International audience; The potential contributions of exogenous organic matters (EOMs) to soil organic C and mineral N supply depend on their C and N mineralization, which can be assessed in laboratory incubations. Such incubations are essential to calibrate decomposition models, because not all EOMs can be tested in the field. However, EOM incubations are resource-intensive. Therefore, easily measurable EOM characteristics that can be useful to predict EOM behaviour are needed. We quantified C and N mineralization during the incubation of 663 EOMs from five groups (animal manures, composts, sewage sludges, digestates and others). This represents one of the largest and diversified set of EOM incubations. The C and N mineralization varied widely between and within EOM subgroups. We simulated C and N mineralization with a simple generic decomposition model. Three calibration methods were compared. Individual EOM calibration of the model yielded good model performances, while the use of a unique parameter set per EOM subgroup decreased the model performance, and the use of two EOM characteristics to estimate model parameters gave an intermediate model performance (average RMSE-C values of 32, 99 and 65 mg C g(-1) added C and average RMSE-N values of 50, 126 and 110 mg N g(-1) added N, respectively). Because of the EOM variability, individual EOM calibration based on incubation remains the recommended method for predicting most accurately the C and N mineralization of EOMs. However, the two alternative calibration methods are sufficient for the simulation of EOMs without incubation data to obtain reasonable model performances.

We have read with interest an opinion paper recently published in the European Journal of Soil Science (Berthelin et al., 2022). This paper presents some interesting considerations, at least one of which is already well known to soil scientists working on soil organic carbon (SOC), that is, a large portion (80%–90%) of fresh carbon inputs to soil is subject to rapid mineralization. The short-term mineralization kinetics of organic inputs is well-known and accounted for in soil organic matter models. Thus, clearly, the long-term predictions based on these models do not overlook short-term mineralization. We point out that many agronomic practices can significantly contribute to SOC sequestration. If conducted responsibly whilst fully recognising the caveats, SOC sequestration can lead to a win-win situation where agriculture can both contribute to the mitigation of climate change and adapt to it, whilst at the same time delivering other co-benefits such as reduced soil erosion and enhanced biodiversity., European Journal of Soil Science, 73 (3), ISSN:1351-0754, ISSN:1365-2389

International audience; The sensitivity of C and N mineralization in soil to water potential is mostly described in simulation models as a linear function independent of the pedoclimatic conditions. We hypothesized that water sensitivity could be sitespecific and dependent of climate or soil properties. In this study, we characterized the responses of C and N mineralization to water stress in ten soils representing a range of French arable cropping systems and evaluated whether the responses differ between soils and pedoclimatic contexts. C and N mineralization kinetics were quantified in laboratory incubations at four soil water potentials (pF) ranging from pF = 2.0 (~field capacity) to 4.2 (~permanent wilting point). The C and N mineralization rates, calculated by curve fitting, were linearly correlated with pF or relative water content (RWC). The slope of the linear regression, representing the sensitivity to water potential, differed significantly between sites, ranging from 0.12 to 0.35 pF-1 for C mineralization and 0.20 to 0.44 pF-1 for N mineralization. The sensitivity of C or N mineralization rate to pF or RWC could be well predicted by a couple of two soil properties: either microbial quotient (ratio of microbial biomass-C to total organic C) and soil pH or soil organic C:N ratio and soil pH. The sensitivity of soil to water stress was more accurately predicted by these site-specific variables than a model common to all pedoclimatic conditions. These results open the possibility of improving soil and soil-crop models for a more accurate prediction of water stress on C and N mineralization particularly in the context of climate change.

