High energy electron scattering of liquid water (H2O) at near-ambient temperature and pressure was performed in a transmission electron microscope (TEM) to determine the radial distribution of water, which provides information on intra- and intermolecular spatial correlations. A recently developed environmental liquid cell enables formation of a stable water layer, the thickness of which is readily controlled by pressure and flow rate adjustments of a humid air stream passing between two silicon nitride (Si3N4) membranes. The analysis of the scattering data is adapted from the x-ray methodology to account for multiple scattering in the H2O:Si3N4 sandwich layer. For the H2O layer, we obtain oxygen–oxygen (O–O) and oxygen–hydrogen (O–H) peaks at 2.84 Å and 1.83 Å, respectively, in good agreement with values in the literature. Molecular dynamics simulations were performed to characterize the ablation process induced by a picosecond infrared laser (PIRL) operating in the regime of desorption by impulsive vibrational excitation (DIVE) of a model peptide (lysozyme)/counter-ion system in aqueous solution. The simulations were performed for ablation under typical experimental conditions found within a time-of-flight mass spectrometer (TOF-MS), that is in vacuum with an applied electric field (E = ± 107 V/m), for up to 2 ns post-ablation and compared to the standard PIRL-DIVE ablation condition (E = 0 V/m). Further, a simulation of ablation under an extreme field condition (E = 1010 V/m) was performed for comparison to extend the effective dynamic range of the effect of the field on charge separation. The results show that the plume dynamics were retained under a typical TOF-MS condition within the first 1 ns of ablation. Efficient desorption was observed with more than 90% of water molecules interacting with lysozyme stripped off within 1 ns post-ablation. The processes of ablation and desolvation of analytes were shown to be independent of the applied electric field and thus decoupled from the ion separation process. Unlike under the extreme field conditions, the electric field inside a typical TOF-MS was shown to modify the ions' motion over a longer time and in a soft manner with no enhancement to fragmentation observed as compared to the standard PIRL-DIVE. The study indicates that the PIRL-DIVE ablation mechanism could be used as a new, intrinsically versatile, and highly sensitive ion source for quantitative mass spectrometry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A simulation formalism for the nonlinear response of vibrational excitons is presented and applied to the OH stretching vibrations of neat liquid H2O. The method employs numerical integration of the Schrödinger equation and allows explicit treatment of fluctuating transition frequencies, vibrational couplings, dipole moments, and the anharmonicities of all these quantities, as well as nonadiabatic effects. The split operator technique greatly increases computational feasibility and performance. The electrostatic map for the OH stretching vibrations in liquid water employed in our previous study [A. Paarmann et al., J. Chem. Phys. 128, 191103 (2008)] is presented. The two-dimensional spectra are in close agreement with experiment. The fast 100 fs dynamics are primarily attributed to intramolecular mixing between states in the two-dimensional OH stretching potential. Small intermolecular couplings are sufficient to reproduce the experimental energy transfer time scales. Two-dimensional infrared photon echo and pump probe studies of the OH stretch vibration provide a sensitive probe of the correlations and couplings in the hydrogen bond network of liquid water. The nonlinear response is simulated using numerical integration of the Schrödinger equation with a Hamiltonian constructed to explicitly treat intermolecular coupling and nonadiabatic effects in the highly disordered singly and doubly excited vibrational exciton manifolds. The simulated two-dimensional spectra are in close agreement with our recent experimental results. The high sensitivity of the OH stretch vibration to the bath dynamics is found to arise from intramolecular mixing between states in the two-dimensional anharmonic OH stretch potential. This work exploits the passive phase stabilization of diffractive optics to implement heterodyne detection of the complete χ[sup (5)] tensor of liquid CS[sub 2] as an example of a simple liquid. This approach permits the use of two different colors for the excitation, probe, and detection beam protocols and enables full optimization of the signal with respect to discrimination against lower order cascaded third-order responses. This work extends the previous study of polarization selectivity, in combination with heterodyne detection, to all independent polarization components to provide further insight into the origins of the fifth-order response and its connection to the multitime correlation of the liquid dynamics. The characteristic feature that clearly distinguishes the direct fifth-order response from lower order cascades is the pronounced ridge along the τ[sub 4] axis (probe pulse delay) with very rapid decay along the τ[sub 2] axis (excitation pulse delay). This observation is in contrast to recent related work using one-color homodyne detection. With the determination of the direct fifth-order and cascaded third-order signal amplitudes made possible by heterodyne detection, this difference can be attributed to cross terms between the direct fifth-order and cascaded third-order terms inherent to homodyne detection under phase matching conditions used to discriminate against cascades. In support of theoretical treatments, the previously predicted enhancement of rephasing pathways for certain polarization components has been observed. However, even for these tensor elements the remarkable feature is the very rapid decay in the nuclear coherence along τ[sub 2]. The experiment is predicated on the ability of a 2-quantum transition involving the Raman overtone to rephase the nuclear coherence. Photoelectrons with excess kinetic energy corresponding to several absorbed photons above the work function have been measured from atomically clean Cu(110) and Cu(100) surfaces under ultrahigh vacuum conditions. The power dependence of the photoemission yield does not follow a simple power law dependence corresponding to the number of photons absorbed. This behavior is reminiscent of other above threshold ionization (ATI) or tunnel ionization (TI) processes observed for atoms in the gas phase. The photoelectrons are generated with laser pulsewidths less than 100 fs in duration and peak powers as low as 100 MW/cm2. These intensities are on the order of 105 times lower than that required to observe similar phenomena in the gas phase. The relatively low intensities and correlation with surface roughness suggests a contribution from a surface enhancement mechanism. Thermal heating and space charge effects have been ruled out, and the possibility of electric field enhancement at the surface due to the coupling of photons into surface plasmons is discussed. The nonlinear yield and enhancement of the photoemission produced by short pulse excitation needs to be considered when discussing photoinduced hot electron reaction channels at metal surfaces. © 1995 American Institute of Physics. We report the formation of waveguides in Raman-active KGd(WO4)2 with a focused, high repetition rate femtosecond laser. Parallel guiding regions, formed to either side of the laser-induced damage track, supported TE and TM modes that coupled efficiently to optical fiber at telecom wavelengths. Micro-Raman spectroscopy of the guiding regions revealed the preservation of the characteristic 768 and 901 cm-1 Raman mode intensities. Raman gain with 6% efficiency was demonstrated for the 768 cm-1 Raman line by pumping the waveguide with an infrared 80 ps source, the first time Raman gain has been reported in laser formed waveguides.
