

Background HIV/AIDS is a chronic disease leading to complications in infected individuals that often require surgical intervention. These patients’ serum CD4 T lymphocyte (CD4) counts represent one of the most important indicators of their ability to tolerate surgical treatment. Previous studies have demonstrated that CD4 cell count (CD4-CC) < 200 cells/μl may increase the risk of surgical complications in these patients, limiting their ability to undergo surgery, which may negatively affect their quality of life. Further investigation into the surgical outcomes of patients with CD4-CC < 200 cells/μl should provide guidance in making appropriate clinical decisions for the optimal healthcare of this patient demographic. Methods All enrolled patients were selected from 14 prefecture-level general hospitals in Guangxi, China, and were referred to AIDS outpost hospitals for inpatient surgical therapy. A total cohort of 168 adult patients was retrospectively analyzed. Multifactorial and stratified analyses were performed to evaluate the in surgical outcome differences for patients with CD4-CC < 200 cells/μl (N = 43), using those with CD4-CC ≥ 200 cells/μl (N = 125) as controls. Results Poor incisional healing was used as the primary outcome indicator, and postoperative complications were used as the secondary outcome indicator. In the patient group with CD4-CC < 200 cells/μl, the risk of surgical complications was significantly increased (OR 2.379; 95% CI [1.049–5.394]) after adjustment. Adjusted stratified analysis of the CD4-CC < 200 cells/μl group revealed that individuals over 60 years (OR 27.504; 95% CI [2.297–329.317]) with erythrocyte counts below 4.00/ml for males or 3.50/ml for females (OR 3.353; 95% CI [1.079–10.419]) had a significantly higher risk of postoperative complications; this finding was statistically different from the control (CD4 ≥ 200 cells/μl) group. However, there was no significant difference between the two groups regarding the risk of poorly healed incision outcomes. Conclusions Preliminary findings suggest that a serum CD4-CC < 200 cells/μl is not a definitive contraindication for surgical therapy and that baseline and surgical characteristics may help predict surgical outcomes in these patients. Further studies are needed to confirm these findings.

Background Limited published research has examined the relationships of coping styles and sleep quality with anxiety symptoms in Chinese school adolescents. We aimed to explore the effect of coping styles and sleep quality on anxiety symptoms. Furthermore, we investigated the interactions of coping styles and sleep quality with anxiety symptoms. Methods The survey was conducted in Jiangxi Province, China. The Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and Chinese Secondary School Students Anxiety Scale were utilized to assess sleep quality, coping styles and anxiety symptoms, respectively. Multiple logistic regression analysis was applied to explore the relationships of coping styles and sleep quality with anxiety symptoms. Results A total of 3081 students participated in this study, 50.8% of whom were boys; the number of participants in grades 1, 2 and 3 were 979, 1085 and 1017, respectively. The prevalence of anxiety symptoms was 27.3%. Individuals with poor sleep quality were 3.558 (95% CI = 2.716–4.660) times as likely to have anxiety symptoms than those with good sleep quality. Higher negative coping style scores increased the prevalence of anxiety symptoms (OR = 2.101, 95% CI = 1.894–2.332), whereas higher positive coping style scores were related to reduced odds of anxiety symptoms (OR = 0.892, 95% CI = 0.800–0.995). Interactions of coping styles and sleep quality with anxiety symptoms were not found (all p > 0.05). The association between negative coping style and anxiety symptoms was mediated by sleep quality. Limitations This study was cross-sectional and limited to Ganzhou City. Conclusions The results of our study showed a higher prevalence of anxiety symptoms compared with the result of a previous study in Chinese school adolescents. Negative coping style and poor sleep quality were associated with an increased prevalence of anxiety symptoms, whereas positive coping style was related to a decreased prevalence of anxiety symptoms. Sleep quality was a mediating factor between negative coping style and anxiety symptoms.