Increasing soil organic matter (SOM) is of primary importance for maintaining soil fertility and mitigating climate change. Leaving crop residues on top of soil is not always an efficient means of increasing SOM because (i) of the high mineralization of the crop residues, (ii) crop residues may increase the mineralization of existing SOM (priming effect) and (iii) wetting-drying cycles may increase mineralization of SOM and crop residues. Little research has been carried out into these mechanisms under Sudano-Sahelian conditions where the rainfall is mostly irregular with wetting-drying cycles during the transition between the wet and the dry season. To evaluate the effect of wetting-drying cycles on the mineralization of SOM and crop residues and the priming effect, an agricultural soil from the North Region of Cameroon with or without (controls) 13 C-labeled rice straw amendment as crop residues was either subjected to five wetting-drying cycles or maintained at constant water potential after a single rewetting event. Soil samples were incubated for 70 days at 28 °C and the CO 2 and 13 CO 2 emissions and mineral N were monitored. Adding straw (+ 833 μg C g − 1 soil) increased the cumulative CO 2 emissions from the soil (+ 921 μg C-CO 2 g − 1 soil). A positive priming effect was observed (+ 92 μg C-CO 2 g − 1 soil). Only the first wetting cycle created a mineralization flush of the SOM and the straw. This flush did not recur probably because of a lack of labile SOM. However an extra addition of straw after 28 days increased CO 2 emissions but did not result in further mineralization flushes after re-wetting while SOM mineralization was not limited by N availability. We conclude that SOM depletion under Sudano-Sahelian conditions was not explained by SOM mineralization enhancement due to multiple rewetting events or to priming effect following crop residues addition. Indeed, SOM depletion could rather be explained by a high level of mineralization of both, SOM and crop residues, when the soil reached its water retention capacity.

The input of organic fertilizers into soils is an interesting option as a substitution for mineral fertilization, but how their interaction with crop residues affects the fate of added carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) in the soil is still poorly known. Therefore, we analysed the effect of adding together organic fertilizer and straw on subsequent C and N mineralization. We incubated sugarcane straw (S), pig slurry (PS) and solid sewage sludge (DS) separately and in mixtures (PS‐S and DS‐S) at 28°C during 182 days. To discuss interactions, we used a simple additivity model based on measurements and a mechanistic model for C and N transformations in soil (CANTIS). Both models overestimated the C mineralization and did not correctly predict N mineralization of the two mixtures. The differences between observed and expected values calculated with the models were negative for C mineralization, indicating an antagonistic interaction in mixtures. The limitations for C decomposition might be the result of many factors, such as negative priming effect or limitation in N accessibility, which are not considered by CANTIS. We assumed that the priming effect induced by the mineralization of a mixture was not significantly different from the priming effect induced by the mineralization of the organic matters incubated alone. The use of a contact factor in CANTIS allowed the predicted C and N kinetics for the mixtures to be correctly fitted to measured data. It reflects the effect of fine‐scale C and N distribution heterogeneities on the intensity of microbial decomposition. A better integration of the interactions between different N and C sources should be addressed to develop modelling as an accurate tool for agroecosystem management.

Changes in the carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) compartments that result from the addition of organic material (OM) to the soil are predicted by the transformation of added OM (TAO) model with three parameters: very labile (P′L) and stable (PS) fractions of the OM and the rate of remineralization (kremin) of nitrogen immobilized by microorganisms. We propose relations between P′L, PS, kremin and various chemical groups in the OM identified by their 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra. The aromatic content increased the predicted PS in accordance with published results. The O-aromatic content also increased PS, but much less so than the aromatic content. The carboxyl content decreased PS and increased P′L as in the TAO model based on infrared spectrometry. The carbonyl content decreased P′L, whereas di-O-alkyl increased P′L. The chemical composition of the population of decomposer organisms did not appear to be homeostatic, but was related rather to the composition of the substrate: kremin was positively correlated with the carboxyl and di-O-alkyl content and negatively correlated with the alkyl content. Solid state 13C NMR spectroscopy gave better predictions of the transformations that resulted from adding OM than biochemical fractionation and near infrared reflectance spectrometry (NIRS). It is fast and non-destructive and provides new insights into the processes that control decomposition for research into waste recycling, agro-ecology and climate change.

