Objective:Evaluating the rate of decline in the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) may help identify patients with occult chronic kidney disease (CKD). We herein report that eGFR fluctuation complicates the assessment of the rate of decline and propose a long-term eGFR plot analysis as a solution., Methods:In 142 patients with persistent eGFR decline in a single hospital, we evaluated the factors influencing the rate of eGFR decline, calculated over the long term (≥3 years) and short term (, Results:The difference between the rate of eGFR decline calculated using short- and long-term plots increased as the time period considered in the short-term plots became shorter. A regression analysis revealed that eGFR fluctuation was the only factor that explained the difference and that the fluctuation exceeded the annual eGFR decline in all participants. Furthermore, the larger the eGFR fluctuation, the more difficult it became to detect eGFR decline using a short-term eGFR analysis. Obesity, a high eGFR at baseline, and faster eGFR decline were associated with larger eGFR fluctuations. To circumvent the issue of eGFR fluctuation in the assessment of the rate of eGFR decline, we developed a system that generates a long-term eGFR plot using all eGFR values for a participant, which enabled the detection of occult CKD, facilitating early therapeutic intervention., Conclusion:The construction of long-term eGFR plots is useful for identifying patients with progressive eGFR decline, as it minimizes the effect of eGFR fluctuation.

Microbially-based plant disease control products have achieved commercial market success, but the efficacy of biocontrol products is sometimes deemed inconsistent. Declines in product viability before or after application results in a mixture of non-viable and viable antagonist cells being present on infection courts. We hypothesized that these non-viable cells could provide a nutritive benefit to plant pathogen propagules and thereby reduce the efficacy and consistency of performance of a biocontrol product. We tested this hypothesis on the pathogen Fusarium graminearum, an important causal agent of Fusarium head blight (FHB) of wheat, and a yeast antagonist Papiliotrema flavescens (formerly Cryptococcus flavescens) strain OH 182.9 3C. When F. graminearum was grown in a liquid basal salts medium without carbon or nitrogen but supplemented with increasing levels of non-viable cells of strain OH 182.9 3C, the amount of pathogen biomass produced increased (P ≤ 0.05) with each sequentially higher level of non-viable cell amendment tested. Total conidial germination of F. graminearum on membranes was initially greatest in the control and least when conidia were combined with live cells of antagonist OH 182.9 3C. Though the presence of dead cells initially resulted in reduced conidial germination, the treatment increased bipolar germination of conidia after 6 h compared to the control (89% and 45%, respectively) (P ≤ 0.05, FPLSD). Treatment with a combination of dead and live cells supported more bipolar germination than live cells alone (51% and 29%, respectively). After 12 h, dead cells had a similar stimulating effect on the branching of germ tubes and negated the reduction in branching seen when treating with live cells alone. Scanning electron microscopy indicated that the presence of non-viable cells of P. flavescens OH 182.9 3C modified the ectotrophic growth of F. graminearum on wheat lemma tissues. In greenhouse experiments, live cells of P. flavescens tended to reduce FHB incidence, severity and the deoxynivalenol content of spring wheat grain compared to the control but treatment with live cells amended with dead cells increased all of these disease parameters compared to the live cells only treatment (P ≤ 0.05, FPLSD). Results indicate that non-viable antagonist cells present in a biocontrol cell treatment can reduce disease control efficacy or even cause the biocontrol treatment to support a net adverse effect on plant health.

Whether begging behaviour mediates food provisioning has been extensively studied in birds. However, begging behaviour occurs without direct offspring competition in some species and thus may be driven exclusively by intrabrood dynamics. We studied begging behaviour of individually housed offspring of the biparental mimic poison frog Ranitomeya imitator. We tested whether (1) begging is an honest signal of need or hunger, (2) begging is costly and (3) parents allocate food according to offspring need. Under manipulation of long-term diet, food-limited tadpoles increased begging effort over the course of development. Tadpoles that were induced to beg suffered a cost of taking longer to reach developmental stages and showed a marginal cost on growth rate. Finally, parents were more likely to feed the tadpole that was exposed to a nonsupplemented diet over its food-supplemented sibling. In R. imitator, begging behaviour appears to signal offspring need honestly and thus may predict differential food provisioning among offspring.

