1. The cooling rate of chondrules in Semarkona (LL 3.00) ordinary chondrite as inferred from Fe-Mg zoning of olivine

Abstract

The 41st ISAS Lunar and Planetary Symposium (August 6-8, 2008. Institute of Space and Astronautical Science, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA)), We developed a new model to calculate the cooling rate (or burial depth) by using the Fe-Mg chemical zoning profile of olivine considering diffusional modification during crystal growth, because chemical zoning provides information on thermal history of minerals. Although dynamic crystallization experiments are useful for estimating the cooling rate, experimental results only show the possibility of the cooling rate. It is, therefore, important to determine the cooling rate of actual olivines in rocks. We applied our model to calculating the cooling rate for olivines of type II porphyritic olivine chondrules in the Semarkona (LL 3.00) ordinary chondrite. The cooling rates show a wide range from 0.8 C/h to 2400 C/h for olivines in different chondrules. Although these results are broadly consistent with those obtained by dynamic crystallization experiments, the lower limit of the calculated cooling rate, 0.8 C/h, is about one order magnitude slower than experimental results. Abstract

We previously developed a model to analyze chemical zoning in olivine on the basis of Fe-Mg interdiffusion during olivine crystal growth and to obtain the cooling rate (or burial depth) of parent rock. We verified this model by using Fe-Mg zoning in olivine produced by dynamic crystallization experiments for bulk chemical compositions like a Martian meteorite (Yamato 980459) and a lunar meteorite (LAP 02205). The calculated zoning profiles are in good agreement with the experimentally produced profiles and the calculated cooling rates are also in good agreement with the experimental cooling rates. These results mean that our model is valid for calculating the cooling rate on the basis of Fe-Mg zoning considering the crystal growth and that the Fe-Mg interdiffusion coefficient used is relatively accurate., 資料番号: AA0063505002

Abstract

The cooling rate (and burial depth) was recalculated by using different diffusion coefficients from those used in the previous studies on the basis of the Fe-Mg and CaO chemical zoning profiles observed for pallasite (Esquel) olivine. The cooling rate obtained from the Fe-Mg zoning profile is broadly consistent with that from the CaO profile and is 2 to 5 C/yr (300 to 200 m in depth) for cooling from 1,100 C. The results of recalculation for the cooling rate also show a relatively fast cooling at the high-temperature range. Therefore, a shallow origin for pallasites during high temperature should be further explored., 資料番号: AA0047898057