Background Little is known about the impact of activities of daily living (ADL) disability on personal and spouse depression symptoms among Chinese. Methods We used data from the baseline and 2013 follow-up surveys of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, a nationally representative survey in 17,708 adults aged 45 years and older, to evaluate cross-sectional and prospective association between ADL disability and depression symptoms of subjects and their spouses. The derived basic ADL scale (BADL) and the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale short form were utilized to assess ADL disability and depressive symptoms, respectively. Logistic regression was used to calculate odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI), adjusting for depression risk factors and taking into account the complex survey design and response rate. Results There were 15,890 subjects included in the study. Prevalence of baseline depression symptoms was 29.5% (95%CI 27.9–31.1%), 58.0% (95%CI 54.5–61.4%) and 73.6% (95%CI 70.4–76.8%) in subjects with BADL scores of 0, 1 and ≥2, respectively, and 27.0% (95%CI 25.3–28.7%), 34.2% (95%CI 30.0–38.4%) and 43.8% (95%CI 39.1–48.5%) in subjects without ADL disability while having spouses with BADL scores of 0, 1 and ≥2, respectively. Prospectively, BADL score ≥2 was associated with higher risk of depression symptoms of subjects (OR 1.63, 95% CI 1.03–2.57) and their spouses (OR 1.50, 95% CI 1.01–2.22). Limitations Bias might be introduced because of observational study design, and findings may not be generalizable to younger population. Conclusions ADL disability might have potential to increase risk of depression symptoms of middle-aged and older Chinese adults and their spouses.

(1) Background: This study aimed to explore the factors associated with the subjective well-being (SWB) of Chinese adolescents from a more comprehensive perspective and to analyze the importance of its influencing factors. (2) Methods: Obtained from the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) 2018, the research data involved 2316 adolescents aged 10–15. By using the Chi-square test, t-test and binary logistic regression, we investigated the associations of individual-, family- and community-level factors with SWB in Chinese adolescents. To explore the rank of the influencing factors of SWB, the random forest model was set up. (3) Results: In individual-level factors, girls, who were adolescents with higher academic performance and school satisfaction, with the habit of midday napping and reading books, and with higher self-esteem, had a higher SWB. In family-level factors, mothers living at home resulted in a higher SWB, while quarrelling with their parents led to low SWB. In community-level factors, adolescents with better social relationships, social trust and who were better at telling their troubles to others had a higher SWB. Based on the random forest model, the importance degree was ranked, and the top five were decided, including self-esteem (89.949), social relations (43.457), academic performance (31.971), school satisfaction (27.651) and quarrelling with parents (19.026). (4) Conclusions: Self-esteem, social relations, academic performance, school satisfaction and quarrelling with parents are all important variables that are related to the SWB of Chinese adolescents.

Background Most Chinese migrants have been faced with obstacles to getting access to local public health services. Young migrants among internal migrants make a major contribution to the economy. However, the establishment of their health records has been ignored. This research was aimed at exploring the status and associated factors of the establishment of health records among young Chinese migrants. Methods Data were obtained from the 2017 China Migrants Dynamic Survey (CMDS). Chi-square test and binary logistic regression were performed to investigate the associated factors of the establishment of health records among young Chinese migrants. Results Approximately 30.2% of young migrants had their health records established in inflow communities. Urban residence, medical insurance (insured), and lower average monthly household income were attributed to the establishment of more health records. Young migrants who were in northeast China and across provinces and immigrated for working or engaging in trade were less likely to have health records established. Young migrants who participated in social activities and public affairs activities and took type of people in touch as natives in the inflow area showed a higher possibility of establishing health records. Meanwhile, receiving health education and hearing about national basic public health services (BPHSs) were beneficial for establishing the health records of more young migrants. Conclusion This study showed that the health records of young migrants had a relatively low establishment rate. Sociodemographic and migration characteristics, health status, public health services, and social integration factors were all related to the health record establishment of young Chinese migrants.

