En la laguna de las Ilusiones, Villahermosa, Tabasco, México, las especies de aves interactúan con elementos antrópicos del paisaje. Se realizaron avistamientos de aves acuáticas con el método de conteo por punto fijo durante la temporada de secas y de lluvias del año 2020 en 12 sitios de muestreo en la laguna. Se registraron variables urbanísticas, físicoquímicas del agua, de vegetación y de macrohábitats para evaluar su influencia en las aves acuáticas. Se registró un total de 1,134 individuos pertenecientes a 8 órdenes, 12 familias y 25 especies. Las especies más avistadas fueron Ardea alba, Egretta thula y Butorides virescens. La diversidad de especies (índice de Shannon) fue mayor en la temporada de secas (H = 2.40 bits) y menor en la temporada de lluvias (H = 1.89 bits). El análisis canónico demostró que la riqueza de especies disminuyó a medida que incrementó el porcentaje de urbanización en las inmediaciones de los sitios de muestreo.

3. Lipid Prospection Based on the Cellular Size of Phytoplankton Communities from Tropical Freshwater Ecosystems: A Systematic Literature Review

Eutrophication-resistant phytoplankton communities in freshwater ecosystems have a novel lipid potential to contribute to the development of tropical regions. The question that arises due to the unsustainability of their eutrophicated waters is how the recognition of the lipids of the resident phytoplankton progresses. Our aim was to provide an overview of the pico-, nano- and micro-cellular lipids of phytoplankton with a focus on eutrophic tropical freshwater ecosystems. Using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) framework, global and Latin American publications were retrieved based on search equations and specific questions. In total, 490 studies were reviewed. The inclusion criteria, in order, were (1) peer-reviewed articles, (2) articles investigating phytoplankton strains or communities from any aquatic environment, (3) articles on freshwater ecosystems, and (4) research in tropical climates. The contribution of freshwater phytoplankton was high and discontinuous, with a representation of 63% in the 21st century. Freshwater themes were resolved in the ecological context with phytoplankton or algae keywords, while microalgae were targeted using resource use keywords. On the tropical scale, technological themes on lipid microalgae were related to fatty acids, biofuels, biodiesel, antioxidants, and recombinant DNA. It is concluded that studies of the lipid composition of phytoplankton communities are delayed in the case of eutrophic tropical freshwater ecosystems.

4. Water Quality Indicators in Three Surface Hydraulic Connection Conditions in Tropical Floodplain Lakes

Water quality indicators have been tied to natural or man-made surface hydraulic connection (SHC) conditions. Among these, temporally connected lakes (TCL) are hydraulic intermediates between isolated (IL) and permanently connected lakes (PCL). Therefore, the aim of this study is to answer if water quality indicators can estimate the possible overlap between the two opposed conditions of SHC (IL and PCL) with the intermediate one (TCL) in lakes with similar modifications in the water level regulation at the basin level. Among nine water variables sampled in six lakes with the three SHC conditions mentioned, chlorophyll a (Chl-a), Secchi disk (SD), and total phosphorus (TP) were identified as quality water indicators through principal component analysis. Furthermore, said indicators were used to measure their overlap and trophic state index deviations. The Chl-a, SD, and TP values in TCL showed a 0.72 overlap of PCL and IL. TP surplus measured in all the lakes was meaningful in urbanized ILs and lessened in a rural lake (PCL6) with submerged rooted macrophytes. The estimated overlap of trophic indicators between TCL, IL, and PCL in this study must be verified at a global representative scale for predictive and preventive use in the conservation of tropical coastal plain lakes.

