Abstract

This paper reports the first measurement using the NOvA detectors of $\nu_\mu$ disappearance in a $\nu_\mu$ beam. The analysis uses a 14 kton-equivalent exposure of $2.74 \times 10^{20}$ protons-on-target from the Fermilab NuMI beam. Assuming the normal neutrino mass hierarchy, we measure $\Delta m^{2}_{32}=(2.52^{+0.20}_{-0.18})\times 10^{-3}$ eV$^{2}$ and $\sin^2\theta_{23}$ in the range 0.38-0.65, both at the 68% confidence level, with two statistically-degenerate best fit points at $\sin^2\theta_{23} = $ 0.43 and 0.60. Abstract

We report results from the first search for $\nu_\mu\to\nu_e$ transitions by the NOvA experiment. In an exposure equivalent to $2.74\times10^{20}$ protons-on-target in the upgraded NuMI beam at Fermilab, we observe 6 events in the Far Detector, compared to a background expectation of $0.99\pm0.11$ (syst.) events based on the Near Detector measurement. A secondary analysis observes 11 events with a background of $1.07\pm0.14$ (syst.). The $3.3\sigma$ excess of events observed in the primary analysis disfavors $0.1\pi < \delta_{CP} < 0.5\pi$ in the inverted mass hierarchy at the 90% C.L., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures. Abstract

We present a new dataset analysis of the neutrino experiment at the Baksan Underground Scintillator Telescope with muon energy threshold about 1 GeV for the longest exposure time toward the Sun. In search for a signal from self-annihilations of dark matter particles in the center of the Sun we use an updated sample of upward through-going muons for 24.12 years of live time. No observable excess has been found in measured muons relative to expected background from neutrinos of atmospheric origin. We present an improved data analysis procedure and describe it in detail. We set the 90\% C.L. new upper limits on expected neutrino and muon fluxes from dark matter annihilations in the Sun, on the corresponding annihilation rates and cross sections of their elastic scattering off proton., Comment: 25 pages, 12 figures, analysis improved, discussion of systematic uncertainties added, references and two new figures added, modest changes in upper limits, conclusions unchanged. Abstract

We report theoretical and experimental results of on-going feasibility studies to detect cosmic neutrinos acoustically in Lake Baikal. In order to examine ambient noise conditions and to develop respective pulse detection techniques a prototype device was created. Abstract

A widely used relativistic Fermi gas model and plane-wave impulse approximation are tested against electron-nucleus scattering data. Inclusive quasi-elastic cross section are calculated and compared with high-precision data for C, O, and Ca. A dependence of agreement between calculated cross section and data on a momentum transfer is shown. Abstract

It is shown that the combination of the structure functions $F_2$ predicted by the CKMT model at low and moderate values of $Q^2$ and MRS99 parton distribution functions at high $Q^2$ gives a good description of the data over complete measured region of $x$ and $Q^2$. Using these structure functions the main characteristics of the muon-nucleus inelastic scattering are calculated. Abstract

We describe two independent methods to calculate the angular distribution of muons after traversing a thick scatterer due to multiple Coulomb scattering. Both methods take into account the nuclear size effect. We demonstrate a necessity to account for the nucleus extension as well as incoherent scattering on atomic electrons to describe the muon scattering at large angles in thick matter layers. Abstract

We consider a solution of the atmospheric neutrino problem based on oscillations of muon neutrinos to sterile neutrinos: $\nu_{\mu}$ $\leftrightarrow$ $\nu_s$. The zenith angle ($\Theta$) dependences of the neutrino and upward-going muon fluxes in presence of these oscillations are studied. The dependences have characteristic form with two dips: at $\cos \Theta = -0.6 \div -0.2$ and $\cos \Theta = -1.0 \div -0.8$. The latter dip is due to parametric resonance in oscillations of neutrinos which cross the core of the earth. 10. Vacuum oscillations of solar neutrinos: correlation between spectrum distortion and seasonal variations

