ABSTRACT Purpose: To evaluate, by quantitative and qualitative methods, the glomerular ultrastructure in Wistar rats fed a cafeteria diet. Methods: Male Wistar rats were divided into two groups at 21 days of age: control (C, n = 10) and cafeteria diet (CAF, n = 8). The animals were followed up until 5 months of age, followed by euthanasia. The blood, kidneys, and fat deposits––epididymal, retroperitoneal, and subcutaneous––were extracted and analyzed. Data were analyzed by Student’s t test, and p < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The cafeteria diet promoted glucose intolerance, hyperglycemia (p < 0.0001), and deposition of retroperitoneal fat (p < 0.005). Scanning electron microscopy revealed that the length of the foot process was similar in both groups. The quantitative analyses by transmission electron microscopy revealed that the cafeteria diet reduced the thickness of the glomerular basement membrane (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The intake of lipids and simple carbohydrates were found to be associated with alteration in the glomerular ultrastructure. However, more studies are needed to evaluate not only the effects of high-protein and high-fat diets on components of the glomerular filtration barrier, but also renal physiology.

Background/Aim. The ability to effectively and consistently penetrate dentinal tubules is considered a favorable factor for the evaluation of root canal sealers (RCSs). The aim of the study was to assess the penetration depth into dentinal tubules of three RCSs combined with four obturation techniques. Methods. The mesial canals of 66 extracted human mandibular molars were endodontically prepared and randomly allocated into 12 experimental groups depending on the RCS type used (AH Plus™, EndoREZ™, Sealapex™) as well as the obturation technique applied [cold lateral compaction, cone-fit, carrier-based (with heated gutta-percha), warm vertical compaction]. Using scanning electron microscopy, transversal root cross-sections were analyzed, and the maximum depth of RCS penetration was measured (396 sections, in total, corresponded to the apical, middle, and coronary third). Results. Group AH Plus™/warm vertical compaction yielded the highest penetration depth – 1,165 μm, followed by EndoREZ™/cone-fit – 1,154 μm; the lowest depth was measured for EndoREZ™/warm vertical compaction – 502 μm. The mean value of the maximum penetration depth of RCS yielded 1,204 μm in the coronary thirds, 1,005 μm in the middle thirds, and 770 μm in the apical thirds. The AH Plus™ RCS penetrated deeper into dentinal tubules when the obturation techniques with heated gutta-percha were applied, while the opposite findings were obtained for the EndoREZ™ RCS. Conclusion. According to our research, the RCS penetration depth appears to be influenced by the RCS type used, as well as the obturation technique applied.

The morphology of the lingual papillae (filiform, foliate, fungiform, and vallate papillae) and the underlying connective tissue core of the red ruffed lemur (Varecia rubra) of a strepsirrhines species were studied using light and scanning electron microscopy. The filiform papillae distributed at the root of the tongue were larger than the structures distributed at the body and apex. Six to eight vallate papillae were arranged in a Y-shape at the border between the lingual body and the lingual root. Foliate papillae were observed at the posterior lateral border of the tongue. Scanning electron microscopy revealed a primary process and numerous auxiliary processes in the epithelial layer of filiform papillae. After epithelial removal, the connective tissue core of the filiform papilla showed several protrusions surrounding an oval-shaped depression that extended slightly posteriorly, and a large, maple-shaped filiform papilla was seen in the posterior portion of the tongue. The connective tissue cores of the fungiform papillae exhibited a longitudinally ridged cylindrical structure. The connective tissue core of the foliate papillae had numerous tubular projections arranged along a groove with a salivary gland conduit at the base. As a Lemuridae species, the appearance of the fungiform and filiform papillae of the red ruffed lemur is similar to that reported in previous studies of the ring-tailed lemur, with some differences, especially in the filiform papillary connective tissue core at the base and tongue body border. Abstract This study evaluate shaping ability of heat-treated NiTi-alloy instruments associated with different final irrigation protocols in flattened root canals. Thirty human mandibular incisors with flattened root canals were divided into 5 groups (n = 10): (XP) Original Protocol XP-endo Shaper; (XP-WT) Original Protocol XP-endo Shaper with working time variation; (XP-K) XP-endo Shaper with kinematics variation; (XP-WTK) XP-endo Shaper with kinematics and working time variations; (Hyflex) Hyflex CM. For the variation in working time protocols the same sample of the XP-endo Shaper groups with and without kinematic variation were used. To evaluate final irrigation protocols, groups 1, 3 and 5 were submitted to 3 protocols: (NI) No irrigation (n = 2); (CI) conventional irrigation (n = 4), and (EndoVac) irrigation (n = 4). The samples were scanned by microcomputed tomography and prepared for scanning electron microscopy evaluation. Quantitative data were evaluated using the parametric ANOVA test, with statistical significance level set at 5%, and qualitative data obtained were compared to establish the agreement between examiners through the Kappa test. It was observed that in the analysis of XP-endo Shaper protocols, the additional working time did not cause difference in any of parameters evaluated (p > 0.05) in relation to time recommended by manufacturer. Compared to Hyflex, XP-K showed highest mean volume increase (p < 0.05) and lowest percentage of untouched walls (p < 0.05). In the qualitative evaluation, final irrigation protocol with EndoVac provided the best cleaning results when associated with XP-K and with Hyflex. Thus, supplementary techniques are effective tools to enhance cleaning and to promote higher touch of walls during root canal preparation.

Bioengineered vascular grafts (VGs) have emerged as a promising alternative to the treatment of damaged or occlusive vessels. It is thought that polyurethane (PU)-based scaffolds possess suitable hemocompatibility and biomechanics comparable to those of normal blood vessels. In this study, we investigated the properties of electrospun scaffolds comprising various blends of biostable polycarbonate-based PU (Carbothane™ 3575A) and gelatin. Scaffolds were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, infra-red spectroscopy, small-angle x-ray scattering, stress-loading tests, and interactions with primary human cells and blood. Data from in vitro experiments demonstrated that a scaffold produced from a blend of 5% Carbothane™ 3575A and 10% gelatin has proven to be a suitable material for fabricating a small-diameter VG. A comparative in vivo study of such VGs and expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) grafts implanted in the abdominal aorta of Wistar rats was performed. Withania (Solanaceae, Solanoideae) is a widespread genus. Comparative macro-, micro-morphological, anatomical, and molecular features of this genus in Egypt were examined using light and scanning electron microscopy to reassess the conflicted taxonomic relationships between the two studied species. The most significant morphological differences that have been found were: the shape of the lamina, apex, anther, and stigma, and the ratio of calyx tube/lobe; anatomical examination of taxonomic interest are as follows: number of vascular bundles, presence of ears and distribution of accessory vascular bundles in petiole and shape of spongy cells, and number of lower parenchyma in the midrib region of the leaf; trichomes of both species showed no significant differences; pollen, and seed characters are of taxonomic significance in differentiation and characterization between them. Protein profiling revealed that W. somnifera has only conserved proteins, while W. obtusifolia possessed both conserved and additional proteins in their SDS-PAGE banding patterns. Eleven starts codon-targeted (ScoT) primers were applied and produced 96 amplicons with an average of 70.83% polymorphism/primer. W. obtusifolia generated more polymorphic bands and maintained monomorphic ones. SDS-PAGE disclosed that both Withania species were 50% related. While Scot-Dendrogram revealed that both Withania species were poorly related. So, protein and molecular analyses showed considerable genetic variations between these two species., (© 2024. The microstructure of a porous bioceramic bone graft, especially the pore architecture, plays a crucial role in the performance of the graft. Conventional bioceramic grafts typically feature a random, closed-pore structure, limiting biological activity to the periphery of the graft. This can lead to delay in full integration with the host site. Bioceramic forms with open through pores can perform better because their inner regions are accessible for natural bone remodeling. This study explores the influence of open through pores in a bioceramic graft on the migration and retention of the local cells in vitro , which will correlate to the rate of healing in vivo. Hydroxyapatite ceramic forms with aligned channels were fabricated using slip casting technique, employing sacrificial fibers. The sorption characteristics across the graft were evaluated using human osteosarcoma cell line. Seven-day cultures showed viable cells within the channels, confirmed by live/dead assay, scanning electron microscope analysis, and cytoskeletal staining, indicating successful cell colonization. The channel architecture effectively enhances cell migration and retention throughout its entire structure, suggesting potential applications in bone tissue engineering based on the results obtained., (© 2024 IOP Publishing Ltd. Purpose: To evaluate the long-term microtensile bond strength (µTBS) to dentin, water sorption (WSP) and solubility (WSL), and degree of conversion (DC) of self-adhesive resin composites (SACs)., Materials and Methods: The mid-coronal dentin of human molars was exposed, and teeth were randomly assigned to five groups according to the SACs (n &#61; 10): 1. FIT SA F03 (FIT); 2. Experimental (EXP); 3. Fusio Liquid Dentin (FLD); 4. Vertise Flow (VER); 5. Constic (CON). The µTBS was evaluated after 24 hours (24 h) and 6 months (6 m) storage. A scanning electron microscope examined failure modes and resin-dentin interfaces. The WSP and WSL (n &#61; 5) were evaluated following ISO 4049:2019 specifications, and DC (n &#61; 3) was measured using Raman spectroscopy. The statistical analyses were performed accepting a significance level of p &#61; 0.05., Results: FIT, EXP, and FLD produced significantly higher µTBS median values than VER and CON after 24 h and 6 m (p 0.05). After 6m, the µTBS median of FIT and EXP significantly decreased (p 0.05), while FLD, VER, and CON showed no significant difference (p > 0.05). FLD and CON exhibited lower WSP than FIT, EXP, and VER (p 0.05). FLD presented the lowest (p 0.05), and VER revealed the highest WSL (p 0.05). FIT and EXP showed the highest (p 0.05), and VER demonstrated the lowest DC (p 0.05)., Conclusions: Following the present study's design, SACs' bonding performance and physical properties remained restricted. Therefore, the application should be considered cautiously, and further clinical trials are necessary to evaluate their long-term performance.

