Membrane transporters are important for maintaining brain homeostasis by regulating the passage of solutes into, out of, and within the brain. Growing evidence suggests neurotoxic effects of air pollution exposure and its contribution to neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer's disease (AD), yet limited knowledge is available on the exact cellular impacts of exposure. This study investigates how exposure to ubiquitous solid components of air pollution, ultrafine particles (UFPs), influence brain homeostasis by affecting protein levels of membrane transporters. Membrane transporters were quantified and compared in brain cortical samples of wild-type and the 5xFAD mouse model of AD in response to subacute exposure to inhaled UFPs. The cortical ASCT1 and ABCB1 transporter levels were elevated in wild-type and 5xFAD mice subjected to a 2-week UFP exposure paradigm, suggesting impairment of brain homeostatic mechanisms. This study provides new insight on the molecular mechanisms underlying adverse effects of air pollution on the brain.

Small-scale biomass combustion is an important source of fine particles in ambient air, causing adverse health and environmental effects. Thus, there is a clear need to develop efficient and feasible flue gas cleaning technologies for small-scale combustion appliances. In this study a novel electrical charging condensing heat exchanger (eCHX) for combined fine particle removal and efficient heat recovery from flue gases was demonstrated in a small biomass-fired boiler. The method is based on the combination of a shielded corona charger and a condensing heat exchanger, where fine particles are removed by the electrophoretic, thermophoretic and diffusiophoretic forces. The eCHX was found to decrease >80% of fine particle mass (PM1) emissions and >40% of particle number emissions with simultaneous high thermal efficiency in the heat exchanger. The usage of the condensing heat exchanger without electrical charging resulted in 40% decrease in PM1 emissions when compared to the usage of a traditional tube heat exchanger. The advantage of the eCHX system is that it replaces the conventional heat exchanger in boilers, making it a compact and inexpensive solution, when compared to additional flue gas cleaning devices installed after the boiler.

Solid fuel usage in residential heating and cooking is one of the largest sources of ambient and indoor air particulate matter, which causes adverse effects on the health of millions of peoples worldwide. Emissions from solid fuel combustion, such as biomass or coal, are detrimental to health, but toxicological responses are largely unknown. In the present study, we compared the toxicological responses regarding cytotoxicity, inflammation and genotoxicity of spruce (SPR) and brown coal briquette (BCB) combustion aerosols on human alveolar epithelial cells (A549) as well as a coculture of A549 and differentiated human monocytic cells (THP-1) into macrophages exposed at the air-liquid interface (ALI). We included both the high emissions from the first hour and moderate emissions from the third hour of the batch combustion experiment in one ALI system, whereas, in the second ALI system, we exposed the cells during the whole 4-hour combustion experiment, including all combustion phases. Physico-chemical properties of the combustion aerosol were analysed both online and offline. Both SPR and BCB combustion aerosols caused mild cytotoxic but notable genotoxic effects in co-cultured A549 cells after one-hour exposure. Inflammatory response analysis revealed BCB combustion aerosols to cause a mild increase in CXCL1 and CXCL8 levels, but in the case of SPR combustion aerosol, a decrease compared to control was observed.

Small-scale batch combustion of wood is a major source of fine particles, black carbon emission and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in Finland. The mass and chemical compositions of batch combustion emissions are known to be highly time-dependent. In this study, the gaseous and particulate batch combustion emissions of three European wood species (beech, birch and spruce) were quantified in detail with an extensive set of online analysers, including a soot particle aerosol mass spectrometer (SP-AMS) for real-time detection of particulate chemical composition. Ignition and a new batch addition on top of glowing embers were identified as the primary low temperature events during which both particulate and gaseous organic emissions peaked. The flaming combustion created high temperature conditions and produced increased emissions of refractory black carbon (rBC) and PAHs. The residual char combustion phase was characterized by low particulate mass emission consisting mainly of alkali salts and elevated concentrations of gaseous organic emissions and CO. Overall, hardwood species (beech and birch) had the highest PM1 emissions, and the difference between the lowest average emission (spruce) and the highest (birch) was more than 3-fold. The increasing combustion chamber temperature during sequential combustion of wood batches was found to decrease the carbonaceous fraction of the PM as well as OC/EC ratio, as the result of more efficient secondary combustion.

