We examine the impact of livelihood diversification on food insecurity amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Our analysis uses household panel data from Ethiopia, Malawi, and Nigeria in which the first round was collected immediately prior to the pandemic and extends through multiple rounds of monthly data collection during the pandemic. Using this pre- and post-outbreak data, and guided by a pre-analysis plan, we estimate the causal effect of livelihood diversification on food insecurity. Our results do not support the hypothesis that livelihood diversification boosts household resilience. Though income diversification may serve as an effective coping mechanism for small-scale shocks, we find that for a disaster on the scale of the pandemic this strategy is not effective. Policymakers looking to prepare for the increased occurrence of large-scale disasters will need to grapple with the fact that coping strategies that gave people hope in the past may fail them as they try to cope with the future.

Impact evaluations of new technologies are critical to assessing and improving investment in national and international development goals. Yet many of these technologies are introduced and promoted at times and in places that lack the necessary data to conduct a strongly identified impact evaluation. We present a new method that combines remotely sensed Earth observation (EO) data, recent advances in machine learning, and socioeconomic survey data so as to allow researchers to conduct impact evaluations of a certain class of technologies when traditional economic data is missing. To demonstrate our approach, we study stress tolerant rice varieties (STRVs) that were introduced in Bangladesh more than a decade ago. Using 20 years of EO data on rice production and flooding, we fail to replicate existing RCT and field trial evidence of STRV effectiveness. We validate this failure to replicate with administrative and household panel data as well as conduct Monte Carlo simulations to test the sensitivity to mismeasurement of past evidence on the effectiveness of STRVs. Our findings speak to conducting large scale, long-term impact evaluations to verify external validity of small scale experimental data while also laying out a path for researchers to conduct similar evaluations in other data poor settings.

To study the size and strain rate dependency of copper polycrystalline microstructures, a multi-layered copper/Al$_2$O$_3$ thin film was deposited on a Si substrate using a hybrid deposition system (combining physical vapour and atomic layer deposition). High temperature treatment was applied on the "As Deposited" material with ultrafine-grained structure to increase the average grain size, resulting in a "Heat Treated" state with microcrystalline structure. Focused ion beam milling was employed to create square shaped micropillars with two different sizes, that were subjected to compressive loading at various (0.001/s - 1000/s) strain rates. The detected two distinct anomalies in the strain rate sensitivity behavior appearing at high strain rates could be related to the pillar diameter and the grain size of the deformed samples. The Al$_2$O$_3$ interlayer studied by transmission electron microscopy showed excellent thermal stability and grain boundary pinning by precipitation, also resulting in the homogeneous deformation of the pillars and preventing shear localization. Geometrically necessary dislocation densities estimated by high (angular) resolution electron backscatter diffraction presented inhomogeneous dislocation distribution within the deformed pillar volumes, that is attributed to the proximity of the sample edges. Finally, the Al$_2$O$_3$ interlayers successfully suppressed any possible recrystallization processes, contributing to the excellent film stability, that makes the proposed coating ideal to be operating under extreme conditions.

Fiber-based distribution of triggered, entangled, single-photon pairs is a key requirement for the future development of terrestrial quantum networks. In this context, semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are promising candidates for deterministic sources of on-demand polarization-entangled photon pairs. So far, the best QD polarization-entangled-pair sources emit in the near-infrared wavelength regime, where the transmission distance in deployed fibers is limited. Here, to be compatible with existing fiber network infrastructures, bi-directional polarization-conserving quantum frequency conversion (QFC) is employed to convert the QD emission from \unit[780]{nm} to telecom wavelengths. We show the preservation of polarization entanglement after QFC (fidelity to Bell state $F_{\phi^+, conv}=0.972\pm0.003$) of the biexciton transition. As a step towards real-world applicability, high entanglement fidelities ($F_{\phi^+, loop}=0.945\pm0.005$) after the propagation of one photon of the entangled pair along a \unit[35.8]{km} field installed standard single mode fiber link are reported. Furthermore, we successfully demonstrate a second polarization-conversing QFC step back to \unit[780]{nm} preserving entanglement ($F_{\phi^+, back}=0.903\pm0.005$). This further prepares the way for interfacing quantum light to various quantum memories.

