A variety of alternative operating systems are reviewed and compared to the dominant Microsoft Windows 98 and upcoming Windows 2000. Virtually every PC sold is loaded with a version of Windows, which some users uninstall. Tests show that Windows 98 offers top-notch scores in usability but not in technical strength. Mac OS 8.6 is extremely usable but suffers from performance and stability problems. Linux is less usable than Windows or the Mac, but offers superior performance and out-of-box features. BeOS 4.0 is excellent in usability and performance but supports very little hardware, has few applications and fewer features, and can be difficult to find support for. Windows 2000 may eclipse all of the alternatives; tests of a beta version show tremendously enhanced usability, hardware support and application support, although its stability cannot yet be judged fairly. Other choices include Sun Solaris, FreeBSD, numerous commercial Unix variants and even MS-DOS.
