2. Pedagogies for Peacebuilding in Higher Education: How and Why Should Higher Education Institutions Get Involved in Teaching for Peace?

Abstract

This article makes the case for why higher education institutions should take the teaching of peacebuilding seriously. It is co-authored by a team from four countries (Bosnia and Herzegovina, Rwanda, Colombia and the United Kingdom) who were involved in a small international research project looking at "Pedagogies for Peacebuilding". Together they are trying to answer questions about the legitimacy of bringing these discussions into higher education and lecturer/student relationships. The authors discuss the spaces in which peacebuilding can be usefully considered within higher education curricula; the significance of higher education in helping young people develop habits of peace; and how the citizens and leaders of the future might be helped to understand the meaning and importance of peacebuilding. In the course of their argument, the authors consider the intention and impact of different pedagogical approaches.

The Community University Partnership Programme (CUPP) has been operating at the University of Brighton for the past 10 years. This article explores the different types of space we think need to exist to support a variety of partnership and engaged work. We therefore explore our understandings of shared or "engaged" spaces as a physical, virtual and relational phenomenon in this context.

8. Re-Defining Post-Literacy in a Changing World. Education Research Paper.

Abstract

Current practice in postliteracy (PL) instruction was reviewed. In all cases, PL programs were considered programs of further learning. Some PL programs were concentrating on further developing literacy skills, whereas others were concentrating on skill training, group formation, or further education based on nonformal curricula. Although adult literacy class graduates were the primary target of current PL programs, others (especially younger persons) were often admitted. The main provision for PL is in the form of development of PL materials--reading materials of an improving nature, intended to promote central visions of development. The aim of PL is to help adults of all kinds practice literacy in real situations by using found texts, instead of helping them learn further literacy skills using texts specially prepared for that learning. The staffing of PL is usually the same as for initial literacy training (ILT), and specific training for PL is virtually nonexistent. Although the traditional model of PL as the provision of further specially prepared learning programs for completers of ILT programs remains strong (most likely because of a lack of clarity about new approaches to PL), the evidence that the traditional model of PL is failing was clear. It was proposed that PL be redefined as the provision of assistance to all those who feel that they are having difficulties with the practice of literacy in real situations, and that such assistance be provided outside the classroom, as well as in it, at the time and point of need. Abstract

This study aims to ascertain the potential of this way of working in transforming the attitudes and identities of students growing up in a post conflict context, in terms of reaffirming their sense of citizenship and belonging beyond the ethnic divisions caused by the conflicts in their parents’ generation. It also looks at the transferability of different models of student community engagement and at those that might be relevant both to BiH and to other societies in transition.

Abstract

This resource book is intended to help trainers working on postliteracy programs in agricultural areas of West Africa. Its primary focus is on the role of literacy in the management of irrigation systems and farmer cooperatives and on program administration activities such as recordkeeping, registration, and credit. However, strategies for meeting the specific training needs of other groups, such as women's cooperatives, vegetable growers, and youth associations, are also examined. The format of sections introduced by a story is used to demonstrate the importance of storytelling as a media for disseminating information in West Africa. The following topics are examined in the book's main sections: the role of literacy in agricultural development, designing a postliteracy course, planning a lesson, organizing learning activities, making and using materials, and village projects. Appended are the following: a short course in blackboard drawing; games for literacy and numeracy; and instructions for making a rod puppet, binding books, a freestanding flipchart; and examples of account sheets used by farmers in Senegal.
