1. THE IMPACT OF CLASSROOM OBSERVATION IN EARLY EDUCATION ON CHILDREN’S OUTCOMES

Abstract

Educational practices and all that happens in the classroom are essential to children’s learning progress and their development. Despite the importance of teachers’ educational practices, in the low- or middle-income countries the practices are hardly ever measured, partly because of a lack of access to classroom observation tools and the high costs of their administration. As a result, the present research undertook the aim to analyze the improvement of educational practices on the dimensions that are comprised in the observation tool we used: classroom climate, instruction and social and emotional skills by means of classroom observation and providing feedback using the Teach observation tool. Thus, we assume that early childhood education teachers who participate in observation and feedback processes based on the Teach observation tool develop educational practices more adapted to the children’s social and emotional and cognitive needs. The study consisted of conducting a quasi-experiment with three repeated applications of the Teach observation tool on a sample of 19 kindergarten teaching staff. The 19 kindergarten teachers were from the same kindergarten in Braşov city, Kindergarten no.11, “House of joy”. The study was carried out during the 2020-2021 school year. Following the implementation of the Teach observation tool, we can conclude that its role is to facilitate the measurement of quality in early childhood education. Teaching can be a starting point for understanding, measuring and discussing the quality of teaching practices in early childhood education, leading to improved support for teachers and ultimately better learning experiences and higher outcomes for preschoolers. Also, in the future, the Teach observation tool can provide policy makers and stakeholders with the information they need to design and implement policies and programs in early childhood education.

2. AN INNOVATIVE APPROACH TO ASSESSMENT DURING EARLY EDUCATION

Abstract

IDELA (International Development and Early Assessment of Learning) is an assessment tool developed following a three-year activity by Ivelina Borisova, from Save the Children, with the help of Vidur Chopra. It allows to evaluate the development and early education of young children (3.5-6.5 years). The assessment tool resulted after three years of verifying and modifying the instrument, in several locations in 12 different countries. The tool includes 24 items, is easy to translate and manage and presents levels of high fidelity and validity. When applied in different countries, the instrument has been adapted taking into account the feasibility of administration, the relevance of the instrument and policy at country level, as well as its applicability at international level. In Romania, the application of the instrument was made face to face during the initial evaluation of 300 children aged 3 -6 at the Kindergarten “Căsuţa Bucuriei” no. 11 from Braşov. The innovative dimension of the application was the final assessment: it was conducted in a “virtual classroom” with 230 children, but adapted to the pandemic context in which the learning took place, either in a hybrid scenario or exclusively online.

3. Training of Early Childhood Teachers to Develop Socio-Emotional Skills in Pre-Schoolers

Abstract

The article is connected with a theoretical analysis of the emotional intelligence and empirical studies of the development of emotional intelligence in the context of personal dispositions of students future psychologists (n=84). The following methods were used in the empirical study: EQ test K. Barchard, «Diagnosis of emotional intelligence» (N. Hall), «Questionnaire SVF120» (V. Yanke, G. Erdmann, adaptation N. Vodopjanova), «Methods of diagnosing viability» (S. Muddy, adaptation D. Leontiev), «Oxford Happiness Inventory», «Diagnosis of emotionality» (Suvorov, 1976), «Questionnaire Machiavellianism of the individual». Mathematical data processing and graphical representation of the results were performed using the statistical package SPSS 17.0. It is noted that the real impetus for the emergence of the concept of EI in science were the works of G. Gardner and his theory of multiple intelligences. The basic models of ЕІ and the author’s interpretation of this concept are analyzed, which leads to the conclusion: the integrated understanding of this phenomenon by psychologists is still absent, the main definition of the concept of EI is often a list and description of its components, and the main justification for its importance is a list of those areas of life where the role of EI is most obvious.

Abstract

BACKGROUND There were gaps between guidelines and practice when surgery was the only treatment for aortic stenosis (AS). OBJECTIVES This study analyzed the decision to intervene in patients with severe AS in the EORP VHD (EURObservational Research Programme Valvular Heart Disease) II survey. METHODS Among 2,152 patients with severe AS, 1,271 patients with high-gradient AS who were symptomatic fulfilled a Class I recommendation for intervention according to the 2012 European Society of Cardiology guidelines; the primary end point was the decision for intervention. RESULTS A decision not to intervene was taken in 262 patients (20.6%). In multivariate analysis, the decision not to intervene was associated with older age (odds ratio [OR]: 1.34 per 10-year increase; 95% CI: 1.11 to 1.61; P = 0.002), New York Heart Association functional classes I and II versus III (OR: 1.63; 95% CI: 1.16 to 2.30; P = 0.005), higher age adjusted Charlson comorbidity index (OR: 1.09 per 1-point increase; 95% CI: 1.01 to 1.17; P = 0.03), and a lower transaortic mean gradient (OR: 0.81 per 10-mm Hg decrease; 95% CI: 0.71 to 0.92; P < 0.001). During the study period, 346 patients (40.2%, median age 84 years, median EuroSCORE II [European System for Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation II] 3.1%) underwent transcatheter intervention and 515 (59.8%, median age 69 years, median EuroSCORE II 1.5%) underwent surgery. A decision not to intervene versus intervention was associated with lower 6-month survival (87.4%; 95% CI: 82.0 to 91.3 vs 94.6%; 95% CI: 92.8 to 95.9; P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS A decision not to intervene was taken in 1 in 5 patients with severe symptomatic AS despite a Class I recommendation for intervention and the decision was particularly associated with older age and combined comorbidities. Abstract