Description du sujet. La concentration en nitrate dans la moitié des masses d’eau souterraine de la région wallonne (Belgique) a justifié le classement de celles-ci en zone vulnérable, en application de la Directive Nitrates (DN). Cette zone vulnérable présente une diversité de contextes agro-pédologiques. Ainsi, le contenu en azote des sols agricoles peut localement varier d’un facteur 4.Objectifs. L’étude consiste à établir si la teneur en carbone organique total (COT) d’un sol constitue un facteur de risque significatif quant à la lixiviation du nitrate vers les eaux souterraines.Méthode. L’article s’appuie sur des mesures COT et de reliquat d’azote nitrique dans le sol en début de période de lixiviation (APL – Azote Potentiellement Lessivable), réalisées en 2012 dans 1 500 parcelles lors d’un contrôle organisé en application du Programme de Gestion Durable de l’Azote, transposition de la DN en région wallonne. Résultats. L’examen des résultats illustre d’une part que l’APL est positivement corrélé au COT et que les parcelles qualifiées de « non conformes » présentent une concentration moyenne en COT significativement supérieure aux autres résultats.Conclusions. L’APL étant un indicateur environnemental du risque de lixiviation du nitrate, il apparait que le contenu COT est généralement de nature à constituer un risque de contamination des eaux souterraines par le nitrate. Il convient dès lors d’une part, d’améliorer la prise en compte de ce paramètre dans les conseils de fertilisation azotée et, d’autre part, dans le cas de récolte estivale, de gérer au mieux le sol par une mise en place efficiente de cultures pièges à nitrate., The management of soil organic matter, an important issue in reducing nitrate leaching to groundwaterDescription of the subject. The nitrate concentration in half of the groundwater bodies of the Walloon Region (Belgium) has justified their classification as vulnerable zones under the Nitrates Directive (ND). This vulnerable area has a relatively high diversity of agro-soil environments. Thus, the nitrogen content of agricultural soils can vary locally by a factor 4.Objectives. This study aimed to establish whether the carbon content of a soil is a significant risk factor in nitrate leaching to groundwater.Method. The article is based on measurements of nitrate nitrogen residue (APL) and soil total organic carbon (TOC) at the beginning of the leaching period. The measurements were made in 2012 in 1,500 plots, during inspections organized by the Wallonia Public Service. This was as part of the application of the Program for the Sustainable Management of Nitrogen in Agriculture, the scheme for implementing the ND within the Walloon region.Results. Examination of the results showed both that the APL was positively correlated to the TOC and that plots with “noncompliant” APL results had a significantly higher average TOC than the other plots.Conclusions. Since APL is an environmental indicator of the risk of nitrate leaching, it appears that the TOC may constitute a risk of groundwater contamination by nitrate. It is therefore advisable to improve the inclusion of this parameter in advice regarding nitrogen fertilization and secondly, in the case of summer harvest, to better manage the sowing of catch crops.

Les sols représentent une réserve de carbone plus importante que celles de l’atmosphère et de la végétation terrestre combinées. Ce réservoir de carbone impacte directement les concentrations en CO2 atmosphérique via le processus de minéralisation de la matière organique. Comprendre et prédire les flux de carbone dans le sol et entre le sol et l’atmosphère nécessite donc d’appréhender l’ensemble des processus soutenant la minéralisation de la matière organique dans le sol. Jusqu’en 2013, il était communément admis que la respiration par les microorganismes hétérotrophes du sol était la principale voie régulant la minéralisation de la matière organique dans ce compartiment. Cependant, suite à l’observation d’émissions de CO2 par des sols stérilisés, l’hypothèse d’une voie de minéralisation de matière organique soutenue par des métabolismes oxydatifs extracellulaires (EXOMET) a été proposée. Les travaux conduits au cours de cette thèse ont visé (i) à établir que les émissions de CO2 dans des sols stérilisés étaient le fait de métabolismes extracellulaires, (ii) à vérifier le caractère cosmopolite de ce processus quelles que soient les conditions édaphiques (iii) à identifier des facteurs impliqués dans la régulation de l’EXOMET et (iv) à proposer une approche permettant de déterminer sa contribution aux émissions de CO2 dans des sols vivants. Les résultats obtenus soutiennent l’hypothèse de l’EXOMET et mettent en exergue que les métabolismes extracellulaires sont régulés par des facteurs et des lois physico-chimiques différentes de celles supportées par les organismes vivants. Les données acquises suggèrent également que l’expression de l’EXOMET pourrait avoir des conséquences importantes pour certains écosystèmes (e.g., rhizosphère) et serait accentuée par les modifications de variables liées au changement climatique (e.g., température, humidité). Compte tenu des estimations de la contribution de l’EXOMET aux émissions de CO2 par les sols, de son activité au sein de sols aux conditions physico-chimiques variables et de la potentielle universalité de ce processus dans les sols, il est maintenant nécessaire d’intégrer l’EXOMET dans les modèles biogéochimiques globaux visant à appréhender les flux de carbone dans les sols et à prédire les émissions de CO2 et l’évolution du climat. Les données présentées dans ce manuscrit, contribuent significativement à la connaissance et à la compréhension de l’EXOMET mais soulignent également qu’un travail conséquent reste à mener pour appréhender les mécanismes sous tendant l’EXOMET et pour caractériser et quantifier ces métabolismes extracellulaires à l’échelle écosystémique.

