Site majeur de la culture chalcolithique de Fontbouisse (vers 2500 av. J.-C.), le village de Boussargues, près de Montpellier, fait l’objet de fouilles programmées dont le présent ouvrage constitue le premier volume de la publication exhaustive : il comprend d’une part l’étude du contexte naturel et culturel pour l’ensemble du site, d’autre part celle du secteur ouest et de ses trois unités d’habitation dont la fouille est aujourd’hui terminée. La problématique de cette recherche s’articule autour de trois points forts : l’architecture des édifices, l’organisation des espaces domestiques, l’habitat dans son territoire naturel et économique. Mise en œuvre par une équipe pluridisciplinaire, elle débouche sur des conclusions qui constituent une contribution fondamentale à la connaissance des sociétés néolithiques du sud de la France. This book is the first volume of the exhaustive publication of the excavations carried out in Boussargues, located near Montpellier and a majorsite of the Fontbouisse Chalcolithic culture (2500 BC). It includes the study of the natural and cultural surrounding of the site, and the study of the achieved excavation of the West area and its three habitations. The architecture of the buildings, the organization of the domestic space and the settlement in its natural and economical context are the three major orientations. Thanks to a versatile research team, the conclusions drawn are a fundamental contribution to the understanding of the Neolithic cultures from Southern France.

La forte densité des sites chalcolithiques dans l’arrière‑pays montpelliérain se traduit par l’établissement d’inventaires volumineux. Celui qui est présenté ici recense 32 villages à maisons de pierre sèche, 16 stations de plein air sans structures visibles, 14 grottes et abris sous roche, 34 dolmens et 16 tombes ovales sur le territoire de 8 communes, Boussargues étant situé au coeur de la zone prospectée. Enormous inventories traduce the high density of Chalcolithic sites around Montpellier. Here are presented 32 villages of drystone houses, 16 open air sites without obvious structures, 14 caves and shelters, 34 dolmens and 16 oval graves, spread over 8 communes. Boussargues is the center of this surveyed area.

Ce troisième volume des D.A.F. est consacré à la publication des actes de la table ronde sur la prospection archéologique organisée en 1982 par A. Ferdière et E. Zadora-Rio. Ce thème s’inscrit plus que jamais dans les orientations actuelles de l’archéologie, visant à une reconstitution de l’occupation du sol qui ne soit pas limitée aux seuls sites fouillés mais s’étende à leur environnement naturel et humain. La prospection s’est en effet affirmée comme une discipline à part entière pouvant permettre de déterminer les relations entre les sites et les phases d’exploitation des territoires qui leur sont associés. Compte tenu de l’impossibilité théorique et pratique d’une prospection exhaustive, les participants à cette table ronde se sont donné pour but, dans leurs communications et les discussions qui leur font suite, d’une part de confronter les choix d’objectifs et de méthodes, d’autre part d’apprécier la rentabilité et les manques de chaque stratégie adoptée. This third D.A.F. volume publishes papers presented at the symposium on landscape archaeology, organised in 1982 by A. Ferdière and E. Zadora-Rio. Fieldwork and landscape studies have today entered more than ever into present archaeological thinking. Such studies are not now limited just to evidence from excavated sites, but to the surrounding natural and human environment, permitting the reconstruction of earlier landscapes. Fieldwork, now established as a discipline in its own right, enables the relationship between actual sites and exploitation sequences of their associated landscape to be better understood. Taking into account the theoretical and practical impossibilities of total fieldwork, speakers at this symposium, in both their communications and during discussions, presented different choices of objectives and methods, and analysed the strengths and weaknesses of each technique adopted.

L’étude de l’habitat et de la société de l’Age du Fer a été concentrée principalement sur la fouille des oppida, des sites d’habitat en plaine les plus importants et des cimetières, sans qu’on les mettent en relation avec leur contexte rural. Il est évident pourtant que les changements économiques et socio‑politiques qui interviennent pendant l’Age du Fer ne peuvent pas être compris sans une connaissance approfondie de l’habitat rural. En Auvergne, un programme de prospections systématiques au sol a été mené entre 1979 et 1982, afin de replacer le site d’Aulnat‑Gandaillat et les oppida des environs dans leur contexte rural. La région a été divisée en zones de prospection homogènes sur le plan écologique et stratifiées en fonction de critères topographiques et agricoles. Dans chaque zone, un échantillon de 25 % a été systématiquement prospecté au sol. Les résultats font apparaître une transformation dans l’organisation de l’habitat rural au deuxième Age du Fer. European Iron Age research has traditionally concentrated on the study of major settlements and burial sites in isolation from their rural context. However, it is evident that the economic and social changes that take place in the Late Iran Age cannot be understood without a firm knowledge of rural settlement organisation. In the Auvergne, a programme of systematic surface survey has been carried out between 1979 and 1982, aimed at placing the settlement at Aulnat‑Gandaillat and the oppida of the region in their rural context. The region has been divided into ecological units, stratified following topographic and agricultural criteria, and surveyed using probability sampling techniques. The results include evidence of significant changes appearing in the organisation of rural settlement during the Late Iron Age.

This report is the principal outcome of a project commissioned by Historic England to establish as far as possible the evidence for concerns raised over a considerable time and by various bodies regarding the designation coverage for industrial heritage, in particular the listing of industrial buildings. It attempts to fulfil, in part, an historic suggestion for further designation analysis arising out of the Review of the Quality and Coverage of Lists (Cherry/Chitty 2010). The primary purpose of the project is to increase levels of knowledge about a particular type of heritage (Industrial) and the extent of designation of this asset type. Macclesfield was selected as the area for a case study (Appendix 7). This was for a number of reasons which included a well-defined industrial resource, associated with the silk and cotton industries. The extensive research and analysis of the East Cheshire Textile Mill Survey published in the RCHME volume of 1993 (Calladine and Fricker) included not just on-site processing but also administration buildings on separate sites and associated workers housing and community buildings, including libraries and places of worship. The breadth of the survey and gazetteer of mills provides a base from which to consider both the loss of the resource but also the designation of what remained.

It gives a historic overview of terraced housing and identifies important features of different types of terrace. Georgian and Victorian / early 20th century terraced housing encompasses a wide variety of types and there will be some variation in importance. A range of factors determine the significance of any historic building and it is necessary to understand the importance of an individual asset before considering changes. This will help decision makers to determine how easily a particular building will absorb change. It is therefore not the intention of this guide to provide hard and fast rules about acceptable levels of change, but rather to set out the issues and the areas of the terraced house which decision makers need to consider when deciding whether change is acceptable.