Single-photon emitters integrated in optical micro-cavities are key elements in quantum communication applications. However, optimizing their emission properties and achieving efficient cavity coupling remain significant challenges. In this study, we investigate semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) emitting in the telecom O-band and integrate them in an open fiber-cavity. Such cavities offer spatial and spectral tunability and intrinsic fiber-coupling. The design promises high collection efficiency and enables the investigation of multiple emitters in heterogeneous samples. We observe a reduction of the decay times of several individual emitters by up to a factor of $2.46(2)$ due to the Purcell effect. We comprehensively analyze the current limitations of the system, including cavity and emitter properties, the impact of the observed regime where cavity and emitter linewidths are comparable, as well as the mechanical fluctuations of the cavity length. Machine leaning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) enable new methods for localization and sensing in next-generation networks to fulfill a wide range of use cases. These approaches rely on learning approaches that require large amounts of training and validation data. This paper addresses the data generation bottleneck to develop and validate such methods by proposing an integrated toolchain based on deterministic channel modeling and radio propagation simulation. The toolchain is demonstrated exemplary for scenario classification to obtain localization-related channel parameters within an aircraft cabin environment.

The paper discusses the increasing use of hybridized sensor information for GNSS-based localization and navigation, including the use of 3D map-aided GNSS positioning and terrestrial systems based on different geometric measurement principles. However, both GNSS and terrestrial systems are subject to negative impacts from the propagation environment, which can violate the assumptions of conventionally applied parametric state estimators. Furthermore, dynamic parametric state estimation does not account for multi-modalities within the state space leading to an information loss within the prediction step. In addition, the synchronization of non-deterministic multi-rate measurement systems needs to be accounted. In order to address these challenges, the paper proposes the use of a non-parametric filtering method, specifically a 3DMA multi-epoch Grid Filter, for the tight integration of GNSS and terrestrial signals. Specifically, the fusion of GNSS, Ultra-wide Band (UWB) and vehicle motion data is introduced based on a discrete state representation. Algorithmic challenges, including the use of different measurement models and time synchronization, are addressed. In order to evaluate the proposed method, real-world tests were conducted on an urban automotive testbed in both static and dynamic scenarios. We empirically show that we achieve sub-meter accuracy in the static scenario by averaging a positioning error of $0.64$ m, whereas in the dynamic scenario the average positioning error amounts to $1.62$ m. The paper provides a proof-of-concept of the introduced method and shows the feasibility of the inclusion of terrestrial signals in a 3DMA positioning framework in order to further enhance localization in GNSS-degraded environments.

Zinc alloys have emerged as promising candidates for biodegradable materials due to their remarkable biocompatibility and favorable mechanical characteristics. The incorporation of alloying elements plays an essential role in advancing the tensile strength of Zn alloys. Nevertheless, achieving uniform dispersion of these elements poses challenges due to chemical segregation during solidification. In this study, rapid solidification followed by high-pressure torsion was successfully employed to fabricate Zn-Li-Mn-Mg-Cu alloys characterized by ultrafine-grained microstructures with evenly distributed nanometric intermetallic phases. A comprehensive examination, including phase composition, microstructural evolution, tensile properties and deformation mechanisms, was conducted. The impact of varying annealing temperatures on microstructural stability was systematically examined. The combined implementation of rapid solidification and high-pressure torsion yielded alloys with an average grain size below 360 nm, thereby demonstrating exceptional mechanical properties including yield stress (YS), ultimate tensile strength (UTS), and elongation to failure (Ef) equal to at least 325+-6 MPa, 350+-8 MPa and 40+-11 %, respectively. Heat treatment notably augmented the mechanical properties, resulting in a YS = 440+-11 MPa and UTS = 491+-6 MPa, while preserving plasticity (Ef = 23+-4 %) in the Zn-0.33Li-0.27Mn-0.14Mg-0.1Cu alloy. Nanoindentation strain rate jump tests identified thermally activated mechanisms and grain boundary sliding as dominant deformation mechanisms.

