We revisit the theory of Cherenkov radiation in uniaxial crystals. Historically, a number of flawed attempts have been made at explaining this radiation phenomenon and a consistent error-free description is nowhere available. We apply our calculation to a large modern day telescope - IceCube. Being located at the Antarctica, this detector makes use of the naturally occuring ice as a medium to generate Cherenkov radiation. However, due to the high pressure at the depth of the detector site, large volumes of hexagonal ice crystals are formed. We calculate how this affects the Cherenkov radiation yield and angular dependence. We conclude that the effect is small, at most about a percent, and would only be relevant in future high precision instruments like e.g. Precision IceCube Next Generation Upgrade (PINGU). For radio-Cherenkov experiments which use the presence of a clear Cherenkov cone to determine the arrival direction, any variation in emission angle will directly and linearly translate into a change in apparent neutrino direction. In closing, we also describe a simple experiment to test this formalism, and calculate the impact of anisotropy on light-yields from lead tungstate crystals as used, for example, in the CMS calorimeter at the CERN LHC.

- Abstract
This article discusses results from an international contest, open for university student teams (bachelor and master), involving the design, construction, and testing of small wind turbines in a large wind tunnel. The wind tunnel has an outlet of 2.85 x 2.85 m allowing a maximum rotor swept area of 2 m2 without significant tunnel effects. Both horizontal and vertical axis wind turbines are part of the competition. The turbines are evaluated by an external jury of industry experts based on criteria such as Annual Energy Production, cut-in wind speed, innovations, design, and sustainability. Although the contest has been initiated in 2013 with an educational focus, it has also evolved into a valuable database for scientific purposes by providing a decade worth of performance measurements for roughly 9-10 various turbine concepts each year. The collected data may serve as a unique validation resource for assessing the accuracy of design codes in modelling diverse turbine concepts thanks to detailed design reports with model descriptions accompanying each turbine (such turbine descriptions are often considered confidential for field measurements). The paper aims to explore the scientific value of this database by comparing calculations with measurements, offering explanations where possible, and reporting intriguing findings on unconventional concepts’ performance. Even though not all observations could be explained fully they provide food for thought. Recommendations are provided for both students to enhance their designs and for contest organizers to elevate the scientific value of the measurements in future contests.

Nuclear Theory - Abstract
In this paper, we provide a procedure to calculate the bremsstrahlung spectrum for virtually any relativistic bare ion with charge 6$e$ or beyond, $Z\ge 6$, in ultraperipheral collisions with target nuclei. We apply the Weizs\"{a}cker-Williams method of virtual quanta to model the effect of the distribution of nuclear constituents on the interaction of the ion with the radiation target. This leads to a bremsstrahlung spectrum peaking at $2\gamma$ times the energy of the giant dipole resonance ($\gamma$ is the projectile energy in units of its rest energy). A central ingredient in the calculation is the cross section for elastic scattering of photons on the ion. This is only available in the literature for a few selected nuclei and, usually, only in a rather restricted parameter range. Hence we develop a procedure applicable for all $Z\geq6$ to estimate the elastic scattering. The elastic cross section is obtained at low to moderate photon energies, somewhat beyond the giant dipole resonance, by means of the optical theorem, a dispersion relation, and data on the total absorption cross section. The cross section is continued at higher energies by invoking depletion due to loss of coherence in the scattering. Our procedure is intended for any ion where absorption data is available and for moderate to high energies, $\gamma \gtrsim 10$.

We outline the opportunities to study the production of the Standard Model bosons, $W^\pm$, $Z^0$ and $H^0$ at "low" energies at fixed-target experiments based at possible future ultra-high-energy proton colliders, \ie\ the High-Energy LHC, the Super proton-proton Collider and the Future Circular Collider -- hadron-hadron. These can be indeed made in conjunction with the proposed future colliders designed to reach up to $\sqrt{s}=100$ TeV by using bent crystals to extract part of the halo of the beam which would then impinge on a fixed target. Without disturbing the collider operation, this technique allows for the extraction of a substantial amount of particles in addition to serve for a beam-cleaning purpose. With this method, high-luminosity fixed-target studies at centre-of-mass energies above the $W^\pm$, $Z^0$ and $H^0$ masses, $\sqrt{s} \simeq 170-300$ GeV, are possible. We also discuss the possibility offered by an internal gas target, which can also be used as luminosity monitor by studying the beam transverse shape.

