The Planck All-Sky Survey to Analyze Gravitationally-lensed Extreme Starbursts (PASSAGES) project aims to identify a population of extremely luminous galaxies using the Planck All-Sky Survey and to explore the nature of their gas fuelling, induced starburst, and the resulting feedback that shape their evolution. Here, we report the identification of 22 high redshift luminous dusty star forming galaxies (DSFGs) at $z=1.1-3.3$ drawn from a candidate list constructed using the Planck Catalog of Compact Sources (PCCS) and WISE All-Sky Survey. They are confirmed through follow-up dust continuum imaging and CO spectroscopy using AzTEC and the Redshift Search Receiver (RSR) on the Large Millimeter Telescope Alfonso Serrano (LMT). Their apparent IR luminosities span $(0.1-3.1)\times 10^{14} L_\odot$ (median of $1.2\times10^{14}L_\odot$), making them some of the most luminous galaxies found so far. They are also some of the rarest objects in the sky with a source density of $\lesssim0.01$ deg$^{-2}$. Our Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) 1.1 mm continuum observations with $\theta$ $\approx$ 0.4" resolution show clear ring or arc morphologies characteristic of strong lensing. Their lensing-corrected luminosity of $L_{\rm IR}\gtrsim 10^{13}L_\odot$ ($SFR\gtrsim10^3 M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$) indicates that they are the magnified versions of the most intrinsically luminous DSFGs found at these redshifts. Our spectral energy distribution (SED) analysis finds little detectable AGN activity despite their enormous luminosity, and any AGN activity present must be extremely heavily obscured., Comment: Page count = 28. Observations of 12CO J=1-0 and HCN J=1-0 emission from NGC 5194 (M51) made with the 50~meter Large Millimeter Telescope and the SEQUOIA focal plane array are presented. Using the HCN to CO ratio, we examine the dense gas mass fraction over a range of environmental conditions within the galaxy. Within the disk, the dense gas mass fraction varies along spiral arms but the average value over all spiral arms is comparable to the mean value of interarm regions. We suggest that the near constant dense gas mass fraction throughout the disk arises from a population of density stratified, self gravitating molecular clouds and the required density threshold to detect each spectral line. The measured dense gas fraction significantly increases in the central bulge in response to the effective pressure, P_e, from the weight from the stellar and gas components. This pressure modifies the dynamical state of the molecular cloud population and possibly, the HCN emitting regions, in the central bulge from self-gravitating to diffuse configurations in which P_e is greater than the gravitational energy density of individual clouds. Diffuse molecular clouds comprise a significant fraction of the molecular gas mass in the central bulge, which may account for the measured sublinear relationships between the surface densities of the star formation rate and molecular and dense gas., 18 pages, 8 figures, 5 tables. We present a detailed study of the Planck-selected binary galaxy cluster PLCK G165.7+67.0 (G165; z = 0.348). A multiband photometric catalog is generated incorporating new imaging from the Large Binocular Telescope/Large Binocular Camera and Spitzer/IRAC to existing imaging. To cope with the different image characteristics, robust methods are applied in the extraction of the matched-aperture photometry. Photometric redshifts are estimated for 143 galaxies in the 4 arcmin2 field of overlap covered by these data. We confirm that strong-lensing effects yield 30 images of 11 background galaxies, of which we contribute new photometric redshift estimates for three image multiplicities. These constraints enable the construction of a revised lens model with a total mass of M600 kpc = (2.36 ± 0.23) × 1014 M⊙. In parallel, new spectroscopy using MMT/Binospec and archival data contributes thirteen galaxies that meet our velocity and transverse radius criteria for cluster membership. The two cluster components have a pair-wise velocity of ≲100 km s−1, favoring an orientation in the plane of the sky with a transverse velocity of 100–1700 km s−1. At the same time, the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) is offset in velocity from the systemic mean value, suggesting dynamical disturbance. New LOFAR and Very Large Array data uncover head-tail radio galaxies in the BCG and a large red galaxy in the northeast component. The 2mm Mapping Obscuration to Reionization with ALMA (MORA) Survey was designed to detect high redshift ($z\gtrsim4$), massive, dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs). Here we present two, likely high redshift sources, identified in the survey whose physical characteristics are consistent with a class of optical/near-infrared (OIR) invisible DSFGs found elsewhere in the literature. We first perform a rigorous analysis of all available photometric data to fit spectral energy distributions and estimate redshifts before deriving physical properties based on our findings. Our results suggest the two galaxies, called MORA-5 and MORA-9, represent two extremes of the "OIR-dark" class of DSFGs. MORA-5 ($z_{\rm phot}=4.3^{+1.5}_{-1.3}$) is a significantly more active starburst with a star-formation rate of 830$^{+340}_{-190}$M$_\odot$yr$^{-1}$ compared to MORA-9 ($z_{\rm phot}=4.3^{+1.3}_{-1.0}$) whose star-formation rate is a modest 200$^{+250}_{-60}$M$_\odot$yr$^{-1}$. Based on the stellar masses (M$_{\star}\approx10^{10-11}$M$_\odot$), space density ($n\sim(5\pm2)\times10^{-6}$Mpc$^{-3}$, which incorporates two other spectroscopically confirmed OIR-dark DSFGs in the MORA sample at $z=4.6$ and $z=5.9$), and gas depletion timescales ($, Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present the 3 mm wavelength spectra of 28 local galaxy merger remnants obtained with the Large Millimeter Telescope. Fifteen molecular lines from 13 different molecular species and isotopologues were identified, and 21 out of 28 sources were detected in one or more molecular lines. On average, the line ratios of the dense gas tracers, such as HCN (1-0) and HCO$^{+}$(1-0), to $^{13}$CO (1-0) are 3-4 times higher in ultra/luminous infrared galaxies (U/LIRGs) than in non-LIRGs in our sample. These high line ratios could be explained by the deficiency of $^{13}$CO and high dense gas fractions suggested by high HCN (1-0)/$^{12}$CO (1-0) ratios. We calculate the IR-to-HCN (1-0) luminosity ratio as a proxy of the dense gas star formation efficiency. There is no correlation between the IR/HCN ratio and the IR luminosity, while the IR/HCN ratio varies from source to source (1.1-6.5) $\times 10^{3}$ $L_{\odot}$/(K km s$^{-1}$ pc$^{2}$). Compared with the control sample, we find that the average IR/HCN ratio of the merger remnants is higher by a factor of 2-3 than those of the early/mid-stage mergers and non-merging LIRGs, and it is comparable to that of the late-stage mergers. The IR-to-$^{12}$CO (1-0) ratios show a similar trend to the IR/HCN ratios. These results suggest that star formation efficiency is enhanced by the merging process and maintained at high levels even after the final coalescence. We present a detailed investigation of millimeter-wave line emitters ALMA J010748.3-173028 (ALMA-J0107a) and ALMA J010747.0-173010 (ALMA-J0107b), which were serendipitously uncovered in the background of the nearby galaxy VV114 with spectral scan observations at $\lambda$ = 2 - 3 mm. Via Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) detection of CO(4-3), CO(3-2), and [CI](1-0) lines for both sources, their spectroscopic redshifts are unambiguously determined to be $z= 2.4666\pm0.0002$ and $z=2.3100\pm0.0002$, respectively. We obtain the apparent molecular gas masses $M_{\rm gas}$ of these two line emitters from [CI] line fluxes as $(11.2 \pm 3.1) \times 10^{10} M_\odot$ and $(4.2 \pm 1.2) \times 10^{10} M_\odot$, respectively. The observed CO(4-3) velocity field of ALMA-J0107a exhibits a clear velocity gradient across the CO disk, and we find that ALMA-J0107a is characterized by an inclined rotating disk with a significant turbulence, that is, a deprojected maximum rotation velocity to velocity dispersion ratio $v_{\rm max}/\sigma_{v}$ of $1.3 \pm 0.3$. We find that the dynamical mass of ALMA-J0107a within the CO-emitting disk computed from the derived kinetic parameters, $(1.1 \pm 0.2) \times 10^{10}\ M_\odot$, is an order of magnitude smaller than the molecular gas mass derived from dust continuum emission, $(3.2\pm1.6)\times10^{11}\ M_{\odot}$. We suggest this source is magnified by a gravitational lens with a magnification of $\mu \gtrsim10$, which is consistent with the measured offset from the empirical correlation between CO-line luminosity and width., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