The manuscript discusses the increasing use of location-aware radio communication systems to support operational processes for the demanding aircraft cabin environment. In this context, the challenges for evaluation and integration of radio-based localization systems in the connected cabin are specifically addressed by proposing a hybrid deterministic and stochastic simulation approach, including both model-based ray-tracing and empirical residual simulation. The simulation approach is detailed in the manuscript and a methodology for applying and evaluating localization methods based on obtained geometric relations is conducted. This can also be used as a data generation and validation tool for data-driven localization methods, which further increase the localization accuracy and robustness. The derived location information can in return be used in order to perform operational prediction and optimization for efficient and sustainable passenger handling. A dataset derived from the introduced simulation platform is publicly available.

The mechanical performance of metallic metamaterials with 3-dimensional solid frames is typically a combination of the geometrical effect ("architecture") and the characteristic size effects of the base material ("microstructure"). In this study, for the first time, the temperature- and rate-dependent mechanical response of copper microlattices has been investigated. The microlattices were fabricated via a localized electrodeposition in liquid (LEL) process which enables high-precision additive manufacturing of metal at the micro-scale. The metal microlattices possess a unique microstructure with micron sized grains that are rich with randomly oriented growth twins and near-ideal nodal connectivity. Importantly, copper microlattices exhibited unique temperature (-150 and 25 degree C) and strain rate (0.001~100 s-1) dependent deformation behavior during in situ micromechanical testing. Systematic compression tests of fully dense copper micropillars, equivalent in diameter and length to the struts of the microlattice at comparable extreme loading conditions, allow us to investigate the intrinsic deformation mechanism of copper. Combined with the post-mortem microstructural analysis, substantial shifts in deformation mechanisms depending on the temperature and strain rate were revealed. On the one hand, at room temperature (25 degree C), dislocation slip based plastic deformation occurs and leads to a localized deformation of the micropillars. On the other hand, at cryogenic temperature (-150 degree C), mechanical twinning occurs and leads to relatively homogeneous deformation of the micropillars. Based on the intrinsic deformation mechanisms of copper, the temperature and strain rate dependent deformation behavior of microlattices could be explained.

A future quantum internet is expected to generate, distribute, store and process quantum bits (qubits) over the globe by linking different quantum nodes via quantum states of light. To facilitate the long-haul operations, quantum repeaters, the building blocks for a long-distance quantum network, have to be operated in the telecom wavelengths to take advantage of both the low-loss fiber network and the well-established technologies for optical communications. Semiconductors quantum dots (QDs) so far have exhibited exceptional performances as key elements, i.e., quantum light sources and spin-photon interfaces, for quantum repeaters, but only in the near-infrared (NIR) regime. Therefore, the development of high-performance telecom-band QD devices is highly desirable for a future solid-state quantum internet based on fiber networks. In this review, we present the physics and the technological developments towards epitaxial QD devices emitting at the telecom O- and C-bands for quantum networks by using advanced epitaxial growth for direct telecom emission, and quantum frequency conversion (QFC) for telecom-band down-conversion. Traditionally, increasing compositional complexity and chemical diversity of high entropy alloy ceramics whilst maintaining a stable single-phase solid solution has been a primary design strategy for the development of new ceramics. However, only a handful have shown properties that justify the increased alloying content. Here, we unveil a groundbreaking strategy based on deviation from conventional equimolar composition towards non-equimolar composition space, enabling tuning the metastability level of the supersaturated single-phase solid solution. By employing high-temperature micromechanical testing of refractory metal-based high entropy nitrides, we found that the activation of an additional strengthening mechanism upon metastable phase decomposition propels the yield strength of a non-equimolar nitride at 1000 C to a staggering 6.9 GPa, that is 40 % higher than the most robust equimolar nitride. We show that the inherent instability triggers the decomposition of the solid solution with non-equimolar composition at high temperatures, inducing strengthening due to the coherency stress of a spinodally modulated structure, combined with the lattice resistance of the product solid solution phase. Long-range, terrestrial quantum networks will require high brightness single-photon sources emitting in the telecom C-band for maximum transmission rate. Many applications additionally demand triggered operation with high indistinguishability and narrow spectral linewidth. This would enable the efficient implementation of photonic gate operations and photon storage in quantum memories, as for instance required for a quantum repeater. Especially, semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) have shown these properties in the near-infrared regime. However, the simultaneous demonstration of all these properties in the telecom C-band has been elusive. Here, we present a coherently (incoherently) optically-pumped narrow-band (0.8 GHz) triggered single-photon source in the telecom C-band. The source shows simultaneously high single-photon purity with $g^{(2)}(0) = 0.026$ ($g^{(2)}(0) = 0.014$), high two-photon interference visibility of 0.508 (0.664) and high application-ready rates of 0.75 MHz (1.45 MHz) of polarized photons. The source is based on a QD coupled to a circular Bragg grating cavity combined with spectral filtering. Coherent (incoherent) operation is performed via the novel SUPER scheme (phonon-assisted excitation).

