During the large flood of the Vistula River in 2010, the riverine brackish water surface plume extended up to 70 km into the Gulf of Gdańsk (Baltic Sea), leaving a thin layer of medium-grained sand deposits. It inspired a search for palaeoflood records in marine sediments. Thus, we aimed to identify the most useful flood indicators and apply them to reveal palaeoflood records in sediment cores from the Gulf of Gdańsk. The study is based on analyses of surface samples, collected during and one year after the 2010 flood, and two long sediment cores, which were subjected to high-resolution grain size, diatom, and geochemical analyses, while chronology was based on the combined AMS 14C, 210Pb and 137Cs dating. It was found that, in a water depth of less than 30 m, modern large flood deposits were not preserved after a year. Sediment cores retrieved from greater water depths (over 60 m) were composed of sandy mud, and most of the 1 cm thick sediment samples were characterized by unimodal grain size distribution. However, some of the samples were bimodal, with the additional mode in fine-grained fractions, which is interpreted to be the result of direct deposition from riverine flood surface water plume. The diatom assemblages revealed a moderate downcore variability, except for the intervals characterized by bimodal grain size distributions. They contained elevated amounts of benthic oligohalobous (freshwater) and decreased euhalobous and mesohalobous taxa, supporting the likely interpretation of these layers as deposited during river flood events. During the last c. 4 ka, a dozen major flood events were identified. However, their application to flood climate reconstruction is challenging because of relatively frequent and partly unknown changes in major river mouth positions in the past. We suggest that thin deposits of major floods left on the seafloor and subjected to further mixing maybe still recognized using a combination of high-resolution grain size distribution and diatom analyses supplemented by a good understanding of the depositional system history. Effects of low concentrations of cadmium ions on growth, photosynthesis, and cell ultrastructure of microalga Ankistrodesmus sp. B-11 were investigated. The addition of cadmium to growth medium at concentrations of 0.005–0.02 mg/L led to a significant decrease in the number of Ankistrodesmus sp. B-11 cells relatively to that in the untreated culture. The addition of cadmium at concentrations >0.05 mg/L completely stopped cell growth. Cadmium ions induced ultrastructural changes in the arrangement of thylakoids within the stroma, the detachment of thylakoid membranes with the formation of void interthylakoid spaces, and a significant increase in vacuolization of microalgal cells. Simultaneous measurements of fluorescence induction curves and redox transformations of photosystem I components on a microsecond time scale by means of a M‑PEA-2 fluorometer revealed that cadmium ions inhibit electron transport in photosystem II (PSII). The quantum yield of electron transport in PSII (φEo) and the performance index (PIABS) were found to decrease; the photoreduction of P700 pigment was decelerated, while energy dissipation (DI0/RC) and ΔpH-dependent nonphotochemical quenching (qE) increased significantly under the action of cadmium. The performance index (PIABS) was the most sensitive parameter; it can be used for the detection of early toxic effects of cadmium ions on algae.

Studies of the diversity and distribution of freshwater cyanophages are generally limited to the small geographical areas, in many cases including only one or few lakes. Data from dozens of various lakes distributed at a larger distance are necessary to understand their spatial distribution and sensitivity to biotic and abiotic factors. Thus, the objective of this study was to analyze the diversity and distribution of cyanophages within the infected cells using marker genes (psbA, nblA, and g91) in 21 Polish and Lithuanian lakes. Physicochemical factors that might be related to them were also analyzed. The results demonstrated that genetic markers representing cyanophages were observed in most lakes studied. The frequently detected gene was psbA with 88% of cyanophage-positive samples, while nblA and g91 were found in approximately 50% of lakes. The DNA sequences analyses for each gene demonstrated low variability between them. Although, the psbA sequences branched within the larger cluster of marine Synechoccocuss counterparts. The principal component analysis allowed to identify significant variation between the lakes that presented high and low cyanobacterial biomass. The lakes with high cyanobacterial biomass were further separated by country and the different diversity of cyanobacteria species, particularly Planktothrix agardhii was dominant in the Polish lakes and Planktolyngbya limnetica in the Lithuanian lakes. The total phosphorous and the presence of cyanophage genes psbA and nblA were the most important factors that allowed differentiation for the Polish lakes, while the pH and the genes g91 and nblA for the Lithuanian lakes.

Climate change and related sea-level rise pose significant threats to sandy lowland coasts, which account for approximately 30% of the global coastline. However, the role of key controlling factors responsible for the frequency and extent of extreme storm surge of inundation regime is not yet fully understood. Here, we present the longest to date, high-resolution sedimentary record of extreme storm surge flooding from the microtidal southern Baltic Sea, spanning two periods: 3.6-2.9 ka BP and 0.7 ka BP until present. Wetland sediments, including sandy event layers, were analyzed by sedimentological (grain size, loss-on-ignition, micromorphology), geochronological (14C, 210Pb, 137Cs), geochemical (XRF), mineralogical (heavy minerals) and micropaleontological (diatoms) methods. Our results revealed that both periods are characterized by high-frequency storm surge flooding in order of 1.3 – 4.2 events per century. They are correlated to widely recognized enhanced storminess periods in NW Europe and took place during both rising and fluctuating sea levels. The presented results show that the storm surge driven coastal inundation frequency and extent largely depend on the development of coastal barriers (e.g., beach ridges). Thus, in the context of the future coastal storm surge hazard, the protection of existing coastal barriers is essential.