The Large Millimeter Telescope (LMT) Alfonso Serrano is a 50m-diameter single-dish radio telescope constructed at an altitude of 4600 meters on the summit of Volcan Sierra Negra, an extinct volcano in the Mexican state of Puebla. The LMT is a bi-national scientific collaboration between Mexico and the USA, led by the Instituto Nacional de Astrofisica, Optica y Electronica (INAOE) and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. The telescope currently operates at wavelengths from 4mm to 1mm, and during the dry winter months the LMT site provides the highest levels of atmospheric transmission and potential future access to submillimeter observing windows. This paper describes the current status and scientific performance of the LMT, the suite of scientific instrumentation and future engineering upgrades that will optimize the optical efficiency of the telescope and increase its scientific productivity.

TolTEC is a three-band imaging polarimeter for the Large Millimeter Telescope. Simultaneously observing with passbands at 1.1mm, 1.4mm and 2.0mm, TolTEC has diffraction-limited beams with FWHM of 5, 7, and 11 arcsec, respectively. Over the coming decade, TolTEC will perform a combination of PI-led and Open-access Legacy Survey projects. Herein we provide an overview of the instrument and give the first quantitative measures of its performance in the lab prior to shipping to the telescope in 2021.

We present a large-scale survey of the central molecular zone (CMZ) of our Galaxy, as well as a monitoring program of Sgr A*, with the AzTEC/Large Millimeter Telescope (LMT) in the 1.1 mm continuum. Our 1.1 mm map covers the main body of the CMZ over a field of $1.6 \times 1.1$ deg$^2$ with an angular resolution of $10.5''$ and a depth of 15 mJy/beam. To account for the intensity loss due to the background removal process, we combine this map with lower resolution CSO/Bolocam and \textit{Planck}/HFI data to produce an effective full intensity 1.1 mm continuum map. With this map and existing \textit{Herschel} surveys, we have carried out a comprehensive analysis of the spectral energy distribution (SED) of dust in the CMZ. A key component of this analysis is the implementation of a model-based deconvolution approach, incorporating the Point Spread Functions (PSFs) of the different instruments, and hence recovering a significant amount of spatial information on angular scales larger than $10.5''$. The monitoring of Sgr A* was carried out as part of a worldwide, multi-wavelength campaign when the so-called G2 object was undergoing the pericenter passage around the massive black hole (MBH). Our preliminary results include 1) high-resolution maps of column density, temperature and dust spectral index across the CMZ; 2) a 1.1~mm light curve of Sgr A* showing an outburst of $140\%$ maximum amplitude on 9th May, 2014 but otherwise only stochastic variations of $10\%$ and no systematic long-term change, consistent with other observations., Comment: Accepted for publication by MNRAS