We synthesized a novel series of flying-seed-like derivatives (3a–g) based on phthalocyaninato copper(II) (abbreviated as PcCu) substituted by bulky groups {PhO (a), (o-C1)PhO (b), (m-C1)PhO (c), (p-C1)PhO (d), [m,p-(C1)2]PhO (e), [m,m′-(C1)2]PhO (f), and [m,p,m′-(C1)3]PhO (g)} instead of using long alkyl chains, in order to investigate their mesomorphism. Their phase transition behaviour and the mesophase structures were established using a polarizing optical microscope, a differential scanning calorimeter, a thermogravimetry analyser and a temperature-dependent small angle X-ray diffractometer. It was demonstrated that (PhO)8PcCu (3a) and [(p-C1)PhO]8PcCu (3d) show no mesophase, whereas [(m-C1)PhO]8PcCu (3c), {[m,p-(C1)2]PhO}8PcCu (3e), {[m,m′-(C1)2]PhO}8PcCu (3f), and {[m,p,m′-(C1)3]PhO}8PcCu (3g) show various kinds of columnar mesophases of Colro(P21/a), Colro(P21/a), Colro(C2/m) and Coltet.o, respectively, while [(o-C1)PhO]8PcCu (3b) shows a monotropic Colro(P2m) mesophase. Thus, we revealed that mesomorphism could be induced by these novel bulky substituents instead of using long alkyl chains, and that the mesophase structures were greatly affected by the number and position of the methoxy groups. In particular, it is very interesting that the derivatives with methoxy group(s) at the meta position(s), namely, 3c, 3e, 3f and 3g, tend to show enantiotropic mesophase(s), whereas neither the derivative with no methoxy group, 3a, nor the derivative with a methoxy group at the para position, 3d, show a mesophase.

We have synthesized a novel type of donor–acceptor liquid crystalline material, phthalocyanine-fullerene ( Pc - C 60) dyad, [m,p,m′-( C 14 O )3 PhO ]6 PcCu - C 60 (7), and the Pc precursors, [m,p,m′-( C 14 O )3 PhO ]6 PcCu - OFBA (6) and [m,p,m′-( C 14 O )3 PhO ]6 PcCu - OH (5), and established their mesomorphism by using a polarizing optical microscope, a differential scanning calorimeter and a small angle X-ray diffractometer. Very interestingly, their corresponding previous parent Pc derivative, [m,p,m′-( C 14 O )3 PhO ]8 PcCu (4), shows a very wide temperature region ca. 90°C of a bicontinuous Cub(Pn3m) mesophase, whereas the present children Pc precursors (5 and 6) and Pc- C 60 dyad 7 show not the Cub mesophase but a Colho mesophase. It is also noteworthy that the staking distance in the Colho mesophase of the Pc- C 60 dyad 7was a very big value of ca. 9.1 Å, which is the biggest in discotic liquid crystals to our best knowledge. It may be originated from the biggest excluded volume caused by thermal fluctuation of peripheral long alkoxy chains at m, m′-positions. The excluded volume caused by thermal fluctuation of the peripheral long chains is so big that the molecular shape of the Pc derivative 4 and the Pc- C 60 dyad 7 very resembles a flat pumpkin.

Under light stress, the reaction center-binding protein D1 of PSII is photo-oxidatively damaged and removed from PSII complexes by proteases located in the chloroplast. A protease considered to be responsible for degradation of the damaged D1 protein is the metalloprotease FtsH. We showed previously that the active hexameric FtsH protease is abundant at the grana margin and the grana end membranes, and this homo-complex removes the photodamaged D1 protein in the grana. Here, we showed a change in the distribution of FtsH in spinach thylakoids during excessive illumination by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and immunogold labeling of FtsH. The change in distribution of the protease was accompanied by structural changes to the thylakoids, which we detected using spinach leaves by TEM after chemical fixation of the samples. Quantitative analyses showed several characteristic changes in the structure of the thylakoids, including shrinkage of the grana, outward bending of the marginal portions of the thylakoids and an increase in the height of the grana stacks under excessive illumination. The increase in the height of the grana stacks may include swelling of the thylakoids and an increase in the partition gaps between the thylakoids. These data strongly suggest that excessive illumination induces partial unstacking of the thylakoids, which enables FtsH to access easily the photodamaged D1 protein. Finally three-dimensional tomography of the grana was recorded to observe the effect of light stress on the overall structure of the thylakoids.

