1. Wettability and Color Change of Copper by Controlling Area Fraction of Laser Ablated Surface

Abstract

In this research, wettability control by area fraction of laser ablated surface of copper is presented. The functional surfaces with full wettability control from highly hydrophilic to super-hydrophobic were created on copper by nanosecond (ns) and picosecond (ps) laser irradiation. The area fraction and color change were evaluated by digital image processing of microscopic images of the laser-ablated copper surface. The control of the wetting angle from almost 0 degrees to 132 degrees was achieved for both ps and ns pulses by controlling the area fraction of the laser-ablated surface. Cassie, Cassie-Baxter, and Wenzel models were adopted to explain the experimental results. For the first time, the wettability and color of copper were controlled by controlling the area fraction of the laser-ablated surface. It is expected that the current results make an impact on the heat exchanger technology of water heat sinks, cooling units, atmospheric water generators, and fog harvesting and impact numerous applications from power plants to solar thermal water systems devices where highly-hydrophilic to super hydrophobic copper can be applied., Comment: 30 pages, 11 figures, 1 table, 103 references

Abstract

The exciting properties of micro- and nano-patterned surfaces found in natural species hide a virtually endless potential of technological ideas, opening new opportunities for innovation and exploitation in materials science and engineering. Due to the diversity of biomimetic surface functionalities, inspirations from natural surfaces are interesting for a broad range of applications in engineering, including phenomena of adhesion, friction, wear, lubrication, wetting phenomena, self-cleaning, antifouling, antibacterial phenomena, thermoregulation and optics. Lasers are increasingly proving to be promising tools for the precise and controlled structuring of materials at micro- and nano-scales. When ultrashort-pulsed lasers are used, the optimal interplay between laser and material parameters enables structuring down to the nanometer scale. Besides this, a unique aspect of laser processing technology is the possibility for material modifications at multiple (hierarchical) length scales, leading to the complex biomimetic micro- and nano-scale patterns, while adding a new dimension to structure optimization. This article reviews the current state of the art of laser processing methodologies, which are being used for the fabrication of bioinspired artificial surfaces to realize extraordinary wetting, optical, mechanical, and biological-active properties for numerous applications. The innovative aspect of laser functionalized biomimetic surfaces for a wide variety of current and future applications is particularly demonstrated and discussed. The article concludes with illustrating the wealth of arising possibilities and the number of new laser micro/nano fabrication approaches for obtaining complex high-resolution features, which prescribe a future where control of structures and subsequent functionalities are beyond our current imagination.

4. Polarization dependent spike formation on black silicon via ultrafast laser structuring

Abstract

A comparative experimental and theoretical investigation is presented that centres on the effects of structuring black silicon surfaces with linearly, circularly and azimuthally polarized laser pulses under SF6 ambient atmosphere. It is shown that the asymmetric elliptical micro-cone formations induced by linearly polarized beams result in variable light absorption due to their spatial asymmetry. By contrast, the use of azimuthally polarized beams leads to an omni-directionality of the elliptical cone orientation which is dependent on the local electric field during laser scanning. The locally variant electric field state that is azimuthally polarized leads to a selective conical orientation for the induced structures. The omni-directional conical distribution induced by azimuthal polarization produces similar, angle-independent absorption in the visible spectrum with the symmetrical conical structures that could only be realized with circularly polarized beams.

5. Biomimetic Omnidirectional Anti-reflective Glass via Direct Ultrafast Laser Nanostructuring

Abstract

We report on a single-step, biomimetic approach for the realization of omnidirectional transparent antireflective glass. In particular, it is shown that circularly polarized ultrashort laser pulses produce self-organized nanopillar structures on fused silica (SiO2). The laser induced nanostructures are selectively textured on the glass surface in order to mimic the spatial randomness, pillar-like morphology, as well as the remarkable anti-reflection properties found on the wings of the glasswing butterfly, Greta oto[1] and various Cicada species[2]. The artificial structures exhibit impressive anti-reflective properties, both in the visible and infrared frequency range. Accordingly, the laser-processed glass surfaces show reflectivity smaller than 1% for various angles of incidence in the visible spectrum for S-P linearly polarized configurations. While, in the near infrared spectrum, the laser-textured glass shows higher transmittance compared to the pristine. It is envisaged that our current results will revolutionize the technology of anti-reflective transparent surfaces and impact numerous applications from glass displays to optoelectronic devices.