Small waterbodies and oxbow lakes play an important role as hotspots of biodiversity and landscape diversity, supplying a range of ecosystem services. However, they are at risk of disappearing. Thus, there is a need for the threats to their existence to be recognised. In this study we aimed to determine whether land uses within small and larger areas around these waterbodies, combined with selected two abiotic factors (pH, conductivity), affect the “characteristic combination of macrophytes”, which is the main indicator of status conservation of such waterbodies. We surveyed 113 Polish oxbow lakes within the floodplains of 16 rivers. Based on ordination analysis (NMDS db-RDA) we found significant differences in the conservation status of macrophyte assemblages between waterbodies with arable land close by and those with woody and shrub vegetation; also affecting the conservation status of the aquatic plant assemblages were meadows, forests, and water pH. For larger environs the conservation status of the aquatic plant assemblages was affected by land use types (urban, mines and excavations, meadows, forests) and by water pH. Our findings prove that conservation programs of oxbow lakes, ponds and small waterbodies should be based on protection and preservation of their immediate and larger surroundings, as well.

Cyanobacterial blooms constitute a recognized danger to aquatic environment and public health not only due to presence of main group of cyanotoxins, such as microcystins, cylindrospermopsin or anatoxin-a, but also other emerging bioactivities. An innovative approach identifying such bioactivities is the application of cellular biosensors based on reporter genes which detect the impact of cyanobacterial cells and components on actual human cells in a physiological-like setting. In the present study biosensor cell lines detecting four different types of bioactivities (ARE – oxidative stress, NFKBRE – immunomodulatory pathogen-associated molecular patterns, AHRE – persistent organic pollutants, GRE – endocrine disruptors) were exposed to concentrated cyanobacterial cells from 21 environmental bloom samples and from eight cultures (Microcystis aeruginosa, Aphanizomenon flos-aquae, Planktothrix agardhii and Raphidiopsis raciborskii). The AHRE and GRE biosensors did not detect any relevant bioactivity. In turn, ARE biosensors were significantly activated by bloom samples from Jeziorsko (180–250%) and Sulejow (250–400%) reservoirs with the highest cyanobacterial biomass, while activation by cultures was weak/undetectable. The same biosensors were stimulated by microcystin-LR (250%) and anatoxin-a (150%). The NFKBRE biosensors were activated to varying extent (140–650%) by most bloom and culture samples, pointing to potential immunomodulatory toxic effects on humans. Lipopolysaccharide and lipoproteins were identified as responsible for NFKBRE activation (probably via pattern recognition receptors), while peptidoglycan had no bioactivity in this assay. Thus, the holistic approach to sample analysis with the application of cellular biosensors geared towards 4 separate pathways/bioactivities was validated for identification of novel bioactivities in organisms with recognized public health significance (e.g. this study is the first to describe cyanobacterial lipoproteins as potential environmental immunomodulators). Moreover, the ability of cellular biosensors to be activated by intact cyanobacterial cells from blooms provides proof of concept of their direct application for environmental monitoring, especially comparison of potential threats without need for chemical analysis and identification of toxicants.

Bacterioplankton community composition has become the center of research attention in recent years. Bacteria associated with toxic cyanobacteria blooms have attracted considerable interest. However, little is known about the environmental factors driving the bacteria community, including the impact of invasive cyanobacteria. Therefore, our aim has been to determine the relationships between heterotrophic bacteria and phytoplankton community composition across 24 Polish lakes with different contributions of cyanobacteria including the invasive species Raphidiopsis raciborskii. This analysis revealed that cyanobacteria were present in 16 lakes, while R. raciborskii occurred in 14 lakes. Our results show that bacteria communities differed between lakes dominated by cyanobacteria and lakes with minor contributions of cyanobacteria but did not differ between lakes with R. raciborskii and other lakes. Physical factors, including water and Secchi depth, were the major drivers of bacteria and phytoplankton community composition. However, in lakes dominated by cyanobacteria, bacterial community composition was also influenced by biotic factors such as the amount of R. raciborskii, chlorophyll-a and total phytoplankton biomass. Thus, our study provides novel evidence on the influence of environmental factors and R. raciborskii on lake bacteria communities.