We report the detection of a non-corotating gas component in a bright unlensed submillimeter galaxy at z=4.3, COSMOS-AzTEC-1, hosting a compact starburst. ALMA 0.17 and 0.09 arcsec resolution observations of [CII] emission clearly demonstrate that the gas kinematics is characterized by an ordered rotation. After subtracting the best-fit model of a rotating disk, we kinematically identify two residual components in the channel maps. Both observing simulations and analysis of dirty images confirm that these two subcomponents are not artificially created by noise fluctuations and beam deconvolution. One of the two has a velocity offset of 200 km/s and a physical separation of 2 kpc from the primary disk and is located along the kinematic minor axis of disk rotation. We conclude that this gas component is falling into the galaxy from a direction perpendicular to the disk rotation. The accretion of such small non-corotating gas components could stimulate violent disk instability, driving radial gas inflows into the center of galaxies and leading to formation of in-situ clumps such as identified in dust continuum and CO. We require more theoretical studies on high gas fraction mergers with mass ratio of 1:>10 to verify this process., 10 pages, 8 figures. Accepted for publication in ApJ. Submillimeter bright galaxies in the early Universe are vigorously forming stars at ~1000 times higher rate than the Milky Way. A large fraction of stars is formed in the central 1 kiloparsec region, that is comparable in size to massive, quiescent galaxies found at the peak of the cosmic star formation history, and eventually the core of giant elliptical galaxies in the present-day Universe. However, the physical and kinematic properties inside a compact starburst core are poorly understood because dissecting it requires angular resolution even higher than the Hubble Space Telescope can offer. Here we report 550 parsec-resolution observations of gas and dust in the brightest unlensed submillimeter galaxy at z=4.3. We map out for the first time the spatial and kinematic structure of molecular gas inside the heavily dust-obscured core. The gas distribution is clumpy while the underlying disk is rotation-supported. Exploiting the high-quality map of molecular gas mass surface density, we find a strong evidence that the starburst disk is gravitationally unstable, implying that the self-gravity of gas overcomes the differential rotation and the internal pressure by stellar radiation feedback. The observed molecular gas would be consumed by star formation in a timescale of 100 million years, that is comparable to those in merging starburst galaxies. Our results suggest that the most extreme starburst in the early Universe originates from efficient star formation due to a gravitational instability in the central 2 kpc region., Published in Nature on August 30 2018 (submitted version)

We report the study of far-IR sizes of submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) in relation to their dust-obscured star formation rate (SFR) and active galactic nuclei (AGN) presence, determined using mid-IR photometry. We determined the millimeter-wave ($\lambda_{\rm obs}=1100 \mu$m) sizes of 69 ALMA-identified SMGs, selected with $\geq10$$\sigma$ confidence on ALMA images ($F_{\rm 1100 \mu m}=1.7$--7.4 mJy). We found that all the SMGs are located above an avoidance region in the millimeter size-flux plane, as expected by the Eddington limit for star formation. In order to understand what drives the different millimeter-wave sizes in SMGs, we investigated the relation between millimeter-wave size and AGN fraction for 25 of our SMGs at $z=1$--3. We found that the SMGs for which the mid-IR emission is dominated by star formation or AGN have extended millimeter-sizes, with respective median $R_{\rm c,e} = 1.6^{+0.34}_{-0.21}$ and 1.5$^{+0.93}_{-0.24}$ kpc. Instead, the SMGs for which the mid-IR emission corresponds to star-forming/AGN composites have more compact millimeter-wave sizes, with median $R_{\rm c,e}=1.0^{+0.20}_{-0.20}$ kpc. The relation between millimeter-wave size and AGN fraction suggests that this size may be related to the evolutionary stage of the SMG. The very compact sizes for composite star-forming/AGN systems could be explained by supermassive black holes growing rapidly during the SMG coalescing, star-formation phase., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. We present new ALMA dust continuum observations of 101 $\log(\mathrm{M}_* / \mathrm{M}_\odot)$ > 9.5 galaxies in the COSMOS field to study the effect of environment on the interstellar medium at z ~ 0.7. At this redshift, our targets span a wide range of environments allowing for a diverse sample of galaxies with densities, $\Sigma$ = 0.16-10.5 Mpc$^{-2}$ (per $\Delta$ z = 0.024). Using the ALMA observations, we calculate the total ISM mass and look for depletion as a function of galaxy density in order to understand the quenching or triggering of star formation in galaxies in different environments. ISM mass is found to have a small dependence on environment, while the depletion timescale remains constant (~200 Myrs) across all environments. We find elevated ISM mass values at intermediate densities and lower values at high densities compared to low (field) densities. Our observed evolution in gas fraction with density in this single redshift slice is equivalent to the observed evolution with cosmic time over 2-3 Gyr. To explain the change in gas mass fraction seen in galaxies in intermediate and high densities, these results suggest environmental processes such as mergers and ram pressure stripping are likely playing a role in dense filamentary-cluster environments., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present a study of 16 HI-detected galaxies found in 178 hours of observations from Epoch 1 of the COSMOS HI Large Extragalactic Survey (CHILES). We focus on two redshift ranges between 0.108, 23 pages, 12 figures, 1 interactive 3D figure, accepted to MNRAS

We report detections of two 1.2 mm continuum sources (S 1.2 mm ∼ 0.6 mJy) without any counterparts in the deep H- and/or K-band image (i.e., K-band magnitude ≳26 mag). These near-infrared-dark faint millimeter sources are uncovered by ASAGAO, a deep and wide-field (≃26 arcmin2) Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) 1.2 mm survey. One has a red IRAC (3.6 and 4.5 μm) counterpart, and the other has been independently detected at 850 and 870 μm using SCUBA2 and ALMA Band 7, respectively. Their optical-to-radio spectral energy distributions indicate that they can lie at z ≳ 3–5 and can be in the early phase of massive galaxy formation. Their contribution to the cosmic star formation rate density is estimated to be ∼1 × 10‑3 M ⊙ yr‑1 Mpc‑3 if they lie somewhere in the redshift range of z ∼ 3–5. This value can be consistent with, or greater than, that of bright submillimeter galaxies (S 870 μm > 4.2 mJy) at z ∼ 3–5. We also uncover three more candidate near-infrared-dark faint ALMA sources without any counterparts (S 1.2 mm ∼ 0.45–0.86 mJy). These results show that an unbiased ALMA survey can reveal the dust-obscured star formation activities, which were missed in previous deep optical/near-infrared surveys.

