Abstract Patients on B cell immunosuppressive treatments have been shown to have persistent infection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). In this report, a woman treated with ibrutinib for chronic lymphocytic leukemia experienced more than 40 days of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection. Unexpectedly, her peripheral blood experiments showed a normal SARS-CoV-2-specific antibody level and a relatively elevated percentage of CD19 + B cells, while an obvious decrease in the percentages of NK cells, CD4 + T cells and CD8 + T cells. Further SARS-CoV-2-specific T cell analysis in this patient indicated a significant decrease in the percentage of SARS-CoV-2-specific IFN-γ, TNF-α or IL-2 producing CD4 + T or CD8 + T cells. Most notably, ten days after the cease of ibrutinib, the PCR for SARS-CoV-2 turned negative and the reduced proportions of peripheral CD4 + T cells and CD8 + T cells recovered. Our research predicted that the depleted B-cell function therapies may play considerable role in the development of long COVID-19 and the abnormal T-cell subset distribution might be the underlying mechanism.

Abstract Background The present study aims to explore the clinical application of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) in pediatric patients with congenital upper gastrointestinal obstruction (CUGIO). Methods A total of 82 pediatric patients with CUGIO admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit in Kunming Children’s Hospital between June 2017 and June 2021 were enrolled in the present study and divided into two groups: the ERAS group (n = 46) and the control group (n = 36). The ERAS management mode was adopted in the ERAS group, and the conventional perioperative management mode was adopted in the control group. Results In the ERAS group and the control group, the time to the first postoperative bowel movement was 49.2 ± 16.6 h and 58.4 ± 18.8 h, respectively, and the time to the first postoperative feeding was 79 ± 7.1 h and 125.2 ± 8.3 h, respectively. Objectives The literature presents complex inter-relationships among individual-factors and organisational-factors and barriers to seeking mental health support after deployment. This study aims to quantify longitudinal associations between such factors and barriers to mental health support.Design A longitudinal online survey of Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) personnel collected data at 3 months post-deployment (T1), 6 months post-deployment (T2) and 1 year post-deployment (T3).Setting In 2020, as part of Canada’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, 2595 CAF personnel deployed on Operation LASER to support civilian long-term care facilities in Québec and Ontario.Participants All Operation LASER personnel were invited to participate: 1088, 582 and 497 responded at T1, T2 and T3, respectively. Most respondents were young, male, non-commissioned members.Main outcome measures Barriers to mental health support were measured using 25 self-reported items and grouped into theory-based factors, including eight factors exploring care-seeking capabilities, opportunities and motivations; and two factors exploring moral issues. Logistic regressions estimated the crude and adjusted associations of individual and organisational characteristics (T1) with barriers (T2 and T3).Results When adjusting for sex, military rank and mental health status, increased meaningfulness of deployment was associated with lower probability of endorsing barriers related to conflicts with career goals and moral discomfort in accessing support at T2. Higher scores in trust in leadership were associated with lower probability of endorsing four barriers at T2, and five barriers at T3.Conclusions We identified several modifiable organisational-level characteristics that may help reduce perceived barriers to mental health support in military and other high-risk occupational populations. Results suggest that promoting individuals’ sense of purpose, instilling trust in leadership and promoting relatedness among team members may improve perceptions of access to mental health supports in the months following a domestic deployment or comparable occupational exposure.

Background: Mycoplasma hominis (M. hominis) commonly colonizes the genitourinary tract of adult women and may result in neonatal meningitis through vertical transmission. Although there are few case reports, if the treatment is not conducted timely, the disease progresses rapidly, which may lead to serious complications and a poor prognosis. Case presentation: In the present study, a 10-day-old full-term neonate who presented with fever as the initial symptom and was eventually diagnosed with meningitis caused by M. hominis was reported. In the present case, the pathogen was not detected during the initial routine investigations, and the therapeutic effects of empiric antibiotic therapy were poor. Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) was conducted with the detection of M. hominis, and the antibiotics were adjusted to moxifloxacin combined with doxycycline. The clinical symptoms of the pediatric patient disappeared with an improvement in related laboratory results. Conclusion: It was difficult to detect M. hominis by routine bacterial culture. Therefore, M. hominis infection should be checked for in children with meningitis who had a negative result in CSF culture and poor therapeutic effects of empirical medication. mNGS in CSF should be conducted as soon as possible, and sensitive antibiotics should be administered in time to reduce the incidence of complications and improve the prognosis.

