The Milky Way's Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) differs dramatically from our local solar neighbourhood, both in the extreme interstellar medium conditions it exhibits (e.g. high gas, stellar, and feedback density) and in the strong dynamics at play (e.g. due to shear and gas influx along the bar). Consequently, it is likely that there are large-scale physical structures within the CMZ that cannot form elsewhere in the Milky Way. In this paper, we present new results from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) large programme ACES (ALMA CMZ Exploration Survey) and conduct a multi-wavelength and kinematic analysis to determine the origin of the M0.8$-$0.2 ring, a molecular cloud with a distinct ring-like morphology. We estimate the projected inner and outer radii of the M0.8$-$0.2 ring to be 79" and 154", respectively (3.1 pc and 6.1 pc at an assumed Galactic Centre distance of 8.2 kpc) and calculate a mean gas density $> 10^{4}$ cm$^{-3}$, a mass of $\sim$ $10^6$ M$_\odot$, and an expansion speed of $\sim$ 20 km s$^{-1}$, resulting in a high estimated kinetic energy ($> 10^{51}$ erg) and momentum ($> 10^7$ M$_\odot$ km s$^{-1}$). We discuss several possible causes for the existence and expansion of the structure, including stellar feedback and large-scale dynamics. We propose that the most likely cause of the M0.8$-$0.2 ring is a single high-energy hypernova explosion. To viably explain the observed morphology and kinematics, such an explosion would need to have taken place inside a dense, very massive molecular cloud, the remnants of which we now see as the M0.8$-$0.2 ring. We report JWST NIRCam observations of G0.253+0.016, the molecular cloud in the Central Molecular Zone known as The Brick, with the F182M, F187N, F212N, F410M, F405N, and F466N filters. We catalog 56,146 stars detected in all 6 filters using the crowdsource package. Stars within and behind The Brick exhibit prodigious absorption in the F466N filter that is produced by a combination of CO ice and gas. In support of this conclusion, and as a general resource, we present models of CO gas and ice and CO$_2$ ice in the F466N, F470N, and F410M filters. Both CO gas and ice may contribute to the observed stellar colors. We show, however, that CO gas does not absorb the Pf$\beta$ and Hu$\epsilon$ lines in F466N, but that these lines show excess absorption, indicating that CO ice is also present and contributes to observed F466N absorption. The most strongly absorbed stars in F466N are extincted by $\sim$ 2 magnitudes, corresponding to $>$ 80\% flux loss. This high observed absorption requires very high column densities of CO, requiring total CO column that is in tension with standard CO abundance and/or gas-to-dust ratios. There is therefore likely to be a greater CO/H$_2$ ratio (X$_{CO} > 10^{-4}$) and more dust per H$_2$ molecule ($>0.01$) in the Galactic Center than the Galactic disk. Ice and/or gas absorption is observed even in the cloud outskirts, implying that additional caution is needed when interpreting stellar photometry in filters that overlap with ice bands throughout our Galactic Center. The inner 300-500 pc of the Milky Way has some of the most extreme gas conditions in our Galaxy. Physical properties of the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ), including temperature, density, thermal pressure, and turbulent pressure, are key factors for characterizing gas energetics, kinematics, and evolution. The molecular gas in this region is more than an order of magnitude hotter than gas in the Galactic disk, but the mechanism responsible for heating the gas remains uncertain. We characterize the temperature for 16 regions, extending out to a projected radius of $\sim$450 pc. We observe \am\, J,K=(1,1)-(6,6) inversion transitions from SWAG (Survey of Water and Ammonia in the Galactic Center) using the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), and ammonia lines (J,K) = (8,8)-(14,14) using the 100\,m Green Bank Telescope. Using these two samples we create full Boltzmann plots for every source and fit two rotational temperature components to the data. For the cool component we detect rotational temperatures ranging from 20-80\,K, and for the hot component we detect temperature ranging from 210-580\,K. With this sample of 16 regions, we identify some of the most extreme molecular gas temperatures detected in the Galactic center thus far. We do not find a correlation between gas temperature and Galactocentric radius, and we confirm that these high temperatures are not exclusively associated with actively star-forming clouds. We report on the discovery of linear filaments observed in CO(1-0) emission for a $\sim2'$ field of view toward the Sgr E star forming region centered at (l,b)=(358.720$^\circ$, 0.011$^\circ$). The Sgr E region is thought to be at the turbulent intersection of the ''far dust lane'' associated with the Galactic bar and the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ). This region is