Nuclear Experiment ,High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
We report on the studies of Transverse-Momentum-Dependent distributions (TMDs) at a future fixed-target experiment --AFTER@LHC-- using the $p^+$ or Pb ion LHC beams, which would be the most energetic fixed-target experiment ever performed. AFTER@LHC opens new domains of particle and nuclear physics by complementing collider-mode experiments, in particular those of RHIC and the EIC projects. Both with an extracted beam by a bent crystal or with an internal gas target, the luminosity achieved by AFTER@LHC surpasses that of RHIC by up to 3 orders of magnitude. With an unpolarised target, it allows for measurements of TMDs such as the Boer-Mulders quark distributions and the distribution of unpolarised and linearly polarised gluons in unpolarised protons. Using polarised targets, one can access the quark and gluon Sivers TMDs through single transverse-spin asymmetries in Drell-Yan and quarkonium production. In terms of kinematics, the fixed-target mode combined with a detector covering $\eta_{\rm lab} \in [1,5]$ allows one to measure these asymmetries at large $x^\uparrow$ in the polarised nucleon., Comment: Symposium SPIN2014, Beijing

We report on the opportunities for spin physics and Transverse-Momentum Dependent distribution (TMD) studies at a future multi-purpose fixed-target experiment using the proton or lead ion LHC beams extracted by a bent crystal. The LHC multi-TeV beams allow for the most energetic fixed-target experiments ever performed, opening new domains of particle and nuclear physics and complementing that of collider physics, in particular that of RHIC and the EIC projects. The luminosity achievable with AFTER@LHC using typical targets would surpass that of RHIC by more that 3 orders of magnitude in a similar energy region. In unpolarised proton-proton collisions, AFTER@LHC allows for measurements of TMDs such as the Boer-Mulders quark distributions, the distribution of unpolarised and linearly polarised gluons in unpolarised protons. Using the polarisation of hydrogen and nuclear targets, one can measure transverse single-spin asymmetries of quark and gluon sensitive probes, such as, respectively, Drell-Yan pair and quarkonium production. The fixed-target mode has the advantage to allow for measurements in the target-rapidity region, namely at large x^uparrow in the polarised nucleon. Overall, this allows for an ambitious spin program which we outline here., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, 1 table, LaTeX. In the CERN NA63 collaboration we have addressed the question of the potential inadequacy of the commonly used Migdal formulation of the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal (LPM) effect by measuring the photon emission by 20 and 178 GeV electrons in the range 100 MeV - 4 GeV, in targets of LowDensityPolyEthylene (LDPE), C, Al, Ti, Fe, Cu, Mo and, as a reference target, Ta. For each target and energy, a comparison between simulated values based on the LPM suppression of incoherent bremsstrahlung is shown, taking multi-photon effects into account. For these targets and energies, we find that Migdal's theoretical formulation is adequate to a precision of better than about 5%, irrespective of the target substance., Comment: 8 pages, 13 figures

Physics::Fluid Dynamics - Abstract
Actuator disc and actuator line techniques are widely used for modelling wind turbines operating in wind farms. These techniques essentially replace the blade geometry with applied body forces, which reduce the resolved length scales significantly and hence the required grid resolution. This work is a verification of the coupling between the flow solver EllipSys3D and the aeroelastic tool Flex5, through a quantitative comparison of coupled actuator line, coupled actuator disc, and standalone Flex5. Steady state performance predictions, instantaneous reaction to turbulence and damage equivalent load analyses all show a very good agreement between the three methods. Differences can be explained primarily by the higher fidelity modelling of the coupled simulations; this is particularly in regard to the influence of blade flexibility, as the actuators deflect and interact with the modelled flow. Additionally, some overpredictions of loading at the blade tip and root below rated velocity for the actuator methods can be attributed to the Gaussian smearing used to apply the body forces.

