Abstract

The current regulations on building envelope requirements are no longer related only to aspects of energy efficiency or guarantee of durability over time, but also to new performance scenarios concerning technological systems in relation to adaptation, mitigation and resilience to increasingly frequent extreme climate events. The research aims to analyse causes, effects and potential strategies to increase the resilience of the building envelope in case of extreme events, proposing solutions to reduce the consequences of the impact of flying debris on the building envelope. Abstract

The current scenario, crossed by contrasting flows where emergencies and development trends often coexist and increase gaps, highlights the need to ‘move’ from the change phase to the phase of change. On many fronts, it is evident that this need is determining an acceleration towards a transformation that has concrete Renaissance characteristics. An example is the use of the ‘multiscalar vision’ in research as a useful criterion for understanding phenomena, both material and immaterial. The contribution addresses the relationships between buildings and their contexts, assuming at the macro scale the stresses that phenomena, such as climate, ‘impose’ on the envelopes and, at the micro scale, the new qualitative and performance responses of envelope systems – innovative and not – that today characterize the panorama of contemporary architecture., L’attuale scenario, attraversato da flussi contrastanti dove emergenze e trend di sviluppo spesso convivono e aumentano divari, mette in luce la necessità di ‘spostarsi’ dalla fase di transizione a quella di cambiamento. Da molti versanti si evidenzia come questa necessità stia determinando un’accelerazione verso una trasformazione che abbia caratteri di concreto Rinascimento. Un esempio è l’impiego della ‘visione multiscalare’ nella ricerca come criterio utile alla comprensione di fenomeni, sia materiali che immateriali. Il contributo affronta le relazioni che intercorrono tra gli edifici e i loro contesti, assumendo alla scala macro le sollecitazioni che i fenomeni, quali quelli climatici, ‘impongono’ agli involucri e alla scala del micro le nuove risposte qualitative prestazionali dei sistemi di involucro – innovati e no – che oggi connotano il panorama dell’architettura contemporanea.

Abstract

The study refers to the ongoing research, aimed at defining a methodology that supports interventions that improve the resilience of the built environment, in a world of climate change. While it is known how the construction sector contributes to climate change, on the other hand, we also know that climate change substantially affects the resilience of the built environment. This situation therefore calls for the development of methodologies and tools useful for controlling the different dynamics that define relationships and synergies. With the use of new indicators and adaptive design approaches in sensitive environmental areas, we aim to investigate both "current conditions" and the applicability of strategies and solutions aimed at managing climate change in urban space, employing a new set of criteria. In particular, it was considered important to direct efforts towards the definition of adaptive envelopes, capable of controlling the two-way relationships between buildings and their context which influence the urban microclimate interdependently. The expected results are the following: the definition of a repertoire of urban assets that "trigger" climate change phenomena; the development of new indicators, to detect conditions of climate change in contexts; the definition of envelope models (useful for retrofits) with "plant-sensor" integration logics, for a "smart" approach in the microclimate control of the built environment. Abstract

HOPUS (Housing Praxis for Urban Sustainability) is a research project conducted by the department DASTEC Mediterranean University of Reggio Calabria, with various community and local partners. The project aimed to implement and promote the use of design codes for building sustainable development in European cities and create a local support group for testing the codes. The objective to start this process was to establish a synergy between research centers, governments and enterprises, in order to understand and improve the relationships built with the new quality framework for social, urban, housing and energy. Lo studio intende contribuire al dibattito sul ruolo delle infrastrutture di ricerca nelle dinamiche che in questo momento investono l'industria delle costruzioni, richiedendo a questa continue revisioni e spinte innovative. Abstract

HOPUS (Housing Praxis for Urban Sustainability) è un progetto di ricerca condotto dal dipartimento DASTEC dell'Università Mediterranea di Reggio Calabria, con vari partner comunitari e locali. Il progetto mirava a implementare e promuovere l'uso di codici di progettazione per lo sviluppo dell'edilizia sostenibile nelle città Europee e creare un gruppo di supporto locale per la sperimentazione dei codici. L'obiettivo per avviare questo processo consisteva nel definire una sinergia tra centri di ricerca, pubbliche amministrazioni e imprese, al fine di comprendere e migliorare le relazioni del costruito con il contesto per una nuova qualità sociale, urbana, abitativa ed energetica.
