LPSc-acc; An analysis of the revised physics needs and recent progress in the technology of supreconducting RF cavities have led to major changes in the specification and in the design for a Superconducting Proton Linac (SPL) at CERN. Compared with the first conceptual design report (CERN 2000-012) the beam energy is almost doubled (3.5 GeV instead of 2.2 GeV), while the length of the linac is reduced by 40% and the repetition rate is reduced to 50 Hz. The basic beam power is at a level of 4-5 MW and the approach chosen offers enough margins for upgrandes. With this high beam power, the SPL can bethe proton driver for an ISOL-type radioactive ion beam facility of the next generation (EURISOL), and for a neutrino facility based on superbeam + beta-beam or on muon decay in storage ring (neutrino factory). The SPL can also replace the Linac2 and PS Booster in the low-energy part ofthe CERN proton accelerator complex, improving significantly the beam performance in terms of brightness and intensity for the benefit of all users including the LHC and its luminosity upgrade. Decommissioned LEP klystrons and RF equipment are used to provide RF power at a frequency of 352.2 MHz in the low-energy part of the accelerator. Beyond 90 MeV, the RF frequency is doubled to take advantage of more compact normal-conducting accelerating structures up to an energy of 180 MeV. From there, state-of-the-art, high-gradient, bulk-niobium superconducting cavities accelerate the beam up to its final energy of 3.5 GeV. The overall design approach is presented, together with the progress that has been achieved since the publication of the first conceptual design report.

In the frame of the SPL (Superconducting Proton Linac) study at CERN, a new 160 MeV proton injector for the CERN PS Booster is presently under development. This linear accelerator (Linac4) would not only be a first step towards a future, multi-MW superconducting linac, but would also improve in the medium term both the beam availability and beam quality for CERN’s proton users. Within the framework of the Linac4 study and with the support of the EU funded Joint Research Activity HIPPI (High Intensity Pulsed Proton Injectors), a 3 MeV test stand is under construction at CERN. This test stand will explore some of the most critical issues of the linac, such as the beam dynamics at low energy, with special emphasis on the chopper line that has been designed to generate the required time structure of the beam, to clean the beam halo, and to match it to the subsequent RF structures. In this context, a new Beam Shape and Halo Monitor is under construction. The beam acceleration will be performed by an RFQ that is being developed in France within the IPHI collaboration between CEA and CNRS. Moreover, the test stand will be equipped with an additional 1 MW RF klystron to test different 352 MHz RF structures that are being developed for the Linac4.

The CLIC study of a high energy (0.5 - 5 TeV), high luminosity (1034 - 1035 cm-2 sec-1) e± linear collider is presented. Beam acceleration using high frequency (30 GHz) normal-conducting structures operating at high accelerating fields (150 MV/m) significantly reduces the length and, in consequence, the cost of the linac. Based on new beam and linac parameters derived from a recently developed set of general scaling laws for linear colliders, the beam stability is shown to be similar to lower frequency designs in spite of the strong wake-field dependency on frequency. A new cost-effective and efficient drive beam generation scheme for RF power production by the so-called "Two Beam Acceleration (TBA)" method is described. It uses a thermionic gun and a fully-loaded normal-conducting linac operating at low frequency (937 MHz) to generate and accelerate the drive beam bunches, and RF multiplication by funnelling in compressor rings to produce the desired bunch structure. Recent 30 GHz hardware developments and results from the CLIC Test Facility (CTF), assessing the feasibility of the scheme, are described.

PETS performance degradations caused by finite Q-values and small tune errors are estimated. A simple explanation of the recently discovered group velocity enhancement of the loss factor is given.

The progress of the Compact LInear Collider (CLIC) study of a multi-TeV (0.5 - 5 TeV) high-luminosity (5'1033 to 1.5'1035 cm-2 sec-1) e± linear collider based on Two-Beam Acceleration (TBA) is presented. The length and, in consequence, the cost of the overall complex is reduced by the use of high accelerating fields (150 MV/m), which are generated by specially damped 30 GHz normal-conducting accelerating structures. The large amount of RF power (400 MW/m) required to generate these high fields is provided by a novel RF power generating scheme which is potentially both cost and power efficient. After summarising the progress made in the developments of 30 GHz components and the performance obtained in the present phase of the CLIC Test Facility (CTF2), the design of a new test facility (CTF3), which will demonstrate the feasibility of the RF power generating scheme, is described

The loss factor, a quantity linked to the energy lost by a point-like charge when traversing an accelerating (or decelerating) structure, can be computed using programs which solve Maxwell's equations in time domain and provide the correct result within the limitations inherent to the numerical simulation process. An alternative method, commonly used, consists in the derivation of the loss factor from the parameter R/Q, which is computed using codes operating in frequency-domain. Recent calculations of the loss factors for disk-loaded structures performed with the two methods have produced diverging results. The discrepancy of the results is a function of the group velocity and can be eliminated by introducing a correction term in the formula linking the loss factor to the R/Q obtained from frequency-domain calculations.

We discuss a new approach to two-beam acceleration. The energy for RF production is initially stored in a long-pulse electron beam which is efficiently accelerated to about 1.2 GeV by a fully loaded conventional, low-frequency (approx. 1 GHz) linac. The beam pulse length is twice the length of the high-gradient linac. Segments of this long pulse beam are compressed using combiner rings to create a sequence of higher peak power drive-beams with gaps between. This train of drive beams is distributed from the end of the linac in the opposite direction to the main beam down a common transport line so that each drive beam can power a section of the main linac. After a 180-degree turn, each high-current, low-energy drive beam is decelerated in low-impedance decelerator structures, and the resulting power is used to accelerate the low-current, high-energy beam in the main linac. The method discussed here seems relatively inexpensive, is very flexible, and can be used to accelerate beams for linear colliders over the entire frequency and energy range.

Three versions of the CLIC Transfer Structure (CTS) have been studied by means of simulations using the MAFIA set of codes. Of these the high impedance version has been built as a prototype and tested in the CTF (CLIC Test Facility). The other two versions were designed with the aim of suiting the requirements of the two Drive Beam Generation schemes presently being pursued for the CLIC scheme. Here we report the simulation results for th CTS to be used in the multi-drive beam generation scheme.