Although in developed countries the incidence of colorectal cancer is decreasing through the introduction of well-designed screening systems, the worrying worldwide increase of the mortality rate by colorectal neoplasm indicates the need for a thorough characterization of this pathology. Clinical, endoscopic, histopathological and immunohistochemical data provide important information for creating categories of patients that can benefit from intensive screening methods and for establishing the prognosis based on these data. Approximately 80% of the colorectal cancer develops from adenomas, which shows that early detection of premalignant lesions is an important step in reducing global incidence and mortality. Our study aims at providing information about the clinical, imaging and histopathological characterization of colorectal neoplasm and premalignant lesions. A total of 98 patients were evaluated, including 72 patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer and 26 with premalignant lesions. Patients underwent colonoscopy with biopsy specimens that were examined histopathologically. From the epidemiological data, we observe a higher incidence in men with a men/women ratio of 2/1, with a median age in colorectal cancer patients of 63.93 years. Different data on signs and symptoms were observed according to the colonoscopy location, with a slight difference between symptoms of patients with premalignant lesions compared to those diagnosed with colorectal neoplasm. Endoscopy showed that the rectum was the most frequent location, followed by the left colon, the tumor having a vegetative aspect in most cases. Histopathology confirms that the most common subtype is adenocarcinoma, described in 67 of the studied cases. The moderate differentiation degree is present in more than half of the cases.

Abstract

The paper treats the control problem of the locomotion phases in a jumping cycle of a robot. The mechanical architecture of the leg with elastic lower segment (ATHLETE MODEL) is discussed. The dynamic model of the motion in stance phase is determined. The touch-down sequence, when the elastic foot hits the ground, is discussed and the control system is analyzed for two cases: actuator as passive damper system and actuator as semi-active damper system with ground-hook damper model. The transmissibility characteristics are analyzed. An active damper with ER fluids actuator and a skyhook viscosity controller is proposed to avoid the vibrations in the mechanical structure that can disturb the evolution of the robot. The control parameters are determined by using the circle criterion. The take-off sequence conditions in the stance phase are inferred by using the energy concept.

Abstract

The paper studies the control problem of a class of hyper-redundant robots with uncertain components by using the output control. To avoid the complexity of distributed controllers, in this paper is proposed a lumped output controller. A weighted technique is used to generate a boundary output. A PD controller is proposed and an algorithm for determining the controller gains is discussed. Lyapunov techniques are used to prove the asymptotically stability of the control system. Numerical simulations and prove the efficiency of the method.

Abstract

The paper deals with the control problem of a class of hyper-redundant robots constituted by a chain of continuum segments. The main parameter, the system state, is determined by the position and velocity generalised variables. The dynamic model is studied and the constraints of the state variables and nonlinear components are proved. The observability problems are solved by an approach derived from the Luenberger observer type extended for this class of non-linear distributed models. The inequality constraints on the gravitational components allow to introduce a decoupled control system. A PD boundary control algorithm is used in order to achieve a desired shape of the arm. The stability analysis and the resulting controllers are obtained using Liapunov techniques. The exponential stability of the (error-observer) system was proved. The constraints on the observer and controller gains are analysed. Experimental tests verify the effectiveness of the presented techniques.

Abstract

Command and control system of a hyper-redundant robot is presented in this paper. Hyper-redundant robots are a new class of robots designed with a large number of joints with high degree of mobility, in order to operate in areas with restrictions. The robot presented in this paper is a hyper-redundant robot elephant trunk type with truncated cone structure. Flexible structure is made of two independent modules that drive, bending robot is made by nature. Drive block for each module consists of two stepper motors that allow bending toward the axes X and Y. The transmission and engine to convert the movement of flexible modules are achieved through a reduction gear assembly and sheaves. Each module consists of 4(5) flexible items. Each element is driven by four cables (one pair for each axis). Separate drive of each element of flexible module provides a very good control of the distribution of forces, and curvature. The control system is built on a 32-bit PIC microcontroller. Control algorithm allows the motor control by microsteps using integrated PWM voltage generator. The law of motion is given by a fuzzy algorithm which optimizes the parameters of movement. For kinematic simulation, the model of the robot was made in Solidworks CAD environment, achieving a parametric animation.