- Abstract
Ethicists are often included as part of interdisciplinary research projects when the research is deemed ethically controversial, e.g. in research aimed at developing biotechnologies to be applied in food production. The stated or implied expectations are often that ethicists can deliver a stamp of moral approval or advice on how to avoid moral disapproval. We argue that these expectations ask too much of applied ethics. A normative judgment requires a combination of ethical analysis and a normative perspective, but it is not possible for the ethicist to decide whether one normative starting point is objectively better than another. In light of this, some ethicists have turned to empirical ethics to find a normativity that is independent of the ethicist’s particular biases. In this paper we assess the dialogical empirical ethics methodology developed by Widdershoven et al. as an example of an approach that claims to develop an emerging normativity through interaction with the stakeholders in the process. However, we find that this approach inevitably introduces ethicist-dependent normativity that cannot be relied upon as the sort of objective answer that is sought by those posing the question. The focus on generating normativity undermines the methodology when it is not successful, and in fact does not represent the most important contribution of such methods when they are successful. When methods are directed away from their attempt to ‘generate’ normativity, and instead onto their ability to ‘translate’ normativity into a given context, they represent a valuable tool in providing the type of guidance that is increasingly asked of ethicists. Understanding and pursuing this alternative aim does not diminish the importance of including ethicists in controversial research projects, but it changes their role: Instead of providing normative judgment, they should be used to make the values that are relevant to the research project transparent, determine how those values and commitments could be expressed in the given context, and facilitate dialogues between stakeholders.

- Abstract
Utility-scale projects for hydrokinetic energy extraction from rivers, tidal or ocean currents could include tens to hundreds of turbines in densely-packed hydro farms. The aim of the present paper is to obtain a better understanding of the power production and wakes generated by several devices modeling a straight array of horizontal-axis water turbines in a hydro farm. To accomplish this, stereo particle image velocimetry experiments were carried out to measure the flow properties upstream and downstream of the devices in the array including up to four elements. The study also provides measured values of power and thrust coefficients of the model turbines using strain gauges installed directly on the rotor shaft. The current laboratory experiments provide data on the efficiency of water turbines in arrays or in a hydro farm arranged in a single line.

- Abstract
Pregnancy and childbirth are among the strongest risk factors for depression but the neurocognitive mechanisms underlying this enhanced risk are unknown. This study investigated emotional and non-emotional cognition in 57 pregnant women with or without an affective disorder during their third trimester, and the association between cognitive biases and subsequent postpartum depression (PPD). Of the pregnant women, 22 had a diagnosis of unipolar disorder (UD) and seven of bipolar disorder (BD) in full or partial remission, while 28 had no history of affective disorder. We included a control group of 29 healthy non-pregnant women. First, participants were interviewed, completed non-emotional and emotional cognitive tests and lastly filled out questionnaires. The participants were assessed two times after birth: at a home visit shortly after birth, and with a telephone interview to assess PPD in the first six months after birth. Healthy pregnant women rated infant cries less negatively than non-pregnant women, possibly reflecting preparation for motherhood. Pregnant women with UD exhibited a negative bias in ratings of infant cries, whereas pregnant women with BD showed a positive bias in ratings of infant happy faces and recognition of adult facial expressions. Across all pregnant women, more negative ratings of infant cries were associated with enhanced risk of PPD. Negatively biased perception of infant cries during pregnancy may thus signal vulnerability toward PPD.

- Abstract
One promising design solution for increasing the efficiency of modern horizontal axis wind turbines is the installation of curved tip extensions. However, introducing such complex geometries may move traditional aerodynamic models based on blade element momentum (BEM) theory out of their range of applicability. This motivated the present work, where a swept tip shape is investigated by means of both experimental and numerical tests. The latter group accounted for a wide variety of aerodynamic models, allowing us to highlight the capabilities and limitations of each of them in a relative manner. The considered swept tip shape is the result of a design optimization, focusing on locally maximizing power performance within load constraints. For the experimental tests, the tip model is instrumented with spanwise bands of pressure sensors and is tested in the Poul la Cour wind tunnel at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). The methods used for the numerical tests consisted of a blade element model, a near-wake model, lifting-line free-wake models, and a fully resolved Navier–Stokes solver. The comparison of the numerical and the experimental test results is performed for a given range of angles of attack and wind speeds, which is representative of the expected conditions in operation. Results show that the blade element model cannot predict the measured normal force coefficients, but the other methods are generally in good agreement with the measurements in attached flow. Flow visualization and pressure distribution compare well with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. The agreement in the clean case is better than in the tripped case at the inboard sections. Some uncertainties regarding the effect of the boundary layer at the inboard tunnel wall and the post-stall behavior remain.