5. Environmental quality of the La Polvora urban lagoon in the Grijalva river watershed

Water quality and the diversity of epibenthic macrofauna and fish was analyzed in La Pólvora urban lagoon during low water season. The potential of hydrogen, total suspended solids, dissolved oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand, nitrates and total phosphorus met current Mexican norms for secondary contact recreational use. Nevertheless, values for fecal coliforms exceeded the norms and represented a health risk, although the water quality was classified as good according to the Water Quality Index. The doubling of total phosphorus recorded 15 years earlier in La Pólvora lagoon helps to explain the current hyper-eutrophic state. The diversity of epibenthic macrofauna and fish was lower than other limnetic ecosystems in the region due to the small number of species of mollusks and fish collected as well as the absence of aquatic insects and macrocrustaceans and fish belonging to the Poecillidae family. This lagoon is shown to be undergoing environmental degradation, as indicated by its hyper-eutrophic state, high values for fecal coliforms, low values for diversity of epibenthic macrofauna and fish, the percentage of exotic species and low values for the conditional factor of 11 fish species. These findings suggest the need to review the management program and its operations in this ecosystem.

The Neotropical region hosts 4225 freshwater fish species, ranking first among the world's most diverse regions for freshwater fishes. Our NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set is the first to produce a large-scale Neotropical freshwater fish inventory, covering the entire Neotropical region from Mexico and the Caribbean in the north to the southern limits in Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay. We compiled 185,787 distribution records, with unique georeferenced coordinates, for the 4225 species, represented by occurrence and abundance data. The number of species for the most numerous orders are as follows: Characiformes (1289), Siluriformes (1384), Cichliformes (354), Cyprinodontiformes (245), and Gymnotiformes (135). The most recorded species was the characid Astyanax fasciatus (4696 records). We registered 116,802 distribution records for native species, compared to 1802 distribution records for nonnative species. The main aim of the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set was to make these occurrence and abundance data accessible for international researchers to develop ecological and macroecological studies, from local to regional scales, with focal fish species, families, or orders. We anticipate that the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set will be valuable for studies on a wide range of ecological processes, such as trophic cascades, fishery pressure, the effects of habitat loss and fragmentation, and the impacts of species invasion and climate change. There are no copyright restrictions on the data, and please cite this data paper when using the data in publications.

8. Intra-annual variation of chlorophyll-a and nutrients in a hydraulically perturbed river-floodplain system in the Grijalva River basin

Antecedentes: La interconexion lateral en el sistema rio-llanura de inundacion Maluco fue reducida parcialmente por una carretera construida sobre una barrera natural. Objetivo: Determinar si las concentraciones de clorofila-a (Cla-a) y nutrientes contrastan en diferentes niveles de agua (NA) durante un ano hidrologico en el humedal fluvial. Metodos: El NA, Cla-a y nutrientes (NO2-, NO3-, NH4+ y PT) se midieron simultaneamente seis veces en dos estaciones durante dos anos. Las diferencias esperadas de las concentraciones de Cla-a y nutrientes, relacionadas a la fluctuacion intra-anual del NA, fueron analizadas por medio de tecnicas multivariadas. La hipotesis sostiene que no se detectaran diferencias intra anuales de Cla-a y nutrientes debido a la reduccion de la interconexion lateral por el efecto fisico del terraplen. Resultados: Ninguna variable fue descartada con el ACP. La distribucion intra-anual de las muestras resulto similar segun la rutina de perfiles de similitud. Coincidentemente: 1) mas del 54% de los valores de Cla-a y PT indicaron condiciones hipereutroficas durante todo el ano y 2) ninguno de los valores de WL sobrepaso la altura del terraplen (4.5 msnm). Ademas, las concentraciones maximas de Cla-a se registraron en los WL minimos. Conclusiones: La similitud intra-anual de la Cla-a y los nutrientes inorganicos se puede vincular a que la llanura de inundacion estuvo desconectada del rio Grijalva, ya que la inundacion no sobrepaso la altura del terraplen durante todo el tiempo de muestreo. La tendencia intra-anual independiente al tiempo de la persistencia de las altas concentraciones de Cla-a y PT en el sistema rio llanura de inundacion abre la oportunidad de estimar el caudal de entrada minimo requerido para restaurar los procesos biogeoquimicos en un estudio a largo plazo.