We present CO observations of 78 spiral galaxies in local merger pairs. These galaxies representa subsample of a Ks-band selected sample consisting of 88 close major-merger pairs (HKPAIRs), 44 spiral-spiral (S+S) pairs and 44 spiral-elliptical (S+E) pairs, with separation $, Accepted in A&A, 19 pages

ǫ Eridani is a nearby, young Sun-like star that hosts a ring of cool debris analogous\ud to the solar system’s Edgeworth-Kuiper belt. Early observations at (sub-)mm wave-\ud lengths gave tentative evidence of the presence of inhomogeneities in the ring, which\ud have been ascribed to the effect of a putative low eccentricity planet, orbiting close to\ud the ring. The existence of these structures have been recently challenged by high resolution interferometric millimeter observations. Here we present the deepest single-dish\ud image of ǫ Eridani at millimeter wavelengths, obtained with the Large Millimeter Tele-\ud scope Alfonso Serrano (LMT). The main goal of these LMT observations is to confirm\ud (or refute) the presence of non-axisymmetric structure in the disk. The dusty ring is\ud detected for the first time along its full projected elliptical shape. The radial extent of\ud the ring is not spatially resolved and shows no evidence, to within the uncertainties, of\ud dust density enhancements. Additional features of the 1.1 mm map are: (i) the pres-\ud ence of significant flux in the gap between the ring and the star, probably providing\ud the first exo-solar evidence of Poynting-Robertson drag, (ii) an unambiguous detection\ud of emission at the stellar position with a flux significantly above that expected from\ud ǫ Eridani’s photosphere, and (iii) the identification of numerous unresolved sources\ud which could correspond to background dusty star-forming galaxies.

We present the survey design, data reduction, construction of images, and source catalog of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) twenty-six arcmin^2 survey of GOODS-S at one-millimeter (ASAGAO). ASAGAO is a deep (1sigma ~ 61 uJy/beam for a 250 klambda-tapered map with a synthesized beam size of 0.51" x 0.45") and wide area (26 arcmin^2) survey on a contiguous field at 1.2 mm. By combining with ALMA archival data in the GOODS-South field, we obtained a deeper map in the same region (1sigma ~ 30 uJy/beam for a deep region with a 250 klambda-taper, and a synthesized beam size of 0.59" x 0.53"), providing the largest sample of sources (25 sources at >=5.0sigma, 45 sources at >=4.5sigma) among ALMA blank-field surveys to date. The number counts shows that 52(+11 -8)% of the extragalactic background light at 1.2 mm is resolved into discrete sources at S1.2m > 135 uJy. We create infrared (IR) luminosity functions (LFs) in the redshift range of z = 1-3 from the ASAGAO sources with KS-band counterparts, and constrain the faintest luminosity of the LF at 2.0 < z < 3.0. The LFs are consistent with previous results based on other ALMA and SCUBA-2 observations, which suggest a positive luminosity evolution and negative density evolution with increasing redshift. We find that obscured star-formation of sources with IR luminosities of log(L(IR)/Lsun)} ~> 11.8 account for ~~60%-90% of the z ~ 2 cosmic star-formation rate density., 19 pages, 18 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

The mm-wavelength sky reveals the initial phase of structure formation, at all spatial scales, over the entire observable history of the Universe. Over the past 20 years, advances in mm-wavelength detectors and camera systems have allowed the field to take enormous strides forward – particularly in the study of the Cosmic Microwave Background – but limitations in mapping speeds, sensitivity and resolution have plagued studies of astrophysical phenomena. In fact, limitations due to inherent biases in the ground-based mm-wavelength surveys conducted over the last 2 decades continue to motivate the need for deeper and wider-area maps made with increased angular resolution. TolTEC is a new camera that will fill the focal plane of the 50m diameter Large Millimeter Telescope (LMT) and provide simultaneous, polarization-sensitive imaging at 2.0, 1.4, and 1.1mm wavelengths. The instrument, now under construction, is a cryogenically cooled receiver housing three separate kilo-pixel arrays of Kinetic Inductance Detectors (KIDs) that are coupled to the telescope through a series of silicon lenses and dichroic splitters. TolTEC will be installed and commissioned on the LMT in early 2019 where it will become both a facility instrument and also perform a series of 100 hour “Legacy Surveys” whose data will be publicly available. The initial four surveys in this series: the Clouds to Cores Legacy Survey, the Fields in Filaments Legacy Survey, the Ultra-Deep Legacy Survey and the Large Scale Structure Survey are currently being defined in public working groups of astronomers coordinated by TolTEC Science Team members. Data collection for these surveys will begin in late 2019 with data releases planned for late 2020 and 2021. Herein we describe the instrument concept, provide performance data for key subsystems, and provide an overview of the science, schedule and plans for the initial four Legacy Survey concepts.

The Large Millimeter Telescope (LMT) Alfonso Serrano is a bi-national (Mexico and USA) telescope facility operated by the Instituto Nacional de Astrofisica, Optica y Electronica (INAOE) and the University of Massachusetts. The LMT is designed as a 50-m diameter single-dish millimeter-wavelength telescope that is optimized to conduct scientific observations at frequencies between ~70 and 350 GHz. The LMT is constructed on the summit of Sierra Negra at an altitude of 4600m in the Mexican state of Puebla. The site offers excellent mm-wavelength atmospheric transparency all-year round, and the opportunity to conduct submillimeter wavelength observations during the winter months. Following first-light observations in mid-2011, the LMT began regular scientific operations in 2014 with a shared-risk Early Science observing program using the inner 32-m diameter of the primary reflector with an active surface control system. The LMT has already performed successful VLBI observations at 3mm with the High Sensitivity Array and also at 1.3mm as part of the Event Horizon Telescope. Since early 2018 the LMT has begun full scientific operations as a 50-m diameter telescope, making the LMT 50-m the world´s largest single-dish telescope operating at 1.1mm. I will describe the current status of the telescope project, including the early scientific results from the LMT 50-m, as well the instrumentation development program, the plan to improve the overall performance of the telescope, and the on-going transition towards the formation of the LMT Observatory to support the scientific community in their use of the LMT to study the formation and evolution of structure at all cosmic epochs.