To smell, fish rely on passive water flow into their olfactory chambers and through their olfactory rosettes to detect chemical signals in their aquatic environment. The olfactory rosette is made up of secondarily folded tissues called olfactory lamellae. The olfactory morphology of cartilaginous fishes varies widely in both rosette gross morphology and lamellar microstructure. Previous research has shown differences in lamellar sensory morphology depending on the position along the rosette in hammerheads (family Sphyrnidae). Here, we investigate if this pattern continues in members of two other chondrichthyan families: Squalidae and Chimaeridae. Using contrast-enhanced microCT and scanning electron microscopy, we investigated patterns in lamellar morphology based on lamellar position along the olfactory rosette in Pacific spiny dogfish (Squalus suckleyi) and spotted ratfish (Hydrolagus colliei). We describe the gross olfactory rosette anatomy and lamellar microstructure of both species. We also put forth a new method, combining 3D morphological microCT data with 2D SEM microstructure data to better approximate lamellar sensory surface area. We found that in both species, lamellae in the center of the rosette were larger with more secondary folds. However, we found no significant differences in lamellar sensory surface area among lamellar positions. Previously, differences in lamellar sensory morphology have been tied to the internal fluid dynamics of the olfactory chamber. It is possible that the internal flow dynamics of these species are like other chondrichthyan models, where water flow patterns differ in the lateral vs the medial part of the organ, and the consistent distribution of sensory tissue does not correspond to this flow. Alternatively, the olfactory morphology of these species may result in uniform flow patterns throughout the olfactory chamber, correlating with the consistent distribution of sensory tissue throughout the organ. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the osseointegration of titanium (Ti) implants with micro-nano textured surfaces functionalized with strontium additions (Sr) in a pre-clinical rat tibia model., Methodology: Ti commercially pure (cp-Ti) implants were installed bilaterally in the tibia of 64 Holtzman rats, divided into four experimental groups (n=16/group): (1) Machined surface - control (C); (2) Micro-nano textured surface treatment (MN); (3) Micro-nano textured surface with Sr2+ addition (MNSr); and (4) Micro-nano textured surface with a higher complementary addition of Sr2+ (MNSr+). In total, two experimental euthanasia periods were assessed at 15 and 45 days (n=8/period). The tibia was subjected to micro-computed tomography (μ-CT), histomorphometry with the EXAKT system, removal torque (TR) testing, and gene expression analysis by PCR-Array of 84 osteogenic markers. Gene expression and protein production of bone markers were performed in an in vitro model with MC3T3-E1 cells. The surface characteristics of the implants were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and laser scanning confocal microscopy., Results: SEM, confocal, and EDS analyses demonstrated the formation of uniform micro-nano textured surfaces in the MN group and Sr addition in the MNSr and MNSr+ groups. TR test indicated greater osseointegration in the 45-day period for treated surfaces. Histological analysis highlighted the benefits of the treatments, especially in cortical bone, in which an increase in bone-implant contact was found in groups MN (15 days) and MNSr (45 days) compared to the control group. Gene expression analysis of osteogenic activity markers showed modulation of various osteogenesis-related genes. According to the in vitro model, RT-qPCR and ELISA demonstrated that the treatments favored gene expression and production of osteoblastic differentiation markers., Conclusions: Micro-nano textured surface and Sr addition can effectively improve and accelerate implant osseointegration and is, therefore, an attractive approach to modifying titanium implant surfaces with significant potential in clinical practice.

Objective: To develop a novel calcium silver zeolite (Ca-Ag-Zeo) and assess its biocompatibility, physiochemical properties and antimicrobial effects., Methods: Ca-Ag-Zeo was synthesized using ion-exchange method with calcium chloride, silver nitrate and Zeolite X (Zeo). Silver zeolite X (Ag-Zeo) and Zeo were set as control. The chemical structure, morphology, crystal structure and elemental composition of Ca-Ag-Zeo was characterized by X-ray diffraction spectrum, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy, respectively. Its biocompatibility on the human gingival fibroblasts was assessed by cell counting kit-8 assay. Its physiochemical properties were determined by the released calcium and silver ion using Inductive Coupled Plasma Emission Spectrometry for up to 12 weeks. The antimicrobial properties on Streptococcus mutans, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus casei, and Candida albicans were assessed by minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) or minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) assay., Results: Ca-Ag-Zeo with a hexagonal cage structure was synthesized. As for biocompatibility, the half-maximal inhibitory concentration (± SD in mg/mL) of Ca-Ag-Zeo, Ag-Zeo and Zeo in human gingival fibroblasts were 0.52 ± 0.05, 0.15 ± 0.01 and 3.35 ± 0.58, respectively (Zeo > Ca-Ag-Zeo > Ag-Zeo; p < 0.05). As for physiochemical properties, the accumulated ion release (± SD in mg) of Ca-Ag-Zeo, Ag-Zeo and Zeo were 0.011 ± 0.003, 0 and 0 for calcium ion, respectively (Ca-Ag-Zeo > Ag-Zeo, Zeo; p < 0.001), and 0.213 ± 0.032, 0.209 ± 0.019 and 0 for silver ion, respectively (Ca-Ag-Zeo, Ag-Zeo > Zeo; p < 0.001). As for anti-microbial ability, the MBC/MFC (mg/mL) of Ca-Ag-Zeo, Ag-Zeo and Zeo were 32, 16 and > 256 against Streptococcus mutans; 32, 16, > 256 against Lactobacillus acidophilus; 16, 16, and 256 against Lactobacillus casei; 0.25, 0.125; and 2, 1, > 256 against Candida albicans, respectively., Conclusion: A novel Ca-Ag-Zeo was developed. It presented better biocompatibility compared to Ag-Zeo. It released calcium and silver ions sustainably, and it could inhibit the growth of common cariogenic microorganisms., (© 2024. Herein, tannic acid-tethered cellulose was developed as an efficient and selective sorbent for Mn 2 ⁺ removal from aqueous solutions. The modified cellulose was characterized through scanning electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and elemental analyses. Sorption performance was evaluated using various parameters, including pH, initial Mn 2 ⁺ concentration, contact time, and the presence of interfering ions. Results indicated that Mn 2 ⁺ removal was highly pH-dependent, with removal efficiency increasing from 8% at pH 2 to99% at pH 9, achieving a remarkable 99% removal rate within only 30 min, highlighting the rapidity of the cellulose sorption kinetics. The results of isotherm studies confirmed that the sorption conformed to the Langmuir model with a monolayer sorption mechanism. Using a sorbent dose of 0.05 g, 99% of Mn 2 ⁺ could be effectively eliminated from water, achieving a maximum sorption capacity of 32.2 mg/g dry-sorbent. The modified cellulose could be effectively regenerated using 0.5-M HCl or 0.1-M H₂SO₄, with no considerable deterioration in sorption performance after three sorption-regeneration cycles. Background: Different materials have been used as wound dressings after vital pulp therapies. Some of them have limitations such as delayed setting, difficult administration, slight degree of cytotoxicity, crown discoloration and high cost. Therefore, to overcome these disadvantages, composite scaffolds have been used in regenerative dentistry. This study aims to construct and characterize the physicochemical behavior of a novel injectable alginate hydrogel loaded with different bioactive glass nanoparticles in various concentrations as a regenerative pulpotomy filling material., Methods: Alginate hydrogels were prepared by dissolving alginate powder in alcoholic distilled water containing mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles (MBG NPs) or boron-doped MBG NPs (BMBG NPs) at 10 and 20 wt% concentrations. The mixture was stirred and incubated overnight in a water bath at 50 0 C to ensure complete solubility. A sterile dual-syringe system was used to mix the alginate solution with 20 wt% calcium chloride solution, forming the hydrogel upon extrusion. Then, constructed hydrogel specimens from all groups were characterized by FTIR, SEM, water uptake percentage (WA%), bioactivity and ion release, and cytotoxicity. Statistical analysis was done using One-Way ANOVA test for comparisons between groups, followed by multiple pairwise comparisons using Bonferroni adjusted significance level (p < 0.05)., Results: Alginate/BMBG loaded groups exhibited remarkable increase in porosity and pore size diameter [IIB1 (168), IIB2 (183) (µm)]. Similarly, WA% increased (~ 800%) which was statistically significant (p < 0.05). Alginate/BMBG loaded groups exhibited the strongest bioactive capability displaying