The Mississippian-era site of Cahokia was the largest Native American city north of Mexico. Archaeologists have long speculated about possible astronomic alignments and spatial relationships in the layout of its 100+ earthen mounds. In this paper LiDAR imagery, historic documents, ethnohistoric and archaeologic data are used to assess the site relative to astronomic and landscape alignments. New findings show how Monks, Rattlesnake, Powell and other mounds are aligned to the Sun, Moon, and Milky Way. Additionally, these alignments intersect prominent bluffs to the east and southeast that appear to have been used as horizon markers.

We present [Fe/H] values for globular clusters associated with the Fornax, Sagittarius, and Canis Major dwarf spheroidal galaxies based on the light curve properties of their ab-type RR Lyrae variables. Fornax is a classical dwarf spheroidal containing five globular clusters and exhibiting a spheroidal shape in the sky. Sagittarius and Canis Major, possess six and four globular clusters, respectively, and have both been tidally disrupted to a significant degree by the gravitational field of the Milky Way galaxy. Based on an analysis of the periods and light curve amplitudes of 76 globular cluster ab-type RR Lyraes in Fornax, 103 in Sagittarius, and 29 in Canis Major, we find mean metallicities of |$\langle$| [Fe/H] |$\rangle$| = –1.67 ± 0.05, –1.76 ± 0.12, and –1.69 ± 0.25 for the globular clusters in Fornax, Sagittarius, and Canis Major, respectively. Given the similarity of these three values, and coupled with the well-established correlation between the mean metal abundance and total luminosity for dwarf spheroidal galaxies, we conclude that the absolute V -band magnitudes of these three galaxies are indistinguishable to within ∼0.8 mag. We present the High- z Evolution of Large and Luminous Objects (HELLO) project, a set of |$\sim \!30$| high-resolution cosmological simulations aimed to study Milky Way analogues (⁠|$M_\star \sim 10^{10-11}$|   |${\mathrm{M}}_{\odot }$|⁠) at high redshift (⁠|$z\sim [2-4]$|⁠). Based on the numerical investigation of a hundred astrophysical objects, HELLO features an updated scheme for chemical enrichment and the addition of local photoionization feedback. Independently of redshift and mass, our galaxies exhibit a smooth progression along the star formation main sequence until |$M_\star \sim \!10^{10.5}$|⁠ , around which our sample at |$z \sim 4$| remains mostly unperturbed while the most massive galaxies at |$z \sim 2$| reach their peak star formation rate (SFR) and its subsequent decline, due to a mix of gas consumption and stellar feedback. While active galactic nucleus feedback remains subdominant with respect to stellar feedback for energy deposition, its localized nature likely adds to the physical processes leading to declining SFRs. The phase in which a galaxy in our mass range can be found at a given redshift is set by its gas reservoir and assembly history. Finally, our galaxies are in excellent agreement with various scaling relations observed with the Hubble Space Telescope and the JWST , and hence can be used to provide the theoretical framework to interpret current and future observations from these facilities and shed light on the transition from star-forming to quiescent galaxies. We combine stellar orbits with the abundances of the heavy, r -process element europium and the light, |$\alpha$| -element, silicon to separate in situ and accreted populations in the Milky Way (MW) across all metallicities. At high orbital energy, the accretion-dominated halo shows elevated values of [Eu/Si], while at lower energies, where many of the stars were born in situ , the levels of [Eu/Si] are lower. These systematically different levels of [Eu/Si] in the MW and the accreted halo imply that the scatter in [Eu/ |$\alpha$| ] within a single galaxy is smaller than previously thought. At the lowest metallicities, we find that both accreted and in situ populations trend down in [Eu/Si], consistent with enrichment via neutron star mergers. Through compiling a large data set of abundances for 54 globular clusters (GCs), we show that differences in [Eu/Si] extend to populations of in situ /accreted GCs. We interpret this consistency as evidence that in r -process elements GCs trace the star formation history of their hosts, motivating their use as sub-Gyr timers of galactic evolution. Furthermore, fitting the trends in [Eu/Si] using a simple galactic chemical evolution model, we find that differences in [Eu/Si] between accreted and in situ MW field stars cannot be explained through star formation efficiency alone. Finally, we show that the use of [Eu/Si] as a chemical tag between GCs and their host galaxies extends beyond the Local Group, to the halo of M31 – potentially offering the opportunity to do Galactic Archaeology in an external galaxy. Stars in the Galactic disk are born on cold, nearly circular orbits with small vertical excursions. After their birth, their orbits evolve, driven by small- or large-scale perturbations in the Galactic disk's gravitational potential. Here, we study the vertical motions of young stars over their first few orbital periods, using a sample of OBA stars from Gaia E/DR3, which includes radial velocities and ages τ from LAMOST. We construct a parametric model for the time evolution of the stellar orbits' mean vertical actions J z as a function of Galactocentric radius, R GC. Accounting for data uncertainties, we use Markov Chain Monte Carlo analysis in annuli of Galactocentric radius (R GC) to constrain the model parameters. Our best-fit model shows a remarkably linear increase of vertical actions with age across all Galactocentric radii examined. Orbital heating by random scattering could offer a straightforward interpretation for this trend. However, various other dynamical aspects of the Galactic disk, such as stars being born in a warped disk, might offer alternative explanations that could be tested in the future. We present a hierarchical Bayesian pipeline, BP3M, that measures positions, parallaxes, and proper motions (PMs) for cross-matched sources between Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images and Gaia—even for sparse fields (N * < 10 per image)—expanding from the recent GaiaHub tool. This technique uses Gaia-measured astrometry as priors to predict the locations of sources in HST images, and is therefore able to put the HST images onto a global reference frame without the use of background galaxies/QSOs. Testing our publicly available code in the Fornax and Draco dwarf spheroidal galaxies, we measure PMs that are a median of 8–13 times more precise than Gaia DR3 alone for 20.5 < G < 21 mag. We are able to explore the effect of observation strategies on BP3M astrometry using synthetic data, finding an optimal strategy to improve parallax and position precision at no cost to the PM uncertainty. Using 1619 HST images in the sparse COSMOS field (median nine Gaia sources per HST image), we measure BP3M PMs for 2640 unique sources in the 16 < G < 21.5 mag range, 25% of which have no Gaia PMs; the median BP3M PM uncertainty for 20.25 < G < 20.75 mag sources is 0.44 mas yr−1 compared to 1.03 mas yr−1 from Gaia, while the median BP3M PM uncertainty for sources without Gaia-measured PMs (20.75 < G < 21.5 mag) is 1.16 mas yr−1. The statistics that underpin the BP3M pipeline are a generalized way of combining position measurements from different images, epochs, and telescopes, which allows information to be shared between surveys and archives to achieve higher astrometric precision than that from each catalog alone. With a luminosity similar to that of Milky Way dwarf spheroidal systems like Sextans, but a spatial extent similar to that of ultra-diffuse galaxies, Andromeda (And) XIX is an unusual satellite of M31. To investigate the origin of this galaxy, we measure chemical abundances for And XIX derived from medium-resolution (R ∼ 6000) spectra from the Deep Extragalactic Imaging Multi-Object Spectrograph on the Keck II telescope. We coadd 79 red giant branch stars, grouped by photometric metallicity, in order to obtain a sufficiently high signal-to-noise ratio to measure 20 [Fe/H] and [ α /Fe] abundances via spectral synthesis. The latter are the first such measurements for And XIX. The mean metallicity we derive for And XIX places it ∼2 σ higher than the present-day stellar mass–metallicity relation for Local Group dwarf galaxies, potentially indicating it has experienced tidal stripping. A loss of gas and associated quenching during such a process, which prevents the extended star formation necessary to produce shallow [ α /Fe]–[Fe/H] gradients in massive systems, is also consistent with the steeply decreasing [ α /Fe]–[Fe/H] trend we observe. In combination with the diffuse structure and disturbed kinematic properties of And XIX, this suggests tidal interactions, rather than galaxy mergers, are strong contenders for its formation. We research the elemental abundances in Galactic planetary nebulae (PNe) compared with those of their stellar progenitors (red giant branch and asymptotic giant branch, AGB, stars), to explore and quantify the expected—i.e., due to AGB evolution or condensation onto grains—differences. We gleaned the current literature for the nebular abundances while we used the APOGEE DR 17 survey data for the stellar sample. We examined the elements in common between the nebular and stellar samples, namely, C, N, O, Fe, and S. We confirm that iron in PNe is mostly entrapped in grains, with an average depletion 〈D[Fe/H]〉 = 1.741 ± 0.486 dex, and we disclose a weak correlation between iron depletion and the [O/H] abundance, D[Fe/H] = (6.6003 ± 2.443) × [O/H] + (1.972 ± 0.199). Sulfur may also be mildly depleted in PNe, with 〈D[S/H]〉 = 0.179 ± 0.291 dex. We also found an indication of nitrogen enrichment for PNe 〈E[N/H]〉 = 0.393 ± 0.421 dex, with maximum enrichment (0.980 ± 0.243) occurring for the PNe whose progenitors have gone through the hot-bottom burning. The carbon enrichment is 〈E[C/H]〉 = 0.337 ± 0.463 dex when measured for the general PN populations. To understand new facets of situated freedom, this study explores the socio-cultural process of 'freedom' in everyday situations from the trajectory equifinality approach (TEA) perspective. The concept is important for TEA, which describes aspects of 'free' choice as constructed through communication between self and society. This study elaborates on and enriches the argument of the situated freedom by considering the authors' shared experience (bifurcation point; BFP) using the three layers model of genesis (TLMG). Consequently, we depict that freedom is not only located within a situation but also in semiotic communication. Situated freedom for the authors in BFP involves semiotic communication, including imagining the hyper-generalised affective semiotic field for others, represented by the flow of feelings 'comfort for all'. Amanogawa (the Milky Way), an organic metaphor for the TLMG mountain range, extends this idea. This study demonstrates how freedom-related feelings experienced by the authors emerge in the communication of their socio-cultural context. We present the stellar value-added catalogue based on the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) Early Data Release. The catalogue contains radial velocity and stellar parameter measurements for |$\simeq$| 400 000 unique stars observed during commissioning and survey validation by DESI. These observations were made under conditions similar to the Milky Way Survey (MWS) currently carried out by DESI but also include multiple specially targeted fields, such as those containing well-studied dwarf galaxies and stellar streams. The majority of observed stars have |$16\lt r\lt 20$| with a median signal-to-noise ratio in the spectra of |$\sim$| 20. In the paper, we describe the structure of the catalogue, give an overview of different target classes observed, as well as provide recipes for selecting clean stellar samples. We validate the catalogue using external high-resolution measurements and show that radial velocities, surface gravities, and iron abundances determined by DESI are accurate to 1 km s−1, 0.3 dex, and |$\sim$| 0.15 dex respectively. We also demonstrate possible uses of the catalogue for chemo-dynamical studies of the Milky Way stellar halo and Draco dwarf spheroidal. The value-added catalogue described in this paper is the very first DESI MWS catalogue. The next DESI data release, expected in less than a year, will add the data from the first year of DESI survey operations and will contain approximately 4 million stars, along with significant processing improvements. Hot, |$\log (T/\mathrm{K})$| |$\sim$| 7.5, gas was recently discovered in the Milky Way in extragalactic sightlines. In order to determine its location, here we present sightlines to Galactic X-ray binaries (XRBs) passing through the Interstellar Medium (ISM). In this pilot study, we investigate absorption features of S |$_{\mathrm{XVI}}$|⁠ , Si |$_{\mathrm{XIV}}$|⁠ , and Ne |$_{\mathrm{X}}$| in the spectra of three XRBs, namely 4U 1735–44, 4U 1820–30, and Cyg X-2, using Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating archival observations. We do not detect any of these lines. We determine the 2 |$\sigma$| upper limit for the equivalent widths of the undetected absorption lines and the column densities of the corresponding ions. We note that the 2 |$\sigma$| upper limits for S |$_{\mathrm{XVI}}$| K |$\alpha$| and Si |$_{\mathrm{XIV}}$| K |$\alpha$| are an order of magnitude smaller than those previously detected in the extragalactic sightlines. Our finding suggests that if any gas at |$\log (T/\mathrm{K})$| |$\gt\ 7$| is present in the Galactic ISM, it is unlikely to be ubiquitous. This is an important result because it implies that S |$_{\mathrm{XVI}}$|⁠ , Si |$_{\mathrm{XIV}}$|⁠ , and Ne |$_{\mathrm{X}}$| absorption detected in extragalactic sightlines is not from the ISM, but is likely from a hot gas phase in the extraplanar region beyond the ISM or in the extended Circumgalactic Medium. We present the initial data for the |$(J = 3 \rightarrow 2)$| transition of |$^{13}\text{CO}$| obtained from the central molecular zone (CMZ) of the Milky Way as part of the CO Heterodyne Inner Milky Way Plane Survey 2 (CHIMPS2). Covering |$359^{\circ } \le l \le 1^{\circ }$| and |$|b| \le 0.5^{\circ }$| with an angular resolution of 19 arcsec, velocity resolution of 1 km s |$^{-1}$|⁠ , and rms |$\Delta {T_{\rm A}^{*}} = 0.59\, \mathrm{K}$| at these resolutions, our observations unveil the complex structure of the CMZ molecular gas in improved detail. Complemented by the |$\rm {^{12}CO}$| CHIMPS2 data, we estimate a median optical depth of |$\tau _{13} = 0.087$|⁠. The preliminary analysis yields a median |$^{13}\text{CO}$| column-density range equal to |$N(^{13}{\rm CO}) = 2{\!-\!}5 \times 10^{18}\, \mathrm{cm}^{-2}$|⁠ , median H |$_{2}$| column density equal to |$N(\mathrm{H_{2}}) = 4 \times 10^{22}\, \mathrm{cm}^{-2}$| to |$1 \times 10^{23}\, \mathrm{cm}^{-2}$|⁠. We derive |$N({\rm H_{2}})$| -based total mass estimates of |$M({\rm H}_{2}) = 2{\!-\!}6 \times 10^{7}\, \mathrm{M}_{\odot }$|⁠ , in agreement with previous studies. We analyse the relationship between the integrated intensity of |$^{13}\text{CO}$| and the surface density of compact sources identified by Herschel Hi-GAL, and find that younger Hi-GAL sources detected at 500  |$\rm{\mu m}$| but not at 70  |$\rm{\mu m}$| follow the dense gas of the CMZ more closely than those that are bright at 70  |$\rm{\mu m}$|⁠. An increasing number of exoplanets have been discovered in the Milky Way galaxy, which is also known to harbour a super-massive black hole (Sagittarius A*) at its centre. Here, we investigate how the central black hole (BH) activity may affect the evolution of exoplanets in our Galaxy. Accreting BHs emit high-energy radiation – extreme ultraviolet and X-rays – which can lead to XUV photoevaporation of the planetary atmospheres. We evaluate the atmospheric mass-loss using both theoretical estimates of the BH radiative output and observational constraints on the past activity history of Sgr A*. The resulting mass-loss is analysed as a function of the galactocentric distance. For the first time, we compute the exoplanet atmospheric evolution under BH irradiation by explicitly including the temporal evolution of the central luminosity output (i.e. the BH activity history). We obtain that Sgr A* could have a major impact on exoplanets located in the inner region of the Galaxy (e.g. Galactic bulge); a significant fraction of the atmospheric mass can be removed by BH irradiation; and in extreme cases, the initial atmosphere may be completely stripped away. Such mass-loss can have important consequences on the atmospheric chemistry and potential biological evolution. We discuss the physical implications for planetary habitability, and we also briefly consider the case of stellar-mass BHs. The shape of the low-mass (faint) end of the galaxy stellar mass function (SMF) or ultraviolet luminosity function (UVLF) at |$z \gtrsim 6$| is an open question for understanding which galaxies primarily drove cosmic reionization. Resolved photometry of Local Group low-mass galaxies allows us to reconstruct their star formation histories, stellar masses, and UV luminosities at early times, and this fossil record provides a powerful 'near-far' technique for studying the reionization-era SMF/UVLF, probing orders of magnitude lower in mass than direct HST / JWST observations. Using 882 low-mass (⁠|$M_{\rm star}\lesssim 10^{9}\, \rm {M_\odot }$|⁠) galaxies across 11 Milky Way (MW)- and Local Group-analogue environments from the FIRE-2 cosmological baryonic zoom-in simulations, we characterize their progenitors at |$z=6\!