Hajer og rokker (tilhører bruskfiskene) er fisk, der kan blive gamle, som kønsmodner i en sen alder og sædvanligvis føder få unger. Dette gør dem særligt sårbare over for fiskeri og andre menneskeskabte påvirkninger. Det er derfor vigtigt, at bruskfiskbestandene overvåges, og at de artsbestemmes korrekt ved landing for at sikre en bæredygtig udnyttelse. Guiden til hajer og rokker i danske og tilstødende farvande er udarbejdet for at hjælpe ansatte hos DTU Aqua, fiskere og andre brugere i felten med mere nøjagtig artsgenkendelse af bruskfisk. Tanken er, at guiden kan printes, lamineres og holdes samlet med f.eks. spiralryg eller nøgleringe i siden. Alt materialet i guiden er baseret på Fiskeatlas fra Københavns Universitet, data fra DTU Aquas sejlads og havneindsamlinger (Rindorf m.fl., 2023), videnskabelige undersøgelser fra Nord- og Vesteuropa (Datras, 2024), feltguides fra Ebert & Dando (2020), Ebert, Dando og Fowler (2021) og Last m.fl. (2016) samt hjemmesider og databaser, herunder sharktrust.org, iucnredlist.org og shark-references.com. Guiden inkluderer i alt 14 hajarter og 16 rokkearter fra danske og tilstødende farvande, hvoraf nogle er almindeligt forekommende og andre mere sjældne. I Fiskeatlas er der også dokumenteret fangster af marmoreret elrokke (Torpedo marmorata), europæisk pigrokke (Dasyatis pastinaca), sort elrokke (Tetronarce nobiliana), ørnerokke (Myliobatis aquila) og europæisk havengel (Squatina squatina) i Danmark, men disse er ikke inkluderet i denne guide, da de er så sjældne, at fangster er usandsynlige. Mesopelagic fish are considered a possible future fisheries resource, but the biological sustainability of their potential exploitation has not yet been assessed. Sustainability should be evaluated at the population level, for which accurate stock-specific life-history parameters are required. Here, we use a length-based model to estimate life-history parameters related to growth and natural mortality, and their uncertainty, for the assessment of Northeast Atlantic populations of Maurolicus muelleri (Gmelin, 1789, Mueller’s Pearlside) and Benthosema glaciale (Reinhardt, 1837, glacier lantern fish). We compare three different approaches to estimate natural mortality rates and provide recommendations for future data collection and monitoring programs. For M. muelleri, we estimated an asymptotic length of 57.98 mm and a von Bertalanffy growth constant of 1.28 year−1, while for B. glaciale, we estimated an asymptotic length of 78.93 mm and a von Bertalanffy growth constant of 0.41 year−1. Estimates of natural mortality rates for M. muelleri were around 1.29 year−1 and 1.80 year−1 based on empirical formulae with the estimated growth parameters and maximum age, respectively, and around 1.51 year−1 with the length-converted catch curve method for B. glaciale estimates ranged between 0.5, 0.68, and 0.75 year−1, with the three respective methods. Due to limited data availability, the estimated uncertainty of the provided life-history parameters is large and should be considered in the evaluation of the sustainability of potential mesopelagic exploitation following the precautionary approach.

The assessment of the status of fisheries resources is pivotal due to the importance of marine resources in global food security and to halt the ongoing decline in marine biodiversity. Norway lobster (Nephrops norvegicus) is one of the most valuable resources in the Northeast Atlantic. However, overfishing has caused the decline of several Nephrops stocks over the last decades, particularly in the Nephrops Functional Units (FUs) 25 (NW Spain), 26-27 (NW Spain and North Portugal) and 31 (Cantabrian Sea, North Spain). Since 2003, the information provided by the very low level of landings and fishing effort of these three stocks was insufficient to carry out an adequate analytical assessment, so the base of the assessment has been the trends from commercial catch per unit effort (CPUE). The objective of this study was to carry out the first assessment of these three stocks with an analytical MSY-based model. A review of the available data was made and the stochastic Surplus Production Model in Continuous Time (SPiCT) was fitted for each FU. The results indicate an extremely low biomass for FUs 25 and 26-27 since the mid-nineties well below the reference points. For FU 31, on the other hand, estimated biomass is larger. Our findings also identified long-term temporal and spatial changes in the population dynamic of Nephrops in the Northwest Iberian coast. The results were compare with those obtained in the same stocks with other data-limited methods. Also the role of abiotic factors on the observed dynamic of the stocks was explored. The results of this study are not only relevant for the sustainable exploitation of Norway lobster stocks off the Northwest Iberian coast but provide valuable insights into the suitability and limitations of production models for the assessment of crustacean stocks in general.

The precautionary approach to fisheries management advocates for risk-averse management strategies that include biological reference points and account for scientific uncertainty (i.e. process, model and observation uncertainty). In this regard, two approaches have been recommended: (a) biomass reference points to safeguard against low stock biomass, and (b) uncertainty buffers that reduce the catch limit as a function of the scientific uncertainty. This study compares the effectiveness of these two precautionary approaches in recovering over-exploited fish stocks. We evaluate the performance of more than 80 harvest control rules (HCRs) within a stochastic management strategy evaluation (MSE) framework for three stocks with contrasting life-history parameters and under various levels of scientific uncertainty. The results show that both approaches reduce the risk of overfishing at the expense of expected yield. This risk-yield trade-off strongly depends on the HCRs, life-history parameters of the species, as well as the level of the scientific uncertainty. Nevertheless, some combinations of biomass threshold and limit reference points as well as uncertainty buffers lead to a more favourable risk-yield trade-off than other rules. This study elucidates the multiple factors affecting the effectiveness of management strategies and highlights key features of HCRs for precautionary fisheries management.

Small-scale fisheries (SSF) contribute to approximately half of the total landings of tuna and tuna-like species in the Indian Ocean and are an important form of employment and source of protein. Research into the properties and dynamics of SSF in East Africa are important for the assessment and sustainable management of fish stocks, however, detailed fisheries data are often inadequate or absent. Fisheries-dependent data on driftnet fisheries in Zanzibar, Tanzania, was collected during the northeast monsoon seasons in 2014 and 2015. The data describes the properties of the driftnet fisheries and allows for comparisons of the length composition of the landings of the SSF with large-scale industrial fisheries (IF) fishing in Tanzania’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). This data also facilitates the calculation of stock indicators for the five most abundant tuna and tuna-like species landed in Zanzibar. Results show that the two fisheries (SSF and IF) exploit the same stocks, and landings are representative of a similar length composition, while operating in different parts of Tanzania’s EEZ. High exploitation rates, above reference levels for all species were calculated, in agreement with official assessments by the IOTC, and suggest that calls for the expansion of the SSF should be reconsidered. The assessment and management of straddling stocks are discussed, as well as solutions to challenges faced by local observer programmes.
