2. 'Carne Neemerranner'--Telling Places and History on the Ground

Abstract

In the language of the Tebrikunna (Cape Portland) clan, "Carne Neemerranner" is "telling ground". It is also what we call the research methodology designed for "Meeting at Bark Hut", a recent community-engaged Aboriginal history project conducted in northeast Tasmania. The project examined, retraced and explored one brief, but poignant, episode in Tasmania's colonial contact history--a meeting between the parties of George Augustus Robinson, colonial agent charged with the "conciliation" and removal of Trouwunnan (Tasmanian) clanspeople from the Tasmanian mainland, and that most likely included Mannalargenna, one of the last Trouwunnan leaders still living in his own clancountry at the time (1830). While this episode and encounter has profound connotations for present-day Tasmanian Aborigines, its significance has largely been overlooked by academic historians. "Meeting at Bark Hut" was conceived as an opportunity to redress this deficit, to allow the story of this event to be told and to come alive in a dynamic and culturally relevant way. This article offers some insight into the meaning and method of the project from both theoretical and practical perspectives. (Contains 2 figures.)

Abstract

This report addresses the problems associated with the derivation of aircraft performance characteristics. The emphasis is on segments which are a part of a mission profile. In particular, the following areas are studied: takeoff, climb, cruise, descent and glide, turning, and landing. The generalized approach to performance estimates is first presented. Next, appropriate solutions are derived. Last, sensitivity relationships are developed. The relationships determine changes in the performance characteristics as a result of an aircraft configuration change. This permits rapid evaluation of the performance variations for any segment of a mission profile. author)

Abstract

A technique is developed for correcting heat transfer data for conduction effects in the vicinity of the leading edges of wind tunnel models. A solution is obtained by solving the general heat equation as applied to a cylindrical leading edge under a step heat impulse by means of Fourier and Laplace transforms. The local temperature is found to be a power series in time for thin skin models. By comparison of wind tunnel data with the theory developed it was ascertained that only three terms in the series (second degree curve in time) adequately represented the data. The coefficient of the linear time term is shown to be directly proportional to the applied heating rate. This theory is applied to several hypersonic wind tunnel tests and results in the elimination of large conduction errors in the heat transfer coefficient data. (Author), Report on Systems 620A.