Abstract

Predictive modelling represents an emerging field that combines existing and novel methodologies aimed to rapidly understand physical mechanisms and concurrently develop new materials, processes and structures. In the current study, previously-unexplored predictive modelling in a key-enabled technology, the laser-based manufacturing, aims to automate and forecast the effect of laser processing on material structures. The focus is centred on the performance of representative statistical and machine learning algorithms in predicting the outcome of laser processing on a range of materials. Results on experimental data showed that predictive models were able to satisfactorily learn the mapping between the laser input variables and the observed material structure. These results are further integrated with simulation data aiming to elucidate the multiscale physical processes upon laser-material interaction. As a consequence, we augmented the adjusted simulated data to the experimental and substantially improved the predictive performance, due to the availability of increased number of sampling points. In parallel, a metric to identify and quantify the regions with high predictive uncertainty, is presented, revealing that high uncertainty occurs around the transition boundaries. Our results can set the basis for a systematic methodology towards reducing material design, testing and production cost via the replacement of expensive trial-and-error based manufacturing procedure with a precise pre-fabrication predictive tool., Comment: 10 Figures

Abstract

The influence of material characteristics - i.e., type or surface texture - to wetting properties is nowadays increased by the implementation of ultrafast lasers for nanostructuring. In this account, we exposed multilayer thin metal film samples of different materials to a femtosecond laser beam at a 1030 nm wavelength. The interaction generated high-quality laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) of spatial periods between 740 and 790 nm and with maximal average corrugation height below 100 nm. The contact angle (CA) values of the water droplets on the surface were estimated and the values between unmodified and modified samples were compared. Even though the laser interaction changed both the surface morphology and the chemical composition, the wetting properties were predominantly influenced by the small change in morphology causing the increase in the contact angle of ~80%, which could not be explained classically. The influence of both surface corrugation and chemical composition to the wetting properties has been thoroughly investigated, discussed and explained. Abstract

We investigate the periodic structure formation upon intense femtosecond pulsed irradiation of chrome steel (100Cr6) for linearly polarised laser beams. The underlying physical mechanism of the laser induced periodic structures is explored, their spatial frequency is calculated and theoretical results are compared with experimental observations. The proposed theoretical model comprises estimations of electron excitation, heat transfer, relaxation processes, and hydrodynamics-related mass transport. Simulations describe the sequential formation of sub-wavelength ripples and supra-wavelength grooves. In addition, the influence of the laser wavelength on the periodicity of the structures is discussed. The proposed theoretical investigation offers a systematic methodology towards laser processing of steel surfaces with important applications.

Abstract

The aim of the present work is to investigate the efficiency of flat-plate solar panels in Greece for delivering solar energy. In this study, the solar panels are mounted on a two-axis tracker, which follows the daily path of the sun. In this context, the annual energy sums are estimated on such surfaces from hourly solar horizontal radiation values at forty-three locations, covering all of Greece. The solar horizontal radiation values are embedded in the typical meteorological years of the sites obtained from the PVGIS tool. All calculations use near-real surface-albedo values for the sites, and isotropic and anisotropic models are used to estimate the diffuse-inclined radiation. The analysis provides non-linear regression expressions for the energy sums as a function of time (month, season). The annual energy sums are found to vary between 2247 kWhm−2 and 2878 kWhm−2 under all-sky conditions with the anisotropic transposition model. Finally, maps of Greece showing the distribution of the annual and seasonal solar energy sums under all- and clear-sky conditions are derived for the first time, and these maps constitute the main innovation of this work.

