Abstract

This paper describes the design and construction of the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber and associated systems. MicroBooNE is the first phase of the Short Baseline Neutrino program, located at Fermilab, and will utilize the capabilities of liquid argon detectors to examine a rich assortment of physics topics. In this document details of design specifications, assembly procedures, and acceptance tests are reported.

Abstract

The enhancement of the efficiency in free-electron lasers (FELs) through the use of a tapered wiggler is well known. The physics of the tapered wiggler interaction has been studied in theory and simulation, and large efficiency enhancements have been observed in the laboratory in oscillators and seeded amplifiers. In this paper, we study the differences in the tapered wiggler interaction between seeded amplifiers and in FELs that start up from noise and grow to saturation in a single pass through the wiggler. This configuration is commonly referred to as self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE). In comparison with seeded amplifiers, SASE FELs exhibit shot-to-shot fluctuations due to random phase noise in the electron bunches, and our purpose in this paper is to determine the effect of this phase noise on the tapered wiggler interaction. To this end, we study the interaction numerically using the MEDUSA simulation code for seeded and SASE FELs operating in the infrared regime. The results of the simulations indicate that the overall efficiencies of the seeded and SASE FELs are comparable for a uniform wiggler but that the output spectrum for the SASE FEL is much broader than for the seeded case. For a tapered wiggler, the efficiency enhancement in the SASE FEL is less than that found in the seeded example due to the broader excited spectrum that detunes the tapered wiggler interaction. Abstract

The problem of radiation start up in free-electron lasers (FELs) is important in the simulation of virtually all FEL configurations including oscillators and amplifiers in both seeded master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) and self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE) modes. Both oscillators and SASE FELs start up from spontaneous emission due to shot noise on the electron beam, which arises from the random fluctuations in the phase distribution of the electrons. The injected power in a MOPA is usually large enough to overwhelm the shot noise. However, this noise must be treated correctly in order to model the initial start up of the harmonics. In this paper, we discuss and compare two different shot noise models that are implemented in both one-dimensional wiggler-averaged (PERSEO) and non-wiggler-averaged (MEDUSA1D) simulation codes, and a three-dimensional non-wiggler-averaged (MEDUSA) formulation. These models are compared for examples describing both SASE and MOPA configurations in one dimension, in steady-state, and time-dependent simulations. Remarkable agreement is found between PERSEO and MEDUSA1D for the evolution of the fundamental and harmonics. In addition, three-dimensional correction factors have been included in the MEDUSA1D and PERSEO, which show reasonable agreement with MEDUSA for a sample MOPA in steady-state and time-dependent simulations. Abstract

Although the guinea pig is used widely in experimental medical research, including in studies on micturition control, the spinal origin of preganglionic parasympathetic bladder and somatic external urethral sphincter motoneurons is not known. In the male, guinea pig using wheat germ agglutinin-conjugated horseradish peroxidase and dextran Alexa Fluor((C)) 488/568 tracers, preganglionic parasympathetic bladder motoneurons were observed in the ventrolateral part of the intermediolateral cell group of the first sacral segment. The external urethral sphincter motoneurons were found to be located in the ventral horn of the first sacral segment, in a cell group corresponding with the nucleus of Onuf in cat and human. Abstract

A computer program is described for numerical simulation of one-dimensional oscillators and mappings suitable for use in classes ranging from introductory dynamics to more advanced nonlinear dynamics. Properties of the algorithms used for integrating the equations of motion are discussed as well as some of the interesting physics that can be studied, giving illustrations produced with the program.

19. Level Playing Fields: The Democratization of Amateur Sport in Pennsylvania

Abstract

This dissertation examines how amateur sports once dominated and controlled by Pennsylvania's Leisure Class became accessible to non-elites over the course of the twentieth century. Rising standards of living and increased leisure time were pre-requisites for broader public participation. But this study argues that the democratization of amateur sport depended on the active intervention of the state and, to a lesser extent, the market, both of which broadened access to privately controlled playing fields. In hunting, state game management restored wild game populations, thus ensuring a bountiful supply of game for all Pennsylvanians, irrespective of social class. Likewise, the first municipally owned golf courses, often situated in public parks, offered the only alternative to the private courses which up to that point dominated the game and regulated participation. Finally, the market-driven demand for new sources of "football material" on college campuses opened opportunities for working-class student athletes, most of whom were recruited and subsidized by wealthy alumni.Many of these changes were set in motion by elites acting in their own self interest. Over time, though, the democratization of amateur sports became a goal in itself. During the 1910s, the state game commission shifted its emphasis from game propagation and game law enforcement to the acquisition of public game lands, a policy focus which benefited hunters without access to private property. In golf, a second wave of municipal courses, many billed as "people's country clubs" and fortified by federal money, were designed to be accessible to the greatest number of people, and without the membership restrictions which obtained at many early public courses. Abstract

Cerebrospinal fluid specimens from patients with tuberculous (17 cases), cryptococcal (15 cases), and viral (14 cases) meningitis were analyzed by frequency-pulsed electron capture gas-liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry. Compounds that disappeared after therapy were found to be present in each of these specimens and were not detected in controls. They occurred in repetitive patterns such that these three types of meningitis could be rapidly distinguished. The compound associated with tuberculous meningitis has been tentatively identified. These finding have implications for rapid diagnosis, pathophysiological studies, and possible new therapeutic approaches.

Abstract

In a tokamak, the electron distribution deviates from a Maxwellian. This is because the magnetically untrapped electrons moving parallel to the applied electric field tend to run away. Because of the presence of trapped electrons, the distribution also departs from the Chapman-Enskog solution of the weak electric field problem. Previous analytic and numerical methods have treated this distortion in the limit of vanishingly small electric fields, a vanishing small number of trapped electrons, or both. We present a numerical method which relaxes these limitations, and illustrate the distribution functions which result from it. (Author)