Within the Baltic Sea basin, the frequency and intensity of coastal flooding caused by storms is influenced by wind direction and exposure of the coast. Strong (north)westerly winds associated with the North Atlantic Oscillation hit large parts of the Polish coast, while (north)easterly winds affect Puck Bay. Following from that, the research on the frequency and magnitude of past storminess within the Baltic Sea sheds light onto regional climatic conditions indicating changes in wind-field directions and storminess in north-western and northern Europe. Despite the fact that the Baltic Sea basin area bears potentially vast amount of information on the past storminess and climatic conditions on the regional scale, no systematic, basin-wide research on storm deposits and analysis of frequency and intensity of storminess is available. The spatially variable occurrence of sedimentary evidence for coastal flooding caused by storms indicates necessity for multisite investigations in order to develop reliable records of past storm frequency and intensity. As the historical written sources and instrumental records are insufficient to draw informative conclusion on the past storminess, the survey in search for the depositional evidence of catastrophic coastal flooding has been undertaken along the Polish coast, from the Puck Bay to Wolin Island. Following from that, detailed research on the storm deposits has been undertaken in 4 key locations (one is presented here, Mechelinki).The survey allowed to create the list of features common for the locations where sedimentary evidence for coastal flooding is preserved. These include flat, inundational character of the coast, prevailing organic deposition in lowlands close to the shore and non-tidal character of adjacent marine basin.Mechelinki peatland (Puck Bay) is separated by a N-S extending sand barrier from the open sea and exposed to (north)easterly winds. Investigated sedimentary succession comprises ca. 450 cm of peat interdigitated with few centimetres thick layers of sand. The origin of sand has been established based on multiproxy investigation including: particle size, shape (automated MorphologyG3, thin sections), diatom, XRF and heavy mineral analyses. Geochronology has been established based on 14C and 210Pb/137Cs measurements. In the Mechelinki research site, the evidence for about 20 coastal flooding events which took place during the last 5000 years has been discovered. Open access funding provided by Universite de Geneve., To determine the drivers of phytoplankton biomass, we collected standardized morphometric, physical, and biological data in 230 lakes across the Mediterranean, Continental, and Boreal climatic zones of the European continent. Multilinear regression models tested on this snapshot of mostly eutrophic lakes (median total phosphorus [TP] = 0.06 and total nitrogen [TN] = 0.7 mg L-1), and its subsets (2 depth types and 3 climatic zones), show that light climate and stratification strength were the most significant explanatory variables for chlorophyll a (Chl a) variance. TN was a significant predictor for phytoplankton biomass for shallow and continental lakes, while TP never appeared as an explanatory variable, suggesting that under high TP, light, which partially controls stratification strength, becomes limiting for phytoplankton development. Mediterranean lakes were the warmest yet most weakly stratified and had significantly less Chl a than Boreal lakes, where the temperature anomaly from the long-term average, during a summer heatwave was the highest (+4 degrees C) and showed a significant, exponential relationship with stratification strength. Well-studied thermal spring microbial mat systems continue to serve as excellent models from which to make discoveries of general importance to microbial community ecology in order to address comprehensively the question of "who is there" in a microbial community. Cyanobacteria are highly adaptable and an integral part of many ecosystems including thermal springs. In this context, we sampled disparate thermal springs, spanning from Iceland and Poland to Greece and Tajikistan. Thirteen (13) strains were isolated and characterised with taxonomic indices and molecular markers (16S-23S rRNA region and cpcBA gene), whilst their thermotolerance was evaluated. Screening for the presence of genes encoding three heat shock proteins, as well as non-ribosomal peptide synthetases (NRPSs) and polyketide synthases (PKSs) was performed. This approach resulted in the description of two new genera (Hillbrichtia and Amphirytos) and their type species (Hillbrichtia pamiria and Amphirytos necridicus) representing Oscillatoriales and Synechococcales orders, respectively. We also found unique lineages inside the genus Thermoleptolyngbya, describing a novel species (T. hindakiae). We described the presence of sub-cosmopolitan taxa (such as Calothrix, Desertifilum, and Trichormus). Strains were diverse concerning their thermophilic ability with the strains well adapted to high temperatures possessing all three investigated genes encoding heat shock proteins as well as studied PKS and NRPS genes. In this work, we show novel cyanobacteria diversity from thermal springs from disparate environments, possible correlation of thermotolerance and their genetic background, which may have implications on strategic focusing of screening programs on underexploited taxa in these habitats.

International audience; Niche conservatism (NC) describes the scenario in which species retain similar characteristics or traits over time and space, and thus has potentially important implications for understanding their biogeographic distributions. Evidence consistent with NC includes similar niche properties across geographically distant regions. We investigated whether NC was evident in stream diatom morphospecies by modeling species responses to environmental and climatic variables in a set of calibration sites (from the US) and then evaluated the models with test sets (from France, Finland, New Zealand, Antilles and La Réunion). We also examined whether diatom species showed congruency in environmental niche optima and niche breadths between the study regions, and whether species occupancy and functional traits influenced the observed patterns. We used boosted regression tree models with local environmental variables and climatic variables as predictors. We detected low NC in both environmental and climate models and a lack of consistent differences in NC between widely distributed and regionally rare species and among functional groups. For all species, diatom environmental and climatic optima varied clearly between the regions but showed some positive relationships especially for pH and total phosphorus. Diatom niche breadths were only weakly correlated between the US and the other regions. We demonstrated that diatoms showed overall relatively little NC globally, and NC was especially low for climatic variables. Collectively, these findings suggest that there may exist locally adapted lineages within the diatom morphospecies or diatoms possess some adaptation potential for differences in temperature. We argue that in diatoms, environmental and especially climate models may not be transferrable in space globally but need regional diatom data for calibration because species niches seem to differ among geographical regions.

Winter cyanobacterial blooms have become increasingly common in eutrophic lakes advocating a need for their monitoring and risk assessment. The present study evaluated the toxicity of a winter cyanobacterial bloom in a eutrophicated freshwater lake located in Western Poland. The bloom was dominated by potentially toxic species: Planktothrix agardhii, Limnothrix redekei, and Aphanizomenon gracile. The toxin analysis revealed the presence of demethylated forms of microcystin-RR and microcystin-LR in ranges of 24.6-28.7 and 6.6-7.6 µg/L, respectively. The toxicity of sampled water was further evaluated in platelet-rich plasma isolated from healthy human subjects using lipid peroxidation and lactate dehydrogenase assays. No significant adverse effects were observed. The present study demonstrates that toxicity of some winter cyanobacterial blooms in the temperate zone, like that in Lubosińskie Lake, may not exhibit significant health risks despite microcystin production.

The occurrence of cyanobacteria in freshwaters attracts much attention due to its associated health threats and ecological implications. Yet data on the composition of cyanobacteria taxa and toxigenicity in some regions is still scarce. Here, we explored the occurrence of cyanobacteria and cyanotoxins in three locations in Ukraine (reservoir for Kasperivtsi Hydrothermal Power Plant and outflowing River Seret, and cooling pond of Khmelnytsky Atomic Power Plant) in summer 2017. Cyanobacteria were a dominant fraction at all stations. A number of potent-toxin producers were identified including Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii, Aphanizomenon gracile, Dolichospermum flos-aquae, and Planktothrix agardhii. Screening for the presence of dissolved and particulate content of microcystins (-LR, -YR, and -RR), cylindrospermopsin, and anatoxin-a yielded negative results. The studied waters displayed no toxicity in human platelets in vitro. Further toxicological and ecological studies are necessary to evaluate the potential presence of cyanotoxin producers in Ukraine.

