1. Quasi-Dirac Heavy Neutral Leptons in the Left-Right Symmetric Model

Abstract: We discuss the phenomenology of a pair of degenerate GeV-scale Heavy Neutral Leptons within the Left-Right Symmetric Model (LRSM) framework, with the third fermion serving as a dark matter candidate. We highlight the potential of the recently approved SHiP experiment to test the existence of the light DM species, and the signatures of lepton number violation as a possible experimental probe of the model in various experiments. Our findings include concrete predictions, in some part of the model's parameter space, for the effective right-handed couplings $(V^{R}_{e})^2:(V^{R}_{\mu})^2:(V^{R}_{\tau})^2 = 0.16:0.47:0.38$ (normal neutrino hierarchy), $0.489 : 0.22 : 0.30$ (inverted hierarchy) of the degenerate pair., Comment: 31 pages, 11 figures

2. Unveiling new physics with discoveries at Intensity Frontier

Abstract: The idea of feebly interacting particles (FIPs) has emerged as an important approach to address challenges beyond the Standard Model. The next generation of Intensity Frontier experiments is set to explore these particles in greater depth. While many experiments may detect FIP signals in unexplored regions of masses and couplings, interpretation of the properties of particles behind these signals is typically neglected. In this paper, we present a novel framework designed to systematically determine the models behind a potential signal. Our approach allows us to assess the scientific reach of experiments beyond the concept of sensitivity to the smallest coupling constant leading to a detectable signal. We clarify the potential impact such signals could have on particle physics models. 3. New physics at the Intensity Frontier: how much can we learn and how?

Abstract: Intensity Frontier experiments are often evaluated by the smallest coupling it can probe, irrespective of what particle can be found or the scientific significance of its detection. In this work, we propose a new framework that determines the number of events required to characterize new particle properties. For example, we show that Heavy Neutral Leptons require 100 events to establish the neutrino mass hierarchy, and 1000 events to reveal the Majorana phase of active neutrinos. Abstract: The increasing interest in Long-Lived Particles (LLPs) has led to numerous proposed experiments in order to search for them. However, the sensitivity estimates published by these experiments tend to rely on disparate assumptions. To ensure an accurate comparison of their potential to find LLPs, a unified estimation of their sensitivity is therefore required. In this contribution, we introduce \texttt{SensCalc}, a \texttt{Mathematica}-based code that uses a semi-analytic approach to calculate the event rate of GeV-scale LLPs, and we present several case studies., Comment: EPS-HEP 2023 proceedings

5. Measuring lepton number violation in heavy neutral lepton decays at the future muon collider

Abstract: The future muon collider has the potential to discover feebly interacting particles in a wide range of masses above the electroweak scale. It is particularly suitable to search for heavy neutral leptons (HNLs), as their production cross section $\sigma \sim m_W^{-2}$ is not suppressed by the new physics scale. We demonstrate that the muon collider, with the capacity to observe up to $10^5$ events in the previously unexplored TeV mass range, provides the means to measure the fraction of lepton number violating (LNV) processes with precision at the level of a percent. This capability enables elucidating the nature of HNLs, allowing us to differentiate between Majorana, Dirac, and non-minimal scenarios featuring multiple degenerate HNLs. We link the observed fraction of LNV processes to the parameters of the model with three degenerate HNLs, which could be responsible for generating baryon asymmetry in the Universe. Additionally, we present a simple estimate for the number of signal events, as well as analyze the feasibility of vector boson fusion processes in searches for HNLs., Comment: 24 pages, 8 figures

6. Towards the optimal beam dump experiment to search for feebly interacting particles

Abstract: Future searches for new physics beyond the Standard Model are without doubt in need of a diverse approach and experiments with complementary sensitivities to different types of classes of models. One of the directions that should be explored is feebly interacting particles (FIPs) with masses below the electroweak scale. The interest in FIPs has significantly increased in the last ten years. Searches for FIPs at colliders have intrinsic limitations in the region they may probe, significantly restricting exploration of the mass range $m_{\text{FIP}} < 5-10$\,GeV/c$^2$. Beam dump-like experiments, characterized by the possibility of extremely high luminosity at relatively high energies and the effective coverage of the production and decay acceptance, are the perfect option to generically explore the ``coupling frontier'' of the light FIPs. Several proposals for beam-dump detectors are currently being considered by CERN for implementation at the SPS ECN3 beam facility. In this we paper we analyse in depth how the characteristic geometric parameters of a beam dump experiment influence the signal yield. We apply an inclusive approach by considering the phenomenology of different types of FIPs. From the various production modes and kinematics, we demonstrate that the optimal layout that maximises the production and decay acceptance consists of a detector located on the beam-axis, at the shortest possible distance from the target defined by the systems required to suppress the beam-induced backgrounds., Comment: v2: matches the version accepted by EPJC