The reaction center-binding D1 protein of Photosystem II is damaged by excessive light, which leads to photoinhibition of Photosystem II. The damaged D1 protein is removed immediately by specific proteases, and a metalloprotease FtsH located in the thylakoid membranes is involved in the proteolytic process. According to recent studies on the distribution and organization of the protein complexes/supercomplexes in the thylakoid membranes, the grana of higher plant chloroplasts are crowded with Photosystem II complexes and light-harvesting complexes. For the repair of the photodamaged D1 protein, the majority of the active hexameric FtsH proteases should be localized in close proximity to the Photosystem II complexes. The unstacking of the grana may increase the area of the grana margin and facilitate easier access of the FtsH proteases to the damaged D1 protein. These results suggest that the structural changes of the thylakoid membranes by light stress increase the mobility of the membrane proteins and support the quality control of Photosystem II.

Aquaculture and hatchery industries are in need of effective control methods to reduce the risk of spreading aquatic invasive species, such as the Asian clam Corbicula fluminea, through aquaculture and hatchery activities. The planktonic nature of Asian clam veligers enables this life stage to enter water-based infrastructure undetected, including hatchery trucks used to stock fish. Once in hatchery trucks, veligers can disperse overland and establish in previously uninvaded habitats. As a result, there is a need to develop techniques that result in veliger mortality but do not harm fish. In September 2012, we conducted laboratory trials to determine if a molluscicide (750 mg/L potassium chloride and 25 mg/L formalin) commonly used to kill zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) veligers in hatchery trucks can also effectively kill Asian clam veligers. We exposed Asian clam veligers to this molluscicide for 1, 3, and 5 h in each of two water types: deionized water and filtered lake water. We found

Degradation of the reaction center-binding D1 protein of Photosystem II is central in photoinhibition of Photosystem II. In higher plant chloroplasts, Photosystem II complexes are abundant in the grana. It has been suggested that the Photosystem II complexes containing photodamaged D1 protein migrate for their repair from the grana to the non-appressed stroma thylakoids, where the photodamaged D1 protein is degraded by a specific protease(s) such as filamentation temperature sensitive H (FtsH) protease. There are several possible ways to activate the FtsH proteases. As FtsH is a membrane-bound ATP-dependent metalloprotease, it requires ATP and zinc as essential part of its catalytic mechanism. It is also suggested that a membrane protein(s) associated with FtsH is required for modulation of the FtsH activity. Here, we propose several possible mechanisms for activation of the proteases, which depend on oligomerization of the monomer subunits. In relation to the oligomerization of FtsH subunits, we also suggest unique distribution of active FtsH hexamers on the thylakoids: hexamers of the FtsH proteases are localized near the Photosystem II complexes at the grana. Degradation of the D1 protein probably takes place in the grana rather than in the stroma thylakoids to circumvent long-distance migration of both the Photosystem II complexes containing the photodamaged D1 protein and the proteases.

The reaction center-binding D1 protein of Photosystem II is oxidatively damaged by excessive visible light or moderate heat stress. The metalloprotease FtsH has been suggested as responsible for the degradation of the D1 protein. We have analyzed the distribution and subunit structures of FtsH in spinach thylakoids and various membrane fractions derived from the thylakoids using clear native polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and Western blot analysis. FtsH was found not only in the stroma thylakoids but also in the Photosystem II-enriched grana membranes. Monomeric, dimeric, and hexameric FtsH proteases were present as major subunit structures in thylakoids, whereas only hexameric FtsH proteases were detected in Triton X-100-solubilized Photosystem II membranes. Importantly, among the membrane fractions examined, hexameric FtsH proteases were most abundant in the Photosystem II membranes. In accordance with this finding, D1 degradation took place in the Photosystem II membranes under light stress. Sucrose density gradient centrifugation analysis of thylakoids and the Photosystem II membranes solubilized with n-dodecyl-β-d-maltoside and a chemical cross-linking study of thylakoids showed localization of FtsH near the Photosystem II light-harvesting chlorophyll-protein supercomplexes in the grana. These results suggest that part of the FtsH hexamers are juxtapositioned to PSII complexes in the grana in darkness, carrying out immediate degradation of the photodamaged D1 protein under light stress.

Using isolated spinach thylakoids, we investigated the relationship between light-induced unstacking of thylakoids and damage to the D1 protein. Under light stress, thylakoids were expected to become unstacked so that the photodamaged photosystem II complexes in the grana and the proteases could move on the thylakoids for repair. Excessive light induced irreversible unstacking of thylakoids. By comparing the effects of light stress on stacked and unstacked thylakoids, photoinhibition of photosystem II was found to be more prominent in stacked thylakoids than in unstacked thylakoids. In accordance with this finding, EPR spin trapping measurements demonstrated higher production of hydroxyl radicals in stacked thylakoids than in unstacked thylakoids. We propose that unstacking of thylakoids has a crucial role in avoiding further damage to the D1 protein and facilitating degradation of the photodamaged D1 protein under light stress.

