However, little is known about how different SiHySCL materials influence cosmetic adhesion. Recent reports suggest that the newly introduced lehfilcon A, a 2-week frequent replacement SiHySCL with Water Gradient and Celligent technology, may exhibit reduced lipid and cosmetic adherence. This study aimed to compare the adhesion of non-waterproof mascara to four types of 2-week frequent replacement SiHySCLs to better understand the impact of lens material properties on cosmetic contamination.Methods: Four variants of SiHySCLs were utilized: samfilcon A, comfilcon A, senofilcon A, and lehfilcon A (with 12 lenses in each category). Non-waterproof mascara was randomly applied in a cross-pattern on the SiHySCL surface using the Latin squares method. Microscopic photography and ImageJ analysis software were employed to assess the proportion of mascara adhering to the SiHySCL surface following a one-hour soak in saline solution.Results: The observed percentages of remaining mascara adhesion on the SiHySCL surfaces were as follows: samfilcon A (3.1± 1.7%), comfilcon A (6.0± 1.4%), senofilcon A (7.1± 1.5%), and lehfilcon A (0.9± 0.2%). Notably, lehfilcon A exhibited a significantly lower percentage of adhered non-water proof mascara compared to the other lenses (p< 0.01).Conclusion: This study demonstrates that SiHySCL material properties significantly influence mascara adhesion. Among the tested lenses, lehfilcon A showed the lowest level of mascara adherence, suggesting that its Water Gradient and Celligent technology may contribute to reduced cosmetic contamination. These findings provide valuable insights for individuals who wear makeup and use SiHySCLs, as well as for future lens material development.Plain language summary: Cosmetics, like mascara, can stick to contact lenses, causing discomfort and potentially affecting vision. This study examined how well non-waterproof mascara adheres to four types of silicone hydrogel contact lenses designed for 2-week use. Airborne particles adhering to contact lenses may cause substantial damage to the ocular surface. The recently released one-day disposable silicone hydrogel soft contact lens (SCL), the verofilcon A, has a smooth surface with SMARTSURFACE® technology, which is designed to prevent adhesion of protein components and foreign bodies. The purpose of this study was to verify the protective quality of verofilcon A SCL against adhesion of Asian dust particles to its surface.Methods: Verofilcon A and etafilcon A (control lens) SCLs were used (n=16 per group), and 0.2 mL of physiological saline containing 0.01 mg/mL of Asian dust particles was dropped on the surface of SCLs, allowed to stand for 1 hour, shaken for 1 minute, and rinsed three times with saline (after rinsing). In addition, the samples were agitated by a vortex mixer for 1 minute and rinsed three times with saline (after vortex). The number of Asian dust particles adhering to the SCLs and percentage of the surface area occupied by the Asian dust particles was determined before washing, after rinsing, and after vortexing.Results: The number of adherent Asian dust particles was lower on verofilcon A SCL (297 ± 116 after rinsing, and 5 ± 14 after vortexing) than on etafilcon A SCL (523 ± 212 after rinsing, p=0.003, and 378 ± 268 after vortexing, p< 0.001). The Asian dust adhesion area was also lower on verofilcon A SCL (3.6 ± 2.3% after rinsing and 0.0 ± 0.1% after vortexing than on etafilcon A (10.2 ± 2.1% after rinsing, p=0.002, and 5.2 ± 3.0% after vortexing, p< 0.001).Conclusion: These findings indicate that verofilcon A SCL has the property of low adhesion of Asian dust particles. The material of SCLs may affect the pollen adhesion to the SCLs. The factors associated with the number of pollen particles that are adherent to daily disposable SCL were investigated.Methods: Pollen particles were experimentally exposed to the contact lens surface of 12 types of SCLs for 1 hour, and the SCLs were washed and rinsed with a physiological saline (n=10 for each SCL type). A total of 120 contact lenses were used in this study. The pollen particles attached to the SCL were observed and photographed under a microscope. The influence of the materials of the SCLs on the degree of pollen adhesion were investigated.Results: The number of residual pollen particles attached to SCLs was in the range from 0– 293/area of 200× 200 μm. Percentage of pollen adhesion area of the surface of the SCL was in the range from 0.01% to 3.25%. There were significant differences in both the number and adhesion area of pollen particles among the 12 types of SCLs tested (P< 0.0001 and P< 0.0001, respectively). The number of pollen particles adhered to SCLs was significantly higher in colored SCLs than clear SCLs (unpaired t-test, p< 0.001). The portion of pollen adhesion area was the lowest in the silicone hydrogel SCLs made with delefilcon-A (0.01 ± 0.02%).Conclusion: Pollen adhesion in daily disposable SCLs depends on the characteristics and materials of the SCLs and was high in colored SCLs and lowest in delefilcon-A silicone hydrogel SCL. We investigated the cleaning effect of disinfectants and rinsing solution on cedar pollen attached to SCLs.Methods: Two-week replacement disposable SCLs, to which pollen particles were experimentally attached, were washed and cleaned with either saline of rinsing solution (n = 10) or 3% hydrogen peroxide (n = 10). We observed, under a microscope, the cedar pollen adhered to the SCLs after washing.Results: The number of residual pollens attached to SCLs was 23.7 ± 25.7 with rinsing solution and 0.2 ± 0.6 with 3% hydrogen peroxide solution per single area (100 μm × 100 μm). The percentage of adhesion area of pollen to the SCLs was 0.9 ± 1.1% with rinsing solution and 0.0 ± 0.0% with 3% hydrogen peroxide solution. There were significant differences in the number of pollen and adhesion areas of pollen between the two groups (p < 0.05 and p < 0.05, respectively).Conclusion: These results suggest that hydrogen peroxide solution is superior in cleaning effect of cedar pollen attached to SCLs compared to saline.Keywords: hydrogen peroxide, pollen, disinfection, soft contact lens