The basis of biological remediation basically refers to environmentally friendly methods of extracting various xenobiotics, including heavy metals, from the wastewater of various industrial facilities, using the biochemical capabilities of naturally occurring organisms or their metabolites. In this regard, the assessment of the contribution of microalgae to the transformation of heavy metal compounds and the detoxification of the natural environment is very important and necessary. This paper presents an investigation of the effect of different concentrations of cadmium Cd2+ and chromium Cr2O72− ions on the survival and ultrastructure of microalgae cells of Parachlorella kessleri Bh-2 and its ability to accumulate these metals in order to determine its bioremediational potential against these metals. It was determined that the culture of Parachlorella kessleri Bh-2 is resistant to concentrations of cadmium (0.3 mg l−1) and chromium (30 mg l−1) ions. It was found that heavy metals in these concentrations are actively transported through the cell membrane and accumulate in the cytoplasm of cells, causing an increase in the number of vacuoles with electron-dense deposits, granulation of the cytoplasm and an increase in the number of starch grains in the microalgae cells. Analysis of the content of total polysaccharides showed a noticeable increase in the concentration of polysaccharides by of exposure to concentrations of Cd (II) - 0,3 mg l−1 and Cr (VI) - 30 mg l−1.

Aphanizomenon gracile and Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii are extensively studied Nostocales of wide geographical distribution and have potential to produce toxins. However, a number of knowledge gaps regarding their toxicity and related health risks in certain locations, including Europe, exists. The present study applied a polyphasic approach to screen the toxicity of different strains of C. raciborskii (LBY-Cr, LBO-Cr and LKM-Cr) and A. gracile (LBY-Ag, LBN-Ag and LWI-Ag) isolated from five freshwater lakes of Western Poland. The following investigations were carried out: (i) in vitro toxicological studies employing human cells isolated from healthy donors; (ii) analytical screening for the presence of cylindrospermopsin (CYN), guanidinoacetate (GAA; initial CYN precursor and postulated general cyanobacterial metabolite), three microcystin (MC) analogues, β- N -methylamino- l -alanine (BMAA) and its isomer α-γ,-diaminobutyric acid (DAB), anatoxin-a (ATX) and ten saxitoxin (STX) analogues; and (iii) molecular studies of genes involved in CYN, GAA, MCs and ATX biosynthesis. Extracts of C. raciborskii LBY-Cr and A. gracile LBN-Ag caused a significant increase in the intracellular reactive oxygen content in human neutrophils during short-term (1 h) exposure and also led to lipid peroxidation and cell death. No cytotoxic effects were noted for the other tested strains. None of the toxin genes ( cyrA , cyrJ , anaF and mcyE ) and toxins (CYN, GAA, MCs, BMAA, ATX and STX) were detected. The only exception was DAB found at a concentration below 1.0 μg g − 1 dw in A. gracile LWI-Ag. It is the first time that cyanobacterial DAB producer has been identified in the Central European region. The study points to the production of as yet unknown metabolite(s) that may pose a relevant threat to human health through strains of C. raciborskii and A. gracile isolated from two Polish lakes, and adds to the general understanding of the toxicity of European strains of both species.

Harmful cyanobacteria and their toxic metabolites constitute a big challenge for the production of safe drinking water. Microcystins (MC), chemically stable hepatotoxic heptapeptides, have often been involved in cyanobacterial poisoning incidents. A desirable solution for cyanobacterial management in lakes and ponds would eliminate both excess cyanobacteria and the MC that they potentially produce and release upon lysis. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) has recently been advocated as an efficient means of lysing cyanobacteria in lakes and ponds, however H2O2 (at least when used at typical concentrations) cannot degrade MC in environmental waters. Therefore, mesocosm experiments combining the cyanobacteria-lysing effect of H2O2 and the MC-degrading capacity of the enzyme MlrA were set up in the highly eutrophic Lake Ludo&scaron, (Serbia). The H2O2 treatment decreased the abundance of the dominant cyanobacterial taxa Limnothrix sp., Aphanizomenon flos-aquae, and Planktothrix agardhii. The intracellular concentration of MC was reduced/eliminated by H2O2, yet the reduction of the extracellular MC could only be accomplished by supplementation with MlrA. However, as H2O2 was found to induce the expression of mcyB and mcyE genes, which are involved in MC biosynthesis, the use of H2O2 as a safe cyanobacteriocide still requires further investigation. In conclusion, the experiments showed that the combined use of H2O2 and MlrA is promising in the elimination of both excess cyanobacteria and their MC in environmental waters.

Microcystins produced by several toxic cyanobacterial strains constitute an important problem for public health. Bacterial degradation of these hepatotoxins may play an important role in natural ecosystems, however the nature of the process is very poorly understood. The aim of our study was to investigate the possible interactions between cyanotoxin producers and degraders. Samples collected from 24 water bodies in western Poland were analysed to determine the chemo-physical parameters, phytoplankton content, bacterial community structure and microcystin-biodegradation potency. A redundancy analysis identified a positive correlation between the capacity of a community to degrade microcystin LR (MC-LR) and temperature, pH, chlorophyll a concentration and the abundance of MC-producers. The relative abundance of classes F38, TM7-3 and the order WCHB1-81c (Actinobacteria) was significantly higher in the lakes with MC-biodegradation potency. Some specific bacterial genera belonging to Acidobacteria, Chloroflexi, Gemmatimonadetes, Firmicutes and TM7 were closely correlated with the occurrence of Microcystis spp. Furthermore, the MC biodegradation process was connected with the same bacterial groups. Thus, our approach allowed us to provide a broader picture of some specific relations between microcystin producers and potential microcystin degraders. A more comprehensive analysis of the existing correlations may be helpful in our understanding of natural mechanisms of MC elimination using bacteria such as MC-degraders.

