The rehabilitation of mine waste dumps is a critical environmental challenge, particularly in areas like Uricani, Romania, where such sites are often characterized by hazardous conditions and poor ecological recovery. This study addresses the need for efficient, low-cost solutions for land reclamation by employing UAV photogrammetry and GIS spatial analysis to assess the potential for afforestation with Robinia pseudoacacia L., a species known for its soil stabilization and ecological benefits. Using UAV technology, high-resolution digital terrain models and orthophotos were generated, with an RMSE of 0.086 m, demonstrating the accuracy and efficiency of this method for large-scale landscape initiatives. GIS spatial analysis was performed to create six key terrain maps and four pedoclimatic factor maps, essential for evaluating the site’s suitability for ecological restoration. The pilot afforestation project, which involved planting R. pseudoacacia, achieved a 75% survival rate after four years, suggesting that the species can thrive under the site’s conditions. The landscape design proposal incorporates recreational spaces aimed at benefiting the local community and attracting tourism, thereby contributing to the area’s economic and cultural revitalization. The interdisciplinary integration of UAV surveying, GIS, and landscape design highlights the cost-effectiveness and interdisciplinary nature of this approach, offering a sustainable model for mine waste dump reclamation and future ecological restoration projects.

The purpose of coatings is to protect or enhance the functionality of the substrate material, irrespective of the field in which the material was designed. The use of coatings in medicine is rapidly expanding with the objective of enhancing the osseointegration ability of metallic materials such as titanium. The aim of this study was to obtain biomimetic hydroxyapatite (HAp)-based coatings on titanium by using the pulsed galvanostatic method. The morphology of the HAp-based coatings revealed the presence of very thin and wide plate-like crystals, grown perpendicular to the Ti substrate, while the chemical composition highlighted a Ca/P ratio of 1.66, which is close to that of stoichiometric HAp (1.67). The main phases and chemical bonds identified confirmed the presence of the HAp phase in the developed coatings. A roughness of 228 nm and a contact angle of approx. 17° were obtained for the HAp coatings, highlighting a hydrophilic character. In terms of biomineralization and electrochemical behavior, it was shown that the HAp coatings have significantly enhanced the titanium properties. Finally, the in vitro cell tests carried out with human mesenchymal stem cells showed that the Ti samples coated with HAp have increased cell viability, extracellular matrix, and Ca intracellular deposition when compared with the uncoated Ti, indicating the beneficial effect.

This study investigates the effects of aluminum and nitrogen content on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and tribological performance of high-entropy coatings based on (TiCrAlxNbY)Ny systems. Using a hybrid magnetron sputtering technique, both metallic and nitride coatings were synthesized and evaluated. Increasing the aluminum concentration led to a transition from a crystalline to a nanocrystalline and nearly amorphous (NC/A) structure, with the TiAl0.5CrNbY sample (11.8% Al) exhibiting the best balance of hardness (6.8 GPa), elastic modulus (87.1 GPa), and coefficient of friction (0.64). The addition of nitrogen further enhanced these properties, transitioning the coatings to a denser fine-grained FCC structure. The HN2 sample (45.8% nitrogen) displayed the highest hardness (21.8 GPa) but increased brittleness, while the HN1 sample (32.9% nitrogen) provided an optimal balance of hardness (14.3 GPa), elastic modulus (127.5 GPa), coefficient of friction (0.60), and wear resistance (21.2 × 10−6 mm3/Nm). Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy revealed improved corrosion resistance for the HN1 sample due to its dense microstructure. Overall, the (TiAl0.5CrNbY)N0.5 coating achieved the best performance for friction applications, such as break and clutch systems, requiring high coefficients of friction, high wear resistance, and durability.