prominent clusters of hydroxyapatite precipitates on hydrogel surfaces. Ca/P ratio of precipitates in IIA2 and IIB1 (1.6) were like Ca/P ratio for stoichiometric pure hydroxyapatite (1.67). MTT assay data revealed that the cell viability % of human gingival fibroblast cells have declined with increasing the concentration of both powders and hydrogel extracts in all groups after 24 and 48 h but still higher than the accepted cell viability % of (˃70%)., Conclusions: The outstanding laboratory performance of the injectable alginate/BMBGNPs (20 wt%) composite hydrogel suggested it as promising candidate for pulpotomy filling material potentially enhancing dentin regeneration in clinical applications., (© 2024. Background: Partial coverage concepts have met the main goal of conservative dentistry. Vonlays, which combine features of veneers and onlays, are a recent alternative to full coverage designs and overlay partial coverage restorations. This in vitro study was conducted to compare the fracture resistance of the newly introduced pressable zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate with pressable lithium disilicate ceramic and to determine the optimal preparation design for partial coverage on upper premolars., Methods: Fifty-two duplicated epoxy resin dies were prepared following vonlay and overlay preparation guidelines. For each preparation (n = 26), the specimens were divided into two subgroups to be restored with lithium disilicate (IPS e.max Press) or zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate (Vita Ambria) (n = 13 each). Ceramic vonlays and overlays were bonded using dual cure resin cement, subjected to thermomechanical fatigue, and the load to fracture was tested by using a universal testing machine. The specimens were fractographically analyzed via scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The normality of the fracture resistance data was checked using the Shapiro‒Wilk test and Q‒Q plots, and two-way ANOVA was used to assess the effect of the type of preparation and ceramic material on the fracture resistance., Results: The group of overlays restored with zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate showed the highest mean fracture load (1218.69 N), while the group of vonlays restored with lithium disilicate had the lowest mean fracture resistance (967.15 N). The effect of preparation design and material type on fracture resistance was significant for both factors, p = 0.003 and p < 0.0001, respectively. Different features of the fracture surfaces, such as arrest lines, hackles, and directions of crack propagation, were observed., Conclusions: Zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate exhibited greater resistance to fracture compared to lithium disilicate, making it a potential substitute for partial coverage restorations. The studies presented in this paper constitute the first scientific attempt to interpret the manner whereby notched implements made of scapulae were made and used. These implements have been found at numerous European and non-European sites, usually dated to the Neolithic-Early Iron Age (predominantly the Early Bronze Age). Research has examined these products since the beginning of the 20th century, resulting in the development of several hypotheses regarding their functions. This paper presents the analysis results of 41 such artefacts from the early Bronze Age defensive settlement in Bruszczewo (central Poland). This is the largest collection of these products from a single site worldwide. The artefacts were subjected to multi-aspect traceological tests (both technological and functional) using optical, metallographic, and scanning electron microscopes. The residues identified on their surfaces were analysed using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-rays spectroscopy. Moreover, the studies reported herein involved extensive experimental research. Consequently, the chain of operations followed in producing these tools was reconstructed and the use-wear traces present on their surfaces were classified; it was determined that these tools were most likely used for threshing cereals but might also have been used for threshing legumes. Background: This study aimed to compare the marginal adaptation of a single customized gutta percha cone with calcium silicate-based sealer versus mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) and Biodentine apical plugs in simulated immature permanent teeth., Methods: Thirty-nine extracted human maxillary anterior teeth were selected, prepared to simulate immature permanent teeth with an apical diameter 1.1 mm, placed in moist foam and divided into three groups. Group 1: Obturation with a single customized gutta percha cone and calcium silicate sealer. Group 2: MTA apical plug. Group 3: Biodentine apical plug. After incubation, teeth were horizontally sectioned at 1 mm and 3 mm from the apex and marginal adaptation was evaluated using scanning electron microscope (SEM)., Results: Biodentine showed the least mean gap size at both 1 and 3 mm from the apex with no statistically significant differences compared to MTA (p > 0.05). Clematis , one of the largest genera of the family Ranunculaceae, has a wide array of morphological variation and is considered the most difficult group of taxa in terms of infrageneric discrimination. This study assessed the leaf micromorphological features of 19 Clematis taxa (16 species and three varieties) found in Korea. The leaf surface features were studied under scanning electron microscopy, and the stomatal counting and measurement were carried out under light microscopy. Clematis are hypostomatic, meaning the stomata are only found on the abaxial surface of the leaf. Observed taxa showed near uniformity in the epidermal cell type, structure, and morphology on both surfaces of the leaf. Differences were observed in the presence and absence and/or abundance of trichomes on both the adaxial and abaxial surfaces, the epidermal cell boundary, and the periclinal and anticlinal wall of the cells. Differences were also observed in the number of the epidermal cells connected with the stomata on the abaxial surface, with small differences noted in epidermal cell shapes. The ANOVA showed a significant variation in the stomata density in the studied taxa ( P < 0.0001). The cluster analysis based on 13 leaf micromorphological features generated four major clusters. These results indicated similarities in certain key leaf micromorphological features among taxa from the Tubulosae , Clematis , and Virona sections. In the genus Clematis , as with other morphological characteristics, using leaf micromorphological characters alone, which possess limited taxonomic value, proves inadequate for resolving infrageneric relationships. This study aimed to evaluate chitosan (CS)-based formulations loaded with 5% sodium fluoride (NaF) and/or 10% nanohydroxyapatite (nHA) to remineralize the demineralized primary tooth enamel surface. Ninety enamel blocks were demineralized and were divided into six groups (n = 15): (1) CS-based hydrogel, (2) CS-based hydrogel loaded with NaF, (3) CS-based hydrogel loaded with nHA, (4) CS-based hydrogel loaded with NaF and nHA, (5) 5% NaF varnish, and (6) negative control with no intervention. After intervention, the specimens were pH cycled by 2 h immersion in demineralizing solution and 22 h immersion in remineralizing solution for 8 days. The remineralization effects were evaluated by Vickers microhardness measurements and field emission scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (FESEM-EDS). The best mean ± SD percentage microhardness recovery in remineralized enamel (%REMH) was found in group 4 (56.90 ± 5.49). The %REMH of groups 2 (30.74 ± 3.51) and 5 (29.23 ± 5.65) were statistically the same (p = 0.943). FESEM images confirmed partial coverage of the porous demineralized enamel with a newly formed mineralized layer. Based on EDS findings, the Ca/P ratio values of the treated enamel surfaces with CS-based hydrogels ranged between 1.71 and 1.87, and the highest F content was noticed in group 2 (1.02 ± 0.03). Although, all tested CS-based hydrogels demonstrated the potential to repair demineralized enamel, nHA- and NaF-containing CS-based hydrogel showed the highest remineralization effect. Scanning electron microscopy studies of three paratype specimens (two males and one female) of Ascarophis parupenei Moravec, Orecchia & Paggi, 1988, an intestinal parasite of the marine fish Parupeneus indicus (Shaw) in the Indian Ocean, made it possible to redescribe in detail the cephalic structures of this nematode as well as the morphology of the male caudal end. The presence of non-bilobed sublabia, phasmids in both males and females, bifurcated deirids, well-developed precloacal cuticular ridges (area rugosa) and a ventral median caudal protuberance in the male are reported in this species for the first time. The general morphology and measurements of A. parupenei somewhat resemble those of Rasheedia novaecaledoniensis Moravec & Justine, 2018 described from the same host species (P. indicus) from off New Caledonia, but both species clearly differ from each other by the shape and