- Abstract
This chapter investigates the effectiveness of luxury brands’ messages focused on product sustainability rather than on traditional luxury product features. The study sheds light on the role of perceived product uniqueness and consumers’ conspicuous consumption orientation. An online experiment has been conducted among a sample of 144 participants exposed to a luxury product communication message focused on product sustainability or focused on product performance. Results show that a communication message related to a luxury product and focused on sustainability (vs. performance) leads to higher positive attitudes toward such product and this effect is mediated by consumers’ perceived product uniqueness. Additionally, findings underline the role of conspicuous consumption in magnifying such effect. Implications and suggestions for marketers and managers are discussed.

- Abstract
Fashion, and the growth of fashion, are presented as the manifestation of a process of civilization, within a capitalist culture (capital understood as material possessions) that has become global and imperialist, of which - in an economic sense - the industry (or the fashion system?) functions as one of its main instruments of exploitation. And with respect to design, Arturo Escobar said:'Can design detach itself from its roots in modernist practices of unsustainability and defuturization and reorient itself towards other commitments, practices, narratives and ontological enactions? Moreover, can design be part of the toolkit for the transition to the pluriverze (i.e. a world in which many worlds can fit)?'This book presents the importance of cultural sustainability in the textiles and fashion industry, decolonizing fashion system and promotes the design for transitions.

- Abstract
This book highlights the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. These universally agreed-upon aspirational goals for people, the planet, prosperity, and peace will not be achieved without all global and local actors – governments, the private sector, and civil society – playing their part. The SDGs offer a unique opportunity to align existing sustainability initiatives through a common framework and accelerate the industry's efforts to address important challenges in the global textile value chain. Future sourcing models will largely be redefined by how this sector addresses the underlying themes as sourcing countries prioritize the goals and integrate them into their national plans. Stimulating discussion and exploring the many different ways in which the textile and clothing industry can implement the UN SDGs, this informative book provides readers with a comprehensive understanding of the topic, and presents various approaches, including reflexive, empirical, hands-on or applied theoretical.

- Organic clothing, Cotton--Environmental aspects
- Abstract
This book highlights the traditional boundaries of the textile industry and discusses to what extent organic cotton is sustainable. It also examines the domestic and international influences of agricultural practices on cotton. Sustainability issues in the textile and fashion sectors require the influences that arise from beyond the boundaries of the conventional textile industry to be taken into account. These “external” influences—from (international or domestic) agricultural practices and energy policies to consumption patterns and levels of ecological notions of the society—have a significant impact on the sustainability of the textile and fashion sectors as a whole. Ecological and social concerns go far beyond individual companies and industries; therefore, in order to become more sustainable, the textile (and fashion) industry needs to address these concerns appropriately and connect with other disciplines, industries, communities, and international groups.

- Abstract
The fashion industry has not traditionally been associated with definitions of sustainable development and sustainability. The social and environmental challenges faced by the fashion industry concern the entire supply and demand chain, propped up by a throwaway consumer culture. In response to these sustainability challenges, some fashion companies have developed innovative social and environmental initiatives. While many of these initiatives are sympathetic, resourceful and hold real potential for generating social and environmental improvements, greater scale and scope is needed in order to bring about a more fundamental shift in current practices. This Special Issue of the Journal of Corporate Citizenship explores how sustainability can be a driver for exploring new business models within a single industrial setting, highlighting some of the sustainability initiatives that bring hope for a more sustainable future. New Business Models for Sustainable Fashion is a must-read for researchers and practitioners tackling the challenges of an industry in need of large-scale transformation.

There is no doubt that the textile (and fashion) industry is important for the economy; however, taking into account the concept of sustainability, this industry many times—actually most times—operates to the detriment of environmental and social factors. John R. Ehrenfeld defines sustainability as “the possibility that humans and other life will flourish on the earth forever” (Ehrenfeld and Hoffman 2013, p. 7). This notion of sustainability is not only a concern for people and the environment, but also for animals. Besides environmental and social issues, more than 50 million animals suffer cruel death each year to benefit the fashion industry (Born Free USA 2014). The purpose of this chapter is to make a contribution to the animal care agenda in the textile and fashion industry by presenting the United Nations Global Compact Code of Conduct for the Textile and Fashion Industry and Ovis 21 case—a company from the Argentine Patagonia, that is a B Corp and Savory Institute Hub company, but a company in which People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) discovered cruelty to animals in one of their establishments. This also puts forward the reactions of two of its most important clients, the media and consumers. This chapter closes with an analysis and some conclusions about the topic and Ovis 21 case.

- Abstract
There is no doubt that the textile industry – the production of clothing, fabrics, thread, fibre and related products – plays a significant part in the global economy. It also frequently operates with disregard to its environmental and social impacts. The textile industry uses large quantities of water and outputs large quantities of waste. As for social aspects, many unskilled jobs have disappeared in regions that rely heavily on these industries. Another serious and still unresolved problem is the flexibility textile industry companies claim to need. Faced with fierce international competition, they are increasingly unable to offer job security. This is without even considering the informal-sector work proliferating both in developing and developed countries. Child labour persists within this sector despite growing pressure to halt it.Fashion demands continuous consumption. In seeking to own the latest trends consumers quickly come to regard their existing garments as inferior, if not useless.'Old'items become unwanted as quickly as new ones come into demand. This tendency towards disposability results in the increased use of resources and thus the accelerated accumulation of waste. It is obvious to many that current fashion industry practices are in direct competition with sustainability objectives; yet this is frequently overlooked as a pressing concern. It is, however, becoming apparent that there are social and ecological consequences to the current operation of the fashion industry: sustainability in the sector has been gaining attention in recent years from those who believe that it should be held accountable for the pressure it places on the individual, as well as its contribution to increases in consumption and waste disposal. This book takes a wide-screen approach to the topic, covering, among other issues: sustainability and business management in textile and fashion companies; value chain management; use of materials; sustainable production processes; fashion, needs and consumption; disposal; and innovation and design. The book will be essential reading for researchers and practitioners in the global fashion business.

The Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC) is an industry-wide group of more than 100 leading apparel and footwear brands, retailers, suppliers, nonprofits, and nongovernmental organizations working to reduce the environmental and social impacts of apparel and footwear products around the world. The SAC Higg Index 2.0 is primarily an indicator-based tool for apparel that enables companies to evaluate material types, products, facilities, and processes based on a range of environmental and product design choices. The United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) is a strategic policy initiative for businesses that are committed to aligning their operations and strategies with 10 universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, labor, environment, and anti-corruption. The first “sectorial” initiative of the UNGC is the Code of Conduct and Manual for the Fashion and Textile Industry, which is totally aligned with the Global Compact principles. This chapter introduces SAC Higg Index 2.0 and the UNGC Code of Conduct, in addition to describing their principles or constituent tools. The chapter also analyzes the differences between both initiatives, putting forward some thoughts based on the impacts of the fashion and textile sector. However, because every company is unique, this work is not intended to prescribe the only way to develop sustainable strategies in the textile and fashion sectors.