The integration of on-demand quantum emitters into photonic integrated circuits (PICs) has drawn much of attention in recent years, as it promises a scalable implementation of quantum information schemes. A central property for several applications is the indistinguishability of the emitted photons. In this regard, GaAs quantum dots (QDs) obtained by droplet etching epitaxy show excellent performances with visibilities close to one for both individual and remote emitters. Therefore, the realization of these QDs into PICs is highly appealing. Here, we show the first implementation in this direction, realizing the key passive elements needed in PICs, i.e. single-mode waveguides (WGs) with integrated GaAs-QDs, which can be coherently controlled, as well as beamsplitters. We study both the statistical distribution of wavelength, linewidth and decay times of the excitonic line of multiple QDs, as well as the quantum optical properties of individual emitters under resonant excitation. Here, we achieve single-photon purities as high as $1-\text{g}^{(2)}(0)=0.929\pm0.009$ as well as two-photon interference visibilities of up to V$_{\text{TPI}}=0.939\pm0.004$ for two consecutively emitted photons.

Quantum key distribution (QKD) enables the transmission of information that is secure against general attacks by eavesdroppers. The use of on-demand quantum light sources in QKD protocols is expected to help improve security and maximum tolerable loss. Semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are a promising building block for quantum communication applications because of the deterministic emission of single photons with high brightness and low multiphoton contribution. Here we report on the first intercity QKD experiment using a bright deterministic single photon source. A BB84 protocol based on polarisation encoding is realised using the high-rate single photons in the telecommunication C-band emitted from a semiconductor QD embedded in a circular Bragg grating structure. Utilising the 79 km long link with 25.49 dB loss (equivalent to 130 km for the direct-connected optical fibre) between the German cities of Hannover and Braunschweig, a record-high secret key bits per pulse of 4.8 * 10^{-5} with an average quantum bit error ratio of ~ 0.65 % are demonstrated. An asymptotic maximum tolerable loss of 28.11 dB is found, corresponding to a length of 144 km of standard telecommunication fibre. Deterministic semiconductor sources therefore challenge state-of-the-art QKD protocols and have the potential to excel in measurement device independent protocols and quantum repeater applications., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

The discovery of new functional materials is one of the key challenges in materials science. Combinatorial high-throughput approaches using reactive sputtering are commonly employed to screen unexplored phase spaces. During reactive combinatorial deposition the process conditions are rarely optimized, which can lead to poor crystallinity of the thin films. In addition, sputtering at shallow deposition angles can lead to off-axis preferential orientation of the grains. This can make the results from a conventional structural phase screening ambiguous. Here we perform a combinatorial screening of the Zn-Ta-N phase space with the aim to synthesize the novel semiconductor Zn2TaN3. While the results of the XRD phase screening are inconclusive, including chemical state analysis mapping in our workflow allows us to see a very clear discontinuity in the evolution of the Ta binding environment. This is indicative of the formation of a new ternary phase. In additional experiments, we isolate the material and perform a detailed characterization confirming the formation of single phase WZ-Zn2TaN3. Besides the formation of the new ternary nitride, we map the functional properties of ZnxTa1-xN and report previously unreported clean chemical state analysis for Zn3N2, TaN and Zn2TaN3. Overall, the results of this study showcase common challenges in high-throughput materials screening and highlight the merit of employing characterization techniques sensitive towards changes in the materials' short-range order and chemical state.

