Abstract A critical bottleneck toward all-solid-state batteries lies in how the solid(electrode)-solid(electrolyte) interface is fabricated and maintained over repeated cycles. Conventional composite cathodes, with crystallographically distinct electrode/electrolyte interfaces of random particles, create complexities with varying (electro)chemical compatibilities. To address this, we employ an epitaxial model system where the crystal orientations of cathode and solid electrolyte are precisely controlled, and probe the interfaces in real-time during co-sintering by in situ electron microscopy. The interfacial reaction is highly dependent on crystal orientation/alignment, especially the availability of open ion channels. Interfaces bearing open ion paths of NCM are more susceptible to interdiffusion, but stabilize with the early formed passivation layer. Conversely, interfaces with closed ion pathway exhibit stability at intermediate temperatures, but deteriorate rapidly at high temperature due to oxygen evolution, increasing interfacial resistance. The elucidation of these distinct interfacial behaviors emphasizes the need for decoupling collective interfacial properties to enable rational design in solid-state batteries.

Background/Aims: Lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma (LELC) is a rare subtype of gastric cancer. We aimed to identify the clinicopathological features and rate of lymph node metastasis (LNM) to investigate the feasibility of endoscopic submucosal dissection for early gastric LELC confined to the mucosa or submucosa.Methods: We compared the clinicopathological characteristics of 116 early gastric LELC patients and 5,753 early gastric well- or moderately differentiated (WD or MD) tubular adenocarcinoma patients treated by gastrectomy.Results: Compared to WD or MD early gastric cancer (EGC) patients, early LELC patients were younger and had a higher prevalence of proximally located tumors. Despite more frequent deep submucosal invasion (86.2% vs 29.8%), lymphatic invasion was less frequent (6.0% vs 16.2%) in early LELC patients than in WD or MD EGC patients. Among tumors with deep submucosal invasion, the tumor size was smaller, lymphatic invasion was less frequent (6.0% vs 40.2%) and the rate of LNM was lower (10.0% vs 19.4%) in patients with LELC than in those with WD or MD EGC. The overall rate of LNM in early LELC patients was 8.6% (10/116). The risk of LNM in patients with mucosal, shallow submucosal invasive, or deep submucosal invasive LELC was 0% (0/6), 0% (0/10), and 10% (10/100), respectively.Conclusions: Early LELC is a distinct subtype of EGC with more frequent deep submucosal invasion but less lymphatic invasion and LNM than WD or MD EGCs. Endoscopic submucosal dissection may be considered curative for patients with early LELC confined to the mucosa or shallow submucosa, given its negligible rate of LNM.

Background The adequate dose of levothyroxine (LT4) for patients who have undergone total thyroidectomy (TT) for differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) is uncertain. We evaluated the LT4 dose required to achieve mild thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) suppression in DTC patients after TT. Methods The electronic medical records of patients who underwent TT for DTC and received mild TSH suppression therapy were reviewed. Linear regression analysis was performed to evaluate the association between LT4 dose (μg/kg) and an ordinal group divided by body mass index (BMI). We also evaluated the trend in LT4 doses among groups divided by BMI and age. Results In total, 123 patients achieved mild TSH suppression (0.1 to 0.5 mIU/L). Abstract Background Universal health coverage (UHC) ensures affordability of a variety of essential health services for the general population. Although UHC could mitigate the harmful effects of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on patients and their socioeconomic position, the debate on UHC’s scope and ability to improve health outcomes is ongoing. This study aimed to identify the impact of UHC policy withdrawal on the health outcomes of South Korea’s severely ill COVID-19 patients. Methods We used a propensity score matching (PSM) and difference-in-differences combined model. This study’s subjects were 44,552 hospitalized COVID-19 patients contributing towards health insurance claims data, COVID-19 notifications and vaccination data extracted from the National Health Information Database and the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency from 1 December 2020 to 30 April 2022. After PSM, 2460 patients were included. This study’s exposures were severity of illness and UHC policy change. The primary outcome was the case fatality rate (CFR) for COVID-19, which was defined as death within 30 days of a COVID-19 diagnosis. There were four secondary outcomes, including time interval between diagnosis and hospitalization (days), length of stay (days), total medical expenses (USD) and the time interval between diagnosis and death (days). Results After the UHC policy’s withdrawal, the severely ill patients’ CFR increased to 284 per 1000 patients [95% confidence interval (CI) 229.1–338.4], hospitalization days decreased to 9.61 days (95% CI −11.20 to −8.03) and total medical expenses decreased to 5702.73 USD (95% CI −7128.41 to −4202.01) compared with those who were not severely ill. Conclusions During the pandemic, UHC may have saved the lives of severely ill COVID-19 patients; therefore, expanding services and financial coverage could be a crucial strategy during public health crises.

Abstract Three-dimensional optical nanostructures have garnered significant interest in photonics due to their extraordinary capabilities to manipulate the amplitude, phase, and polarization states of light. However, achieving complex three-dimensional optical nanostructures with bottom-up fabrication has remained challenging, despite its nanoscale precision and cost-effectiveness, mainly due to inherent limitations in structural controllability. Here, we report the optical characteristics of intricate two- and three-dimensional nanoarchitectures made of colloidal quantum dots fabricated with multi-dimensional transfer printing. Our customizable fabrication platform, directed by tailored interface polarity, enables flexible geometric control over a variety of one-, two-, and three-dimensional quantum dot architectures, achieving tunable and advanced optical features. For example, we demonstrate a two-dimensional quantum dot nanomesh with tuned subwavelength square perforations designed by finite-difference time-domain calculations, achieving an 8-fold enhanced photoluminescence due to the maximized optical resonance. Furthermore, a three-dimensional quantum dot chiral structure is also created via asymmetric stacking of one-dimensional quantum dot layers, realizing a pronounced circular dichroism intensity exceeding 20°.