Background/Objectives: HMG-CoA reductase is an enzyme that regulates the initial stage of cholesterol synthesis, and its inhibitors are widely used in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases. Methods: We have created a set of quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) models for human HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors using nested cross-validation as the primary validation method. To develop the QSAR models, we employed various machine learning regression algorithms, feature selection methods, and fingerprints or descriptor datasets. Results: We built and evaluated a total of 300 models, selecting 21 that demonstrated good performance (coefficient of determination, R2 ≥ 0.70 or concordance correlation coefficient, CCC ≥ 0.85). Six of these top-performing models met both performance criteria and were used to construct five ensemble models. We identified the descriptors most important in explaining HMG-CoA inhibition for each of the six best-performing models. We used the top models to search through over 220,000 chemical compounds from a large database (ZINC 15) for potential new inhibitors. Only a small fraction (237 out of approximately 220,000 compounds) had reliable predictions with mean pIC50 values ≥ 8 (IC50 values ≤ 10 nM). Our svm-based ensemble model predicted IC50 values < 10 nM for roughly 0.08% of the screened compounds. We have also illustrated the potential applications of these QSAR models in understanding the cholesterol-lowering activities of herbal extracts, such as those reported for an extract prepared from the Iris × germanica rhizome. Conclusions: Our QSAR models can accurately predict human HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, having the potential to accelerate the discovery of novel cholesterol-lowering agents and may also be applied to understand the mechanisms underlying the reported cholesterol-lowering activities of herbal extracts.

A complex aggregate of about 24 species, A. millefolium L. agg. (Asteraceae) is one of the medicinal plants with a long tradition of use, dating back from ancient times. This paper attempts to answer to three main questions: What are the A. millefolium products available in pharmacy (on the Romanian market) that a patient might be interested in? What are their potential uses (based on clinical evidence and officially recognized traditional use in the European Union) and the relevant posology? What knowledge do we have about the safety of those products?

The woodworking applications are a fast-growing field that aims to create advanced coatings with superior wear resistance, reduced friction, and robust corrosion protection. Chromium silicon carbonitride (CrSiCN) coatings have emerged as a promising solution that offers a unique combination of properties ideal for various industrial applications. The C/N ratio significantly influences the coatings' mechanical and tribological properties. By optimizing the C/N ratio, this research aims to reveal new insights for CrSiCN coatings, enhancing their application in environments that require durability, efficiency, and longevity. In this paper, the effect of the C/N ratio on the structural, mechanical, and corrosion resistance of CrSiCN coatings deposited by cathodic arc evaporation on different steel substrates was studied. The main purpose was to enhance the mechanical and anticorrosion properties of the CrSiCN coatings and to select the optimum parameters for the deposition of layers with superior properties. The results showed that the final properties can be tailored by choosing specific deposition conditions. In this case, the C/N ratio proved to be critical since coatings with higher carbon content presented enhanced corrosion resistance, being able to withstand operating conditions similar to real-life.

The current study’s aim is to obtain quaternary ZrCuCa based thin films using a physical vapor deposition method (PVD) - cathodic arc approach – in order to improve the surface properties of 316L stainless steel and Ti6Al4V implantable materials. The developed ZrCuCa-based layers could be potential candidates in the medical industry if they are able to combine their exceptional mechanical properties with the corrosion resistance of amorphous metallic glasses. Furthermore, addition of Mo, Mg, Si, and Sr was taken into consideration for the ZrCuCa structure and the resulted quaternary systems were analysed in detail, through electrochemical tests and bioactivity assay, which were carried out in synthetic body fluid (SBF) at human body temperature (37 °C). Surface morphology and roughness of the specimens before and after the tests were also evaluated. The results showed that regardless the substrate type, the roughness of the surface has increased for all coatings from 19 nm for 316L, and 50 nm for Ti6Al4V, to 2000 nm). The adhesion of obtained coatings was reached from 8 N to 18, the coatings on Ti6Al4V alloy was found to be from 12 N to 18 N, while on 316L steel was from 8 N to 15 N, indicating that the coatings deposited on Ti alloy have a better adhesion. The corrosion current density parameter for ZrCuCaMo and ZrCuCaMg sjowe the lowest value (316L: 21.99 µA/cm2 and 11.37 µA/cm2; Ti6Al4V: 1.62 µA/cm2 and 13.37 µA/cm2), indicating the best corrosion resistance. The mass evolution of the coatings deposited on 316L was ranged from the −0.47 mg to 1.37 mg, while for those deposited on Ti6Al4V, the values were ranged from −0.08 mg to 2.66 mg, indicating a degradation and biomineralization process, respectively. In conclusion, the electrochemical studies and bioactivity experiments demonstrated that the suggested coatings improve the substrate’s behaviour in simulated conditions, highlighting their potential as biomaterials.