Abstract

Hepatitis E virus (HEV), a common cause of viral hepatitis in developing countries, is mainly transmitted via the fecal–oral route, but also may be a prevalent hospital-transmitted agent among patients on regular hemodialysis due to parenteral transmission. Previous epidemiological studies among hemodialysis patients in Greece, using different diagnostic techniques, gave conflicting results. Τhe present study aimed to measure the exposure rate of hemodialysis patients of north-eastern Greece to HEV by estimating the overall seroprevalence, and to identify potential risk factors. Serum samples from all patients attending the hemodialysis centers of north-eastern Greece (n = 6) were tested for the presence of anti-HEV IgG antibodies using a modern and sensitive ELISA (Enzyme-linked Immunosorbent Assay) technique (Wantai). In total, 42 out of 405 hemodialysis patients were positive for anti-HEV IgG (10.4%), while all samples were negative for HEV RNA when tested using nested RT-PCR. HEV seropositivity among hemodialysis patients was significantly associated with area of residence and contact with specific animals (pork, deer). No association was found with religion, gender distribution and hemodialysis duration. This study showed an increased seroprevalence of HEV among hemodialysis patients in Greece. Agricultural or livestock occupation and place of residence seem to be independent factors that increase the risk of HEV infection. In conclusion, HEV infection calls for the regular screening of hemodialysis patients regardless of the hemodialysis duration or clinical symptoms.

Abstract Background Nowadays, Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF) is considered a routine procedure. However, unexpected difficulties do occasionally arise, especially when anterior neck pathologies or anatomical variations are encountered. In such cases, proactive thinking will allow surgeons to tailor appropriately their approach and eliminate surgical risks. Case presentation We present the case of a 50-year-old male patient suffering from left upper limb radiculopathy that underwent a C7-T1 ACDF combined with a hemithyroidectomy. Excision of the right thyroid lobe was offered to the patient because of a goiter found during the preoperative work-up. Furthermore, the hemithyroidectomy provided a wide surgical field so the ACDF performed without excreting excessive traction to the adjacent neck structures. Conclusions The patient had an uncomplicated post-operative. To our knowledge this is the first report of a planned hemithyroidectomy being carried out as the first step towards an ACDF procedure.

Abstract

The replication of complex structures found in nature represents an enormous challenge even for advanced fabrication techniques, such as laser processing. For certain applications, not only the surface topography needs to be mimicked, but often also a specific function of the structure. An alternative approach to laser direct writing of complex structures is the generation of laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS), which is based on directed self-organization of the material and allows fabrication of specific micro- and nanostructures over extended areas. In this work, we exploit this approach to fabricate complex biomimetic structures on the surface of steel 1.7131 formed upon irradiation with high repetition rate femtosecond laser pulses. In particular, the fabricated structures show similarities to the skin of certain reptiles and integument of insects. Different irradiation parameters are investigated to produce the desired structures, including laser repetition rate and laser fluence, paying special attention to the influence of the number of times the same area is rescanned with the laser. The latter parameter is identified to be crucial for controlling the morphology and size of specific structures. As an example for the functionality of the structures, we have chosen the surface wettability and studied its dependence on the laser processing parameters. Contact angle measurements of water drops placed on the surface reveal that a wide range of angles can be accessed by selecting the appropriate irradiation parameters, highlighting also here the prominent role of the number of scans.

Background: Hepatic erythrophagocytosis is augmented in NASH and amplifies inflammation and fibrosis. Although various pro-phagocytic signals have been identified on erythrocytes of NASH patients, the role of bound thrombospondin-1 (TSP-1), which acts as an “eat-me” signal, arginase-1, which regulates the levels of nitric oxide in erythrocytes, and phosphatidylethano-lamine (PE) which can amplify erythrophagocytosis and hepatic inflammation have not been explored. Abstract

Ultrafast laser processing with the formation of periodic surface nanostructures on the 15×(Ti/Zr)/Si multilayers is studied in order to the improve cell response. A novel nanocomposite structure in the form of 15×(Ti/Zr)/Si multilayer thin films, with satisfying mechanical properties and moderate biocompatibility, was deposited by ion sputtering on an Si substrate. The multilayer 15×(Ti/Zr)/Si thin films were modified by femtosecond laser pulses in air to induce the following modifications: (i) mixing of components inside of the multilayer structures, (ii) the formation of an ultrathin oxide layer at the surfaces, and (iii) surface nano-texturing with the creation of laser-induced periodic surface structure (LIPSS). The focus of this study was an examination of the novel Ti/Zr multilayer thin films in order to create a surface texture with suitable composition and structure for cell integration. Using the SEM and confocal microscopies of the laser-modified Ti/Zr surfaces with seeded cell culture (NIH 3T3 fibroblasts), it was found that cell adhesion and growth depend on the surface composition and morphological patterns. These results indicated a good proliferation of cells after two and four days with some tendency of the cell orientation along the LIPSSs.