Abstract

Introduction: In the 330-patient ADVOCATE trial of avacopan for the treatment of antineutrophil cytoplasmic autoantibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis, in which 81% of patients had renal involvement, estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) increased on average 7.3 ml/min per 1.73 m2 in the avacopan group and 4.1 ml/min per 1.73 m2 in the prednisone group (P = 0.029) at week 52. This new analysis examines the results in the patient subgroup with severe renal insufficiency at enrollment into the trial, i.e., eGFR ≤20 ml/min per 1.73 m2. Methods: eGFR was determined at baseline and over the course of the trial. Changes in eGFR were compared between the 2 treatment groups. Results: In ADVOCATE, 27 of 166 patients (16%) in the avacopan group and 23 of 164 patients (14%) in the prednisone group had a baseline eGFR ≤20 ml/min per 1.73 m2. At week 52, eGFR increased on average 16.1 and 7.7 ml/min per 1.73 m2 in the avacopan and prednisone groups, respectively (P = 0.003). The last eGFR value measured during the 52-week treatment period was ≥2-fold higher than baseline in 41% of patients in the avacopan group compared to 13% in the prednisone group (P = 0.030). More patients in the avacopan group versus prednisone group had increases in eGFR above 20, 30, and 45 ml/min per 1.73 m2, respectively. Serious adverse events occurred in 13 of 27 patients (48%) in the avacopan group and 16 of 23 patients (70%) in the prednisone group. Conclusion: Among patients with baseline eGFR ≤20 ml/min per 1.73 m2 in the ADVOCATE trial, eGFR improved more in the avacopan group than in the prednisone group.

