Electropolishing is recommended for various biomedical applications of austenitic biomaterials because it enables to achieve high brightness, very low surface roughness, excellent corrosion resistance and reduced bacterial attachment without residual surface tensions. The quality of an electropolished surface depends strongly on the composition of used electrolyte and on the applied electropolishing conditions. In this article the corrosion properties of eight AISI 316L surfaces electropolished in the same solution but at the different conditions were evaluated on the bases of the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) test and exposure immersion test. The aim was to find whether in the frame of recommended electropolishing conditions (temperature, current density, time) the optimal combination exists which would provide the best corrosion properties of the surface passive film. The results showed that the electropolishing temperature 50 ºC should be preferred due to the lower roughness parameters and minimizing the possibility of the bacterial attachment.

Al has very good corrosion resistance and corrosion properties. The corrosion resistance of Al-cast alloys is different because these alloys contain a lot of elements, especially in secondary alloys, which contain more impurity elements, of which Fe is the most common. This study deals with secondary AlSi7Mg0.3 cast alloys, which contain more Fe and are affected by a chloride corrosive environment. This environment was selected based on the application of castings in the automotive industry. The main object was to research the effect of such an environment on basic mechanical properties and fatigue properties. The results show that a higher Fe content does not lead to a significant reduction in the properties of the casting, and the chloride environment is not so harmful. Therefore, it can be stated that the investigated secondary sand-cast experimental materials can replace primary alloys without losing the required corrosion and mechanical properties.

The article focuses on the analysis of the internal damping changes depending on the amplitude of the magnesium alloy AZ31. Internal damping reflects the ability of the material irreversibly dissipating mechanical energy oscillations. It means that the material of high internal damping ability is able to significantly reduce the vibration amplitude. Internal damping is, generally, dependent on many factors (temperature, material purity, grain size, mechanical and thermal processing, etc.) and its value is determined by interactions between various mechanisms dissipation of mechanical energy. Ultrasonic resonance method was used in experimental measurements, which is based on continuous excitation of oscillations of the specimen, and the entire apparatus vibrates at a frequency which is near to the resonance. Starting resonance frequency for all measurements was about f = 20470 Hz.

Amplitude dependent internal friction (ADIF) was measured in three AZ magnesium alloys. Two types of experiments were performed: ADIF was measured step by step with the increasing strain amplitude and ADIF was measured after predeformation of samples in torsion. All experiments were done at room temperature. The quality factor was used as a measure of internal friction (IF). The quality factor decreased in the region of smaller amplitudes, and approaching some critical amplitude, εcr, rapidly increased. This critical amplitude increased with increasing maximum strain amplitude and predeformation of samples up to ~6%. Such behavior can be explained by considering mobile solute atoms, which may migrate along the dislocation line in the region of smaller amplitudes and perpendicular to the dislocation line in the region of higher amplitudes. A competition between dragging and depinning of solute atoms with dislocation lines may very well explain the measured dependencies.

The article is focused on the analysis of changes in the dependence on temperature on the aluminium alloy EN AC 51200 (10,1% Mg, 1,32% Si and 0,43% Mn) by internal friction. Internal friction is a property of the material measured on the ultrasonic resonant apparatus at a frequency of about f = 20470 Hz. The measured temperature range was from 50 °C up to 420 °C. The precise measurement of the inter-nal friction can be monitored on an ongoing process by structural changes and various mechanisms that prevent these changes.

Thermomechanically processed high-strength steels feature specific fracture behavior. One of the decisive criteria for their application is their stability against internal defects during impact loads, especially in connection with the welding. The work is focused on experimental analyses of the influence of welding on static and dynamic fracture toughness of Strenx 700MC steel. The fracture toughness was determined using the circumferentially notched round bar specimens during static loads and two dynamic load levels. To achieve a homogeneous zone for the requirements of fracture toughness tests, simulation of the welding influence was performed. Fractographic and metallographic analyses described a specific fracture behavior controlled by the internal structural heterogeneity. A limiting degradation process due to welding was identified by the microstructural analysis.

The aim of this paper is to show wear properties of different types of filler metals aimed for hard facing and exploitation in dry condition. Testing of wear resistance is done in laboratory on prepared samples/models in order to simulate real exploitation conditions. Samples were made by hard facing of carbon steel using 4 different filler metals. Hard facing was done by using MMA welding method in three layers with enough height so samples could be made. After samples were made, the hardness and microstructure of all zones of hard facing were determined. Testing of wear resistance is done using block on disc contact on samples made from pure weld metal. As a parameter for estimates of the wear resistance of models it was used volume of worn material in mm3. Metallographic investigations and hardness measurements were used as additional parameter for drawing the conclusions.

The effect of possible modification and refining effect of Al-Cu-P-based pre-alloy combined with Fe on the microstructure and the silicon morphology change in hypereutectic Al-Si cast alloy was studied. The samples in the as-cast state were observed by optical and scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The 3D morphology of both primary and eutectic silicon was observed by using colour and deep etching in detail. The results showed that the AlCu19P1.4 pre-alloy (1.07 wt.%) combined with the addition of Fe (0.02 wt.%) has a significant effect on the change of the amount, size and morphology of primary Si. This is significantly refined and changes the shape from a coarse irregular star-shaped, polyhedral, or plate-like shape to a fine polyhedral shape. The average size of the primary Si is reduced by about of 78 % from 135 μm to 28 μm and the number of primary Si particles increased from 7.4 to 237. No change in the morphology of the eutectic Si was observed; a refinement of the structure from a coarse needle/plate-like to a fine plate-like structure was seen. The depth etching method using HCl was very effective in the study of the 3D silicon morphology observed, which could be observed in detail without the presence of artefacts.

In the paper, we present the results of an investigation of polymethylmetacrylate’s birefringence induced due to applying high-load. The stress-induced birefringence of the polymethylmetacrylate samples was experimentally investigated by an apparatus combining an in-house made plane polariscope with a machine for fatigue testing of materials. A halogen lamp was used as the source of white light. The polariscope’s basis was formed by two sets of plane polarizers, one designed for visible (470-750) nm and another one for near-infrared (900-1800) nm spectral range, respectively. The investigated sample was placed between the polarizers and light that passed through the polariscope was collected by an optical fiber connected to an appropriate optical spectral analyzer. The spectra of transmitted light were measured as a function of load and their analysis provided information on the load-induced birefringence of the investigated polymethylmetacrylate samples.

This paper presents experimental measurement of the first stress invariant on the plate with hole at fatigue testing machine due to adiabatic elastic deformation. The theoretical part is concentrated on the theory of thermal stress analysis focusing on thermoelastic analysis. The experimental part is dedicated to the postprocessing of the measured data including analytical and numerical solutions for the plate with hole using finite element method (FEM).

The article deals with the determining of fatigue lifetime of structural materials during multiaxial cyclic loading. The aim of this investigation is to evaluate the influence on fatigue behavior of the welded aluminum alloy EN AW 6063-T66. Experimental device was designed for combined bending - torque loading. The experimental part was focused on the modeling of combined biaxial loading and determining the number of cycles to fracture in the region of low-cycle fatigue. In-phase loading can be treated fairly well using the conventional hypotheses (von Mises or Tresca) on basis of nominal, structural or local strains or stresses. Based on the experimental results the fatigue design curves are compared to fatigue data from base metal and weldments.