We present a study of the HI gas content of a large K-band selected sample of 88 close major-merger pairs of galaxies (H-KPAIR) which were observed by $\it Herschel$. We obtained the 21 cm HI fine-structure emission line data for a total of 70 pairs from this sample, by observing 58 pairs using the Green Bank Telescope (GBT) and retrieving the HI data for an addition 12 pairs from the literature. In this HI sample, 34 pairs are spiral-spiral (S+S) pairs, and 36 are spiral-elliptical (S+E). Based on these data, we studied the HI-to-stellar mass ratio, the HI gas fraction and the HI star formation efficiency (SFE$_{\mathrm{HI}}$ = star formation rate/$M_{\mathrm{HI}}$) and searched for differences between S+S and S+E pairs, as well as between pairs with and without signs for merger/interaction. Our results showed that the mean HI-to-stellar mass ratio of spirals in these pairs is $=7.6\pm1.0 \%$, consistent with the average HI gas fraction of spiral galaxies in general. The differences in the HI gas fraction between spirals in S+S and in S+E pairs, and between spirals in pairs with and without signs of merger/interaction are insignificant ($< 1 \sigma$). On the other hand, the mean SFE$_{\mathrm{HI}}$ of S+S pairs is $\sim4.6\times$ higher than that of S+E pairs. This difference is very significant ($\sim 4\sigma$) and is the main result of our study. There is no significant difference in the mean SFE$_{\mathrm{HI}}$ between galaxies with and without signs of merger/interaction. The mean SFE$_{\mathrm{HI}}$ of the whole pair sample is $10^{-9.55\pm 0.09}\ \mathrm{yr}^{-1}$, corresponding to a HI consumption time of $3.5\pm0.7$ Gyrs., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in ApJS. We present a 3x3 degrees, 105-pointing, high-resolution neutral hydrogen (HI) mosaic of the M81 galaxy triplet (including the galaxies M81, M82 and NGC 3077, as well as dwarf galaxy NGC 2976) obtained with the Very Large Array (VLA) C and D arrays. This uniformly covers the entire area and velocity range of the triplet with a resolution of ~20'' or ~420 pc. The data reveal many small-scale anomalous velocity features highlighting the complexity of the interacting M81 triplet. We compare our data with Green Bank Telescope (GBT) observations of the same area. This provides evidence for a substantial reservoir of low-column density gas in the northern part of the triplet, probably associated with M82. Such a reservoir is not found in the southern part. We report a number of kpc-sized low-mass HI clouds with HI masses of a few times 10^6 Msun. Their dynamical masses are much larger than their baryonic masses, which could indicate the presence of dark matter if the clouds are rotationally supported. However, due to their spatial and kinematical association with HI tidal features, it is more likely that the velocity widths indicate tidal effects or streaming motions. We do not find any clouds not associated with tidal features down to an HI mass limit of a few times 10^4 Msun. We compare the HI column densities with resolved stellar density maps and find a star formation threshold around 3-6 10^20 cm-2$. We find that extreme velocity dispersions can be explained by a superposition of multiple components along the line of sight near M81 as well as winds or outflows around M82. The velocity dispersions found are high enough that these processes could explain the linewidths of Damped-Lyman-alpha absorbers observed at high redshift., Accepted for publication in The Astronomical Journal. Measuring redshifted CO line emission is an unambiguous method for obtaining an accurate redshift and total cold gas content of optically faint, dusty starburst systems. Here, we report the first successful spectroscopic redshift determination of AzTEC J095942.9+022938 ("COSMOS AzTEC-1"), the brightest 1.1mm continuum source found in the AzTEC/JCMT survey (Scott et al. 2008), through a clear detection of the redshifted CO (4-3) and CO (5-4) lines using the Redshift Search Receiver on the Large Millimeter Telescope. The CO redshift of $z=4.3420\pm0.0004$ is confirmed by the detection of the redshifted 158 micron [C II] line using the Submillimeter Array. The new redshift and Herschel photometry yield $L_{FIR}=(1.1\pm0.1)\times 10^{13} L_\odot$ and $SFR = 1300\, M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$. Its molecular gas mass derived using the ULIRG conversion factor is $1.4\pm0.2 \times 10^{11} M_\odot$ while the total ISM mass derived from the 1.1mm dust continuum is $3.7\pm0.7 \times 10^{11} M_\odot$ assuming dust temperature of 35 K. Our dynamical mass analysis suggests that the compact gas disk ($r\approx 1.1$ kpc, inferred from dust continuum and SED analysis) has to be nearly face-on, providing a natural explanation for the uncommonly bright, compact stellar light seen by the HST. The [C II] line luminosity $L_{[C~II]} = 7.8\pm1.1 \times 10^9 L_\odot$ is remarkably high, but it is only 0.04 per cent of the total IR luminosity. AzTEC COSMOS-1 and other high redshift sources with a spatially resolved size extend the tight trend seen between [C II]/FIR ratio and $\Sigma_{FIR}$ among IR-bright galaxies reported by Diaz-Santos et al. (2013) by more than an order of magnitude, supporting the explanation that the higher intensity of the IR radiation field is responsible for the "[C II] deficiency" seen among luminous starburst galaxies., Comment: 16 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society

As an extreme kind of environment, Hickson Compact groups (HCGs) have shown to be very complex systems. HI-VLA observations revealed an intrincated network of HI tails and bridges, tracing pre-processing through extreme tidal interactions. We found HCGs to show a large HI deficiency supporting an evolutionary sequence where gas-rich groups transform via tidal interactions and ISM (interstellar medium) stripping into gas-poor systems. We detected as well a diffuse HI component in the groups, increasing with evolutionary phase, although with uncertain distribution. The complex net of detected HI as observed with the VLA seems hence so puzzling as the missing one. In this talk we revisit the existing VLA information on the HI distribution and kinematics of HCGs by means of X3D visualization. X3D constitutes a powerful tool to extract the most from HI data cubes and a mean of simplifying and easing the access to data visualization and publication via three-dimensional (3-D) diagrams.