Abstract Atopic dermatitis (AD) presents significant therapeutic challenges due to its poorly understood etiology. Eosinophilia, a hallmark of allergic inflammation, is implicated in AD pathogenesis. Interleukin-10 (IL-10)-producing regulatory B (Breg) cells exhibit potent anti-inflammatory effects. However, their role in controlling AD-related eosinophilia is not well understood. To investigate the impact of eosinophils on AD, we employed IL-5Rα-deficient (Il5ra −/− ) mice, which lack functional eosinophils. Induction of AD in these mice resulted in attenuated disease symptoms, underscoring the critical role of eosinophils in AD development. Additionally, the adoptive transfer of purified Breg cells into mice with AD significantly alleviated disease severity. Mechanistic studies revealed that IL-10 produced by Breg cells directly inhibits eosinophil activation and infiltration into the skin. In vitro experiments further confirmed that Breg cells inhibited eosinophil peroxidase secretion in an IL-10-dependent manner. Our collective findings demonstrate that IL-10 from Breg cells alleviates AD by suppressing eosinophil activation and tissue infiltration. This study elucidates a novel regulatory mechanism of Breg cells, providing a foundation for future Breg-mediated therapeutic strategies for AD.

Abstract Background This study analyzed the genetic traits and fitness costs of vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (VREfm) blood isolates carrying Tn1546-type transposons harboring the vanA operon. Methods All E. faecium blood isolates were collected from eight general hospitals in South Korea during one-year study period. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing and vanA and vanB PCR were performed. Growth rates of E. faecium isolates were determined. The vanA-positive isolates were subjected to whole genome sequencing and conjugation experiments. Results Among 308 E. faecium isolates, 132 (42.9%) were positive for vanA. All Tn1546-type transposons harboring the vanA operon located on the plasmids, but on the chromosome in seven isolates. The plasmids harboring the vanA operon were grouped into four types; two types of circular, nonconjugative plasmids (Type A, n = 50; Type B, n = 46), and two types of putative linear, conjugative plasmids (Type C, n = 16; Type D, n = 5). Although intestinal parasites are no longer considered a significant public health concern in Korea, tissue-invading parasites continue to pose clinical challenges. The diagnosis of tissue helminthiasis by recovering worms or larvae from tissues is invasive; therefore, serodiagnosis is widely used to diagnose infections caused by tissue-invading parasites. Among the serological tests, the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) is the most commonly used, and various antigens, including crude antigens, excretory-secretory antigens of helminths, and cystic fluid of larval tapeworms, are used to detect specific IgGs against parasite antigens in the sera or cerebrospinal fluid of patients. A multi-antigen ELISA was used to diagnose four major tissue parasitic infections: clonorchiasis, paragonimiasis, cysticercosis, and sparganosis. In addition to these four parasitic infections, ELISA remains a valuable diagnostic method for toxocariasis, trichinellosis, fascioliasis, echinococcosis, and other diseases. A comprehensive history of the mode of transmission of the suspected parasites and the patient’s residence in or travel to an endemic area may help in making a definitive diagnosis. For the management of patients with eosinophilia in Korea, it is essential to perform ELISA for the differential diagnosis of toxocariasis. Serological tests have the disadvantage of being unable to differentiate between past and current infections, and the possibility of cross-reactivity requires careful interpretation. It is important to note that the results of serological tests are not necessarily conclusive and should be interpreted in the context of other symptoms, as well as clinical and imaging findings.

Purpose: To investigate the relationship between urine cytology results after overnight continuous saline irrigation (OCSI) following transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT) and bladder tumor recurrence in non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). Materials and Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on patients diagnosed with NMIBC between 2016 and 2020 after undergoing TURBT at our hospital. All patients received OCSI following TURBT and had urine cytology test at postoperative 1 day. Urine cytology was classified into three groups: Negative, low-grade urothelial neoplasm (LGUN)+atypical urothelial cells (AUC), and suspicious for high-grade urothelial carcinoma (SHGUC)+high-grade urothelial carcinoma (HGUC). Recurrence-free survival (RFS) in each group was compared using the Kaplan–Meier method. Univariable and multivariable Cox regression analyses were performed to evaluate independent prognostic factors. Results: A total of 172 patients were included in this study. Based on urine cytology group (after OCSI), RFS did not reach the median value in the Negative group. In the LGUN+AUC group, the median RFS was 615.00 days. In the SHGUC+HGUC group, the median RFS was 377.00 days. In survival analysis, the Negative group had a longer RFS than the SHGUC+HGUC group (p=0.013). However, Cox regression analysis showed that SHGUC+HGUC was not an independent prognostic factor for recurrence. Conclusions: Urine cytology results after OCSI following TURBT in NMIBC were associated with bladder tumor recurrence. Specifically, SHGUC or HGUC in urine cytology after OCSI showed earlier recurrence than negative cases. However, further research is needed to accurately determine whether it is an independent prognostic factor.

Abstract Background Preingestive behavioral modulations of herbivorous insects on the host plant are abundant over insect taxa. Those behaviors are suspected to have functions such as deactivation of host plant defenses, nutrient accumulation, or modulating plant-mediated herbivore interactions. To understand the functional consequence of behavioral modulation of insect herbivore, we studied the girdling behavior of Phytoecia rufiventris Gautier (Lamiinae; Cerambycidae) on its host plant Erigeron annuus L. (Asteraceae) that is performed before endophytic oviposition in the stem. Results The girdling behavior significantly increased the larval performance in both field monitoring and lab experiment. The upper part of the girdled stem exhibited lack of jasmonic acid induction upon larval attack, lowered protease inhibitor activity, and accumulated sugars and amino acids in compared to non-girdled stem. The girdling behavior had no effect on the larval performance of a non-girdling longhorn beetle Agapanthia amurensis, which also feeds on the stem of E. annuus during larval phase. However, the girdling behavior decreased the preference of A. amurensis females for oviposition, which enabled P. rufiventris larvae to avoid competition with A. amurensis larvae. Conclusions In conclusion, the girdling behavior modulates plant physiology and morphology to provide a modulated food source for larva and hide it from the competitor. Our study implies that the insect behavior modulations can have multiple functions, providing insights into adaptation of insect behavior in context of plant-herbivore interaction.