Abstract: Abstract The SHiP-charm project was proposed to measure the associated charm production induced by 400 GeV/c protons in a thick target, including the contribution from cascade production. An optimisation run was performed in July 2018 at CERN SPS using a hybrid setup. The high resolution of nuclear emulsions acting as vertex detector was complemented by electronic detectors for kinematic measurements and muon identification. Here we present first results on the analysis of nuclear emulsions exposed in the 2018 run, which prove the capability of reconstructing proton interaction vertices in a harsh environment, where the signal is largely dominated by secondary particles produced in hadronic and electromagnetic showers within the lead target.

FCC-hh would push both the energy and intensity frontiers of searches for new physics particles. Abstract: We discuss the consequences of the quantum uncertainty on the spectrum of the electron emitted by the $\beta$-processes of a tritium atom bound to a graphene sheet. We analyze quantitatively the issue recently raised in [Cheipesh et al., Phys. Rev. D 104, 116004 (2021)], and discuss the relevant time scales and the degrees of freedom that can contribute to the intrinsic spread in the electron energy. We perform careful calculations of the potential between tritium and graphene with different coverages and geometries. Abstract: The electron-positron stage of the Future Circular Collider, FCC-ee, is a frontier factory for Higgs, top, electroweak, and flavour physics. It is designed to operate in a 100 km circular tunnel built at CERN, and will serve as the first step towards $\geq$ 100 TeV proton-proton collisions. In addition to an essential and unique Higgs program, it offers powerful opportunities to discover direct or indirect evidence of physics beyond the Standard Model. Direct searches for long-lived particles at FCC-ee could be particularly fertile in the high-luminosity $Z$ run, where $5\times 10^{12}$ $Z$ bosons are anticipated to be produced for the configuration with two interaction points. The high statistics of Higgs bosons, $W$ bosons and top quarks in very clean experimental conditions could offer additional opportunities at other collision energies. Three physics cases producing long-lived signatures at FCC-ee are highlighted and studied in this paper: heavy neutral leptons (HNLs), axion-like particles (ALPs), and exotic decays of the Higgs boson. Abstract: High energy collisions at the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (LHC) produce a large number of particles along the beam collision axis, outside of the acceptance of existing LHC experiments. The proposed Forward Physics Facility (FPF), to be located several hundred meters from the ATLAS interaction point and shielded by concrete and rock, will host a suite of experiments to probe Standard Model (SM) processes and search for physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM). In this report, we review the status of the civil engineering plans and the experiments to explore the diverse physics signals that can be uniquely probed in the forward region. FPF experiments will be sensitive to a broad range of BSM physics through searches for new particle scattering or decay signatures and deviations from SM expectations in high statistics analyses with TeV neutrinos in this low-background environment. High statistics neutrino detection will also provide valuable data for fundamental topics in perturbative and non-perturbative QCD and in weak interactions. Experiments at the FPF will enable synergies between forward particle production at the LHC and astroparticle physics to be exploited. Abstract: Abstract The future muon collider has the potential to discover feebly interacting particles in a wide range of masses above the electroweak scale. It is particularly suitable to search for heavy neutral leptons (HNLs), as their production cross section σ ∼ m W − 2 $$ \sigma \sim {m}_W^{-2} $$ is not suppressed by the new physics scale. We demonstrate that with the capacity to observe up to 105 events in the previously unexplored TeV mass range, the muon collider provides the means to measure the fraction of lepton number violating (LNV) processes with precision at the level of a percent. This capability enables elucidating the nature of HNLs, allowing us to differentiate between Majorana, Dirac, and non-minimal scenarios featuring multiple degenerate HNLs. We link the observed fraction of LNV processes to the parameters of the model with three degenerate HNLs, which could be responsible for generating baryon asymmetry in the Universe. Additionally, we present a simple estimate for the number of signal events, as well as analyze the feasibility of vector boson fusion processes in searches for HNLs.