In Sudano-Sahelian regions, wetting-drying cycles may affect soil carbon mineralization in soil already poor in carbon. Conservation agriculture systems by improving crop residues return to soil is given to increase soil organic carbon and soil fertility. We studied the effect of biomass management regimes and wetting-drying cycles on soil carbon stocks and mineralization. A 50-day experiment was set up to compare carbon mineralization under two biomass management regimes, with and without mulch, using three soil wetting treatments. Wetting the soil and mulching increased soil carbon mineralization. However, wetting-drying cycles did not increase the soil carbon mineralization as compared with soils kept moist. During the experiment, the total carbon mineralization from the dry soils was low, 0.63 tC ha −1 and 0.53 tC ha −1 respectively for soils with and without mulch. Total carbon mineralization from soil without mulch was 1.40 tC ha −1 with wetting-drying cycles and 1.51 tC ha −1 for soils that were kept moist. Total carbon mineralization from soils with mulch was 1.70 tC ha −1 , regardless of whether the soils had wetting-drying cycles or were kept moist. In our context, characterized by very little crop residues and rapid mineralization of this biomass, the conservation agriculture systems do not seem sufficient to increase soil organic carbon stocks.

International audience; This study aimed at determining the fate of trace elements (TE) following soil organic waste (OW) application. We used a unique combination of X-ray absorption spectroscopy analyses, to determine TE speciation, with incubation experiments for in situ monitoring of TE availability patterns over a time course with the technique of the diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT). We showed that copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) availability were both increased in OW-amended soil, but their release was controlled by distinct mechanisms. Zn speciation in OW was found to be dominated by an inorganic species, i.e. Zn sorbed on Fe oxides. Zn desorption from Fe oxides could explain the increase in Zn availability in OW amended soil. Cu speciation in OW was dominated by organic species. Cu release through the mineralization of organic carbon from OW was responsible for the increase in Cu availability. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. International audience; Anaerobic digestion is a beneficial organic waste management technology that, in addition to biogas used for energy production, produces a by-product called anaerobic digestate, which can be used as a fertilizer or as an amendment as long as it has no harmful effects on the environment. The objective of the research described in this article was to assess one of these possible harmful effects, associated with the release of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). Four anaerobic digestates were subjected to phase separation, and some of them also to composting, drying or reverse osmosis. Carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions were measured during incubations of soil-digestate mixtures under controlled conditions. The mineralization of organic carbon reached 28–58 % of digestate organic carbon after 3 months in the presence of the solid digestates, and was lower (18–42 %) for the liquid digestates. The raw digestates had intermediate intensity of organic carbon mineralization to CO2. Drying and composting reduced CO2 emissions by stabilizing the digestate organic matter. N2O emission factors varied between 0.11 and 2.10 % of total digestate N depending on the origin and state of the digestates (raw, solid, liquid, composted). The highest emissions were measured with the raw digestates, and the lowest generally with the liquid ones. The study showed that in addition to phase separation, composting also reduced GHG emissions whereas drying and reverse osmosis considerably increased these emissions. Composted and dried digestates can be used as organic amendment leading to potential carbon storage larger than GHG emission, while for raw digestates, the GHG emissions always exceeded potential C storage.

