1. Conspecific sharing of breeding sites by anopheline female mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) inferred from microsatellite markers

Abstract

The number of Anopheles gambiae and Anopheles arabiensis females that used each of the 33 sampled breeding sites in west Kenya was estimated by microsatellite markers and related statistics to test the hypothesis that conspecific females share aquatic sites. Totally, 166 An. gambiae and 168 An. arabiensis larvae were identified and were genotyped. The mean number of larvae per breeding site was 8.3 for An. gambiae and 8.4 for An. arabiensis. The likelihood method estimated that, for An. gambiae, the mean number of females that would have laid eggs per breeding site was 5.2 and ranged from 2 to 9, and for An. arabiensis, the mean was 5.0 with a range of 2-10. The clustering method estimated that the mean number of females laying eggs per breeding site was 6.8 for An. gambiae. The results provide molecular evidence that females of one or both species share breeding sites. © 2007 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.

Abstract

A cryocooler cooled 10 T split-pair superconducting magnet with horizontal and vertical access has been designed and constructed. It has a horizontal bore of 51 mm and the vertical access window is made up of the (Nb,Ti)3Sn and NbTi split-pair coils, the Bi(2223) bulk current leads and the 4K GM cryocoolers. The magnet has a central field of 10 T at an operating current of 151 A at a ramp rate of 0.175 A/sec. It can be cooled down in about 52 hours.

15. Lack of kdr mutations in a population of Asian tiger mosquitoes from Costa Rica

Abstract

Use of insecticides has led to the fixation of alleles for single amino acid changes in the voltage gated sodium channel (VGSC) associated with knockdown resistance (kdr) in insects of agricultural or medical importance. In this short note, we study allele frequencies of 5 kdr loci, S989, I1011, L1014, V1016 and F1534 in a population of the Asian tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus (Skuse) (Diptera Culicidae), collected in the only identified location with persistent infestations in Costa Rica. We found no mutant alleles associated with kdr resistance, and a synonymous point mutation was observed at loci V1016. Our results likely reflect the recent invasion of the Asian tiger mosquito in Costa Rica, and also provide a baseline for future studies looking at the global distribution of kdr mutations in this important vector of dengue and chikungunya viruses., Bulletin of Insectology, 68(1), pp.61-63; 2015

17. Geographical Distribution of Aedes aegypti aegyptiand Aedes aegypti formosus(Diptera: Culicidae) in Kenya and Environmental Factors Related to Their Relative Abundance

Abstract

The mosquito Aedes aegypti(L.) is the primary vector of various infectious viruses and is typified by a polymorphic color and abundance of white scales on the body. It has been conventionally separated into two subspecies, Ae. aeg. formosus(Walker) (Aaf) and Ae. aeg. aegypti(L.) (Aaa), with Aaf considered a ‘sylvan’ form and Aaa a ‘domestic’ form. Because the two subspecies show different susceptibilities to dengue viruses it is important to understand their distribution. In this study, we collected larvae from artificial and natural habitats in southern Kenya and reared them to adults to morphologically identify subspecies. We describe the geographical distribution and relative abundance of Aaa and Aaf in Kenya, and estimate the environmental factors associated with their distributions by GIS using climate and environment data. A total of 5,243 Ae. aegyptiadults were collected from 249 sites, with Aaa accounting for 22% of the specimens. The relative abundance of Aaa was higher in coastal areas versus sites in western Kenya. Aaa abundance was also higher in urbanized than forested areas, which is consistent with known ecology. In contrast and inconsistent with previous studies, both Aaa and Aaf were sympatric in artificial and natural habitats. The high relative abundance of Aaa in coastal areas might derive from old populated cities, climate, and/or introduction from abroad.

Abstract

This workshop was planned to make use of the neutron from the reactor and the pulse neutron source JSNS for the industrial world. Especially, this workshop focused on the stress measurement by the neutron diffraction and it was held on the Tokai JAERI from October 15 to 16, 2001. The participant total was 93 and 40 participated from the industrial world. The introduction of the residual stress development of measurement technique by the neutron diffraction method and a research of the measurement of the residual stress such as the nuclear reactor material, the ordinary structure material, the composite material, the quenching steel, the high strength material were presented and discussed in this workshop. Moreover, it was introduced for the industrial world that an internal stress measurement is important for development of new product or an improvement of a manufacturing process. The question from the industrial world about which can be measured the product form, the size, the measurement precision, the resolution, and the installation plan of internal stress measurement equipment using the pulse neutron source under construction. From an expert, there was a question concerning on the internal stress distribution measurement about stress corrosion cracking etc.