Abstract

Long length vacuum oscillations solution of the solar neutrino problem is discussed. We show that there is a strict correlation between a distortion of the neutrino energy spectrum and an amplitude of seasonal variations of the neutrino flux. The slope parameter which characterizes a distortion of the recoil electron energy spectrum in the Super-Kamiokande experiment and the seasonal asymmetry of the signal have been calculated in a wide range of oscillation parameters. The correlation of the slope and asymmetry gives crucial criteria for identification or exclusion of this solution. Abstract

We discuss the final results of the MACRO experiment on atmospheric neutrino oscillations. The data concern event topologies with average neutrino energies of ~3 and ~50 GeV. Multiple Coulomb Scattering of the high energy muons was used to estimate the neutrino energy event by event. The angular distributions, the L/E_nu distribution, the particle ratios and the absolute fluxes all favor nu_mu --> nu_tau oscillations with maximal mixing and Delta m^2 ~0.0023 eV^2. Emphasis is given to measured ratios which are not affected by Monte Carlo (MC) absolute normalization; a discussion is made on MC uncertainties. A preliminary search for possible Lorentz invariance violation contributions to atmospheric neutrino oscillations is presented and discussed., 4 pages, 6 figures. Abstract

The MACRO experiment detected different categories of atmospheric muon neutrinos. We describe in this paper the energy estimate of upward throughgoing muons by using the multiple coulomb scattering. Combining the results of such analysis with the upgoing muon angular distribution, both not using the absolute ν flux normalization informations, an evidence above 4σ for atmospheric neutrino oscillation is found.

Abstract

In the MACRO experiment the flux of atmospheric muon neutrinos has been studied through the detection of upward-going muons generated in the rock below the detector and also through neutrino interactions inside the apparatus. Several topologies of neutrino events have been detected, which correspond to different neutrino parent energies. The measured flux in the different data sets shows a deficit with respect to the Monte Carlo predictions. Moreover, the upward-throughgoing muon sample (median neutrino energy ∼ 50 GeV ) also shows a distortion in the angular distribution shape. Interpreted in terms of neutrino oscillation, these results favor a ν μ into ν τ oscillation scenario, while the ν μ into ν sterile channel is disfavared at 99% C.L.

Abstract

This paper reports the first measurement using the NOvA detectors of nu(mu) disappearance in a nu(mu) beam. The analysis uses a 14 kton-equivalent exposure of 2.74 x 10(20) protons-on-target from the Fermilab NuMI beam. Assuming the normal neutrino mass hierarchy, we measure Delta m(32)(2) = (2.52(-0.18)(+0.20)) x 10(-3) eV(2) and sin(2) theta(23) in the range 0.38-0.65, both at the 68% confidence level, with two statistically degenerate best-fit points at sin(2) theta(23) = 0.43 and 0.60. Results for the inverted mass hierarchy are also presented.

Abstract

We report results from the first search for nu(mu) -> nu(e) transitions by the NOvA experiment. In an exposure equivalent to 2.74 x 10(20) protons on target in the upgraded NuMI beam at Fermilab, we observe 6 events in the Far Detector, compared to a background expectation of 0.99 +/- 0.11 (syst) events based on the Near Detector measurement. A secondary analysis observes 11 events with a background of 1.07 +/- 0.14 (syst). The 3.3 sigma excess of events observed in the primary analysis disfavors 0.1 pi < delta(CP) < 0.5 pi in the inverted mass hierarchy at the 90% C.L.

Abstract

A measurement of the flux of neutrino-induced muons using the MACRO detector is presented. Different event topologies, corresponding to different neutrino parent energies can be detected. The upward throughgoing muon sample is the larger event sample. The observed upward-throughgoing muons are 26% fewer than expected and the zenith angle distribution does not fit with the expected one. Assuming neutrino oscillations, both measurements suggest maximum mixing and Dm2 of a few times 10-3 eV2. The other samples are due to the internally produced events and to upward-going stopping muons.