Previous studies indicated that teratogenic polymethoxy-1-alkenes (PMAs) are produced by phylogenetically diverse cyanobacteria taxa, however corresponding studies on the occurrence of PMAs in European cyanobacteria are lacking. Herein, the presence of PMAs in strains of Raphidiopsis raciborskii and Aphanizomenon gracile isolated from surface waters in Poland was studied using nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectrometry. No PMAs were detected in any of the strains investigated, indicating that production of these compounds may be geographically diversified. Further studies are necessary to elucidate mechanisms of cyanobacterial PMAs synthesis.

Palaeotsunami deposits are the primary sources of information on past large tsunami events and thereby are critical for earthquake and tsunami hazard assessments. They usually form sandy layers preserved in coastal sediments and contain indicators of marine origins, such as microfossils (e.g., diatoms and foraminifera) and geochemical signals of saltwater. However, these indicators are often modified or erased with time. To address this issue, we present the first application of a palaeogenetic approach to a series of up to approximately 2000-year-old sandy palaeotsunami deposits from a coastal wetland on Hokkaido Island (Japan). We found the DNA of marine foraminiferal species preserved in palaeotsunami deposits, in the absence of foraminifera tests. The recovery and analysis of the ancient sedimentary DNA of marine organisms preserved in coastal zone sediments for millennia represents a new and promising tool for the identification of past tsunamis.

As yet European strains of Raphidiopsis raciborskii (previously Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii) have not been found to produce known cyanotoxins although their extracts have caused adverse effects in mammals, as shown using in vitro and in vivo experimental models. The present study investigated whether R. raciborskii isolated from Western Poland and Ukraine can affect fish cells using in vitro exposures of hepatocytes and red blood cells (RBC), and brain homogenates obtained from common carp (Cyprinus carpio) to 1.0% and 0.1% extracts of 7 strains. The studied extracts evoked different responses of catalase activity in hepatocytes with both increase and decrease observed under low and high concentrations. The cellular thiol pool was also altered with most extracts inducing a decrease in the activity of glutathione-S-transferase, and Ukrainian strains leading to an increase in glutathione level and a decrease in metallothionein content. All the studied extracts induced comparable reactive oxygen species formation, lipid peroxidation, protein carbonylation and DNA fragmentation in hepatocytes, and all but one increased the activity of caspase-3. Only one extract caused lysosomal membrane destabilization as measured by neutral red retention in RBC. In contrast to extracts of Ukrainian isolates, exposure of brain homogenates to extracts of Polish strains induced an increase in acetylcholinesterase activity suggesting the neurotoxic action of their exudates. The results indicate that both Polish and Ukrainian strains of R. raciborskii may pose a toxicological risk to freshwater fish, and further, that Polish strains may produce compound(s) evoking neurotoxic effects.

Cyanobacterial blooms are an increasing threat worldwide. Invasions of certain cyanobacterial species, mainly towards higher latitudes, add to this concern as they enrich the pool of potential bloom-formers in the invaded region. Among the numerous causes of this escalating process, climate warming is commonly considered the most crucial factor, but empirical studies of this issue are lacking. The aim of our study was to identify physical, chemical and biological factors related to the occurrence of an invasive cyanobacterium at the northern border of its putative current range, and thus enabling its expansion. This study focuses on the relatively little studied species Sphaerospermopsis aphanizomenoides (Nostocales, Cyanobacteria; synonyms: Aphanizomenon aphanizomenoides, Anabaena aphanizomenoides), which is predicted to become one of the main nuisance species of the future. Forty-nine freshwater lakes located between latitudes 51° and 55°N were examined for the presence of S. aphanizomenoides, and environmental factors that could drive its occurrence were studied simultaneously. To identify factors correlated with the presence of the species, principal component analysis (PCA) and Mann-Whitney U test were performed. Water temperature did not differentiate lakes with or without S. aphanizomenoides, however the study was conducted in a particularly hot summer. Total phosphorus concentration was identified as the primary driving factor of the occurrence of S. aphanizomenoides. The species grew in poor light conditions and high phytoplankton biomass, mainly in shallow lakes. As shown by detrended correspondence analysis (DCA), the species accompanied shade tolerant, eutrophic species of native and invasive cyanobacteria as well as eukaryotic algae. Our results indicate that eutrophication may be the primary factor enabling the increasing occurrence of S. aphanizomenoides in temperate environments, and suggest that this process may stimulate expansion of cyanobacterial species towards high latitudes.