Ratoon rice cultivation has expanded to improve resource use efficiency, increase economic profits, and ensure food security in China in recent years. This article reviewed the development history and research progress of ratoon rice in Anhui Province, located in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. Key cultivation technologies related to rice variety selection, planting patterns, fertilizer and water management strategies, as well as harvesting methods and stubble heights of the main crop for high-yielding ratoon rice were summarized. Particularly, we described three types of rice ratooning technologies in Anhui, including the technologies for medium-duration indica hybrid variety with the main crop harvested mechanically at high stubble height, for indica-japonica hybrid variety with the main crop harvested mechanically at medium stubble height, and for short-duration indica variety with the main crop harvested mechanically at low stubble height. Additionally, this review analyzed several challenges for the sustainable development of ratoon rice in Anhui, such as poor understanding of mechanisms underlying simultaneous improvement of high yield and high quality, the lack of rice varieties with strong ratooning ability, the yield loss from mechanical harvesting of the main crop, the unstable grain yield due to adverse weather, and the insufficient financial support for R&D. Finally, the prospects for further development of ratoon rice were proposed, including technology development and dissemination, farmers' training, and profit-boosting from premium products.

The yield of wheat in wheat–rice rotation cropping systems in the Yangtze River Plain, China, is adversely impacted by waterlogging. A raised bed planting (RBP) pattern may reduce waterlogging and increase the wheat yield after rice cultivation by improving the grain number per spike. However, the physiological basis for grain formation under RBP conditions remains poorly understood. The present study was performed over two growing seasons (2018/2019 and 2019/2020) to examine the effects of the planting pattern (i.e., RBP and flat planting (FP)) on the floret and grain formation features and leaf photosynthetic source characteristics of wheat. The results indicated that implementation of the RBP pattern improved the soil–plant nitrogen (N) supply during floret development, which facilitated balanced floret development, resulting in a 9.5% increase in the number of fertile florets per spike. Moreover, the RBP pattern delayed wheat leaf senescence and increased the photosynthetic source capacity by 13.9%, which produced more assimilates for grain filling. Delayed leaf senescence was attributed to the resultant high leaf N content and enhanced antioxidant metabolism. Correspondingly, under RBP conditions, 7.6–8.6% more grains per spike were recorded, and the grain yield was ultimately enhanced by 10.4–12.7%. These results demonstrate that the improvement of the spike differentiation process and the enhancement of the leaf photosynthetic capacity were the main reasons for the increased grain number per spike of wheat under the RBP pattern, and additional improvements in this technique should be achievable through further investigation.

Abstract Background With the recent shift in focus to addressing HIV risk within relationships and couple-based interventions to prevent HIV transmission, successful recruitment of individuals involved in HIV-serodiscordant relationships is crucial. This paper evaluates methods used by the Positive Plus One (PP1) study to recruit and collect data on a diverse national sample of dyads and individuals involved in current or past HIV-serodiscordant relationships, discusses the strengths and limitations of the recruitment approach, and makes recommendations to inform the interpretation of study results and the design of future studies. Methods PP1 used a multi-pronged approach to recruit adults involved in a current or past HIV-serodiscordant relationship in Canada from 2016 to 2018 to complete a survey and an interview. Upon survey completion, index (first recruited) partners were invited to recruit their primary current HIV-serodiscordant partner. We investigated participant enrollment by recruitment source, participant-, relationship-, and dyad-level sociodemographic characteristics, missing data, and correlates of participation for individuals recruited by their partners. Results We recruited 613 participants (355 HIV-positive; 258 HIV-negative) across 10 Canadian provinces, including 153 complete dyads and 307 individuals who participated alone, and representing 460 HIV-serodiscordant relationships. Climate warming affects rice growth at different phenological stages, thereby increasing rice chalkiness and protein content and reducing eating and cooking quality (ECQ). The structural and physicochemical properties of rice starch played important roles in determining rice quality. However, differences in their response to high temperature during the reproductive stage have been rarely studied. In the present study, they were evaluated and compared between two contrasting natural temperature field conditions, namely, high seasonal temperature (HST) and low seasonal temperature (LST), during the reproductive stage of rice in 2017 and 2018. Compared with LST, HST significantly deteriorated rice quality, including increased grain chalkiness, setback, consistence, and pasting temperature and reduced taste values. HST considerably reduced the total starch and increased the protein content. Likewise, HST significantly reduced the short amylopectin chains [degree of polymerization (DP) 12) and relative crystallinity. The starch structure, total starch content, and protein content explained 91.4%, 90.4%, and 89.2% of the total variations in pasting properties, taste value, and grain chalkiness degree, respectively. In conclusion, we suggested that rice quality variations were closely associated with the changes in chemical composition content (total starch and protein content) and starch structure in response to HST. These results indicated that we should improve the resistance of rice to high temperature during the reproductive stage to improve the fine structure of rice starch in further breeding and practice.