It has been documented that patients with mental or physical disabilities can benefit from being placed within the setting of a natural environment. Consequently, the concept of creating spaces that can enhance health preservation or patient recovery, while also augmenting environmental and aesthetic value, has merged as a contemporary discourse. Green areas around hospitals can offer a great opportunity to incorporate healing gardens to benefit their patients and not only. The aim of this paper is to propose a design for a sensory-therapeutic garden based on key principles derived from selected academic literature, focusing on the application of these principles in a healthcare setting in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. The design was informed also by onsite data collection and analysis, and it aims to create a healing landscape that addresses the needs of patients, healthcare providers, and visitors. This study seeks to augment the discourse in the field by demonstrating the practical application of key therapeutic garden design principles in a specific context and how these principles impacted the design process.

Biomaterials are an important and integrated part of modern medicine, and their development and improvement are essential. The fundamental requirement of a biomaterial is found to be in its interaction with the surrounding environment, with which it must coexist. The aim of this study was to assess the biological characteristics of hydroxyapatite (HAp)-based coatings doped with Mg and Zn ions obtained by the pulsed galvanostatic electrochemical method on the surface of pure titanium (cp-Ti) functionalized with titanium dioxide nanotubes (NTs TiO2) obtained by anodic oxidation. The obtained results highlighted that the addition of Zn or Mg into the HAp structure enhances the in vitro response of the cp-Ti surface functionalized with NT TiO2. The contact angle and surface free energy showed that all the developed surfaces have a hydrophilic character in comparison with the cp-Ti surface. The HAp-based coatings doped with Zn registered superior values than the ones with Mg, in terms of biomineralization, electrochemical behavior, and cell interaction. Overall, it can be said that the addition of Mg or Zn can enhance the in vitro behavior of the HAp-based coatings in accordance with clinical requirements. Antibacterial tests showed that the proposed HAp-Mg coatings had no efficiency against Escherichia coli, while the HAp-Zn coatings registered the highest antibacterial efficiency.

With a widespread distribution throughout the Northern Hemisphere and 11 genera, Pinaceae is the largest family of Gymnosperms in the world. Essential oils are an important chemotaxonomic marker for the species of this family, although the degree of chemical and biological investigation has not been the same for all genera. Essential oils from Abies and Cedrus (from the abietoid clade) or Pinus and Picea (from the pinoid clade) have been more extensively investigated with respect to their chemical composition and biological or pharmacological properties, including their antioxidant effects. Instead, essential oils from the other genera of the family have been less explored in this respect or even have not been investigated at all. This is a narrative review looking into the knowledge acquired up to date, the variability and limitations of the current methods used to estimate antioxidant effects, and multiple comparisons between EOs obtained from different genera, species, and plant parts, as well as potential applications and future directions of research and utilization of essential oils derived from Pinaceae species.

Multi-component high-entropy (TiCrAl0.5NbCu)CxNy coatings targeting applications requiring medium-to-high friction and wear-resistant surfaces were fabricated through the co-sputtering of elemental targets in an Ar + CH4 + N2 reactive atmosphere using a hybrid HiPIMS/DCMS technique. Two sets of samples were fabricated: (a) (TiCrAl0.5NbCu)Cx high-entropy carbides (HEC) and (b) (TiCrAl0.5NbCu)CxN0.13 high-entropy carbonitrides (HECN), 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.48. The structural, mechanical, tribological, and corrosion resistance properties were thoroughly investigated. The metallic sample exhibits a single BCC structure that changes to FCC via an intermediary amorphous phase through the addition of C or N to the content of the films. The crystallinity of the FCC phases is enhanced and the density of the films decreases down to 5.5 g/cm3 through increasing the carbon fraction up to 48%. The highest hardness of about 16.9 GPa and the lowest wear rate of about 5.5 × 10−6 mm3/Nm are presented by the samples with the largest carbon content, x = 0.48. We found a very good agreement between the evolution of H/E and H3/E2 parameters with carbon content and the tribological behavior of the coatings. The best corrosion resistance was presented by the low-carbon carbonitride samples, showing a charge transfer resistivity of about 3 × 108 Ω∙cm, which is more than three times larger than that of the metallic HEA. The best tribological characteristics for envisioned application were presented by (TiCrAl0.5NbCu)C0.3N0.13, showing a coefficient of friction of 0.43 and a wear rate of about 7.7 × 10−6 mm3/Nm.