Insight into how environmental change determines the production and distribution of cyanobacterial toxins is necessary for risk assessment. Management guidelines currently focus on hepatotoxins (microcystins). Increasing attention is given to other classes, such as neurotoxins (e.g., anatoxin-a) and cytotoxins (e.g., cylindrospermopsin) due to their potency. Most studies examine the relationship between individual toxin variants and environmental factors, such as nutrients, temperature and light. In summer 2015, we collected samples across Europe to investigate the effect of nutrient and temperature gradients on the variability of toxin production at a continental scale. Direct and indirect effects of temperature were the main drivers of the spatial distribution in the toxins produced by the cyanobacterial community, the toxin concentrations and toxin quota. Generalized linear models showed that a Toxin Diversity Index (TDI) increased with latitude, while it decreased with water stability. Increases in TDI were explained through a significant increase in toxin variants such as MC-YR, anatoxin and cylindrospermopsin, accompanied by a decreasing presence of MC-LR. While global warming continues, the direct and indirect effects of increased lake temperatures will drive changes in the distribution of cyanobacterial toxins in Europe, potentially promoting selection of a few highly toxic species or strains. © 2018 by the authors. Under ongoing climate change and increasing anthropogenic activity, which continuously challenge ecosystem resilience, an in-depth understanding of ecological processes is urgently needed. Lakes, as providers of numerous ecosystem services, face multiple stressors that threaten their functioning. Harmful cyanobacterial blooms are a persistent problem resulting from nutrient pollution and climate-change induced stressors, like poor transparency, increased water temperature and enhanced stratification. Consistency in data collection and analysis methods is necessary to achieve fully comparable datasets and for statistical validity, avoiding issues linked to disparate data sources. The European Multi Lake Survey (EMLS) in summer 2015 was an initiative among scientists from 27 countries to collect and analyse lake physical, chemical and biological variables in a fully standardized manner. This database includes in-situ lake variables along with nutrient, pigment and cyanotoxin data of 369 lakes in Europe, which were centrally analysed in dedicated laboratories. Tsunami events may have an enormous impact on the functioning of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems by altering various relationships with biotic components. Concentrations of acid-leachable fractions of heavy metals and metalloids in soils and plant samples from areas affected by the December 2004 tsunami in Thailand were determined. Ipomoea pes-caprae, a common plant species growing along the seashore of this region, and frequently used in folk medicine, was selected to assess the presence of selected elements. Elevated amounts of Cd, Pb, Zn, and As in soil samples, and Pb, Zn, As, Se, Cr, and Ni in plant samples were determined from the tsunami-impacted regions for comparison with reference locations. The flowers of Ipomoea pes-caprae contained the highest amounts of these metals, followed by its leaves, and stems. In addition, its bioaccumulation factor (BAF) supports this capability of high metal uptake by Ipomoea pes-caprae from the areas affected by the tsunami in comparison with a reference site. This uptake was followed by the translocation of these elements to the various plant components. The presence of these toxic metals in Ipomoea pes-caprae growing in contaminated soils should be a concern of those who use this plant for medicinal purposes. Further studies on the content of heavy metals and metalloids in this plant in relation to human health concerns are recommended.

Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii which belongs to the order of Nostocales has continuously been at the centre of interest of various research groups owing to its great ecological plasticity, wide distribution and potential to produce different metabolites known to be harmful for humans and animals. Over recent decades, Polish strains of C. raciborskii have also been studied with regard to these issues. The present paper is a brief review of the present state of knowledge respecting the occurrence and toxicity of this species with emphasis on Polish strains, and indicates potential directions for future research.

In central and southern Europe, Aphanizomenon spp., A. gracile Lemmermann in particular, have been associated with paralytic shellfish toxin (PST) production. In western Poland, A. gracile is very common, and Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii (Woloszyńska) Seenayya & Subba Raju, another potentially PST-producing species, is often found as well. To date it is, however, unknown if the cyanobacterial populations in this area harbour the genetic capability to produce PSTs, and to what extent toxin biosynthesis occurs. The objective of this study was to survey the prevalence of potentially PST-producing cyanobacteria by measuring paralytic shellfish toxin biosynthesis gene sxtB copy numbers, sxtA, sxtG and sxtS gene presence, and PST concentrations in Polish freshwater lakes. In total, 34 lakes in western Poland were sampled twice during summer 2010. The presence of PST biosynthesis genes sxtA, sxtG and sxtS was determined using conventional qualitative PCR. Quantitative PCR (qPCR) was used to measure sxtB copy numbers, and the samples were analysed for PSTs using ion-pair high performance liquid chromatography with post-column oxidation and fluorescence detection (HPLC-FLD). Cyanobacteria carrying the sxtB gene were present in 23.5% of all samples (n=16) and in 14 lakes of the studied 34. Gene copy numbers ranged from 8.2×104 to 5.1×107 sxtB copies L-1 (mean 3.8×106). The median was 4.5×105 sxtB gene copies L-1 and the majority of results clustered at the lower end of the sxtB qPCR linear range. In 12 out of the 16 samples positive for sxtB the gene co-occurred with the other three targeted PST biosynthesis genes sxtA, sxtG and sxtS. However, five additional samples lacked one or two of the targeted four genes. Thirteen samples contained PSTs, of which 12 samples at levels -1, i.e., close to or below the quantitative detection limit of the HPLC-FLD method (0.01 µg L-1). One sample contained 0.57 µg L-1 saxitoxin, co-occurring with all four sxt genes studied. No correlation between PST and sxt gene occurrence or copy numbers was observed. A. gracile and C. raciborskii occurred in 92% and 50% of samples, respectively, containing PSTs, sxt genes or both. In conclusion, the results confirm that potential PST producers constitute an established subpopulation of cyanobacteria in Polish freshwater lakes. However, none of the sxt genes targeted in this study could serve as a reliable marker for active PST biosynthesis.

Mechanisms behind expansion of an invasive cyanobacterium Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii have not been fully resolved, and different hypotheses, such as global warming, are suggested. In the East-Central Europe, it is widely occurring in western part of Poland but only in single locations in the East due to some limiting factors. Therefore, broad-scale phytoplankton survey including 117 randomly selected lakes in Poland and Lithuania was conducted. The results showed that C. raciborskii occurred widely in western part of Poland but was absent from other regions and Lithuania except one lake. The regions in which C. raciborskii was present had higher annual mean air temperature, higher maximum air temperature of the warmest month and higher minimum temperature of the coldest month, demonstrating that average air temperature, and indirectly, the duration of growing season might be more important factor driving C. raciborskii distribution than measured in situ water temperature. In turn, the presence of C. raciborskii in single localities may be more related to physiological adaptations of separated ecotype. Collectively, these results provide novel evidence on the influence of temperature on C. raciborskii distribution in East-European regions but also indicate high ecological plasticity of this species.