Fractography of stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of 20% cold worked Type 304 H stainless steel containing δ-ferrite was studied using a compact tension (CT) specimen in oxidizing primary water with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and electron back scattered diffraction (EBSD). The stress corrosion crack propagated mostly in transgranular stress corrosion cracking (TGSCC) mode and sometimes in intergranular stress corrosion cracking (IGSCC) mode. TGSCC paths were along the {111} plane with both high resolved shear stress and high resolved tensile stress. IGSCC preferentially propagated along the grain boundary perpendicular to the loading axis. The findings in this work suggest that TGSCC proceeds through formation of a weakening zone at the head of the crack tip by interaction of slip and corrosion and then cracking of the weakened zone by tensile stress.

Abstract Exposure to excess glucocorticoid (GC) during early development is implicated in adult dysfunctions. Reduced adult hippocampal neurogenesis is a well-known consequence of exposure to early life stress or elevated GC, however the effects on neurogenesis during development and effects on other brain regions are not well understood. Using an optogenetic zebrafish model, here we analyse the effects of GC exposure on neurogenesis during development in the whole brain. We identify that the hypothalamus is a highly GC-sensitive region where elevated GC causes precocious development. This is followed by failed maturation and early decline accompanied by impaired feeding, growth, and survival. In GC-exposed animals, the developmental trajectory of hypothalamic progenitor cells is strikingly altered, potentially mediated by direct regulation of transcription factors such as rx3 by GC. Our data provide cellular and molecular level insight into GC-induced alteration of the hypothalamic developmental trajectory, a process crucial for health across the life-course.

Summary: Appropriate ingestion of salt is essential for physiological processes such as ionic homeostasis and neuronal activity. Generally, low concentrations of salt elicit attraction, while high concentrations elicit aversive responses. Here, we observed that sugar neurons in the L sensilla of the Drosophila labellum cf. responses to NaCl, while sugar neurons in the S-c sensilla do not respond to NaCl, suggesting that gustatory receptor neurons involved in NaCl sensing may employ diverse molecular mechanisms. Through an RNAi screen of the entire Ir and ppk gene families and molecular genetic approaches, we identified IR76b, IR25a, and IR56b as necessary components for NaCl sensing in the Drosophila labellum. Co-expression of these three IRs in heterologous systems such as S2 cells or Xenopus oocytes resulted in a current in response to sodium stimulation, suggesting formation of a sodium-sensing complex. Our results should provide insights for research on the diverse combinations constituting salt receptor complexes.

Summary: Early life stress (ELS) is a major risk factor for developing psychiatric disorders, with glucocorticoids (GCs) implicated in mediating its effects in shaping adult phenotypes. In this process, exposure to high levels of developmental GC (hdGC) is thought to induce molecular changes that prime differential adult responses. However, identities of molecules targeted by hdGC exposure are not completely known. Here, we describe lifelong molecular consequences of hdGC exposure using a newly developed zebrafish double-hit stress model, which shows altered behaviors and stress hypersensitivity in adulthood. We identify a set of primed genes displaying altered expression only upon acute stress in hdGC-exposed adult fish brains. Interestingly, this gene set is enriched in risk factors for psychiatric disorders in humans. Lastly, we identify altered epigenetic regulatory elements following hdGC exposure. Thus, our study provides comprehensive datasets delineating potential molecular targets mediating the impact of hdGC exposure on adult responses.

Abstract Innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) play an important role in maintaining tissue homeostasis and various inflammatory responses. ILCs are typically classified into three subsets, as is the case for T-cells. Recent studies have reported that IL-10-producing type 2 ILCs (ILC210s) have an immunoregulatory function dependent on IL-10. However, the surface markers of ILC210s and the role of ILC210s in contact hypersensitivity (CHS) are largely unknown. Our study revealed that splenic ILC210s are extensively included in PD-L1highSca-1+ ILCs and that IL-27 amplifies the development of PD-L1highSca-1+ ILCs and ILC210s. Adoptive transfer of PD-L1highSca-1+ ILCs suppressed oxazolone-induced CHS in an IL-10-dependent manner Taken together, our results demonstrate that ILC210s are critical for the control of CHS and suggest that ILC210s can be used as target cells for the treatment of CHS.

Abstract Background This work aimed to identify a method to achieve improved stone targeting and safety in shockwave lithotripsy by accounting for respiration. Methods We set up an electromotive device simulating renal movement during respiration to place artificial stones within the phantom gel, measuring stone weight changes before and after shockwave exposure and the cavitation damage. We conducted clinical trials using respiratory masks and sensors to monitor and analyze patient respiration during shockwave lithotripsy. Results The in vitro efficiency of lithotripsy was higher when adjusted for respiration than when respiration was not adjusted for. Slow respiration showed the best efficiency with higher hit rates when not adjusted for respiration. Cavitation damage was also lowest during slow respiration. The clinical study included 52 patients. Respiratory regularity was maintained above 90% in regular respiration. When respiration was regular, the lithotripsy rate was about 65.6%, which stayed at about 40% when respiration was irregular. During the lithotripsy, the participants experienced various events, such as sleep, taking off their masks, talking, movement, coughing, pain, nervousness, and hyperventilation. The generation of shockwaves based on respiratory regularity could reduce pain in patients. Conclusion These results suggest a more accurate lithotripsy should be performed according to respiratory regularity.