subject to strong accelerations which are generally thought to inhibit star formation, yet Sgr E contains a large number of HII regions. We present $^{12}$CO(1-0), $^{13}$CO(1-0), and C$^{18}$O(1-0) spectral line observations from ALMA and provide measurements of the physical and kinematic properties for two of the brightest filaments. These filaments have widths (FWHM) of $\sim0.1$ pc and are oriented nearly parallel to the Galactic plane, with angles from the Galactic plane of $\sim2^\circ$. The filaments are elongated, with lower limit aspect ratios of $\sim$5:1. For both filaments we detect two distinct velocity components that are separated by about 15 km s$^{-1}$. In the C$^{18}$O spectral line data with $\sim$0.09 pc spatial resolution, we find that these velocity components have relatively narrow ($\sim$1-2 km s$^{-1}$) FWHM linewidths when compared to other sources towards the Galactic center. The properties of these filaments suggest that the gas in the Sgr E complex is being ''stretched'' as it is rapidly accelerated by the gravitational field of the Galactic bar while falling towards the CMZ, a result that could provide insight into the extreme environment surrounding this region and the large-scale processes which fuel this environment., Comment: 20 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

G0.253+0.016, commonly referred to as "the Brick" and located within the Central Molecular Zone, is one of the densest ($\approx10^{3-4}$ cm$^{-3}$) molecular clouds in the Galaxy to lack signatures of widespread star formation. We set out to constrain the origins of an arc-shaped molecular line emission feature located within the cloud. We determine that the arc, centred on $\{l_{0},b_{0}\}=\{0.248^{\circ}, 0.18^{\circ}\}$, has a radius of $1.3$ pc and kinematics indicative of the presence of a shell expanding at $5.2^{+2.7}_{-1.9}$ km s$^{-1}$. Extended radio continuum emission fills the arc cavity and recombination line emission peaks at a similar velocity to the arc, implying that the molecular and ionised gas are physically related. The inferred Lyman continuum photon rate is $N_{\rm LyC}=10^{46.0}-10^{47.9}$ photons s$^{-1}$, consistent with a star of spectral type B1-O8.5, corresponding to a mass of $\approx12-20$ M$_{\odot}$. We explore two scenarios for the origin of the arc: i) a partial shell swept up by the wind of an interloper high-mass star; ii) a partial shell swept up by stellar feedback resulting from in-situ star formation. We favour the latter scenario, finding reasonable (factor of a few) agreement between its morphology, dynamics, and energetics and those predicted for an expanding bubble driven by the wind from a high-mass star. The immediate implication is that G0.253+0.016 may not be as quiescent as is commonly accepted. We speculate that the cloud may have produced a $\lesssim10^{3}$ M$_{\odot}$ star cluster $\gtrsim0.4$ Myr ago, and demonstrate that the high-extinction and stellar crowding observed towards G0.253+0.016 may help to obscure such a star cluster from detection., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures. We present new 3 mm observations of the ionized gas toward the nuclear starburst in the nearby (D ~ 3.5 Mpc) galaxy NGC 253. With ALMA, we detect emission from the H40-alpha and He40-alpha lines in the central 200 pc of this galaxy on spatial scales of ~4 pc. The recombination line emission primarily originates from a population of approximately a dozen embedded super star clusters in the early stages of formation. We find that emission from these clusters is characterized by electron temperatures ranging from 7000-10000 K and measure an average singly-ionized helium abundance = 0.25 +/- 0.06, both of which are consistent with values measured for HII regions in the center of the Milky Way. We also report the discovery of unusually broad-linewidth recombination line emission originating from seven of the embedded clusters. We suggest that these clusters contribute to the launching of the large-scale hot wind observed to emanate from the central starburst. Finally, we use the measured recombination line fluxes to improve the characterization of overall embedded cluster properties, including the distribution of cluster masses and the fractional contribution of the clustered star formation to the total starburst, which we estimate is at least 50%., Comment: ApJ Accepted. 20 pages, 8 figures