Photosystem II is vulnerable to various abiotic stresses such as strong visible light and heat. Under both stresses, the damage seems to be triggered by reactive oxygen species, and the most critical damage occurs in the reaction center-binding D1 protein. Recent progress has been made in identifying the protease involved in the degradation of the photo- or heat-damaged D1 protein, the ATP-dependent metalloprotease FtsH. Another important result has been the discovery that the damaged D1 protein aggregates with nearby polypeptides such as the D2 protein and the antenna chlorophyll-binding protein CP43. The degradation and aggregation of the D1 protein occur simultaneously, but the relationship between the two is not known. We suggest that phosphorylation and dephosphorylation of the D1 protein, as well as the binding of the extrinsic PsbO protein to Photosystem II, play regulatory roles in directing the damaged D1 protein to the two alternative pathways.

For bioremediation of organically enriched sediment deposited below fish farms, the extremely high potential for population growth of a deposit-feeding polychaete, Capitella sp. I, in the organically enriched sediment, and the effect on decomposition of organic matter in the sediment, were examined. A mass-culturing technique was conducted for this species. Bioremediation experiments were conducted on the organically enriched sediment in a fish farm in Kusuura Bay, Japan in 2003–2006. Approximately 1.7 million individuals of the worms were placed on the sediment below one net pen in December 2003, 9.3 million individuals in November 2004, and 2.2 million individuals in November 2005. After the worms were spread on the sediment, they rapidly increased in number and reached the highest densities of approximately 134 000 inds/m2 in February 2004, 527 000 inds/m2 in March 2005 and 103 000 inds/m2 in January 2006. In the process of rapid population growth, the decomposition of the organic matter of the sediment was enhanced markedly. Our results demonstrate that the promotion of population growth by spreading cultured colonies of Capitella can enhance the decomposition rate of organic matter markedly in organically enriched sediment below fish farms. This method is promising for minimization of the negative effects of fish farms.

In chloroplasts, a three-dimensional network of thylakoid membranes is formed by stacked grana and interconnecting stroma thylakoids. The grana are crowded with photosynthetic proteins, where PSII-light harvesting complex II (LHCII) supercomplexes often show semi-crystalline arrays for efficient energy trapping, transfer and use. Although light is essential for photosynthesis, PSII is damaged by reactive oxygen species that are generated from primary photochemical reactions when plants are exposed to excess light. Because PSII complexes are embedded in the lipid bilayers of thylakoid membranes, their functions are affected by the conditions of the lipids. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spin trapping measurements showed that singlet oxygen was formed through peroxidation of thylakoid lipids, suggesting that lipid peroxidation can damage proteins, including the D1 protein. After photodamage, PSII is restored by a specific repair system in thylakoid membranes. In the PSII repair cycle, phosphorylation and dephosphorylation of the PSII proteins control the timing of PSII disassembly and subsequent degradation of the D1 protein. Under light stress, stacked grana turn into unstacked thylakoids with bent grana margins. These structural changes may be closely linked to the mechanisms of the PSII repair cycle because PSII can move more easily from the grana core to the stroma thylakoids through an expanded stromal gap between each thylakoid. Thus, plants modulate the structure of thylakoid membranes under high light to carry out efficient PSII repair. This review focuses on the behavior of the PSII complex and the active role of structural changes to thylakoid membranes under light stress.

When spinach thylakoids were subjected to moderate heat stress (40 degrees C for 30 min), oxygen evolution was inhibited, and cleavage of the reaction center-binding protein D1 of photosystem II took place, producing 23-kDa N-terminal fragments. The D1 cleavage was greatly facilitated by the addition of 0.15 mM ZnCl2 and 1 mM ATP and was completely inhibited by 1 mM EDTA, indicating the participation of an ATP-dependent metalloprotease(s) in the D1 cleavage. Herbicides 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethyl urea, bromoxynil, and ioxynil, all of which bind to the Q(B) site, inhibited the D1 cleavage, suggesting that the DE-loop of the D1 protein is the heat-sensitive cleavage site. We solubilized the protease by treating the thylakoids with 2 M KSCN and detected a protease activity in the supernatant by gelatin activity gel electrophoresis in the 70-80-kDa region. The antibodies against tobacco FtsH and Arabidopsis FtsH2 reacted with a 70-80-kDa band of the KSCN-solubilized fraction, which suggests the presence of FtsH in the fraction. In accordance with this finding, we identified the homolog to Arabidopsis FtsH8 in the 70-80-kDa region by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass analysis of the thylakoids. The KSCN-solubilized fraction was successively reconstituted with thylakoids to show heat-induced cleavage of the D1 protein and production of the D1 fragment. These results strongly suggest that an FtsH protease(s) is involved in the primary cleavage of the D1 protein under moderate heat stress.