9. Diversidad de peces en la reserva de la biosfera Pantanos de Centla

Se presenta una lista sistemática de peces recolectados durante 2014 y 2015 en la Reserva de la Biosfera Pantanos de Centla con un incremento del 25% de su diversidad principalmente por la presencia de peces diádromos. El inventario comprende 75 especies, que representa el 37% de la ictiofauna en la cuenca Grijalva-Usumacinta, de las cuales cinco especies fueron no nativas invasoras donde el bagre armado (Pterygoplichthys spp.) fue el que presentó la mayor frecuencia de captura. Se identificaron 48 especies migratorias (38 diádromas y 10 potamodromas). La dominancia de peces diádromos y su presencia en sistemas de lagunas y fluviales nos indica el mantenimiento de la interconexión hidráulica entre ríos y lagunas. En los muestreos, se observó la ausencia de siete especies dulceacuícolas que fueron comunes en publicaciones previas, lo anterior puede ser debido a la disminución de hábitats como consecuencia de las actividades humanas y la introducción de especies invasoras. En este estudio se resalta la necesidad de mayores estudios enfocados a la biología de varias especies, con el objetivo de aclarar su condición de potamodromia y comprender la migración lateral que algunas especies presentan durante su ontogenia para satisfacer sus necesidades eco-fisiológicas.

La laguna El Cometa carece de información sobre la diversidad de microalgas, a pesar de ser el primer componente productivo de ecosistemas acuáticos e influir en la calidad y uso del agua. Por lo que se planteó el objetivo de determinar las morfoespecies de microalgas del fitoplancton en la laguna El Cometa así como, sus especies indicadoras y potencialmente tóxicas. Las muestras se recolectaron con una red de fitoplancton de 20μm en seis sitios en la temporada de lluvias. Se registraron 50 taxones de seis grupos taxonómicos que representan los primeros registros parala Reserva de la Biosfera Pantanos de Centla. Treinta y tres de ellos se suman a los registros existentes en la planicie costera del río Usumacinta. Se encontraron cinco taxones marinos, siete potencialmente tóxicos y cinco bioindicadoras de contaminación y de condiciones de eutrofización querepresentan riesgo de salud pública.

11. Relationship among physicochemical conditions, chlorophyll-a concentration, and water level in a tropical river–floodplain system

The free-flowing Usumacinta River maintains an average annual water-level fluctuation of 6.7 m. This study evaluated relationships between 14 physicochemical and biological variables and key factors in four water-level conditions in a river–floodplain system. The analysis incorporated intra-annual variation in all variables, with each selected in accordance with multiple statistical and physicochemical criteria. Possible correlations were examined as a function of various physicochemical and biological factors at each water level. Within the study area, defined by a temporal gradient in principal component 1, the yearly river overflow above the bankfull stage is characterized by water with a low level of total suspended solids. Data on riverine wetlands suggest that seasonal changes are key to determining intra- and inter-annual chlorophyll-a levels and water clarity. However, opposite trends are observed for high and low water-level conditions. Nutrient enrichment cannot be taken as the key physicochemical factor of water level, under either water-level conditions, due to the lack of a temporal gradient in principal component 2 and the high biochemical variability of nitrate and orthophosphate levels. In conclusion, the hypothesis was accepted for the production of phytoplankton biomass and light attenuation at low and high water levels, as both were dependent on intra-annual changes. The increases in chlorophyll-a related to the minimal variability at the lowest water level open the opportunity to gauge this relationship as a possible environmental predictor for river–floodplain systems.