Young massive clusters (YMCs) are the most compact, high-mass stellar systems still forming at the present day. The precursor clouds to such systems are, however, rare due to their large initial gas mass reservoirs and rapid dispersal timescales due to stellar feedback. Nonetheless, unlike their high-z counterparts, these precursors are resolvable down to the sites of individually forming stars, and hence represent the ideal environments in which to test the current theories of star and cluster formation. Using high angular resolution (1$^{\prime\prime}$ / 0.05pc) and sensitivity ALMA observations of two YMC progenitor clouds in the Galactic Centre, we have identified a suite of molecular line transitions -- e.g. c-C$_{3}$H$_{2} $($7-6$) -- that are believed to be optically thin, and reliably trace the gas structure in the highest density gas on star-forming core scales. We conduct a virial analysis of the identified core and proto-cluster regions, and show that half of the cores (5/10) and both proto-clusters are unstable to gravitational collapse. This is the first kinematic evidence of global gravitational collapse in YMC precursor clouds at such an early evolutionary stage. The implications are that if these clouds are to form YMCs, then they likely do so via the "conveyor-belt" mode, whereby stars continually form within dispersed dense gas cores as the cloud undergoes global gravitational collapse. In this paper we provide a comprehensive description of the internal dynamics of G0.253+0.016 (a.k.a. 'the Brick'); one of the most massive and dense molecular clouds in the Galaxy to lack signatures of widespread star formation. As a potential host to a future generation of high-mass stars, understanding largely quiescent molecular clouds like G0.253+0.016 is of critical importance. In this paper, we reanalyse Atacama Large Millimeter Array cycle 0 HNCO $J=4(0,4)-3(0,3)$ data at 3 mm, using two new pieces of software which we make available to the community. First, scousepy, a Python implementation of the spectral line fitting algorithm scouse. Secondly, acorns (Agglomerative Clustering for ORganising Nested Structures), a hierarchical n-dimensional clustering algorithm designed for use with discrete spectroscopic data. Together, these tools provide an unbiased measurement of the line of sight velocity dispersion in this cloud, $\sigma_{v_{los}, {\rm 1D}}=4.4\pm2.1$ kms$^{-1}$, which is somewhat larger than predicted by velocity dispersion-size relations for the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ). The dispersion of centroid velocities in the plane of the sky are comparable, yielding $\sigma_{v_{los}, {\rm 1D}}/\sigma_{v_{pos}, {\rm 1D}}\sim1.2\pm0.3$. This isotropy may indicate that the line-of-sight extent of the cloud is approximately equivalent to that in the plane of the sky. Combining our kinematic decomposition with radiative transfer modelling we conclude that G0.253+0.016 is not a single, coherent, and centrally-condensed molecular cloud; 'the Brick' is not a \emph{brick}. Instead, G0.253+0.016 is a dynamically complex and hierarchically-structured molecular cloud whose morphology is consistent with the influence of the orbital dynamics and shear in the CMZ., Comment: 29 pages, 19 figures, 1 table (including appendix). The evolution of molecular clouds in galactic centres is thought to differ from that in galactic discs due to a significant influence of the external gravitational potential. We present a set of numerical simulations of molecular clouds orbiting on the 100-pc stream of the Central Molecular Zone (the central $\sim500$ pc of the Galaxy) and characterise their morphological and kinematic evolution in response to the background potential and eccentric orbital motion. We find that the clouds are shaped by strong shear and torques, by tidal and geometric deformation, and by their passage through the orbital pericentre. Within our simulations, these mechanisms control cloud sizes, aspect ratios, position angles, filamentary structure, column densities, velocity dispersions, line-of-sight velocity gradients, spin angular momenta, and kinematic complexity. By comparing these predictions to observations of clouds on the Galactic Centre 'dust ridge', we find that our simulations naturally reproduce a broad range of key observed morphological and kinematic features, which can be explained in terms of well-understood physical mechanisms. We argue that the accretion of gas clouds onto the central regions of galaxies, where the rotation curve turns over and the tidal field is fully compressive, is accompanied by transformative dynamical changes to the clouds, leading to collapse and star formation. This can generate an evolutionary progression of cloud collapse with a common starting point, which either marks the time of accretion onto the tidally-compressive region or of the most recent pericentre passage. Low-mass M dwarfs represent the most common outcome of star formation, but their complex emergent spectra hinder detailed studies of their composition and initial formation. The measurement of isotopic ratios is a key tool that has been used to unlock the formation of our Solar System, the Sun, and the nuclear processes within more massive stars. We observed GJ 745AB, two M dwarfs orbiting in a wide binary, with the IRTF/iSHELL spectrograph. Our spectroscopy of CO in these stars at the 4.7 micron fundamental and 2.3 micron first-overtone rovibrational bandheads reveals 12C16O, 13C16O, and 12C18O in their photospheres. Since the stars are fully convective, the atomic constituents of these