The discovery of new White Dwarfs (WDs) is extremely important for understanding the kinematics and dynamics of the local stellar population. They are evolutionary signatures of the Milky Way, as most of stars pass through this evolutionary stage. Gaia’s astrometric accuracy allows more detailed studies of WDs and many other stars. We have constructed the luminosity function for McCook & Sion White Dwarf catalogue objects based on distances provided by Gaia EDR3. We have revealed among 640 First Byurakan Survey UV-excess stars objects with proper motions (PM) >10 mas/yr. Adopting 50 km/s upper limit for tangential velocities, we calculated maximum distances and absolute magnitudes and estimated luminosity types for these objects, revealing 185 probable (M > 8), 69 possible WDs (6 < M < 8) and 42 candidate subdwarfs/WDs. The Digitized First Byurakan Survey (DFBS) is more efficient for discovery of new WDs by spectral energy distribution. Using Gaia data for accurate parallaxes and distances in combination with DFBS low-dispersion spectra and additional multiwavelength data, during the pilot survey we have revealed thousands of new WDs and candidate subdwarf/WDs. Many of them are subject for studies on binarity and variability. Gaia DR3 will provide huge amount of data to confirm these WDs and reveal many more such objects.

This article is a presentation of a project which is a statistical study of white dwarfs’ properties carried out based on the sample of the First Byurakan Survey Blue Stellar Objects (FBS BSOs) and the Catalogue of White Dwarfs. Using these results, we have searched and will continue to search for new white dwarfs by means of Gaia accurate astrometry. The discovery and study of new White Dwarfs (WDs) is extremely important for understanding the kinematics and dynamics of the local stellar population. We have carried out a statistical analysis of the White Dwarfs Catalogue to establish their average physical properties. Based on these data, we have searched for new WDs using Gaia EDR3 accurate astrometry. It provides huge amount of data to confirm WDs and reveal many more such objects. Gaia’s astrometric accuracy allows more detailed studies of WDs and many other stars. Using Gaia accurate data in combination with SDSS and DFBS low-dispersion spectra and additional multiwavelength data, we have revealed many new WDs. Many of them are subject for studies on binarity and variability (including a number of subtypes, e.g. ZZ Ceti stars (pulsating WDs), cataclysmic variables, etc.). WDs among FBS blue stellar objects at high galactic latitudes have been searched and revealed. Search for high galactic latitude WDs in DFBS have also been carried out. Using the revealed and calculated characteristics, a statistical study of WD properties is being done.

A review on the Big Data in Astronomy and Space Sciences; all-sky and large-area astronomical surveys and their catalogued data over the whole range of electromagnetic spectrum, from gamma-ray to radio, coming from both ground-based and space telescopes, as well as most important surveys giving optical images, proper motions, variability and spectroscopic data will be presented, as well as data coming from Space Sciences; both from Earth and Space explorations. Most important astronomical databases and archives are reviewed as well. They are powerful sources for many-sided efficient research using the Astrophysical Virtual Observatory (AVO) environment. It is shown that using and analysis of Big Data accumulated in astronomy lead to many new discoveries. It is also important that Astronomy plays a leading role in the development of inter- and multi- disciplinary sciences; Astrochemistry, Astrobiology, Astrogeology, Space Research, Astroinformatics, Astrostatistics, as well as Archaeoastronomy and Astronomy in Culture. The exchange of data between science disciplines makes possible new research and better understanding of the Universe. The International Science Council (ISC) World Data System (WDS) maintains various data supporting joint research and synergy of efforts by scientists of various fields.

Humankind has always sought to recognize the nature of various sky related phenomena and tried to give them explanations. It is especially vivid in ancient cultures, many of which are related to the Middle East. The purpose of this study is to identify ancient Armenian’s pantheistic and cosmological perceptions, world view, notions and beliefs. By this study we answer the question “How did the Universe work in Ancient Armenian Highland?” The paper focuses on the structure of the Universe and many phenomena of nature that have always had major influence on ancient Armenians thinking. Here we weave together astronomy, anthropology and mythology of Armenia, and scientific thinking revealed in local astronomy traditions. The initial review of the study covers Moses of Khoren, Yeznik of Koghb, Anania Shirakatsi and other 5th-7th centuries historians’ and scientists’ records about the Universe related superstitious beliefs and cosmological understanding. By discussing and comparing Universe structure in various regional traditions, myths, folk songs and phraseological units we very often came across “seven worlds”, “seven earths” and “seven layers” concepts. We draw parallels between scientific and mythological Earth and Heaven and thus find similar number of layers on both of the ancient and modern thinking. In the article we also give some details about the tripartite structure of the Universe and how these parts are connected with axis. This axis is either a column or a Cosmic Tree (Kenatz Tsar). In Armenian culture the preliminary meanings of the Kenatz Tsar are more vivid in folk songs (Jan gyulums), plays, epic, and so on, which was subsequently mixed with religious and spiritual views. We conclude that the perception of the Universe structure and celestial objects had a significant impact on culture and worldview of the people of the Armenian Highland; particularly it was one of the bases of the regional cultural diversity.