-\!9$|⁠ , the mergers/disruption of those progenitors over time, and how well their present-day fossil record traces the high-redshift SMF. A present-day galaxy with |$M_{\rm star}\sim 10^5\, \rm {M_\odot }$| (⁠|$\sim 10^9\, \rm {M_\odot }$|⁠) had |$\approx 1$| (⁠|$\approx 30$|⁠) progenitors at |$z\approx 7$|⁠ , and its main progenitor comprised |$\approx 100~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| (⁠|$\approx 10~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠) of the total stellar mass of all its progenitors at |$z\approx 7$|⁠. We show that although only |$\sim 15~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| of the early population of low-mass galaxies survives to present day, the fossil record of surviving Local Group galaxies accurately traces the low-mass slope of the SMF at |$z \sim 6 \!-\! 9$|⁠. We find no obvious mass dependence to the mergers and accretion, and show that applying this reconstruction technique to just low-mass galaxies at |$z = 0$| and not the MW/M31 hosts correctly recovers the slope of the SMF down to |$M_{\rm star} \sim 10^{4.5}\, \rm {{\rm M}_{\odot }}$| at |$z \gtrsim 6$|⁠. This article describes a two-year project conducted by a high school astronomy club, in which they built a radio telescope to measure Doppler-shifted radio signals from within the Milky Way galaxy. The club analyzed the data and found that the orbital velocity of matter around the galactic center remains relatively constant as one travels outward, supporting the existence of dark matter. The article provides detailed information on the telescope design and data collection process. It also discusses the velocity profiles of the Milky Way galaxy based on intensity vs. relative velocity plots, which indicate that the velocities do not conform to the expected trend if all the mass is concentrated at the galactic center. This suggests the presence of dark matter distributed differently from visible matter, consistent with previous studies. Constraints on the binary fraction of massive young stellar objects (mYSOs) are important for binary and massive star formation theory. Here, we present speckle imaging of 34 mYSOs located in the Large Magellanic Cloud (1/2 Z ⊙) and Small Magellanic Cloud (∼1/5 Z ⊙), probing projected separations in the 2000 to 20,000 au (at angular scales of 0.″02–0.″2) range, for stars above 8 M ⊙. We find two wide binaries in the Large Magellanic Cloud (from a sample of 23 targets), but none in a sample of 11 in the Small Magellanic Cloud, leading us to adopt a wide binary fraction of 9% ± 5% and <5%, respectively. We rule out a wide binary fraction greater than 35% in the Large Magellanic Cloud and 38% in the Small Magellanic Cloud at the 99% confidence level. This is in contrast to the wide binary fraction of mYSOs in the Milky Way (presumed to be 1 Z ⊙), which within the physical parameter space probed by this study is ∼15%–60% from the literature. We argue that while selection effects could be responsible for the lower binary fraction observed, it is more likely that there are underlying physical mechanisms responsible for the observed properties. This indicates that metallicity and environmental effects may influence the formation of wide binaries among massive stars. Future larger, more statistically significant samples of high-mass systems in low-metallicity environments for comparison to the Milky Way, are essential to confirm or repudiate our claim. AbstractWomen are increasingly turning to mHealth apps as primary sources for breastfeeding education and support. The rising prevalence of mHealth apps presents a unique opportunity to explore their impact on women’s breastfeeding experiences. Understanding user perspectives of these apps, especially focusing on their persuasive design aspects, can offer valuable insights for enhancing maternal and child health outcomes. These insights can optimize these technologies to align with user values and promote sustained healthy behaviors. This study aimed to undertake an empirical exploration of users’ experiences with the persuasive design features employed in the Milky Way mHealth app and align the findings with human values within the value-sensitive design (VSD) framework. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with a group of women who had used the Milky Way app. Interview data were analyzed using an inductive thematic approach. To provide insight into users’ values mediated by the app, a deductive analysis complemented by a data-driven inductive approach was performed. Data analysis was supported by NVivo data-management software. Findings from the study demonstrate that the persuasive design elements in the Milky Way app significantly influence users’ experiences. The analysis provided four primary themes: Informative, Easy to use, Credible, and Social connection. Overall, participants praised the app’s trustworthy educational content and support features as valuable resources for addressing breastfeeding challenges and obtaining reliable support. Participants expressed concerns about information overload and emphasized the importance of personalized support and evidence-based tailored recommendations. The results demonstrated that users’ values were expressed and embedded within the app. The analysis indicated an alignment between the app design features and the values and opinions of the users within the VSD framework. This study interprets women’s perspectives utilizing the Milky Way app and highlights the significance of its evidenced-based educational and support features. Further investigation into potential user values like privacy, remains crucial for a comprehensive user-centered app design. The empirical insights gained from this study contribute to future research, informing the development and design of ethically considerate persuasive mHealth apps to maintain their relevance in promoting positive user experiences and facilitating meaningful behavior change. We obtain a quantitative star formation history (SFH) of a shell-like structure ('shell') located in the northeastern part of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). We use the Survey of the MAgellanic Stellar History to derive colour–magnitude diagrams (CMDs), reaching below the oldest main-sequence turnoff, from which we compute the SFHs with CMD-fitting techniques. We present, for the first time, a novel technique that uses red clump (RC) stars from the CMDs to assess and account for the SMC's line-of-sight depth effect present during the SFH derivation. We find that accounting for this effect recovers a more accurate SFH. We quantify an |$\sim$| 7 kpc line-of-sight depth present in the CMDs, in good agreement with depth estimates from RC stars in the northeastern SMC. By isolating the stellar content of the northeastern shell and incorporating the line-of-sight depth into our calculations, we obtain an unprecedentedly detailed SFH. We find that the northeastern shell is primarily composed of stars younger than |$\sim$| 500 Myr, with significant star formation enhancements around |$\sim$| 250 and |$\sim$| 450 Myr. These young stars are the main contributors to the shell's structure. We show synchronicity between the northeastern shell's SFH with the Large Magellanic Cloud's (LMC) northern arm, which we attribute to the interaction history of the SMC with the LMC and the Milky Way (MW) over the past |$\sim$| 500 Myr. Our results highlight the complex interplay of ram pressure stripping and the influence of the MW's circumgalactic medium in shaping the SMC's northeastern shell. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The physical properties of star cluster populations offer valuable insights into their birth, evolution, and disruption. However, individual stars in clusters beyond the nearest neighbours of the Milky Way are unresolved, forcing analyses of star cluster demographics to rely on integrated light, a process fraught with uncertainty. Here, we infer the demographics of the cluster population in the benchmark galaxy NGC 628 using data from the Legacy Extra-galactic UV Survey (LEGUS) coupled to a novel Bayesian forward-modelling technique. Our method analyses all 1178 clusters in the LEGUS catalogue, |$\sim 4$| times more than prior studies severely affected by completeness cuts. Our results indicate that the cluster mass function is either significantly steeper than the commonly observed slope of |$-2$| or is truncated at |$\approx 10^{4.5}$| M |$_\odot$|⁠ ; the latter possibility is consistent with proposed relations between truncation mass and star formation surface density. We find that cluster disruption is relatively mild for the first |$\approx 200$|   Myr of cluster evolution; no evidence for mass-dependent disruption is found. We find suggestive but not incontrovertible evidence that inner galaxy clusters may be more prone to disruption and outer galaxy clusters have a more truncated mass function, but confirming or refuting these findings will require larger samples from future observations of outer galaxy clusters. Finally, we find that current stellar track and atmosphere models, along with common forms for cluster mass and age distributions, cannot fully capture all features in the multidimensional photometric distribution of star clusters. Overdensities in the radial phase space |$(r,v_{\rm r})$| of the Milky Way's halo have previously been associated with the phase-mixed debris of a highly radial merger event such as Gaia Sausage–Enceladus. We present and test an alternative theory in which the overdense 'chevrons' are instead composed of stars trapped in resonances with the Galactic bar. We develop an analytic model of resonant orbits in the isochrone potential, and complement this with a test particle simulation of a stellar halo in a realistic barred Milky Way potential. These models are used to predict the appearance of action space |$(J_\phi ,J_{\rm r})$| and radial phase space in the Solar neighbourhood. They are able to reproduce almost all salient features of the observed chevrons. In particular, both the analytic model and simulation predict that the chevrons are more prominent at |$v_{\rm r}\ \lt\ 0$| when viewed near the Sun, as is observed by Gaia. This is inconsistent with formation by an ancient merger event. We also associate individual chevrons with specific resonances. At a bar pattern speed of |$\Omega _\mathrm{b}=35$| km s |$^{-1}$|  kpc |$^{-1}$|⁠ , the two most prominent prograde chevrons align very closely with the corotation and outer Lindblad resonances. The former can be viewed as a highly eccentric extension of the Hercules stream. Finally, our model predicts that the |$v_{\rm r}$| asymmetry changes sign as a function of Galactic radius and azimuth, and we find evidence that this is indeed the case in the Milky Way. The prevalence of light element enhancement in the most metal-poor stars is potentially an indication that the Milky Way has a metallicity floor for star formation around |$\sim 10^{-3.5}$| Z |$_{\odot }$|⁠. We propose that this metallicity floor has its origins in metal-enriched star formation in the minihaloes present during the Galaxy's initial formation. To arrive at this conclusion, we analyse a cosmological radiation hydrodynamics simulation that follows the concurrent evolution of multiple Population III star-forming minihaloes. The main driver for the central gas within minihaloes is the steady increase in hydrostatic pressure as the haloes grow. We incorporate this insight into a hybrid one-zone model that switches between pressure-confined and modified free-fall modes to evolve the gas density with time according to the ratio of the free-fall and sound-crossing time-scales. This model is able to accurately reproduce the density and chemo-thermal evolution of the gas in each of the simulated minihaloes up to the point of runaway collapse. We then use this model to investigate how the gas responds to the absence of H |$_{2}$|⁠. Without metals, the central gas becomes increasingly stable against collapse as it grows to the atomic cooling limit. When metals are present in the halo at a level of |$\sim 10^{-3.7}$|  Z |$_{\odot }$|⁠ , however, the gas is able to achieve gravitational instability while still in the minihalo regime. Thus, we conclude that the Galaxy's metallicity floor is set by the balance within minihaloes of gas-phase metal cooling and the radiation background associated with its early formation environment. We provide new constraints on the dark matter halo density profile of Milky Way (MW) dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) using the phase-space distribution function (DF) method. After assessing the systematics of the approach against mock data from the Gaia Challenge project, we apply the DF analysis to the entire kinematic sample of well-measured MW dwarf satellites for the first time. Contrary to previous findings for some of these objects, we find that the DF analysis yields results consistent with the standard Jeans analysis. In particular, in this study we rediscover (i) a large diversity in the inner halo densities of dSphs (bracketed by Draco and Fornax), and (ii) an anticorrelation between inner halo density and pericenter distance of the bright MW satellites. Regardless of the strength of the anticorrelation, we find that the distribution of these satellites in density versus pericenter space is inconsistent with the results of the high-resolution N -body simulations that include a disc potential. We present results from simultaneous modelling of 2D (projected along the line of sight) position, proper motion, and line-of-sight velocity for Gaia - and Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE)-observed stars near the centre of the Sagittarius (Sgr) dwarf spheroidal galaxy. We use a mixture model that allows for independent sub-populations contributed by the Sgr galaxy, its nuclear star cluster Messier 54 (M54), and the Milky Way foreground. We find an offset of |$0.295\pm 0.029$| deg between the inferred centroids of Sgr and M54, corresponding to a (projected) physical separation of |$0.135\pm 0.013$| kpc. The detected offset might plausibly be driven by unmodelled asymmetry in Sgr's stellar configuration; however, standard criteria for model selection favour our symmetric model over an alternative that allows for bilateral asymmetry. We infer an offset between the proper motion centres of Sgr and M54 of |$[\Delta \mu _{\alpha }\cos \delta ,\Delta \mu _{\delta }]=[4.9, -19.7] \pm [6.8, 6.2] \ \mu \mathrm{ as}\,\mathrm{ yr}^{-1}$| (⁠|$[0.61, -2.46] \pm [0.85, 0.77] \ \mathrm{ km}\,\mathrm{ s}^{-1}$|⁠), with magnitude similar to the covariance expected due to spatially correlated systematic error. We infer an offset of |$4.1\pm 1.2 \ \mathrm{ km}\,\mathrm{ s}^{-1}$| in line-of-sight velocity. Using inferred values for the systemic positions and motions of Sgr and M54 as initial conditions, we calculate the recent orbital history of a simplified Sgr/M54 system, which we demonstrate to be sensitive to any line-of-sight distance offset between M54 and Sgr, and to the distribution of dark matter within Sgr. A systematic comparison of the models of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) and their observables is crucial to understanding the predictive power of the models and constraining physical processes that affect the thermodynamics of CGM. This paper compares four analytic CGM models: precipitation, isentropic, cooling flow, and baryon pasting models for the hot, volume-filling CGM phase, all assuming hydrostatic or quasi-hydrostatic equilibrium. We show that for fiducial parameters of the CGM of a Milky Way (MW)-like galaxy (⁠|$M_{\rm vir} \sim 10^{12}~{\rm M}_{\odot }$| at |$z\sim 0$|⁠), the thermodynamic profiles – entropy, density, temperature, and pressure – show most significant differences between different models at small (⁠|$r\lesssim 30$|  kpc) and large scales (⁠|$r\gtrsim 100$|  kpc) while converging at intermediate scales. The slope of the entropy profile, which is one of the most important differentiators between models, is |$\approx 0.8$| for the precipitation and cooling flow models, while it is |$\approx 0.6$| and 0 for the baryon pasting and isentropic models, respectively. We make predictions for various observational quantities for an MW mass halo for the different models, including the projected Sunyaev–Zeldovich effect, soft X-ray emission (0.5–2 keV), dispersion measure, and column densities of oxygen ions (O  vi , O  vii , and O  viii) observable in absorption. We present long-slit spectroscopic observations of 40 Galaxy On Top of Quasars (GOTOQs) at |${0.37 \leqslant z \leqslant 1.01}$| using the South African Large Telescope. Using this and available photometric data, we measure the impact parameters of the foreground galaxies to be in the range of 3–16 kpc with a median value of 8.6 kpc. This is the largest sample of galaxies producing Mg  ii absorption at such low impact parameters. These quasar–galaxy pairs are ideal for probing the disc–halo interface. At such impact parameters, we do not find any anticorrelation between rest equivalent width (REW) of Ca  ii , Mn  ii , Fe  ii , Mg  ii , and Mg  i absorption and impact parameter. These sight lines are typically redder than those of strong Mg  ii absorbers, with the colour excess, E (B − V) for our sample ranging from −0.191 to 0.422, with a median value of 0.058. In the E (B − V) versus W 3935 plane, GOTOQs occupy the same region as Ca  ii absorbers. For a given E (B − V), we find larger W 3935 than what has been found in the Milky Way, probably due to a smaller dust-to-gas ratio in GOTOQs. Galaxy parameters could be measured for twelve cases, and their properties seem to follow the trends found for strong Mg  ii absorbers. Measuring the host galaxy properties for the full sample using HST photometry or AO-assisted ground-based imaging is important to gain insights into the relationship between the stellar mass of galaxies and the metal line REW distributions at low impact parameters. Three-dimensional dust density maps are crucial for understanding the structure of the interstellar medium of the Milky Way and the processes that shape it. However, constructing these maps requires large data sets and the methods used to analyse them are computationally expensive and difficult to scale up. As a result, it has only recently become possible to map kiloparsec-scale regions of our Galaxy at parsec-scale grid sampling. We present all-sky three-dimensional dust density and extinction maps of the Milky Way out to 2.8 kpc in distance from the Sun using the fast and scalable Gaussian Process algorithm Dustribution. The sampling of the three-dimensional map is l, b, d  = 1° × 1° × 1.7 pc. The input extinction and distance catalogue contains 120 million stars with photometry and astrometry from Gaia DR2, 2MASS and AllWISE. This combines the strengths of optical and infrared data to probe deeper into the dusty regions of the Milky Way. We compare our maps with other published 3D dust maps. All maps quantitatively agree at the 0.001 mag pc−1 scale with many qualitatively similar features, although each map also has its own features. We recover Galactic features previously identified in the literature. Moreover, we also see a large under-density that may correspond to an inter-arm or -spur gap towards the Galactic Centre. Gaia wide stellar binaries (separations |$\sim 10^3{\!-\!}10^{4.5}$| au) are observed to have a superthermal eccentricity distribution function (DF), well-fit by |$P(e) \propto e^\alpha$| with |$\alpha \sim 1.2$|⁠. In a previous paper, we proved that this DF cannot have been produced by Galactic tidal torques starting from any realistic DF that was not already superthermal. Here, we consider the other major dynamical effect on wide binaries: encounters with passing stars. We derive and solve the Fokker–Planck equation governing the evolution of binaries in semimajor axis and eccentricity under many weak, impulsive, penetrative stellar encounters. We show analytically that these encounters drive the eccentricity DF towards thermal on the same time-scale as they drive the semimajor axes a towards disruption, |$t_\mathrm{dis}\sim 4\, \mathrm{Gyr}\, (a/10^4\, \mathrm{AU})^{-1}$|⁠. We conclude that the observed superthermal DF must derive from an even more superthermal (i.e. higher |$\alpha$|⁠) birth distribution. This requirement places strong constraints on the dominant binary formation channels. Based on a sample of K giant from Large sky Area Multi-Object fibre Spectroscopic Telescope Data Release 8 and a sample of RR Lyrae (RRL) from Gaia Data Release 3, we investigate the compositions of the Hercules–Aquila Cloud (HAC) and Virgo Overdensity (VOD) and their collective contribution to the tilt and triaxiality of the stellar halo (⁠|$r\, \lt \, 40\, {\rm kpc}$|⁠) as well as two breaks at |$\approx 15\, {\rm kpc}$| and 30 kpc. We apply the Gaussian mixture model to divide the stellar halo into the isotropic component and the radially biased anisotropic component, namely Gaia–Sausage–Enceladus (GSE), and find that both HAC and VOD are dominated by the GSE debris stars with weights of |$0.67^{+0.09}_{-0.07}$| and |$0.57^{+0.07}_{-0.06}$|⁠ , respectively. In addition, using the K giants with orbital parameters, we identify the member stars of known substructures, including GSE, Sagittarius (Sgr), Helmi Streams, Sequoia, Thamnos, Pontus, Wukong, and Metal-weak Thick Disc, to probe the compositions of low-eccentricity stars in the HAC and VOD regions. In density fittings of the RRL sample, we note that the absence of HAC and VOD has a weak effect on the shape of halo. Finally, we find that the radially biased anisotropic halo contributes majorly to the stellar halo that can be modelled with a tilted triaxial ellipsoid and a doubly broken power law with breaking radii at |$18.08^{+2.04}_{-3.22}\, {\rm kpc}$| and |$33.03^{+1.30}_{-1.21}\, {\rm kpc}$|⁠. In the absence of supplementary heat, the radiative cooling of halo gas around massive galaxies (Milky Way mass and above) leads to an excess of cold gas or stars beyond observed levels. Active galactic nucleus jet-induced heating is likely essential, but the specific properties of the jets remain unclear. Our previous work concludes from simulations of a halo with |$10^{14} \,\mathrm{ M}_\odot$| that a successful jet model should have an energy flux comparable to the free-fall energy flux at the cooling radius and should inflate a sufficiently wide cocoon with a long enough cooling time. In this paper, we investigate three jet modes with constant fluxes satisfying the criteria, including high-temperature thermal jets, cosmic ray (CR)-dominant jets, and widely precessing kinetic jets in |$10^{12}-10^{15}\, {\rm M}_{\odot }$| haloes using high-resolution, non-cosmological magnetohydrodynamic simulations with the FIRE-2 (Feedback In Realistic Environments) stellar feedback model, conduction, and viscosity. We find that scaling the jet energy according to the free-fall energy at the cooling radius can successfully suppress the cooling flows and quench galaxies without violating observational constraints. On the contrary, if we scale the energy flux based on the total cooling rate within the cooling radius, strong interstellar medium cooling dominates this scaling, resulting in a jet flux exceeding what is needed. Among the three jet types, the CR-dominant jet is most effective in suppressing cooling flows across all surveyed halo masses due to enhanced CR pressure support. Stars form in the densest regions of molecular clouds; however, there is no universal understanding of the factors that regulate cloud dynamics and their influence on the gas-to-star conversion. This study considers the impact of Galactic shear on the rotation of giant molecular clouds (GMCs) and its relation to the solenoidal modes of turbulence. We estimate the direction of rotation for a large sample of clouds in the |$\mathrm{^{13}CO}$| / |$\mathrm{C^{18}O}$| (3–2) Heterodyne Inner Milky Way Plane Survey (CHIMPS) and their corresponding sources in a new segmentation of the |$\mathrm{^{12}CO}$| (3–2) High-Resolution Survey. To quantify the strength of shear, we introduce a parameter that describes the shear's ability to disrupt growing density perturbations within the cloud. Although we find no correlation between the direction of cloud rotation, the shear parameter, and the magnitude of the velocity gradient, the solenoidal fraction of the turbulence in the CHIMPS sample is positively correlated with the shear parameter and behaves similarly when plotted over Galactocentric distance. GMCs may thus not be large or long-lived enough to be affected by shear to the point of showing rotational alignment. In theory, Galactic shear can facilitate the rise of solenoidal turbulence and thus contribute to suppressing star formation. These results also suggest that the rotation of clouds is not strictly related to the overall rotation of the disc, but is more likely to be the imprint of Kelvin–Helmholtz instabilities in the colliding flows that formed the clouds. The mass distribution in the Local Group (LG), dominated by the Andromeda (M31) and Milky Way (MW) pair, is highly anisotropic. We use the APOSTLE simulations to examine how this anisotropy manifests on the spatial distribution and kinematics of dwarf galaxies out to a distance of |$d_{\rm MW}\sim 3$|  Mpc from the MW. The simulations indicate a preference for dwarfs to be located near the axis defined by the MW-M31 direction, even for dwarfs in the LG periphery (LGP; i.e. at distances |$1.25\ \lt\ d_{\rm MW}/$| Mpc |$\lt\ 3$|⁠). The 'Hubble flow' in the periphery is also affected; at fixed |$d_{\rm MW}$| the mean recession speed, |$\langle V_{\rm rad} \rangle$|⁠ , varies with angular distance to M31, peaking in the anti-M31 direction and reaching a minimum