Topological phases feature robust edge states that are protected against the effects of defects and disorder. The robustness of these states presents opportunities to design technologies that are tolerant to fabrication errors and resilient to environmental fluctuations. While most topological phases rely on conservative, or Hermitian, couplings, recent theoretical efforts have combined conservative and dissipative couplings to propose new topological phases for ultracold atoms and for photonics. However, the topological phases that arise due to purely dissipative couplings remain largely unexplored. Here we realize dissipatively coupled versions of two prominent topological models, the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model and the Harper-Hofstadter (HH) model, in the synthetic dimensions of a time-multiplexed photonic resonator network. We observe the topological edge state of the SSH and HH models, measure the SSH model's band structure, and induce a topological phase transition between the SSH model's trivial and topological phases. In stark contrast with conservatively coupled topological phases, the topological phases of our network arise from bands of dissipation rates that possess nontrivial topological invariants, and the edge states of these topological phases exhibit isolated dissipation rates that occur in the gaps between the bulk dissipation bands. Our results showcase the ability of dissipative couplings to enable time-reversal symmetry broken topological phases with nonzero Chern numbers, which have proven challenging to realize in the optical domain. Moreover, our time-multiplexed network, with its ability to implement multiple synthetic dimensions, dynamic and inhomogeneous couplings, and time-reversal symmetry breaking synthetic gauge fields, offers a flexible and scalable architecture for future work in synthetic dimensions., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

The ability to tailor the hopping interactions between the constituent elements of a physical system could enable the observation of unusual phenomena that are otherwise inaccessible in standard settings1,2. In this regard, a number of recent theoretical studies have indicated that an asymmetry in either the short- or long-range complex exchange constants can lead to counterintuitive effects, for example, the possibility of a Kramer’s degeneracy, even in the absence of spin 1/2 or the breakdown of the bulk–boundary correspondence3–8. Here we show how such tailored asymmetric interactions can be realized in photonic integrated platforms by exploiting non-Hermitian concepts, enabling a class of topological behaviours induced by optical gain. As a demonstration, we implement the Haldane model, a canonical lattice that relies on asymmetric long-range hopping to exhibit quantum Hall behaviour without a net external magnetic flux. The topological response observed in this lattice is a result of gain and vanishes in a passive but otherwise identical structure. Our findings not only enable the realization of a wide class of non-trivial phenomena associated with tailored interactions, but also open up avenues to study the role of gain and nonlinearity in topological systems in the presence of quantum noise. Non-Hermitian concepts together with optical gain allow the tailoring of short- and long-range exchange interactions in integrated topological photonics, and an exact Haldane model can be realized in this way.

Finding the solution to a large category of optimization problems, known as the NP-hard class, requires an exponentially increasing solution time using conventional computers. Lately, there has been intense efforts to develop alternative computational methods capable of addressing such tasks. In this regard, spin Hamiltonians, which originally arose in describing exchange interactions in magnetic materials, have recently been pursued as a powerful computational tool. Along these lines, it has been shown that solving NP-hard problems can be effectively mapped into finding the ground state of certain types of classical spin models. Here, we show that arrays of metallic nanolasers provide an ultra-compact, on-chip platform capable of implementing spin models, including the classical Ising and XY Hamiltonians. Various regimes of behavior including ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic, as well as geometric frustration are observed in these structures. Our work paves the way towards nanoscale spin-emulators that enable efficient modeling of large-scale complex networks.

Microscale and nanoscale electrically pumped lasers are expected to play an indispensable role in future photonic integrated circuits. Small footprint, low threshold, high efficiency, and large side-mode suppression ratio (SMSR) are among the most important characteristics that such on-chip emitters should exhibit—allowing for large-scale integrability, low energy consumption, and stable output power. Microring resonators are one of the main contenders for the realization of such compact light sources. However, the use of microring laser cavities has been so far hindered by their tendency to operate in multiple modes. Quite recently, several studies have shown that notions from parity-time (PT)-symmetry and non-Hermitian physics can be utilized to effectively enforce single-mode operation in semiconductor microring laser arrangements. However, as of now, most works in this area were mainly devoted to the proof of concept demonstrations, while the feasibility of practical implementation has remained largely unexplored. In this article, we demonstrate the first regrowth free, electrically pumped microscale PT-symmetric laser. Our results can pave the way toward the utilization of exceptional points in more diverse applications ranging from on-chip light sources and modulators to laser beam steering systems and active sensors.