structure of pseudolabia and the anterior portion of the digestive tract, belonging thus to different nematode families (Cystidicolidae and Physalopteridae, respectively)., (© 2024. Purpose: To compare the endothelial coverage of different stents in porcine carotid arteries. Research problem: How effective are polyurethane stents (PU) and PU + rapamycin (PU + RAPA) compared to bare-metal stents on endothelial coverage by neointima in pigs after 28 days?, Methods: The methodology had two phases for an interventional, experimental, prospective study, with three Moura pigs, 12 weeks old and weighing between 19 and 22.5 kg. In phase I, eight stents were implanted in carotid arteries; three stents coated with PU, three coated with PU + RAPA, and two without coating. After 28 days, phase II was carried out, consisting of euthanasia, removal of the stents, to evaluate the exposed area of the stent struts, and the percentage of endothelialization through optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy., Results: The eight stents implanted with ultrasound sizing and post-dilation with a larger diameter balloon were analyzed by Doppler ultrasound, intravascular ultrasound, and angiography after 28 days., Conclusions: This study showed complete endothelial coverage by the endoluminal neointima of the stent struts, good integration and coverage with the arterial wall, with no exposed struts showing the presence of intimal hyperplasia (whitish tissue).

The aim of this study was to evaluate the wettability and adhesion of self-organized TiO2 nanotubes formed on the surface of 8 commercially pure titanium (CP-Ti) disks and 12 dental implants (n = 12) by anodization in a glycerol-H2O (50-50 v/v) electrolyte containing NH4F. Two disk specimens were not submitted to anodization (controls). The nanotubes thus obtained had average dimensions of 50 nm in diameter by 900 nm in length. The treated disk specimens were stored for 2, 14 and 35 days (n = 2), and the wettability of their surfaces was evaluated with a goniometer at the end of each storing period. The adhesion of nanotubes to titanium was evaluated by field emission scanning electron microscopy after subjecting the 12 implants to a simulation of clinical stress in two-part synthetic bone blocks. After installing the implants with the application of an insertion torque, the two halves of the block were separated, and the implants were removed. The nanotubes remained adhered to the substrate, with no apparent deformation. The contact angles after 14 days and 35 days were 16.47° and 17.97°, respectively, values significantly higher than that observed at 2 days, which was 9.24° (p < 0.05). It was concluded that the method of anodic oxidation tested promoted the formation of a surface suitable for clinical use, containing nanotubes with levels of wettability and adhesion to titanium compatible with those obtained by other methods found in the literature. The wettability, however, did not prove stable over the tested storage periods.

Background: Tyrosine-rich amelogenin peptide (TRAP) is the main amelogenin digestion product in the developmental enamel matrix. It has been shown to promote remineralization of demineralized enamel in our previous study. However, direct evidence of the effect of TRAP on the morphology and nanostructure of crystal growth on an enamel surface has not been reported. This study aimed to examine the effect of TRAP on the morphology of calcium phosphate crystals grown on early enamel erosion using a pH-cycling model., Methods: Eroded lesions were produced in human premolars by 30-second immersion in 37% phosphoric acid. Forty-five samples of eroded human premolar enamel blocks were selected and randomly divided into 3 groups: deionized water (DDW, negative control); 100 µg/mL TRAP, and 2 ppm sodium fluoride (NaF, positive control group). For 14 days, the specimens were exposed to a pH-cycling model. Using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) methods, the surface morphology, calcium-phosphorus ratio, and enamel surface roughness were examined. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) were used to assess crystal characteristics., Results: After pH-cycling, compared to the two control groups, the surface of the eroded enamel of the peptide TRAP group shows a large number of new, densely arranged rod-like crystals, parallel to each other, regularly arranged, forming an ordered structure, with crystal morphology similar to that of natural enamel. The crystals are mostly hydroxyapatite (HA)., Conclusion: This study demonstrates that the peptide TRAP modulates the formation of hydroxyapatite in eroded enamel and that the newly formed crystals resemble natural enamel crystals and promote the remineralization of enamel, providing a promising biomaterial for remineralization treatment of enamel lesions., (© 2024. Laser texturing seems to be a promising technique for reducing bacterial adhesion on titanium implant surfaces. This work aims to demonstrate the possibility of obtaining a functionally orientated surface of titanium implant elements with a specific architecture with specific bacteriological and photocatalytic properties. Femtosecond laser-generated surface structures, such as laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS, wrinkles), grooves, and spikes on titanium, have been characterised by XRD, Raman spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The photocatalytic activity of the titanium surfaces produced was tested based on the degradation effect of methylene blue (MB). The correlation between the photocatalytic activity of TiO 2 coatings and their morphology and structure has been analysed. Features related to the size, shape, and distribution of the roughness patterns were found to influence the adhesion of the bacterial strain on different surfaces. Background: The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the effect of polishing post-treatment process on the torque loss ratio and microgap of Selective Laser Melting (SLM) abutments before and after mechanical cycling test through improving the surface roughness of the implant-abutment interface., Materials and Methods: Forty SLM abutments were fabricated, with 20 underwent minor back-cutting, designated as polishing, in the implant-abutment interface. The abutments were divided into three groups: SLM abutments (group A), original abutments (group B), and polished SLM abutments (group C), each containing 20 abutments. Surface roughness was evaluated using a laser microscope. Implant-abutment specimens were subjected to mechanical cycling test, and disassembly torque values were measured before and after. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to measure microgap after longitudinal sectioning of specimens. Correlation between surface roughness, torque loss ratio, and microgap were evaluated. LSD's test and Tamhane's T2 comparison were used to analyze the data (α = 0.05)., Results: The Sz value of polished SLM abutments (6.86 ± 0.64 μm) demonstrated a significant reduction compared to SLM abutments (26.52 ± 7.12 μm). The torque loss ratio of polished SLM abutments (24.16%) was significantly lower than SLM abutments (58.26%), while no statistically significant difference that original abutments (18.23%). The implant-abutment microgap of polished SLM abutments (2.38 ± 1.39 μm) was significantly lower than SLM abutments (8.69 ± 5.30 μm), and this difference was not statistically significant with original abutments (1.87 ± 0.81 μm). A significant positive correlation was identified between Sz values and the ratio of torque loss after cycling test (r = 0.903, P < 0.01), as well as Sz values and the microgap for all specimens in SLM abutments and polished SLM abutments (r = 0.800, P < 0.01)., Conclusion: The findings of this study indicated that the polishing step of minor back-cutting can lead to a notable improvement in the roughness of SLM abutments interface, which subsequently optimized the implant-abutment fit. Objective: Purpose of this research was to examine the onset, progression and wear rates of dental erosion in an established mouse model., Material and Methods: Dental erosion in mice was experimentally induced, and the acidic effects of cola drink on their teeth after 2, 4 and 6-weeks were closely analysed by scanning electron microscopy. The tooth height and enamel or dentin loss were established.  Results: The dental erosion on the molars showed clear progression from 2 to 6 weeks. By the 2-week mark, a significant portion of enamel was already eroded, revealing the dentin on the lingual cusps. When adjusted for attritional wear, molars exposed to cola for 2 weeks showed a 35% drop in lingual tooth height compared to controls (533 μm vs. 818 μm). At 4 and 6 weeks, the cola-exposed group continued to display decreased lingual tooth heights by 40% (476 μm vs. 799 μm) and 43% (440 μm vs. 767 μm), respectively., Conclusion: This study revealed significant acidic effects of cola drink on mouse molars as early as 2 weeks. These findings highlight the challenge of monitoring dental erosion clinically and underscore the importance of early preventive and intervention measures.