17. Towards the optimal beam dump experiment to search for feebly interacting particles

Abstract: Abstract Future searches for new physics beyond the Standard Model are without doubt in need of a diverse approach and experiments with complementary sensitivities to different types of classes of models. One of the directions that should be explored is feebly interacting particles (FIPs) with masses below the electroweak scale. The interest in FIPs has significantly increased in the last ten years. Searches for FIPs at colliders have intrinsic limitations in the region they may probe, significantly restricting exploration of the mass range $$m_{\text {FIP}} < 5{-}10$$ m FIP < 5 - 10 GeV/c $$^2$$ 2 . Beam dump-like experiments, characterized by the possibility of extremely high luminosity at relatively high energies and the effective coverage of the production and decay acceptance, are the perfect option to generically explore the “coupling frontier” of the light FIPs. Several proposals for beam-dump detectors are currently being considered by CERN for implementation at the SPS ECN3 beam facility. In this paper, we analyse in depth how the characteristic geometric parameters of a beam dump experiment influence the signal yield. We apply an inclusive approach by considering the phenomenology of different types of FIPs. From the various production modes and kinematics, we demonstrate that the optimal layout that maximises the production and decay acceptance consists of a detector located on the beam-axis, at the shortest possible distance from the target defined by the systems required to suppress the beam-induced backgrounds.

Abstract: Recent analysis of the viability of solid state-based relic neutrino detectors has revealed the fundamental necessity for the use of heavy, $A>100$, $\beta$-decayers as neutrino targets. Of all heavy isotopes, $^{171}$Tm and $^{151}$Sm stand out for their sufficiently low decay energies, reasonable half-life times and stable daughter nuclei. However, the crucial bit of information, that is the soft neutrino capture cross-section is missing for both isotopes. The main reason for that is a particular type of $\beta$-decay, which precludes a simple link between the isotope's half-life time and the neutrino capture rate. Here we propose an experimental method to bypass this difficulty and obtain the capture cross-section of a soft neutrino by a given isotope from the isotope's $\beta$-spectrum., Comment: 11 pages

We study HNL decay channel $N\to e^{+}e^{-}\nu/\mu^{+}\mu^{-}\nu$ and show that, in addition to the constraints on the HNL's mixings with $\nu_e$ or $\nu_{\mu}$, the same data also implies limits on the HNLs that mix only with $\nu_{\tau}$ and have masses in the range $380 \text{ MeV}

Abstract: SND@LHC is an approved experiment equipped to detect scattering of neutrinos produced in the far-forward direction at the LHC, and aimed to measure their properties. In addition, the detector has a potential to search for new feebly interacting particles (FIPs) that may be produced in proton-proton collisions. In this paper, we discuss FIPs signatures at SND@LHC considering two classes of particles: stable FIPs that may be detected via their scattering, and unstable FIPs that decay inside the detector. We estimate the sensitivity of SND@LHC to probe scattering of leptophobic dark matter, and to detect decays of neutrino, scalar, and vector portal particles. Finally, we also compare and qualitatively analyze the potential of SND@LHC and FASER/FASER{\nu} experiments for these searches., Comment: 28 pages, 9 figures

Abstract: The extension of the Standard Model with two gauge-singlet Majorana fermions can simultaneously explain two beyond-the-Standard-model phenomena: neutrino masses and oscillations, as well as the origin of the matter-antimatter asymmetry in the Universe. The parameters of such a model are constrained by the neutrino oscillation data, direct accelerator searches, big bang nucleosynthesis, and requirement of successful baryogenesis. We show that the combination of all these constraints still leaves an allowed region in the parameter space below the kaon mass. Abstract: After rapid approval and installation, the SND@LHC Collaboration was able to gather data successfully in 2022 and 2023. Neutrino interactions from νμs originating at the LHC IP1 were observed. Since muons constitute the major background for neutrino interactions, the muon flux entering the acceptance was also measured. To improve the rejection power of the detector and to increase the fiducial volume, a third Veto plane was recently installed. The energy resolution of the calorimeter system was measured in a test beam. This will help with the identification of νe interactions that can be used to probe charm production in the pseudo-rapidity range of SND@LHC (7.2 < η < 8.4). Events with three outgoing muons have been observed and are being studied. With no vertex in the target, these events are very likely from muon trident production in the rock before the detector. Events with a vertex in the detector could be from trident production, photon conversion, or positron annihilation. To enhance SND@LHC’s physics case, an upgrade is planned for HL-LHC that will increase the statistics and reduce the systematics. The installation of a magnet will allow the separation of νμ from ν¯μ