In this review, the significance of ratoon rice was introduced, and the research status and development trends of ratoon rice were also summarized. It is pointed out that mechanically harvested ratoon rice is the developing direction of future ratoon rice. On this basis, we analyzed the relationship between the yield of ratoon rice and many factors, such as variety characteristics, sowing date, water control, fertilizer, and many others. It is important to construct a comprehensive and practical evaluation system for rice regeneration that can provide a basis for high-yield cultivation of machine-harvested ratoon rice. At the same time, it is suggested that combining high-yield cultivation with the green ecological efficiency of rice can achieve better production and improve the quality of rice. Finally, some problems with ratoon rice development were put forward. An in-depth study on the rhizosphere biology and regulation techniques of ratoon rice and the effective ecological compensation mechanism increased the capacity and quality of ratoon rice. Further, the functioning of such research can enhance the planting area for ratoon rice and improve food security.

Abstract Background To investigate the clinical features of patients with Stanford type A acute aortic dissection (AAD) and analyze the risk factors affecting postoperative in-hospital mortality rate. Methods The demographic and clinical data were retrospectively collected and analyzed from 118 AAD patients admitted to the Affiliated Hospital of Hangzhou Normal University from June 2016 to April 2019. All patients underwent surgical treatment and were grouped into death and survival groups. The risk factors affecting postoperative in-hospital death were analyzed using multivariate logistic regression analysis. Results The male to female ratio in the patients was 3.8:1 and the mean age was 50.11 ± 9.91 years. The patient’s main comorbidities were hypertension (70.33%) and coronary heart disease (10.17%). The main symptoms included chest pain and back pain (72.89%). The highest incidence of complications was pericardial effusion (48.31%), followed by pleural effusion (22.88%). The mean systolic blood pressure, white blood cell count and D-dimer in the patients were over the ranges of normal people. The incidences of cardiac and renal insufficiency were 18.64% and 16.95% respectively, and the postoperative in-hospital mortality rate was 12.71%. Univariable analysis showed that age, renal insufficiency, cardiac insufficiency, D-dimer level, cardiopulmonary bypass time, operation time, blood transfusion volume and postoperative hemostasis were significant factors leading to the death (P 65, renal insufficiency, cardiopulmonary bypass time ≥ 250 min and postoperative hemostasis were independent risk factors for the death (P 65 years, renal insufficiency, cardiopulmonary bypass time ≥ 250 min and postoperative hemostasis are significantly risk factors for postoperative mortality.

Abstract Objective To identify and critically evaluate the economic evaluations examining the cost‐effectiveness of hydrophilic‐coated vs uncoated catheters for individuals with spinal cord injury. Methods We searched MEDLINE, the Excerpta Medica database (EMBASE), Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), and Emcare for studies in English and French. There were no restrictions to the year of publication. Our search strategy included the following key terms: “spinal cord injury,” “catheterization,” and “cost analysis.” Results The search identified 371 studies, of which eight studies met the inclusion criteria. Five studies observed hydrophilic‐coated catheters to be cost‐effective compared to uncoated catheters. Two studies found hydrophilic‐coated catheters to be not cost‐effective compared to uncoated catheters and one study estimated that hydrophilic‐coated catheters reduced the long‐term health‐care costs compared to uncoated catheters. Conclusion The cost‐effectiveness of hydrophilic‐coated catheters was dependent on the comparator used, the consideration of long‐term effects, and the unit cost of treatment. Further studies are needed to explore the short‐term and long‐term effects of hydrophilic‐coated catheter use on urinary tract infections and clarify the impact of hydrophilic‐coated catheter use on long‐term renal function. Overall, our critical evaluation of the literature suggests that the evidence is pointing toward hydrophilic‐coated catheters being cost‐effective, particularly when a societal perspective is applied.