Eukaryotic chromosome segregation requires kinetochores, multi-megadalton protein machines that assemble on the centromeres of chromosomes and mediate attachments to dynamic spindle microtubules. Kinetochores are built from numerous complexes, and there has been progress in structural studies on recombinant subassemblies. However, there is limited structural information on native kinetochore architecture. To address this, we purified functional, native kinetochores from the thermophilic yeast Kluyveromyces marxianus and examined them by electron microscopy (EM), cryoelectron tomography (cryo-ET), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The kinetochores are extremely large, flexible assemblies that exhibit features consistent with prior models. We assigned kinetochore polarity by visualizing their interactions with microtubules and locating the microtubule binder, Ndc80c. Background: White spot lesions are a widespread undesirable effect, especially prevalent during fixed orthodontic treatments. The study compared the in vitro enamel remineralization potential of undemineralized dentin matrix (UDD) versus chicken eggshell powder (CESP) for artificially induced enamel lesions., Methods: 100 caries-free and sound maxillary premolars were randomly divided into four groups each contain 25 teeth: Group I (Baseline): No treatment was done to the enamel surface. Group II (Negative control ): The enamel surface of the teeth underwent demineralization using demineralizing solution to create artificial carious lesions then kept in artificial saliva. Group III (CESP treated): After demineralizing the tooth surface, the teeth have been suspended in the CESP remineralizing solution. Group IV (UDD treated): After enamel demineralization, the teeth were suspended in UDD remineralizing solution. The remineralization potential was assessed by Vickers microhardness testing, scanning electron microscopic examination (SEM), and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX)., Results: The current study demonstrated an increase in the mean microhardness of CESP and UDD-treated groups; however, It was nearer to the baseline level in the UDD group. SEM imaging revealed greater enamel remineralization in the UDD group compared to the remaining groups. The UDD group disclosed complete coverage for the prismatic enamel compared to the CESP group, which revealed a partially remineralized enamel surface. Interestingly, the Ca/P ratio increased significantly in the CESP group compared to the negative control group. In contrast, a higher significant increase in the mean Ca/P ratios was recorded in the UDD group compared to the test groups., Conclusion: biomimetic UDD and CESP powder should be utilized to treat enamel early carious lesions. Laser lithotripsy mechanisms can cause the chemical decomposition of stone components and the emergence of different end products. However, the potentially toxic end products formed during thulium fiber laser (TFL) lithotripsy of cystine stones have not been sufficiently investigated. The aim of our in vitro study is to analyze the chemical content of the gas products formed during the fragmentation of cystine stone with TFL. Human renal calculi consisting of 100% pure cystine, calcium oxalate monohydrate, or uric acid were fragmented separately with TFL in experimental setups and observed for gas release. After the lithotripsy, only the cystine stones showed gas formation. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was used to analyze the gas qualitatively, and scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX) and X-ray diffraction was used to examine the dried cystine stone fragments. Fragmentation of the cystine stones released free cystine, sulfur, hydrogen sulfide, and carbon disulfide gas. The SEM-EDX and X-ray diffraction analyses revealed that the free cystine in the dried fragments contained 43.1% oxygen, 28.7% sulfur, 16.1% nitrogen, and 12.1% carbon atoms according to atomic weight. The detection of potentially toxic gases after lithotripsy of cystine stones with TFL indicates a risk of in vivo production. Awareness needs to be increased among healthcare professionals to prevent potential inhalation and systemic toxicity for patients and operating room personnel during TFL lithotripsy of cystine stones., (© 2024. In this study, we conducted two heat treatment processes, namely double aging (DA) and solid solution followed by double aging (SA), on the Inconel 718 alloy fabricated by selective laser melting (SLM). The aim was to investigate the microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of Inconel 718 under different heat treatment conditions. To achieve this, we employed advanced techniques such as Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), x-ray diffraction (XRD), Tofwerk time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometer (TOF-SIMS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Our experimental findings reveal the presence of cellular high-density dislocation substructures in the as-received (AR) specimens, with a significant accumulation of Laves phase precipitates at grain boundaries and subgrain boundaries. After the DA treatment, the cellular substructure persists, with higher concentrations of γ" and γ' strengthened phases compared to AR specimen. Conversely, the SA specimen undergoes almost complete recrystallization, resulting in the dissolution of brittle Laves phases and a substantial increase in the content of strengthening phase γ'' and γ'. As a consequence of the precipitation of the γ'' and γ' strengthened phase and the modification of the microstructure, the material exhibits enhanced strength and hardness, albeit at the expense of reduced plasticity. The increasing prevalence of coal mine dust-related lung diseases in coal miners calls for urgent and meticulous scrutiny of airborne respirable coal mine dust (RCMD), specifically focusing on particles at the nano-level. This necessity is driven by expanding research, including the insights revealed in this paper, that establish the presence and significantly increased toxicity of nano-sized coal dust particles in contrast to their larger counterparts. This study presents an incontrovertible visual proof of these tiny particulates in samples collected from underground mines, utilizing advanced techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The intricate elemental composition of nano-sized coal dust identified through EDS analysis reveals the presence of elements such as silica and iron, which are known to contribute to lung pathologies when inhaled over prolonged periods. The outcomes of the statistical analyses reveal significant relationships between particle size and elemental composition, highlighting that smaller particles tend to have higher carbon content, while larger particles exhibit increased concentrations of elements like silica and aluminum. These analyses underscore the complex interactions within nano-sized coal dust, providing critical insights into their behavior, transport, and health impacts. The nano-sized coal dust could invade the alveoli, carrying these toxic elements from where they are impossible to exhale. The revelation of nano-sized coal dust's existence and the associated health hazards necessitate their incorporation into the regulatory framework governing the coal mining industry. This study lays the groundwork for heightened protective measures for miners, urging the invention of state-of-the-art sampling instruments, comprehensive physicochemical profiling of RCMD nanoparticles, and the pursuit of groundbreaking remedies to neutralize their toxic impact. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) is a crucial tool for studying microstructures of ceramic materials. However, the current practice heavily relies on manual efforts to extract porosity from SEM images. To address this issue, we propose PSTNet (Pyramid Segmentation Transformer Net) for grain and pore segmentation in SEM images, which merges multi-scale feature maps through operations like recombination and upsampling to predict and generate segmentation maps. These maps are used to predict the corresponding porosity at ceramic grain boundaries. To increase segmentation accuracy and minimize loss, we employ several strategies. (1) We train the micro-pore detection and segmentation model using publicly available Al2O3 and custom Y2O3 ceramic SEM images. We calculate the pixel percentage of segmented pores in SEM images to determine the surface porosity at the corresponding locations. (2) Utilizing high-temperature hot pressing sintering, we prepared and captured scanning electron microscope images of Y2O3 ceramics, with which a Y2O3 ceramic dataset was constructed through preprocessing and annotation. (3) We employed segmentation penalty cross-entropy loss, smooth L1 loss, and structural similarity (SSIM) loss as the constituent terms of a joint loss function. The segmentation penalty cross-entropy loss helps suppress segmentation loss bias, smooth L1 loss is utilized to reduce noise in images, and incorporating structural similarity into the loss function computation guides the model to better learn structural features of images, significantly improving the accuracy and robustness of semantic segmentation. (4) In the decoder stage, we utilized an improved version of the multi-head attention mechanism (MHA) for feature fusion, leading to a significant enhancement in model performance. Our model training is based on publicly available laser-sintered Al2O3 ceramic datasets and self-made high-temperature hot-pressed sintered Y2O3 ceramic datasets, and validation has been completed. Our Pix Acc score improves over the baseline by 12.2%, 86.52 vs. 76.01, and the mIoU score improves from by 25.5%, 69.10 vs. 51.49. With the development of industry and modern manufacturing, nondegradable low-density polyethylene (LDPE) has been widely used, posing a rising environmental hazard to natural ecosystems and public health. In this study, we isolated a series of LDPE-degrading fungi from landfill sites and carried out LDPE degradation experiments by combining highly efficient degrading fungi in pairs. The results showed that the mixed microorganisms composed of Alternaria sp. CPEF-1 and Trametes sp. PE2F-4 (H-3 group) had a greater degradation effect on heat-treated LDPE (T-LDPE). After 30 days of inoculation with combination strain H-3, the weight loss rate of the T-LDPE film was approximately 154% higher than that of the untreated LDPE (U-LDPE) film, and the weight loss rate reached 0.66 ± 0.06%. Environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were used to further investigate the biodegradation impacts of T-LDPE, including the changes on the surface and depolymerization of the LDPE films during the fungal degradation process. Our findings revealed that the combined fungal treatment is more effective at degrading T-LDPE than the single strain treatment, and it is expected that properly altering the composition of the microbial community can help lessen the detrimental impact of plastics on the environment., (© 2024. Identifying evidence of human modification of extinct animal remains, such as Pleistocene megafauna, is challenging due to the similarity of anthropogenic and non-anthropogenic taphonomic features observed under optical microscopy. Here, we re-investigate a Late Pleistocene ground sloth tooth from northeast Brazil, previously suggested as human-modified based only on optical observation. To characterize the macro- and micro-morphological characteristics of the marks preserved in this tooth and evaluate potential human modification, we used stereomicroscope and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) supplemented by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), UV photoluminescence (UV/PL), synchrotron-based X-ray fluorescence (SR-XRF), and synchrotron micro-computed tomography (SR-µCT). These methods allowed us to discriminate non-anthropogenic taphonomic features (root and sedimentary damage), anthropogenic marks, and histological features. The latter shows the infiltration of exogenous elements into the dentine from the sediments. Our evidence demonstrates the sequence of anthropogenic and non-anthropogenic taphonomic modification of this tooth and supports its initial intentional modification by humans. We highlight the benefits of emerging imaging and spectral imaging techniques to investigate and diagnose human modification in fossil and archaeological records and propose that human modification of tooth tissues should be further considered when studying possibly anthropogenically altered fossil remains., (© 2024. Plant cuticles consist of the lipid polyester cutin and associated waxes with compositions varying widely between plant species and organs. Here, we aimed to provide a comparative analysis of the dark-glossy adaxial and pale-glaucous abaxial sides of Drimys winteri (Winteraceae) leaves. Scanning electron microscopy showed nanotubular wax crystals lining the entire abaxial side of the leaf (including stomatal pores), while the adaxial side had patches of mixed platelet/tubule crystals and smooth areas between them. Consecutive treatments for wax removal and cutin depolymerization revealed that the waxes were deposited on a cutin network with micron-scale cavities across the entire abaxial surface including the stomata pores, and on a microscopically smooth cutin surface on the adaxial side of the leaf. Gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry and flame ionization detection showed that the wax mixtures on both sides of the leaf were complex mixtures of very-long-chain compounds dominated by the secondary alcohol nonacosan-10-ol and alkanediols with one hydroxyl on C-10. It is therefore very likely that the characteristic tubular wax crystals of both leaf sides are formed by these alcohols and diols. Further secondary alcohols and alkanediols, as well as ketols and alkanetriols with one functional group on C-10, were identified based on mass spectral fragmentation patterns. The similarities between all these mid-chain-functionalized compounds suggest that they are derived from nonacosan-10-ol via regio-specific hydroxylation reactions, likely catalyzed by three P450-dependent monooxygenases with different regio-specificities., (© The Author(s) 2024. The herbicide mixture diclosulam + halauxifen appears to be an alternative for the control of Conyza spp.; however, the spray volume may result in different spray deposition effects on the target and, therefore, on the control. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of different spray volumes of diclosulam + halauxifen on the control of and damage to the leaf surface of Conyza spp. The experiment was conducted in the field in a randomized block design with four replications. Diclosulam + halauxifen (23.52 g ai ha-1 + 6.32 g ae ha-1) was applied to Conyza spp. at average heights greater than 10 cm, followed by sequential application of glufosinate ammonium (500 g ai ha-1) after 14 days. Different spray volumes (200, 150, 100, 80 and 50 L ha-1) were used. The percentage of droplet coverage was evaluated using hydrosensitive paper and analyzed using DropScan software. After 24 hours of initial application, the leaves were collected for scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Although the different spray volumes did not affect the control, faster necrosis effects were observed at 150 and 200 L ha-1. Moreover, the trichome and stomatal density decreased at a spray volume of 200 L ha-1, indicating greater initial damage at this spray volume. Thus, increased spray spray volumes result in increased spray spray deposition, damage to leaf structures and consequently increased control speed.