The focused ion beam (FIB) is a powerful tool for the fabrication, modification and characterization of materials down to the nanoscale. Starting with the gallium FIB, which was originally intended for photomask repair in the semiconductor industry, there are now many different types of FIB that are commercially available. These instruments use a range of ion species and are applied broadly in materials science, physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, and even archaeology. The goal of this roadmap is to provide an overview of FIB instrumentation, theory, techniques and applications. By viewing FIB developments through the lens of the various research communities, we aim to identify future pathways for ion source and instrumentation development as well as emerging applications, and the scope for improved understanding of the complex interplay of ion-solid interactions. We intend to provide a guide for all scientists in the field that identifies common research interests and will support future fruitful interactions connecting tool development, experiment and theory. While a comprehensive overview of the field is sought, it is not possible to cover all research related to FIB technologies in detail. Building a quantum internet requires efficient and reliable quantum hardware, from photonic sources to quantum repeaters and detectors, ideally operating at telecommunication wavelengths. Thanks to their high brightness and single-photon purity, quantum dot (QD) sources hold the promise to achieve high communication rates for quantum-secured network applications. Furthermore, it was recently shown that excitation schemes, such as longitudinal acoustic phonon-assisted (LA) pumping, provide security benefits by scrambling the coherence between the emitted photon-number states. In this work, we investigate further advantages of LA-pumped quantum dots with emission in the telecom C-band as a core hardware component of the quantum internet. We experimentally demonstrate how varying the pump energy and spectral detuning with respect to the excitonic transition can improve quantum-secured communication rates and provide stable emission statistics regardless of network-environment fluctuations. These findings have significant implications for general implementations of QD single-photon sources in practical quantum communication networks.

A hybrid interface of solid state single-photon sources and atomic quantum memories is a long sought-after goal in photonic quantum technologies. Here we demonstrate deterministic storage and retrieval of photons from a semiconductor quantum dot in an atomic ensemble quantum memory at telecommunications wavelengths. We store single photons from an InAs quantum dot in a high-bandwidth rubidium vapour based quantum memory, with a total internal memory efficiency of $(12.9 \pm 0.4) \%$. The signal-to-noise ratio of the retrieved photons is $18.2\pm 0.6$, limited only by detector dark counts. This demonstration paves the way to quantum technologies that rely on distributed entanglement, and is especially suited for photonic quantum networks.

Many technologies require highly-oriented and textured functional thin films. The most common synthe-sis approaches use on-axis sputter geometries. However, in some scenarios, on-axis sputtering is not feasible. During ionized physical vapor deposition (PVD), in contrast to conventional PVD, the film-forming species can be accelerated onto the growing film using substrate-bias potentials. This increas-es the ad-atom mobility, but also deflects the trajectory of ions towards the substrate increasing the texture of the growing film. However, potential gas-ion incorporation in the films limits the feasibility of such approaches for the deposition of defect-sensitive materials. In this work, we report on the oblique-angle deposition of highly c-axis oriented AlN (0002) films, enabled by reactive metal-ion syn-chronized HiPIMS. The effect of critical deposition parameters, such as the magnetic configuration, ion kinetic energies and substrate biasing are investigated. The films deposited using HiPIMS show a more pronounced texture and orientation compared to DCMS films. We find that combining the HiPIMS dep-ositions with a moderate substrate bias of -30 V is sufficient to improve the crystalline quality and tex-ture of the films significantly. To reduce process-gas incorporation, and the formation of point defects, the negative substrate-bias potential is synchronized to the Al-rich fraction of each HiPIMS pulse. This leads to reduced Ar-Ion incorporation and improves the structural properties. The films also show uni-form polarization of the grains making this synthesis route suitable for piezoelectric applications. While the compressive stress in the films is still high, the results demonstrate, that synchronized HiPIMS can yield promising results for the synthesis under oblique-angle deposition conditions - even with low substrate-bias potentials.