The use of MAPLE synthesized thin films based on BG and VD3 for improving the osseointegration and corrosion protection of Ti-like implant surfaces is reported. The distribution of chemical elements and functional groups was shown by FTIR spectrometry; the stoichiometry and chemical functional integrity of thin films after MAPLE deposition was preserved, optimal results being revealed especially for the BG+VD3_025 samples. The morphology and topography were examined by SEM and AFM, and revealed surfaces with many irregularities, favoring a good adhesion of cells. The thin films’ cytotoxicity and biocompatibility were evaluated in vitro at the morphological, biochemical, and molecular level. Following incubation with HDF cells, BG57+VD3_ 025 thin films showed the best degree of biocompatibility, as illustrated by the viability assay values. According to the LDH investigation, all tested samples had higher values compared to the unstimulated cells. The evaluation of cell morphology was performed by fluorescence microscopy following cultivation of HDF cells on the obtained thin films. The cultivation of HDF’s on the thin films did not induce major cellular changes. Cells cultured on the BG57+VD3_025 sample had similar morphology to that of unstimulated control cells. The inflammatory profile of human cells cultured on thin films obtained by MAPLE was analyzed by the ELISA technique. It was observed that the thin films did not change the pro- and anti-inflammatory profile of the HDF cells, the IL-6 and IL-10 levels being similar to those of the control sample. The wettability of the MAPLE thin films was investigated by the sessile drop method. A contact angle of 54.65° was measured for the sample coated with BG57+VD3_025. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy gave a valuable insight into the electrochemical reactions occurring on the surface.

Abies alba Mill. (Pinaceae), silver fir, is a widespread gymnosperm species in Europe, important for its ecological, economic, social, and cultural significance, as well as for its use for food and bioremediation purposes. The various parts of the plant (leaves, branches, cones, wood, bark) are also of pharmaceutical interest due to their composition of active compounds. In the last three decades, an impressive amount of research has been dedicated to this species. The variability of the chemical composition of essential oils (whether they come from leaves, oleoresin from branches, or other parts of the plant) is impressive, even in the case of specimens collected from the same geographical area. For essential oils prepared from needles or twigs and branches, limonene, β-pinene, α-pinene, camphene, β-phellandrene, and bornyl acetate are the leading compounds, although their wide variations seem to correspond to multiple chemotypes. Both bark and wood are rich in lignans and phenolic compounds. Matairesinol is apparently the dominant lignan in bark, and secoisolariciresinol and lariciresinol are the dominant ones in wood samples. Pharmacological studies with promising results have evaluated the antioxidant effect (mainly due to essential oils), but also the antimicrobial, antitumor, probiotic, antidiabetic, anti-steatosis, and anti-psoriatic activities.

Within the next few years climate change is likely to become a major concern for mankind. In addition, the current electronic components shortage crisis has led to an urgent need for alternative solutions in the main industry sectors (the raw materials, manufacturing, and construction industries). The current trends of research are focused on developing smart materials with functional properties, using abundant raw materials. The energy saving efforts are sustained in the glazing industries by several approaches based on dielectric-metal-dielectric multilayer structures. The use of silver to achieve a high reflectivity in near-infrared spectral range has been proposed and is already adopted as a commercially available solution. This work is focused on developing a transparent heat reflector (THR) with prefigured optical properties, using copper as a reflective layer, a material that is more abundant and cheaper than silver. The conductive copper layers obtained by the High Power Impulse Magnetron Sputtering (HiPIMS) method were interposed between two silicon nitride layers deposited by the Radio-Frequency Magnetron Sputtering (RFMS) technique. The structural, optical, and elemental composition of monolayers was investigated, qualifying each individual material for use in the multilayer structure. The time stability of films deposited on microscope glass substrates was also investigated, as an important criterion for the selection of monolayers. The obtained results revealed that the SiNx/Cu/SiNx with the Cu layer deposited by using a negative substrate bias of −100 V showed the most stable behavior over time. Optical modeling was performed to design a THR multilayer structure, which was successfully obtained experimentally. A maximum optical transparency as high as 75% in the visible range and a reflectivity of ~ 85% in near infrared spectral interval was confirmed for the experimentally obtained multilayer structures.