New particulate matter (PM) filtering technologies are needed to meet the emission regulations for small combustion appliances. In this work, we investigate the performance of a novel electrical particle filtration system, the single needle shielded corona charger (SCC), which offers an advantageous solution for PM control in boilers by enhancing particulate deposition within existing boiler sections. Experiments under different operating conditions of a wood-fired boiler were performed, wherein the SCC was installed upstream of either a condensing heat exchanger (CHX) or a cyclone. PM reduction was found to be strongly affected by the SCC temperature and the following collection surface area, and reached its highest reduction efficiency of >90% at the temperature range of 400–500 °C when operating in combination with a CHX. The SCC–cyclone combination was less efficient, providing a 27% PM reduction, as a result of the low surface area and residence time in the cyclone. These results indicate that the SCC can feasibly provide particle filtration when combined with a CHX, wet scrubber, or a cyclone to meet the new emission regulation requirements. The system is best suited for small-scale boilers but can be scaled up to larger boilers by increasing the number of corona chargers.

Residential wood combustion (RWC) emits large amounts of gaseous and particulate organic aerosol (OA). In the atmosphere, the emission is transformed via oxidative reactions, which are under daylight conditions driven mainly by hydroxyl radicals (OH). This continuing oxidative ageing produces secondary OA and may change the health- and climate-related properties of the emission. However, it is not well known how the composition of RWC-originated OA changes as the function of OH exposure. In this work, emissions from two modern residential logwood combustion appliances were photochemically aged in an oxidation flow reactor (OFR) with various OH exposure levels, reaching up to 6×1011 s cm−3 (equivalent to 1 week in the atmosphere). Gaseous organic compounds were analysed by proton transfer reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometry (PTR-ToF-MS), while particulate OA was analysed online by a high-resolution soot particle aerosol mass spectrometer (SP-HR-ToF-AMS) and offline by in situ derivatization thermal desorption–gas chromatography–time-of-flight mass spectrometry (IDTD-GC-ToF-MS). Photochemical reactions increased the mass of particulate organic carbon by a factor of 1.3–3.9. The increase in mass took place during the first atmospheric equivalent day of ageing, after which the enhancement was independent of the extent of photochemical exposure. However, ageing increased the oxidation state of the particulate OA linearly throughout the assessed range, with ΔH:C/ΔO:C slopes between −0.17 and −0.49 in van Krevelen space. Ageing led to an increase in acidic fragmentation products in both phases, as measured by the IDTD-GC-ToF-MS for the particulate and PTR-ToF-MS for the gaseous phase. For the gaseous organic compounds, the formation of small carbonylic compounds combined with the rapid degradation of primary volatile organic compounds such as aromatic compounds led to a continuous increase in both the O : C and H : C ratios. Overall, the share of polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) in particles degraded rapidly during ageing, although some oxygen-substituted PACs, most notably naphthaldehydic acid, increased, in particular during relatively short exposures. Similarly, the concentrations of particulate nitrophenols rose extensively during the first atmospheric equivalent day. During continuous photochemical ageing, the dominant transformation mechanisms shifted from the initial gas-phase functionalization/condensation to the transformation of the particulate OA by further oxidation reactions and fragmentation. The observed continuous transformation of OA composition throughout a broad range of OH exposures indicates that the entire atmospheric lifetime of the emission needs to be explored to fully assess the potential climate and health effects of RWC emissions.

Air pollution emitted by residential biomass combustion (RBC) is a known cause of adverse health and climate effects. Currently, manufacturers of stoves and fireplaces are facing challenges due to tightening emission regulations, such as the Ecodesign Directive in the European Union. Consequently, there is a demand for new emission control solutions for RBC. Herein, a novel method has been introduced to reduce particulate emissions, namely: high-temperature electric soot collector (HiTESC). In this method, an electrically insulated high-voltage electrode is installed in a combustion chamber, which generates an electric field. Particles that acquire the electrical charges produced by flames are collected on the electrode surface and oxidized at high temperatures. A fine particle (PM1) reduction efficiency of 45% was achieved using this method in a logwood-fired masonry heater. The reduction efficiency of the method was found to be dependent on the combustion phase. The PM1 reduction was most efficient during the flaming conditions, when the PM emissions were the highest with the studied logwood appliance. The advantages of this method are its simple construction, low space requirement, and low energy consumption; further, it does not require a separate cleaning mechanism. The proposed method can be used in logwood-fired combustion appliances to achieve future emission regulation limits, without using costly exhaust after-treatment systems.

