In countries that have animal husbandry tradition and are developing this, it is impossible not to underline the different local breeds. There is anatomically significant morphological and morphometric variability among these breeds, which differ from one region to another. In this study, geometric morphometry was performed in order to examine the shape variation of the mandible and to reveal the shape variations due to breed diversity in the Bardhoka (Kosova), Țurcana (Romania) and İvesi (Turkey) breed sheep. A total of 40 (10 Bardhoka, 10 Țurcana, 20 İvesi) mandibles were used and were examined shape differences for these three breeds. 2D images of the mandibles were analyzed from the lateral view 9 landmarks were used. Average shape and shape variations of the mandible were obtained for all samples. Mandible showed significant shape variation among sheep breeds and the results were statistically significant. According to the results, among the three sheep breeds in the study, the İvesi breed has the widest mandible shape distribution. While İvesi and Țurcana show a wider distribution in shape variation; The Bardhoka breed expressed a more limited variation. It can be noticed that all three breeds are morphologically and morphometrically different from each other. Bardhoka and İvesi breeds were the most different from each other in this study (p < 0.0001). It is thought that the obtained findings will contribute to future geometric morphometry studies with ruminant mandible samples.

The anatomy of the sternum in birds varies according to their habitats and type of locomotion. In particular, the carina sterni manifest different shape variations. In this study, the shape of the carina sterni was investigated by means of geometric morphometrics. Birds of different types of locomotion were used in the study: flying, swimming, and terrestrial. Ducks and chickens show a wider variety of shapes. Pigeons are the species with the least differences. The margo cranialis carinae in a turkey is the flattest compared to other species. In chickens, the apex carinae is more caudally than the base of the carina sterni. The margo cranialis of the carina sterni in ducks is concave. The differences in centroid size and shape differences between species collectively are statistically significant (p 0.0001). The most distinct shape contrast is between the duck and turkey (p: 0.0003). Form differences between the ducks and geese as well as between the chicken and turkey are statistically insignificant. There is less variation in the shape of the carina sterni among avian species representing the same type of locomotion. Although there are many comparative morphological and morphometric studies of birds, shape analysis studies revealing the interspecific differences and similarities of the sternum are very limited. Morphology of the carina sterni can be useful in taxonomic investigations.

This study aims to determine the differences in skull between Asian and golden palm civets by geometric morphometric method. The landmarks were marked on these photographs, and principal component, classical cluster and canonical variance analyses were performed. The method of geometric morphometry of the skull is a powerful tool used to differentiate the species. Fourteen and 20 homologous landmarks were marked using tpsutil and tpsdig2 programs on the frontal and palatinal directional photographs, respectively. As a result of the study, the first principal component (PC1) accounted for 33.586% on the frontal view, 41.602% on the palatinal view of the total shape differences, respectively. Distinctive differences on the frontal and palatinal view were observed in the caudal, rostrolateral and the last molars and the caudal palatine, respectively.

There is a progressive trend in the current literature in understanding the central effects of oxytocin, which besides its classical roles in parturition and lactation, seems to exert some facilitatory effects in most of the neuropsychiatric disorders. Thus, it seems that oxytocin is mainly linked to the neuropsychiatric disorders where the social component is more or less affected and it has also strong correlations with the stress-related mechanisms and hypothalamic�pituitary�adrenal (HPA) axis. In addition, the connections between oxytocin and the digestive system were previously suggested, including by some of our preliminary results, in the context of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) pathology. Also, the relations between depression and stress in the context of cortisol implications are quite well described, although various modifications of cortisol (increased, decreased or non-modified) were described in the major depression pathology. Thus, by using two research cohorts: one with major depression disorder (n = 15) and another one having both diagnosis of major depression disorder and irritable bowel syndrome in the same time (n = 15), we are showing in this report significantly increased levels of cortisol in patients with MDD and IBS, when compared with patients with MDD without IBS, while an opposite pattern was obtained by measuring the plasma level of oxytocin, where the patients with MDD and IBS had a significantly decreased concentration of oxytocin, as compared with those with MDD but without IBS.

Ti-based alloys are widely used in medical applications. When implant devices are used to reconstruct disordered bone, prevent bone resorption and enhance good bone remodeling, the Young’s modulus of implants should be close to that of the bone. To satisfy this requirement, many titanium alloys with different biocompatible elements (Zr, Ta, Mo, Si etc.) interact well with adjacent bone tissues, promoting an adequate osseointegration. Four new different alloys were obtained and investigated regarding their microstructure, mechanical, chemical and biological behavior (in vitro and in vivo evaluation), as follows: Ti20Mo7Zr15Ta, Ti20Mo7Zr15Ta0.5Si, Ti20Mo7Zr15Ta0.75Si and Ti20Mo7Zr15TaSi. 60 days after implantation, both in control and experimental rabbits, at the level of implantation gap and into the periimplant area were found the mesenchymal stem cells which differentiate into osteoblasts, then osteocytes and osteoclasts which are involved in the new bone synthesis and remodeling, the periimplant fibrous capsule being continued by newly spongy bone tissue, showing a good osseointegration of alloys. A 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay confirmed the in vitro cytocompatibility of the prepared alloys.