Abstract: Abstract The Future Circular hadron Collider (FCC-hh) is a proposed successor of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). FCC-hh would push both the energy and intensity frontiers of searches for new physics particles. In particular, due to higher energy and luminosity than at the LHC, at FCC-hh there would be produced around ≃ 30 times larger amount of B mesons and ≃ 120 times of W bosons, which then may decay into feebly interacting particles. In this paper we demonstrate the potential of FCC-hh by studying its sensitivity to heavy neutral leptons (HNLs) with masses m N < m B . We consider various locations of a displaced decay volume embedded in the planned infrastructure of FCC-hh. We demonstrate that FCC-hh may substantially improve the reach of the parameter space of HNLs as compared to the searches proposed at the LHC.

Abstract: Abstract The Search for Hidden Particles (SHiP) Collaboration has proposed a general-purpose experimental facility operating in beam-dump mode at the CERN SPS accelerator to search for light, feebly interacting particles. In the baseline configuration, the SHiP experiment incorporates two complementary detectors. The upstream detector is designed for recoil signatures of light dark matter (LDM) scattering and for neutrino physics, in particular with tau neutrinos. It consists of a spectrometer magnet housing a layered detector system with high-density LDM/neutrino target plates, emulsion-film technology and electronic high-precision tracking. The total detector target mass amounts to about eight tonnes. The downstream detector system aims at measuring visible decays of feebly interacting particles to both fully reconstructed final states and to partially reconstructed final states with neutrinos, in a nearly background-free environment. The detector consists of a 50 $$\mathrm { \,m}$$ m long decay volume under vacuum followed by a spectrometer and particle identification system with a rectangular acceptance of 5 m in width and 10 m in height. Using the high-intensity beam of 400 $$\,\mathrm {GeV}$$ GeV protons, the experiment aims at profiting from the $$4\times 10^{19}$$ 4 × 10 19 protons per year that are currently unexploited at the SPS, over a period of 5–10 years. This allows probing dark photons, dark scalars and pseudo-scalars, and heavy neutral leptons with GeV-scale masses in the direct searches at sensitivities that largely exceed those of existing and projected experiments. The sensitivity to light dark matter through scattering reaches well below the dark matter relic density limits in the range from a few $${\mathrm {\,MeV\!/}c^2}$$ MeV / c 2 up to 100 MeV-scale masses, and it will be possible to study tau neutrino interactions with unprecedented statistics. This paper describes the SHiP experiment baseline setup and the detector systems, together with performance results from prototypes in test beams, as it was prepared for the 2020 Update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics. The expected detector performance from simulation is summarised at the end.

Abstract: The electron-positron stage of the Future Circular Collider, FCC-ee, is a frontier factory for Higgs, top, electroweak, and flavour physics. It is designed to operate in a 100 km circular tunnel built at CERN, and will serve as the first step towards ≥100 TeV proton-proton collisions. In addition to an essential and unique Higgs program, it offers powerful opportunities to discover direct or indirect evidence of physics beyond the Standard Model. Direct searches for long-lived particles at FCC-ee could be particularly fertile in the high-luminosity Z run, where 5 × 1012Z bosons are anticipated to be produced for the configuration with two interaction points. The high statistics of Higgs bosons, W bosons and top quarks in very clean experimental conditions could offer additional opportunities at other collision energies. Three physics cases producing long-lived signatures at FCC-ee are highlighted and studied in this paper: heavy neutral leptons (HNLs), axion-like particles (ALPs), and exotic decays of the Higgs boson. These searches motivate out-of-the-box optimization of experimental conditions and analysis techniques, which could lead to improvements in other physics searches.