Spin models arise in the microscopic description of magnetic materials, where the macroscopic characteristics are governed by exchange interactions among the constituent magnetic moments. Recently, there has been a growing interest in complex systems with spin Hamiltonians, largely due to the rich behaviors exhibited by such interactions at the macroscale. Along these lines, it has been shown that certain classes of optimization problems involving large degrees of freedom can be effectively mapped into classical spin models. In this vein, the respective extremum can be found by identifying the ground state of the associated spin Hamiltonian. Here, we show both theoretically and experimentally, that the cooperative interplay among vectorial electromagnetic modes in coupled metallic nanolasers can be utilized as a means to emulate certain types of spin-like systems. The ensuing spin exchange interactions are in general anisotropic, in a way similar to that encountered in magnetic materials involving spin-orbit coupling. For some topologies, we find that these active nanophotonic structures are governed by a classical XY Hamiltonian that exhibits two phases akin to those associated with ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AF) materials. In addition, we show that in certain configurations, the electromagnetic field distribution can undergo geometrical frustration, depending on the lattice shape and the transverse resonant modes supported by the individual cavity elements. Our results could pave the way towards a new scalable nanophotonic platform to study spin exchange interactions, that can in turn be potentially exploited to investigate more large-scale networks, emulate some magnetic materials, or to address a variety of optimization problems., Comment: 30 pages

We theoretically investigate a Thouless pumping scheme in the 1D topological Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model for single and multiple band-gaps systems when implemented in a discrete nematic liquid crystal arrangement. For an electrically controlled SSH waveguide array, we numerically demonstrate edge-to-edge light transport at low power levels. We demonstrate Bloch oscillations in a dissipatively-coupled network of time-multiplexed resonators, and experimentally measure the topological invariants in open systems. This reveals the complex interplay between topology and dissipation with potential applications in quantum/classical photonics.

We experimentally realize a topological actively mode-locked laser by coupling the pulses with intracavity delay lines. Our work reveals a new regime of nonlinear topological photonics and has potential applications to short-pulse lasers.

Topological insulators possess protected boundary states which are robust against disorders and have immense implications in both fermionic and bosonic systems. Harnessing these topological effects in nonequilibrium scenarios is highly desirable and has led to the development of topological lasers. The topologically protected boundary states usually lie within the bulk bandgap, and selectively exciting them without inducing instability in the bulk modes of bosonic systems is challenging. Here, we consider topological parametrically driven nonlinear resonator arrays that possess complex eigenvalues only in the edge modes in spite of the uniform pumping. We show parametric oscillation occurs in the topological boundary modes of one and two dimensional systems as well as in the corner modes of a higher order topological insulator system. Furthermore, we demonstrate squeezing dynamics below the oscillation threshold, where the quantum properties of the topological edge modes are robust against certain disorders. Our work sheds light on the dynamics of weakly nonlinear topological systems driven out-of-equilibrium and reveals their intriguing behavior in the quantum regime.

We utilize dissipatively coupled, time-multiplexed photonic resonator net-works to demonstrate topologically nontrivial behaviors in the dissipation of one- and two-dimensional lattices. We present edge state and band structure measurements of the these networks.

We report on the first observation of a gain-induced topological response in a photonic lattice exhibiting asymmetric long-range interactions enabled by unidirectional microrings under pumping. This new platform is used to implement the Haldane lattice.

The complex nonlinear behaviors of heavily multimode lightwave structures have been recently the focus of considerable attention. Here we develop an optical thermodynamic approach capable of describing the thermalization dynamics in large scale nonlinear photonic chain networks - a problem that has remained unresolved so far. A Sackur-Tetrode equation is obtained that explicitly provides the entropy of these systems in terms of all the extensive variables involved. This entropic description leads to a self-consistent set of equations of state from where the optical temperature and chemical potential of the photon gas can be uniquely determined. Processes like isentropic expansion/compression, Joule expansion, as well as aspects associated with beam cleaning/cooling and thermal conduction effects in such chain networks are discussed. Our results open new vistas through which one can describe in an effortless manner the exceedingly complex dynamics of highly multimoded nonlinear bosonic systems that are nowadays of importance in areas ranging from high-power photonic settings to cold atom condensates and optomechanics.