Aims and objectives The present study was aimed at describing the status of job burnout and exploring the mediating roles of psychological capital and professional identity on the association between organisational justice and job burnout. Background With the shortage of nurses all over the world, nurses' job burnout has become the focus of studies in recent years. However, limited published research has examined the mediating roles of psychological capital and professional identity on the association between organisational justice and job burnout within hospital contexts in China. Design A cross-sectional design. Methods A total of 1,009 nurses were enrolled from a major general hospital located in Qiqihar City in the northeast of China from March-July 2018, and asked to complete questionnaires regarding organisational justice, psychological capital, professional identity and job burnout. The STROBE checklist was adhered to in this study. Results It was observed that the overall proportion of nurses with job burnout was 58.8%. All the correlations among organisational justice, psychological capital, professional identity and job burnout were statistically significant, with coefficients ranging between -0.487-0.863. Psychological capital and professional identity had indirect effects equal to -0.072 and -0.142, respectively, on the association between organisational justice and job burnout, taking up 13.7% and 26.9% of the total effect, respectively. The serial indirect effect of psychological capital and professional identity was -0.129, accounting for 24.5% of the total effect. Conclusions This study showed the necessity of addressing the status of job burnout among Chinese nurses. Psychological capital and professional identity may mediate the linkage between organisational justice and job burnout independently and accumulatively. Relevance to clinical practice Nursing managers should strengthen organisational justice and improve the psychological capital and professional identity of nurses through effective strategies to prevent the job burnout of nurses.

Introduction Diabetes mellitus (DM), a common tuberculosis (TB) comorbidity, is associated with delayed bacillary clearance during anti-TB treatment and unfavorable outcomes. Bedaquiline (BDQ), when used as part of multidrug regimen for multidrug-resistant/extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR/XDR-TB), has been shown to be effective and safe although treatment outcome and risks for patients with MDR/XDR-TB and DM are unknown. A multicenter retrospective study was conducted to compared the safety and effectiveness of 24-week BDQ-containing anti-TB treatment for patients with MDR/XDR-TB with and without DM. Methods The study of patients with MDR/XDR-TB with or without DM (enrolled February 2018–September 2019, 21 Chinese hospitals) was supervised by the New Drug Introduction and Protection Program (NDIP). Of 640 patients with MDR/XDR-TB receiving BDQ-containing anti-TB treatments, two propensity score-matched groups (107 DM/107 non-DM) were compared for cumulative culture conversion rate, time to culture conversion, adverse events, and corrected QT interval. Background: Although antipsychotic monotherapy is recommended as the main treatment for schizophrenia, antipsychotic polypharmacy is not rare in practice. However, longitudinal data on antipsychotic polypharmacy in schizophrenia treatment are limited. Methods: This longitudinal database study described antipsychotic polypharmacy in the treatment of schizophrenia in real-world settings in China and Japan. We retrieved information about antipsychotic treatment for schizophrenia from January 2010 to December 2014 from two hospital Electronic Medical Records databases in China and one claims database, Japan Medical Data Centre in Japan. Eligible patients had a diagnosis of schizophrenia (International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision F20.x) and at least one prescription for first or second generation antipsychotics. Antipsychotic polypharmacy was defined as having more than one antipsychotic medication overlapping for ⩾60 days. The Japan Medical Data Centre study cohort was further stratified by employees (insurance beneficiaries) and their dependents. Results: The study cohorts comprised 11,961 patients from China and 25,034 (10,661 employee sub-cohort and 14,373 dependent sub-cohort) from 14 days Japan Medical Data Centre in Japan. Most patients were prescribed monotherapy (87.3% in China and 80.1% in Japan), of which oral second-generation antipsychotics were the majority (78.9% in China and 65.8% in Japan). The prevalence rate of antipsychotic polypharmacy was 12.7% in China and 19.9% in Japan (13.7% in employees vs 24.5% in dependents). The most common combinations were two oral antipsychotics. Combinations of more than two drugs were uncommon in China (0.3%) but were prescribed for 5.3% of patients in Japan. Among patients treated with monotherapy, 12.6/100 person-years (11.8%) in China and 9.6/100 person-years (11.0%) in Japan switched to antipsychotic polypharmacy during follow-up. Younger patients were more likely to switch to antipsychotic polypharmacy than older patents in all study cohorts. Conclusion: The observed rates of antipsychotic polypharmacy ranged from 12.7% in China to 19.9% in Japan. Switching from monotherapy to antipsychotic polypharmacy was most likely to occur in younger patients with schizophrenia.