isotopologues should be uniformly mixed throughout the stars' interiors. We find that in these M dwarfs, both 12C/13C and 16O/18O greatly exceed the Solar values. These measurements cannot be explained solely by models of Galactic chemical evolution, but require that the stars formed from an ISM significantly enriched by material ejected from an exploding core-collape supernova. These isotopic measurements complement the elemental abundances provided by large-scale spectroscopic surveys, and open a new window onto studies of Galactic evolution, stellar populations, and individual systems., Comment: 11 pages, 4 data files, 3 figures, 2 tables. We present new radio-frequency interferometric maps of emission from the 14NH3, 15NH3, and 14NH2D isotopologues of ammonia, and the 12CH3OH and 13CH3OH isotopologues of methanol toward Sgr B2(N). With a resolution of ~3'' (0.1 pc), we are able to spatially resolve emission from two hot cores in this source and separate it from absorption against the compact HII regions in this area. The first (N1) is the well-known v = 64 km/s core, and the second (N2) is a core 6'' to the north at v = 73 km/s. Using emission from 15NH3, and hyperfine satellites of 14NH3 metastable transitions we estimate the 14NH3 column densities of these sources and compare them to those of 14NH2D. We find that the ammonia deuteration fraction of N2 is roughly 10-20 times higher than in N1. We also measure an [15NH3/14NH3] abundance ratio that is apparently 2-3 times higher in N2 than N1, which could indicate a correspondingly higher degree of nitrogen fractionation in N2. In addition, we find that N2 has a factor of 7 higher methanol abundance than N1. Together, these abundance signatures suggest that N2 is a younger source, for which species characteristic of grain chemistry at low temperatures are currently being actively liberated from ice mantles, and have not yet reached chemical equilibrium in the warm gas phase. The high D abundance and possible high 15N abundance in NH3 found in N2 are interesting for studying the potential interstellar origin of abundances in primitive solar system material., Comment: 36 pages, 13 figures. We report the discovery of the first 14NH3 (2,2) maser, seen in the Sgr B2 Main star forming region near the center of the Milky Way, using data from the Very Large Array radio telescope. The maser is seen in both lower resolution (3" or ~0.1 pc) data from 2012 and higher resolution (0''.1 or ~1000 AU) data from 2018. In the higher resolution data ammonia (2,2) maser emission is detected toward 5 independent spots. The maser spots are not spatially or kinematically coincident with any other masers in this region, or with the peaks of the radio continuum emission from the numerous ultracompact and hypercompact \hii\, regions in this area. While the (2,2) maser spots are spatially unresolved in our highest resolution observations, they have unusually broad linewidths of several kilometers per second, which suggests that each of these spots consists of multiple masers tracing unresolved velocity structure. No other ammonia lines observed in Sgr B2 Main are seen to be masers, which continues to challenge theories of ammonia, maser emission that predict simultaneous maser emission in multiple ammonia transitions., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, accepted to ApJ Letters. We present an analysis of gas densities in the central R=300 parsecs of the Milky Way, focusing on three clouds: GCM-0.02-0.07 (the 50 km/s cloud), GCM-0.13-0.08 (the 20 km/s cloud), and GCM0.25+0.01 (the "Brick"). Densities are determined using observations of the J=(3-2), (4-3), (5-4), (10-9), (18-17), (19-18), (21-20), and (24-23) transitions of the molecule HC3N. We find evidence of at least two excitation regimes for HC3N and constrain the low-excitation component to have a density less than 10^4 cm^-3 and the high-excitation component to have a density between 10^5 and 10^6 cm^-3. This is much less than densities of 10^7 cm^-3 that are found in Sgr B2, the most actively star-forming cloud in the Galactic center. This is consistent with the requirement of a higher density threshold for star formation in the Galactic center than is typical in the Galactic disk. We are also able to constrain the column density of each component in order to determine the mass fraction of 'dense' (n>10^5 cm^-3) gas for these clouds. We find that this is ~15% for all three clouds. Applying the results of our models to ratios of the (10-9) and (3-2) line across the entire central R=300 pc, we find that the fraction of gas with n>10^4 cm^-3 increases inward of a radius of ~140 pc, consistent with the predictions of recent models for the gas dynamics in this region. The star formation rate in the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) is an order of magnitude lower than predicted according to star formation relations that have been calibrated in the disc of our own and nearby galaxies. Understanding how and why star formation appears