The early Paleoproterozoic (ca. 2.5–2.2 Ga) represents a critical juncture in Earth history, marking the inception of an oxygenated atmosphere while bearing witness to potentially multiple widespread and severe glaciations. Deciphering the nature of this glacial epoch and its connection with atmospheric oxygenation has, however, proven difficult, hindered by a reliance on disputed stratigraphic correlations given the paucity of direct radiometric age constraints. Nowhere is this more acute than within the South African Transvaal Supergroup: Here, while the loss of oxygen-sensitive mass-independent sulfur isotope fractionation (S-MIF) has been reported from both the Duitschland and Rooihoogte formations, divided opinion surrounding the time-equivalence of these units has prompted authors to argue for vastly different oxygenation trajectories. Addressing this debate, we present a depositional Re-Os age (2443 ± 33 Ma) from diamictite samples preserved in drillcore of the upper Duitschland Formation. The 100-million-year separation between the Duitschland Formation and its previously presumed equivalent reveals at least two isolated disappearances of S-MIF, requiring that the Great Oxidation Event was dynamic and proceeded via discrete oxygenation episodes whose structure remains incompletely understood. Importantly, our revised framework aligns the lower Duitschland diamictite with the low-latitude glacigenic Makganyene Formation, supporting hypotheses of widespread regional, and potentially global, early Paleoproterozoic glaciation. The Upper Cretaceous and Lower Paleogene Table Mountain Shoshonite lava flows and their proposed source, the Ralston Buttes intrusions, provide insight into the volcanic history of the Colorado Front Range. This study affirms the long-held hypothesis linking the extrusive Table Mountain lava flows and their intrusive equivalents at Ralston Buttes through major- and trace- element geochemistry. Systematic 40Ar/39Ar geochronology from all flows and intrusive units refines the eruptive history, improves precision on previously reported ages, and provides tighter constraints on the position of the K-Pg boundary in this location. Four flows are recognized on North and South Table mountains outside of Golden, Colorado. Flow 1 (66.5 ± 0.3 Ma, all ages reported with 2σ uncertainty) is the oldest, most compositionally distinct flow and is separated from younger flows by approximately 35 m of sedimentary deposits of the Denver Formation. Stratigraphically adjacent flows 2 (65.8 ± 0.2 Ma), 3 (65.5 ± 0.3 Ma), and 4 (65.9 ± 0.3 Ma) are compositionally indistinguishable. Lavas (referred to here as unit 5) that form three cone-shaped structures (shown by this study to be volcanic vents of a new unit 5) on top of North Table Mountain are compositionally similar to other units, but yield an age almost 20 m.y. younger (46.94 ± 0.15 Ma). Geochemistry and geochronology suggest that the rim phase of the Ralston plug (65.4 ± 0.2 Ma) is a reasonable source for flows 2, 3, and 4. All units are shoshonites--potassic basalts containing plagioclase, augite, olivine, and magnetite phenocrysts--and plot in the continental-arc field in tectonic discrimination diagrams. A continental-arc setting coupled with Late Cretaceous to early Paleogene ages suggest the high-K magmatism is associated with Laramide tectonism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The rhenium-osmium (187Re-187Os) system is a highly versatile chronometer that is regularly applied to a wide range of geological and extraterrestrial materials. In addition to providing geo- or cosmo-chronological information, the Re-Os system can also be used as a tracer of processes across a range of temporal (millennial to gigayear) and spatial scales (lower mantle to cryosphere). An increasing number of sulfide minerals are now routinely dated, which further expands the ability of this system to refine mineral exploration models as society moves toward a new, green economy with related technological needs. An expanding range of natural materials amenable to Re-Os geochronology brings additional complexities in data interpretation and the resultant translation of measured isotopic ratios to a properly contextualized age. Herein, we provide an overview of the 187Re-187Os system as applied to sedimentary rocks, sulfides, and other crustal materials and highlight further innovations on the horizon. Additionally, we outline next steps and best practices required to improve the precision of the chronometer and establish community-wide data reduction procedures, such as the decay constant, regression technique, and software packages to use. These best practices will expand the utility and viability of published results and essential metadata to ensure that such data conform to evolving standards of being findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable (FAIR).