ObjectivesThe main objective of this study was to explore the associations of family relationships and negative life events with depressive symptoms among Chinese adolescents.MethodsA cross-sectional study of 3081 middle school students was conducted in Ganzhou City, Jiangxi Province, China. Students were asked to complete questionnaires regarding family relationships, negative life events, and depressive symptoms. A mediation analysis was carried out using a multiple regression analysis and the PROCESS macro method.ResultsOf all participants, 19.9% reported experiencing depressive symptoms. The prevalence of depressive symptoms was 13.0% and 29.2% in participants with good and poor parental relationships, and the prevalence of depressive symptoms was 11.4% and 30.9% in participants with closed and alienated parental-child relationships, respectively. Parental relationships, parental-child relationships, and negative life events were positively correlated with depressive symptoms. The effect of parental relationships on depressive symptoms was fully mediated by negative life events (Effect = 0.052, 95% CI = [0.023, 0.082]), while the effect of parent-child relationships on adolescent depressive symptoms was partially mediated by negative life events (Effect = 0.075, 95% CI = [0.048, 0.104]).ConclusionsOur results showed a high prevalence of depressive symptoms in Chinese adolescents. Poor family relationships may have the potential to increase the risk of depressive symptoms, and they could affect depressive symptoms through negative life events.

Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is a rodent-borne disease caused by hantaviruses (HVs). Climate factors have a significant impact on the transmission of HFRS. Here, we characterized the dynamic temporal trend of HFRS and identified the roles of climate factors in its transmission in Changchun, China. Surveillance data of HFRS cases and data on related environmental variables from 2013 to 2017 were collected. A principal components regression (PCR) model was used to quantify the relationship between climate factors and transmission of HFRS. During 2013 to 2017, a distinctly declining temporal trend of annual HFRS incidence was identified. Four principal components were extracted, with a cumulative contribution rate of 89.282%. Supplemental Digital Content is available in the text, Background: Tasquinimod is an oral quinoline-3-carboxamide derivative for the treatment of metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC). Tasquinimod has antiangiogenic, immunomodulatory, and antimetastatic properties, but it is also associated with toxicities, including skeletal pain, digestive disorders, fatigue, insomnia, and mental disorders. We aimed to perform a meta-analysis to evaluate the efficacy, safety, and long-term survival for tasquinimod in patients with mCRPC. Methods: Searches were carried out in PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library. Eligible articles included randomized clinical trials (RCTs) comparing systemic or combination therapy (excluding primary or secondary androgen deprivation therapy, bone protective agents, or radionuclides) with placebo in men with mCRPC. Results: Three RCTs were selected for final evaluation. The pooled results from the 3 studies indicated that tasquinimod was associated with good radiologic progression-free survival (rPFS) in mCRPC. For adverse effects (AEs), the results of meta-analysis indicated that patients with mCRPC who received tasquinimod had obvious anemia (risk ratio (RR) 1.35, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.06–1.73, P = .02), back pain (RR: 1.57, 95% CI: 1.01–2.47, P = .05), pain in the extremities (RR: 1.90, 95% CI: 1.14–3.17, P = .01), insomnia (RR: 1.50, 95% CI: 1.03–2.17, P = .03), vomiting (RR: 1.52, 95% CI: 1.04–2.21, P = .03), and peripheral edema (RR: 1.52, 95% CI: 1.03–2.23, P = .03). Conclusions: Tasquinimod is associated with better rPFS in mCRPC. The toxicity of tasquinimod requires further investigation, it is not recommended for routine clinical use.

Objectives The study aimed to explore the association of coping styles and social support with psychological distress among patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) as well as gender differences in these associations. Methods A cross-sectional study of 769 ESRD patients was conducted at 25 hospitals in Qiqihar City, China. All information was collected using structured questionnaires that were self-administered by the patients. Patients’ psychological health status, coping styles and perceived social support were measured using the 12-item General Health Questionnaire, the Medical Coping Modes Questionnaire and the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support. Student’s t test, analysis of variance (ANOVA) and binary logistic regression analysis were used for data analysis. Results A total of 72.3% of participants reported psychological distress, and the prevalence of distress was higher in females (77.0%) than in males (68.8%). The usage of the acceptance-resignation coping style was positively related to psychological distress (B = 0.459, P P P for interaction term = 0.007). Conclusions Greater use of the acceptance-resignation style and lower social support are related to a higher risk of psychological distress. Greater use of the confrontation style is related to a lower risk of psychological distress in females but not in males.