In this paper, we discuss the Dutch power market, which is comprised of a day-ahead market and an intraday balancing market that operates like an auction. Due to fluctuations in power supply and demand, there is often an imbalance that leads to different prices in the two markets, providing an opportunity for arbitrage. To address this issue, we restructure the problem and propose a collaborative dual-agent reinforcement learning approach for this bi-level simulation and optimization of European power arbitrage trading. We also introduce two new implementations designed to incorporate domain-specific knowledge by imitating the trading behaviours of power traders. By utilizing reward engineering to imitate domain expertise, we are able to reform the reward system for the RL agent, which improves convergence during training and enhances overall performance. Additionally, the tranching of orders increases bidding success rates and significantly boosts profit and loss (P&L). Our study demonstrates that by leveraging domain expertise in a general learning problem, the performance can be improved substantially, and the final integrated approach leads to a three-fold improvement in cumulative P&L compared to the original agent. Furthermore, our methodology outperforms the highest benchmark policy by around 50% while maintaining efficient computational performance.

Deep Reinforcement Learning (Deep RL) has been explored for a number of applications in finance and stock trading. In this paper, we present a practical implementation of Deep RL for trading natural gas futures contracts. The Sharpe Ratio obtained exceeds benchmarks given by trend following and mean reversion strategies as well as results reported in literature. Moreover, we propose a simple but effective ensemble learning scheme for trading, which significantly improves performance through enhanced model stability and robustness as well as lower turnover and hence lower transaction cost. We discuss the resulting Deep RL strategy in terms of model explainability, trading frequency and risk measures.

Triggered, indistinguishable, single photons play a central role in various quantum photonic implementations. Here, we realize a novel n$^+-$i$-$n$^{++}$ diode structure embedding semiconductor quantum dots: the gated device enables spectral tuning of the transitions and deterministic control of the observed charged states. Blinking-free single-photon emission and high two-photon indistinguishability is observed. The linewidth's temporal evolution is investigated for timescales spanning more than $6$ orders of magnitude, combining photon-correlation Fourier spectroscopy, high-resolution photoluminescence spectroscopy, and two-photon interference (visibility of $V_{\text{TPI, 2ns}}=\left(85.5\pm2.2\right){\%}$ and $V_{\text{TPI, 9ns}}=\left(78.3\pm3.0\right){\%}$). No spectral diffusion or decoherence on timescales above $\sim 9\,\text{ns}$ is observed for most of the dots, and the emitted photons' linewidth $\left(\left(420\pm30\right)\text{MHz}\right)$ deviates from the Fourier-transform limit only by a factor of $1.68$. Thus, for remote TPI experiments, visibilities above $74\%$ are anticipated. The presence of n-doping only signifies higher available carrier mobility, making the presented device highly attractive for future development of high-speed tunable, high-performance quantum light sources.

Microcavities have long been recognized as indispensable elements in quantum photonic research due to their usefulness for enhanced light extraction and light-matter interaction. A conventional high-Q cavity structure typically allows only a single optical transition to be tuned into resonance with a specific mode. The transition to a more advanced double-cavity structure, however, introduces new and interesting possibilities such as enhancing two spectrally close optical transitions at the same time with two distinct cavity modes. Here, we investigate a cavity structure composed of a monolithic planar cavity enclosed between two semiconductor distributed Bragg reflectors (DBR) and a top dielectric mirror deposited on a fiber tip. While the bottom cavity is formed by the two DBRs, the mirror on the fiber tip and the top DBR of the semiconductor chip create a second tunable cavity. These coupled cavities exhibit mode hybridization when tuned into resonance and their splitting can be adjusted to match with the spectral separation of closely spaced optical transitions by a suitable sample design. Furthermore, we report on the simultaneous resonance tuning of the exciton and biexciton transition of a semiconductor quantum dot, each to a separate mode of the open fiber-based double cavity. Decay time measurements at simultaneous resonance showed a Purcell-factor of $F_P^X$=1.9$\pm$0.4 for the exciton transition.