Interactions between anthropogenic and biogenic emissions, and implications for aerosol production, have raised particular scientific interest. Despite active research in this area, real anthropogenic emission sources have not been exploited for anthropogenic-biogenic interaction studies until now. This work examines these interactions using α-pinene and pellet boiler emissions as a model test system. The impact of pellet boiler emissions on secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation from α-pinene photo-oxidation was studied under atmospherically relevant conditions in an environmental chamber. The aim of this study was to identify which of the major pellet exhaust components (including high nitrogen oxide (NOx), primary particles, or a combination of the two) affected SOA formation from α-pinene. Results demonstrated that high NOx concentrations emitted by the pellet boiler reduced SOA yields from α-pinene, whereas the chemical properties of the primary particles emitted by the pellet boiler had no effect on observed SOA yields. The maximum SOA yield of α-pinene in the presence of pellet boiler exhaust (under high-NOx conditions) was 18.7% and in the absence of pellet boiler exhaust (under low-NOx conditions) was 34.1%. The reduced SOA yield under high-NOx conditions was caused by changes in gas-phase chemistry that led to the formation of organonitrate compounds.

Aerosols emitted from various anthropogenic and natural sources undergo constant physicochemical transformations in the atmosphere, altering their impacts on health and climate. This article presents the design and characteristics of a novel Photochemical Emission Aging flow tube Reactor (PEAR). The PEAR was designed to provide sufficient aerosol mass and flow for simultaneous measurement of the physicochemical properties of aged aerosols and emission exposure studies (in vivo and in vitro). The performance of the PEAR was evaluated by using common precursors of secondary aerosols as well as combustion emissions from a wood stove and a gasoline engine. The PEAR was found to provide a near laminar flow profile, negligible particle losses for particle sizes above 40 nm, and a narrow residence time distribution. These characteristics enable resolution of temporal emission patterns from dynamic emission sources such as small-scale wood combustion. The formation of secondary organic aerosols (SOA) in the PEAR was found to be similar to SOA formation in a smog chamber when toluene and logwood combustion emissions were used as aerosol sources. The aerosol mass spectra obtained from the PEAR and smog-chamber were highly similar when wood combustion was used as the emission source. In conclusion, the PEAR was found to plausibly simulate the photochemical aging of organic aerosols with high flow rates, needed for studies to investigate the effects of aged aerosols on human health. The method also enables to study the aging of different emission phases in high time resolution, and with different OH-radical exposures up to conditions representing long-range transported aerosols. There is currently great interest in replacing fossil-oil with renewable fuels in energy production. Fast pyrolysis bio-oil (FPBO) made of lignocellulosic biomass is one such alternative to replace fossil oil, such as heavy fuel oil (HFO), in energy boilers. However, it is not known how this fuel change will alter the quantity and quality of emissions affecting human health. In this work, particulate emissions from a real-scale commercially operated FPBO boiler plant are characterized, including extensive physico-chemical and toxicological analyses. These are then compared to emission characteristics of heavy fuel-oil and wood fired boilers. Finally, the effects of the fuel choice on the emissions, their potential health effects and the requirements for flue gas cleaning in small-to medium-sized boiler units are discussed. The total suspended particulate matter and fine particulate matter (PM1) concentrations in FPBO boiler flue gases before filtration were higher than in HFO boilers and lower or on a level similar to wood-fired grate boilers. FPBO particles consisted mainly of ash species and contained less polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and heavy metals than had previously been measured from HFO combustion. This feature was clearly reflected in the toxicological properties of FPBO particle emissions, which showed less acute toxicity effects on the cell line than HFO combustion particles. The electrostatic precipitator used in the boiler plant efficiently removed flue gas particles of all sizes. Only minor differences in the toxicological properties of particles upstream and downstream of the electrostatic precipitator were observed, when the same particulate mass from both situations was given to the cells.