A microscopic bubble generating system (MBGS) has been developed to control dissolved oxygen (DO) levels suitable for fish farming. The MBGS has been tested to confirm its capability in net pens. Water conditions in a fish farm were monitored every two hours from June to October 2004 by setting an online vertical profiling system (OVPS) close to the net pen. DO in the net pen water decreased to physiologically stressful levels for the fish during the night (4.84–5.51 mg/L), while the DO was kept in saturated conditions during the day, due to oxygen supply from phytoplankton. The MBGS was operated from the evening to the morning of the next day for 16 h, to successfully create DO-saturated conditions in the net pen water at night. Background Oviposition-site choice is an essential component of the life history of all mosquito species. According to the oviposition-preference offspring-performance (P-P) hypothesis, if optimizing offspring performance and fitness ensures high overall reproductive fitness for a given species, the female should accurately assess details of the heterogeneous environment and lay her eggs preferentially in sites with conditions more suitable to offspring. Methods We empirically tested the P-P hypothesis using the mosquito species Aedes albopictus by artificially manipulating two habitat conditions: diet (measured as mg of food added to a container) and conspecific density (CD; number of pre-existing larvae of the same species). Immature development (larval mortality, development time to pupation and time to emergence) and fitness (measured as wing length) were monitored from first instar through adult emergence using a factorial experimental design over two ascending gradients of diet (2.0, 3.6, 7.2 and 20 mg food/300 ml water) and CD (0, 20, 40 and 80 larvae/300 ml water). Treatments that exerted the most contrasting values of larval performance were recreated in a second experiment consisting of single-female oviposition site selection assay. Results Development time decreased as food concentration increased, except from 7.2 mg to 20.0 mg (Two-Way CR ANOVA Post-Hoc test, P > 0.1). Development time decreased also as conspecific density increased from zero to 80 larvae (Two-Way CR ANOVA Post-Hoc test, P ). Combined, these results support the role of density-dependent competition for resources as a limiting factor for mosquito larval performance. Oviposition assays indicated that female mosquitoes select for larval habitats with conspecifics and that larval density was more important than diet in driving selection for oviposition sites. Conclusions This study supports predictions of the P-P hypothesis and provides a mechanistic understanding of the underlying factors driving mosquito oviposition site selection.

In this chapter, we describe the methods for assaying photoinhibition and heat inhibition of photosystem II in higher plant materials.

This is the third in a series of investigations of the interactional styles of Japanese and Americans. A series of semistructured interviews was used to identify critical cultural variables affecting the forms of apologies in both countries. In so far as possible these were incorporated into a Form of Apology Questionnaire. This instrument, in random and ordered forms, proved to be a highly reliable instrument for assessing such behavior in the two cultures. Japanese and Americans clearly differed in their manner of coping with social situations in which one person, consciously or unconsciously, harmed another: the Japanese preferring to apologize directly, without explaining their actions, employed a wider range of apologies and adapted more to the status of their partners; the Americans also preferred to apologize directly, but more often offered explanations to justify their acts and adapted their manner of apologizing less to the status to their partners. These differences in communicative style appear to reflect deeper cultural dynamics and psychic differences in the structure of the personality in the two countries.

Moderate heat stress (40 °C, 30 min) on spinach thylakoids induced cleavage of the D1 protein, producing an N-terminal 23-kDa fragment, a C-terminal 9-kDa fragment, and aggregation of the D1 protein. A homologue of Arabidopsis FtsH2 protease, which is responsible for degradation of the damaged D1 protein, was abundant in the stroma thylakoids. Two processes occurred in the thylakoids in response to heat stress: dephosphorylation of the D1 protein in the stroma thylakoids, and aggregation of the phosphorylated D1 protein in the grana. Heat stress also induced the release of the extrinsic PsbO, P and Q proteins from Photosystem II, which affected D1 degradation and aggregation significantly. The cleavage and aggregation of the D1 protein appear to be two alternative processes influenced by protein phosphorylation/dephosphorylation, distribution of FtsH, and intactness of the thylakoids.

