This article comments on security risk assessment of process-control systems. Despite publicity and talk about the vulnerabilities of control systems, there has been very little articulation of the relative risk to particular vertical market implementation of control systems. Physical and cyber security must undergo an evaluation since in many instances physical security measures rely on cyber components and vice versa. Risk assessment is a requirement to secure process control network. Without specific solution requirements, corporations and process-control network vendors are incapable of taking action to improve the security posture of the current or future process environments. Users view risk assessments skeptically since many feel they will end up having to buy new technology to secure SCADA networks. Security risk assessment is the first step in ongoing process that secures the process environment. As the first step, it lays the foundation for all parts of securing the process environment and must be done with due diligence in order to return valve to the corporation.