Le sol est un compartiment majeur de stockage du carbone (C) organique de l'écosystème terrestre. Il joue un rôle important dans la régulation du climat. Toute variation des flux de carbone entre l'atmosphère et l'écosystème terrestre pourrait avoir un impact important sur l'augmentation de CO2 dans l'atmosphère, mais aussi sur la diminution des teneurs en matière organique du sol et donc sur la fertilité des sols. Au Nord Cameroun, les sols sont exposés à de longues périodes sèches (5 à 6 mois par an) qui alternent avec une saison humide. La période de transition entre ces deux saisons, peut durer de mi-avril à fin juin et est caractérisée par des pluies très irrégulières. Ces cycles d'humectation-dessiccation pourraient selon la littérature accentuer la minéralisation du carbone organique du sol et le cycle des éléments nutritifs. L'objectif de cette étude est de quantifier l'impact des cycles humectation-dessiccation sur la minéralisation du carbone dans un contexte soudano-sahélien. Pour faire des mesures représentatives sur le terrain, il est nécessaire d'étudier la variation sur 24 heures de la respiration du sol après humectation suite à une période sèche. Cette mise au point méthodologique a montré que la respiration du sol présente une courbe quadratique au cours de la journée, devenant presque linéaire au cours de la nuit. La température et l'humidité du sol ont permis d'expliquer au moins 73% des variations sur 24 heures. Ces observations ont été utilisées pour proposer une méthode pour estimer la respiration moyenne diurne et nocturne après humectation des sols. La méthode proposée dans cette étude a l'avantage d'être basée sur un nombre réduit de mesures et est par conséquent plus facile à mettre en oeuvre pour suivre la respiration du sol sur 24 heures après les premières pluies. Une première étude expérimentale de terrain a permis de montrer que la ré-humectation des sols et le mode de gestion des pailles ont augmenté la minéralisation du carbone de ces sols. En revanche, la fréquence des cycles humectation-dessiccation des sols sur une période de 50 jours n'a pas augmenté la minéralisation cumulée du carbone des sols. Au Nord Cameroun, la minéralisation rapide des pailles rend difficile l'augmentation des stocks de carbone du sol par conservation des pailles des cultures précédentes à la surface du sol. Dans une seconde expérimentation de laboratoire, en conditions contrôlées, les cycles humectation-dessiccation n'ont pas augmenté la minéralisation du carbone organique du sol et de l'azote (N) par rapport aux sols maintenus humides. Cependant, les émissions de CO2 ont augmenté avec l'addition de paille enrichie en carbone-13. Cette addition de la paille marquée a augmenté la minéralisation de la matière organique du sol (priming effect). La minéralisation de la paille a diminué avec les cycles humectation-dessiccation et la quantité de paille restante était de 102 μg Cg-1 sol sur les sols ré-humectés contre 48 μg Cg-1 sol sur les sols maintenus humides. L'absence de cette réponse de la minéralisation du carbone et d'azote du sol aux cycles humectation-dessiccation pourrait être liée à une baisse de l'activité microbienne durant les périodes de dessèchement et l'absence d'une augmentation soutenue des taux de minéralisation du carbone avec les cycles ultérieurs d'humectation-dessiccation.

The mineralization of organic C requires two main steps. First, microorganisms secrete exoenzymes in soil in order to depolymerize plant and microbial cell walls and release soluble substrates for microbial assimilation. The second step of mineralization, during which C is released as CO2, implies the absorption and utilization of solubi- lized substrates by microbial cells with the aim to produce energy (ATP). In cells, soluble substrates are carried out by a cascade of respiratory enzymes, along which protons and electrons are transferred from a substrate to oxygen. Given the complexity of this oxidative metabolism and the typical fragility of respiratory enzymes, it is traditionally considered that respiration (second step of C mineralization process) is strictly an intracellular metabolism process. The recurrent observations of substantial CO2 emissions in soil microcosms where microbial cells have been reduced to extremely low levels challenges this paradigm. In a recent study where some respiratory enzymes have shown to function in an extracellular context in soils, Maire et al. (2013) suggested that an extracellular oxidative metabolism (EXOMET) substantially contributes to CO2 emission from soils. This idea is supported by the recent publication of Blankinship et al., 2014 who showed the presence of active enzymes involved in the Krebs cycle on soil particles. Many controversies subsist in the scientific community due to the presence of non-proliferating but morphologically intact cells after irradiation that could substantially contribute to those soil CO2 emissions. To test whether a purely extracellular oxidative metabolism contribute to soil CO2 emissions, we combined high doses of gamma irradiations to different time of soil autoclaving. The presence of active and non-active cells in soil was checked by DNA and RNA extraction and by electronic microscopy. None active cells (RNA-containing cells) were detectable after irradiation, but some morphological intact cells were observed by microscopy. These “ghost” cells were completely destroyed by the irradiation-autoclaving combination releasing large amount of soluble C. The soil respiration (O 2 consumption and CO2 production) wasreduced by irradiation and autoclaving but not stopped, suggesting the presence of an EXOMET. The delta 13C of CO2 released in the irradiated-autoclaved soil was strongly depleted (-70h indicating that this extracellular metabolism induced a substantial isotopic fractionation. Our findings suggest that two main oxidative metabolisms co-occur in soils: cell respiration and EXOMET. The isotopic fractionation induced by the EXOMET open perspectives for its quantification in non-sterilized living soils.