Abstract

Robot soccer competition provides an excellent opportunity for robotics research. In particular, the soccer robots must perform real-time visual recognition, navigate in a dynamic field, avoid the obstacle, collaborate with teammates, and kick the ball in the correct direction. All these tasks demand robots that are autonomous (sensing, thinking, and acting as independent creatures), efficient (functioning under time and resource constraints), cooperative (collaborating with each other robot to accomplish tasks that are beyond individual’s capabilities), and intelligent (reasoning and planing actions and perhaps learning from experience). This paper proposes a method of defining and analysing the attacking robot tasks using Petri nets. Attacking soccer robot behaviors are modeled using the generalized stochastic Petri nets. Using Petri nets allows qualitative and quantitative analysis of the task execution. Petri net model is implemented in Petri Net Toolbox under MATLAB environment. Therefore, it is validated the net topology, the evolution of (their dynamics), the structural and behavioral properties (corresponding to checking if resources usage is stable and the model have no deadlocks), as well as the stochastic performance.

The grasping control problem for a hyperredundant arm is studied. Frist, dynamic model of the arm is analyzed. The control problems are divided in the subproblems: the position control in a desired reaching area, the control of the arm around the object-load and the force control of grasping. The difficulties determined by the complexity of the non-linear integral-differential equations are avoided by using a very basic energy relationship of this system. First, the dynamic control of the arm for a desired reaching area is inferred. Then, the position controland the force control for grasping are discussed. Numerical simulation are presented.

The paper focuses on the control problem of a hyperredundant robot that performs the coil function of grasping. First, the dynamic model of a hyperredundant arm with continuum elements produced by flexible composite materials in conjunction with active-controllable electro-rheological fluids is analyzed. Secondly, both problems, i.e. the position control and the force control are approached. The difficulties determined by the complexity of the non-linear integral-differential equations are avoided by using a basic energy relationship of this system. Energy-based control laws are introduced for the position control problem. A force control method is proposed, namely the DSMC method in which the evolution of the system on the switching line by the ER fluid viscosity is controlled. Numerical simulations are also presented.

The present article propose a frequency stability criterion based on the Kahman - Yakubovich - Popov Lemma for the hyper-redundant arms with continuum element that performs the grasping function by coiling. Dynamics of the biomimetical robot during non-contact and contact operations, for the position control, is studied. An extension of the Popov criterion is developed. The P control algorithms based on SMA snake-type robot actuators are introduced. Numerical simulations and experimental results of the snake type robot motion toward an imposed target are presented.

The paper focuses on the control of a class of hyper-redundant arms with continuum elements, with boundary measuring and control. First, the dynamic model of the continuum arm is presented. The measuring systems are based on the film sensors that are placed at the terminal sub-regions of the arm. The observers are proposed in order to reconstruct the full state of the arm. A back-stepping method is used to design a boundary control algorithm. Numerical simulations of the arm motion toward an imposed position are presented. An experimental platform shows the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

Abstract

The paper focuses on hyper-redundant arms with continuum elements that perform the grasping function by coiling. First, there is concern with the dynamic model of the continuum arm for the position control during non-contact operations with the environment. A frequency stability criterion based on the Kahman - Yakubovich - Popov Lemma and P and PD control algorithms is proposed. Then, the grasping control of the arm in contact with a load is analyzed. The dynamics of the system are discussed and an extension of the Popov criterion is endorsed. The control algorithms based on SMA actuators are introduced. Numerical simulations and experimental results of the arm motion toward an imposed target are presented.

Abstract

Laser therapy in open angle glaucomas represents an important step in their management, a topic of intense research during the second part of the XXth century. The initial enthousiasm generated by spectacular results obtained with minimal risks and complications, was soon tampered by their short survival. Nowadays, laser therapy is considered a second or third line therapy, alternative to surgery or intermediate stage between medication and surgery. There are selected cases in which laser therapy may be first line treatment in open angle glaucomas.

This function is often met in the animal world as the elephant's trunk or octopus tentacle. First, the dynamic model in 3D-space is developed. The equations that describe the motion of the arm that carries a load by coiling are inferred. The stability of the motion is discussed. Abstract

Robot soccer is a challenging platform for multi-agent research, involving topics such as real-time image processing and control, robot path planning, obstacle avoidance and machine learning. The system consists of a supervisory controller, and controllers for defending and goalkeeping robots. These controllers are designed using Petri net. The robot soccer game presents an uncertain and dynamic environment for cooperating agents. Dynamic role switching and formation control are crucial for a successful game. A soccer robot has to take an appropriate decision based on environment situation. With the role of a robot fixed as goalkeeper, the supervisor, according to the game situation, assigns the role of attacking or defending to the other robots and then respective controllers control the robots. The Petri net model is implemented in Petri net toolbox under MATLAB environment.

Abstract

The paper focuses on the control problem of a hyperredundant robot that performs the coil function of grasping. First, the dynamic model of a hyperredundant arm with continuum elements produced by flexible composite materials in conjunction with active-controllable electro-rheological fluids is analyzed. Secondly, both problems, i.e. the position control and the force control are approached. The difficulties determined by the complexity of the non-linear integral-differential equations are avoided by using a basic energy relationship of this system. Energy-based control laws are introduced for the position control problem. A force control method is proposed, namely the DSMC method in which the evolution of the system on the switching line by the ER fluid viscosity is controlled. Numerical simulations are also presented.