to be different in this region is crucial if we are to understand the environmental dependence of the star formation process. Here, we present the detection of a sample of high-mass cores in the CMZ's "dust ridge" that have been discovered with the Submillimeter Array as part of the CMZoom survey. These cores range in mass from ~ 50 - 2150 Msun within radii of 0.1 - 0.25 pc. All appear to be young (pre-UCHII), meaning that they are prime candidates for representing the initial conditions of high-mass stars and sub-clusters. We report that at least two of these cores ('c1' and 'e1') contain young, high-mass protostars. We compare all of the detected cores with high-mass cores in the Galactic disc and find that they are broadly similar in terms of their masses and sizes, despite being subjected to external pressures that are several orders of magnitude greater - ~ 10^8 K/cm^3, as opposed to ~ 10^5 K/cm^3. The fact that > 80% of these cores do not show any signs of star-forming activity in such a high-pressure environment leads us to conclude that this is further evidence for an increased critical density threshold for star formation in the CMZ due to turbulence., Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures, 3 tables. This review compiles the results of recent studies of molecular gas conditions in the central six hundred parsecs of our Galaxy. The review begins by placing our Galactic center into context with the rest of our galaxy. It next discusses the wealth of previous research on the Galactic center, before focusing on what is known about the molecular interstellar medium in this region. It focuses especially on a surge in interest in this region and new studies conducted in the last five years. It concludes by highlighting open questions that remain, and the potential for new facilities such as ALMA to make progress in resolving these uncertainties., Comment: Review from the Proceedings of the Frank N. We investigate the correlation of HCN 1-0 with dense gas mass in the Galactic center. We find that in general (on the ~10 pc size scale of individual molecular cloud cores) HCN 1-0 is well correlated with the dense molecular gas mass using a standard log-log relationship. However individual clouds in this environment show systematic deviations from this relationship that contribute to around 0.75 dex of scatter. Most notably, Sgr B2, the most massive cloud in the Galactic center, has an integrated HCN 1-0 intensity of cloud less than half its mass, and several other clouds including GCM-0.02-0.07 show an enhancement of HCN 1-0 by a factor of 2-3 relative to clouds of comparable mass. We also find that HCN 1-0 is more intense for a given mass in the large-scale diffuse emission in the central 300 parsecs compared to the compact emission from individual cloud cores. We identify the two primary sources of scatter in the relationship between HCN 1-0 and dense gas mass to be self-absorption (which reduces the observed HCN 1-0 intensity of Sgr B2) and variations in HCN abundance, which appear to increase the brightness of HCN 1-0 in GCM-0.02-0.07 and other clouds. We find that these sources of scatter would only contribute to an ~10% error in the dense gas mass inferred from the HCN 1-0 intensity in the Galactic center. However, the implied order of magnitude HCN abundance variations between Galactic center clouds, and the systematic nature of these variations warn of potential biases in the use of HCN as dense gas mass tracer in more extreme environments, such as AGN and shock-dominated regions. Finally, we also investigate other tracers having transitions near 3 mm, finding that HNCO, HNC and HCO+ largely behave like HCN, while HC3N, and CH3CN are higher fidelity tracers of the amount of gas in clouds like Sgr B2 that suffer from strong self-absorption of the HCN 1-0 line. We present an analysis of archival ISO observations of pure-rotational lines of H2 in three pointings in the central 3 parsecs of the Galaxy: toward the Southwest region and Northeast region of the Galactic center Circumnuclear Disk, and toward the supermassive black hole Sgr A*. We detect pure rotational lines from 0-0 S(0) to S(13), as well as a number of rovibrationally excited transitions. From the pure rotational lines, we are able to describe the molecular gas with three discrete temperature components: a `hot' component between 500-600 K, a `hotter' component at 1250-1350 K, and a `hottest' component at > 2600 K. Toward Sgr A*, likely due to a combination of poorer baselines and weaker emission, we only detect a single hot component, at 1100 K. The observed excitation is consistent with heating via C-shocks. We also fit a continuous temperature distribution to the the S(1) through S(7) lines by assuming a power-law distribution of temperatures. We measure power law indices of n = 3.22 for the Northeast region and n = 2.83 for the Southwest region, with a smaller index indicating a higher fraction of warm gas. These indices are lower than those measured