behind M31. The M31-MW mass decelerates the local expansion; the LG 'turnaround radius' (i.e. where |$\langle V_{\rm rad} \rangle =0$|⁠) in APOSTLE is at |$r \sim 1.25$|  Mpc from the LG barycentre and the pure Hubble flow (where |$\langle V_{\rm rad} \rangle \sim H_0*d$|⁠) is reached beyond |$r\sim 3$|  Mpc. The predicted flow is very cold, with a barycentric dispersion of |$\lt 40$|  km s−1. Comparing these predictions with observations yields mixed results. There is little evidence for a preferred alignment of dwarfs along the MW-M31 direction, but some evidence for an angular anisotropy in |$\langle V_{\rm rad} \rangle$|⁠. Although the 'coldness' of the Hubble flow is consistent with the simulations, it is less decelerated: relative to the MW all galaxies beyond |$d_{\rm MW} \sim 1.25$|  Mpc seem to be already on a pure Hubble flow. We argue that these oddities may result at least partly from incompleteness and inhomogeneous sky coverage in our current inventory of nearby dwarfs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We investigate the non-adiabatic effect of time-dependent deformations in the Milky Way (MW) halo potential on stellar streams. Specifically, we consider the MW's response to the infall of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and how this impacts our ability to recover the spherically averaged MW mass profile from observation using stream actions. Previously, action clustering methods have only been applied to static or adiabatic MW systems to constrain the properties of the host system. We use a time-evolving MW–LMC simulation described by basis function expansions. We find that for streams with realistic observational uncertainties on shorter orbital periods and without close encounters with the LMC, e.g. GD-1, the radial action distribution is sufficiently clustered to locally recover the spherical MW mass profile across the stream radial range within a |$2\sigma$| confidence interval determined using a Fisher information approach. For streams with longer orbital periods and close encounters with the LMC, e.g. Orphan–Chenab (OC), the radial action distribution disperses as the MW halo has deformed non-adiabatically. Hence, for OC streams generated in potentials that include an MW halo with any deformations, action clustering methods will fail to recover the spherical mass profile within a |$2\sigma$| uncertainty. Finally, we investigate whether the clustering of stream energies can provide similar constraints. Surprisingly, we find for OC-like streams, the recovered spherically averaged mass profiles demonstrate less sensitivity to the time-dependent deformations in the potential. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We study the statistics of dwarf galaxy populations as a function of environment in cold dark matter (CDM) and warm dark matter (WDM; sterile neutrino model mass |$M_{{\rm s}}=7.1~{\rm keV}$|⁠ ; half-mode mass |$M_{{\rm hm}} = 6.3\times 10^8$|   |${\rm M}_\odot$|⁠ ; and thermal relic equivalent mass |$m_{{\rm th}} = 2.8~{\rm keV}$|⁠) cosmogonies, using the Evolution and Assembly of GaLaxies and their Environments (EAGLE) galaxy formation model in two counterpart simulations. We measure the abundance of dwarf galaxies within 3 Mpc of DM haloes with a present-day halo mass similar to the Milky Way, finding that the number of galaxies |$M_{*}\gt 10^7$|   |${\rm M}_\odot$|  is nearly identical for WDM and CDM. However, the cumulative mass function becomes shallower for WDM at lower masses, yielding 50 per cent fewer dwarf galaxies of |$M_{*}\gtrsim 10^{5}$|   |${\rm M}_\odot$|  than CDM. The suppression of low-mass halo counts in WDM increases significantly from high- to low-density regions for haloes in the |$[0.5,2] \times M_ {\rm hm}$| range. The fraction of haloes hosting resolvable galaxies (⁠|$M_*\gtrsim 10^{5}$|   |${\rm M}_\odot$|  ) also diverges from overdense to underdense regions for |$M\gt 2M_ {\rm hm}$|⁠ , as the increased collapse delay at small densities pushes the collapse to after the reionization threshold. However, the stellar mass of WDM haloes at |$[0.5,2]\times M_ {\rm hm}$| is 30 per cent higher per unit halo mass than CDM haloes in underdense regions. We conclude that the suppression of galaxies with |$M_{*}\gtrsim 10^5$|   |${\rm M}_\odot$|  between WDM and CDM is independent of density: the suppression of halo counts and fraction of luminous haloes is balanced by an enhancement in stellar mass–halo mass relation. Our ability to trace the star-forming molecular gas is important to our understanding of the Universe. We can trace this gas using CO emission, converting the observed CO intensity into the H |$_2$| gas mass of the region using the CO-to-H |$_2$| conversion factor (⁠|$X_{\rm{{\small CO}}}$|⁠). In this paper, we use simulations to study the conversion factor and the molecular gas within galaxies. We analysed a suite of simulations of isolated disc galaxies, ranging from dwarfs to Milky Way-mass galaxies, that were run using the fire-2 subgrid models coupled to the chimes non-equilibrium chemistry solver. We use the non-equilibrium abundances from the simulations, and we also compare to results using abundances assuming equilibrium, which we calculate from the simulation in post-processing. Our non-equilibrium simulations are able to reproduce the relation between CO and H |$_2$| column densities, and the relation between |$X_{\rm{{\small CO}}}$| and metallicity, seen within observations of the Milky Way. We also compare to the xCOLD GASS survey, and find agreement with their data to our predicted CO luminosities at fixed star formation rate. We also find the multivariate function used by xCOLD GASS overpredicts the H |$_2$| mass for our simulations, motivating us to suggest an alternative multivariate function of our fitting, though we caution that this fitting is uncertain due to the limited range of galaxy conditions covered by our simulations. We also find that the non-equilibrium chemistry has little effect on the conversion factor (<5 per cent) for our high-mass galaxies, though still affects the H |$_2$| mass and |$L_{\rm{{\small CO}}}$| by |$\approx$| 25  per cent. In this review, we highlight the contributions made by the Swift/UVOT instrument to the understanding of the ultraviolet (UV) attenuation and extinction properties of interstellar dust and provide insight into hot stars and young stellar populations. The study of these two fields is interconnected: UV-bright objects can only be understood if the effects of foreground dust are accounted for, but foreground dust can only be accounted for by studying the properties of UV-bright objects. Decades worth of work have established that the effects of dust on background starlight vary in the ultraviolet, with proposed extinction laws having a wide variety of slopes and a strong "bump" spectroscopic feature at 2175 Å. We show that UVOT is uniquely suited to probe variations in the UV extinction law, specifically because of the u v m 2 filter that is centered on the bump and the telescope's ability to resolve nearby stellar populations. When used in combination with optical and infrared imaging, UVOT can provide strong constraints on variations in the extinction law, both from galaxy to galaxy and within individual galaxies, as well as the properties of young stellar populations. Surveys of UVOT have included the Milky Way, the galaxies of the Local Group, the Local Volume Legacy Survey (LVLS) and two deep fields. All of these are being utilized to provide the most detailed information yet about the UV dust attenuation law and the connection of its variation to underlying physical processes as well as the UV properties of hot stars and young stellar populations. While today the term 'galaxy' is a household word primarily associated with the huge congregations of stars far outside the Milky Way, until about 1950 these structures were generally known as 'nebulae'. Although the singular form 'galaxy' was commonly used, it was typically considered as just another word for the Milky Way. Edwin Hubble's celebrated discovery in the 1920s of the extragalactic nature of the spirals was for a long time referred to as the discovery of 'extragalactic nebulae', whereas the plural term 'galaxies' was only employed by a minority of astronomers. In fact, it took until about 1960 before our current usage became commonly accepted and the spiral nebulae became spiral galaxies. We present the final results of our search for new Milky Way (MW) satellites using the data from the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Subaru Strategic Program (SSP) survey over ∼1140 deg2. In addition to three candidates that we have already reported, we have identified two new MW satellite