Abstract This study aims to evaluate the safety of MK-7 produced by fermentation process using a Bacillus subtilis var. natto strain for human ingestion via acute oral toxicity, repeated dose 90-day oral toxicity, 28-day recovery test, and genotoxicity tests. The acute oral toxicity test results indicated that all subjects survived at the dose of 5000 mg/kg with no toxic effects. For the repeated dose 90-day oral toxicity test, MK-7 was administered to rats at 500, 1500, and 4500 mg/kg for 90 d. No abnormal findings were detected in clinical observations or in clinical pathological and histopathological examinations. The no-observed-adverse-effect level(NOAEL) was determined to be 4500 mg/kg/d, the maximum dose tested. For the evaluation of genotoxicity, reverse mutation, chromosomal aberration, and micronucleus tests were performed. In the reversion mutation test, vitamin K2 did not induce reversion in bacterial strains, and no chromosomal abnormality was observed in the chromosomal abnormality test using Chinese hamster lung cells. In the micronucleus test, micronuclei were not induced using ICR mouse bone marrow cells. All the toxicity test results suggest that vitamin K2 produced by fermentation processes using Bacillus subtilis var. natto induced no toxicological changes under the experimental conditions.

Background Many studies have shown that Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (HT) acts as a protective factor in differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC), but little is known about its effects on mortality. Therefore, this study was performed to reveal the prognosis of HT on mortality in patients with DTC. Methods This study included two types of research results: retrospective cohort study using the National Epidemiologic Survey of Thyroid cancer (NEST) in Korea and meta-analysis study with the NEST data and eight selected studies. Results Of the 4,398 patients with DTC in NEST, 341 patients (7.8%) died during the median follow-up period of 15 years (interquartile range, 12.3 to 15.6). Of these, 91 deaths (2.1%) were related to DTC. HT was associated with a smaller tumor size and less aggressive DTC. In Cox regression analysis after adjusting for age and sex, patients with HT showed a significantly lower risk of all-cause death (hazard ratio [HR], 0.71; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.52 to 0.96) and DTC-related death (HR, 0.33; 95% CI, 0.14 to 0.77). The analysis with inverse probability of treatment weight data adjusted for age, sex, and year of thyroid cancer registration showed similar association. The meta-analysis showed that patients with HT showed a lower risk of all-cause mortality (risk ratio [RR], 0.24; 95% CI, 0.13 to 0.47) and thyroid cancer-related mortality (RR, 0.23; 95% CI, 0.13 to 0.40) in comparison with patients without HT. Conclusion This study showed that DTC co-presenting with HT is associated with a low risk of advanced DTC and presents a low risk for all-cause and DTC-related death.

Background: This study was designed to determine changes in risk factors on the prognosis of patients during each period of the bloodstream infection (BSI) timeline. Methods: Through an integrated study of multivariable regressions with machine learning techniques, the risk factors for mortality during each period of BSI were analyzed. Results: A total of 302,303 inpatients who underwent blood cultures during 2011–2021 were enrolled. More than 8 % of BSI cases progressed to subsequent BSI, and risk factors were identified as gut colonization with vancomycin-resistant enterococci (aOR 1.82; 95 % CI 1.47–2.24), intensive care unit admission (aOR 3.37; 95 % CI 3.35–4.28), and current cancer chemotherapy (aOR 1.54; 95 % CI 1.36–1.74). The mean SOFA score of the deceased patients during the first 7 days was 10.6 (SD 4.3), which was significantly higher than those on days 8–30 (7.0 ± 4.2) and after Day 30 (4.0 ± 3.5). To simulate the verification process using materials from a decommissioned reactor, a mock-up of the bottom-mounted instrument nozzle in the Kori 1 reactor, where the nozzle was attached to a plate by J-groove dissimilar metal welding, was fabricated. The mock-up distortion was quantified by measuring the plate surface displacement after welding. The residual stresses formed on the support plate surface and the inner surface of the nozzle were then analyzed using the hole-drilling method, contour method, and neutron diffraction. Welding simulations were performed using a 3D finite element method to validate the measured results. The measured and computed stress distributions on the support plate exhibited reasonable agreement. Conversely, the stresses on the inside of the nozzle were found to have an indisputable difference in the contour method and neutron diffraction measurements, which demonstrated strong tensile and compressive hoop stresses, respectively. The possible origins of such differences were investigated and we have provided some suggestions for a precise evaluation in the simulation. This study is expected to be useful in future research on decommissioned reactors.

This study was done to investigate the effects of the incorporation of Achyranthes japonica extracts (AJE) in diet on the production parameters of growing pigs. Exp 1: Total, 105 crossbred pigs (average body weight: 24.47 ± 2.46 kg) were used in a 6-week feeding trial. Pigs (seven replicates, five pigs per pen) were allotted randomly to three treatments. Dietary treatments: CON (basal diet); basal diet with 0.025% AJE, and basal diet + 0.050% AJE). Growth performance, nutrient digestibility, fecal microbial count, and fecal noxious gas were assessed in this study. Average daily gain (ADG), average daily feed intake (ADFI), and gain to feed ratio (G:F) were not affected by the addition of up to 0.05% AJE. In the case of apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD), dry matter (DM), nitrogen (N), and digestible energy (DE) were not changed in 3rd and 6th weeks of the feeding trial through the addition of AJE up to 0.05% in the growing pig diet. In microbial count, Lactobacillus and Escherichia coli count at 3rd and 6th week was similar in all the treatment diets. The inclusion of AJE at levels up to 0.05% in growing pig diet had no effect on the production of NH3, H2S, acetic acid, and CO2 in the feces. After ending the Exp 1, a total of nine pigs were divided into three treatment groups. Treatment diets were included, TRT1, basal diet + powder quercetin 30 g; TRT2, basal diet + powder quercetin 150 g; TRT3, basal diet + powder quercetin 300g. Rate of absorption in blood was increased with the higher dose of quercetin. The results suggested incorporation of AJE up to 0.05% has no significant effect on ADG, ADFI, and G:F, as well as DM, N, and DE digestibility, fecal microbial count, and fecal noxious gas emission in growing pigs, even though no negative effect was found.