for other galaxies or other Galactic center clouds, which are measured to have n= 4-6. If we extrapolate this temperature distribution down to a cutoff temperature of 50 K, then the total molecular gas mass that we would measure for the Southwest (Northeast) region is 32 (140) % of the total molecular gas mass inferred from the dust emission, and 26 (125) % of the total molecular gas mass inferred from the CO emission for these regions. We present NH3 and H64a+H63a VLA observations of the Radio Arc region, including the M0.20-0.033 and G0.10-0.08 molecular clouds. These observations suggest the two velocity components of M0.20-0.033 are physically connected in the south. Additional ATCA observations suggest this connection is due to an expanding shell in the molecular gas, with the centroid located near the Quintuplet cluster. The G0.10-0.08 molecular cloud has little radio continuum, strong molecular emission, and abundant CH3OH masers, similar to a nearby molecular cloud with no star formation: M0.25+0.01. To unambiguously diagnose the detailed physical mechanisms and the evolutionary status of high-mass star-forming regions (HMSFRs), we have performed 0.4" ($\sim1000$ AU) resolution observations towards NGC7538S and IRS1, using the Plateau de Bure Interferometer (PdBI). This paper presents a joint analysis of the 1.37 mm continuum emission and the line intensity of 15 molecular species. Assuming local thermal equilibrium, we derived molecular column densities and molecular abundances for each internal gas substructure which is spatially resolved. These derived quantities are compared with a suite of 1-D gas-grain models. NGC7538S is resolved into at least three dense gas condensations. Despite the comparable continuum intensity of these condensations, their differing molecular line emission is suggestive of an overall chemical evolutionary trend from the northeast to the southeast. Since these condensations are embedded within the same parent gas core, their differing chemical properties are the most likely due to the different warm-up histories, rather than the different dynamic timescales. Despite remaining spatially unresolved, in IRS1 we detect abundant complex organic molecules, indicating that IRS1 is the most chemically evolved hot molecular core presented here. We observe a continuum that is dominated by absorption features with at least three strong emission lines, potentially from $\rm CH_3OH$. The $\rm CH_3OH$ lines which are purely in emission have higher excitation than the ones showing purely absorption. Potential reasons for that difference are discussed. This is the first comprehensive comparison of observations of the high-mass cores NGC7538S and IRS1 and a chemical model. We have found that different chemical evolutionary stages can coexist in the same natal gas core. Using spectral-line observations of HNCO, N2H+, and HNC, we investigate the kinematics of dense gas in the central ~250 pc of the Galaxy. We present SCOUSE (Semi-automated multi-COmponent Universal Spectral-line fitting Engine), a line fitting algorithm designed to analyse large volumes of spectral-line data efficiently and systematically. Unlike techniques which do not account for complex line profiles, SCOUSE accurately describes the {l, b, v_LSR} distribution of CMZ gas, which is asymmetric about Sgr A* in both position and velocity. Velocity dispersions range from 2.6 km/s<\sigma<53.1 km/s. A median dispersion of 9.8 km/s, translates to a Mach number, M_3D>28. The gas is distributed throughout several "streams", with projected lengths ~100-250 pc. We link the streams to individual clouds and sub-regions, including Sgr C, the 20 and 50 km/s clouds, the dust ridge, and Sgr B2. Shell-like emission features can be explained by the projection of independent molecular clouds in Sgr C and the newly identified conical profile of Sgr B2 in {l ,b, v_LSR} space. These features have previously invoked supernova-driven shells and cloud-cloud collisions as explanations. We instead caution against structure identification in velocity-integrated emission maps. Three geometries describing the 3-D structure of the CMZ are investigated: i) two spiral arms; ii) a closed elliptical orbit; iii) an open stream. While two spiral arms and an open stream qualitatively reproduce the gas distribution, the most recent parameterisation of the closed elliptical orbit does not. Finally, we discuss how proper motion measurements of masers can distinguish between these geometries, and suggest that this effort should be focused on the 20 km/s and 50 km/s clouds and Sgr C., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 30 pages (including appendices), 22 figures, 3 tables. The Kleinmann-Low nebula in Orion (Orion-KL) is the nearest example of a high-mass star-forming environment. For the first time, we complemented 1.3 mm Submillimeter Array (SMA) interferometric line survey with IRAM 30 m single-dish observations of the Orion-KL region. Covering a 4 GHz bandwidth in total, this