candidates in the constellations of Sextans, at a heliocentric distance of D ⊙ ≃ 126 kpc, and Virgo, at D ⊙ ≃ 151 kpc, named Sextans II and Virgo III, respectively. Their luminosities (Sext II: MV ≃ −3.9 mag; Vir III: MV ≃ −2.7 mag) and half-light radii (Sext II: r h ≃ 154 pc; Vir III: r h ≃ 44 pc) place them in the region of size–luminosity space of ultra-faint dwarf galaxies (UFDs). Including four previously known satellites, there are a total of nine satellites in the HSC-SSP footprint. This discovery rate of UFDs is much higher than that predicted from the recent models for the expected population of MW satellites in the framework of cold dark matter models, thereby suggesting that we encounter a too many satellites problem. We performed correlation analyses between the 12CO and 13CO J = 1–0 line intensities in order to derive the variability of the CO-to-H2 conversion factor (X CO,iso) in the central molecular zone (CMZ) of our Galaxy. New high-resolution X CO,iso maps at a resolution of ∼30″ and a longitude–velocity diagram (LVD) at resolution |${\sim }{30^{\prime\prime}}\times 2$| km s−1 are presented using the 12CO and 13CO archival survey data obtained by the Nobeyama 45 m telescope. We revealed the variation of X CO,iso in the CMZ within the range of X CO,iso ∼ (0.2–1.3) × 1020 cm−2 (K km s−1)−1, if we assume a normalization value of 0.59 × 1020 cm−2 (K km s−1)−1. The mean value is obtained as X CO,iso = (0.48 ± 0.15) × 1020 cm−2 (K km s−1)−1 in the CMZ of our Galaxy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present results from a systematic infrared (IR) census of R Coronae Borealis (RCB) stars in the Milky Way, using data from the Palomar Gattini IR (PGIR) survey. RCB stars are dusty, erratic variable stars presumably formed from the merger of a He-core and a CO-core white dwarf (WD). PGIR is a 30 cm J -band telescope with a 25 deg2 camera that surveys 18,000 deg2 of the northern sky (δ > −28°) at a cadence of 2 days. Using PGIR J- band lightcurves for ∼60 million stars together with mid-IR colors from WISE, we selected a sample of 530 candidate RCB stars. We obtained near-IR spectra for these candidates and identified 53 RCB stars in our sample. Accounting for our selection criteria, we find that there are a total of ≈ 350 − 100 + 150 RCB stars in the Milky Way. Assuming typical RCB lifetimes, this corresponds to an RCB formation rate of 0.8–5 × 10−3 yr−1, consistent with observational and theoretical estimates of the He-CO WD merger rate. We searched for quasi-periodic pulsations in the PGIR lightcurves of RCB stars and present pulsation periods for 16 RCB stars. We also examined high-cadenced TESS lightcurves for RCB and the chemically similar, but dustless hydrogen-deficient carbon (dLHdC) stars. We find that dLHdC stars show variations on timescales shorter than RCB stars, suggesting that they may have lower masses than RCB stars. Finally, we identified 3 new spectroscopically confirmed and 12 candidate Galactic DY Per type stars—believed to be colder cousins of RCB star—doubling the sample of Galactic DY Per type stars. The chemical abundances of Milky Way's (MW's) satellites reflect their star formation histories (SFHs), yet, due to the difficulty of determining the ages of old stars, the SFHs of most satellites are poorly measured. Ongoing and upcoming surveys will obtain around 10 times more medium-resolution spectra for stars in satellites than are currently available. To correctly extract SFHs from large samples of chemical abundances, the relationship between chemical abundances and SFHs needs to be clarified. Here, we perform a high-resolution cosmological zoom-in simulation of a MW-like galaxy with detailed models of star formation, supernova (SN) feedback, and metal diffusion. We quantify SFHs, metallicity distribution functions, and the α -element (Mg, Ca, and Si) abundances in satellites of the host galaxy. We find that star formation in most simulated satellites is quenched before infalling to their host. Star formation episodes in simulated satellites are separated by a few hundred Myr owing to SN feedback; each star formation event produces groups of stars with similar [ α /Fe] and [Fe/H]. We then perform a mock observation of the upcoming Subaru Prime Focus Spectrograph (PFS) observations. We find that Subaru PFS will be able to detect distinct groups of stars in [ α /Fe] versus [Fe/H] space, produced by episodic star formation. This result means that episodic SFHs can be estimated from the chemical abundances of ≳1000 stars determined with medium-resolution spectroscopy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are extraordinary astrophysical phenomena characterized by short radio pulses that last only a few milliseconds, yet their power can surpass that of 500 million suns. To date, most detected FRBs originate from beyond our galaxy. However, if an FRB were to originate within the Milky Way, it could be detected using small antennas. In this paper, we propose a compact and ad-hoc antenna array designed for the efficient detection and localization of FRBs within the Milky Way. The antenna operates within the 1200–1800MHz range and consists of three sub-arrays placed in an L-shape for source localization, occupying a total volume of 80×25×6cm3. Each sub-array consists of 4 miniaturized, dual-polarized, half-space radiation antenna elements, forming a one-dimensional array that allows shaping the radiation pattern to match the form of the Milky Way without exhibiting grating lobes. A prototype was constructed and characterized to validate the design. The measured results exhibit good agreement with the simulations. In addition to having a custom elongated radiation pattern, the array has attractive merits, such as low reflections at the input ports, high radiation efficiency, and a distribution that inhibits the existence of phase ambiguities, thus facilitating source localization. Exploring the marks left by galactic accretion in the Milky Way helps us understand how our Galaxy was formed. However, finding and studying accreted stars and the galaxies they came from has been challenging. This study uses a simulation from the Numerical Investigation of a Hundred Astronomical Objects project, which now includes a wider range of chemical compositions, to find better ways to spot these accreted stars. By comparing our findings with data from the GALAH spectroscopic survey, we confirm that the observationally established diagnostics of [Al/Fe] versus [Mg/Mn] also show a separation of in situ and accreted stars in the simulation, but stars from different accretion events tend to overlap in this plane even without observational uncertainties. Looking at the relationship between stellar age and linear or logarithmic abundances, such as [Fe/H], we can clearly separate different groups of these stars if the uncertainties in their chemical makeup are less than 0.15 dex and less than 20 per cent for their ages. This method shows promise for studying the history of the Milky Way and other galaxies. Our work highlights how important it is to have accurate measurements of stellar ages and chemical content. It also shows how simulations can help us understand the complex process of galaxies merging and suggest how these events might relate to the differences we see between our Galaxy's thin and thick disc stars. To advance our understanding of the evolution of the interstellar medium (ISM) of our Galaxy, numerical models of Milky Way (MW) type galaxies are widely used. However, most models only vaguely resemble the MW (e.g. in total mass), and often use imposed analytic potentials (which cannot evolve dynamically). This poses a problem in asserting their applicability for the interpretation of observations of our own Galaxy. The goal of this work is to identify a numerical model that is not only an MW-type galaxy, but one that can mimic some of the main observed structures of our Galaxy, using dynamically evolving potentials, so that it can be used as a base model to study the ISM cycle in a galaxy like our own. This paper introduces a suite of 15 MW-type galaxy models developed using the arepo numerical code, that are compared to Galactic observations of |$^{12}$| CO and H  i emission via longitude–velocity plots, from where we extract and compare the skeletons of major galactic features and the terminal gas velocities. We found that our best-fitting model to the overall structure, also reproduces some of the more specific observed features of the MW, including a bar with a pattern speed of |$30.0 \pm 0.2$| km s |$^{-1}$|  kpc |$^{-1}$|⁠ , and a bar half-length of |$3.2 \pm 0.8$|  kpc. Our model shows large streaming motions around spiral arms, and strong radial motions well beyond the