We investigate gas contents of star-forming galaxies associated with protocluster 4C23.56 at z = 2.49 by using the redshifted CO(3-2) and 1.1 mm dust continuum with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. The observations unveil seven CO detections out of 22 targeted H$\alpha$ emitters (HAEs) and four out of 19 in 1.1 mm dust continuum. They have high stellar mass ($M_{\star}>4\times 10^{10}$ $M_{\odot}$) and exhibit a specific star-formation rate typical of main-sequence star forming galaxies at $z\sim2.5$. Different gas mass estimators from CO(3-2) and 1.1 mm yield consistent values for simultaneous detections. The gas mass ($M_{\rm gas}$) and gas fraction ($f_{\rm gas}$) are comparable to those of field galaxies, with $M_{\rm gas}=[0.3, 1.8]\times10^{11} \times (\alpha_{\rm CO}/(4.36\times A(Z)$)) M$_{\odot}$, where $\alpha_{\rm CO}$ is the CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factor and $A(Z)$ the additional correction factor for the metallicity dependence of $\alpha_{\rm CO}$, and $\langle f_{\rm gas}\rangle = 0.53 \pm 0.07$ from CO(3-2). Our measurements place a constraint on the cosmic gas density of high-$z$ protoclusters, indicating the protocluster is characterized by a gas density higher than that of the general fields by an order of magnitude. We found $\rho (H_2)\sim 5 \times 10^9 \,M_{\odot}\,{\rm Mpc^{-3}}$ with the CO(3-2) detections. The five ALMA CO detections occur in the region of highest galaxy surface density, where the density positively correlates with global star-forming efficiency (SFE) and stellar mass. We report the result from observations conducted with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) to detect [CII] 158 um fine structure line emission from galaxies embedded in one of the most spectacular Lyman-alpha blobs (LABs) at z=3.1, SSA22-LAB1. Of three dusty star-forming galaxies previously discovered by ALMA 860 um dust continuum survey toward SSA22-LAB1, we detected the [CII] line from one, LAB1-ALMA3 at z=3.0993+/-0.0004. No line emission was detected, associated with the other ALMA continuum sources or from three rest-frame UV/optical selected z_spec~3.1 galaxies within the field of view. For LAB1-ALMA3, we find relatively bright [CII] emission compared to the infrared luminosity (L_[CII]/L_[CII]) and an extremely high [CII] 158 um and [NII] 205 um emission line ratio (L_[CII]/L_[NII]>55). The relatively strong [CII] emission may be caused by abundant photodissociation regions and sub-solar metallicity, or by shock heating. The origin of the unusually strong [CII] emission could be causally related to the location within the giant LAB, although the relationship between extended Lyman-alpha emission and ISM conditions of associated galaxies is yet to be understand., 6 pages, 4 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Letters

We present ALMA cycle 0 observations of the luminous merger VV 114. One of the main goals is to investigate mechanisms of molecular line ratio enhancement. Regions with the high 12CO (1–0)/13CO (1–0) and 12CO (3–2)/12CO (1–0) is located at a central filamentary structure (∼6 kpc) in VV 114. The filament consists of the eastern nucleus and the overlap region, where the galaxy disks are colliding. We also investigate these molecular line ratios on the Kennicutt-Schmidt law. VV 114 fills a gap between the “starburst” sequence and the “normal disk” sequence, and regions with the high ratios show the high ΣSFR and ΣH2. We suggest that the high ratios in VV 114 are due to star-forming activities in the both progenitor's nuclei and the merger-induced overlap region.