Background: The covert or indirect type of aggression has a risk of converting in violent acts and, considering that, it is very important to identify it in order to apply effective preventive measures. In cases of psychotic patients, the risk of becoming violent is harder to predict, as even neuter stimuli may be perceived as threat and trigger aggression. Treating all the psychiatric patients as potential aggressive subjects is not the best preventive measure as only a few of them are aggressive and this measure may further enhance the stigma on mentally ill patients. There is a current need for better understanding of covert aggression and to find objective measures, such as biological markers, that could be indicative of potential violent behavior. In this work, we try to investigate the role of cortisol and oxytocin as potential biomarkers of aggression in patients with psychosis. Material and Methods: We analyzed the level of peripheral oxytocin (pg/mL) and cortisol level (ng/mL) in 28 psychotic patients (they were not on psychotropic treatment at the moment of admission and those with substance abuse or personality disorder were excluded from the study) and correlated it with the intensity of aggression reported by the patient (overt and covert type) using the Overt Covert Aggression Inventory and the level of observed aggression of the patient in the past 7 days (rated by the health care provider) using the Modified Overt Aggression Scale. Results: We found that psychotic patients with a higher level of covert aggression had a lower level of cortisol (61.05 ± 8.04 ng/mL vs. 216.33 ± 12.6.9 ng/mL, p ˂ 0.01) and a higher level of oxytocin (102.87 ± 39.26 vs. 70.01 ± 25.07, p = 0.01) when compared with patients with a lower level of covert aggression. Furthermore, we observed significant negative correlation between cortisol and covert aggression (r = −0.676, p &lt, 0.001) and between oxytocin and covert type of aggression (r = 0.382, p = 0.04). Moreover, we found that a lower level of cortisol together with a higher level of oxytocin are significant predictors of a style of internalized manifestation of aggression, with the predictive model explaining 55% of the variant of the internalized manifestation of aggression (F (2.25) = 17.6, p &lt, 0.001, β = 0.35, R2 = 55.2). We did not find significant correlations between cortisol and overt aggression, and neither between oxytocin and overt aggression. Positive correlations were also found between the overt type of self-reported aggression and overt aggression reported by the rater (r = 0.459, p = 0.01). Conclusions: The importance of a predictive model in understanding covert aggression is imperative and the results of our study show that oxytocin and cortisol warrant to be further investigated in establishing a definitive predictive model for covert aggression.

The correlations between depression and stress are quite accepted nowadays, as well as the fact that cortisol levels could also represent fundamental risk factors for major depressive disorder. However, when it comes to the modifications of cortisol levels in depression, the results are controversial. Same goes for the cortisol modifications in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), which is a functional digestive disorder characterized by a strong biopsychological component, being highly influenced or exacerbated by stressful stimuli. Thus, in the present report we were interested in seeing if there are any serum cortisol levels variations in patients with depression and irritable bowel syndrome, by looking at cortisol modifications in two different groups of patients: a control group with major depression disorder and another study group composed by major depression disorder + IBS patients. Thus, our data presented here are suggesting that there is a significant increase in cortisol levels in the morning serum of the patients with major depression disorder + IBS, as compared to the group having only depression. The results presented here could have an important relevance in the context of managing the stress-related factors in the pathological entities described above.

Red onion (Allium cepa) is commonly used in human diet, representing an important source of flavonoids, with argued therapeutic values in humans. In animals, the tolerance to onion varies according to species and the quantity intake, carnivores being the most sensitive. The experiment aims to identify the negative potential effects in mice after the aqueous red onion extract consumption over 56 days. Similar to some long-term studies performed on other species using aqueous or alcoholic red onion extracts, for the mice of the experimental batch were registered the hepatic and renal disturbances, paraclinically and microscopically registered, which might limit the testing of the effects of the extracts from red onion on mice.

The connection between oxidative stress and ocular injuries was highly debated, given the fact that, as a result of its particular structure, the eye may have different reactions when exposed to oxidative stress and visual activity and functionality are considerable compromised. Our experimental research focused on two types of induced oxidative stress on rats (disruption of circadian rhythm and diabetes mellitus) with impact on biochemical markers of oxidative stress. We have analysed the amplitude of significant antioxidant markers correlated with each individual type of antioxidant disorder. We observed alterations of stress biomarkers for all induced types of stress, but the most relevant are associated with diabetes mellitus and light exposure.

