Mapping the large neural networks of animal and human brains is a fundamental but so far elusive task, because of the massive amount of data and the consequent prohibitively long image taking and processing times. We developed an effective strategy called “AXON” (Accelerated X-ray Observation of Neurons) to solve this problem. AXON can achieve comprehensive whole-brain mapping within a reasonable time by combining fast image taking and processing, plus two other critical performances: three-dimensional (3D) imaging with high and isotropic spatial resolution, and multi-scale resolution. We successfully tested this strategy with coordinated experiments at four synchrotron facilities in Japan, Taiwan, Singapore and Korea on two animal models, Drosophila and mouse. Its performances notably allowed full 3D mapping of the Drosophila brain in a few days. With reasonable improvements, AXON can deliver full mapping of large animal and human brains on a realistic time scale of a few years.

X-ray irradiation has been extensively used in recent years as a fabrication step for nanoparticles and nanoparticle systems. A variant of this technique, continuous-flow X-ray irradiation, has recently been developed, and offers three important advantages: precise control of the irradiation dose, elimination of convection effects in the precursor solution, and suitability for large-scale production. Here, the use of this method to fabricate Au nano-meshes of interest as transparent and flexible electrodes for optoelectronics is reported. The study includes extensive characterization of the synthesis parameters and of the product properties, with rather encouraging results.

The catalytic properties of Pd have triggered a strong interest in the related catalysis by Au–Pd nanoparticles. However, the analysis of such phenomena has been complicated so far due to the presence of capping. Using X-ray irradiation, we produced uncapped Au–Pd nanoparticles and studied their catalytic features, finding in particular their relationship to the Pd content. Furthermore, the fabrication process is per se interesting, yielding excellent and flexibly controllable nanoparticles with a rather simple procedure.

We demonstrate that the combination of x-ray irradiation and capping by polyethylene glycol (PEG) produces excellent flexibility in controlling the structure of Au-Pd nanoparticles while preserving their catalytic performance. We specifically adopted two different fabrication methods: co-reduction and seed-assisted reduction. In both cases, precursor composition plays an important role in controlling the phases and size of the bimetallic nanoparticles. The optimal catalytic performance is obtained with the highest Pd concentration and when the nanoparticles consist of a Au core and a Pd shell.

Surface thiolation affects the size of gold nanoparticles and the presence of visible luminescence under UV stimulation. We explored these phenomena by analysing alkanethiolate coatings with different carbon chain lengths, from 3-mercaptopropionic acid to 16-mercaptohexadecanoic acid, synthesized by intense X-ray irradiation. Photoluminescence is present for the smallest nanoparticles, but its intensity becomes more intense as the carbon chain length increases, achieving a quantum efficiency of 28% with a 16-mercaptohexadecanoic acid coating.

Call admission control of multiservice hierarchical wireless networks supporting soft handoff is studied, where users with different average call holding times are assigned to different layers, i.e., microcells in the lower layer are used to carry users with shorter call holding time, whereas macrocells in the upper layer are for users with longer call holding time. Further, to give handoff calls priority over new calls, handoff queues are provided for handoff calls that can not obtain the required channel immediately. According to whether handoff queues are provided in microcells and/or macrocells, four different call admission control schemes are proposed and studied. We derive the mathematical model of the considered system with multi- dimensional Markov process, and find the steady state probability distribution iteratively and thus the performance measures of interest: new call blocking probability, forced termination probability, and mean waiting time in handoff queue. Analytical results show that providing handoff queues in both microcells and macrocells can achieve the best blocking performance at the expense of mean waiting time in handoff queue.