The demand for transparent conductive coatings has increased over recent years, leading to the development of various technical solutions. One of the approaches is to use metallic coatings very close to their coalescence thickness, so that a good compromise between transparency and conductivity is obtained. In this contribution, a combination of two elements with high potential in this field is used, namely silver and copper. The continuity of silver films on a dielectric transparent substrate is significantly improved by the addition of a copper seed layer that promotes the formation of a continuous layer at smaller effective thicknesses. Two distinct deposition processes are used for the deposition of the two materials, namely HiPIMS (High Power Impulse magnetron sputtering) for copper and DC sputtering for silver. The use of HiPIMS enables a better control of the structure and quantity of deposited material, allowing us to deposit a very small amount of material. The mono-element coatings are characterized from the optical and electrical point of view, and then mixed to form a structure with better transparency, up to 80% in the visible spectrum, good electrical properties, resistivity of ~2 × 10−5 (Ω × cm), and significantly lower surface roughness, down to 0.2 nm.

Coatings are an attractive and challenging selection for improving the bioperformance of metallic devices. Composite materials based on bioglass/antibiotic/polymer are herein proposed as multifunctional thin films for hard tissue implants. We deposited a thin layer of the polymeric material by matrix-assisted pulsed laser evaporation—MAPLE onto Ti substrates. A second layer consisting of bioglass + antibiotic was applied by MAPLE onto the initial thin film. The antimicrobial activity of MAPLE-deposited thin films was evaluated on Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa standard strains. The biocompatibility of obtained thin films was assessed on mouse osteoblast-like cells. The results of our study revealed that the laser-deposited coatings are biocompatible and resistant to microbial colonization and biofilm formation. Accordingly, they can be considered viable candidates for biomedical devices and contact surfaces that would otherwise be amenable to contact transmission.

The use of thin metallic layers at the thickness limit where transparency or spectral selectivity are achieved is gaining increased interest. The use of cheap and abundant materials is desirable in the attempt to avoid environment or economical costs. The use of Cu as a replacement for Ag as a heat reflector is one of the solutions that can be employed. The stability over time is a known issue, copper being prone to atmospheric oxidation and degradation. In this contribution, the stability of Cu obtained by magnetron sputtering is investigated, using both DC and HiPIMS processes for obtaining the Cu thin films. The bias voltage is used to obtain thin films with different properties, their time stability being investigated through the variation of spectrophotometric curves. The best performing thin films are evaluated in theoretical heat reflector structures, using SiNx of different qualities as dielectric layers to form the dielectric/metal/dielectric structure.

(1) Background: The mussel (Mytilus edulis, Mytilus galloprovincialis) is the most widespread lamellibranch mollusk, being fished on all coasts of the European seas. Mussels are also widely grown in Japan, China, and Spain, especially for food purposes. This paper shows an original technique for mussel shell processing for preparation of calcium salts, such as calcium levulinate. This process involves synthesis of calcium levulinate by treatment of Mytilus galloprovincialis shells with levulinic acid. The advantage of mussel shell utilization results in more straightforward qualitative composition. Thus, the weight of the mineral component lies with calcium carbonate, which can be used for extraction of pharmaceutical preparations. (2) Methods: Shell powder was first deproteinized by calcination, then the mineral part was treated with levulinic acid. The problem of shells generally resulting from the industrialization of marine molluscs creates enough shortcomings, if one only mentions storage and handling. One of the solutions proposed by us is the capitalization of calcium from shells in the pharmaceutical industry. (3) Results: The toxicity of calcium levulinate synthesized from the mussel shells was evaluated by the method known in the scientific literature as the Constantinescu phytobiological method (using wheat kernels, Triticum vulgare Mill). Acute toxicity of calcium levulinate was evaluated; the experiments showed the low toxicity of calcium levulinate. (4) Conclusion: The experimental results highlighted calcium as the predominant element in the composition of mussel shells, which strengthens the argument of capitalizing the shells as an important natural source of calcium.

In this study, several wall painting fragments discovered in the Roman baths from the archeological site Alburnus Maior (Roşia Montană, Romania) were analyzed with the aim to investigate the material composition of both plasters and pictorial layers. Dated from the beginning of the second century AD, these rare findings stand among the oldest examples of preserved decorative polychrome paintings on plaster excavated thus far in the former territory of the Roman province of Dacia. A non-destructive multi-analytical approach based on complementary techniques was considered: Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV fluorescence, and hyperspectral imaging (HSI). The obtained results highlight a common Roman color palette mainly based on naturally occurring earth pigments. Red ochre, yellow ochre, manganese-rich ochres/wads, carbon black, and calcite were identified. A traditional two-layer sequence of plasters was found—arriccio (based on lime and siliceous sands), and intonaco (pure lime). The presence of an organic protein binder, identified via FTIR analysis, and sustained by combined imaging documentation, indicates that the pigments were applied a secco. The obtained results are discussed in relation to previous published data, and they can be considered as valuable archeological indicators that contribute to the understanding of the painting techniques and the materials used in the Roman provinces.