El enriquecimiento de nutrientes es un factor de estrés involucrado en la declinación de vegetación sumergida. Sin embargo, la sensibilidad fisiológica o toxicológica de los genotipos varía debido a las interacciones microbióticas y el desbalance fisicoquímico del agua, las cuales han sido abordadas mediante una aproximación reduccionista y experimentos controlados. El objetivo del estudio fue evaluar, en un modelo de cultivo in vitro de Vallisneria americana, diferentes fuentes y concentraciones de N sobre la supervivencia y el crecimiento de hojas y raíces. Las plantas juveniles in vitro se expusieron a concentraciones de 500 a 2 000 µg L−1 de N total con fuentes de NH4, NO3 y NH4:NO3 (1:1) en un diseño factorial 4 x 3, en evaluaciones de corto y mediano plazo. La supervivencia fue inversamente proporcional a los síntomas de clorosis, necrosis o ruptura de tejidos. La primera elongación foliar se midió con un método no destructivo. Mientras que a los 25 días, se cuantificó la longitud individual y promedio de hojas y raíces, número de hojas regeneradas y número de raíces. Las plantas no mostraron síntomas de vulnerabilidad. El NH4 en todas sus concentraciones inhibió el crecimiento de los nueve parámetros analizados. En contraste, el NH4:NO3 causó dos inhibiciones a nivel de hoja y el NO3 estimuló todos los crecimientos de hojas y raíces. La predicción de crecimiento resulta prometedora para discriminar factores de estrés sobre la vegetación sumergida de los Pantanos de Centla.

Hypanus sabinus is reported in the limnetic environments in the coastal plain of the Southern Gulf of Mexico. Eight specimens were collected 51 km away from the coastline in electric conductivity values less than 1,017 µS cm-1. One pregnant female and one male with two caudal spines are included. These findings represent the first limnetic records of this species in southern Mexico.

Background. The distribution and diet of fish, as well as the specific composition of their prey, have been affected by the magnification of the spatial variations in salinity due to hydraulic infrastructure and climate change. Cathorops aguadulce was selected based on previous records of its diet and its current dominance in the estuarine systems in the southern Gulf of Mexico. Goals . The feeding habits were evaluated in relation to the variation of size composition, day-night, and seasonality in a coastal lagoon in the southern Gulf of Mexico. Methods. Two hundred ten digestive tracts were analyzed in juveniles and adults captured in a sampling that included the day-night and seasonal variation in three sampling sites located in a salinity gradient. The size composition was correlated (Spearman coefficient) with the spatial and temporal variation of salinity and temperature. The temporal and spatial variations of the Repletion (IR) and Relative Importance (IIR) indexes were analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis test and hierarchical clustering. Results. The size composition was independent of salinity variation and IR values (Kruskal-Wallis; p =0.649). Yet diet intensity in the dry season was significantly greater than in the transition and rainy seasons (Kruskal-Wallis; p =0.00001). Among the 11 food items defined, animal detritus and malacostracans, mainly tanaids, were the dominant feeding categories in the frequency of occurrence and according to the IIR. However, detritus predominated in juveniles, while tanaids were the preponderant item in the adults. Conclusions. Even though laguna Mecoacan recorded an ample salinity variation, C. aguadulce recorded a significant temporal variation in intensity of diet; the ontogenic shift of its diet was more relevant than the effects of the environmental variation of its feeding habits. This conclusion opens the possibility of testing whether the ontogenetic variation of their functional morphological traits is associated with the acquisition of food or movement.