Abstract: Abstract The extension of the Standard Model with two gauge-singlet Majorana fermions can simultaneously explain two beyond-the-Standard-model phenomena: neutrino masses and oscillations, as well as the origin of the matter-antimatter asymmetry in the Universe. The parameters of such a model are constrained by the neutrino oscillation data, direct accelerator searches, big bang nucleosynthesis, and requirement of successful baryogenesis. We show that their combination still leaves an allowed region in the parameter space below the kaon mass. This region can be probed by the further searches of NA62, DUNE, or SHiP experiments.

Abstract: We report the direct observation of muon neutrino interactions with the SND@LHC detector at the Large Hadron Collider. A data set of proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13.6\,$TeV collected by SND@LHC in 2022 is used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.8$\,\rm{fb}^{-1}$. The search is based on information from the active electronic components of the SND@LHC detector, which covers the pseudo-rapidity region of $7.2 < \eta < 8.4$, inaccessible to the other experiments at the collider. Muon neutrino candidates are identified through their charged-current interaction topology, with a track propagating through the entire length of the muon detector. After selection cuts, 8 $\nu_\mu$ interaction candidate events remain with an estimated background of 0.076 events, yielding a significance of seven standard deviations for the observed $\nu_\mu$ signal., Comment: Submitted to Phys. Abstract: The existence of nonzero neutrino masses points to the likely existence of multiple Standard Model neutral fermions. When such states are heavy enough that they cannot be produced in oscillations, they are referred to as heavy neutral leptons (HNLs). In this white paper, we discuss the present experimental status of HNLs including colliders, beta decay, accelerators, as well as astrophysical and cosmological impacts. We discuss the importance of continuing to search for HNLs, and its potential impact on our understanding of key fundamental questions, and additionally we outline the future prospects for next-generation future experiments or upcoming accelerator run scenarios.

Abstract: High energy collisions at the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (LHC) produce a large number of particles along the beam collision axis, outside of the acceptance of existing LHC experiments. The proposed Forward Physics Facility (FPF), to be located several hundred meters from the ATLAS interaction point and shielded by concrete and rock, will host a suite of experiments to probe standard model (SM) processes and search for physics beyond the standard model (BSM). In this report, we review the status of the civil engineering plans and the experiments to explore the diverse physics signals that can be uniquely probed in the forward region. FPF experiments will be sensitive to a broad range of BSM physics through searches for new particle scattering or decay signatures and deviations from SM expectations in high statistics analyses with TeV neutrinos in this low-background environment. High statistics neutrino detection will also provide valuable data for fundamental topics in perturbative and non-perturbative QCD and in weak interactions. Experiments at the FPF will enable synergies between forward particle production at the LHC and astroparticle physics to be exploited. We report here on these physics topics, on infrastructure, detector, and simulation studies, and on future directions to realize the FPF's physics potential.

Abstract: The existence of nonzero neutrino masses points to the likely existence of multiple Standard Model neutral fermions. When such states are heavy enough that they cannot be produced in oscillations, they are referred to as heavy neutral leptons (HNLs). In this white paper, we discuss the present experimental status of HNLs including colliders, beta decay, accelerators, as well as astrophysical and cosmological impacts. We discuss the importance of continuing to search for HNLs, and its potential impact on our understanding of key fundamental questions, and additionally we outline the future prospects for next-generation future experiments or upcoming accelerator run scenarios.

Abstract: The BDF/SHiP collaboration has proposed a general-purpose intensity-frontier experimental facility operating in beam-dump mode at the CERN SPS accelerator to search for feebly interacting GeV-scale particles and to perform measurements in neutrino physics. BDF/SHiP complements the world-wide program of New Physics searches by exploring a large region of parameter space which cannot be addressed by other experiments, and which reaches several orders of magnitude below existing bounds. The SHiP detector is sensitive both to decay and scattering signatures of models with heavy neutral leptons, dark photons, dark scalars, axion-like particles, light dark matter and other feebly interacting particles. In neutrino physics, BDF/SHiP can perform unprecedented measurements with tau neutrinos and neutrino-induced charm production. Following the Technical Proposal submitted in 2015, the subsequent three-year Comprehensive Design Study (CDS), and the recent study of BDF/SHiP in existing beam facilities around the SPS, this paper restates the motivation and reports on the implementation and physics performance of BDF/SHiP in the SPS ECN3 high-intensity beam facility.