When spinach thylakoids were subjected to moderate heat stress (40 degrees C for 30 min), oxygen evolution was inhibited, and cleavage of the reaction center-binding protein D1 of photosystem II took place, producing 23-kDa N-terminal fragments. The D1 cleavage was greatly facilitated by the addition of 0.15 mM ZnCl2 and 1 mM ATP and was completely inhibited by 1 mM EDTA, indicating the participation of an ATP-dependent metalloprotease(s) in the D1 cleavage. Herbicides 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethyl urea, bromoxynil, and ioxynil, all of which bind to the Q(B) site, inhibited the D1 cleavage, suggesting that the DE-loop of the D1 protein is the heat-sensitive cleavage site. We solubilized the protease by treating the thylakoids with 2 M KSCN and detected a protease activity in the supernatant by gelatin activity gel electrophoresis in the 70-80-kDa region. The antibodies against tobacco FtsH and Arabidopsis FtsH2 reacted with a 70-80-kDa band of the KSCN-solubilized fraction, which suggests the presence of FtsH in the fraction. In accordance with this finding, we identified the homolog to Arabidopsis FtsH8 in the 70-80-kDa region by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass analysis of the thylakoids. The KSCN-solubilized fraction was successively reconstituted with thylakoids to show heat-induced cleavage of the D1 protein and production of the D1 fragment. These results strongly suggest that an FtsH protease(s) is involved in the primary cleavage of the D1 protein under moderate heat stress.

In our previous work, we synthesized a series of phthalocyanine-based flying-seed-like compounds, (nPh-PhO)(4)PcCu (n = 3, 2, 1 and 0 in nPh-PhO: a-d), and revealed that each of them shows a columnar liquid crystalline phase (Col(ho) or Col(rho)) from rt to an extremely high temperature near 500 degrees C. Thus, we could obtain columnar liquid crystalline phases for discotic compounds by using bulky substituents (a-d) instead of long alkyl chains. In order to further study the utility of these bulky substituents (a-d) on the induction of mesomorphism for other shaped molecules, we have synthesized novel flying-seed-like calamitic phenoxybenzoic acid derivatives, nPh-PhOBA (3a-d), and their Mitsubishi-Mark-shaped terbium complexes, (nPh-PhOBA)(3)Tb center dot mMeOH (4a-d), in this work. Very interestingly, the mesomorphism of the phenoxybenzoic aids derivatives nPh-PhOBA (n = 0-3) was induced to show a mesophase (M-x) only by the bulky substituent d (n = 0), whereas the mesomorphism of their corresponding terbium complexes (nPh-PhOBA)(3)Tb(III) (n = 0-3) was induced to show rectangular columnar (Col(r)) mesophases by the bulky substituents c and d (n = 1, 0). On the other hand, the mesomorphism of the PcCu complexes (nPh-PhOBA)(4)PcCu (n = 0-3) in our previous work was induced by all the bulky substituents a, b, c and d (n = 0-3). Thus, it becomes apparent that both calamitic and columnar mesomorphism can be induced by the substitution of bulky groups instead of long alkyl chains, and that the balance of the core size and the bulkiness of the substituents is very important to obtain mesomorphism in flying-seed-like compounds. Host use by vectors is important in understanding the transmission of zoonotic diseases, which can affect humans, wildlife and domestic animals. Here, a synthesis of host exploitation patterns by kissing-bugs, vectors of Chagas disease, is presented. For this synthesis, an extensive literature review restricted to feeding sources analysed by precipitin tests was conducted. Modern tools from community ecology and multivariate statistics were used to determine patterns of segregation in host use. Rather than innate preferences for host species, host use by kissing-bugs is influenced by the habitats they colonise. One of the major limitations of studies on kissing-bug foraging has been the exclusive focus on the dominant vector species. We propose that expanding foraging studies to consider the community of vectors will substantially increase the understanding of Chagas disease transmission ecology. Our results indicate that host accessibility is a major factor that shapes the blood-foraging patterns of kissing-bugs. Therefore, from an applied perspective, measures that are directed at disrupting the contact between humans and kissing-bugs, such as housing improvement, are among the most desirable strategies for Chagas disease control., Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Museo