We examine the effects of pre-processing across the Coma Supercluster, including 3505 galaxies over 500 sq deg, by quantifying the degree to which star-forming (SF) activity is quenched as a function of environment. We characterise environment using the complementary techniques of Voronoi Tessellation, to measure the density field, and the Minimal Spanning Tree, to define continuous structures, and so we measure SF activity as a function of local density and the type of environment (cluster, group, filament, and void), and quantify the degree to which environment contributes to quenching of SF activity. Our sample covers over two orders of magnitude in stellar mass (10^8.5 to 10^11 Msun), and consequently we trace the effects of environment on SF activity for dwarf and massive galaxies, distinguishing so-called "mass quenching" from "environment quenching". Environmentally-driven quenching of SF activity, measured relative to the void galaxies, occurs to progressively greater degrees in filaments, groups, and clusters, and this trend holds for dwarf and massive galaxies alike. A similar trend is found using g-r colours, but with a more significant disparity between galaxy mass bins driven by increased internal dust extinction in massive galaxies. The SFR distributions of massive SF galaxies have no significant environmental dependence, but the distributions for dwarf SF galaxies are found to be statistically distinct in most environments. Pre-processing plays a significant role at low redshift, as environmentally-driven galaxy evolution affects nearly half of the galaxies in the group environment, and a significant fraction of the galaxies in the more diffuse filaments. Our study underscores the need for sensitivity to dwarf galaxies to separate mass-driven from environmentally-driven effects, and the use of unbiased tracers of SF activity., 23 pages, 17 figures. The first 1.1 mm continuum survey toward the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) was performed using the AzTEC instrument installed on the ASTE 10-m telescope. This survey covered 4.5 deg$^2$ of the SMC with $1\sigma$ noise levels of $5-12$ mJy beam$^{-1}$, and 44 extended objects were identified. The 1.1 mm extended emission has good spatial correlation with $Herschel$ 160 $\mathrm{\mu m}$, indicating that the origin of the 1.1 mm extended emission is thermal emission from a cold dust component. We estimated physical properties using the 1.1 mm and filtered $Herschel$ data (100, 160, 250, 350, and 500 $\mathrm{\mu m}$). The 1.1 mm objects show dust temperatures of $17-45$ K and gas masses of $4\times10^3-3\times10^5~M_\odot$, assuming single-temperature thermal emission from the cold dust with an emissivity index, $\beta$, of 1.2 and a gas-to-dust ratio of 1000. These physical properties are very similar to those of giant molecular clouds (GMCs) in our galaxy and the Large Magellanic Cloud. The 1.1 mm objects also displayed good spatial correlation with the $Spitzer$ 24 $\mathrm{\mu m}$ and CO emission, suggesting that the 1.1 mm objects trace the dense gas regions as sites of massive star formation. The dust temperature of the 1.1 mm objects also demonstrated good correlation with the 24 $\mathrm{\mu m}$ flux connected to massive star formation. This supports the hypothesis that the heating source of the cold dust is mainly local star-formation activity in the 1.1 mm objects. The classification of the 1.1 mm objects based on the existence of star-formation activity reveals the differences in the dust temperature, gas mass, and radius, which reflects the evolution sequence of GMCs., Comment: 26 pages, 13 figures. We present the first results from the deep and wide 5 GHz radio observations of the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS)-North ($\sigma=3.5 \; \mu Jy \; beam^{-1}$, synthesized beam size $\theta =$ 1.47 arcsec $\times$ 1.42 arcsec, and 52 sources over 109 arcmin$^{2}$) and GOODS-South ($\sigma=3.0 \; \mu Jy \; beam^{-1}$, $\theta=$0.98 arcsec $\times$ 0.45 arcsec, and 88 sources over 190 arcmin$^{2}$) fields using the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array. We derive radio spectral indices {\alpha} between 1.4 and 5 GHz using the beam-matched images and show that the overall spectral index distribution is broad even when the measured noise and flux bias are considered. We also find a clustering of faint radio sources around $\alpha=0.8$, but only within $S_{5GHz} < 150 \; \mu Jy$. We demonstrate that the correct radio spectral index is important for deriving accurate rest frame radio power and analyzing the radio-FIR correlation, and adopting a single value of $\alpha=0.8$ leads to a significant scatter and a strong bias in the analysis of the radio-FIR correlation, resulting from the broad and asymmetric spectral index distribution. When characterized by specific star formation rates, the starburst population (58%) dominates the 5 GHz radio source population, and the quiescent galaxy population (30%) follows a distinct trend in spectral index distribution and the radio-FIR correlation. We present results from a deep 2'x3' (comoving scale of 3.7 Mpc x 5.5 Mpc at z=3) survey at 1.1 mm taken with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in the SSA22 field. We observe the core region of a z = 3.09 protocluster, achieving a typical rms sensitivity of 60 micro-Jy/beam at a spatial resolution of 0".7. We detect 18 robust ALMA sources at a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) > 5. Comparison between the ALMA map and a 1.1 mm map taken with the AzTEC camera on the Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment (ASTE) indicates that three submillimeter sources discovered by the AzTEC/ASTE survey are resolved into eight individual submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) by ALMA. At least ten of our 18 ALMA SMGs have spectroscopic redshifts of z = 3.09, placing them in the protocluster. This shows that a number of dusty starburst galaxies are forming simultaneously in the core of the protocluster. The nine brightest ALMA SMGs with SNR > 10 have a median intrinsic angular size of 0".32+0".13-0".06 (2.4+1.0-0.4 physical kpc at z = 3.09), which is consistent with previous size measurements of SMGs in other fields. As expected the source counts show a possible excess compared to the counts in the general fields at S_1.1mm >= 1.0 mJy due to the protocluster. We report the detection of two CH$_3$OH lines (J$_K$ = 2$_K$-1$_K$ and 3$_K$-2$_K$) between the progenitor's disks ("Overlap") of the mid-stage merging galaxy VV 114 obtained using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) Band 3 and Band 4. The detected CH$_3$OH emission show an extended filamentary structure (~ 3 kpc) across the progenitor's disks with relatively large velocity width (FWZI ~ 150 km/s). The emission is only significant in the "overlap" and not detected in the two merging nuclei. Assuming optically-thin emission and local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE), we found the CH$_3$OH column density relative to H$_2$ ($X_{\rm CH_3OH}$) peaks at the "Overlap" (~ 8 $\times$ 10$^{-9}$), which is almost an order of magnitude larger than that at the eastern nucleus. We suggest that kpc-scale shocks driven by galaxy-galaxy collision may play an important role to enhance the CH$_3$OH abundance at the "Overlap". This scenario is consistent with that shock-induced large velocity dispersion components of ionized gas have been detected in optical wavelength at the same region. Conversely, low $X_{\rm CH_3OH}$ at the nuclear regions might be attributed to the strong photodissociation by nuclear starbursts and/or putative active galactic nucleus (AGN), or inefficient production of CH$_3$OH on dust grains due to initial high temperature conditions (i.e., desorption of the precursor molecule, CO, into gas-phase before forming CH$_3$OH on dust grains). Our current understanding of galaxy evolution still has many uncertainties associated with the details of accretion, processing, and removal of gas across cosmic time. The next generation of radio telescopes will image the neutral hydrogen (HI) in galaxies over large volumes at high redshifts, which will provide key insights into these processes. We are conducting the COSMOS HI Large Extragalactic Survey (CHILES) with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array, which is the first survey to simultaneously observe HI from z=0 to z~0.5. Here, we report the highest redshift HI 21-cm detection in emission to date of the luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG) COSMOS J100054.83+023126.2 at z=0.376 with the first 178 hours of CHILES data. The total HI mass is $(2.9\pm1.0)\times10^{10}~M_\odot$, and the spatial distribution is asymmetric and extends beyond the galaxy. While optically the galaxy looks undisturbed, the HI distribution suggests an interaction with candidate a candidate companion. In addition, we present follow-up Large Millimeter Telescope CO observations that show it is rich in molecular hydrogen, with a range of possible masses of $(1.8-9.9)\times10^{10}~M_\odot$. In a hierarchical Universe clusters grow via the accretion of galaxies from the field, groups and even other clusters. As this happens, galaxies can lose their gas reservoirs via different mechanisms, eventually quenching their star-formation. We explore the diverse environmental histories of galaxies through a multi-wavelength study of the combined effect of ram-pressure stripping and group "processing" in Abell 963, a massive growing cluster at $z=0.2$ from the Blind Ultra Deep HI Environmental Survey (BUDHIES). We incorporate hundreds of new optical redshifts (giving a total of 566 cluster members), as well as Subaru and XMM-Newton data from LoCuSS, to identify substructures and evaluate galaxy morphology, star-formation activity, and HI content (via HI deficiencies and stacking) out to $3\times R_{200}$. We find that Abell 963 is being fed by at least 7 groups, that contribute to the large number of passive galaxies outside the cluster core. More massive groups have a higher fraction of passive and HI-poor galaxies, while low-mass groups host younger (often interacting) galaxies. For cluster galaxies not associated with groups we corroborate our previous finding that HI gas (if any) is significantly stripped via ram-pressure during their first passage through the intra-cluster medium, and find mild evidence for a starburst associated with this event. In addition, we find an overabundance of morphologically peculiar and/or star-forming galaxies near the cluster core. We speculate that these arise as groups pass through the cluster (post-processing). We present 8.5 arcsec resolution 1.1mm continuum imaging and CO spectroscopic redshift measurements of eight extremely bright submillimetre galaxies identified from the Planck and Herschel surveys, taken with the Large Millimeter Telescope's AzTEC and Redshift Search Receiver instruments. We compiled a candidate list of high redshift galaxies by cross-correlating the Planck Surveyor mission's highest frequency channel (857 GHz, FWHM = 4.5 arcmin) with the archival Herschel Spectral and Photometric Imaging Receiver (SPIRE) imaging data, and requiring the presence of a unique, single Herschel counterpart within the 150 arcsec search radius of the Planck source positions with 350 micron flux density larger than 100 mJy, excluding known blazars and foreground galaxies. All eight candidate objects observed are detected in 1.1mm continuum by AzTEC bolometer camera, and at least one CO line is detected in all cases with a spectroscopic redshift between 1.3 < z(CO) < 3.3. Their infrared spectral energy distributions mapped using the Herschel and AzTEC photometry are consistent with cold dust emission with characteristic temperature between $T_d$ = 43 K and 84 K. With apparent infrared luminosity of up to L(IR) = $3\times10^{14} ��^{-1} L_\odot$, they are some of the most luminous galaxies ever found (with yet unknown gravitational magnification factor $��$). The analysis of their spectral energy distributions (SEDs) suggests that star formation is powering the bulk of their extremely large IR luminosities. Derived molecular gas masses of $M_{H2}=(0.6-7.8)\times 10^{11} M_\odot$ (for $��$~10) also make them some of the most gas-rich high redshift galaxies ever detected., 17 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society

