Abstract: The pollution process of the headwaters of the Cachoeira river, located in the city of Joinville, state of Santa Catarina, started in the 1950s and was accentuated due to the urban and industrial development of the region. In 2009, the community sought in the independent media the support not obtained in the commercial media, and a group of residents of the Costa e Silva neighborhood mobilized and created their own communication channels, such as a blog and a web TV channel, which allies other strategies were instrumental in combating pollution. Qualitative research is based on the phenomenological philosophical current and discusses the role of environmental activism / net-activism, understood as broad communication actions, as well as the role of citizen journalism and Environmental Education, in scenarios of socioenvironmental degradation. In the end, it appears that the social mobilization of the activists was successful in the local confrontation, but with negative consequences for a nearby area to which the problem was transferred. In this journey, it was possible to recall part of Joinville's history and its relationship with the Cachoeira River; verify the process of mobilization and environmental activism carried out in the region of the headwaters of the Cachoeira river in the Costa e Silva neighborhood, as well as the traditional and digital communication actions incorporated into the process; identify how environmental citizen journalism combined with environmental education practices acted on environmental changes in the area of the headwaters of the Cachoeira River and, also, observe the transfer of socio-environmental problems to another adjacent region. The empirical evidence related to the objectives of this research was obtained by direct contact with the community of the Costa e Silva neighborhood, site of the springs of the Cachoeira river, seen here as a non-human actor, from which the mobilization movement is configured and journalistic products. referring to the verified problem were produced. They are human actors involved in the fight to clean up river springs: residents, students, teachers, researchers, activists and community leaders. The participation of this researcher in the process of local activism, allowed, through participant observation and action research, to describe the history of mobilization, list, characterize and analyze the action and communication strategies carried out, to typify the forms of activism and characteristics of mobilization. Here, actions involving citizen and environmental journalism practices were also identified and analyzed, according to the theoretical concepts about these types of journalism. The statements obtained in the semi-structured interviews, questionnaires and focus groups with the actors were submitted to content analysis; the triangulation technique of methodological procedures allowed to verify, in the end, how environmental activism / netativism and journalism effectively contributed to the environmental transformations in question. Background: An emergency front‐of‐neck access (eFONA), also called can't intubate, can't oxygenate (CICO) rescue, is a rare event. Little is known about the performance of surgical or percutaneous airways in EDs across Australia and New Zealand. Objective: To describe the management of cases resulting in an eFONA, and recorded in The Australian and New Zealand Emergency Department Airway Registry (ANZEDAR). Methods: A retrospective case series and review of ED patients undergoing surgical or percutaneous airways. Data were collected prospectively over 60 months between 2010 and 2015 from 44 participating EDs. Results: An eFONA/CICO rescue airway was performed on 15 adult patients: 14 cricothyroidotomies (0.3% of registry intubations) and one tracheostomy. The indication for intubation was 60% trauma and 40% medical aetiologies. The intubator specialty was emergency medicine in eight (53.3%) episodes. Thirteen (86.7%) cricothyroidotomies and the sole tracheostomy (6.7%) were performed at major referral hospitals with 12 (80%) surgical airways out of hours. In four (26.7%) cases, cricothyroidotomy was performed as the primary intubation method. Pre‐oxygenation techniques were used in 14 (93.3%) episodes; apnoeic oxygenation in four (26.7%). Conclusions: Most cases demonstrated deviations from standard difficult airway practice, which may have increased the likelihood of performance of a surgical airway, and its increased likelihood out of hours. Our findings may inform training strategies to improve care for ED patients requiring this critical intervention. We recommend further discussion of proposed standard terminology for emergency surgical or percutaneous airways, to facilitate clear crisis communication. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