As the major part of new wind turbines are installed in clusters or wind farms, there is a strong need for reliable and accurate tools for predicting the increased loadings due to wake operation and the associated reduced power production. The dynamic wake meandering (DWM) model has been developed on this background, and the basic physical mechanisms in the wake--i.e., the velocity deficit, the meandering of the deficit, and the added turbulence--are modeled as simply as possible in order to make fast computations. In the present paper, the DWM model is presented in a version suitable for full integration in an aeroelastic model Calibration and validation of the different parts of the model is carried out by comparisons with actuator disk and actuator line (ACL) computations as well as with inflow measurements on a full-scale 2 MW turbine. It is shown that the load generating part of the increased turbulence in the wake is due almost exclusively to meandering of the velocity deficit, which causes 'apparent' turbulence when measuring the flow in a fixed point in the wake. Added turbulence, originating mainly from breakdown of tip vortices and from the shear of the velocity deficit, has only a minor contribution to the total turbulence and with a small length scale in the range of 10-25% of the ambient turbulence length scale. Comparisons of the calibrated DWM model with ACL results for different downstream positions and ambient turbulence levels show good correlation for both wake deficits and turbulence levels. Finally, added turbulence characteristics are compared with correlation results from literature. [DOI: 10.1115/1.4002555]

Physics::Fluid Dynamics - Abstract
The present study investigates the differences in the predicted lift for a wind tunnel model from either surface pressures or side wall pressures. The investigated model is the NACA63-418 tested in the Poul la Cour tunnel. The measurements are compared with previous conducted wind tunnel campaigns for a Reynolds number of 3E6. The 3D CFD model of the wind tunnel will be used for investigating details of the flow mechanisms, and to validate assumptions and findings from the experimental data. The CFD simulations show that when the flow is attached the lift based on the side wall pressures results in almost the same lift as calculated from the surface pressures. Around the maximum lift and in the stalled region the flow is not anymore 2D. For the NACA63-418 airfoil the lift based on the side wall pressures are generally highest. The CFD simulations confirm that the method used to predict the lift from the limited side wall pressure strips in the wind tunnel is applicable.

- Abstract
We analyze the new Danish Poul la Cour Tunnel (PLCT) facility using 2D and 3D Computation Fluid Dynamics simulations, with the aim to address the need for wind tunnel corrections. The assessment of tunnel corrections is based on 2D free simulations representing undisturbed airfoil flow, 2D tunnel configurations and a full 3D tunnel setup using laminar/turbulent Improved Delayed Dettached Eddy Simulations. By comparing lift, drag and pressure distributions and detailled flow patterns, the influence of the 2D and 3D tunnel is evaluated. In the present study a NACA 633-418 airfoil is investigated in the tunnel.

- Abstract
The experimental testing of a Tension Leg Platform (TLP) floating wind turbine at 1:60 scale in wind and waves with a pitch-regulated 10 MW wind turbine is presented. The floating wind turbine was tested with three different control configurations: two closed-loop controllers and one open-loop controller. The experimental setup and program is described in this paper, and system identification and the responses of the floater to hydrodynamic loading are analysed and compared for the different control strategies. It was observed that negative aerodynamic damping for the onshore controller resulted in high oscillations in blade pitch, yielding an increased response in surge for all wave types. It was also observed that the surge motion governed the mooring line tensions, thus the onshore controller yielded the highest tensions in the front mooring line. Further the shutdown cases of the offshore controller led to larger surge displacement when the shutdown was initialized right before the wave impact.

Physics ,QC1-999 - Abstract
The fixed-target mode has the advantage to allow for measurements in the target-rapidity region, namely at large x↑ in the polarised nucleon. Overall, this allows for an ambitious spin program which we outline here.