In addition to the effect of litter quality (LQ) on decomposition, increasing evidence is demonstrating that carbon mineralization can be influenced by the past resource history, mainly through following two processes: (1) decomposer communities from recalcitrant litter environments may have a wider functional ability to decompose a wide range of litter species than those originating from richer environments, i.e., the functional breadth (FB) hypothesis; and/or (2) decomposer communities may be specialized towards the litter they most frequently encounter, i.e., the home-field advantage (HFA) hypothesis. Nevertheless, the functional dissimilarities among contrasting microbial communities, which are generated by the FB and the HFA, have rarely been simultaneously quantified in the same experiment, and their relative contributions over time have never been assessed. To test these hypotheses, we conducted a reciprocal transplant decomposition experiment under controlled conditions using litter and soil originating from four ecosystems along a land-use gradient (forest, plantation, grassland, and cropland) and one additional treatment using 13C-labelled flax litter allowing us to assess the priming effect (PE) in each ecosystem. We found substantial effects of LQ on carbon mineralization (more than two-thirds of the explained variance), whereas the contribution of the soil type was fairly low (less than one-tenth), suggesting that the contrasting soil microbial communities play only a minor role in regulating decomposition rates. Although the results on PE showed that we overestimated litter-derived CO2 fluxes, litter-microbe interactions contributed significantly to the unexplained variance observed in carbon mineralization models. The magnitudes of FB and HFA were relatively similar, but the directions of these mechanisms were sometimes opposite depending on the litter and soil types. FB and HFA estimates calculated on parietal sugar mass loss were positively correlated with those calculated on enzymatic activity, confirming the idea that the interaction between litter quality and microbial community structure may modify the trajectory of carbon mineralization via enzymatic synthesis. We conclude that although litter quality was the predominant factor controlling litter mineralization, the local microbial communities and interactions with their substrates can explain a small (< 5%) but noticeable portion of carbon fluxes.