The biological role of cyanobacteria secondary metabolites is relatively unknown although several possible hypotheses have been discussed. In the following study the effect of cylindrospermopsin (CYN) and metabolites of non-CYN producing Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii strain on growth, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity and microcystin-LR (MC-LR) production in Microcystis aeruginosa was evaluated. Higher concentrations of CYN (10 and 50 μg L−1) induced toxicity effects demonstrated by significant growth inhibition and M. aeruginosa cell necrosis. Lower concentrations of CYN (1 and 5 μg L−1) slightly decreased growth rates but significantly up-regulated ALP activity. Moreover, under all studied CYN concentrations MC-LR production strongly decreased. Spent C. raciborskii medium mimicked the CYN action by inducing strong inhibition of M. aeruginosa growth and MC-LR production and through up-regulation of ALP activity. On the other hand, spent M. aeruginosa medium did not affect C. raciborskii growth and no alterations in ALP activity were observed. Co-culturing of these two species resulted in an increase of C. raciborskii contribution at the expense of M. aeruginosa. From the results we conclude that CYN can be involved in interspecific competition in cyanobacteria and that non-CYN producing C. raciborskii strains may produce a hitherto unknown bioactive compound(s) which can mimic CYN action.

International audience; This review aims to summarise the outcomes of some recent European research concerning toxic cyanobacteria and cyanotoxins, with an emphasis on developments within the framework of the CYANOCOST Action (COST Action ES1105, Cyanobacterial Blooms and Toxins in Water Resources: Occurrence, Impacts and Management). State of the art research and management capabilities in Europe on cyanobacteria have benefitted from input from the pure and applied life sciences, the human and animal health sectors, water engineers, economists and planners. Many of these professional groups have been brought together and they interacted favourably within the framework of CYANOCOST. Highlights of the Action include phycological and ecological studies, development of advanced techniques for cyanotoxin analysis, elucidation of cyanotoxin modes of action, management techniques to reduce cyanobacterial mass development, and research on methods and practices for cyanotoxin removal during drinking water treatment. The CYANOCOST Action has had an active outreach policy throughout its lifetime, resulting in e.g. three handbooks, two special issues in scientific journals and activities in the social media. The many contact channels to end-users, including environmental and drinking water supply authorities, health professionals and the general public are described in this review. Furthermore, the authors have identified a number of gaps in knowledge. Proposed directions for future research in the field of toxic cyanobacteria and cyanotoxins are also discussed

Toxic cyanobacterial blooms in freshwaters are thought to be a consequence of the combined effects of anthropogenic eutrophication and climate change. It is expected that climate change will affect water mixing regimes that alter the water transparency and ultimately the light environment for phytoplankton. Blooms of the potentially toxic cyanobacterium Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii are expanding from tropical towards temperate regions. Several hypotheses have been proposed to explain this expansion, including an increase in water temperature due to climate change and the high phenotypic plasticity of the species that allows it to exploit different light environments. We performed an analysis based on eight lakes in tropical, subtropical and temperate regions to examine the distribution and abundance of C. raciborskii in relation to water temperature and transparency. We then conducted a series of short-term factorial experiments that combined three temperatures and two light intensity levels using C. raciborskii cultures alone and in interaction with another cyanobacterium to identify its growth capacity. Our results from the field, in contrast to predictions, showed no differences in dominance (>40% to the total biovolume) of C. raciborskii between climate regions. C. raciborskii was able to dominate the phytoplankton in a wide range of light environments (euphotic zone = 1.5 to 5 m, euphotic zone/mixing zone ratio 1.5). Moreover, C. raciborskii was capable of dominating the phytoplankton at low temperatures (C. raciborskii growing in interaction was enhanced by the increase of the temperature and light intensity. C. raciborskii growth in high light intensities and at a wide range of temperatures, suggests that any advantage that this species may derive from climate change that favors its dominance in the phytoplankton is likely due to changes in the light environment rather than changes in temperature. Predictive models that consider only temperature as a drive factor can therefore fail in predicting the expansion of this potentially toxic cyanobacterium.

The 11th March 2011 Tohoku-oki tsunami inundated the low-lying Sendai Plain (Japan) more than 5 km inland leaving sand and mud deposits over most of the area. In order to establish the sources of the tsunami deposits and interpret processes of their sedimentation, samples were collected from the deposits, underlying soils and the beach along a shore-perpendicular transect and analysed for grain size, diatom assemblages and nannoliths. The fining-inland tsunami deposits consisted of poorly to moderately sorted medium to coarse sand within 2 km of the coastline and very poorly to poorly sorted mud farther inland. More specifically, there was a slight fining of the coarse to medium sand mode within the sandy deposits and an increased contribution of the coarse and very coarse silt fraction in the mud deposits. The tsunami deposits also exhibited vertical changes including fining upward and coupled coarsening-fining upward trends. Few diatoms were present in beach sediments, soils and tsunami deposits within 1 km of the coastline, while diatoms were more abundant farther inland. Diatom assemblages in the soil and tsunami deposits were similar and dominated by species typical of freshwater-brackish habitats, while no typically marine species were encountered. Nannoliths were generally absent in the studied sediments, except for few specimens. Our data indicate that there was probably no or only a very minor component of marine sediments transported onland by the tsunami. The sandy tsunami deposits within ~ 1 km of the coastline were mostly derived from beach and dune erosion. From 1 to 2 km landward the contribution of these sources decreased, while sources comprising local soil erosion and the entrainment of sediments from the Teizan-bori canal increased. Farther inland, local soil erosion was the major sediment source for the mud deposits. The tsunami deposits were most likely deposited during at least two inundations, mostly out from suspension resulting in an upward grain size fining trend. However, bed load deposition was also important in the sandy deposits as suggested by a common grain size upward coarsening, position on C–M diagrams and frequent horizontal lamination. The present study reveals that even very large tsunamis may not transport marine sediments onland and thus many commonly applied indicators of tsunami deposits based on the assumption of their offshore origin (marine diatoms, foraminifera, nannoliths, marine sediments) may be of limited use.