With the digitalization of transportation new use cases for digital information services are emerging. For example, prioritization of road users at traffic signals, especially emergency vehicles, is a desired goal. Requirements for the necessary communication link between road user and C-ITS station are often inadequately met. In particular, increasing communication distances while minimizing latencies are key requirements for timely influencing the control of traffic light signal programs. This paper presents the automotive application of a fast-switchable antenna array with targeted transmission direction selection and high antenna gain. In addition to antenna design requirements, theoretical analyses to increase transmission distance are performed using radio propagation simulation. Furthermore, practical evaluation is performed both in laboratory and test field environment using continuous wave and C-ITS service measurements. An automatic switching of antenna sectors based on geolocation is implemented and discussed from a scientific point of view. Several emission features mark semiconductor quantum dots as promising non-classical light sources for prospective quantum implementations. For long-distance transmission [1] and Si-based on-chip processing[2, 3], the possibility to match the telecom C-band [4] stands out, while source brightness and high single-photon purity are key features in virtually any quantum implementation [5, 6]. Here we present an InAs/InGaAs/GaAs quantum dot emitting in the telecom C-band coupled to a circular Bragg grating. The Purcell enhancement of the emission enables a simultaneously high brightness with a fiber-coupled single-photon count rate of 13.9MHz for an excitation repetition rate of 228MHz (first-lens collection efficiency ca. 17% for NA = 0.6), while maintaining a low multi-photon contribution of g(2)(0) = 0.0052. Moreover, the compatibility with temperatures of up to 40K attainable with compact cryo coolers, further underlines the suitability for out-of-the-lab implementations.

The application of radio-based positioning systems is ever increasing. In light of the dissemination of the Internet of Things and location-aware communication systems, the demands on localization architectures and amount of possible use cases steadily increases. While traditional radio-based localization is performed by utilizing stationary nodes, whose positions are absolutely referenced, collaborative auto-positioning methods aim to estimate location information without any a-priori knowledge of the node distribution. The usage of auto-positioning decreases the installation efforts of localization systems and therefore allows their market-wide dissemination. Since observations and position information in this scenario are correlated, the uncertainties of all nodes need to be considered. In this paper we propose a discrete Bayesian method based on a multi-dimensional histogram filter to solve the task of robust auto-positioning, allowing to propagate historical positions and estimated position uncertainties, as well as lowering the demands on observation availability when compared to conventional closed-form approaches. The proposed method is validated utilizing different multipath-, outlier and failure-corrupted ranging measurements in a static environment, where we obtain at least 58% higher positioning accuracy compared to a baseline closed-form auto-positioning approach., Comment: To appear in the proceedings of the 12th International Conference on Indoor Positioning and Indoor Navigation (IPIN 2022)

Quantum cryptography harnesses quantum light, in particular single photons, to provide security guarantees that cannot be reached by classical means. For each cryptographic task, the security feature of interest is directly related to the photons' non-classical properties. Quantum dot-based single-photon sources are remarkable candidates, as they can in principle emit deterministically, with high brightness and low multiphoton contribution. Here, we show that these sources provide additional security benefits, thanks to the tunability of coherence in the emitted photon-number states. We identify the optimal optical pumping scheme for the main quantum-cryptographic primitives, and benchmark their performance with respect to Poisson-distributed sources such as attenuated laser states and down-conversion sources. In particular, we elaborate on the advantage of using phonon-assisted and two-photon excitation rather than resonant excitation for quantum key distribution and other primitives. The presented results will guide future developments in solid-state and quantum information science for photon sources that are tailored to quantum communication tasks.
