6. An Analysis of Specific Mathematics Course Content for Scientists and Engineers, Final Report.

Abstract

Reported are the results of a pilot study which attempted to determine general patterns of common course content for scientists and engineers, and what specific course content would be of most value to them. Questionnaires were mailed to biologists, chemists, physicists, and engineers in nine states. Over two hundred of these respondents were personally interviewed. An item analysis was made for each course in each specialization. Some of the significant trends noted in the study include: (1) identical course recommendations for different specializations might involve entirely different content and emphasis, (2) related specializations did not always recommend the same topics, (3) mathematicians were generally less selective than scientists and engineers in judging the importance of topics, (4) predictions were made for increased use of computers and applied statistics, and (5) most respondents wanted courses to integrate theory and applications. 7. A National Study of Mathematics Requirements for Scientists and Engineers. Final Report.

Abstract

The National Study of Mathematics Requirements for Scientists and Engineers is concerned with establishing the mathematics experiences desired for the many specializations in science and engineering, such as microbiology, organic chemistry, electrical engineering, and molecular physics. An instruction and course content sheet and a course recommendation form were sent to over 9,000 scientists and engineers. The data were analyzed and are reported in quintiles for each specialization. Some of the general conclusions were as follows: (1) mathematics courses should have equal emphasis on theory and application, (2) with the exception of group theory, there was little need for courses such as functional analysis, modern algebra, and mathematical logic, (3) most of the high recommendations were for applied courses such as vectors, the many types of differential equations, applied statistics, and machine computation, and (4) comparisons of categories within each specialization showed little differences in recommendations for most specializations. Abstract

Theoretical models in the jetting regime for symmetric and asymmetric impact of thin plates predict the mass and velocity of jetted material upon oblique impact. However, experimental constraints on the amount of material which form jets upon oblique impact are not known. A series of preliminary experiments were conducted in which tungsten (W) flyer plates at speeds of 1.5 to 2.0 km/s were obliquely impacted into carbon targets at 30 deg in the regime of jetting, yielding radiation temperatures in the about 3200 K range. Both framing-camera and flash X-ray imaging were conducted. Broad cm-sized craters induced by jet ejecta on 2024 Al witness plates were used to infer jet mass. We infer, from measured witness plate crater volumes, that jet masses in the range of 0.01 to 0.06 g are produced by a 32 mm diameter, 6 mm thick W impactor. This is about one to two orders of magnitude less than those calculated from present theoretical models. In contrast, in refractory material experiments, the mass of gabbro ejecta trapped in styrofoam is 0.52 g, which is similar to that calculated.

Abstract

An instructor taught one group of college freshmen using a modified form of traditional mathematics by including most of the concepts in modern texts, but also assigning a large number of problems for homework; the second group used a modern textbook with less problems for practice. The modified traditional group performed significantly better in achievement. (BR)