survey contains over 160 emission lines from 20 species (25 isotopologues), including 11 complex organic molecules (COMs). At a spatial resolution of 1200 AU, the continuum substructures are resolved. Extracting the spectra from individual substructures and providing the intensity-integrated distribution map for each species, we studied the small-scale chemical variations in this region. Our main results are: (1) We identify lines from the low-abundance COMs CH3COCH3 and CH3CH2OH, as well as tentatively detect CH3CHO and long carbon-chains C6H and HC7N. (2) We find that while most COMs are segregated by type, peaking either towards the hot core (e.g., N-bearing species) or the compact ridge (e.g., O-bearing species like HCOOCH3 and CH3OCH3), while the distributions of others do not follow this segregated structure (e.g., CH3CH2OH, CH3OH, CH3COCH3). (3) We find a second velocity component of HNCO, SO2, 34SO2, and SO lines, which may be associated with a strong shock event in the low-velocity outflow. (4) Temperatures and molecular abundances show large gradients between central condensations and the outflow regions, illustrating a transition between hot molecular core and shock-chemistry dominated regimes. We present new observations of the quiescent giant molecular cloud GCM0.253+0.016 in the Galactic center, using the upgraded Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array. Observations were made at wavelengths near 1 cm, at K (24 to 26 GHz) and Ka (27 and 36 GHz) bands, with velocity resolutions of 1-3 km/s and spatial resolutions of ~0.1 pc, at the assumed 8.4 kpc distance of this cloud. The continuum observations of this cloud are the most sensitive yet made, and reveal previously undetected emission which we attribute primarily to free-free emission from external ionization of the cloud. In addition to the sensitive continuum map, we produce maps of 12 molecular lines: 8 transitions of NH3 -- (1,1),(2,2),(3,3),(4,4),(5,5),(6,6),(7,7) and (9,9), as well as the HC3N (3-2) and (4-3) lines, and CH3OH 4(-1) - 3(0) the latter of which is known to be a collisionally-excited maser. We identify 148 CH3OH 4(-1) - 3(0) (36.2 GHz) sources, of which 68 have brightness temperatures in excess of the highest temperature measured for this cloud (400 K) and can be confirmed to be masers. The majority of these masers are concentrated in the southernmost part of the cloud. We find that neither these masers nor the continuum emission in this cloud provide strong evidence for ongoing star formation in excess of that previously inferred by the presence of an H2O maser., Comment: 33 pages, 4 tables, 9 figures; ApJ Accepted

At a distance of 8 kpc, the center of our Galaxy is the nearest galactic nucleus, and has been the subject of numerous key projects undertaken by great observatories such as Chandra, Spitzer, and Herschel. However, there are still no surveys of molecular gas properties in the Galactic center with less than 30" (1 pc) resolution. There is also no sensitive polarization survey of this region, despite numerous nonthermal magnetic features apparently unique to the central 300 parsecs. In this paper, we outline the potential the VLASS has to fill this gap. We assess multiple considerations in observing the Galactic center, and recommend a C-band survey with 10 micro-Jy continuum RMS and sensitive to molecular gas with densities greater than 10^4 cm^{-3}, covering 17 square degrees in both DnC and CnB configurations ( resolution ~5"), totaling 750 hours of observing time. Ultimately, we wish to note that the upgraded VLA is not just optimized for fast continuum surveys, but has a powerful correlator capable of simultaneously observing continuum emission and dozens of molecular and recombination lines. This is an enormous strength that should be fully exploited and highlighted by the VLASS, and which is ideally suited for surveying the center of our Galaxy., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures, a White Paper submitted to provide input in planning the Very Large Array Sky Survey

We present a survey of molecules in a sample of Galactic center molecular clouds using the Karl G. Jansky Very large Array, which includes M0.25+0.01, the clouds near Sgr A, and Sgr B2. The molecules detected are primarily NH3 and HC3N; in Sgr B2-N we also detect nonmetastable NH3, vibrationally-excited HC3N, torsionally-excited CH3OH, and numerous isotopologues of these species. 36 GHz Class I CH3OH masers are ubiquitous in these fields, and in several cases are associated with new NH3 (3,3) maser candidates. We also find that NH3 and HC3N are depleted or absent toward several of the highest dust column density peaks identified in submillimeter observations, which are associated with water masers and are thus likely in the early stages of star formation., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, to appear in Proceedings of the IAU Symposium No. 303, "The Galactic Center: Feeding and Feedback in a Normal Galactic Nucleus"