A study about the temporal variation of organic emissions from a modern wood log fired masonry heater was carried out with different gas analysis techniques: single-photon ionisation time-of-flight mass spectrometry (SPI-TOFMS) for real-time analysis of volatile (VOC), intermediate-volatile (IVOC) and semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOC), and a gas analyser system for gaseous components CO2, CO, NOx and organic gaseous carbon (OGC, quantified by flame ionisation detector). The emissions of three in Europe common types of firewood (beech, birch and spruce) were investigated by combustion of six consecutive batches of 2.5 kg each over 4 h. Batchwise emissions and temporal variations during combustion were discussed. Emission factors over the whole combustion cycle for OGC, VOC and IVOC were right up to one order of magnitude lower than in many previous studies due to latest improvements of air staging technology in wood log fired masonry heaters, whereas CO and NOx remained comparable. Regarding each combustion experiment, more than 50% of the total intensity of the mass spectra occurred during the combustion of the first two batches. Moreover, the molecular signatures of burning phases ('ignition', 'stable combustion' and 'ember') were examined by using non-negative matrix factorisation (NMF) and principal component analysis (PCA) in sequence. Marker substances for wood or biomass combustion, such as phenolic species or furan derivatives, exhibited highest relative abundance during 'stable combustion', whereas 'ember' is distinctly characterised by polyunsaturated hydrocarbons, such as benzene or naphthalene, through pyrosynthesis; in 'ignition', secondary decomposition products dominated. Nevertheless, highest quantitative emissions always occurred during 'ignition' at the beginning of each batch, followed by the phases 'ember' and 'stable combustion'.

Sauna Stoves (SS) are simple wood combustion appliances used mainly in Nordic countries. They generate emissions that have an impact on air quality and climate. In this study, a new measurement concept for comparing the operation, thermal efficiency, and real-life fine particle and gaseous emissions of SS was utilized. In addition, a novel, simple, and universal emission calculation procedure for the determination of nominal emission factors was developed for which the equations are presented for the first time. Fine particle and gaseous concentrations from 10 different types of SS were investigated. It was found that each SS model was an individual in relation to stove performance: stove heating time, air-to-fuel ratio, thermal efficiency, and emissions. Nine-fold differences in fine particle mass (PM1) concentrations, and about 90-fold differences in concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) were found between the SS, when dry (11% moisture content) birch wood was used. By using moist (18%) wood, particle number and carbon monoxide concentrations increased, but interestingly, PM1, PAH, and black carbon (BC) concentrations clearly decreased, when comparing to dry wood. E.g., PAH concentrations were 5.5&ndash, 9.6 times higher with dry wood than with moist wood. Between wood species, 2&ndash, 3-fold maximum differences in the emissions were found, whereas about 1.5-fold differences were observed between bark-containing and debarked wood logs. On average, the emissions measured in this study were considerably lower than in previous studies and emission inventories. This suggests that overall the designs of sauna stoves available on the market have improved during the 2010s. The findings of this study were used to update the calculation scheme behind the inventories, causing the estimates for total PM emissions from SS in Finland to decrease. However, wood-fired sauna stoves are still estimated to be the highest individual emission source of fine particles and black carbon in Finland.

Residential wood combustion (RWC) emits high amounts of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into ambient air, leading to formation of secondary organic aerosol (SOA), and various health and climate effects. In this study, the emission factors of VOCs from a logwood-fired modern masonry heater were measured using a Proton-Transfer Reactor Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometer. Next, the VOCs were aged in a 29 m(3) Teflon chamber equipped with UV black lights, where dark and photochemical atmospheric conditions were simulated. The main constituents of the VOC emissions were carbonyls and aromatic compounds, which accounted for 50%-52% and 30%-46% of the detected VOC emission, respectively. Emissions were highly susceptible to different combustion conditions, which caused a 2.4-fold variation in emission factors. The overall VOC concentrations declined considerably during both dark and photochemical aging, with simultaneous increase in particulate organic aerosol mass. Especially furanoic and phenolic compounds decreased, and they are suggested to be the major precursors of RWC-originated SOA in all aging conditions. On the other hand, dark aging produced relatively high amounts of nitrogen-containing organic compounds in both gas and particulate phase, while photochemical aging increased especially the concentrations of certain gaseous carbonyls, particularly acid anhydrides.