We report 1.1 mm number counts revealed with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Survey Field (SXDF). The advent of ALMA enables us to reveal millimeter-wavelength number counts down to the faint end without source confusion. However, previous studies are based on the ensemble of serendipitously-detected sources in fields originally targeting different sources and could be biased due to the clustering of sources around the targets. We derive number counts in the flux range of 0.2-2 mJy by using 23 (>=4sigma) sources detected in a continuous 2.0 arcmin$^2$ area of the SXDF. The number counts are consistent with previous results within errors, suggesting that the counts derived from serendipitously-detected sources are not significantly biased, although there could be field-to-field variation due to the small survey area. By using the best-fit function of the number counts, we find that ~40% of the extragalactic background light at 1.1 mm is resolved at S(1.1mm) > 0.2 mJy., 8 pages, 7 figures, Accepted for publication in PASJ

We present Herschel PACS $\&$ SPIRE far-infrared (FIR) and sub-mm imaging observations for a large K-band selected sample of 88 close major-merger pairs of galaxies (H-KPAIRs) in 6 photometric bands (70, 100, 160, 250, 350, and 500 $��m$). Among 132 spiral galaxies in the 44 spiral-spiral (S$+$S) pairs and 44 spiral-elliptical (S$+$E) pairs, 113 are detected in at least one Herschel band. Star formation rate (SFR) and dust mass ($M_{\rm dust}$) are derived from the IR SED fitting. Mass of total gas ($M_{\rm gas}$) is estimated by assuming a constant dust-to-gas mass ratio of 0.01. Star forming spiral galaxies (SFGs) in S$+$S pairs show significant enhancements in both specific star formation rate (sSFR) and star formation efficiency (SFE), while having nearly the same gas mass, compared to control galaxies. On the other hand, for SFGs in S$+$E pairs, there is no significant sSFR enhancement and the mean SFE enhancement is significantly lower than that of SFGs in S$+$S pairs. This suggests an important role for the disc-disc collision in the interaction induced star formation. The $M_{\rm gas}$ of SFGs in S$+$E pairs is marginally lower than that of their counterparts in both S$+$S pairs and the control sample. Paired galaxies with and without interaction signs do not differ significantly in their mean sSFR and SFE. As found in previous works, this much larger sample confirms the primary and secondary spirals in S+S pairs follow a Holmberg effect correlation on sSFR., 21 pages, 14 figures, 5 tables. The central structure in three of the brightest unlensed z=3-4 submillimeter galaxies are investigated through 0.015" - 0.05" (120 -- 360~pc) 860 micron continuum images obtained using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). The distribution in the central kpc in AzTEC1 and AzTEC8 are extremely complex, and they are composed of multiple ~200 pc clumps. AzTEC4 consists of two sources that are separated by ~1.5 kpc, indicating a mid-stage merger. The peak star formation rate densities in the central clumps are ~300 - 3000 Msun/yr/kpc^2, suggesting regions with extreme star formation near the Eddington Limit. By comparing the flux obtained by ALMA and Submillimeter Array (SMA), we find that 68-90% of the emission is extended (> 1 kpc) in AzTEC 4 and 8. For AzTEC1, we identify at least 11 additional compact (~200 pc) clumps in the extended 3 - 4 kpc region. Overall, the data presented here suggest that the luminosity surface densities observed at < 150 pc scales are roughly similar to that observed in local ULIRGs, as in the eastern nucleus of Arp 220. Between 10 to 30% of the 860 micron continuum is concentrated in clumpy structures in the central kpc while the remaining flux is distributed over > 1 kpc regions, some of which could also be clumpy. These sources can be explained by a rapid inflow of gas such as a merger of gas-rich galaxies, surrounded by extended and clumpy starbursts.