A series of new pyrrole derivatives were designed as chemical analogs of the 1,4-dihydropyridines drugs in order to develop future new calcium channel blockers. The new tri- and tetra-substituted N-arylpyrroles were synthesized by the one-pot reaction of 1-methyl-3-cyanomethyl benzimidazolium bromide with substituted alkynes having at least one electron-withdrawing substituent, in 1,2-epoxybutane, acting both as the solvent and reagent to generate the corresponding benzimidazolium N3-ylide. The structural characterization of the new substituted pyrroles was based on IR, NMR spectroscopy as well as on single crystal X-ray analysis. The toxicity of the new compounds was assessed on the plant cell using Triticum aestivum L. species and on the animal cell using Artemia franciscana Kellogg and Daphnia magna Straus crustaceans. The compounds showed minimal phytotoxicity on Triticum rootlets and virtually no acute toxicity on Artemia nauplii, while on Daphnia magna, it induced moderate to high toxicity, similar to nifedipine. Our research indicates that the newly synthetized pyrrole derivatives are promising molecules with biological activity and low acute toxicity.

The goal of this study was to validate an alternative method for determining in vivo acute toxicity using vegetal material instead of laboratory animals, starting from the phytobiological method known also as the Triticum technique. We set out to demonstrate that vegetal cells have similar sensitivity to some toxic agents as animal cells, in which case a statistical correlation could be established. A series of new compounds synthesized by the Romanian National Institute for Chemical Pharmaceutical Research and Development as potential β3 adrenergic receptors agonists were tested for their acute toxicity using classic animal exposure models, before investigating possible anti-diabetic and anti-obesity effects. We then determined whether similar conclusions might be reached exposing vegetal material to the same agents. We successfully demonstrated that plants are affected in a very similar way as animals when exposed to some potentially toxic agents, providing new possibilities for ending unethical animal experiments.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a Gram-negative bacillus included among the six “ESKAPE” microbial species with an outstanding ability to “escape” currently used antibiotics and developing new antibiotics against it is of the highest priority. Whereas minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values against Pseudomonas aeruginosa have been used previously for QSAR model development, disk diffusion results (inhibition zones) have not been apparently used for this purpose in the literature and we decided to explore their use in this sense. We developed multiple QSAR methods using several machine learning algorithms (support vector classifier, K nearest neighbors, random forest classifier, decision tree classifier, AdaBoost classifier, logistic regression and naïve Bayes classifier). We used four sets of molecular descriptors and fingerprints and three different methods of data balancing, together with the “native” data set. In total, 32 models were built for each set of descriptors or fingerprint and balancing method, of which 28 were selected and stacked to create meta-models. In terms of balanced accuracy, the best performance was provided by KNN, logistic regression and decision tree classifier, but the ensemble method had slightly superior results in nested cross-validation.

Solidago virgaurea L. (European goldenrod, Woundwort), Asteraceae, is a familiar medicinal plant in Europe and other parts of the world, widely used and among the most researched species from its genus. The aerial parts of European goldenrod have long been used for urinary tract conditions and as an anti-inflammatory agent in the traditional medicine of different peoples. Its main chemical constituents are flavonoids (mainly derived from quercetin and kaempferol), C6-C1 and C6-C3 compounds, terpenes (mostly from the essential oil), and a large number of saponin molecules (mainly virgaureasaponins and solidagosaponins). Published research on its potential activities is critically reviewed here: antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, spasmolitic, antihypertensive, diuretic, antibacterial, antifungal, antiparasite, cytotoxic and antitumor, antimutagenic, antiadipogenic, antidiabetic, cardioprotective, and antisenescence. The evidence concerning its potential benefits is mainly derived from non-clinical studies, some effects are rather modest, whereas others are more promising, but need more confirmation in both non-clinical models and clinical trials.