48. Correction of the Solar Azimuth Discontinuity at Sunrise and Sunset

Abstract

Solar azimuth may become indefinite at sunrise and sunset. This discrepancy is corrected in the present work. The correction concerns application of Fourier–series analysis to the solar paths over a site during days when the problem arises. The result is the derivation of a new curve that is fitted with great accuracy to the daily solar azimuth values, thus bridging the gap of the discontinuity. A demonstration for the solar azimuth correction is given for 3 sites around the world (Athens, Stockholm, and Sydney). The correction can be applied to any solar geometry code; in this work the algorithm of the XRONOS code is selected without (XRONOS.bas, a BASIC programme) and with (XRONOS.m, a MATLAB code) the correction proposed. A corrected expression for the atmospheric refractive index at various altitudes is given in Appendix A as the refraction of solar right is treated in XRONOS.

Abstract

Predictive modeling represents an emerging field that combines existing and novel methodologies aimed to rapidly understand physical mechanisms and concurrently develop new materials, processes, and structures. In the current study, previously unexplored predictive modeling in a key-enabled technology, the laser-based manufacturing, aims to automate and forecast the effect of laser processing on material structures. The focus is centered on the performance of representative statistical and machine learning algorithms in predicting the outcome of laser processing on a range of materials. Results on experimental data showed that predictive models were able to satisfactorily learn the mapping between the laser's input variables and the observed material structure. These results are further integrated with simulation data aiming to elucidate the multiscale physical processes upon laser–material interaction. As a consequence, we augmented the adjusted simulated data to the experiment and substantially improved the predictive performance due to the availability of an increased number of sampling points. In parallel, an information-theoretic metric, which identifies and quantifies the regions with high predictive uncertainty, is presented, revealing that high uncertainty occurs around the transition boundaries. Our results can set the basis for a systematic methodology toward reducing material design, testing, and production cost via the replacement of expensive trial-and-error based manufacturing procedures with a precise pre-fabrication predictive tool. Abstract

Background and Aims: Hepatitis D virus (HDV) underdiagnosis remains common. We assessed the HDV screening and prevalence rates in HBsAg‐positive patients seen at tertiary liver centres throughout Greece as well as factors affecting HDV diagnosis. Methods: All adult HBsAg‐positive patients seen within the last 5 years were included. Non‐screened patients who visited or could be recalled to the clinics over a 6‐month period were prospectively tested for anti‐HDV. Results: Of 5079 HBsAg‐positive patients, 53% had anti‐HDV screening (41% before and 12% after study initiation). Pre‐study (8%–88%) and total screening rates (14%–100%) varied widely among centres. Screening rates were associated with older age, known risk group, elevated ALT, centre location and size and period of first visit. Anti‐HDV prevalence was 5.8% without significant difference in patients screened before (6.1%) or after study initiation (4.7%, p = 0.240). Anti‐HDV positivity was associated with younger age, parenteral drug use, born abroad, advanced liver disease and centre location. Overall, HDV RNA detectability rate was 71.6% being more frequent in anti‐HDV‐positive patients with elevated ALT, advanced liver disease and hepatitis B therapy. Conclusions: Anti‐HDV screening rates and recall capabilities vary widely among Greek liver clinics being higher in HBsAg‐positive patients of known risk group with active/advanced liver disease seen at smaller centres, while non‐medical factors are also important. Anti‐HDV prevalence varies throughout Greece being higher in patients born abroad with younger age, parenteral drug use and advanced liver disease.