inner bar. This model highlights the complex motions of a dynamic MW-type galaxy and has the potential to offer valuable insight into how our Galaxy regulates the ISM and star formation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In recent years, the study of the Milky Way has significantly advanced due to extensive spectroscopic surveys of its stars, complemented by astroseismic and astrometric data. However, it remains disjoint from recent advancements in understanding the physics of the Galactic interstellar medium (ISM). This paper introduces a new model for the chemical evolution of the Milky Way that can be constrained on stellar data, because it combines a state-of-the-art ISM model with a Milky Way stellar disc model. Utilizing a data set of red clump stars from APOGEE, known for their precise ages and metallicities, we concentrate on the last 6 billion years – a period marked by Milky Way's secular evolution. We examine the oxygen abundance in the low- |$\alpha$| disc stars relative to their ages and birth radii, validating or constraining critical ISM parameters that remain largely unexplored in extragalactic observations. The models that successfully reproduce the radius–metallicity distribution and the age–metallicity distribution of stars without violating existing ISM observations indicate a need for modest differential oxygen enrichment in Galactic outflows, meaning that the oxygen abundance of outflows is higher than the local ISM abundance, irrespective of outflow mass loading. The models also suggest somewhat elevated ISM gas velocity dispersion levels over the past 6 billion years compared to galaxies of similar mass. The extra turbulence necessary could result from energy from gas accretion onto the Galaxy, supernovae clustering in the ISM, or increased star formation efficiency per freefall time. Recent advancements in 3D dust mapping have transformed our understanding of the Milky Way's local interstellar medium, enabling us to explore its structure in three spatial dimensions for the first time. In this Letter, we use the most recent 3D dust map by Edenhofer et al. to study the well-known Chameleon, Musca, and Coalsack cloud complexes, located about 200 pc from the Sun. We find that these three complexes are not isolated but rather connect to form a surprisingly well-defined half-ring, constituting a single C-shaped cloud with a radius of about 50 pc, a thickness of about 45 pc, and a total mass of about 5 × 104M⊙, or 9 × 104M⊙ if including everything in the vicinity of the C-shaped cloud. Despite the absence of an evident feedback source at its center, the dynamics of young stellar clusters associated with the C structure suggest that a single supernova explosion about 4 Myr–10 Myr ago likely shaped this structure. Our findings support a single origin story for these cloud complexes, suggesting that they were formed by feedback-driven gas compression, and offer new insights into the processes that govern the birth of star-forming clouds in feedback-dominated regions, such as the Scorpius-Centaurus association. Context. Various stellar objects experience a velocity kick at some point in their evolution. These include neutron stars and black holes at their birth, or binary systems when one of the two components goes supernova. For most of these objects, the magnitude of the kick and its impact on the object dynamics remains a topic of debate. Aims. We investigate how kicks alter the velocity distribution of objects born in the Milky Way disc, both immediately after the kick and at later times, and whether these kicks are encoded in the observed population of Galactic neutron stars. Methods. We simulated the Galactic trajectories of point masses on circular orbits in the disc after being perturbed by an isotropic kick, with a Maxwellian distribution where σ = 265 km s−1. Then, we simulated the motion of these point masses for 200 Myr. These trajectories were then evaluated, either for the Milky Way population as a whole or for those passing within two kiloparsecs of the Sun, to get the time evolution of the velocities. Results. During the first 20 Myr, the bulk velocity of kicked objects becomes temporarily aligned with the cylindrical radius, implying an anisotropy in the velocity orientations. Beyond this age, the velocity distribution shifts towards lower values and settles to a median of ∼200 km s−1. Around the Sun, the distribution also loses its upper tail, primarily due to unbound objects escaping the Galaxy. We compared this to the velocities of Galactic pulsars and find that pulsars show a similar evolution with characteristic age. Conclusions. The shift in the velocity distribution is due to bound objects spending most of their orbits at larger radii after the kick. They are, therefore, decelerated by the Galactic potential. We find the same deceleration for nearby objects and the total population, and conclude that it is also observed in Galactic pulsars. Because of this effect, the (scalar) speeds of old neutron stars provide little information about their kicks at birth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. Within Λ cold dark matter (ΛCDM) simulations, Milky Way-like galaxies accrete some of their satellite galaxies in groups of 3–5 members rather than individually, and this has been suggested as a possible mechanism driving the formation of satellite planes. Objects accreted in groups are expected to share similar specific total energy and angular momentum, and to also have identical orbital planes and directions. Aims. Looking at observatio ns of Milky Way satellites, the dwarf galaxies Leo II, IV, V, and Crater II, and the star cluster Crater 1 were proposed to be a vestige of group infall. The suggested 'Crater-Leo group' shows a coherent distance gradient and all these objects align along a great circle on the sky. We used proper motion data to investigate whether the phase-space distribution of the members of the proposed group are indeed consistent with group infall. Methods. To further investigate this possibility, we used Gaia Data Release 3 (DR3) and new Hubble Space Telescope (HST) proper motions – namely, (μα*, μδ) = (−0.1921 ± 0.0514, −0.0686 ± 0.0523) mas yr−1 for Leo IV and (μα*, μδ) = (0.1186 ± 0.1943, −0.1183 ± 0.1704) mas yr−1 for Leo V – to derive accurate orbital properties for the proposed group objects. In addition, we explored other possible members of this putative association. Results. Leo II, Leo IV, and Crater 1 show orbital properties consistent with those we predict from assuming group infall. However, our results suggest that Crater II was not accreted with the rest of the objects. If confirmed with increasingly accurate proper motions in the future, the Crater-Leo objects would appear to constitute the first identified case of a cosmologically expected, typical group infall event, as opposed to the highly hierarchical Magellanic Cloud system. The Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal (Sgr dSph) galaxy provides one of the most convincing examples of tidal interaction between satellite galaxies and the Milky Way (MW). The main body of the dwarf was recently demonstrated to have an elongated, prolate, bar-like shape and to possess some internal rotation. Whether these features are temporary results of the strong tidal interaction at the recent pericenter passage or are due to a disky progenitor is a matter of debate. I present an analog of Sgr selected among bar-like galaxies from the TNG50 simulation of the IllustrisTNG project. The simulated dwarf is initially a disky galaxy with mass exceeding 1011 M⊙ and evolves around a MW-like host on a tight orbit with seven pericenter passages and a period of about 1 Gyr. At the second pericenter passage, the disk transforms into a bar and the bar-like shape of the stellar component is preserved until the end of the evolution. The morphological transformation is accompanied by strong mass loss, leaving a dwarf with a final mass of below 109 M⊙. The gas is lost completely and the star formation ceases at the third pericenter passage. At the last pericenters, the dwarf possesses a bar-like shape, a little remnant rotation, and the metallicity gradient, which are consistent with observations. The more concentrated metal-rich stellar population rotates faster and has a lower velocity dispersion than the more extended metal-poor one. The metallicity distribution evolves so that the most metal-poor stars are stripped first, which explains the metallicity gradient detected in the Sgr stream. This study demonstrates that a dSph galaxy with properties akin to the Sgr dwarf can form from a disky progenitor with a mass of above 1011 M⊙ by tidal evolution around the MW in the cosmological context.