The consumption of wood fuel is markedly increasing in developing and industrialized countries. Known side effects of wood smoke inhalation manifest in proinflammatory signaling, oxidative stress, DNA damage and hence increased cancer risk. In this study, the composition and acute biological impact of emissions of state-of-the-art wood combustion compliances: masonry heater (MH) and pellet boiler (PB) were investigated. Therefore A549 cells were exposed to emission aerosols in an automated air-liquid interface exposure station followed by cytotoxicity, transcriptome and proteome analyses. In parallel, aerosols were subjected to a chemical and physical haracterization. Compared to PB, the MH combustion at the same dilution ratio resulted in a 3-fold higher particle mass concentration (PM2.5) and deposited dose (PB: 27 $\pm$ 2 ng/cm2, MH; 73 $\pm$ 12 ng/cm2). Additionally, the MH aerosol displayed a substantially larger concentration of aldehydes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) or oxidized PAH. Gene ontology analysis of transcriptome of A549 cells exposed to MH emissions revealed the activation of proinflammatory response and key signaling cascades MAP kinase and JAK-STAT. Furthermore, CYP1A1, an essential enzyme in PAH metabolism, was induced. PB combustion aerosol activated the proinflammatory marker IL6 and different transport processes. The proteomics data uncovered induction of DNA damage-associated proteins in response to PB and DNA doublestrand break processing proteins in response to MH emissions. Taking together, the MH produces emissions with a higher particle dose and more toxic compounds while causing only mild biological responses. This finding points to a significant mitigating effect of antioxidative compounds in MH wood smoke.

Gas-phase emission samples of carbonyl compounds (CCs) were collected from two modern wood combustion appliances. Multiple repetitions were conducted on masonry heater operated with three logwood species (birch, beech, and spruce) and for a pellet boiler operated by softwood pellet with normal combustion and unoptimized combustion (in which the secondary combustion air flow rate was decreased). The sampling of CCs was performed from diluted exhaust using 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH) cartridges. The CCs-hydrazone derivatives were analyzed by a gas chromatography–selective ion monitoring–mass spectrometry (GC-SIM-MS) method. Twelve (12) CCs were quantified in the masonry heater emissions and 8 in the pellet boiler emissions. The total carbonyl emission factors (EFs) for logwood were determined to be as follows: birch, 113 ± 18 mg kg–1; beech, 178 ± 31 mg kg–1; spruce, 171 ± 19 mg kg–1; and, for softwood pellet with normal combustion, 6 ± 0.9 mg kg–1 and for softwood pellet with unoptimized combustion, ...

The emissions and ash behaviour during combustion of wood chips, or co-combustion of two solid agricultural fuels (reed canary grass and barley straw) with wood chips, were studied. In addition, the sensitivity of the results towards different air-staging conditions was investigated using pure wood chips. The experiments were carried out in a 40-kW combustion reactor equipped with a reciprocating-grate burner. The addition of the reed canary grass to the wood chips increased only slightly the emission of fine particles (PM1), nitrogen oxides (NOX) and sulphur dioxide (SO2); while carbon monoxide (CO), hydrogen chloride (HCl), organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC) and the geometric diameter (GMD) of the particles either decreased or remained unchanged. However, the number of particles emitted increased 2-fold in the reed canary grass combustion compared to the pure wood chips. In contrast, the addition of straw to wood chips substantially increased the emissions of PM1, CO, EC, SO2 and HCl. The straw-originating particles were mostly crystalline KCl, and their number emission was clearly reduced, but their size was larger compared to the case with pure wood chips. The distribution of the combustion air had only a very minor influence on the release of the major ash species, whereas the effect was significant for the release of specific trace metals and the products of incomplete combustion. Finally, the partitioning of ash-forming elements with various fuels was evaluated based on chemical analyses of the fuel, bottom ash and fine fly ash fractions.