A review is given on archaeoastronomy in Armenia and astronomical knowledge reflected in the Armenian culture. Astronomy in Armenia was popular since ancient times and Armenia is rich in its astronomical heritage, such as the names of the constellations, ancient observatories, Armenian rock art (numerous petroglyphs of astronomical content), ancient and medieval Armenian calendars, astronomical terms and names used in Armenian language since II-I millennia B.C., records of astronomical events by ancient Armenians (e.g. Halley’s comet in 87 B.C., supernovae explosion in 1054), the astronomical heritage of the Armenian medieval great thinker Anania Shirakatsi’s (612-685), medieval sky maps and astronomical devices by Ghukas (Luca) Vanandetsi (XVII-XVIII centuries) and Mkhitar Sebastatsi (1676-1749), etc. For systemization and further regular studies, we have created a webpage devoted to Armenian archaeoastronomical matters at Armenian Astronomical Society (ArAS) website. Issues on astronomy in culture include astronomy in ancient Armenian cultures, ethnoastronomy, astronomy in Armenian religion and mythology, astronomy and astrology, astronomy in folklore and poetry, astronomy in arts, astrolinguistics and astroheraldry. A similar webpage for Astronomy in Armenian Culture is being created at ArAS website and a permanent section “Archaeoastronomy and Astronomy in Culture” has been created in ArAS Electronic Newsletter. Several meetings on this topic have been organized in Armenia during 2007-2014, including the archaeoastronomical meetings in 2012 and 2014, and a number of books have been published. Several institutions are related to these studies coordinated by Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory (BAO) and researchers from the fields of astronomy, history, archaeology, literature, linguistics, etc. are involved.

International audience; Searching with a "naked eye" in a planetary data archive takes a considerable time. This work must be done in an automatic way. However, the planetary data archive is subject to a constant change (new elements, new version of analysis, new parameters). Furthermore, there are several archives for a same object, thus, obtaining reliable information requires a sequential search of several different archives. Workflows developed in the frame of the virtual observatories (VO), can use all collections of integrated astronomical data archives and software tools that utilize computer networks to create an environment in which research can be conducted. Several countries have initiated national virtual observatory programs that combine existing databases from ground-based and orbiting observatories and make them easily accessible to researchers. As a result, data from all the world's major observatories will be available to all users and to the public. This is significant not only because of the immense volume of astronomical data but also because the data on stars and galaxies has been compiled from observations in a variety of wavelengths - optical, radio, infrared, gamma ray, X-ray and more. In a virtual observatory environment, all of this data is integrated so that it can be synthesized and used in a given study. In this paper, we show how to develop a workflow using a selection of the virtual observatory tools in the case of two hot topics: asteroids and exopanets (51 Peg b).

The main purpose of this article is to present the results and activities of physics and earth sciences heavy user communities of Armenian National Grid Initiative (ArmNGI) using computational or storage resources of Armenian National Grid infrastructure (ArmGrid).

The Digitized First Byurakan Survey (DFBS) is the digitized version of the famous Markarian Survey. It is the largest low-dispersion spectroscopic survey of the sky, covering 17,000 square degrees at galactic latitudes |b|>15. DFBS provides images and extracted spectra for all objects present in the FBS plates. Programs were developed to compute astrometric solution, extract spectra, and apply wavelength and photometric calibration for objects. A DFBS database and catalog has been assembled containing data for nearly 20,000,000 objects. A classification scheme for the DFBS spectra is being developed. The Armenian Virtual Observatory is based on the DFBS database and other large-area surveys and catalogue data.

International audience; The main goal of the Armenian Virtual Observatory is to develop efficient methods for science projects based on the digitized famous Markarian survey (Digitized First Byurakan Survey, DFBS) and other large astronomical databases, both Armenian and international. Two groups of projects are especially productive: search for new interesting objects of definite types by low-dispersion template spectra, and optical identifications of new gamma, X-ray, IR and radio sources. The first one is based on modeling of spectra for a number of types of objects: QSOs, Seyfert galaxies, white dwarfs, subdwarfs, cataclysmic variables, planetary nebulae, C stars, etc. Each kind of object appears in the DFBS with its typical SED and spectral lines (for objects having broad lines only). The search criteria define how many objects will be found for further study, and may restrict these numbers leaving with the best candidates. At present, a number of science projects of search for new objects have been started: search for blue stellar objects, search for extremely red objects, search for variable objects, etc. Optical identifications have been proven to be rather efficient for IR sources from IRAS PSC and FSC. Tests have been carried out for X-ray and radio sources as well.

International audience; Numerous new Solar System objects, mainly asteroids, are still detected nowadays but their physical and dynamical characteristics remain not accurately determined, until dedicated observations and analysis are made. However, the Virtual Observatory is a perfect framework to search for this characterization by data mining. We are developing two studies for this goal by exploring the DENIS infrared and DFBS spectroscopic surveys. In order to scan the survey catalogues and to search for Solar System objects, we have developed a VO compliant workflow founded on the use of a recent VO tool labelled SkyBoT (Sky Bodies Tracker) (Berthier et al. 2005) and on the VizieR service provided by CDS. A public version of SkyBoT is implemented in the sky atlas Aladin since January 2006. It allows us to quickly get the precise coordinates of the asteroids, planets and natural satellites in any star field, provided we know its center, its size and the precise date of the exposure (between 1949 and 2009). Our data mining workflow performs cone search queries on SkyBoT and VizieR to extract all the known astronomical objects observed by the survey. Then the sources which are detected in the survey are correlated with the known objects to determine the matched and unmatched objects.