From a strictly mineralogical point of view, weathering of volcanic glass produces secondary phases that are short range ordered alumino-silicates (SRO-AlSi). These are imogolite tubes (2 to 3 nm of diameter) and allophane supposedly spheres (3.5 to 5 nm). Their local structure is composed of a curved gibbsite Al layer and Si tetrahedra in the vacancies (Q0). Proto-imogolites have the same local structure but are roof-shape nanoparticles likely representing the precursors of imogolite and allophanes (Levard et al. 2010). These structures and sizes give to the SRO-AlSi large specific surfaces and high reactivities. In some natural sites, imogolites and allophanes are formed in large quantities. Aging of these phases may lead to the formation of more stable minerals (halloysite, kaolinite and gibbsite) (Torn et al 1997). In natural environments, when the weathering of volcanic glass is associated with the establishment of vegetation, the soils formed are generally andosols. These soils are particularly rich in organic matter (OM), which is explained by the high ability of SRO-AlSi mineral phases to form bonds with organic compounds. In a first order "bulk" approach, it is considered that these bonds strongly stabilize the organic compounds as their mean age can reach more than 10 kyrs in some studied sites (Basile-Doelsch et al. 2005; Torn et al. 1997). However, the structure of the mineral phases present in andosols deserves more attention. Traditionally, the presence in the SRO-AlSi andosols was shown by selective dissolution approaches by oxalate and pyrophosphate. Using spectroscopic methods, mineralogical analysis of SRO-AlSi in andosols samples showed that these mineral phases were neither imogolites nor allophanes as originally supposed, but only less organized structures remained in a state of proto-imogolites (Basile-Doelsch al. 2005 ; Levard et al., 2012). The presence of OM would have an inhibitory effect on the formation of secondary mineral phases, by blocking the crystal growth of SRO-AlSi. Conversely, the effect of minerals on the dynamics of organic compounds also deserves to be studied in greater detail. If the "bulk" approaches showed that proto-imogolites involve long-term stabilized OM, other approaches such as densimetric fractionation and C3/C4 chronosequences (Basile-Doelsch et al. 2007; De Junet et al. 2013) led us to consider a new model involving two types of organo-mineral interactions: (1) OM stabilized by strong bonds to proto-imogolite, leading to a slow OM turnover and (2) OM retained within the porosity of the 3D structure formed by the proto-imogolite (similar to a gel structure), leading to a faster OM turnover. Understanding the mechanisms of organo-mineral interactions in andosols will open new research directions for understanding the mechanisms of stabilization of OM in any type of soil (Bonnard et al. 2012). International audience; Soil organic matter (SOM) quality and carbon (C) availability may be major features influencing the effect of earthworms on the aerobic processes in clayey tropical soils. In this study, we assessed the effect of an anecic (Polypheretima elongata), an endogeic (Pontoscolex corethrurus) and an epigeic (Eudrilus eugeniae) earthworm on the aerobic microbial activity of two tropical soils, a calcic Vertisol and an acid Ferralsol, with clay content >70% and very different organic C content and SOM stability. The soil–earthworm interaction was studied in a 6-month mesocosm experiment in a greenhouse using soils with and without (control soil) earthworm addition. Potential C mineralisation, actual net nitrogen (N) mineralisation and dehydrogenase activity (DHA), as indicators of the aerobic activity of the soils, and phosphorus (P) availability were determined during the trial. DHA was used as an indicator of the global aerobic activity. Earthworms had little effect on potential C mineralisation but significantly increased actual net N mineralisation. The increase in N mineralisation in the Vertisol was twice as great as, and longer (6 v. 3 months) than for the Ferralsol. Differences between soils for N mineralisation were associated with a less recalcitrant SOM in the Vertisol. Available P increased 10% in the earthworm treatments. Earthworm activity improved N and P availability. DHA was 15 times higher for the Vertisol than for the Ferralsol, but the positive effect of earthworms on DHA was greater for the Ferralsol. This effect was greater for E. eugeniae, probably because of surface burrows generated by this epigeic earthworm, which favoured oxygen entry into the soil. Differences between the two soils were greater for DHA than for C and N mineralisation, and this was observed for the control soils as well as for the earthworm treatments. This indicates that earthworm activity modified the rate of the aerobic processes but it did not affect the intrinsic biological properties of these tropical soils, which were controlled mainly by SOM quality and C availability.