The paper aims to investigate the health effects of red beet juice and asorubine food dyes used in mice feeding and watering, considering the common use of these food colorants as additives in human food. The investigations related to this study were performed over a 3-month period, using 30 male mice which were divided into three batches 10 mice each. The red beet juice has given to nutrients and waters a better organoleptic quality so, the weight gain of mice was registered. The same, the increase in weight of mice receiving asorubine was higher. The anatomo- and histo-pathological examinations of mice that received red beet juice do not indicate a clear toxicity of this dye. However, red beet juice should not be consumed daily and in large quantities. On the other hand, injuries induced by asorubine in liver and kidneys may be characteristic for toxicity. So, the use and consumption of asorubine as a food additive should be undertaken with caution; although this compound is more stable and does not oxidize over time, if possible replace it with natural dyes.

Metals that come into contact with the body can cause reactions in the body, so biomaterials must be tested to avoid side effects. Mo, Zr, and Ta are non-toxic elements; alloyed with titanium, they have very good biocompatibility properties and mechanical properties. The paper aims to study an original Ti20Mo7ZrxTa system (5, 10, 15 wt %) from a mechanical and in vitro biocompatibility point of view. Alloys were examined by optical microstructure, tensile strength, fractographic analysis, and in vitro assay. The obtained results indicate very good mechanical and biological properties, recommending them for future orthopedic medical applications.

Lately there are increased evidences that oxytocin may be an important mediator in several psychiatric disorders including depression and anxiety. Oxytocin system seems to be linked with several neurotransmitters important in psychiatric disorder, but also with the hypothalamic�pituitary�adrenal (HPA) axis and is also a key factor in stress regulation mechanisms. Considering the oxytocin receptor pattern of distribution both central and peripherally and the growing data concerning the disbalance of oxytocin in psychiatric disorders we may speculate that oxytocin system may be at the core of psychosomatic disturbances. Also, recent data brought to attention that oxytocin receptor is distributed throughout gastrointestinal tract. Our hypothesis of the present study was that oxytocin system is disbalanced in irritable bowel syndrome considering also the psychological component of this digestive disorder. We preliminary report here a significant decrease of serum oxytocin levels in patients with major depression disorder and irritable bowel syndrome, as compared with those with major depression disorder alone.

The neurohormone oxytocin is known to exert a special function in the regulation of social relationships throughout vertebrate taxa. Recently it has been discovered that not only within-species, but in certain cases, between-species social bonds are also mediated by the same hormone, e.g. in case of the dog�human relationship. However, despite the exponential growth of findings at the behavioural level, there are still a lot of controversies on the biochemical assessment of oxytocin in canine samples. Thus, in the current study we replicate previous findings of canine serum oxytocin increase following a positive dog�human interaction. We provide a detailed description of both the immunoassay method used as well as the behavioural protocol (including crucial time-parameters). This will serve as a base for further studies that both our group as well as others in the field will conduct.

The objective of the research is to obtain Ti20MoxSi (where x = 0, 0.5, 0.75, 1.0 wt %) alloys using the vacuum arc remelting (VAR) methods and to consider the effects of Mo and Si on physical-chemical, biological and mechanical biocompatibility. Through microstructure analysis the dendrites, grains, sub-grains, compounds have been confirmed; Mo adding determined the main β phase apparition and by increasing the Si content the dendritic microstructure was evidenced. The modulus of elasticity decreases with the amount of Si in the Ti20Mo alloys. The MTT assessment and fluorescent microscopy performed on fibroblasts and osteoblasts cells indicated a suitable cytocompatibility of the prepared alloys. Expression of osteopontin, metalloproteinases 2 and 9 (MMP2 and MMP9) in these areas into the periosteum and peri-implant highlight the bone mineralization. Mineralization and bone remodeling suggest a good biocompatibility of the implanted material with human tissue.