Cylindrospermopsin (CYN) is a secondary metabolite produced by several cyanobacteria species. Its potential effect on human health includes liver, kidneys, lungs, spleen and intestine injuries. CYN can be cyto- and genotoxic to a variety of cell types. Occurrence and expansion of species able to synthesize CYN in European water bodies has been recently reported and raised awareness of potential harm to human health. Therefore, surface water of different human use should be monitored for the presence of toxic species of blue-green algae. This paper aims to describe the distribution of CYN producers in Europe and the potential effects of the toxin on human health according to the current state of knowledge.

Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii has recently attracted wide attention owing to its toxigenicity and its capacity for rapid invasion of new geographical regions. We studied the spatial distribution of C. raciborskii in western Poland and the environmental variables related to its occurrence near the border of its current temperate geographical range. We also identified the typical phytoplankton assemblages in which C. raciborskii occurs. Forty-six lakes were sampled once during the summers of 2008 and 2009. C. raciborskii was present in 43% of the samples and its biomass accounted for 0.1–13.9% of the total phytoplankton biomass found in the lakes. A General Linear Model (GLM) analysis and t-tests showed that the lakes in which C. raciborskii occurred were significantly shallower, more turbid and more eutrophic than the lakes from which it was absent. We present an organic geochemical study of surface sediments of Lake Sarbsko, a shallow coastal lake on the middle Polish Baltic coast. The aim was to provide evidence concerning the origin of the organic matter (OM) and its compositional diversity in surface deposits of this very productive, highly dynamic water body. The content and composition of the OM in the bottom sediments were investigated at 11 sampling stations throughout the lake basin. OM sources were assigned on the basis of bulk indicators [total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), δ 13 C TOC and δ 15 N and extractable OM yield], biomarker composition of extractable OM and compound-specific C isotope signatures. The source characterization of autochthonous compounds was verified via phytoplankton analysis. The distribution of gaseous hydrocarbons in the sediments, as well as temporal changes in lake water pH, the concentration of DIC (dissolved inorganic carbon) and δ 13 C DIC were used to trace OM decomposition. The sedimentary OM is composed mainly of well preserved phytoplankton compounds and shows minor spatial variability in composition. However, the presence of CH 4 and CO 2 in the bottom deposits provides evidence for microbial degradation of sedimentary OM. The transformation of organic compounds in surface, bottom and pore waters via oxidative processes influences carbonate equilibrium in the lake and seasonally favours precipitation or dissolution of CaCO 3 . The data enhance our understanding of the relationships between the composition of sedimentary OM and environmental conditions within coastal ecosystems and shed light on the reliability of OM proxies for environmental reconstruction of coastal lakes.

Eutrophication of freshwater lakes has led to blooms formed by cyanobacteria often associated with toxins harmful to livestock and humans. Environmental conditions that favor toxin production during cyanobacterial blooms are, however, not well understood. Moreover, the ability to use cyanobacteria quantity to assess the level of threat associated with toxin production is a topic of discussion. The purpose for this study was to examine Planktothrix agardhii dynamics in a shallow, temperate hypertrophic lake and to determine the factors that affect microcystin production. In addition, the relationship between P. agardhii morphology and microcystin production was examined. The study spanned 2 years, and we documented a perennial P. agardhii bloom that contributed up to 99% of the total biomass. Intracellular microcystins were primarily detected throughout the study, with the highest concentration in October. Microcystin concentra- tions ranged from 3.4 to 71.2 mg.L x1 , and they had a strong, positive correlation with P. agardhii biomass. In contrast, the levels of weight-specific microcystin were relatively stable throughout the entire study, ranging from 0.23 to 1.18 mg.mg x1 . We also found that environmental factors, such as water temperature, phosphate level, ammonium nitrogen and transparency, were the most related to microcystin production. Furthermore, a significant relationship between filament morphology and toxin concentration suggested that there were differ- ent morphotypes within the toxic and non-toxic populations of P. agardhii. Our study showed that P. agardhii biomass and filament morphology may be useful characteristics for the identification of threats associated with cyanotoxins.

Biological invasions have attracted particular attention since they often result in serious consequences for natural ecosystems. One planktonic invasive species is Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii, a cyanobacterium originally reported to occur exclusively in the tropics. Over the last few decades its range has extended to temperate regions and it occupies shallow highly eutrophic lakes previously dominated by other cyanobacteria. The purpose of this study was to examine the ecology of C. raciborskii during Planktothrix agardhii blooms in two shallow lakes in western Poland and to determine whether these species have different environmental preferences. The aim of this study was to analyze and compare the relationship between environmental factors (temperature; pH; total phosphorus - TP and nitrogen - TN and their ratio) and occurrence of microcystin producing cyanobacteria in two shallow, eutrophic Polish water bodies, Sulejow Reservoir (Central Poland) and Bninskie Lake (Western Poland). Samples for analyses were collected from June till October 2005. Cyanobacteria Microcystis aeruginosa and Planktothrix agardhii , responsible for microcystins production, were detected respectively for Sulejow Reservoir and Bninskie Lake. Molecular analysis of the mcyE gene, indicated the presence of toxigenic strains of cyanobacteria in both water bodies throughout the whole sampling period. The highest extracellular microcystins toxicity established by PPIA was 2.83 μg dm −3 and 2.19 μg dm −3 in samples dominated by M. aeruginosa and P. agardhii respectively. Two different environmental factors in studied water bodies were crucial in occurrence of hepatotoxic cyanobacteria.