Objectives: This study aimed to assess the surface roughness, surface free energy (SFE), and shear bond strength (SBS) on a lithium disilicate glass-ceramic surface following varying etching protocols (time variation) and application of silane either with or without adhesive material., Methods and Materials: Lithium disilicate glassceramic (LDGC) computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacture (CAD/CAM) blocks were cut using a slow-speed cutting mechanism. CAD/CAM blocks were then evaluated for surface roughness, 6 groups (n=20); SFE,12 groups (n=5); and SBS, 10 groups (n=10). The cut CAD/CAM blocks were randomly allocated to 28 groups. Groups were based on the following: 30 or 90 seconds of etching with 9% hydrofluoric acid (HF); application or absence of silane coupling agent (Sil); and application or absence of adhesive (Adh).The control group (Cont) had untreated surfaces. Unetched surfaces were surveyed with only silane (Sil), only adhesive (Adh), or silane+adhesive (SilAdh). Further etched groups were HF30 with HF for 30 seconds, HF30-Sil, HF30-Adh, and HF30-SilAdh. Alternative 90-second etching times produced similar groups: HF90, HF90-Sil, HF90-Adh, and HF90-SilAdh. A digital profilometer was used to assess the surface roughness of specimens, and two readings were recorded. Sessile drop analysis was used to examine SFE specimens, and the OWRK model was modified to measure liquid surface tension. A universal testing machine (UltraTester, Ultradent Products, Inc, South Jordan, UT, USA) was utilized for the SBS test, with the crosshead speed set at 0.5 mm/min until failure. Representative treated specimens from each group were submitted to surface morphological evaluation and chemical analysis using scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDXS) (n=3). After data collection, evaluation using one- or two-way analysis of variance and the post-hoc Tukey test (α=5%) was conducted., Results: A longer etching time of 90 seconds produced a rougher surface. After the 90-second etching process, SFE displayed the greatest values; nevertheless, the use of silane did not affect SFE. For every group examined, the application of silane followed by adhesive resulted in an increase in SBS and more stable bonding over time. SEM/EDXS showed that etching times did affect the amount of cerium on the surface and altered surface morphology., Conclusions: Higher and more consistent bond strengths have been observed with longer etching periods. During the investigation of firearm-related incidents, gunshot residues (GSR) can be collected on the scene and individuals (e.g., shooters or bystanders). Their analysis can give valuable information for the reconstruction of the events. Since GSR collection on persons of interest generally occurs a few minutes to hours after discharge, knowledge is needed to understand how organic (O), and inorganic (I) residues are transferred and persist. In this research, the quantities of OGSR and IGSR were assessed on the right and left hands, forearms, face, and nostrils of four shooters. Specimens were collected immediately before the discharge (shooter's blank specimens) and shortly after (30 min) using carbon adhesive stubs. Organic compounds were first extracted from the collection device and analysed using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS). Subsequently, IGSR particles were detected on the same stub using scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (SEM/EDS). Shooter's blank specimen analysis revealed background contamination of both O and IGSR in the shooter's environment, predominantly attributed to the presence of an indoor shooting range. However, the background quantities generally remained below the associated 30-minute specimen. Thirty minutes after a discharge, higher quantities were generally detected on the shooter's right and left hands than on other collection regions for both GSR types. Forearms and face emerged as interesting collection alternatives, especially in cases where a person of interest may have washed their hands in the interval between the discharge and collection. In contrast, very low amounts of GSR were detected in the nostrils. To investigate the effects of lactic acid etching on the immediate and aged bond strength of the resin-dentin bonding interface, the resin-dentin bonding interface was evaluated 24 hours and 6 months later. A total of 42 isolated third molars were randomly divided into 6 experimental groups according to different lactate concentration (35%, 40%, 45%) and acid etching time (30 s, 45 s), with 37% phosphoric acid etching 15 s as a control. In each group, dentin samples were etched under different acidic conditions and bonded with Adper Single Bond 2 (3M ESPE) as directed. The immediate group was immediately stored in deionized water at 37 °C for 24 h, and the aging group was stored in artificial saliva at 37 °C for 6 months. Immediate and aged bond strengths were measured by a micro-tensile tester, and the specimen fracture surface was observed under a microscope. 14 isolated third molars were randomly divided into 7 groups, and each group was etched with acid. Collagen fibers morphology in dentin was examined after gradient dehydration with ethanol by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Statistically, there was no difference between the resin-dentin immediate bonding strength of 35% lactic acid for 30 s and 37% phosphoric acid for 15 s, but the aged bond strength was greater than that of the phosphoric acid group. According to scanning electron microscope observations, the collagen fiber morphology in 35% and 40% lactate etching dentin 30 s groups was relatively intact compared with other groups. Nickel-titanium (NiTi) instruments offer many advantages during endodontic instrumentation; however, the fracture risk within the canal remains a concern. Manufacturers continuously develop and introduce instruments to the market with supposedly enhanced cyclic fatigue resistance and increased flexibility, achieved through different proprietary manufacturing processes, the details of which have not been made public. In recent years, two rotary systems specially designed for deciduous teeth have been commercially available, but information about their performance is lacking. This investigation aimed to identify which manufacturing process provides better cyclic fatigue resistance: the AF-H Wire technology used in the AF baby rotary files (AF-f) or the CM-Wire technology used in the i3 Gold deciduous teeth rotary files (i3G-f). Forty rotary International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 25/04 files were tested in artificial canals with a standard geometry of 60° angle and 2.5 mm radius until fracture. The number of cycles to fracture was calculated, and the length of the fragments was measured. A scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to examine the fracture surfaces and fragments. Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) was used to determine the percentage weight of NiTi in each file. The statistical analysis (Mann-Whitney test) showed that the cyclic fatigue resistance of the AF-f was significantly higher ( p < 0.0001) than that of the i3G-f. Additionally, there was a significant difference ( p = 0.0419) in the length of the fractured fragments. All instruments showed one or more types of manufacturing defects and presented similar NiTi percentages by weight. Nudibranchs, with their mesmerizing diversity and ecological significance, play crucial roles in marine ecosystems. Central to their feeding prowess is the radula, a chitinous structure with diverse morphologies adapted to prey preferences and feeding strategies. This study focuses on elucidating wear coping mechanisms in radular teeth of carnivorous molluscs, employing Dendronotus lacteus (Dendronotidae) and Flabellina affinis (Flabellinidae) as model species. Both species forage on hydrozoans. Through scanning electron microscopy, confocal laser scanning microscopy, nanoindentation, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, the biomechanical and compositional properties of their teeth were analyzed. Notably, tooth coatings, composed of calcium (Ca) or silicon (Si) and high hardness and stiffness compared to the internal tooth structure, with varying mineral contents across tooth regions and ontogenetic zones, were found. The presence of the hard and stiff tooth coatings highlight their role in enhancing wear resistance. The heterogeneities in the autofluorescence patterns related to the distribution of Ca and Si of the coatings. Overall, this study provides into the biomechanical adaptations of nudibranch radular teeth, shedding light on the intricate interplay between tooth structure, elemental composition, and ecological function in marine molluscs., (© 2024 The Author(s). Purpose: This study aimed to assess the impact of battery levels in single-peak and multi-peak light-curing units (LCUs) on irradiance, and their effects on glass fiber post push-out bond strength to root dentin and the degree of conversion of dual-cure universal resin cement., Methods and Materials: Sixty bovine roots underwent endodontic treatment and were randomly distributed into 6 groups (n=10), formed by combining two LCUs (single-peak and multipeak) and three battery levels (100%, 50%, and 10%). A spectrophotometer measured irradiance (mW/ cm2) and spectral irradiance (mW/cm2/nm). Push-out bond strength (PBS) tests occurred at three root regions (cervical, middle, and apical), with optical and scanning electron microscopy for failure mode analysis. Degree of conversion (DC) was evaluated across the root regions. Data were analyzed using two-way repeated measures ANOVA and the Tukey HSD test. The Fisher exact test verified failure modes (α=0.05)., Results: As multipeak LCU battery levels decreased, emitted irradiance also diminished, with notable PBS reductions in the apical thirds. Failure modes were influenced by different conditions, primarily exhibiting mixed modes. Battery levels significantly impacted DC in the multipeak LCU, particularly in the cervical region, while the single-peak LCU exhibited DC reduction at the 10% battery level in the cervical region., Conclusions: Emitted irradiance, resin cement DC, and glass fiber post bond strength to root dentin may be influenced by varying cordless LCUs and battery levels., (©Operative Dentistry, 2024.)