The use of wood instead of oil fuels in heating systems is strongly encouraged in many countries. Yet it is unknown to what extent such a large-scale change from oil to wood fuels in heating systems would contribute to any negative health effects from their emissions. We compared the toxicological properties of particulate matter (PM) emissions from wood and oil fuels from two small-scale and two medium-scale heating systems. To assess whether oil or wood combustion emissions cause adverse effects and which PM emissions' effects are more profound, we measured cell viability and proliferation, inflammatory markers, as well as DNA damage in RAW264.7 mouse macrophages. We found that the medium-scale oil-fueled heating system induced a dose-dependent increase of DNA damage, short-term cytotoxic effects, and a cell cycle arrest in the G2/M-phase. We did not detect an induction of DNA damage by the medium-scale wood-fired system. However, we detected significant short-term cytotoxicity. We found that both oil and wood combustion emission samples from the small-scale heating systems induced DNA damage. However, the short-term cytotoxic effects were greater for the PM emissions from the oil-fired heating system. PM mass emissions differed significantly between the tested heating systems. The lowest emissions, 0.1 mg/MJ, were produced by the small-scale oil-fired heating system; the highest emissions, 20.3 mg/MJ, by the medium-scale oil-fired heating system. The wood-fired heating systems' PM mass emissions were in between these concentrations, complicating the direct comparison of the emissions' health related toxic effects. Conclusively, our results indicate that the emissions from both the small- and the medium-scale wood-fueled heating systems cause overall less cytotoxicity and DNA damage in a cell model than the emissions from the corresponding oil-fueled heating systems. Hence, controlled wood-fueled heating systems may be good alternatives to heating systems fired with fuel oil.

Small-scale pellet boilers and stoves became popular as a wood combustion appliance for domestic heating in Europe, North America and Asia due to economic and environmental aspects. Therefore, an increasing contribution of pellet boilers to air pollution is expected despite their general high combustion efficiency. As emissions of primary organic aerosol (POA) and permanent gases of pellet boilers are well investigated, the scope of this study was to investigate the volatile organic emissions and the formation potential of secondary aerosols for this type of appliance. Fresh and aged emissions were analysed by a soot-particle aerosol time-of-flight mass spectrometry (SP-AMS) and the molecular composition of the volatile precursors with single-photon ionisation time-of-flight mass spectrometry (SPI-TOFMS) at different pellet boiler operation conditions. Organic emissions in the gas phase were dominated by unsaturated hydrocarbons while wood-specific VOCs, e.g. phenolic species or substituted furans, were only detected during the starting phase. Furthermore, organic emissions in the gas phase were found to correlate with fuel grade and combustion technology in terms of secondary air supply. Secondary organic aerosols of optimised pellet boiler conditions (OPT, state-of-the-art combustion appliance) and reduced secondary air supply (RSA, used as a proxy for pellet boilers of older type) were studied by simulating atmospheric ageing in a Potential Aerosol Mass (PAM) flow reactor. Different increases in OA mass (55% for OPT, 102% for RSA), associated with higher average carbon oxidation state and O:C, could be observed in a PAM chamber experiment. The effective density of fine particles emitted from small-scale wood combustion of various fuels were determined with a system consisting of an aerosol particle mass analyzer and a scanning mobility particle sizer (APM-SMPS). A novel sampling chamber was combined to the system to enable measurements of highly fluctuating combustion processes. In addition, mass-mobility exponents (relates mass and mobility size) were determined from the density data to describe the shape of the particles. Particle size, type of fuel, combustion phase, and combustion conditions were found to have an effect on the effective density and the particle shape. For example, steady combustion phase produced agglomerates with effective density of roughly 1 g cm(-3) for small particles, decreasing to 0.25 g cm(-3) for 400 nm particles. The effective density was higher for particles emitted from glowing embers phase (ca. 1-2 g cm(-3)), and a clear size dependency was not observed as the particles were nearly spherical in shape. This study shows that a single value cannot be used for the effective density of particles emitted from wood combustion.