We demonstrate both theoretically and experimentally that coupled metallic nanolasers can be used to emulate spin-Hamiltonians. Depending on the geometry of the array, we observe ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic behaviors, as well as geometric frustration.

We show that the optical brightness of a high-intensity multimode beam can be substantially enhanced using thermodynamic optical cooling schemes enabled by nonlinear interactions. This can be achieved without violating the second law of thermodynamics.

We describe the recent progress on topological insulator lasers, where we employed the fundamental concepts of topological insulators in the non-Hermitian laser system, to force an array of many semiconductor (InGaAs) resonators to lock together and act as one coherent laser source.

Non-Hermitian exceptional points (EPs) represent a special type of degeneracy where not only the eigenvalues coalesce, but also the eigenstates tend to collapse on each other. Recent studies have shown that in the presence of an EP, light-matter interactions are profoundly modified, leading to a host of novel optical phenomena ranging from enhanced sensitivity to chiral light transport. As of now, however, in order to stabilize a system at the vicinity of an exceptional point, its related parameters must be carefully tuned and/or continuously controlled. To overcome this limitation, here we introduce a new family of broadband exceptional points based on unidirectional coupling, implemented by incorporating an Sshaped waveguide in a microring cavity. In active settings, the resulting unidirectionality exhibits unprecedented resilience to perturbations, thus providing a robust and tunable approach for directly generating beams with distinct orbital angular momentum (OAM). This work could open up new possibilities for manipulating OAM degrees of freedom in applications pertaining to telecommunications and quantum computing, while at the same time may expand the notions of non-Hermiticity in the orbital angular momentum space.

A new type of geometric phase in twisted optical fibers enables optical tunneling suppression via the Aharonov-Bohm effect., Geometric phases appear ubiquitously in many and diverse areas of the physical sciences, ranging from classical and molecular dynamics to quantum mechanics and solid-state physics. In the realm of optics, similar phenomena are known to emerge in the form of a Pancharatnam-Berry phase whenever the polarization state traces a closed contour on the Poincaré sphere. While this class of geometric phases has been extensively investigated in both free-space and guided wave systems, the observation of similar effects in photon tunneling arrangements has so far remained largely unexplored. Here, we experimentally demonstrate that the tunneling or coupling process in a twisted multicore fiber system can display a chiral geometric phase accumulation, analogous to the Aharonov-Bohm effect. In our experiments, the tunneling geometric phase is manifested through the interference of the corresponding supermodes. Our work provides the first observation of Aharonov-Bohm suppression of tunneling in an optical setting.

The synergetic use of gain and loss in parity-time symmetric coupled resonators has been shown to lead to single-mode lasing operation. However, at the corresponding resonance frequency, an ideal ring resonator tends to support two degenerate eigenmodes, traveling along the cavity in opposite directions. Here, we show a unidirectional single-moded parity-time symmetric laser by incorporating active S-bend structures with opposite chirality in the respective ring resonators. Such chiral elements break the rotation symmetry of the ring cavities by providing an asymmetric coupling between the clockwise (CW) and the counterclockwise (CCW) traveling modes, hence creating a new type of exceptional point. This property, consequently, leads to the suppression of one of the counter-propagating modes. In this paper, we first measure the extinction ratio between the CW and CCW modes in a single ring resonator in the presence of an S-bend waveguide. We then experimentally investigate the unidirectional emission in PT-symmetric systems below and above the exceptional point. Finally, unidirectional emission will be shown in systems of two S-bend ring resonators coupled through a link structure.

We demonstrate a microring laser generating vortex beams with topological charge. By implementing a chiral S-bend element inside the active ring and a second-order grating structure around the sidewall, this system could effectively down-convert the large order whispering gallery mode to on-demand OAM values.

We demonstrate a nonmagnetic topological insulator laser exhibiting topologically-protected transport. The topological properties of the system give rise to single mode lasing, robustness against fabrication defects, and higher slope efficiencies compared to its trivial counterpart.