The present paper presents the models used by the countries that joined the Euro zone after 2000, in fixing the central parity and the evolution of the local currency towards Euro, when participating in Exchange Rate Mechanism II (ERM II). It synthesizes the main theories for determining the equilibrium exchange rate. It also presents the modality of putting them into practice in the countries that had already become members of the Euro zone. The better we know the other countries’ experience in the respect of the joining process to the Euro zone, the better will Romania be able to prepare itself for adopting the unique European currency. Thus, we will be synthesize the main approaches within literature and also in the economic policy deciders’ practice concerning the estimation of the equilibrium exchange rate and implicitly, of the central parity. The paper presents the modality of fixing the central parity and the experience of participating in ERM II for a number of member states that joined the Euro zone after 2000: Greece, Slovakia, Slovenia, Malta, Cyprus and Estonia. For these states we also analyze the evolution of the currency towards Euro while participating in ERM II. Starting from these examples, we explain the advantages and the disadvantages in fixing the central parity over/at/under the value of the exchange rate on the market at the moment of joining ERM II and we underline the problems that might occur in the case of choosing a central parity that is not compatible with the equilibrium value of the exchange rate.

The increased detection of organic pollutants in drinking water and their resistance to degradation by wastewater treatment processes has motivated the development of more efficient, affordable and sustainable methods of purification of drinking water and wastewater. [...]

B-ring unsubstituted flavones (of which the most widely known are chrysin, baicalein, wogonin, and oroxylin A) are 2-phenylchromen-4-one molecules of which the B-ring is devoid of any hydroxy, methoxy, or other substituent. They may be found naturally in a number of herbal products used for therapeutic purposes, and several have been designed by researchers and obtained in the laboratory. They have generated interest in the scientific community for their potential use in a variety of pathologies, and understanding their pharmacokinetics is important for a grasp of their optimal use. Based on a comprehensive survey of the relevant literature, this paper examines their absorption (with deglycosylation as a preliminary step) and their fate in the body, from metabolism to excretion. Differences among species (inter-individual) and within the same species (intra-individual) variability have been examined based on the available data, and finally, knowledge gaps and directions of future research are discussed.

In the current study, we have examined the possibility to improve the biocompatibility of the (TiZrNbTaHf)C through replacement of either Ti or Ta by Si. The coatings were deposited on Si and 316L stainless steel substrates by magnetron sputtering in an Ar+CH4 mixed atmosphere and were examined for elemental composition, chemical bonds, surface topography, surface electrical charge and biocompatible characteristics. The net surface charge was evaluated at nano and macroscopic scale by measuring the electrical potential and work function, respectively. The biocompatible tests comprised determination of cell viability and cell attachment to the coated surface. The deposited coatings had C/(metal+Si) ratios close to unity, while a mixture of metallic carbide, free-carbon and oxidized species formed on the film surface. The coatings' surfaces were smooth and no influence of surface roughness on electrical charge or biocompatibility was found. The biocompatible characteristics correlated well with the electrical potential/work function, suggesting a significant role of surface charge in improving biocompatibility, particularly cell attachment to coating's surface. Replacement of either Ti or Ta by Si in the (TiZrNbTaHf)C coating led to an enhanced surface electrical charge, as well as to superior biocompatible properties, with best results for the (TiZrNbSiHf)C coating.

In the process of preparing a state for the accession to the Euro Zone it is essential to analyze the price competitiveness of that state’s economy and the challenges that entrepreneurs will have to face in the new economic environment. In the present paper the authors want to capture some aspects of the competitiveness of the Romanian economy and implicit its entrepreneurs with emphasis on price competitiveness, whereas accession to the Euro Zone implies giving up to the independence of exchange rate policy, with a huge impact on price competitiveness. For this purpose this study will highlight a few elements on the relative importance of price competitiveness of entrepreneurs’ exports performance. The process of accessing Euro Zone creates significant changes in the existing way of conducting business and impacts significantly entire business environment – and this will become evident also for Romania.

It has been documented that patients with mental or physical disabilities can benefit from being placed within the setting of a natural environment. Consequently, the concept of creating spaces that can enhance health preservation or patient recovery, while also augmenting environmental and aesthetic value, has merged as a contemporary discourse. Green areas around hospitals can offer a great opportunity to incorporate healing gardens to benefit their patients and not only. The aim of this paper is to propose a design for a sensory-therapeutic garden based on key principles derived from selected academic literature, focusing on the application of these principles in a healthcare setting in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. The design was informed also by onsite data collection and analysis, and it aims to create a healing landscape that addresses the needs of patients, healthcare providers, and visitors. This study seeks to augment the discourse in the field by demonstrating the practical application of key therapeutic garden design principles in a specific context and how these principles impacted the design process.