Background: To explore the prognostic value of C-reactive protein/albumin ratio (CAR) in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), we conducted a comprehensive meta-analysis of relevant literature on the association between CAR and NPC outcome. In recent years, an increasing number of studies has been published analyzing the possible prognostic utility of C-reactive protein/albumin ratio (CAR) in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), but the results are still controversial. Methods: A relevant literature search was performed by using the PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, CBM, Wanfang, VIP, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure databases to evaluate the prognostic value of CAR in patients with NPC. The last date of our primary search was December 5, 2017. This meta-analysis was conducted on the basis of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Pooled hazard ratio (HR) with 95% confidence interval (95% CI) was utilized to estimate the association of CAR and overall survival (OS) and distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS). Results: Five studies that enrolled 5533 patients with NPC were finally quantified. Background Physical activity (PA) and smoking have been reported to be associated with the duration and severity of common cold symptoms. However, few studies have addressed the associations between the frequency of leisure-time exercise, cigarette smoking status and the frequency of the common cold in a cold area. This study was designed to investigate these issues in northeastern China. Methods This cross-sectional study included individuals who participated in a regular health examination conducted in Jilin Province, China. Information on episodes of the common cold, the frequency of leisure-time exercise and cigarette smoking status in the past year were collected by self-administered health questionnaires. Ordinal logistic regression models were used to analyse the associations between the frequency of leisure-time exercise, cigarette smoking status and the retrospective frequency of common cold. Results A total of 1413 employees participated in the study, with an average age of 38.92 ± 9.04 years and 44.4% of them were male. Of all participants, 80.8% reported having experienced the common cold in the past year. After adjustment, the risk of suffering from the common cold more than once (odds ratios (ORs), 1.59; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.27–1.99) in passive smokers was 1.59 times as high as that in non-smokers. Nevertheless, the results of the adjusted analysis showed no statistically significant relation between current smoking and the frequency of the common cold. Objectives Metabolic syndrome (MS) is considered to be a cluster of interrelated risk factors for metabolism, which may increase arterial stiffness and cardiovascular morbidity. The cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI) is a reliable indicator of arterial stiffness and early arteriosclerosis. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the gender-specific relationship between MS and CAVI in the general Chinese population. Methods A total of 1,301 subjects aged 20 to 60 years participated in this study. CAVI was measured noninvasively using a Vasera VS-1000 device. Blood samples and waist circumference were examined to identify metabolic syndrome according to the criteria set forth in the 2009 Joint Scientific Statement. Results The prevalence of MS in the study subjects was 17.4% (30.7% in males and 7.0% in females, P < 0.001). CAVI values were significantly higher in MS subjects than in non-MS subjects and increased linearly as the number of MS components increased in females, but not in males. Using multiple regression analysis, we found that BMI was correlated with CAVI in the overall population and in both genders, and that high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) was associated with CAVI in males, while the number of MS components was related to CAVI in females. CAVI values increased linearly with age in both genders (P-trend < 0.001 for both), and this correlation was stronger in males than in females. Conclusions There are gender-specific differences in the association of MS and CAVI. First, the effects of the number of MS components on CAVI are stronger in females than in males. Second, the effect of each MS component on arterial stiffness may differ in relation to gender. In addition, aging affects arterial stiffness more severely in males, and the increase in arterial stiffness tends to occur at a younger age in males than in females. Larger samples and longitudinal studies are needed to further confirm our results in the future.