Background: Traditional culture methods are time-consuming, making it difficult to utilize the results in the early stage of urinary tract infection (UTI) management, and automated urinalyses alone show insufficient performance for diagnosing UTIs. Several models have been proposed to predict urine culture positivity based on urinalysis. However, most of them have not been externally validated or consisted solely of urinalysis data obtained using one specific commercial analyzer. Methods: A total of 259,187 patients were enrolled to develop artificial intelligence (AI) models. AI models were developed and validated for the diagnosis of UTI and urinary tract related-bloodstream infection (UT-BSI). The predictive performance of conventional urinalysis and AI algorithms were assessed by the areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC). We also visualized feature importance rankings as Shapley additive explanation bar plots. Results: In the two cohorts, the positive rates of urine culture tests were 25.2% and 30.4%, and the proportions of cases classified as UT-BSI were 1.8% and 1.6%. As a result of predicting UTI from the automated urinalysis, the AUROC were 0.745 (0.743–0.746) and 0.740 (0.737–0.743), and most AI algorithms presented excellent discriminant performance (AUROC > 0.9). In the external validation dataset, the XGBoost model achieved the best values in predicting both UTI (AUROC 0.967 [0.966–0.968]) and UT-BSI (AUROC 0.955 [0.951–0.959]). A reduced model using ten parameters was also derived. Conclusions: We found that AI models can improve the early prediction of urine culture positivity and UT-BSI by combining automated urinalysis with other clinical information. Clinical utilization of the model can reduce the risk of delayed antimicrobial therapy in patients with nonspecific symptoms of UTI and classify patients with UT-BSI who require further treatment and close monitoring.

In recent years, electric vehicles (EVs) have significantly progressed due to their environmental protection and energy-saving advantages. However, maintaining indoor thermal comfort and effective battery thermal management are critical considerations for EVs. Unlike conventional vehicles, EVs cannot use waste heat and depend on heat pump systems for winter heating and summer cooling. This research proposes a novel system to reduce the energy consumption of heat pump systems by using recirculated air while addressing the challenges of battery temperature management and maintaining safe CO2 concentrations in the cabin. The primary objectives of this research are threefold: first, to ensure passenger comfort through an integrated approach that includes cabin CO2 concentration safety; second, to recover heat from recirculated cabin air to save energy and control battery temperature; and third, to comprehensively analyze the performance of the Electric Vehicle Thermal Management System (EVTMS) using precise Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis and mathematical modeling. This study will significantly enhance the understanding of energy consumption related to CO2 concentration control; an aspect previously overlooked in the literature. It will develop a battery temperature management strategy that leverages bus exhaust heat. These contributions will aid in achieving both passenger comfort and battery stability in electric buses, providing practical insights for the design and optimization of thermal management systems for future electric buses.

Abstract Indoor photovoltaics are limited by their inherently low‐photogenerated carrier density, leading to heightened carrier recombination and adverse leakage currents compared with conventional solar cells operating under 1 sun condition. To address these problems, this work incorporates a porous insulating interlayer (Al2O3) in perovskite devices, which effectively mitigates recombination and parasitic leakage current. A systematic investigation of the relationship between shunt resistance, photocarrier generation, and recombination at different light intensities demonstrates the effectiveness of the alumina interlayer in perovskite solar cells under low‐light conditions. Moreover, the practicability of the alumina interlayer was demonstrated through its successful implementation in a large‐area perovskite solar module (PSM). With bandgap engineering, the optimized PSM achieves a remarkable power conversion efficiency of 33.5% and a record‐breaking power density of 107.3 μW cm−2 under 1000 lux illumination. These results underscore the potential of alumina interlayers in improving energy harvesting performance, particularly in low‐light indoor environments.

Abstract Hexagonal boron nitride (h‐BN) is a key ingredient for various 2D van der Waals heterostructure devices, but the exact role of h‐BN encapsulation in relation to the internal defects of 2D semiconductors remains unclear. Here, it is reported that h‐BN encapsulation greatly removes the defect‐related gap states by stabilizing the chemisorbed oxygen molecules onto the defects of monolayer WS2 crystals. Electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) combined with theoretical analysis clearly confirms that the oxygen molecules are chemisorbed onto the defects of WS2 crystals and are fixated by h‐BN encapsulation, with excluding a possibility of oxygen molecules trapped in bubbles or wrinkles formed at the interface between WS2 and h‐BN. Optical spectroscopic studies show that h‐BN encapsulation prevents the desorption of oxygen molecules over various excitation and ambient conditions, resulting in a greatly lowered and stabilized free electron density in monolayer WS2 crystals. This suppresses the exciton annihilation processes by two orders of magnitude compared to that of bare WS2. Furthermore, the valley polarization becomes robust against the various excitation and ambient conditions in the h‐BN encapsulated WS2 crystals.

Abstract The technique of plasma processing is beneficial for wafer cleaning and precision etching of integrated circuits and essential in manufacture of advanced semiconductor devices with unmatched perfection. Research on two‐dimensional (2D) materials, such as transition metal dichalcogenides(TMDs), offers a promising solution to the challenges in semiconductor miniaturization. TMDs, with their atomic layer thicknesses and silicon‐like bandgaps, can be integrated using existing plasma systems. Different 2D crystal structures, such as 1T and 2H configurations, exhibit distinctive properties. Computational approaches are also developed to provide guidelines for controlled synthesis and etching of large‐scale and high‐quality 2D materials. Plasma/gas‐surface interactions during the synthesis, etching, and phase transformation of 2D materials are explored using atomistic simulations such as density functional theory and molecular dynamics. The reaction energetics, chemical species, and associated kinetics are discovered in the simulation study. These results decipher various mechanisms of 2D materials processing at the microscopic scale and predict certain optimal process parameters. Plasma/gas‐based semiconductor technologies are crucial in electronics because they enable production of advanced semiconductors. Plasma/gas etching allows precise and selective removal of material and plasma‐enhanced chemical vapor deposition enhances chemical reactions for efficient film deposition; therefore, these processes are majorly important for harnessing 2D materials in electronic applications.