En Mexico existen 3,256 especies de fitoplancton reportadas. En la region sureste, particularmente en las cuencas de los rios Tonala y Grijalva-Usumacinta, el registro varia entre 155 y 300 especies. Este numero de especies se considera bajo para una de las cuencas con mayor reserva de agua en el pais. Por tal motivo, se planteo el objetivo de reportar las especies de fitoplancton presentes en el humedal tropical Chaschoc, ubicado en la cuenca del rio Usumacinta. Para ello, el fitoplancton se recolecto durante el flujo bajo del ciclo de inundacion en 2014 mediante arrastres oblicuos. Se registraron 129 morfoespecies de 6 grupos taxonomicos: Cyanophyta (Cyanoprocaryota), Bacillariophyta, Chlorophyta, Cryptophyta, Euglenophyta (Euglenozoa) y Dinophyta (Dinoflagellata). Entre estos, las Chlorophyta fueron el grupo mejor representado, mientras que las Cryptophyta resultaron el grupo con menos especies. En la lista floristica se reportan 40 nuevos registros para la cuenca baja del rio Usumacinta, 13 especies potencialmente toxicas y 42 indicadoras de contaminacion por materia organica o eutrofizacion. Sin embargo, es esperable que el registro de especies aumente con muestreos en las diferentes temporadas del ciclo hidrologico y otros humedales asociados con el rio Usumacinta y sus tributarios.

To distinguish between the stress of Vallisneria americana caused by increases either in the molar N:P relation (N-NO3 and P-H2PO4) or in the concentration of nutrients (CN), the nutritional regimen (NR) was examined by means of two randomized factorial experiments on plants cultured in vitro in modified MS medium. The first (RN1) crossed N:P relation of 16, 20, and 24 and CN (%) of 25, 50, and 100; while the second (RN2) evaluated N:P relations of 48, 60, 72, and CN percentages of 3.125, 6.25, 12.5, 25, and 50. The mechanism of resistance to the stress by factor was examined with the decrease in the regeneration and viability of leaves and roots; both measured by unit or percentage for 45 to 75 days, since the plants in vitro did not produce ramets. In NR1 experiments, all plants died in 100% CN and leaves registered greater resistance with 24N:P, and 25% CN (p 0.05). The loricariids in submerged rooted vegetation need attention, since they represent another risk for these associations of aquatic macrophytes, which shelter high biodiversity.

Resumen en español: "Dermatemys mawii es la tortuga mesoamericana en mayor riesgo de desaparecer. El conocimiento sobre sus poblaciones y su hábitat está pobremente estudiado, lo que representa una limitante para el desarrollo de estrategias para su conservación. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue realizar un análisis espacial y temporal del hábitat, de las amenazas y de la presencia de Dermatemys mawii en la Reserva de la Biosfera Pantanos de Centla (RBPC). La primera etapa consistió en un diagnóstico etnoecológico participativo en siete comunidades. Los muestreos del hábitat se realizaron en los ríos Grijalva, Usumacinta y Tabasquillo; se evaluaron 11 variables (hidrológicas, fisicoquímicas del agua y de la vegetación), se identificaron tres tipos de amenazas antrópicas y se realizó una representación espacial a través de un Sistema de Información Geográfico. La presencia de la especie se determinó mediante ocho trampas de desvío acuáticas en cada uno de los sistemas estudiados. Los resultados acerca del conocimiento local sobre Dermatemys mawii y su hábitat variaron de acuerdo a la dedicación, actividad y edad de los entrevistados, documentándose descripciones sobre su historia de vida. El hábitat presentó variaciones espaciales en velocidad, transparencia, cobertura y riqueza de hidrófitas, cobertura y riqueza de vegetación ribereña y refugio; las diferencias temporales fueron en profundidad, velocidad, transparencia, oxígeno disuelto y temperatura. Se determinó que las variables de mayor relevancia para explicar la heterogeneidad ambiental son las características de la vegetación y las propiedades fisicoquímicas del agua. La presencia de la especie se confirmó en los tres ríos, pero la mayor abundancia relativa se registró en el río Tabasquillo, caracterizado por su abundante y continua vegetación riberina. Mediante el análisis de amenazas se generaron mapas representando la distribución espacial de las amenazas y se cuantificaron a través de índices de amenazas que se correlacionaron con la calidad del hábitat, detectándose que el sistema Usumacinta es el sistema con mayor grado de amenazas antrópicas. Los resultados presentados establecen bases de monitoreo y de restauración del hábitat. "