We report the first observation of Aharonov-Bohm-like topological suppression of optical tunneling in twisted multicore fibers. Experimental results show that this effect is insensitive to imperfections, nonlinearities and mode-mixing processes, in agreement with theoretical predictions.

INTRODUCTION Physical systems that exhibit topological invariants are naturally endowed with robustness against perturbations, as was recently demonstrated in many settings in condensed matter, photonics, cold atoms, acoustics, and more. The most prominent manifestations of topological systems are topological insulators, which exhibit scatter-free edge-state transport, immune to perturbations and disorder. Recent years have witnessed intense efforts toward exploiting these physical phenomena in the optical domain, with new ideas ranging from topology-driven unidirectional devices to topological protection of path entanglement. But perhaps more technologically relevant than all topological photonic settings studied thus far is, as proposed by the accompanying theoretical paper by Harari et al ., an all-dielectric magnet-free topological insulator laser, with desirable properties stemming from the topological transport of light in the laser cavity. RATIONALE We demonstrate nonmagnetic topological insulator lasers. The topological properties of the laser system give rise to single-mode lasing, robustness against fabrication defects, and notably higher slope efficiencies compared to those of the topologically trivial counterparts. We further exploit the properties of the active topological platform by assembling topological insulator lasers from S -chiral microresonators that enforce predetermined unidirectional lasing even in the absence of magnetic fields. RESULTS Our topological insulator laser system is an aperiodic array of 10 unit cell–by–10 unit cell coupled ring resonators on an InGaAsP quantum wells platform. The active lattice uses the topological architecture suggested in the accompanying theoretical paper. This two-dimensional setting is composed of a square lattice of ring resonators coupled to each other by means of link rings. The intermediary links are judiciously spatially shifted to introduce a set of hopping phases, establishing a synthetic magnetic field and two topological band gaps. The gain in this laser system is provided by optical pumping. To promote lasing of the topologically protected edge modes, we pump the outer perimeter of the array while leaving the interior lossy. We find that this topological insulator laser operates in single mode even considerably above threshold, whereas the corresponding topologically trivial realizations lase in multiple modes. Moreover, the topological laser displays a slope efficiency that is considerably higher than that in the corresponding trivial realizations. We further demonstrate the topological features of this laser by observing that in the topological array, all sites emit coherently at the same wavelength, whereas in the trivial array, lasing occurs in localized regions, each at a different frequency. Also, by pumping only part of the topological array, we demonstrate that the topological edge mode always travels along the perimeter and emits light through the output coupler. By contrast, when we pump the trivial array far from the output coupler, no light is extracted from the coupler because the lasing occurs at stationary modes. We also observe that, even in the presence of defects, the topological protection always leads to more efficient lasing compared to that of the trivial counterpart. Finally, to show the potential of this active system, we assemble a topological system based on S -chiral resonators, which can provide new avenues to control the topological features. CONCLUSION We have experimentally demonstrated an all-dielectric topological insulator laser and found that the topological features enhance the lasing performance of a two-dimensional array of microresonators, making them lase in unison in an extended topologically protected scatter-free edge mode. The observed single longitudinal-mode operation leads to a considerably higher slope efficiency as compared to that of a corresponding topologically trivial system. Our results pave the way toward a new class of active topological photonic devices, such as laser arrays, that can operate in a coherent fashion with high efficiencies.

We report the first observation of lasing topological edge states in a 1D Su-Schrieffer-Heeger active array of microring resonators. We show that the judicious use of non-Hermiticity can promote single edge-mode lasing in such arrays. Our experimental and theoretical results demonstrate that, in the presence of chiral-time symmetry, this non-Hermitian topological structure can experience phase transitions that are dictated by a complex geometric phase. Our work may pave the way towards understanding the fundamental aspects associated with the interplay among non-Hermiticity, nonlinearity, and topology in active systems.

At resonance, mircoring resonators tend to support two counter-propagating degenerate modes. By incorporating S-bend chiral elements in each resonator, unidirectional single mode lasing below and above PT-symmetry breaking point is experimentally demonstrated.

We show that an Aharonov-Bohm like suppression of optical tunneling can take place in linear and nonlinear twisted multicore optical fiber structures. The energy exchange is analyzed under nonlinear conditions and a viable setting to observe these effects is suggested.