Chemosensation is important for the survival and reproduction of animals. The odorant binding proteins (OBPs) are thought to be involved in chemosensation together with chemosensory receptors. While OBPs were initially considered to deliver hydrophobic odorants to olfactory receptors in the aqueous lymph solution, recent studies suggest more complex roles in various organs. Here, we use GAL4 transgenes to systematically analyze the expression patterns of all 52 members of the Obp gene family and 3 related chemosensory protein genes in adult Drosophila, focusing on chemosensory organs such as the antenna, maxillary palp, pharynx, and labellum, and other organs such as the brain, ventral nerve cord, leg, wing, and intestine. The OBPs were observed to express in diverse organs and in multiple cell types, suggesting that these proteins can indeed carry out diverse functional roles. Also, we constructed 10 labellar-expressing Obp mutants, and obtained behavioral evidence that these OBPs may be involved in bitter sensing. The resources we constructed should be useful for future Drosophila OBP gene family research.

Objective This study aims to examine temporal trends and the association between falls and self-rated oral health (SROH) status in community-dwelling older Korean adults.Design Secondary analysis of a serial cross-sectional study.Methods We analysed biennial data from 314 846 older adults in South Korea from 2011 to 2019 using data from the Korea Community Health Survey. Self-reported fall experience data came from the injury questionnaire question, ‘Have you fallen in the past year (slipping, tripping, stumbling and falling)?’. For SROH, the participants were asked, ‘How do you feel about your oral health, such as teeth and gums, in your own opinion?’. The association between SROH and falls was examined using a weighted multivariable logistic regression model adjusted for sociodemographic characteristics, health status and behaviours, and psychological factors.Results Those who reported poor SROH had a lower declining slope than the other groups, although all groups showed a significantly decreasing trend in both men and women from 2011 to 2019 (p for trend

The cheek, a highly visible and significant aspect of an individual’s appearance, is situated adjacent to several structures involved in facial expressions, including the eye, mouth, and surrounding facial muscles. Consequently, aesthetic reconstruction for large cutaneous defects of the cheek remains a challenge for plastic surgeons. We experienced a case of an 83-year-old woman with a large (7×10 cm) facial defect following the removal of squamous cell carcinoma. We elevated a cervicofacial skin flap containing the superficial layer of the superficial musculoaponeurotic system and a blood supply via the dermal plexus in a random pattern. Through this method, we achieved aesthetically favorable reconstruction of a large facial defect using a cervicofacial transposition skin flap. By avoiding extensive dissection, we achieved adequate coverage for even a quite sizable facial defect, with a short recovery time. This method prevented facial nerve injury and made it possible to simultaneously obtain an aesthetically favorable outcome.

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a high-demand chemical, valued as a powerful and eco-friendly oxidant for various industrial applications. The traditional industrial method for producing H2O2, known as the anthraquinone process, is both costly and environmentally problematic. Electrochemical synthesis, which produces H2O2 using electricity, offers a sustainable alternative, particularly suited for small-scale, continuous on-site H2O2 generation due to the portability of electrocatalytic devices. For efficient H2O2 electrosynthesis, electrocatalysts must exhibit high selectivity, activity, and stability for the two-electron pathway-oxygen reduction reaction (2e− ORR). Transition-metal chalcogenide (TMC)-based materials have emerged as promising candidates for effective 2e− ORR due to their high activity in acidic environments and the abundance of their constituent elements. This review examines the potential of TMC-based catalysts in H2O2 electrosynthesis, categorizing them into noble-metal and non-noble-metal chalcogenides. It underscores the importance of achieving high selectivity, activity, and stability in 2e− ORR. By reviewing recent advancements and identifying key challenges, this review provides valuable insights into the development of TMC-based electrocatalysts for sustainable H2O2 production.

With advances in technology, diagnostic techniques have become more sophisticated and efficient at detecting biomarkers rapidly. Biomarkers such as microRNA (miRNA), which exhibit exceptional specificity and sensitivity compared with other biomarkers, have garnered particular interest. Composed of 21–24 nucleotides, miRNAs constitute a noncoding RNA group that regulates gene expression, immune system activation, apoptosis, and other cellular processes; hence, they are frequently used as biomarkers for various diseases. This has sparked significant interest regarding the identification of the specific miRNAs implicated in many diseases. Presently, miRNA detection methods include northern blots, reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction, and next-generation sequencing. While these methods are all sensitive, they are time-consuming, complex, and expensive, which renders them unsuitable for on-site detection. Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) can overcome these limitations to enable the sensitive and rapid detection of miRNA. This technique amplifies Raman signals, with signal enhancement levels changing sensitively depending on the distance between the target molecule and substrate. Therefore, this review covers the principle of SERS as a method for detecting miRNAs using nanomaterials, along with examples of nanomaterials and SERS applications. Based on the available literature, SERS is anticipated to enable the convenient, early diagnosis of various diseases, potentially lowering mortality rates. This review could therefore contribute significantly to the advancement of medical and diagnostic technologies.

The subcritical water extraction of Undaria pinnatifida (blade, sporophyll, and root) was evaluated to determine its chemical properties and biological activities. The extraction was conducted at 180 °C and 3 MPa. Root extracts exhibited the highest phenolic content (43.32 ± 0.19 mg phloroglucinol/g) and flavonoid content (31.54 ± 1.63 mg quercetin/g). Sporophyll extracts had the highest total sugar, reducing sugar, and protein content, with 97.35 ± 4.23 mg glucose/g, 56.44 ± 3.10 mg glucose/g, and 84.93 ± 2.82 mg bovine serum albumin (BSA)/g, respectively. The sporophyll contained the highest fucose (41.99%) and mannose (10.37%), whereas the blade had the highest galactose (48.57%) and glucose (17.27%) content. Sporophyll had the highest sulfate content (7.76%). Key compounds included sorbitol, glycerol, L-fucose, and palmitic acid. Root extracts contained the highest antioxidant activity, with IC50 values of 1.51 mg/mL (DPPH), 3.31 mg/mL (ABTS+), and 2.23 mg/mL (FRAP). The root extract exhibited significant α-glucosidase inhibitory activity with an IC50 of 5.07 mg/mL, indicating strong antidiabetic potential. The blade extract showed notable antihypertensive activity with an IC50 of 0.62 mg/mL. Hence, subcritical water extraction to obtain bioactive compounds from U. pinnatifida, supporting their use in functional foods, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals is highlighted. This study uniquely demonstrates the variation in bioactive compound composition and bioactivities across different parts of U. pinnatifida, providing deeper insights. Significant correlations between chemical properties and biological activities emphasize the use of U. pinnatifida extracts for chronic conditions.