Late-stage nitrogen (N) fertilization is an important crop management for improving rice production and also affects the quality of rice, whereas information on the influence of late N on structural and functional properties of indica rice starch is lacking. In this study, effects of various N rates (0, 60, and 120 kg ha−1 referred to as N0, N60 and N120, respectively) on structural and functional properties of grain starches from two rice cultivars (OM052 and Chaoyou1000) were investigated. Comparison of different N treatments showed that late N application exhibited strong influence on starch properties, and the sensitivity to N application varied with rice genotypes. Compared to non N rate, higher input of N (N60 for OM052, and N120 for Chaoyou1000) significantly reduced apparent amylose content (AAC), relative crystallinity (RC), gelatinization enthalpy, swelling power, solubility and degree of hydrolysis, but significantly increased the proportion of short chains with degree of polymerization 6–12 in amylopectin and gelatinization onset temperature. Further comparison and principal component analyses revealed that the variations in the starch functional properties were due mainly to the changes in RC. The solubility was positively associated with AAC. The present results can provide important information for understanding the environmental regulation of starch biosynthesis in rice grain.

Primary insomnia (PI) is among the most prevalent sleep-related disorders and has a far-reaching impact on daytime functioning. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) has drawn attention because of its effectiveness and safety. The purpose of the current study was to detect changes in the topological organization of whole-brain functional networks and to determine their associations with the clinical treatment effects of rTMS. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rsfMRI) data from 32 patients with PI were collected and compared with findings from 32 age- and gender-matched healthy controls (HCs). The patients were treated with Stanford accelerated intelligent neuromodulation therapy, which is a recently validated neuroscience-informed accelerated intermittent theta-burst stimulation protocol. Graph theoretical analysis was used to construct functional connectivity matrices and to extract the attribute features of small-world networks in insomnia. Scores on the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Self-Rating Anxiety Scale, Self-Rating Depression Scale, and the associations between these clinical characteristics and functional metrics, were the primary outcomes. At baseline, the patients with PI showed inefficient small-world property and aberrant functional segregation and functional integration compared with the HCs. These properties showed renormalization after individualized rTMS treatment. Furthermore, low functional connectivity between the right insula and left medial frontal gyrus correlated with improvement in ISI scores. We highlight functional network dysfunctions in PI patients and provide evidence into the pathophysiological mechanisms involved and the possible mode of action of rTMS.

Abstract The effects of global warming on crop production have received great attention in recent years. However, inconsistent results have been obtained with regard to major crops such as rice and wheat in rice–wheat rotation systems of China. Therefore, we undertook a comprehensive meta‐analysis of literature data. The yield response to warming differed for rice and wheat in the rice–wheat rotation system. Overall, warming significantly increased wheat yield (by 4.8%) but significantly reduced rice yield (by 14.8%). A number of factors were responsible for these observations. For example, rice yield responses varied with the temperature increase, variety and nitrogen (N) rate. Of these, N was the most important variable influencing yield responses to warming. The yield loss for rice was lower at temperature increases of 0.40–1.40°C and at a high N rate than that at temperature increases of 1.60–2.49°C and at a low N rate, respectively. The yield loss of indica rice was lower than that of japonica rice. For wheat, however, yield responses to warming varied with the warming regime, ambient temperature, temperature increases, and CO2 concentrations. Of these factors, ambient temperature was the most important variable influencing yield in response to warming. Warming increased wheat yield at a mean growth season temperature ≤10°C, temperature increases of 0.80–1.50°C, and at ambient CO2 concentrations. In addition, either daytime warming or nighttime warming significantly increased wheat yield. However, all‐day warming had no effect on wheat yields. We conclude that global warming will benefit wheat production but result in a serious loss of rice yield in rice–wheat rotations in China.

Mechanized production plays an important role in fulfilling food security demands during the period of labor shortage. Despite its benefits, the mechanical transplanted method (MET) has not been widely adopted due to a lack of awareness. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of the MET, the manual transplanted method (MAT), and the directed seeded method (DS) on rice yield and quality in farmers’ fields. A two-years field experiment (2016 and 2017) and a one-year survey (2020) were conducted to compare rice yield and quality among the MAT, MET, and DS methods. MET exhibited a higher-yielding population, increased biomass production, enhanced yield, and improved grain quality, compared with MAT. Moreover, japonica rice in MET (MET-JR) produced the maximum yield, 0.6 t hm−2 to 3.1 t hm−2 higher than in other treatments. However, japonica rice showed a poorer appearance quality than indica rice, as well as large panicle size (grains number per panicle ≥ 190); hybrid indica rice (HIR) also presented a high yield with poor appearance quality. These results confirmed that the application of MET could be useful in attaining high panicles per m2, high biomass production, high rice yield, and considerably improved rice quality in farmers’ fields under labor shortage circumstances. Furthermore, it is also imperative to consider balancing the yield and quality of japonica rice and large panicle HIR and employing MET at a broader scale in China, as well as other developing countries having rice–based cropping systems.