Several newly obtained titanium alloys were characterized in order to evaluate the biocompatibility and their possible application as implants. For improvement of the performances of the TiMo alloys compared to other alloys, silicon was added, targeting good mechanical and technological properties, avoiding the toxic effects for human body. Titanium is very used in medical applications, due to their extremely low toxicity and good chemical stability in different body fluids. Four Ti15MoxSi (where x = 0, 0.5, 0.75, 1.0 wt %), alloys were developed and investigated regarding microstructure, mechanical, chemical and biological behavior (in vitro and in vivo evaluation). By increasing the Si content from 0 to 1% wt., the mechanical properties of the Ti15Mo alloys were significantly improved. By increasing the Si content from 0 to 1% wt., the mechanical properties of the Ti15Mo alloys were significantly improved (about 50%) from 44.50 GPa to 19.81 GPa modulus of elasticity and the hardness values 361.28 to 188.52 HV. The cytocompatibility assessment on human line osteoblasts indicated good cell-material interactions and in vivo tests indicated a successful osseointegration, the surrounding newly bone being formed without any significant inflammatory reaction. Expression of osteopontin in the peri-implant area highlights the presence of osteogenesis and bone mineralization. Metalloproteinase-2 (gelatinase A) and metallopeptidase-9 (gelatinase B) overexpression in osteoblasts, osteoclasts and osteocytes represent the markers of normal bone remodeling. All these results suggest that the TiMoSi alloys are promising materials for orthopedics devices, since mechanical properties and biocompatibility offer conditions for applying them as biomaterial.

Comparative research concerning masticatory musculature in squirrel, muskrat and rabbit, take into account the emphasizing and morphofunctional interpretation of the osteomuscular particularities involved in the prehension and mastication processes. The development of the coronoid process on the muskrat and squirrel demonstrates the growing of the force when raising the mandible by increasing the action force attached to the temporal muscle, with insertion on the coronoid process. In comparison with that, in the case of rabbits, both the coronoid process and the temporal muscle are reduced. From a philogenetic point of view, it has been found that the species that have the articular condyle lowered at or under the level of the dental tables (carnivores) present a greater pressure force between the dental tables. Analyzing this aspect of the rodents taken into discussion, we noticed the lowering of the articular condyle up to the inferior molars' plane, in the case of squirrels and muskrats, but through obliquity, namely through cranial caudal and dorsoventral movement. This peculiarity is emphasized through the analysis of the angle formed by the axis of the mandible recurved branch (passing through the mandibular condyle) with the axis of the horizontal branch of the mandible, where it was noticed that along with the increase in the angle formed by the two axes, which becomes an obtuse 160 degree angle on the squirrel and 130 degrees on the muskrat, there is also a lowering of the articular condyle up to the molar level, while in the case of carnivores, the lowering of the condyle is done without the modification of the angle between the two axes, which measures approximately 90 degrees. Investigações comparativas com respeito à musculatura mastigatória do esquilo, do rato-almiscarado e do coelho buscam o realçamento e a interpretação morfo-funcional das particularidades do sistema dos músculos esqueléticos envolvido no processo de agarramento e mastigação. O desenvolvimento do processo coronoide no rato-almiscarado e no esquilo demonstra o aumento da força no levantamento da mandíbula por meio do aumento do braço da força de ação do músculo temporal com inserção sobre o processo coronoide, em comparação com os leporídeos, que têm tanto o processo coronoide como o músculo temporal mais reduzidos. Do ponto de vista filogenético, observa-se que as espécies que apresentam o côndilo articular baixado igual ou inferior ao nível das placas dentárias (carnívoros) apresentam uma força de pressão maior entre as placas dentárias. Em relação aos roedores estudados, nota-se a descida do côndilo articular perto do plano dos molares inferiores no esquilo e no rato-almiscarado, mas por meio da obliquidade, isto é, por meio do movimento do côndilo articular da borda craniana e dorsoventral. Esta particularidade evidencia-se em virtude do ângulo formado pelo eixo do ramo dobrado da mandíbula (que atravessa o côndilo mandibular) junto ao eixo do ramo horizontal da mandíbula, resultando no aumento do valor do ângulo formado pelos dois eixos, que se tornam obtusos a 160º no esquilo e a 130º no rato-almiscarado, em função da descida do côndilo articular quase ao nível do plano dos molares, em comparação com os carnívoros, nos quais a descida do côndilo realiza-se sem a modificação do ângulo formado pelos dois eixos de, aproximadamente, 90 graus.

At global level, there is a continuing concern for the research and development of alloys for medical and biomedical applications. Metallic biomaterials are used in various applications of the most important medical fields like orthopedic, dental and cardiovascular. The main metallic biomaterials used in human body are stainless steels, Co-based alloys and Ti-based alloys. Titanium and its alloys are of greater interest in medical applications because they exhibit characteristics required for implant materials, namely, good mechanical properties (less elasticity modulus than stainless steel or CoCr alloys, fatigue strength, high corrosion resistance), high biocompatibility. The aim of this review is to describe and compare the main characteristics (mechanical properties, corrosion resistance and biocompatibility) for latest research of nontoxic Ti alloys biomaterials used for medical field.