We evaluated the relations between the aqueous humor level of SIRT1 and age, sex, systemic diseases, the severity of lens opacity, and other factors. Setting: This study was conducted at a university teaching hospital in Tokyo, Japan. Design: This study was designed based on the consecutive case series. The IOP was measured at intervals of 4–6 weeks, and the visual fields were examined at least twice a year for 3 years. The annual change of mean deviation (MD slope) was used to quantify visual field loss. Results: The mean MD value was –5.9±5.0 dB at baseline; it was –5.6±4.8 dB at 12 months, –5.9±5.0 dB at 24 months, and –5.6±5.1 dB at 36 months after switching. The mean MD slope was –0.2±0.8 dB/year before switching and 0.3±1.3 dB/year from baseline to 1 year, –0.3±1.1 dB/year from 1–2 years, and 0.3±0.9 dB/year from 2–3 years after switching. The mean MD slope from baseline to 36 months was correlated with the IOP reduction rate at 36 months after switching. Visual field progression was associated with the IOP reduction rate at 12 months after switching.Conclusion: Switching to DTFC from prior glaucoma therapy improved the MD slope for at least 3 years. Reduction of the IOP after switching to DTFC was effective for delaying visual field progression. Although our study was not nonrandomized and was small in scale, the findings suggest that DTFC might have a beneficial effect on the visual fields in patients with open-angle glaucoma. The amplitude and implicit time of the ERG parameters were extracted from the ERG traces. Retinal thickness and volume were measured by optical coherence tomography in nine macular subfields. Then the correlations among ERG parameters and morphological parameters were analyzed. The cone b-wave and 30 Hz flicker implicit time were correlated with retinal thickness and volume in seven out of nine subfields, excluding the temporal subfields. In addition, the amplitude of the cone b-wave was correlated with retinal thickness and volume in the nasal inner and nasal outer subfields. The aim of this paper is to report and discuss changes seen in macular sensitivity and macular thickness after intravitreal injection of triamcinolone acetonide (IVTA) in two patients with macular edema and central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO). Two eyes from two patients with CRVO (one each with ischemic and nonischemic CRVO) received IVTA for macular edema. Microperimetry was performed to measure macular sensitivity within the central 4, 10, and 20 degree fields, while the macular thickness within these fields was measured by optical coherence tomography. The mean macular thickness and macular sensitivity within the central 4, 10, and 20 degree fields improved after IVTA in the patient with nonischemic CRVO. In contrast, the mean macular thickness and sensitivity within the central 4, 10, and 20 degree fields showed little change after IVTA in the patient with ischemic CRVO. In 41 consecutive patients with BRVO aged 68.9 ± 10.0 years (22 women and 19 men), the area of capillary nonperfusion was measured by fluorescein angiography. Retinal thickness and retinal volume were measured by optical coherence tomography, and mean retinal sensitivity was calculated for each of 9 macular subfields. Mean visual acuity and macular sensitivity within the central subfield were not significantly correlated with the nonperfused area. However, the macular sensitivity within the central 5 subfields and all 9 subfields showed significant negative correlations with the nonperfused area. Also, macular thickness and volume within all 9 subfields were significantly correlated with the nonperfused area. We report a case of cystoid macular edema (CME) secondary to unilateral CRVO in a patient with SLE that responded to intravitreous injection of an anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) agent. A 33-year-old Japanese woman was referred to our department with unilateral impairment of vision. Microperimetry (MP-1) showed a cessation of foveal sensitivity. Fluorescein angiography showed CME without ischaemia of the macular region or peripheral retina (nonischemic CRVO). A diagnosis of CME and unilateral nonischemic CRVO combined with SLE was made and intravitreous anti-VEGF therapy was given. A sample of aqueous humor was harvested at the start of intravitreous injection after obtaining informed consent. Then the levels of VEGF and monocyte chemotactic protein (MCP)-1 were measured in the aqueous humor by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, revealing that VEGF was 234 pg/mL and MCP-1 was 501 pg/mL. Two weeks later, left eye vision improved to 20/20. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) showed considerable amelioration of retinal swelling and CME. MP-1 showed a marked increase of foveal sensitivity. However, she had recurrence of edema 3 months later. After harvesting aqueous humor again, intravitreous injection of an anti-VEGF agent was repeated for CME. The aqueous VEGF and MCP-1 levels were 156 pg/mL and 360 pg/mL, respectively. These findings suggest that inflammation was improved by intravitreous injection of bevacizumab. Abstract

BACKGROUND: The C5a receptor inhibitor avacopan is being studied for the treatment of antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis.METHODS: In this randomized, controlled trial, we assigned patients with ANCA-associated vasculitis in a 1:1 ratio to receive oral avacopan at a dose of 30 mg twice daily or oral prednisone on a tapering schedule. All the patients received either cyclophosphamide (followed by azathioprine) or rituximab. The first primary end point was remission, defined as a Birmingham Vasculitis Activity Score (BVAS) of 0 (on a scale from 0 to 63, with higher scores indicating greater disease activity) at week 26 and no glucocorticoid use in the previous 4 weeks. The second primary end point was sustained remission, defined as remission at both weeks 26 and 52. Both end points were tested for noninferiority (by a margin of 20 percentage points) and for superiority.RESULTS: A total of 331 patients underwent randomization; 166 were assigned to receive avacopan, and 165 were assigned to receive prednisone. The mean BVAS at baseline was 16 in both groups. Remission at week 26 (the first primary end point) was observed in 120 of 166 patients (72.3%) receiving avacopan and in 115 of 164 patients (70.1%) receiving prednisone (estimated common difference, 3.4 percentage points; 95% confidence interval [CI], -6.0 to 12.8; PCONCLUSIONS: In this trial involving patients with ANCA-associated vasculitis, avacopan was noninferior but not superior to prednisone taper with respect to remission at week 26 and was superior to prednisone taper with respect to sustained remission at week 52. All the patients received cyclophosphamide or rituximab. The safety and clinical effects of avacopan beyond 52 weeks were not addressed in the trial. Abstract

A study was conducted to investigate AlGaN potential barrier heights of AlGaN/GaN heterostructures with and without SiN passivation. Catalytic chemical vapor deposition (Cat-CVD) SiN passivation lowered the AlGaN potential barrier height more significantly than plasma-enhanced CVD (PECVD) SiN passivation, suggesting that the passivation method could influence the AlGaN potential barrier height.