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is cultivated in a wide range of climatic conditions, thereby inducing great variations in the rice growth, yield and quality. However, the comprehensive effects of temperature and solar radiation under different ecological regions on the rice growth, yield and quality are not well understood, especially in a middle rice cropping system. The rice growth, yield- and quality-related traits were investigated under different ecological regions. Among different areas, the days before the heading stage and after the heading stage of six cultivars ranged from 80 to 120 and from 30 to 50. The gaps of the grain yield, head rice rate, chalky grain rate and chalkiness level were about 1.2–52.4%, 1.0–3.0%, 2.7–12.7% and 0.3–4.5%, respectively. This study demonstrated that in these regions, temperature is a limiting factor compared with radiation. Moreover, the rice growth, yield and quality were closely associated with daily air (DT), maximum (MaT), minimum (MiT) and effective accumulated temperatures (EAT). An excellent rice growth, a high grain yield and an excellent quality could be achieved if the EAT was higher than 1592 °C·d and the MiT was lower than 23.1 °C before the heading stage, and if the DT, MiT and MaT were lower than 25.7 °C, 22.0 °C and 30 °C after the heading stage, respectively. These findings served as an important reference for optimizing cultivar selection for a specific area and determining suitable areas for a certain variety.

Allelic variation at the Wx locus plays a vital role in regulating apparent amylose content (AAC) as well as other important starch properties in rice grain. However, the extent of Wx allelic variation affecting amylopectin fine structure and enzymatic hydrolysis properties of rice starch remains unknown. In this paper, a series of rice single-segment substitution lines with five different Wx alleles (wx, Wxt, Wxg1, Wxg2 and Wxg3) were used for comparative studies. The results showed that the five Wx alleles exhibited a wide variation in amylopectin molecular structure, hydrolysis and in vitro digestion properties of rice starch. Amylopectin chain length distribution as evaluated by fluorophore-assisted capillary electrophoresis was significantly different for the five Wx alleles, which might result in different functional properties. The hydrolysis degree of the five Wx genotype starches by α-amylase or amyloglucocidase was in the order wx > Wxt > Wxg1 > Wxg3 > Wxg2. The rapidly digestible starch (RDS) content of the tested rice starches followed the order wx = Wxg3 > Wxt = Wxg1 > Wxg2. The extent decrease of slowly digestible starch (SDS) content was wx = Wxt > Wxg1 > Wxg2 > Wxg3, while the trend in resistant starch (RS) content was Wxg2 > Wxg3 > Wxg1 > Wxt > wx. Correlation analysis indicated that AAC was significantly positively correlated with RS but significantly negatively correlated with SDS and hydrolysis. The RDS showed a significant positive correlation with amylopectin short chains (DP 6–12) but no significant correlations with other structural properties. The present results could provide important information for the application of rice starches with different Wx genotypes.

A process for reducing the nitrogen (N) application rate while maintaining sweet potato yield urgently needs to be determined. A two-year pot experiment was conducted with three N management strategies to explore the mechanism underlying yield increase caused by a split application under a reduced N rate through an investigation of the changes in the carbon (C)-N metabolism and endogenous hormone. Results revealed that, compared with conventional basal N management, split application under a reduced N rate increased storage root yield by 22.1% through improving the storage root number and mean storage root weight by 12.3% and 10.2%, respectively. During the storage root formation period, split application under a reduced N rate decreased the soil-available N (AV-N) content and N content in storage root, inducing elevated C content, C/N ratio, auxin (IAA) content, zeatin and zeatin riboside (Z + ZR) content and reduced abscisic acid (ABA) content in storage roots, promoting storage root formation. During the storage root bulking period, split application under a reduced N rate appropriately elevated the soil AV-N content and N content in the storage root which, together with increased ABA content, which enhanced C content and C/N ratio in the storage root, resulted in an improved mean storage root weight. These results will facilitate the generation of appropriate N management strategies to improve sweet potato productivity.

