The West Kowloon Cultural District Artist Square Bridge (ASB) is a part of Hong Kong’s new art and cultural district development. It forms a primary pedestrian link between the adjacent MTR station and the new development. ASB is a design-and-build project consisting of a 78m clear spanning, 8m wide footbridge, an access lift tower and a 30m long staircase and escalators. The footbridge is a covered, dual steel arch and Vierendeel truss footbridge, that crosses an existing flyover, connecting the station shopping mall to the new development. During construction of ASB, very limited space was available on the new development site to accommodate the construction of ASB. These posed engineering challenges to the design and construction team. This paper presents the design of the ASB structures with particular focus on the main footbridge, and the challenges encountered during the design and construction of ASB and how incremental launching solution was developed to tackle these challenges.

Singapore faces a problem of how to deal with its waste and has consequently designated a site in the industrial area of Tuas for an incinerator and waste treatment plant. To access the site, two bridges are required to cross a waterway serving cooling water to an existing power station. This paper discusses the constraints faced in the design and construction of the bridges and how the Designer and Contractor developed innovative solutions to overcome challenges they posed.In planning the bridges, it was essential that at no stage construction activity impacted the operation of the inlets and the associated access provisions. To meet this requirement, the bridges needed to span a clear distance of 75 m. With the aim of minimising the programme time required to construct the bridge, precast techniques were to be used extensively, with the pier heads each side of the main span being precast shells 28 m in length and the main beams being 50 m long precast U beams.

The West Kowloon Station North is the largest civil contract awarded for the Hong Kong Section of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link. Located in the heart of Kowloon, the Station will serve as Hong Kong’s international gateway to China. This paper focuses on the iconic station entrance building roof structure construction and the solutions adopted to tackle the complex construction and engineering challenges, to achieve timely construction programme and to deliver successfully the architect vision of this new landmark infrastructure.

The Macau Eiffel Tower is a faithful replica of the Paris Eiffel Tower, constructed next to the Venetian Hotel on the famous Cotai Strip in Taipa, Macau. The Macau Eiffel Tower forms a part of the hotel development and will complement the hotel, acting both as a landmark feature and a tourist observatory tower. This paper presents the challenges encountered and the engineering solutions provided during the structural design phase through to the construction phase and how effective project management has brought successful collaboration between the project teams to deliver the recreation of the Eiffel Tower in Macau.