Introduction: White spot lesions (WSLs) represent a prominent pathology encountered during orthodontic treatment, originating from enamel demineralization induced by the accumulation of bacterial biofilms. The previously developed bioinspired enamel coating form of self-assembling antimicrobial peptide D-GL13K exhibited antimicrobial activity and enhanced acid impermeability, offering a potential solution to prevent demineralization. The primary aim of this investigation is to assess the in vivo anti-demineralization properties and biocompatibility of the D-GL13K coating., Methods: A rat model was developed to assess the antimicrobial enamel coating during fixed orthodontic treatment. The anti-demineralization efficacy attributed to the D-GL13K coating was evaluated by employing optical coherence tomography, Vickers microhardness testing, and scanning electron microscopy. The biocompatibility of the D-GL13K coating was investigated through histologic observations of vital organs and tissues using hematoxylin and eosin., Results: The D-GL13K coating demonstrated significant anti-demineralization effects, evidenced by reduced demineralization depth analyzed through optical coherence tomography and enhanced Vickers hardness than in the noncoated control group, showcasing the coating's potential to protect teeth from WSLs. Scanning electron microscopy analysis further elucidated the diminished enamel damage observed in the group treated with D-GL13K. Importantly, histologic examination of vital organs and tissues using hematoxylin and eosin staining revealed no overt disparities between the D-GL13K coated group and the noncoated control group., Conclusions: The D-GL13K enamel coating demonstrated promising anti-demineralization and biocompatibility properties in a rat model, thereby suggesting its potential for averting WSLs after orthodontic interventions. Aim: The osteogenic potential of new premixed calcium-silicate-containing bioceramic sealers (Ca-Si sealers) was tested with porcine vascular wall-mesenchymal stem cells (pVW-MSCs)., Methodology: Two Ca-Si-containing sealers: Ceraseal (MetaBiomed, Cheong-si, South Korea) and AH Plus Bioceramic (Maruchi, Wonju-si, South Korea), and an epoxy resin sealer (AH Plus; Dentsply, Konstanz, Germany) as a control, were prepared according to the manufacturers' indications. All samples were allowed to set for 100% of their setting time in a sterile humid cabinet at 37°C and 95% relative humidity. pVW-MSC seeding efficiency and osteogenic differentiation were analysed as marker of gene/protein expression for up to 12 days. Mineralization assay and immunofluorescence staining were performed and evaluated over a period of 21 days. Statistical analyses were conducted using one-way analysis of variance (p < .05). Additional samples were prepared and stored under the same conditions and inspected using an environmental scanning electron microscope equipped with an energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy system., Results: Significantly higher cell seeding efficiency (p < .05) was observed for both Ca-Si sealers from day 8. pVW-MSCs showed a significant shift towards the osteogenic lineage only when seeded in contact with Ca-Si sealers. Gene expression of osteopontin was upregulated significantly. Collagen I and osteocalcin were clearly expressed by cells in contact with Ca-Si sealers. Mineralization granules were observed in Alizarin red assays and confocal laser scanning microscopy analysis of both Ca-Si sealers. No gene expression or granule mineralization were observed on the epoxy resin sealer., Conclusions: Premixed Ca-Si sealers displayed a higher potential for osteogenic activity on pVW-MSCs. Epoxy resin sealer was unable to induce any osteogenic activity. Objectives: To assess and compare the microtensile dentin bond strength (μTBS) and interfacial micromorphology of three universal adhesives., Methods: 96 human molars were assigned to three universal adhesives: Single Bond Universal (SBU), CLEARFIL Universal Bond Quick (UBQ), and RE-GEN Universal Adhesive (REGEN). Adhesives were applied in self-etch mode. SBU and REGEN were applied following the manufacturers' instructions. UBQ was divided into two subgroups: one following the manufacturer's instructions (UBQ Short) and the other with an extended application time (UBQ Extended). Teeth were restored with nanohybrid resin composite. Specimens were divided into immediate and delayed subgroups. The delayed subgroups were stored for 6 months and subjected to 5000 thermocycles. μTBS was tested, and failure mode was analyzed. Interfacial micromorphology was assessed using a scanning electron microscope. The data were statistically analyzed (p⟨ 0.05)., Results: The adhesive choice, aging, and their interaction significantly affected μTBS. SBU exhibited the highest immediate μTBS, comparable to UBQ (Extended) and REGEN, and significantly higher than UBQ (Short). In delayed testing, SBU outperformed the other adhesives., Conclusions: Aging negatively affected the μTBS of UBQ and REGEN, while SBU wasn't affected. This laboratory study aimed to evaluate the effects of zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) slurry surface treatment on the bond strength of ultratranslucent zirconia to resin cement using different ceramic primers. The surface morphology was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), and the interface was evaluated by SEM. Additionally, the phase composition was analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Specimens of zirconia (n=120) were obtained and divided into two groups according to the surface treatment: (1) airborne particle abrasion with 50-μm aluminum oxide (n=60) and (2) ZrO2 slurry (n=60). The 60 specimens were then further divided into three groups (n=20) according to the ceramic primer application: no primer (NP), Monobond N (MB), and Clearfil ceramic primer (CP). Four resin cement cylinders were built on each ceramic specimen. Half of the specimens (n=10) were subjected to a microshear bond strength (μSBS) test after 24 hours of storage in distilled water, and the other half (n=10) were subjected to a μSBS test after thermocycling. Additional specimens were prepared for SEM, AFM, and XRD analyses. According to the Kruskal-Wallis and Student-Newman-Keuls post hoc tests, the μSBS values were significantly higher for MB and CP than for NP (p<0.05), and there were no significant differences in μSBS for both surface treatments associated with MB and CP after 24 hours of storage (p>0.05). Thermocycling significantly decreased the μSBS values for all specimens, especially for the NP groups and ZrO2 slurry treatment groups, and gaps at the interface were observed by SEM. SEM and AFM analyses showed agglomerate-type irregularities on the ceramic surface for ZrO2 slurry treatment. XRD spectra showed that ZrO2 slurry did not cause phase transformation. It was concluded that ZrO2 slurry promoted irregularities on the ultratranslucent zirconia surface, not causing phase transformation; moreover, the values of μSBS were comparable to those of airborne particle abrasion with aluminum oxide. The molecularly imprinted polymer was synthesized using 3-aminopropylthiosilane-methacrylic acid monomer (APTES-MAA) as the functional monomer and 10-hydroxycamptothecin (HCPT) as the template, based on computer simulation. The hybrid molecularly imprinted polymers (HMIPs) were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, particle size measurement, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. It has been shown that HMIPs are irregularly shaped and porous, with particle sizes ranging mainly from 130 to 211 nm. At 298 K, the HMIPs exhibit a maximum adsorption capacity of 8.35 mg·g -1 for HCPT and demonstrate good adsorption specificity ( α  = 5.38). The pseudo-second-order reaction mechanism suggests that the equilibrium adsorption capacity of HCPT on HMIPs is 8.11 mg·g -1 . Finally, HCPT was successfully separated and enriched from the extract of Camptotheca acuminata Decne. seeds using HMIPs.

Efficient separation of actinide elements from molten salts employed in pyroprocessing can significantly diminish the radiological hazards and oversight duration associated with spent nuclear fuel storage. The lanthanum content of waste salts is very high compared to actinides, leading to the co-electrodeposition of both groups of elements for conventional electrochemical techniques. Due to the difficulty in separating the two groups of elements, the feasibility of the density-based separation using liquid bismuth and intermetallics was explored. Hafnium was used as a stand-in for actinide elements with physical properties mirroring those of actinide-laden Bi-Hf intermetallics. Conversely, cerium was chosen to represent lanthanides. This study delved into the formation and spatial distribution of bismuth intermetallics under varying concentration ratios and cooling durations. Comprehensive characterization was achieved using scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive spectrometry. The analysis showed that Bi-Ce particles were formed and distributed in the upper layer of the Bi ingot, and Bi-(Ce, Hf) particles containing both Ce and Hf in the lower layer. The findings underscore the viability of density-based separation while highlighting the intricacies related to intermetallic coprecipitation. This study discusses the micro-level structural details of Cichorieae pollen sources elucidated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and explains their symmetry and morphometry. The in-depth knowledge from the electron ultrastructure of Asteraceae pollen has provided insights into enhanced pollen morphology, and the antimicrobial significance of species under study presents novel avenues for their natural defense mechanisms in the development of antimicrobial agents. In this research, both quantitative and qualitative features of pollen were examined. The pollen grains are prolate-spheroidal and oblate-spheroidal in shape, characterized by a maximum polar diameter of 55.6-61.0 μm and a maximum equatorial distance of 68.3-74.4 μm. SEM reveals various configurations such as echinate perforate-tectate, psilate, and echino-lophate perforate. The Cichorieae species have significant antimicrobial efficacy and are promising sources for the development of novel antimicrobial drugs with potential implications in pharmaceutical and healthcare industries. SEM analysis of Cichorieae pollens has provided remarkable insights into their unique structures, revealing diverse shapes and surface ornamentations, which can be used for accurate Asteraceae species identification. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS: SEM provides unique pollen surface structures and patterns of Chicory pollen grains. Chemical composition of Chicory botanical sources provides valuable information on their potential as antimicrobial agents.