Objective To study the clinical features of cryptococcal meningitis (CM) and summarize its clinical manifestations, laboratory data, differential diagnosis and treatment, so as to discuss the treatment progress of CM. Methods Clinical data of 26 cases with CM were retrospectively analyzed, and the treatment experiences were summarized. Results All patients had headache and fever, and were positive for cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) latex agglutination test. Twenty-one patients' CSF smear were found Cryptococcus neoformans. Almost 76.92% (20/26) of patients were cured or became better after receiving combined treatment of amphotericin B, flucytosine and fluconazole. The symptoms and signs of 4 patients who received combined treatment of amphotericin B and voriconazole were greatly improved. Conclusions CM can prone to be misdiagnosed at early stage. CSF smear and fungi culture are beneficial to the diagnosis. Latex agglutination test is a quick and easy examination to reduce the misdiagnosis rate of CM. The combination of amphotericin B, flucytosine and fluconazole is effective for the treatment of CM. doi: 10.3969/j.issn.1672-6731.2014.08.009

White-belly and white-core are the major two types of grain chalkiness in japonica rice. This study aims to compare the morphological features of white-belly and white-core using a scanning electron microcope (SEM). A japonica rice cultivar Wuyujing3 and its mutants were used as materials. Nearly 1000 SEM images were observed, and 12 representative photos were selected. SEM images showed contrasting differences between white-belly and white-core in endosperm microstructure including the shape of endosperm cell, the size distribution of starch granules, and the amount of protein bodies. White-belly and white-core also varied markedly in morphological features of the cracked compound starch granules. Our findings should help to advance our understanding of the multi-faceted nature of grain chalkiness from the perspective of starch and protein accumulation, and should be of value for future work on rice grain chalkiness.

Familial risk plays a significant role in the etiology of schizophrenia (SZ). Many studies using neuroimaging have demonstrated structural and functional alterations in relatives of SZ patients, with significant results found in diverse brain regions involving the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), caudate, dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), and hippocampus. This study investigated whether unaffected relatives of first episode SZ differ from healthy controls (HCs) in effective connectivity measures among these regions. Forty-six unaffected first-degree relatives of first episode SZ patients — according to the DSM-IV — were studied. Fifty HCs were included for comparison. All subjects underwent resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). We used stochastic dynamic causal modeling (sDCM) to estimate the directed connections between the left ACC, right ACC, left caudate, right caudate, left DLPFC, left hippocampus, and right hippocampus. We used Bayesian parameter averaging (BPA) to characterize the differences. The BPA results showed hyperconnectivity from the left ACC to right hippocampus and hypoconnectivity from the right ACC to right hippocampus in SZ relatives compared to HCs. The pattern of anterior cingulate cortico-hippocampal connectivity in SZ relatives may be a familial feature of SZ risk, appearing to reflect familial susceptibility for SZ.

We propose a low-cost device-free mobile target tracking system using passive tags, namely, DTrack, to detect and track a human object in a certain surveillance area. The idea is that when a human object moves, he may block or reflect the RF signals between the reader and tags. Based on the estimation of Doppler Shift and Tag Read Rate variations, DTrack can detect whether a human object enters in the system and further track the moving direction of the object. DTrack uses commercial readers and off-the-shelf passive tags and is scalable and easy for large-scale deployments. Experimental results show that our system is effective in detecting the direction of moving human objects with high accuracy.

Background: Vitamin E, an essential micronutrient with antioxidant potential, can dramatically reduce the cardiovascular risk in individuals with haptoglobin (Hp) 2‐2 genotype diabetes; however, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. Objective: The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of vitamin E supplementation on high‐density lipoprotein (HDL) levels and function in individuals with diabetes stratified by Hp genotype. Methods: All relevant studies published up to May 2023 were systematically reviewed using PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Chinese Wanfang, China Science and Technology Journal, and Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure databases. Randomized controlled trials that evaluated the effects of vitamin E supplementation on HDL levels were included. The outcomes assessed were changes in HDL concentrations, cholesterol efflux, and HDL‐associated lipid peroxides. Results: In total, 163 publications were selected. Based on inclusion and exclusion selection and quality assessment, five studies with 463 participants were included. Vitamin E supplementation did not exert any effect on HDL levels in individuals with diabetes with any Hp genotype. Three of the five studies revealed that vitamin E improved cholesterol efflux and HDL lipid peroxides in individuals with Hp2‐2 diabetes but did not positively impact HDL function in Hp1 carriers. Conclusions: Although vitamin E supplementation did not significantly impact HDL levels in individuals with diabetes of any Hp genotype, it may improve HDL function in individuals with Hp2‐2 diabetes. These findings indicate a pharmacogenetic interaction between vitamin E and the Hp genotype on HDL function. Moreover, vitamin E supplementation may be an effective strategy for specific individuals with diabetes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