Background: Vision-based pulmonary diagnostics present a unique approach for tracking and measuring natural breathing behaviors through remote imaging. While many existing methods correlate chest and diaphragm movements to respiratory behavior, we look at how the direct visualization of thermal CO2 exhale flow patterns can be tracked to directly measure expiratory flow. Methods: In this work, we present a novel method for isolating and extracting turbulent exhale flow signals from thermal image sequences through flow-field prediction and optical flow measurement. The objective of this work is to introduce a respiratory diagnostic tool that can be used to capture and quantify natural breathing, to identify and measure respiratory metrics such as breathing rate, flow, and volume. One of the primary contributions of this work is a method for capturing and measuring natural exhale behaviors that describe individualized pulmonary traits. By monitoring subtle individualized respiratory traits, we can perform secondary analysis to identify unique personalized signatures and abnormalities to gain insight into pulmonary function. In our study, we perform data acquisition within a clinical setting to train an inference model (FieldNet) that predicts flow-fields to quantify observed exhale behaviors over time. Results: Expiratory flow measurements capturing individualized flow signatures from our initial cohort demonstrate how the proposed flow field model can be used to isolate and analyze turbulent exhale behaviors and measure anomalous behavior. Conclusions: Our results illustrate that detailed spatial flow analysis can contribute to unique signatures for identifying patient specific natural breathing behaviors and abnormality detection. This provides the first-step towards a non-contact respiratory technology that directly captures effort-independent behaviors based on the direct measurement of imaged CO2 exhaled airflow patterns.

The quinoline alkaloid 2-(quinoline-8-carboxamido)benzoic acid (2-QBA), which is isolated from Aspergillus sp. SCSIO06786, a deep sea-derived fungus, has been suggested as a therapeutic candidate for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. We developed an analytical method for 2-QBA using a liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) in mouse plasma, in which a protein precipitation method for the sample preparation of 2-QBA in mouse plasma was used due to its simplicity and good extraction recovery rates (80.49–97.56%). The linearity of the calibration standard sample, inter- and intraday precision and accuracy, and stability of three quality control samples were suitable based on the assessment criteria and the lower limit of quantification (LLOQ) of the 2-QBA was 1 ng/mL. A pharmacokinetic study of 2-QBA was performed in mice divided into oral (2.0, 5.0, and 15 mg/kg) and intravenous (0.5 and 1.0 mg/kg) administration groups. The absolute oral bioavailability (BA) range of 2-QBA was calculated as 68.3–83.7%. Secondary peaks were observed at approximately 4–8 h after the oral administration of 2-QBA at all doses. The elimination half-life of the orally administered 2-QBA was significantly longer than that of the intravenous 2-QBA. In addition, glucuronide metabolites of 2-QBA were identified. They were transformed into 2-QBA using the β-glucuronidase treatment. Furthermore, the 2-QBA was readily absorbed from the jejunum to lower ileum. Taken together, the secondary peaks could be explained by the enterohepatic circulation of 2-QBA. In conclusion, the reabsorption of orally administered 2-QBA could contribute to the high oral BA of 2-QBA and could be beneficial for the efficacy of 2-QBA. Moreover, the simple and validated analytical method for 2-QBA using LC-MS/MS was applied to the pharmacokinetic study and BA assessments of 2-QBA in mice and would be helpful for subsequent pharmacokinetic studies, as well as for evaluations of the toxicokinetics and pharmacokinetic–pharmacodynamic correlation of 2-QBA to assess its potential as a drug.

Background: Data on the durability of booster dose immunity of COVID-19 vaccines are relatively limited. Methods: Immunogenicity was evaluated for up to 9–12 months after the third dose of vaccination in 94 healthy adults. Results: Following the third dose, the anti-spike immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibody response against the wild-type was boosted markedly, which decreased gradually over time. However, even 9–12 months after the booster dose, both the median and geometric mean of anti-spike IgG antibody levels were higher than those measured 4 weeks after the second dose. Breakthrough infection during the Omicron-dominant period boosted neutralizing antibody titers against Omicron sublineages (BA.1 and BA.5) and the ancestral strain. T-cell immune response was efficiently induced and maintained during the study period. Conclusions: mRNA vaccine booster dose elicited durable humoral immunity for up to 1 year after the third dose and T-cell immunity was sustained during the study period, supporting an annual COVID-19 vaccination strategy.

Purpose: To quantify interobserver variation (IOV) in target volume and organs-at-risk (OAR) contouring across 31 institutions in breast cancer cases and to explore the clinical utility of deep learning (DL)-based auto-contouring in reducing potential IOV. Methods and materials: In phase 1, two breast cancer cases were randomly selected and distributed to multiple institutions for contouring six clinical target volumes (CTVs) and eight OAR. In Phase 2, auto-contour sets were generated using a previously published DL Breast segmentation model and were made available for all participants. The difference in IOV of submitted contours in phases 1 and 2 was investigated quantitatively using the Dice similarity coefficient (DSC) and Hausdorff distance (HD). The qualitative analysis involved using contour heat maps to visualize the extent and location of these variations and the required modification. Results: Over 800 pairwise comparisons were analysed for each structure in each case. Quantitative phase 2 metrics showed significant improvement in the mean DSC (from 0.69 to 0.77) and HD (from 34.9 to 17.9 mm). Quantitative analysis showed increased interobserver agreement in phase 2, specifically for CTV structures (5–19 %), leading to fewer manual adjustments. Underlying IOV differences causes were reported using a questionnaire and hierarchical clustering analysis based on the volume of CTVs. Conclusion: DL-based auto-contours improved the contour agreement for OARs and CTVs significantly, both qualitatively and quantitatively, suggesting its potential role in minimizing radiation therapy protocol deviation.

