Recently, pectin, a versatile polysaccharide with different industrial applications, has gained significant attention as an eco-friendly and functional ingredient. This study investigates pumpkin peels (Cucurbita maxima L., Mantua variety) as a novel source of pectin, using a microwave-assisted extraction method with citric acid-acidified water as solvent. The extraction conditions were optimized using a Design of Experiments approach, considering the solvent-to-solid ratio (SSR), pH, temperature, and extraction time. The optimized conditions (94.8 °C, 5 min, pH 1.5, and 46 mL/g SSR) resulted in a pectin yield of 18.05%. A comprehensive characterization of the extracted pectin was performed, including FT-IR spectroscopy, DSC, TGA, rheological properties, and techno-functional assessments such as water holding capacity and fat binding capacity. The results indicated a high degree of esterification (56.19 ± 0.87%), classifying the pumpkin peels (PP) extract as a high methoxyl pectin. PP pectin demonstrated potential as a stabilizer and emulsifying agent, although its high methoxyl content limits its use as a carrier for targeted bioactive delivery. The findings support the viability of using agricultural by-products to obtain valuable polysaccharides, contributing to waste valorization and sustainable industrial practices. Following a new approach, we prepared a nanoink with two separate photothermally responsive absorption bands. One is the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) absorption of gold nanoparticles (AuNP, d=17 nm), the second is the absorption band of two cyanine (Cy) dyes, Cy7‐C6 or Cy7‐C11, grafted to the AuNP surface through thiolated bridges of different lengths: the close proximity to the Au surface induces full quenching of the Cy fluorescence, resulting in thermal relaxation on irradiation. Attempts to full coat AuNP with the lipophilic Cy7‐C6 and Cy7‐C11 lead to precipitation from aqueous solutions. We thus prepared AuNP with partial pegylation (30, 50, or 70 %), using a long chain thiol‐terminated PEG bearing a ‐COOH function. Addition until saturation of either Cy7‐C6 or Cy7‐C11 to the partially pegylated AuNP gave the AuNP@Cy/PEGX% hybrids (X=30, 50, 70) that are stable in water and in the water/alcohol mixtures used to prepare the nanoinks. Further overcoating of AuNP@Cy7‐C6/PEG50 % with PAH (polyallylamine hydrochloride) avoids LSPR hybridization in the dry nanoink printouts, that present two separate bands. When irradiated with laser sources near their absorption maxima, the printouts of the AuNP@Cy7‐C6/PEG50 %@PAH nanoink respond on two channels, giving different temperature increases depending on the irradiation wavelengths. This enhances the potentiality of use of these nanoinks for photothermal anticounterfait printouts, making more difficult to reproduce the correct ΔT vs λirradiation output. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background/Objectives: In children, an association exists between muscle and bone, as well as between physical activity and osteogenesis. Impact loading is a factor in increasing bone accrual during growth. In this work, we explored the muscle–bone association in girls exposed to long-term physical activity at different levels of impact loading. Methods: Four groups of girls aged 7–16 were considered. The curricular (C; n = 22) group only had curricular physical activity at school (2 h/w). In addition to curricular physical activity, the girls in the dance (D; n = 21), gymnastics at lower training (GL; n = 14), and gymnastics at higher training (GH; n = 20) groups had 2 h/w, 4 h/w, and 4 h/w < training ≤ 12 h/w additional physical activity, respectively, for at least one year. A visual analysis estimated the respective amounts of impact-loading activity. The bone mineral content (BMC), areal bone mineral density (aBMD), and fat-free soft tissue mass (FFSTM) were assessed with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Results: The results showed that, after adjusting for several confounders, statistically significant correlations were present between muscle mass and several bone mineral variables. A regression analysis confirmed the correlation in the data, and showed the marginal role of other body composition variables and physical activity for predicting BMC and BMD. Conclusion: Skeletal muscle mass is a major determinant of the BMC and BMD of the TBLH, as well as of the Appendicular level, in girls exposed to different amounts of long-term impact-loading physical activity. Nanoparticles composed of inorganic boron-containing compounds represent a promising candidate as 10B carriers for BNCT. This study focuses on the synthesis, characterization, and assessment of the biological activity of composite nanomaterials based on boron carbide (B4C). Boron carbide is a compelling alternative to borated molecules due to its high volumetric B content, prolonged retention in biological systems, and low toxicity. These attributes lead to a substantial accumulation of B in tissues, eliminating the need for isotopically enriched compounds. In our approach, B4C nanoparticles were included in composite nanostructures with ultrasmall superparamagnetic nanoparticles (SPIONs), coated with poly (acrylic acid), and further functionalized with the fluorophore DiI. The successful internalization of these nanoparticles in HeLa cells was confirmed, and a significant uptake of 10B was observed. Micro-distribution studies were conducted using intracellular neutron autoradiography, providing valuable insights into the spatial distribution of the nanoparticles within cells. These findings strongly indicate that the developed nanomaterials hold significant promise as effective carriers for 10B in BNCT, showcasing their potential for advancing cancer treatment methodologies.