Abstract: In July 2018 an optimization run for the proposed charm cross section measurement for SHiP was performed at the CERN SPS. A heavy, moving target instrumented with nuclear emulsion films followed by a silicon pixel tracker was installed in front of the Goliath magnet at the H4 proton beamline. Behind the magnet, scintillating-fibre, drift-tube and RPC detectors were placed. The purpose of this run was to validate the measurement's feasibility, to develop the required analysis tools and fine-tune the detector layout. In this paper, we present the track reconstruction in the pixel tracker and the track matching with the moving emulsion detector. The pixel detector performed as expected and it is shown that, after proper alignment, a vertex matching rate of 87 % is achieved., 10 pages, 5 figures; for replacement: added detector efficiencies and track resolution, updated description of moving pattern and detector orientation, all opening angles now in cartesian coordinate system; Editor: Nikolaus Owtscharenko; to be published in JINST

Abstract: SND@LHC is a compact and stand-alone experiment designed to perform measurements with neutrinos produced at the LHC in the pseudo-rapidity region of ${7.2 < \eta < 8.4}$. The experiment is located 480 m downstream of the ATLAS interaction point, in the TI18 tunnel. The detector is composed of a hybrid system based on an 830 kg target made of tungsten plates, interleaved with emulsion and electronic trackers, also acting as an electromagnetic calorimeter, and followed by a hadronic calorimeter and a muon identification system. The detector is able to distinguish interactions of all three neutrino flavours, which allows probing the physics of heavy flavour production at the LHC in the very forward region. This region is of particular interest for future circular colliders and for very high energy astrophysical neutrino experiments. The detector is also able to search for the scattering of Feebly Interacting Particles. In its first phase, the detector will operate throughout LHC Run 3 and collect a total of 250 $\text{fb}^{-1}$., Comment: 57 pages. To be published in JINST

Abstract: The electron-positron stage of the Future Circular Collider, FCC-ee, is a frontier factory for Higgs, top, electroweak, and flavour physics. It is designed to operate in a 100 km circular tunnel built at CERN, and will serve as the first step towards $\geq$ 100 TeV proton-proton collisions. In addition to an essential and unique Higgs program, it offers powerful opportunities to discover direct or indirect evidence of physics beyond the Standard Model. Direct searches for long-lived particles at FCC-ee could be particularly fertile in the high-luminosity $Z$ run, where $5\times 10^{12}$ $Z$ bosons are anticipated to be produced for the configuration with two interaction points. The high statistics of Higgs bosons, $W$ bosons and top quarks in very clean experimental conditions could offer additional opportunities at other collision energies. Three physics cases producing long-lived signatures at FCC-ee are highlighted and studied in this paper: heavy neutral leptons (HNLs), axion-like particles (ALPs), and exotic decays of the Higgs boson. These searches motivate out-of-the-box optimization of experimental conditions and analysis techniques, that could lead to improvements in other physics searches., Contribution to Snowmass 2021

When such states are heavy enough that they cannot be produced in oscillations, they are referred to as heavy neutral leptons (HNLs). In this white paper, we discuss the present experimental status of HNLs including colliders, beta decay, accelerators, as well as astrophysical and cosmological impacts. We discuss the importance of continuing to search for HNLs, and its potential impact on our understanding of key fundamental questions, and additionally we outline the future prospects for next-generation future experiments or upcoming accelerator run scenarios

Abstract: We discuss the consequences of the quantum uncertainty on the spectrum of the electron emitted by the beta-processes of a tritium atom bound to a graphene sheet. We analyze quantitatively the issue recently raised by Cheipesh, Cheianov, and Boyarsky [Phys. Rev. D 104, 116004 (2021)], and discuss the relevant timescales and the degrees of freedom that can contribute to the intrinsic spread in the electron energy. We perform careful calculations of the potential between tritium and graphene with different coverages and geometries. With this at hand, we propose possible avenues to mitigate the effect of the quantum uncertainty.