Introduction. Cervical cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers among women in China. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends routine screening for cervical cancer, and the WHO Global Monitoring Framework suggests that every nation monitors cervical cancer screening. However, little information is available on cervical cancer screening behavior among women in China. Methods. We used data from the 2010 China Chronic Disease and Risk Factor Surveillance System that included 51,989 women aged 18 years and older. We report the proportion of women who reported ever having had a Papanicolaou (Pap) test, stratified by sociodemographic characteristics and geographic region. Multivariable logistic regression modeling was performed to adjust for potential confounders. Results. Overall, 21% of 51,989 women reported having ever had a Pap test. The highest proportion was reported among women aged 30–39 years (30.1%, 95% confidence interval, 26.8%–33.4%). In all geographic regions, women in rural areas were consistently less likely than women in urban areas to report having had a Pap test. Among women who reported ever having a Pap test, 82% reported having the most recent test in the past 3 years. Factors associated with reporting ever having a test were being aged 30–49 years, higher education, being married, and having urban health insurance. Conclusion. Our results indicate that screening programs need to be strengthened along with a more intense focus on specific demographic groups. National cervical cancer screening guidelines and comprehensive implementation strategies are needed to make screening services available and accessible to all women. Implications for Practice: This study is the largest nationwide and population-based assessment of self-reported history of Pap test for cervical cancer screening in China. This article describes cervical cancer screening behavior among women and examines key demographic and geographic factors. Only one fifth of Chinese women reported having ever had a Pap test for cervical cancer screening. The results highlight the urgent need to develop national cervical cancer screening guidelines and strategies that make screening services widely available, accessible, and acceptable to all women, especially to those who reside in rural areas and those with no health insurance.

Introduction Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed type of cancer among women in China. However, China does not have a national screening program or national screening guidelines. Little information on participation in breast cancer screening among Chinese women is available. Methods We used data from the 2010 China Chronic Disease and Risk Factor Surveillance System that included 53,513 women aged 18 years or older. Women were asked about breast cancer screening participation (any type of screening method), and we examined screening participation rates. We adjusted estimates and performed multivariable logistic regression to adjust for potential confounders. Results Overall, 21.7% (95% confidence interval [CI], 19.2%-24.2%) of respondents reported previous breast cancer screening. The participation rates were highest among women aged 30 to 39 years (30.7%; 95% CI, 26.9%-34.4%) and lowest among women 70 years or older (6.3%; 95% CI, 5.1%-7.6%). Compared with women living in the western region, women in the eastern region were 1.5 times more likely to be screened (adjusted odds ratio [OR], 1.5; 95% CI, 1.2-2.0). Compared with women without insurance, women with urban insurance were more likely to be screened (prevalence ratio = 2.6; 95% CI, 2.3-3.0) and be screened within the last 2 years (OR = 1.3; 95% CI, 1.0-1.7; P = .04). Conclusion Breast cancer screening participation rates among Chinese women were low and varied greatly by age, region, and insurance status. Comprehensive and prioritized strategies are needed to improve breast cancer screening participation among older women, those without medical insurance, and those living in the west.

The purpose of the study is to investigate the status of eutrophication, the polluted situation of algae and microcystins in different water bodies of X County in the Huai River Basin.Superficial water and sediment samples were taken from S River, Y River and a representative ditch in May 2010 (median-water period) and August (high water period ). Chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), chlorophyll a (Chl a) and algal density were detected by the recommended methods of national standard microcystin-LF/LR/LW/RR/YR in water (dissolved form), algal cells and sediments were detected by solid phase extraction and HPLC.Water pollutions in rivers and ditches of X County were serious, and total nitrogen and total phosphorus significantly exceed to the national standard for surface water quality. Most indexes of the water quality ranged from grade III to worse than grade V of national standard. Total nitrogen (4.78 mg/L) was most serious pollutions in the mainstream of S river, the water quality in high water period was better than in median-water period (P0.05). However, water quality in inner river Y and ditch in high water period was worse than in median-water period. Maximum chlorophyll a in ditch water reached 648.4 mg/ m3. The percent of cyanobacteria in various water bodies was less than 10% in median-water period, increased sharply to 40% and became dominant species in high water period. The maximum percentage of cyanobacteria was 44% in ditch. Microcystin-RR was the main toxin detected in water (dissolved form), algal cells and sediments. Maximum MC-RR in water and sediments reached 17.731 microg/L and 0.802 microg/g, respectively. The detected frequencies and concentrations of MC-LF/LR/LW/YR in most samples were low.Water bodies in X County were between middle eutrophication and hyper-eutrophication. Microcystin-RR of sediments in high water period were significant higher than in median-water period (P0.05).