People of low socioeconomic status are vulnerable to health problems during disasters such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Using data from the 2019 and 2021 Korea Community Health Survey, this study analyzed the associations between Korean adults' mental health and their national and regional-level household incomes during the pandemic. The prevalence of perceived stress and depression experience for each risk factor category was calculated through univariate analyses. A multivariate logistic regression analysis helped identify the association between two types of income levels (national or regional) and perceived stress and experience of depression. Additionally, we investigated the effect of income levels by subgroup (gender and residential area) on perceived stress and the experience of depression. During the pandemic, the crude prevalence of an experience of depression was higher (6.24% to 7.2%) but that of perceived stress remained unchanged. Regarding regional-income based mental health disparities, even after adjusting for each independent variable, perceived stress (2019 odds ratio (OR): 1.26, 95% confidence interval (CI):1.26-1.27, 2021 OR: 1.32, 95% CI: 1.32-1.32) and experience of depression (2019 OR: 1.56, 95% CI: 1.55-1.56, 2021 OR: 1.63, 95% CI: 1.63-1.64) increased as the income level decreased. The perceived stress based on the two income levels was higher in women than in men. For both income levels, the experience of depression of women was higher than that of men before COVID-19 and vice versa during the COVID-19 period. National income had a more pronounced effect on mental health in urban areas than in rural areas. Contrarily, the effect of regional income level on mental health was not consistent across residential areas (urban and rural areas). Our findings demonstrated that mental health disparities based on income level were more likely to occur during the COVID-19 pandemic and are better reflected through disparities in regional income levels.

Background and purpose: Objective assessment of delivered radiotherapy (RT) to thoracic organs requires fast and accurate deformable dose mapping. The aim of this study was to implement and evaluate an artificial intelligence (AI) deformable image registration (DIR) and organ segmentation-based AI dose mapping (AIDA) applied to the esophagus and the heart. Materials and methods: AIDA metrics were calculated for 72 locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer patients treated with concurrent chemo-RT to 60 Gy in 2 Gy fractions in an automated pipeline. The pipeline steps were: (i) automated rigid alignment and cropping of planning CT to week 1 and week 2 cone-beam CT (CBCT) field-of-views, (ii) AI segmentation on CBCTs, and (iii) AI-DIR-based dose mapping to compute dose metrics. AIDA dose metrics were compared to the planned dose and manual contour dose mapping (manual DA). Results: AIDA required ∼2 min/patient. Esophagus and heart segmentations were generated with a mean Dice similarity coefficient (DSC) of 0.80±0.15 and 0.94±0.05, a Hausdorff distance at 95th percentile (HD95) of 3.9±3.4 mm and 14.1±8.3 mm, respectively. AIDA heart dose was significantly lower than the planned heart dose (p = 0.04). Larger dose deviations (>=1Gy) were more frequently observed between AIDA and the planned dose (N = 26) than with manual DA (N = 6). Conclusions: Rapid estimation of RT dose to thoracic tissues from CBCT is feasible with AIDA. AIDA-derived metrics and segmentations were similar to manual DA, thus motivating the use of AIDA for RT applications.

Abstract Background Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is an infectious disease caused by the Dabie bandavirus, [or SFTS virus (SFTSV)] that has become increasingly widespread since it was first reported in 2009. The SFTSV comprises three essential single-stranded RNA gene segments, with the S segment encoding the nucleocapsid (N) protein. Since the N protein is the most abundant and stable viral protein, it is a useful diagnostic marker of infection. Various SFTSV N-protein-based detection methods have been developed. However, given the limited research on antibodies of an SFTSV N-protein, here we report the characterization of the antibodies against SFTSV N protein especially their mapping results which is essential for more efficient and optimized detection of SFTSV. Methods To generate SFTSV-N-protein-specific monoclonal antibodies, recombinant full-length SFTSV N protein was expressed in E. coli, and the purified N protein was immunized to mice. The binding epitope positions of the antibodies generated were identified through binding-domain mapping. An antibody pair test using a lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) was performed to identify effective diagnostic combinations of paired antibodies. Results Nine monoclonal antibodies specific for the SFTSV N protein were generated. Antibodies #3(B4E2) and #5(B4D9) were specific for sequential epitopes, while the remainder were specific for conformational epitopes. Antibody #4(C2G1) showed the highest affinity for the SFTSV N protein. The binding domain mapping results indicated the binding regions of the antibodies were divided into three groups. The antibody pair test demonstrated that #3(B4E2)/#4(C2G1) and #4(C2G1)/#5(B4D9) were effective antibody pairs for SFTSV diagnosis. Conclusions Effective virus detection requires at least two strong antibodies recognizing separate epitope binding sites of the virus antigen. Here, we generated SFTSV-N-protein-specific monoclonal antibodies and subsequently performed epitope mapping and an antibody pair test to enhance the diagnostic efficiency and accuracy of SFTSV. Confirmation of epitope mappings and their combination immune response to the N protein provide valuable information for effective detection of SFTSV as well as can respond actively to detect a variant SFTSV.

Population growth and climate change are currently the two greatest threats to food security in the Sahel region of Africa. The population of the countries that make up the Sahel is projected to nearly double by 2050, from 506 million to 912 million. Paired with the expected rise in temperature and increased frequency of extreme climatic events, these numbers could quickly overwhelm relief efforts. Strengthening human capital and economic stability are critical to prevent catastrophic suffering. This article recommends two evidence-based approaches that expand women’s autonomy and support their income-earning potential while building resilience to climate change. The first recommendation, would be greater investments in adolescent girls’ education and autonomy, including efforts to delay marriage and childbearing. The second calls for an improvement in the availability and quality of reproductive health services, with a special focus on voluntary family planning. These interventions can increase incomes, reproductive autonomy and gender equity which build community resilience and adaptability to climate change.