Soils represent the principal reservoir of carbon with two times as much carbon as is found in the atmospheric pool. In an effort to better predict and anticipate how soil carbon dynamics will be affected by environmental changes and by the evolution of cropping systems, it is necessary to better understand the processes that regulate soil organic matter decomposition. This study aims to investigate two regulatory mechanisms of the soil carbon dynamic: the properties of the microbial habitat and the ones of the microbial communities. Because they are directly affected by the climatic changes and by the rapid evolution of cropping systems these two mechanisms appear to have a key role in the regulation of soil carbon decomposition. Experimental designs were setup allowing the variations, independent or simultaneous, of the properties of microbial habitat and the ones of the microbial communities. First, to assess the relative importance of soil structure, microcosms with different gradient of disaggregation were incubated. Then, to assess the relative importance of diversity erosion, microcosms with microbial diversity gradient were incubated. Finally, using contrasted soils varying in their habitats and their microbial communities properties, we aimed to hierarchize these two carbon decomposition regulatory mechanisms.The obtained results indicate that microbial activity of soil organic carbon decomposition seems to be more controlled by environmental conditions (such as pH, texture and also substrate supply) than by the microbial community structure or metabolic profiles. Then we observed that organic carbon mineralisation was impacted only when the levels of diversity were very low suggesting the existence of a threshold, and that the functional redundancy is maybe not as great as numerous studies suggest. Moreover, our work showed that when conditions of aeration in the pore system are sufficient, mechanisms regulating the dynamic of soil organic carbon take place at fine spatial scales.; Les sols constituent le principal réservoir de carbone, avec près de deux fois plus de carbone que le pool atmosphérique. Afin de pouvoir prédire et anticiper le devenir du carbone dans le contexte actuel de changement climatique et de changement d'usage des terres, il apparaît nécessaire de mieux comprendre les processus qui régulent la décomposition des matières organiques dans les sols. Cette thèse se propose donc d'étudier deux types de régulateurs de la dynamique du carbone du sol : les propriétés de l'habitat microbien et celles des communautés microbiennes. En effet, puisque directement affectées par les changements climatiques d'une part, et les changements d'usage des terres et de pratiques culturales d'autre part, l'habitat microbien et les communautés microbiennes apparaissent comme des régulateurs clés de la dynamique du carbone du sol. Des dispositifs expérimentaux permettant de faire varier les propriétés de l'habitat microbien et celles des communautés microbiennes de façon indépendante ou simultanée ont été mis en place. Dans un premier temps, des microcosmes dont la structure du sol a été manipulée afin d'obtenir des gradients de déstructuration, ont été incubés. Dans un second temps ce sont des microcosmes mettant en jeu des gradients de diversité microbienne qui ont été incubés. Enfin, une incubation utilisant les différences naturelles de propriétés de l'habitat microbien et de communautés microbiennes a été mise en place pour tenter de hiérarchiser ces régulateurs de la décomposition des matières organiques du sol. Les résultats obtenus ont mis en évidence que l'activité microbienne de décomposition du carbone organique du sol semble plus contrôlée par les conditions environnementales (comme le pH, la texture et l'approvisionnement en substrat) que par la structure des communautés microbiennes ou leurs capacités métaboliques. En plus de cela, la fonction de minéralisation ne semble être affectée que dans le cas d'une très grande érosion de la biodiversité suggérant la présence d'un effet seuil, et que l'importance de la redondance fonctionnelle n'est pas toujours aussi grande que ce que le suggère de nombreuses études. D'autre part, dans des conditions d'aération suffisante, les mécanismes qui réguleraient la dynamique du carbone organique des sols se passeraient à des échelles très fines.

In addition to total organic carbon and nitrogen, potential organic carbon mineralization under controlled laboratory conditions and indicators such as the indicator of remaining organic carbon in soil (I-ROC), based on Van Soest biochemical fractionation and short-term carbon mineralization in soil, are used to predict the evolution of exogenous organic matter (EOM) after its application to soils. The purpose of this study was to develop near infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) calibration models that could predict these characteristics in a large dataset including 300 EOMs representative of the broad range of such materials applied to cultivated soils (plant materials, animal manures, composts, sludges. etc.). The NIRS predictions of total organic matter and total organic carbon were satisfactory (R(2)p = 0.80 and 0.85, ratio of performance to deviation, RPDp = 2.2 and 2.6, respectively), and prediction of the Van Soest soluble, cellulose and holocellulose fractions were acceptable (R(2)p = 0.82, 0.73 and 0.70. RPDp = 2.3, 1.9 and 1.8, respectively) with coefficients of variation close to those of the reference methods. The NIRS prediction of carbon mineralization during incubation was satisfactory and indeed better regarding the short-term results of mineralization (R(2)p = 0.78 and 0.78, and RPDp = 2.1 and 2.0 for 3 and 7 days of incubation, respectively). The I-ROC indicator was predicted with fairly good accuracy (R(2)p = 0.79, RPDp = 2.2). Variables related to the long-term C mineralization of EOM in soil were not predicted accurately, except for I-ROC which was based on analytical and well-identified characteristics, probably because of the increasing interactions and complexity of the factors governing EOM mineralization in soil as a function of incubation time. This study demonstrated the possibility of developing NIRS predictive models for EOM characteristics in heterogeneous datasets of EOMs. However. specific NIRS predictive models still remain necessary for sludges, organo-mineral fertilizers and liquid manures.
