Abstract

Whatever part of the World you come from, when you come to Rijeka you came to the heart of Europe. Rijeka is waiting for you with the scent of its sea and the hospitality of its people. Rijeka is a town of unusual, turbulent and intersected history. At the end of the IX Century the area of Rijeka was one of the most powerful industrial zones in Europe. Prof. Eugen Cerkovnikov, Ph. D., a much-respected chemist, first Head of the Department for Chemistry and Biochemistry on the then newly established Medical School in Rijeka, launched the initiative to form a branch-office of the Croatian Chemist Society in Rijeka. On 18 January, 1958 in the Big Classroom of the Medical School in Rijeka the Founding Assembly was held, and many respected scientists of that period were present.In 1960, the Rijeka branch-office of the Croatian Chemist Society merged with the Society of Chemists and Technologists and in 1973 the Biochemists section joined. In the five decades of its existence, the love towards chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, technology and chemical engineering, the love towards the basis of natural sciences and the wish to educate new, progressive generations formed the mission of the Society. The Society does not want to be closed in a guild organisation; its aim is to open its doors towards all those striving to progress.Former presidents of the Society were: Eugen Cerkovnikov (1958-1974), Marijan Kolombo (1974-1980), Josip Šilipeter (1980-1984), Marinko Oršia (1984-1996) i Nikola Bla?evia (1996-); and each one of them marked his era. Transitional circumstances have shut down forever many, until recently, extremely powerful industries in Rijeka. Today, Rijeka is searching for new paths, and we believe that our Society will continue to work on and give its contribution to this search.

Abstract

International audience; Rituximab plus polychemotherapy is the standard of care in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). GAINED, a randomized phase 3 trial, compared obinutuzumab to rituximab. Transplant-eligible patients (18-60 years) with an untreated age-adjusted International Prognostic Index (aaIPI) score ≥1 DLBCL were randomized (1:1) between obinutuzumab or rituximab and stratified by aaIPI (1; 2-3) and chemotherapy regimen (doxorubicin, cyclophosphamide, prednisone plus vindesine, bleomycin [ACVBP] or vincristine [CHOP]). Consolidation treatment was determined according to response to interim positron emission tomography (PET). Responders after cycle 2 and 4 (PET2-/PET4-) received immunochemotherapy. Responders after only cycle 4 (PET2+/4-) received transplantation. The primary objective was an 8% improvement (hazard ratio [HR] = 0.73; 80% power; α risk, 2.5%; 1-sided) in 2-year event-free survival (EFS) in the obinutuzumab arm. From September 2012, 670 patients were enrolled (obinutuzumab, n = 336; rituximab, n = 334). A total of 383 (57.2%) were aaIPI 2-3, 339 (50.6%) received CHOP. Median follow-up was 38.7 months. The 2-year EFS was similar in both groups (59.8% vs 56.6%; P = .123; HR = 0.88). The 2-year PFS in the whole cohort was 83.1% (95% confidence interval, 80% to 85.8%). PET2-/4- and PET2+/4- had similar 2-year progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS): 89.9% vs 83.9% and 94.8% vs 92.8%. The 2-year PFS and OS for PET4+ patients were 62% and 83.1%. Grade 3-5 infections were more frequent in the obinutuzumab arm (21% vs 12%). Obinutuzumab is not superior to rituximab in aaIPI ≥1 DLBCL transplant-eligible patients. Abstract

To investigate the effects of air pollution related with the gasoline/petrochemical industry the expression of metallothionein I (MT-I) mRNA and tissue metals were analyzed in organs of mice, exposed to gasoline (G) vapor in laboratory conditions. Control groups consisted of intact mice and of those exposed in the metabolic chamber to fresh air. The data obtained by RT-PCR and inductively coupled plasma spectrometry have shown that exposure to G vapor leads to upregulation of MT-I mRNA in organs that receive a strong respiratory and olfactory input or participate in gasoline degradation and elimination (lungs, brain, kidney and liver). 18-Fluoro-deoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computerised tomography (FDG PET/CT) is commonly used in the management of patients with lymphomas and is recommended for both initial staging and response assessment after treatment in patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma and Hodgkin lymphoma. Despite the FDG avidity of follicular lymphoma (FL), FDG PET/CT is not yet applied in standard clinical practice for patients with FL. However, FDG PET/CT is more accurate than conventional imaging for initial staging, often prompting significant management change, and allows noninvasive characterization to guide assessment of high-grade transformation. For restaging, FDG PET/CT assists in distinguishing between scar tissue and viable tumors in residual masses and a positive PET after induction treatment would seem to predict a shorter progression-free survival.
